TRUDY’S TEAL ANGELS Chris, Bec and Rosie

When faced with a cancer diagnosis, the world before you shatters into a million pieces and all that remains is a fragile, delicate shell of the person you used to be. Overwhelmed with medical appointments and with terrifying thoughts running through your head, this can be an isolating and lonely time, even when you are surrounded by family. This is the moment when Trudy’s Teal Angels fly to the rescue, with their strong wings of resilience and bright coloured halos packed full of knowledge that can make even the scariest cancer diagnosis seem much more manageable.

Trudy Crowley was a brave and inspiring woman who was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer at the age of 45. Instead of curling up in the corner and surrendering, she “put her big girl pants on” and decided to use this terrible diagnosis for good, determined to create change within the system. Speaking in Parliament, Trudy stood up and raised the need for more dedicated ovarian cancer support. She also began an iconic annual Mackay event which has raised funds for Ovarian Cancer. Sadly, Trudy passed away on August 28, 2018, but some of the funds from the events have been used to transform the experience of a cancer diagnosis for many people in our region. Something Trudy would be very proud of today with the charity that bears her name. One of these incredible changes is the introduction of two dedicated Trudy Crowley Foundation nurses. These incredible professionals are there to guide people living with cancer through their journeys

by offering practical tools and advice, helping them to navigate the medical system and giving emotional support along the way. The Trudy Crowley Foundation enabled the employment of the first parttime Ovarian Palliative Cancer Nurse in Australia, a lady called Rosie Stannard.

Before her passing, Trudy became very close to Rosie and the connection she felt was so meaningful that she chose Rosie to be part of her legacy, continuing to help other individuals in the same situation. Rosie is a Mackay born and bred local who has been a nurse for almost 45 years. She began working in aged care and spent time helping with quadriplegics in Brisbane before discovering her true passion for palliative care.

“It’s a privilege to look after someone at the end of their life,” said Rosie.

“Trudy would be tickled pink and absolutely chuffed to see what we are doing – this was her dream!”

For the last three years, Rosie has been the charity’s dedicated nurse, and last month enough funds were raised to employ a second nurse, Chris Giannangelo. For the past 32 years, Chris has been a community nurse in Mackay, taking an interest in palliative care 10 years ago. When it came time for her to begin retirement last year, she was approached by the Foundation and offered a part-time role. The two women now work together to deliver cancer support throughout the Mackay and Whitsunday regions. They travel around the region attending home visits

and hold weekly catchups at the Trudy Crowley Foundation Cancer Centre.

This Mackay based centre is another outcome of the dedicated work by the broader Trudy Crowley Foundation Board, who have continued to carry the torch for Trudy, raising more funds and expanding the services. The centre boasts a comfortable lounge setting for support group meetings, a wig room and also a free counselling service for cancer patients and individual members of their families.

Bec Snell is the comforting, calm presence that offers counselling support, guiding people through the emotional impacts, intense feelings, and the challenging mental struggle of a diagnosis. She has worked in counselling for several years and is passionate about empowering people through their individual experiences.

“Walking next to people as they are going through their journey is very fulfilling, to help them find the strength and be a source of encouragement is so important.”

The services that the Trudy Crowley Cancer Foundation provide are all free to the community of Mackay and Greater Whitsunday.

The Trudy Crowley Cancer Centre is located at Shop 6, 41 Gregory Street in Mackay (next to Taylors Hotel) and is open from 10am to 2pm from Monday to Thursday.

PAWS (THEN WALK) FOR A CAUSE

RSPCA Queensland is gearing up for its 30th annual Million Paws Walk event, and they want you to be a part of it! Million Paws Walk has been a much-loved tradition in Mackay amongst the two-legged and four-legged alike, since 1994. On Sunday, May 26th, from 8:00am to 10:30am, head down to Queens Park in Mackay with the whole family to help raise vital funds for animals in need.

Registration opens at 8:00am, with the walk starting at 9:00am. But the fun doesn't stop there! Enjoy market stalls, competitions, games, and raffles, all in support of a great cause. Make sure your furry friend is kitted out in their Million Paws Walk merchandise so they can strut down the red carpet like the VIP (Very Important Pooch) they are. Whether you have a dog or not, this event is a great opportunity to come together as a community and

support animals in need. Funds raised through the event will go towards helping animals like Loki, who came into RSPCA's care in November 2022.

Loki was in urgent need of medical care due to his poor physical condition, suffering with anaemia, a severe flea infestation, and an untreated large mass. After receiving treatment, Loki was placed in foster care with Michelle, a long-term volunteer at the RSPCA Mackay Animal Care Centre. While with Michelle, Loki loved his daily walks on the beach, spending time with people, and sleeping on the bed. Michelle grew very fond of Loki and officially adopted him in April 2023.

Now a special RSPCA VIP, Loki joins Michelle on visits to schools, early learning centres, and aged care facilities to spread the word about RSPCA Queensland’s work. You may have spotted him

at events, local markets or proudly walking in the Anzac Day March.

Million Paws Walk is a chance for the whole family to come together for a tail-waggingly good time while supporting a worthy cause. Your participation can make a real difference in the lives of animals in need, giving them a second chance at a happy ever after. So, mark your calendars and visit millionpawswalk.com.au to get your tickets to the walk and start fundraising today!

Don't miss out on this opportunity to celebrate 30 years of Million Paws Walk! Your support can help make a positive impact on the lives of animals like Loki and many others who deserve a chance at a loving forever home.

CONNECTING LAND AND COMMUNITY FOR 21 YEARS WITH REEF CATCHMENTS

At Reef Catchments, supporting and nurturing diversity is key to achieving their goals for resilient ecosystems and an engaged community. As a core value, this is reflected in the people that form their tight-knit and highly focused team.

Comprising 35 highly skilled professionals, Reef Catchments is a non-government organisation delivering natural resource management projects across the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac region – from the mountains to the sea. Whether they’re in the field working with landholders, connecting with the community at workshops and seminars or out planting and monitoring coral on the Reef, this team are all-in! CEO Katrina Dent is quick to comment; “Our team is our greatest asset, and we value and nurture the richness of diversity and talent we’ve been able to bring together.”

With more than 20 years planning experience, Katrina oversees strategic operations and management for the organisation. She also maintains strong personal contact with her team, stakeholders, members, partners, and the Reef Catchments Board.

Julie Boyd is proud to sit as Chair of the Board. An inspiring local leader, Julie was the first female Mayor of Mackay, a role she held for 11 years. Passionate about the environment, Julie helped to introduce a

recycling system and vegetation management plan, during her tenure and now lends her expertise to Reef Catchments. “Reef Catchments is a forward-thinking organisation, with a dedicated and passionate team who are working hard with and for the community to achieve positive outcomes for our gorgeous natural environment.”

Behind every successful organisation is, of course, a well-run Administration and Finance Department. At the helm of this efficiently run department is Wendy Slater. With more than 20 years’ experience in the accounting and audit sector and over 6 years with Reef Catchments, Wendy works across all aspects of Reef Catchments. “It is so satisfying to be an integral part of planning a project, the sense of achievement in having funding awarded and seeing a project through delivery from inception to completion”.

Also keen to nurture young careers, Reef Catchments is proud to provide exciting development paths for graduates. Cass Hayward, Coordinator of the Whitsunday Reef Island Initiative, began her career at Reef Catchments in 2016 upon completing a Bachelor of Environmental Management (Honours) at the University of Queensland.

“Working for Reef Catchments has been a dream. I have had the opportunity to work on an absolute smorgasbord of projects related to everything from

invasive ant control, to restoring seagrass and coral reef ecosystems. The learning curve has never flattened out – I learn something new or am involved in something new every week.”

Locally born, Jamay Deshong is an Indigenous identified project officer with Reef Catchments. Her focus is on creating inclusive relationships with Traditional Owners, allowing for the exchange of traditional knowledge and tools to benefit and educate natural resource management groups, the community, and emerging generations. When asked, Jamay stated she feels a profound duty as a proud Koinjmal youth to aid in the restoration of the planet’s health. “The organisation shares the same vision and values as me, and it’s so awesome to work with like-minded people.”

Understated, yet vital, the Reef Catchments team are responsible for leading initiatives in the improvement of water quality flowing to the Reef, improved land management practices that enhance productivity, support for biodiversity and a host of other activities.

For the past 21 years they have been quietly providing natural resource management and solutions across the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac region. This is a focused team, leading the way to create a resilient, sustainable, and diverse local environment in harmony with, and capable of, supporting a

Fav Quote: You can’t change how people treat you, but you can change how it affects you

Tell Us Something Most People Don’t Know About You? I can be quite shy and introverted.

It all started with a love for cooking, a creative passion for all things artsy, as well as a self-proclaimed hospitality interest that spiraled to success after reading a bunch of books based on small businesses for Michelle Camilleri to realise she was going to start up her own!

Director of One Hungry Mumma says in her spare time, when not hosting an event with friends and family, she’s either cooking, painting with acrylics or getting crafty with mixed media.

Born in Mackay, Michelle grew up in Townsville up until she was fourteen. She then moved to Finch Hatton and has lived in the area ever since. She married a local boy at nineteen and now has two children with her husband, along with two chooks and a dog she describes as a “spoilt but truly divine toy poodle called Fred.”

Welcoming, creative and honest are just a few words to describe her personality.

Michelle has always been interested in small businesses and has read many books on the topic just for fun.

“I love the opportunities you have in small business to make it your own and to grow with the business.

“I enjoy being able to be creative and to wake up every day with a grateful heart that I am in the right place for this time of my life,” she says.

Marriage, kids, travel and building a home are some of her most significant life moments. Despite her toughest times of infertility issues and having to say goodbye to both of her parents, she says she is very fortunate.

“I am very fortunate to have my beautiful husband and partner in crime beside me along the way for the last 28 years, with children, a poodle and chooks along for the ride.”

Born in New Zealand, Laura Marei Aquirre moved to Australia at the young age of six months old to Wollongong in NSW. She then moved to Ayr, then Townsville five years later, before gaining experience overseas in the UK where she worked as a nanny at nineteen years old.

Unintentionally, Laura scored a high-end job working for a five-star hotel, catering to celebrities in a luxurious hotel at Park Lane, which led to the spark of interest in hospitality.

After a while in hospitality, Laura decided to switch career paths, securing a job at an architect company where she enjoyed the change in hours and pace of life for roughly eighteen months.

“After a brief stint back in hospitality, I was head hunted to run an architect company for three directors. I organised their office and lives with a fierce passion,” she remarked.

Leaving her overseas job behind, she relocated back to Australia and was working in various roles, before her husband decided to start his own cleaning business. Operating out of their Mazda CX-9, using a pull-along Henry vacuum, they did bond cleans and mainly residential work, whilst Laura handled the paperwork. This was the start of the journey towards ELA Cleaning Professionals

While Eusebio, Laura’s husband, fell ill during the process, however the couple were able to push through with the utmost support for each other and their business flourished, evolving into two successful businesses with government contracts, dedicated family-like staff, and an expansion into the inclusion of a retail shop.

Due to running two businesses the couple often find it hard to make time on weekends for hobbies and interests, but greatly appreciate and enjoy watching their daughter on her netball sporting journey.

“We work hard for our business, but it’s worth it because we’ve done it together.”

A MASTERFUL 15 YEARS AT MASTER BUTCHERS WHITSUNDAY, STEWART DRIVE

LANE’S AUSTRALIA WISHES TO CONGRATULATE MASTER BUTCHERS WHITSUNDAY STEWART DRIVE ON 15 YEARS!

In the heart of Cannonvale, Master Butchers Whitsundays’ first storefront sits proudly as the flagship of a business that has expanded and diversified over the years, growing from just four staff to now over 40 dedicated team members across four locations. It boasts several beautifully stocked display cabinets offering a range of cuts and tantalising mealtime choices, a Himalayan salt dry-aging coolroom, freezers packed with tender treats and shelves sparkling with an array of rubs and salts dedicated to maximising your dinner experience.

It's hard to believe that 15 years ago, the store was on the verge of closing down, until Don Cameron and Karen Rix purchased the business and infused it with both passion and expertise. Their dedication and ability to deliver high quality

Lanesbbq.com.au

Celebrating 15 Meaty Years

produce and creative meal options has given Master Butchers Whitsunday an almost cult-like following among discerning foodies across the region. In fact, their quality meats are so sought after, they opened a second store, MBW

On The Barbie at the Whitsunday Shopping Centre, then a third store, MBW at Marian and also a Wholesale Centre which supplies the majority of local restaurants.

Two years ago, Karen and Don welcomed Alex Wordsworth and his partner Danielle Carr into the business, officially handing over the reins to them as managers and part owners of Master Butchers Whitsunday. Karen and Don still retain a majority percentage in the store at this point but that will change each year. While remaining proud owners of the other three businesses the couple are excited to see a new generation lead the way as part of their overall succession plan. This plan ensures Whitsunday residents will always receive the same friendly service and quality meats from their local butcher.

Originally from Tasmania, Don became a butcher by pursuing an apprenticeship when he finished school at age 16. By the age of 23, he had purchased the store and become a business owner in his own right. Meanwhile, Karen worked in retail sales and the finance industry, before moving into the foodservice sector which gave her vital experience for her future ventures with Don.

The couple met in 2007 when they operated neighbouring businesses and soon after, following a holiday to the Whitsundays, they decide to relocate to Queensland.

Don first met Alex in Tasmania when he worked as an apprentice at one of Dons shops, and since then has become a father-figure and mentor to the young man. As a result, the pair have a similar work ethic, standard of service and eye

for a good cut of meat. Several years after Don and Karen left Tasmania, Alex relocated north to join them at the shop. After a few years he decided to take a break from the industry and accepted a General Managers role at Banjos Bar and Bistro, which is where he met the love of his life, Danielle.

The couple now have a beautiful three-and-a-half-year-old son together. Danielle is originally from Camden, NSW, but moved to the Whitsundays as a teenager and attended Proserpine State High School. With the opportunity to take a gap year between studies, Danielle landed a job at Banjos Bar and Grill where she met Alex. Discussions of owning a business together had always been on the cards so when Don and Karen offered them the opportunity to purchase Master Butchers Whitsunday, they jumped at the idea.

Alex’s passion for butchering and his managerial experience have him at the helm of the business. Meanwhile Danielle has spent the last few years learning the inner workings of the business from the accounts, marketing and administration plus completing her certificate in Meat Processing. With their years of working in customer service together, they create a happy and positive vibe at the store, one where customers always feel welcome and appreciated.

“We wouldn’t be able to do any of this and grow the business the way we are, if it wasn’t for our incredible team of dedicated staff and our amazing customer base,” said Danielle.

“We all work together, and if we don’t have something at our store, we will ring Karen at MBW On The Barbie to see if they have it there.

“It’s about making sure the community gets what they want at one of our locations and that is something that we’ve all stood for and will continue to uphold.”

Meet Danny

In-House Chef With Master Butchers Whitsunday

It was in Daniel’s blood to become a chef, following in the capable footsteps of his father, who had always loved cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

“My dad was a chef, and I have always loved working with food and making people happy,” Danny explained.

“Food makes people happy and being around happy people gives you such a rush.”

Relocating to Airlie Beach 10 years ago was a surprise decision for Danny and one that completely changed the trajectory of his and his family’s life.

Since his relocation to Airlie Beach, Danny began his career in the kitchen at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, working across the main kitchen and for special functions, including Airlie Beach Race Week, Airlie Beach Festival of Music, numerous weddings, and all sorts of celebrations.

He then moved to Fish D’Vine, cooking for the main restaurant as well as catering big events like White on Whitehaven, the Mayors Ball, and the Whitsunday Tourism Awards.

This experience lends itself to the culinary prowess of Master Butchers Whitsunday. Having joined the team six months ago, Danny is happily using his creative knowledge to launch a new kitchen offering which will see chefprepared meals using the best quality meats ready for customers to purchase. In the role, he loves cooking beautiful dishes and specialty meats for customers to buy for their families.

“I love smoking our meats and making pastries. Creating dishes for busy families which have good quality ingredients,” Danny explained.

Danny also enjoys leading a team while being off site at functions and events, and he is excited to witness the next period of growth for Master Butchers Whitsunday.

When he is out of the kitchen, Danny is spending time with his wife, Bec, and their three children, one of which is also a chef. Danny loves fishing, swimming, playing a round of golf and maintaining the family property.

Meet Melanie

Apprentice Butcher With Master Butchers Whitsunday

Standing proudly among the pack in a traditionally male-dominated trade, Mel loves the working environment at Master Butchers Whitsunday and always gives her all, representing a strong female force, paving a way for other women in the industry.

This born and bred local is always ensuring customers receive the very best, perfecting her cuts, and curating her craft, in her apprenticeship with Master Butcher Whitsundays.

Having joined the team in 2020, for Melanie, it was no surprise she has found enjoyment in her role, finding pleasure in creating new and wonderful products for customers, loving spending her time cooking, and enjoying the fun relationship she has with the wider Master Butcher team.

“I enjoy cooking and creating new products and have a great team to work,” Mel explained.

Within her apprenticeship, Mel has flourished under the leadership of Alex and Danni and the skilled butchers with Master Butcher Whitsundays.

“I started my apprenticeship with Don and Karen, while wholesale was processed at the shop,” Mel explained.

“Then Alex and Danni stepped in and have been transforming the shop with a bigger range of products.”

Having primarily worked in the seafood industry in Bowen, Mel is eager to expand her skills and techniques.

In her free time, she loves being with her partner and their three children, who are all boys, which means the house is always a hive of activity. When she can, Mel will be out on the water, boating, swimming, or fishing, or she’ll be on the sports field, usually helping her son’s football team, the Under 15 Brahams and acting at the first aid officer.

Meet Whytey

Butcher With Master Butchers Whitsunday

A lifetime of knowledge, years of hand-crafted expertise and perfectly precise industry skills are at the heart the technique and experience Anthony “Whytey” Whyte brings to his role every day at Master Butchers Whitsunday.

It all started when Whytey was welcomed into a butcher shop as a 15-year-old, in the role of wash-up boy. From here, he transitioned into an apprenticeship before honing his skills over the years and becoming the strong and capable butcher who now stands front and centre at the Master Butchers Whitsunday workshop.

With 37 years of experience and trade skills under his belt, Whytey’s acquisition into the Master Butchers team was a welcome move.

Originally from Melbourne, Whytey came to Airlie Beach for a one month holiday back in 2013, and he has never left.

Now with Master Butchers Whitsunday for over seven years, Whytey looks back over his time with pride, having been a witness to the business’ expansion, of the growth and development of the business’ retail shop and the development of the business name.

Outside the shop, Whytey enjoys skydiving, watching footy, playing golf, and drinking beer. He enjoys spending time with his family, his adult son and daughter, and his four grandchildren, with three girls and one boy.

40 Years Of Fabulous Food!

Whitsunday Foodservice Celebrates Huge Milestone

What began as a light-hearted conversation between some long-term entrepreneurial locals during the Christmas of 1983, has since blossomed into one of the Whitsundays’ most successful and long-standing businesses. Originally the milk depot in Proserpine, this humble and fledgling company has constantly diversified and expanded over the years, its name now synonymous within the foodservice industry. In 2024 Whitsunday Foodservice celebrates 40 years in business, an impressive milestone, steeped in history.

Back in 1983, the milk depot in Proserpine was owned by Arnold and Denise Legg, but following discussions, Alan Murray, along with Dick Dray and his brothers Edward, Geoffrey, and Michael, decided to purchase the business. With the brothers coming from a farming background and Alan having already owned milk runs in Brisbane, the team believed they had the skills and experience to make the business work.

Almost half a century later, and they have definitely proved this the case.

Proserpine Milk Distribution Company began with just a handful of staff - Alan Murray, Noleen McDonald, Fay Milne as bookkeeper and Andrea Ruge. Robyn Murray recalls that, back then delivery vehicles were not air-conditioned, let alone refrigerated. She remembers Rob Blanza delivering

supplies to the Airlie Beach area in his Ford 100 and Larry Meygel servicing the Proserpine town centre in a Toyota Dyna. Rusty Crane was a Semi Driver who picked milk up from Mackay three days a week and Proserpine Carrying Co, owned by John Bowman, would oversee island deliveries to Shute Harbour.

Meanwhile, Allison Lucas, who was an up-andcoming junior tennis player, cleaned trucks and worked in the convenient store on a Saturday morning, her mum Peggy, filling in when Allison was playing tournament.

At the time, the convenience store was located at the front of the Milk Depot and had cool rooms out the back. And while operations were expanding in Proserpine, Alan noticed the Airlie Beach area was also growing, in fact it was looking to become as big as Proserpine. Wanting to be at the heart of this growth, Alan began hunting for a suitable piece of land where they could build a large warehouse and several cool rooms. In 1989, they moved to their present site where a brand-new facility had been constructed with steel work by Carlo Raiteri, which included a roof that had a hip in it to incorporate a large ice making machine.

Throughout the 1990’s the business continued to expand and diversify, most significantly with computerised systems replacing paper. In addition, Whitsunday Foodservice supplied ice to

the entire region, plus TipTop bread and a parcel delivery service called IPEC. At the same time, the business was constantly looking for more avenues to expand foodservice offerings and, when they managed to gain Countrywide Membership, this new buying power allowed product lines to increase dramatically.

From the mid 2000’s Whitsunday Foodservice experienced significant growth. At the time they had a team of approximately 12 employees, operating four trucks, stocking around 2000 lines and servicing Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Shute Harbour, Dingo Beach, Proserpine, Midge Point, and the Whitsunday Islands. By 2022, they were stocking over 4000 lines and had grown to a team of 60 people, with 11 trucks that enabled them to expand the service to Bowen, Collinsville, and the Mackay region.

“Throughout this time, we continued to innovate and introduce technology wherever we could,” explained Pat Morrissey, General Manager of Whitsunday Foodservice.

“We went from taking orders off an answering machine at ungodly hours to introducing online ordering platforms. We also continued to broaden our product range by giving our customers access to thousands of specialty and imported products.”

By 2015, Whitsunday Foodservice started planning

to build a new facility at their current site, expanding further to enable them to operate at a larger scale more efficiently. For the next five years, however, the business would overcome a series of unexpected challenges that hindered but did not prevent this expansion. As they approached the final planning stages, Tropical Cyclone Debbie hit in 2017 damaging the existing structure. Forging ahead, by late 2018 the team started moving into the new warehouse with completion in January 2019.

Unfortunately, just three months after the move, the world came to a halt when the pandemic came

along. Changing the nature of both global and local business significantly, Whitsunday Foodservice experienced some dark times, but due to the resilience and determination of the team, managed to pivot and prevail, allowing them to come out stronger the other side.

“We introduced a Warehouse Management system which took us from paper pick slips to voice picking headsets, we introduced scanners, vehicle monitoring software for safety and efficiency and started working on a paperless invoice process called sign on glass,” shared Pat.

“When the borders finally reopened, the Whitsundays, like the rest of Queensland went berserk - the hospitality industry in the Whitsundays went from a standstill to the busiest period we have even seen.”

Celebrating 40 years in business is a result of incredible innovation, dedication and overcoming challenges head-on. From the early days with Alan at the helm to the modern era with Pat managing the business, each member of the team is highly valued and an integral part of the broader company’s success.

Meet Pat Morrissey

GENERAL MANAGER

Growing up in Sydney, Pat Morrissey’s relocation to the Whitsundays came at an opportune time, leading him to join the fast-paced and energetic team of Whitsunday Foodservice, starting out in the warehouse driving trucks and working his way up to be their capable and diligent General Manager.

Beginning his tenure over 17 years ago, Pat brought with him a wealth of experience, across industries such as hospitality, retail, and trade, however his superb intercommunication skills have flourished within his role.

“The foodservice industry is all about people and relationships and I’ve been lucky enough to meet and work with some great people over the years,” he explained.

“No two days are the same which keeps it interesting, and I genuinely look forward to coming to work every day.”

Being cool-headed and confident allows Pat to face any issues or challenges that arise; however, his calm leadership has created an attitude of peace and resilience, allowing each and every member of staff to feel supported and assured in their roles.

Pat’s personal highlight from his time with the business has been experiencing its growth firsthand.

“When I started, we had about 12 people, 4 or 5 trucks and we used fax machines more than computers,” he explained.

“Now we have 60 people, 11 trucks and our operations are dominated by technology. There are many highlights over the years around our growth and development and the introduction of technology, but the biggest and best would have to be the construction of the new facility in 2018.”

Outside of the office, Pat is always with his family, his supportive partner Elisa and their beautiful daughter Stella. He also loves spending his time watching sport, cooking, listening to music, and boating.

Pat is grateful for the beautiful relationships he has built with colleagues, as well as his network of supportive friends and family over the years.

Meet Karl Boettcher

ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

A chef by trade, Karl has always had a passion for food and cooking, something that naturally laid the path for his current role which is so closely related to the commercial kitchen. Finding a peaceful solace within his role of Assistant General Manager at Whitsunday Foodservice, Karl enjoys working closely with the sales and purchasing teams, organising and ensuring the safe arrival of all produce to countless commercial kitchens across the region.

Having travelled through North Queensland working as a chef in many kitchens, Karl settled in the Whitsundays when the opportunity to work within the dynamic and dedicated team at Whitsunday Foodservice came along. That was 14 years ago, and Karl has never looked back.

Keeping his watchful eye over much of the business, Karl finds that his particular strengths lie within sales and purchasing. Always calm and collected in times of pressure, Karl is a stable pillar in Whitsunday Foodservice’s management, always prepared to lend himself wherever he is needed at a moment’s notice.

Used to the heat of a busy kitchen, Karl works well under pressure, and always has his finger on the pulse of his team, adept at managing a multitude of tasks at once. He also has a fantastic ability to seamlessly adapt to any situation.

Over his tenure, Karl is most proud of assisting the business in moving through massive updates in technology, from almost solely manual processing, to utilising state of the art IT technology.

When outside the office, Karl is sure to be out on the beautiful Whitsunday waters, fishing and boating around the islands. He also dabbles in videography with drone piloting, and everyone knows that he can certainly make some noise on the guitar!

Meet Trish Smith

OFFICE AND IT MANAGER

Following love to the Whitsundays 13 years ago was twofold for Trish Smith, moving to be with the love of her life, but also finding a second home within the all-embracing walls of Whitsunday Foodservice. Now, having been married for nearly seven years, and been with Whitsunday Foodservice for 12 years and 10 unforgettable months, Trish has never looked back.

A calm yet passionate person, Trish loves her customer focussed role with the business, feeling a deep sense of purpose and accomplishment each and every day. This fulfilment translates to exceptional customer service and impeccable work ethic.

“When you do what you love,” Trish explained, “Work doesn’t feel like work.”

“Although some days may be more challenging than others, supporting colleagues and helping boost positivity in the workplace promotes a productive team environment.”

In her official role as Office and IT Manager, Trish is often managing a great number of projects and developments. Everything from IT development and support, to managing the EOM finances, reporting, as well as social media creation and management, Trish is kept on her toes.

However, she greatly enjoys the various responsibilities she holds with her role, leaving her with the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that she is seeking.

When she does step away from the office, Trish can be found spending quality time with her husband, relaxing, often partaking in a Sunday breakfast or lunch date together on a weekend. The pair also love being active, soaking up the Whitsunday sun walking their two dogs, bike-riding, or socialising out and about in Airlie Beach.

Trish also loves heading over to Hamilton Island, or regularly travelling up to Townsville to spend time with her daughter and grand daughter.

Meet Crichton ‘Crikey’ Jarred

SALES AREA MANAGER

It was love at first sight for Crichton ‘Crikey’ Jarred, when he initially relocated to Airlie Beach from the Gold Coast in 2005. Finding joy in the vastness of the water, happiness in the live music scene and love in a local, Crikey settled into a new coastal life, which was only made better once joining the Whitsunday Foodservice team.

On the books as Sales Area Manager, Crikey initially joined the team in the warehouse of Whitsunday Foodservice, over nine years ago, before his outstanding nature and professional leadership promoted him through the ranks of responsibility.

Crikey’s current role sees him out and about, communicating and working with chefs and local businesses, solving issues occurring in their kitchens and ensuring seamless transactions.

One highlight of his time with Whitsunday Foodservice that Crikey is particularly proud of is the constant growth and evolution that Whitsunday Foodservice has seen in the last few years.

“This growth into the Mackay market was exciting, because it was a bit of a new frontier for us and is something that has been a big team effort, from night pickers, drivers, representatives, so it was great to be a part of,” Crikey explained. However, Crikey finds that his own personal strengths is the communicating with clients, and supporting them with the best products to ensure a tasty service in their restaurants.

“Our core business has always been the incredible restaurants we have right here in the Whitsundays,” Crikey explained.

“My personal goal was to work my way up to dealing with the key accounts and those that are pushing the boundaries in food in our area. I never know what the chef on the other end of the line is going to want, which keeps it very fresh.”

When he’s not at work, Crikey can be found enjoying the live music scene in Airlie Beach, watching a round of footy, and with his wife, Erin, and their two Siberian kittens, Florence and Bella.

Meet Mark Richards

OPERATIONS MANAGER

It has been a whirlwind of 13 years for Mark Richards, acting as Operations Manager of Whitsunday Foodservice with confidence, pride, and tenacity. With a logistics and warehousing portfolio background, Mark transitioned seamlessly into this role, and has not looked back once.

His greatest pride has been watching the gradual evolution of Whitsunday Foodservice, originally operating out of a cold storage warehouse with 25 staff and a fleet of six trucks, when he first started, to now working from a technologically advanced facility, over 60 staff and 11 trucks, with one of the largest employers in the Whitsundays region.

“The key highlight for me was project managing the new facility build in 2018,” Mark explained.

“This facility started with a piece of paper, ruler, and a pencil on my desk and to see it become a reality was an amazing experience. The highlights keep stacking up thanks to the new warehouse as I get to actively pursue and implement new ways to stay ahead of the pack with the latest tech aimed at warehousing and distribution.”

Mark is particularly proud of his ability to visualize a solution to any problem, overcoming hurdles as they appear, including every from mechanical breakdowns, scheduling conflicts, and island resort logistics.

“I find I am able to step back, view my resources as a whole and implement solutions.”

Overseeing a staff of over 40 himself, split across six different departments, Mark ensures that his finger is on the pulse of the business, that each member of his team is confident in their ability and the wider teams efficiency

In his spare time, Mark can be found with his partner, Sara and their two sons, usually fishing together, playing guitar, and building DIY projects. And he will always be ready to tune into the rugby league game and shout for his team, the Cronulla Sharks.

Meet Elisa Teuma

SALES ADMINISTRATION

Looking for an exciting career change that allowed her to develop her skills and experience, Elisa Teuma was eager to join the Whitsunday Foodservice team over six years ago in the Sales Administration department.

With thorough experience in retail sales, Elisa already had significant knowledge which enabled her to take on a more customer account management role which was something new and unique, and a change that Elisa has flourished within. Her indelible strengths in the role include her incredible adaptability.

“I’m fortunate to have great mentors in our managers, who are all talented at what they do and have helped me continually develop skills, which is important given the nature of our ever-evolving, fast paced industry,” Elisa explained.

Elisa’s most memorable milestone with the business is being able to witness the expansion and growth of the close-knit team. Her own appreciation of the team has only grown, with the birth of her baby last year, and being able to return on a part-time basis to allow her quality time with her budding family.

Outside of the office, Elisa loves spending time with her amazing partner Pat, and their beautiful daughter Stella, exploring the region and creating lasting memories.

Having relocated from Sydney when she was 23 years old, Elisa initially only planned on being in the region for one or two years, but now eight years later, she has never looked back.

“I am well and truly anchored here and completely in love with what the area has to offer, particularly the natural beauty and great people.”

ORGANISING YOUR FINANCES

People often think about money and wonder if they are doing the right thing with their financial affairs. Let’s help explain what being organised financially looks like for different age groups.

In 2024 Baby Boomers are those people aged between 60 and 78. Older Boomers have hopefully been retired for some time and are enjoying themselves. They should have the bulk of their money in the pension phase of the super system where they can invest and earn interest and draw down a regular monthly pension to live on or lump sums, all tax free. Depending on the size of their retirement pot, they may already be receiving a part Age Pension and if not, should start to get Age Pension later in life as they erode their pot. They should have a clear picture of what their income profile, between self-funded and government income, looks like over the rest of their expected life span so they can make confident decisions about spending money. They should have a protection strategy in place with their investments, both inside and outside super, to be confident that they’re prepared for

the next, inevitable crash in investment markets.

Younger Boomers may still be working but should be starting to think about retiring or downshifting. They should have a clear picture of the retirement income and the lifestyle they are on track to achieve and when they can afford to retire. They should be building up their hobbies and retirement plans and making sure they are doing all the smart little things with their income and retirement pot to save tax, build wealth and set themselves up for either more income in retirement or an earlier retirement date.

Gen X are currently aged 45 to 59. They are often close to the peak of their careers; kids are growing up and their mortgage is coming down. This means they should be reducing their levels of personal insurances. They are starting to get some free time back after the busy family years and have some surplus income to enjoy life. This is a crucial time to do a bit of retirement planning as they still have time on their side. Some considered changes to better super products and investments, starting savings plans, salary sacrifice or negative gearing to

build a bit more wealth is on the cards. Getting their heads around investing and projecting what their retirement situation looks like gives confidence. They key is knowing what sort of retirement they are on track to achieve.

Gen Y are aged 30 to 44 and for them it’s all about kids, house upgrades, mortgages and budgeting. Managing your money and understanding how offset and redraw accounts on mortgages work to help pay debt of quicker is crucial. It’s also important to make sure the family are protected. What level of insurances are required against someone having sickness, accident or dying to make sure the kids are looked after? The quicker you get the mortgage down the quicker you can move on to building some wealth.

Are you doing the smart things financially for your age group?

Sirens Tantalizing Beauty was recently named a Top 10 Bridal Makeup Artist in the country at the Australian Wedding Awards, a milestone that Sandie says stands out as the most significant in her journey as the sole proprietor of the business.

“This achievement serves as a substantial entry point into the wedding industry, an acknowledgment of the dedication and hard work in delivering exceptional service to clients,” Sandie says. “This accomplishment wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of my husband, family, friends, clientele, local businesses and the incredible brides – both past and those yet to come.”

Sandie travelled to the Gold Coast in January to attend the awards and says the experience was truly unforgettable, a unique opportunity to engage with experienced industry professionals from across the country, to network and establish new business connections, and to celebrate the excellence of those in the industry. With fellow entrants and awardees from the Mackay region, Sandie’s true highlight came when witnessing the recognition of fellow north Queensland wedding industry businesses, emphasising the depth of talent and commitment within the industry right here in Mackay.

In her role as sole proprietor of Sirens Tantalizing Beauty, Sandie finds immense satisfaction in personally collaborating with each individual. Her hands-on approach goes beyond simply delivering beauty services – her approach enables her to forge a deep connection with her clients.

“By personally overseeing every aspect, from consultation to the final touches, I aim not only to provide exceptional service but also to establish a strong rapport,” she says. “This level of personal involvement instils trust, as clients witness firsthand the dedication, expertise, and passion I bring to the beauty industry. It’s more than just a service; it’s a commitment to ensuring each client feels valued and beautiful throughout their experience with Sirens Tantalizing Beauty.”

Sandie brings eight years of hands-on experience to the business, a beauty industry journey that began with certification as a Certified International

Makeup Professional (CIMP) from an American Academy. Under the guidance of a Makeup Artist and Tutor with a portfolio featuring collaborations with renowned models, actors and actresses in Hollywood, the strong foundations of her career were laid. Over the years, she’s expanded her expertise to meet the needs of her clients and now includes various beauty disciplines such as makeup artistry, massage therapy, eyelash and brow treatments, facials, spray tanning, and cosmetic teeth whitening. This diverse background and array of skillsets allows Sandie to offer a comprehensive and personalised approach to beauty and wellness. But, beyond the undeniable joy and thrill that comes with her work, what genuinely fuels her passion is the opportunity to connect with the extraordinary individuals she meets every single day.

“There’s a deep sense of inspiration in being able to instil confidence, witnessing the remarkable transformations that leave my clients looking and feeling absolutely fabulous,” she reflects. “Every day, I strive to work in the beauty industry not just as a profession, but as a source of inspiration and empowerment, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those I have the privilege to serve.”

Being named a Top 10 Bridal Makeup Artist at the Australian Wedding Awards capped off a huge 2023 for Sandie after Sirens Tantalizing Beauty also secured the #2 Highly Commended position in the Mackay & Whitsunday Region at the Wedding Industry Awards 2023. Other pivotal career highlights came when she achieved the Top 5 Bridal Makeup Artist status in both 2021 and 2022 for the Capricorn & Central Coast Regions.

It’s her unwavering dedication, talent and enthusiasm for the wedding industry that led Sandie to achieve these feats, and while industry recognition provides validation for the work she is doing, she will continue to strive to satisfy her day-to-day customers with the level of quality they have come to appreciate from her. With reliability and affordability at the core of her ethos, clients can trust that, from the moment they walk through Sandie’s salon doors, they are in the hands of a professional dedicated to their wellbeing. She believes in making indulgence accessible, ensuring that quality pampering and beauty treatments are within reach for everyone.

“I am eager to maintain my collaborations with remarkable individuals in the industry while continuing to serve both new and loyal clients,” Sandie says of her future. “Their unwavering support has played a pivotal role in the achievements and recognition garnered by Sirens Tantalizing Beauty. I anticipate not only sustaining but deepening these meaningful connections in the years to come. Together, we will embark on a journey of beauty, inspiration, and shared success, creating memorable moments within the vibrant canvas of the beauty industry.”

A SWINGING SUCCESS

KAT ILICH OF FAIRWAYS GOLF SIMULATOR & BAR

In the sport-mad city of Mackay, a golfing oasis has emerged, reshaping the local sports and entertainment scene. Fairways Golf Simulator & Bar, a state-of-the-art golf entertainment precinct, has quickly become a hotspot for enthusiasts and novices alike. Co-owner Kat Ilich joined husband and PGA pro golfer Anthony Johnson in the exciting venture after he took over long-standing business Golf King Superstore in 2013 and the pair have followed a unique path to grow the businesses into what they are today.

“We are Mackay’s first ever state-of-the-art golf entertainment precinct,” Kat explains excitedly. “This is a bold, though relatively groundbreaking entertainment option for our region –one that can be taken as seriously or as socially as you like.”

Fairways Golf Simulator & Bar has been operating since April 2023, integrating technology and atmosphere to create a truly unique experience for the whole community. Offering a plethora of services and experiences, including training with Trackman technology, virtual golf, competitions, and a licensed bar, Fairways has swiftly become a hub for golf enthusiasts. The unique aspect lies in its flexibility – a place to train like a pro or relax like a holidaymaker, catering to all levels of interest and skill.

As a proud Mackay local, Kat emphasises the significance of authenticity, honest communication, and consistency in her business approach. She says her female perspective can be a refreshing aspect of the business at times, bringing a splash of colour, an empathetic approach, and a bit of purposeful conversation to the land of sport. She believes in meaningful and personalised interactions,

creating an environment that goes beyond transactions.

“For the people who choose to live and stay in this dynamic and ever-evolving region, it is considerably important how you greet them, welcome them back, and maintain relationships,” Kat says. “I love that I get to meet new people every day – people who are taking time out from there busy lives to engage in something that they are passionate about, or willing to learn more about, and people who are from all unique walks of life.”

With a background in education, arts, media and literary consulting, Kat is also a published children’s author, and continues to follow her many passions. Over the years, she and Tony have navigated challenges, expanded their family to welcome 10-year-old son Percy and seven-year-old daughter Fleur, and evolved both personally and professionally. As a selfappointed helicopter mum, finding equilibrium among business responsibilities, relief teaching work, consultancy, and family time is a perpetual challenge. Kat acknowledges the importance of prioritising precious moments and forgiving oneself for not catching every ‘ball’ in the juggling act of life.

Coming from a family of strong, hard-working and mould-breaking women, Kat strives to be an independent and proactive role model to her young daughter and the young women in her community. In combination with Tony, the pair combine creativity with practicality, remaining grounded in the principles of authenticity, meaningful interactions, and a commitment to providing an unparalleled golfing experience for the Mackay community.

THE LEGACY CONTINUES

KAYLEE BOCCALATTE OF DAL SANTO’S DELI

Whenever Kaylee Boccalatte opens the door of opportunity, she asks herself, ‘Who do I want to be?’ No matter what goals she sets, she aims to work hard and be the best she can be, making the most of every opportunity and contributing to her family and wider community in meaningful ways. Four years ago, Kaylee raised her hand to serve her community as a Councillor on the Burdekin Shire Council. After four years of advocating for her community, she opted not to run for re-election, instead taking on one of the biggest challenges of her varied and illustrious career; taking over the management of Ayr’s iconic Dal Santo’s Deli.

“I believe that if you are going to do something you need to put in the work, the time and the effort to do it as best you can and do it well,” Kaylee says. “In order to do the right thing by the community and for the Deli, its staff and customers, I made, what was for me, a very difficult decision not to seek re-election, so that I could focus my energy on the Deli.”

In purchasing Dal Santo’s Deli, Kaylee is investing in a north Queensland establishment through which she will continue to serve the Burdekin community. The Deli has been a family-owned business operating for 25 years, with recent expansion, including increased indoor seating, children’s play area and an innovative workspace, proving the popularity and demand for such an establishment in the Burdekin. Dal Santo’s Deli is a must-visit for locals and visitors to the Burdekin alike.

“Dal Santo’s Deli is renowned for its delicious food, fantastic customer service, Italian sweets, excellent platters and great coffee,” Kaylee shares. “It is wonderful to have the opportunity to be part of this legacy.”

What Kaylee lacks in hospitality experience, she more than makes up for in enthusiasm and commitment to customer satisfaction - ironically, she prefers instant coffee to barista-made. Under the guidance of previous manager, Carla Dal Santo, Kaylee will be learning from the best, ensuring a smooth transition from one strong businesswoman of the Burdekin to another.

Born and bred in Home Hill, Kaylee’s four years on council was proof of her passion for the Burdekin, a passion that continues to shine as she embarks on her next chapter. Kaylee and her husband Wes had relocated to Rockhampton to develop a successful water tank business before returning home five years ago to establish a cane farm and raise four incredible children, whom Kaylee considers her greatest achievements. She says Wes is her greatest supporter, giving her the confidence to move beyond her comfort zone, feel less afraid of failure and to be the best person she can be. Kaylee surrounds herself with strong women whom she considers role models, instilling inspiration into Kaylee and the other women around them. Just like the standards Kaylee sets for herself, it’s not what people become that she holds important, but who. facebook.com/carla.dalsanto.5

PROCESS, PRINCIPALS AND PROPERTY

WITH SANDRA MACKLIN FROM MACKAY CITY PROPERTY

Walking into the Mackay City Property office on a busy weekday morning, you will notice a buzz of activity, but also a calm and purposeful order, a happy energy where everyone knows their role and best-process for every eventuality. This is to the delight of Principal and Director, Sandra Macklin who has carefully curated a streamlined operation which makes the notoriously challenging world of property management seem effortless.

Sandra always had a passion for real estate and used to marvel at the property section in newspapers and magazines as a child, finally embarking on a career in office management within the real estate industry 26 years ago. At work, she felt driven to create a positive office environment, one that is dynamic and fulfilling, with process and procedure at its heart.

Before long, Sandra discovered a calling to help every office she worked at enjoy the same pleasant yet productive working environment. This is something she still holds dear today and one of the key elements that helped her garner success and respect within the real estate industry.

A young and ambitious mum, Sandra had her two children in her twenties, and was almost seven months pregnant with her second child when she was approached to be part of the Mackay City Property team which was then Ray White Mackay City.

“At the time I said I would only be available in the very short term, until I had my baby and went on maternity leave,” shared Sandra.

“But 17 years on and now a partner in the business, I guess fate had other intentions for me and real estate really was my calling.”

Three days after the birth of her second child, Sandra was back in the field completing inspections, baby in capsule by her side.

The flexibility and the forward-thinking family values at Mackay City Property is a cornerstone of the business, and something Sandra believes improves team morale and overall happiness, enabling them to retain staff for longer.

“I never want staff to miss out on a school event or seeing their kids compete in a race at a sports carnival,” said Sandra.

“We have staff who go on maternity leave and come back because they love the working environment and flexibility we have here. We also have staff that leave to go to another office and then come back, and that’s a real compliment to us!”

When asked how she keeps the office so calm, Sandra simply responds that the secret is “getting ahead of things and staying ahead”. By adopting simple yet effective processes, everyone benefits, including the clients who entrust their properties to the team.

When Sandra first joined the young office the property management department was almost non-existent.

“Fast forward 17 years and we are now a prominent wellregarded force in the Mackay property management arena. Managing hundreds of properties including many multiple premises owned by investors.”

And while property management is Sandra’s passion, so too is sales, “real estate gives you flexibility and fortunately I have the flexibility to work between sales and rentals, I can’t choose a favourite department they’re both very rewarding for different reasons”.

Sandra’s passion and energy are unbridled and she is a leader who paves the way, always leading by example.

Much of this discipline is echoed in her personal life, a selfconfessed fitness junkie, Sandra can often be found at the gym, working out with no music, just the steady rhythm of her thoughts. For many years she has cycled in charity events from Townsville to Cairns to raise money for charity and ran for days in the Australian outback. This year she is taking part in the Great Wall of China marathon.

With two adult children, a daughter at university and a son completing an apprenticeship locally, Sandra and her husband are looking forward to many more adventures in the years to come.

ICONIC ADVENTURES

With Nicole Graham of Iconic Whitsunday Adventures

Dedicated, confident and driven, these are terms you would use to describe Nicole Graham, as she stands strong at the helm of Iconic Whitsunday Adventures, a marine-and-land-tourism business built on the foundation of customer experience and unique opportunities.

Under the guise of exploring a new opportunity, Nicole and her husband Jeremy purchased their first vessel in 2006, a catamaran that was in much need of a touch of love. Sundowner has now stood the test of time for almost 18 years and has become a testament to the growth and prosperity of the business. A local favourite and has played host to countless families, holiday-makers, and couples from all over the world.

Nicole is a woman of resilience, of fierce determination, and great imagination. While Sundowner changed the trajectory of her life, this was only the beginning. Eventually, new opportunities presented themselves, and Nicole made the difficult decision to close her PR business and focus on growing the marine business. Although this has come with its own set of challenges, it has also been rewarding.

Lady Enid, a stunning 72-foot wooden sailing yacht built in the 1960s, was acquired to offer adult-only experiences. This was followed by the addition of Coastal Explorer, an overland tour, and the latest addition - Viper. Viper is a speed and adrenaline-fueled tour, which is the only vessel capable to venture to the outer reef and Whitehaven Beach, all in one day.

Innovation and imagination are the precipitate of Nicole and Iconic Whitsunday Adventure business, with customer satisfaction and experience at the forefront of whichever turn she takes the business in. This passion for the customer experience is the reason that Iconic Whitsunday Adventures remains a highly regarded tourism experiences in the Whitsundays.

“Passion drives motivation and innovation,” Nicole reflects. “While balance ensures that different perspectives are considered, leading to well-rounded decisions and solutions.”

This careful decision-making and thorough dedication are a testament to the business and to Nicole’s passionate work ethic, creating and promoting a business that just works, catering for the clientele who wish for a bespoke and beautifully unique experience.

Nicole is at the forefront of the business, leading the way with her charm and enthusiasm, encouraging holiday-makers to explore the Whitsundays region. She is often seen promoting the region and Iconic Whitsunday Adventures at leading tourism events and expos across Australia. Nicole is also a prominent member of the Tourism Whitsundays Board, elected by her community due to her exceptional commitment to the marine tourism sector of the Whitsundays and her vision for the growth and prosperity of the region.

This dedication was particularly highlighted in 2023, when Iconic Whitsunday Adventures accepted the Gold Award at the prestigious Whitsunday Tourism Awards, for their exceptional experiences. The accolade reflects Nicole’s passion for marine tourism and creating lasting memories for holiday-makers.

When Nicole is able to step away from the business, she loves spending quality time with her husband, Jeremey, and their two children.

Nicole’s advice to aspiring business women:

“If there’s one thing I have leant on my journey, it is the transformative power of mindset. As women, we must embrace our aspiration openly, challenge our perceived limitations, and recognise that our unique perspectives can be our greatest strengths.”

JOINING FORCES

A NEW SEA ADVENTURE FOR JULIE TELFORD

With a flash of red, a brilliant smile and a razor-sharp mind, Julie Telford exudes a humble confidence that speaks of her passion for tourism, her love of empowering others and her ability to lead a winning team. A champion of small business, over the past 12 years, Julie has co-captained the Red Cat Adventures ship alongside her husband, Asher. During this time, they’ve nursed the fledgling business from a single vessel to a fleet of customdesigned boats. They’ve also received a host of regional, state and national awards, and most recently, sold their multi-million dollar business to a highly-regarded national company which shares their own values, beliefs and dreams.

Joining the SeaLink Marine and Tourism family at the end of last year was a proud moment for Julie whose dedication and determination has been a driving-force of the business since its inception. Purchasing their first vessel in 2011, Julie and Asher began with operating overnight tours for backpackers on their catamaran named Tongarra, a vessel they still operate today. In 2015, they launched Red Cat Adventures introducing their custom-built vessel, Thundercat, to the Whitsundays.

The vessel and its unique tour were so well received by the local tourist market that the business expanded very rapidly. In 2015, a second Thundercat was built and shortly afterwards in 2018, a third custom-catamaran joined the family. In 2020, the company pivoted and almost completely transitioned from a backpacker market to an entirely domestic client base. Instead of floundering during COVID, they had adapted and thrived. This meant that, in 2021, the company emerged from the pandemic by launching a brand-new product, Wildcat Mackay.

Their incredible success story is reflected in their achievements at every level, including accolades at regional, state and national awards. Red Cat Adventures entered the Hall of Fame twice at the Queensland State Awards and won Gold four times in a row at the National Tourism Awards. In 2022, they won Best New Tourism Business for Wildcat Mackay.

During this time, Julie became known as an advocate for regional tourism and her talent for being the voice of our local industry was recognised. For the past three years, she has been the Chair of Tourism Whitsundays, which has benefited the whole industry whilst also opening the doors for her own personal growth.

Originally from Hull in the UK, Julie wanted to be a TV producer for breakfast shows in her youth. She went to university for six years and studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Media Production and a Master’s in Journalism. When she first arrived in Australia, she worked on the overnight charter boats as a host and deckhand for Reality and Anaconda III. Then, in 2006, she moved to Adelaide with Asher, where they spent five years, during which time Julie worked her way up to being the State Manager of a media broadcasting centre.

Deciding to give up the corporate life and pursue their passion, Julie and Asher returned to the Whitsundays and began what would become a hugely successful business. Along the way, three equally adventure-seeking boys have completed their family and keep them both busy, with Julie spending every spare moment taxiing them to sporting events and play dates. What advice would you give other aspiring business women?

I love the saying, don’t sweat the small stuff. Understand the strengths of those who work alongside you and lean on your teammates. Sometimes, we can’t do it all, and that’s OK, especially for working mums. Finding work life balance can be overwhelming, so always reach out to others who offer to help. Be inspired by other badass women who are kicking goals and surround yourself with friends and colleagues who support your dreams and goals. Network proactively and productively. Invest in yourself.

Over the years, Charlotte has been proud of the indelible mark Red Cat has had on the region, with the business expansion and joining with Sealink.

PRESERVING HEALTH, INSPIRING HOPE

The Journey of Dr. Mags Swenson

Oak Tree Family Medical Centre, Moranbah

Dr. Margaret Swenson, fondly known as ‘Dr. Mags’, is more than a familiar face at Oaktree Family Medical Centre in Moranbah—and not only for her colourful fashion sense. She’s a beacon of compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to her patients, the workers and her community. But her journey to becoming the beloved GP of Moranbah is as remarkable as her service to the community.

Dr. Mags grew up in rural Southern Africa during the tumultuous times of the Rhodesian Bush War, then later living through the AIDS pandemic and South Africa’s Independence. Her father worked in the mining field, even in an asbestos mine, and she also lived in mining camps with her mother running a camp mess hall. However, after years on a farm and a divorce, the safety concerns of living in South Africa then prompted Dr. Mags, who was a single parent of two young sons, to seek a safer environment for her family. With Australia offering both security and familial support, she made the life-changing decision to relocate, recognising the responsibility to provide a secure upbringing for her children.

“They don’t ask to come into the world, so it’s up to us to look after them,” she said.

Completing her medical degree as an older student in her late 30’s at ANU in Canberra, Dr. Mags found her calling. She had wanted to be a doctor since she was a four-year-old, possibly inspired by the hit TV show M.A.S.H. She later found herself in Townsville, as her sister was stationed in the army. It was during this time that she made a pivotal stop in Moranbah to visit a family friend in 2012, a visit that would later shape her future.

Impressed by Moranbah’s amenities, including a 50m pool (as a past swimmer), plus the tightknit community and the warmth of its residents, Margaret joined the local general practice Moranbah Medical to finish her GP Training. Her desire to help and heal in rural areas was inspired by the closeknit relationships rural doctors foster with their communities, having lived rurally most of her life too.

When the clinic was later sold, Margaret gained experience in remote locations across Australia including postings at Normanton, the Northern Territory and Port Hedland in Western Australia. However, it was the community’s heartfelt plea for her to stay via a Facebook Community Notice Board Petition that truly touched Margaret’s heart. Overwhelming support poured in urging her to remain in Moranbah. She then returned and bought the Moranbah Town Centre Surgery starting her 8-year journey as a Practice Owner as well as a GP. “You don’t know how much people appreciate you

until something like this happens,” she said. Amidst the challenges posed by the Medicare healthcare system, which Dr. Mags says rewards doctors based on the quantity of patients seen over quality, she remains steadfast in her commitment to ‘slow medicine’ which takes the time to listen to a patient and work on improving their health, not just fixing the problem in front of them. Her patients’ well-being in their biological, psychological and social areas of their lives underpins each and every patient interaction.

Driven by this philosophy of patient-centered care, Dr. Mags emphasises the importance of thorough history taking, getting to know your patient and their life and to use preventative measures to reduce their chances of going to hospital and so being able to stay in their communities which enhances rural patients’ health outcomes and thus their lives.

“Let’s actually look at how to reduce the likelihood of disease in the future and give people a better life,” she said.

Her dedication to holistic healthcare, from infancy to old age, reflects her belief in the traditional role of a GP as a trusted community member, rather than just a medical practitioner. She advocates for a shift towards a more holistic approach to healthcare, one that prioritises preventative measures and patient education over the quick-fix mentality often prevalent in modern medicine.

Dr. Mags said that this will only be achievable when the healthcare system “becomes less reactive and more proactive for our patients.”

“After all, we have an aging population and we live in the age of chronic, or long-term illnesses where decades ago we would’ve died from them, however now we survive.”

Her wish for all of her and her Oaktree Family Medical Centre’s patients, and all rural communities, is that they live healthily as they age, so they can stay active and stay at home living independently.

Dr. Mags expressed distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly regarding the misinformation spread on social media platforms. She found it profoundly disheartening that some individuals chose to trust influencers over medical professionals and that the distrust in some employers also led to distrust in the medical care doctors wanted to give their patients.

She understands, though, that there was so much information overload, that it was sometimes hard, even for her as a medical professional, to keep up with all the changes. As someone dedicated to upholding the Hippocratic Oath and its first ethic of ‘Do no harm’ and her personal ethic of prioritising patient well-being, she felt devastated by the erosion

of trust between doctors and patients.

Oaktree Family Medical Centre is a family affair and she now has her son Llew as her partner operating the business side of things.

“We also have two mother-daughter’s working with us; one example is Donna our administration manager and her daughter Pearl who is a schoolbased trainee.”

Oaktree Family Medical has also assisted four nurses to become RN’s and has had medical students gain experience there, as Dr. Mags believes in training and empowering rural communities to use local resources such as her clinic.

“The statistics show if you were born in and lived in a rural area you are likely to come back and work there,” she added.

“With the doctor and nurse shortage, we have to grow our own now.”

Initially there was only one GP and now there are eight, along with 10 staff and four nurses at Oaktree.

Dr. Mags also became very interested in Occupational Health, despite her sub-specialty being Women’s Health and Allergy, but it was an inevitable area of interest to gravitate towards living in the Bowen Basin.

As more women enter the workplace in coal mining, and as more men age but still want to work, Margaret’s philosophy of keeping patients as healthy as possible resonates with those workers.

“There has to be a ‘win-win’ philosophy in rural towns with industry, whether farming or mining or tourism, as the face of the Australian workforce changes.”

So why the name Oaktree for her clinic?

In cultures worldwide the Oak Tree represents health, wisdom, strength and resilience, the Australian Oak is called the Casuarina and she loves that there is both a male and female oak tree that embodies the values central to Dr. Mags and her practice—compassion, dedication, and a commitment to the well-being of her patients.

She is famously known to say when asked how she has been able to build her practice with such lovely and professional GP’s, nurses and staff that, “I can teach people Medicine, but not caring.”

She hopes one day to bring that same type of clinic to Mackay too.

In Dr. Mags, Moranbah has found not just a doctor, but a trusted friend and advocate—a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on a community’s health and well-being.

Light, Love And Inspiration

Owners Of Gypsy And The Bower Bird

From the moment you walk into the store, you will experience a sense of calm and bathe in the beauty of this perfectly contrived space. Feel the energy of light and texture visually replenishing the senses and inspiring the mind to release the endorphins that often pre-empt a rewarding shopping experience. Welcome to Gypsy and the Bower Bird, one of Mackay’s favourite gift and homeware stores right in the heart of the city. For the past 10 years, this boutique experience has caught the attention of discerning shoppers who are looking for that special gift or signature piece for their home.

Two of these people, who were initially captivated by the charm of Gypsy and the Bower Bird, are the shop’s new owners Aimee Lacy and Melanie Walker. The mother-daughter duo began their journey with the store by admiring its product range and stunning visual displays, but when they heard the business was for sale, they both looked destiny in the eyes and knew this was a dream they could bring to reality.

Both women share a passion for homewares and beautiful, unique objects that make your heart sing. Aimee has worked in retail since she was 16 years old and specialises in visual merchandising. Adept at choregraphing stunning displays, she loves nothing more than spending time creating the perfect layout for their new store.

Meanwhile, Melanie is enjoying a career-change, having spent most of her life working as a Personal Assistant to Directors in large companies, most recently within the real estate industry. Moving to running her own business alongside her daughter is a dream come true for Melanie, who loves being surrounded by beautiful objects, chatting with customers, and overseeing the daily operations of the shop.

Officially opening the store under its new ownership on the first of February this year, the two dedicated and passionate women have brought a new, exciting energy to the space. And, while they are retaining the ‘vibe’ of its previous incarnation, they are also adding their own unique flair and style.

“We are making it a little bit more eclectic but definitely keeping the same vibe,” shared Aimee.

“I love that it’s a beautiful light filled space, there is a sense of calm as soon as you walk into the store, people love it and spend a lot of time browsing, so we want to make sure we retain that.”

They boast a range of carefully selected items, from uniquely scented candles and signature lamps to an eclectic mix of tableware and captivating ceramics range; and an inspiring assortment of soft furnishings with tantalising cushions you can’t help but squeeze. At Gypsy and the Bower Bird, there is so much to absorb the senses and delight the mind.

Originally from the UK, Melanie and Aimee moved to Australia in 2007 when Aimee was just 17 years old. Growing up in Mackay, Aimee now has a family of her own with two children aged 8 and 12. A close knit unit, spending time together is top of the list, especially with their four dachshunds, two belonging to each family, in tow. In their spare time, Aimee loves to explore her spiritual side with reiki and crystals, while Melanie enjoys travelling in the caravan and spending time with the grandchildren.

You will find both ladies gracing the counter at Gypsy and the Bower Bird most days, their positive energy and enthusiasm making the store blossom once again, continuing the good name, while planting fresh seeds for the future inspiration of your new gift and homeware goodies.

Melinda, and instead is the result of pure strength and resilience to push through many no’s and negative external factors.

When Melinda first entered the entrepreneurial landscape in 2007, she began her career in a male dominated industry. In navigating her way through various setbacks, Melinda found strength in the words written by inspirational author, Louise Hay, and believes her life would look drastically different if she hadn’t read Hay’s work.

“If I didn’t read her book, I don’t think I would be where I am today,” expressed Melinda passionately. “I was told there was no such thing as a woman that could go and support herself, run a business, look after her kids, get them to school, it all seemed impossible. No matter what anyone says, I can do it,” Melinda explained. “She showed me you can do whatever you want to do, and whatever you set your mind to.”

Melinda soon found power in the discouragement

she was met with in her career journey and built off her own experiences on the flip side of the industry to strengthen her business.

“I had property at a young age, and I had no help at all,” said Melinda. “I vowed that if anyone ever needed help, I was always there, because I still remember to this day what I went through without that support.”

Atestament to luxury, class, and poise, Adele Maujean casts her experienced eye over Whitsunday Blue Experienced Charter Advisors, leading the bespoke business with confidence and experience, influencing the industry with her compassionate drive, care, and customer-focused approach.

Relocating to the Whitsundays almost five years ago, a passion for the ocean compelled Adele to set alight her dream of establishing a new business within the charter industry, offering an intimate service to those wishing to experience the best way possible to explore the azure blue waters.

Since the early days of Whitsunday Blue Experienced Charter Advisors, Adele’s passion and expertise has continued to set her service a part. An illustrious career as Chief Stewardess and Maritime Operations Manager, as well as an upbringing on the coast of South Australia, has propelled Adele to venture out on her own, in order to fill the shortfalls she recognised in the industry.

“After years immersed in the industry, I found myself increasingly disheartened by the impersonal, transactional approach adopted by many agents in bustling cities,” Adele explained. “The prevalent ‘cookiecutter template’ left clients feeling disconnected and often let down, with a crucial lack of communication between them and the yacht.”

Establishing Whitsunday Blue Experienced Charter Advisors in early 2022, Adele is embarking on a desire to redefine the essence of what luxury yacht charters are, of ensuring perfect client satisfaction, meeting and exceeding expectations for everyone involved.

“Driven by a passion to rectify this gap, I took the leap to create a business model that prioritises experience, infuses a personal touch, and offers an all-inclusive package from the first interaction to the final farewell.”

With a powerful team behind her, Adele strives to deliver every single charter with perfect client satisfaction, and loves having helped create lasting memories imbued with opulence, luxury, and elegant charm. “It’s not just a service; it’s a shared passion for excellence and a dedication to making every journey extraordinary.”

Knowing no bounds, Whitsunday Blue Experienced Charter Advisors also caters their services for regions outside of the Whitsundays during off-season times. Adele is consistently in touch with her clients, always on-hand to help schedule and plan their next bespoke adventure, on board the large variety of vessels in her fleet.

Throughout her business’s growth, Adele has welcomed the challenges, powered through adversity, and created a service that aligns her passions, skills, and her individual vision.

“The challenges that come with it are all opportunities for growth, and the successes are not just personal victories but also reflections of the hard work and dedication poured into my endeavours,” Adele explained. “Ultimately, being a businesswoman is a source of pride, and I am excited about the endless possibilities that come with it.”

Leading the Coral Sea Resort team necessitates every skill, and her progressive rise prior to

TAILORED LIFESTYLE CONNECTIONS

A Legacy of Personalised Care and Support

Personalising support for Whitsunday and Mackay community members with a disability, Tailored Lifestyle Connections (TLC) has stood as a beacon of clientfocused excellence for over 35 years. The small not-for-profit boutique organisation, and the passionate team behind it, are dedicated to supporting people with disabilities to achieve their goals and assisting people to live meaningful lives. Founded in 1989 as Work Connection Limited by Phil Ross, the organisation initially operated as a disability employment provider under government auspices. In 2016, recognising the changing needs of the community, Tailored Lifestyle Connections underwent a transformative shift, branching into two essential umbrellasdisability employment and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) services. In August 2022, the organisation rebranded to Tailored Lifestyle Connections and became solely a NDIS provider, enabling the team to focus on comprehensively addressing the diverse needs of their clientele.

“Under the NDIS scheme, we provide an array of supports in line with client goals and choice and control which includes plan management, support coordination, in-home and community support access along with employment support,” CEO Josie Middleton explains.

The rebranding in August 2022 marked a significant milestone, solidifying Tailored Lifestyle Connections as a dedicated NDIS provider. Josie highlights the organisation’s core values, stating, “As a boutique business, we provide individual services to our clients with staff that genuinely care, are qualified and understand it’s about client choice and control. That’s just who we are, and that’s never wavered over those 36 years we’ve been operating as a disability provider.”

Josie, who served as the Business Manager for six years before becoming CEO, underscores the familial atmosphere within the organisation. The team of approximately 30, covering a range of roles from support workers to plan managers, work together like a closeknit family while keeping a separation of roles, to ensure the community is with the utmost care and support. Josie’s emphasis on work-life balance and flexibility has contributed to a remarkable staff retention rate.

“It really is a flexible, client-focused environment,” Josie said. “Our clients come first, however, as CEO, my philosophy is that I need to look after my staff first so they can then look after our incredible clients – this includes a healthy work-life balance along with ongoing training and support.”

The clients, of course, are the much-loved centre around which the TLC family operates. Highlighting the organisation’s approach to engagement, Josie notes, “Our clients are amazing. We operate a number of different services, and we have different staff specialising in those services. We’re clientfocused, fair, and ensure we do the right thing for both our clients and our staff members.”

Tailored Lifestyle Connections maintains a local focus, with a commitment to faceto-face interactions in the Mackay and Whitsundays areas. With its passionate, professional and approachable team, the organisation continues to make a positive impact in the disability services sector, driven by Josie Middleton’s unwavering commitment and the organisation’s enduring ethos of personalized care and support.

TEACH ME SOMETHING NEW

WITH LEA ANDREWS FROM THE BOATHOUSE APARTMENTS

From running schools and working within the education system to managing 33 apartments and overseeing a huge resort renovation, a lot has changed for Lea in the last two years since moving to Airlie Beach, with her family. Purchasing the Management Rights at The Boathouse in the Port of Airlie complex, Lea has embraced this massive career-change with gusto and, together with husband Ross, launched herself into the hectic, demanding world of hotel management.

Originally from Swan Hill in Northern Victoria, Lea has worked across multiple education systems over the years; from primary education to managing a flexible learning options school, and most recently an exclusively Brethren School. During the pandemic Lea conducted remote learning, teaching her students from home, whilst also raising her own three children alongside her husband. During the forced Covid isolation, the family had a lot of time to think, and also to dream. What had always been distant retirement plans suddenly felt more alluring and it wasn’t long before they started researching a sea change in Queensland. On one of these research missions, Lea discovered the perks and pleasures of owning the Management Rights to a resort and decided to explore this opportunity further.

Ross, who owned a construction business at the time, had the skills to professionally conduct a variety of maintenance tasks. Meanwhile, Lea was adept at managing people as the leader in several school environments. Bringing together their skill sets the couple knew that, even though they didn’t have direct experience in the industry, they did have the business acumen and leadership qualities to excel at the job.

When the opportunity to purchase and set up business as The Boathouse Apartments arose, they seized it with both hands.

However, two years ago when they first walked through the doors at The Boathouse Apartments they had little idea of the huge undertaking they were about to make. With the building approaching its 12th year in operation, it was overdue for quality maintenance and in need of an upgrade. For the past 24 months they have been leading the charge working with the apartment owners to improve the atheistic and quality of each of the 33 apartments under their management.

From cleaning and painting the external walls of the building to eradicating pesky Myna birds that were damaging the roof, right through to an entire redesign of the reception area which then flows into cohesive, similarly themed freshly renovated apartments. They have also introduced a fast and efficient WIFI system throughout, new air-conditioning units and technology upgrades in Reception and key system.

“We’ve been working closely with the Body Corporate who have been really accepting and positive about what we are trying to achieve,” explained Lea.

Deciding to branch away from the previous Mantra branding, Lea and Ross chose to become independent and follow their own direction, a decision they now know was right for their family owned and operated business. Being flexible and nimble has allowed them to make significant positive changes at The Boathouse Apartments, making substantial improvements in just two years, that could have otherwise taken a decade to achieve.

Enjoying the challenge and rewards of their new family business, Lea and her family have also been busy integrating themselves within the local community. With their older daughter studying at Monash University in Melbourne, Lea’s two teenage sons still live with them, attend a local school and have joined the local AFL Club. After school their oldest son works at the family business and has proved adept at many roles. In their spare time, the family like to take their boat out to Lake Proserpine where they enjoy water sports and fishing around the islands.

THE LIFE OF WOMEN IN REAL ESTATE

Family, Friends, And Work-Life Harmony

With Pinpoint Property

WHAT LIFESTYLE DO YOU LEAD?

“I would class myself as a ‘workaholic’ and like to keep myself busy.

“I love my job and therefore it doesn’t feel like I’m working! To try and counterbalance my work-life, I love to keep myself fit and spend quite a few hours every week paddling in an outrigger canoe. I find the ocean is my calming place.

“My children and grandchild also play a big part in my life, and I adore time spent with them.”

HOW DO YOU MANAGE ‘LIFE IN REAL ESTATE’?

“Finding a healthy work-life balance is super important.

“There is a lot of after-hours and weekend work, so making sure we take time out when we can and setting boundaries with late-night calls and messages.

“Family time is most important and switching off and relaxing at night is when we need it the most.”

WHAT IS BEHIND A ‘WOMAN IN REAL ESTATE’?

Behind every woman in real estate is a supportive partner or family who understands some days are much longer than others, and who will put a delicious and love-filled meal in front of them when they come through that door.

“Friends who understand that Sundays are always better for plans than Saturdays.

“A supportive team of like-minded women by your side every step of the way.

Jesse Dingle

EVERYONE AT PINPOINT PROPERTY IS SO PERSONABLE, HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE THAT?

“By valuing relationships over transactions, we highlight the significance of human connection, driven by our genuine care and intent for both our clients and each other.

“Through team-building events, a supportive team culture and trust, we foster great camaraderie and collaboration.

“This balanced approach maintains a professional yet approachable atmosphere, enabling exceptional service and a positive and enjoyable workplace culture.”

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER

AGENCIES AND TEAMS?

“Real estate is a very competitive industry. “Remembering you’re dealing with a person, yourself, your ethics, each other - these are the values that have us putting clients first and the transaction second.

“Our team is hyper-aware of each other on a daily basis. Each other’s challenges, our strengths, and workplace happiness, we strongly protect so that we can continue giving the best version of ourselves to our clients and each other.

“Everyone we deal with should be made to feel a part of the Pinpoint Property team and this family we have created.”

Allison Cunningham

HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE CHANGING PRIORITIES IN A DAY OF REAL ESTATE?

I think it’s important to first let go of the 9 - 5pm and embrace the fact you have 24 hours in your day. We deal with time sensitive transactions and the fact that there are so many variables involved. It’s a fast paced industry and I love it but it’s definitely the amazing support of my family and colleagues that allow me to keep up!

UNEARTHING TREASURES

With Tammie Lewis from Incredable Tip Shop

In the heart of Mackay lies a hidden gem that goes beyond your typical thrift store—it’s the Incredable Tip Shop, a not-for-profit social enterprise helmed by a woman on a mission, Tammie Lewis. With a vision to provide secure and supportive employment opportunities for disadvantaged individuals, the Incredable Tip Shop provides opportunity in the community, not to mention surprising bargains in every corner.

“We’re not just a shop; we’re a social win-win,” Tammie explains.

“By purchasing from us, you’re not only saving money, but you’re also keeping other people employed.”

The shop’s self-funded business model ensures that it remains a vital lifeline for those struggling to find employment.

“What’s sold here keeps a wide range of people employed who may otherwise struggle to find work,” Tammie said.

For many, a job at the Incredable Tip Shop represents more than just a pay cheque, it’s a chance at a brighter future.

“It’s an opportunity to step up, progress, and move forward,” Tammie reflects, recalling heartwarming moments that epitomise the shop’s impact.

“I’ll never forget when a former employee, who had faced his own medical battles, donated $500 to the business,” Tammie shares.

“He said, ‘Without you guys, I would have never gotten a start.’

“He ended up progressing to another career and worked hard to advance himself and get a pay rise.

“While working with us, he also had a close family member pass away, so he had faced a very challenging time in his life.

“He said he had been waiting a while to pay it back to the organisation who had given him his start.

“It’s moments like these that remind me of the lasting impressions we leave on

people.”

With each visit to the Incredable Tip Shop, customers embark on a treasure hunt of sorts, never quite knowing what hidden gems they’ll uncover.

“There’s always something different,” Tammie says with a smile.

“I’ve been here for 10 years, and there’s not a day that goes by where I’m not astounded by what turns up.”

It’s not just lip service, everything Tammie is wearing in this photo she was able to purchase from the Incredable Tip Shop.

Beyond her dedication to the shop and its diverse team of people, Tammie’s personal journey is equally inspiring. Despite facing the challenges of single motherhood, she has built a remarkable career while raising five children and welcoming seven grandchildren into the world.

“I believe I stay younger because of my children,” Tammie shares.

“I’ve had children in my 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, in fact my oldest grandchild is only a year younger than my youngest child.”

In recognition of her unwavering dedication, Tammie was honoured with the Women Who Make Us Proud award by the Mackay Regional Council in 2016, along with the prestigious Mary Field Award for her outstanding contributions to the waste industry in 2023.

Beyond the workplace, her spiritual connection through crystals and reading keeps her grounded. She shares her time between Mackay and Gladstone, where she spends days off on 50 acres of rural land where she can recharge and re-energise, ready to lead her diverse team for another week.

Her commitment to creating positive change and fostering a sense of community remains unwavering. With each sale and every smile, she proves that true treasures can be found in the most unexpected of places. incredable.org.au

UNVEILING THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY OF NIKITA CROSSWELL

One day, years ago, Nikita Crosswell approached the door of a client, a man whose wife had recently passed away. As a medium and spiritual healer, she had been asked to visit the man by his daughter, as the man feared his wife would move on without him in the afterlife. As Nikita raised her clenched fist to knock on the door, an overwhelming sense urged her not to.

“Often I’ll pick up things before I enter someone’s place or I’ll start to feel something before I get there,” Nikita explained. “Against what I’d normally do, I pushed the doorbell instead, and when my client opened the door, I saw this spirit, which was a little lady, walking down the hallway.”

As Nikita got to know the man and his daughter, she enquired about the feeling she got outside the house, pushing her to ring the doorbell instead of knocking on the door, and that’s when the daughter explained the custom of the house.

“That was a thing at our house,” the daughter told Nikita. “Mum used to make sure that visitors rang the doorbell, no one was allowed to knock on the door.”

Connecting with the family, Nikita brought peace to the man who was convinced his wife was too beautiful to wait for him in the afterlife.

“It was really beautiful,” she reflected. “I got to explain everything about his wife, and I got to bring him peace and happiness and allow him to connect with her again.”

Psychic Expo. Nikita’s abilities expanded, reaching clients from Victoria to Cairns, offering video readings to connect with a broader audience. Formerly a travel agent, Nikita’s clientele predominantly grew through word of mouth, a testament to the unique and personalised experiences she provides.

“It happened very naturally,” she said. “I had a typical job, and I slowly progressed into what felt natural, and I’ve just followed that.”

While Nikita refrains from labelling her abilities as a “gift,” she believes everyone can tap into their innate senses.

“I think everyone can open up parts of themselves to feel,” she said. “I just see it as being very open to receive.”

Beyond medium work, Nikita offers a range of services, including oracle card readings, reiki, breathwork, and spiritual counselling. Her five senses—feel, see, taste, touch, and smell— allow her to tailor experiences for each client. She emphasises the importance of teaching mindfulness, stillness, and confidence, and shares a message of open-mindedness to the sceptics.

“Don’t be frightened and be curious,” she advises. “I think everyone can grow and have some sort of self-development in some aspect. Each individual is completely different, and I welcome the sceptics.”

Nikita’s journey into spirituality began in her childhood. She found herself able to tap into the energies around her and discovered that she wasn’t the only one, this unique ability a generational one that had been passed on to her. Now known as That.Hippi, Nikita has carved out a unique space for herself as a businesswoman and spiritual healer. With a captivating blend of openness, friendliness, and a profound connection to the spiritual realm, Nikita welcomes all to explore the depths of their inner selves.

“Spirituality is for everybody, it’s not just for the kooky and spooky and dark,” Nikita said. “I’m very open and friendly and I want everybody to experience it.”

What started as readings for friends in Airlie Beach soon evolved into a profession, catching the attention of the Australian

Navigating the obstacles of criticism in her line of work, Nikita stays true to herself, fostering transparency and approachability. Her dedication to authenticity has inspired her to grow the business, with plans to include an informative YouTube channel while expanding into women’s healing circles and retreats in the future. Inspired by her great grandmother, Nikita follows this spiritual path and hopes to share it with the Burdekin and wider north Queensland community.

“I have a long line of strong women in my family, and they all stood for something different in their own time,” Nikita said. “My great grandmother stood up for what she believed in in a time when it was absolutely taboo and, now we’re in a time where we can share and I can do what I can do, I have a bit of responsibility to help people.”

The Artistry And Heart Behind Neoh Phoenix Photography

n a world where every snapshot tells a story, Maree Rowles, Photographer and Owner/Director of Neoh Phoenix Photography (NPP), masterfully weaves narratives through her lens. Behind her talent lies a bustling family life and a journey of self-discovery that enriches her artistry.

At home, Maree finds solace and inspiration in her four children, each a testament to love, resilience, and the beauty of individuality.

Raiden Chase, 14, Tidan Lynx, 12, Neoh Phoenix, 10, and Asha Martini, 5, bring both joy and challenge to Maree’s daily routine. Two of her children navigate the world with autism spectrum disorder, adding layers of depth and understanding to her perspectives.

Maree shares, “My family and career life balance is not easy.

“I have one child that I strongly feel should be diagnosed and one child that was discharged from early intervention through Uniting Care a few years ago. Instead of my kids doing sports they would do therapy.”

Maree’s children have undergone significant growth and development, particularly in their ability to engage with the world around them. Through therapy and dedicated support, they have reached a point where they can now enjoy activities like sports, marking a significant milestone in their journey.

“We have three boys playing rugby league and our daughter is in her 5th year of dance, so our plates and hearts are full,” Maree shared.

Her husband Nathan, a pillar of support and strength, stands alongside her, enabling Maree to pursue her passion while nurturing their family.

“He is the one I can rely on emotionally to get me through,” she shared. “I worked nights for 9 going on 10 years to support my family so Nathan was on the night shift at home while I was on the night shift at work.”

In Maree’s world, every click of the camera captures not just images but cherished memories and untold tales. From glamorous maternity shoots to heartwarming family portraits, Maree infuses each frame with authenticity and emotion.

Maree is well-known for her family portraits, particularly in understanding the empathy required to capture children with spectrum disorders, however she is fine-tuning the art of intimate wedding photography and this is an area she is focusing on in 2024.

Transitioning to intimate weddings, she brings a personal touch to every ceremony, immortalising love in its purest form.

Maree’s artistic flair isn’t confined to photography; she’s a dynamic presence on stage as well. From her lead role as Stacy in “X-Stacy” to captivating audiences as the female lead in “Man of Steel,” Maree’s versatility shines. Her passion for singing and acting is evident in her diverse roles, including her portrayal of Geraldine Barclay in “What The Butler Saw” and her recent supporting lead performance as Mel in “Never Enough.”

As Maree continues to illuminate lives through her lens, her story serves as a reminder that amidst life’s chaos, beauty can be found in every frame.

What's the craziest thing that's happened to you in business so far?

“I was photographing my best friend’s family for her 40th birthday as a present to her.

“I asked everyone a question to get a more natural shot. I got more than I bargained for when her eldest child, her son, yelled out quite a shocking answer!

“Everyone's reactions made for an absolutely perfect candid photo that we all will never forget.

“It's one of my favourite pictures.”

THE BEAUTIFUL BOUTIQUE TOUCH

Of Kiara Buckby of Weddings of the Whitsundays

The elegance of the event and the thrill of endorphins on the dawning eve of a wedding is a feeling that Kiara Buckby continues to chase, a journey which has resulted in the flourishing Weddings of the Whitsundays business, a leading name in boutique and bespoke weddings. It all began when Kiara made the ultimate decision to relocate from her hometown on the northwest coast of Tasmania to the Whitsundays in 2007, to further pursue her hospitality profession. Not too dissimilar to wedding coordination, Kiara is perfectly attuned to the fast paced environment and high pressure situation of a perfectly timed

wedding day, which led her to joining the Weddings of the Whitsundays team 18 months ago before her eventual acquisition of the business in mid 2023.

Joining the team at Weddings of the Whitsundays was a seamless transition, allowing Kiara to get out of the kitchen and keep her finger on the pulse with her beautiful clients, planning, organising, designing and ensuring the picture perfect wedding ceremony that lives on in guests memories for years to come.

Kiara continues to excel with the budding business busier than ever under her leadership. Having always had a talent for event planning and management, it was inevitable for her exceptional

success to greet her at the end of a busy Whitsunday wedding season.

“However, the thing I value most,” Kiara explained, “Is having the opportunity to bring someone’s dream wedding day to life. Experiencing the love and excitement of everyone on the day is a privilege.” Utilising only the best and most prestigious suppliers, industry professionals and expertise, Kiara’s vision blends seamlessly with her clients, who range from local couples picturing a youthful and quaint elopement in the hills of the Whitsundays, to international and interstate couples looking for a wedding event as grand as their pristine love.

And with Kiara’s finger on the pulse approach, she ensures a perfect event, from the first point of contact to the moment the rings are slipped on, till the last wedding guest slips into bed, everything is uniquely coordinated with ease and perfection. Kiara spends her free time with her two teenage daughters, enjoying their energy and laughter, and creating long lasting memories.

Kiara’s best piece of advice for aspiring businesswomen?

“Life is such a precious gift, and it is yours to do with what you wish. Have faith in yourself. I believe Eleanor Roosevelt said ‘the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams’.”

A GREEN REVOLUTION WITH AMANDA CLIFTON-SMITH FROM MEDI EXTRACT

Swapping Stilettos for designer thongs, Amanda changed her career and her continent to discover her true calling in life and finally find fulfillment in becoming her own boss. For years, she thrived in various corporate management roles in her homeland of South Africa, leading teams and experiencing great success. Ultimately, however, Amanda knew something was missing and by giving it all up she paved the way to finding true happiness.

Amanda was always motivated to reach her potential and experience the best out of life. Her parents were both ambitious; her dad got his springbok colours for wrestling and once held the torch in the African Olympics. Meanwhile, her mother was very artsy and inspiring.

These two influential figures in her life encouraged Amanda to reach for the stars. She studied Communication and PR and was soon headhunted for a South African Mining company where she worked for eight years. She then ventured into hospitality where she was soon promoted to the Group Sustainability Manager. This prestigious career was juggled with raising two children as a single mum.

“Throughout my career I always had a natural drive to be competitive and be the best,” she said.

“I’ve always put my heart and soul into any task I do. However, I always felt something was lacking, I never felt fulfilled.”

After 18 years of high-level, but ultimately empty, success, Amanda knew it was time for a change in the pursuit of real fulfillment. She decided to take a three-month sabbatical which set her life on a new trajectory and enabled her to meet the love of her life, fiancé and business partner Justin Lowe. For the past eight years, the two of them have collaborated in love, life and business, which has opened doors and taken Amanda in an unexpected new direction.

Both successful professionals, Amanda and Justin decided to purchase a farm in South Africa where, under a Health Authority license, they cultivate and manufacture S8 pharmaceutical medicine which is exported to Australia. They also started an Import and Wholesale company, Medi Extract, which is licensed under both the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, Narcotics Control Section and the Queensland Health Department. The warehouse, which is located locally, distributes the pharmaceutical medicines directly to pharmacies around Australia.

All the medicines supplied by Medi Extract are available on prescription from doctors only and being prescribed for a range of conditions that include but are not limited to anxiety, depression, chronic pain and insomnia. Medi Extract is proud to supply high quality products at an affordable prices, something that Amanda deeply believes in and has since found great fulfilment in delivering to pharmacies across Australia.

“Each time I receive an order from a pharmacy, I know it is going to help someone cope with their health symptom in a natural way and this completes me, it makes me feel very content knowing this is what we are doing every day,” she shared.

“And I’ve become to realise it is not the success of the business that fulfills me but the realisation that I now know what my purpose is. Nothing makes me feel more satisfied and fulfilled than knowing I can bring quality medication at affordable pricing to people who have always needed it but couldn’t afford the quality because of the pharmaceutical system.”

Amanda lives in Shute Harbour and in her spare time, she loves cooking, entertaining and shopping, but these days instead of inner-city stores, she frequents the boutique fashion shops in Airlie Beach or treats herself to a massage.

“My weakness still remains stilettos, designer bags and sunglasses and I have a great selection of them, but I don’t use them much unless I’m going travelling!”.

ROBYN AGIUS AREA SPECIALIST

In the heart of the Pioneer Valley’s real estate rhythm, Robyn Agius has emerged as the Area Specialist, knowledgeably guiding residents into their own lush piece of paradise. No deception or drama, just the nuanced expertise of a professional managing seamless transitions into new chapters within the thriving heart of the valley’s canopy.

Robyn has lived in Mackay since 1997, experiencing both the beachside lifestyle of East Mackay and the peaceful paradise of the Pioneer Valley. Calling Marian home for around 21 years, Robyn is the epitome of what it means to have an ‘area specialist’ in your corner.

“I am delighted to see the growth in the Pioneer Valley, we have a fabulous collection of artisan businesses scattered all through the valley and the capital growth of property assets in the area are finally starting to reflect realistic values compared to other suburbs in the Mackay region,” Robyn said.

Before venturing into the world of property, Robyn built an impressive career in corporate management and business ownership, where the foundations of customer focus and hard work were laid. Her career mantra, “customer service isn’t ‘a thing,’ it is ‘the thing’,” reflects a commitment to excellence that transcends industries.

“Moral integrity and delivering excellent service is my priority,” Robyn said.

“Early in my career I saw someone comment on social media ‘you’d have a better chance at finding a unicorn’ than a real estate agent who was trustworthy and reliable, which is a shame, because I know some very good agents.”

“It’s certainly an interesting industry and I’ve met some wonderful people, I just focus on operating my business in a way that I am proud of, honouring my personal values and doing the best I can for my clients.”

In 2020, Robyn embarked on a three-month hiatus to rejuvenate, then was drawn to the prospect of a career where she could fuse her business acumen with a deep knowledge of the Pioneer Valley. The call of real estate beckoned, and later that year, she found herself at Hugh Reilly—a business renowned for moral integrity in the Mackay Region.

While Robyn enjoyed her time as part of a team, the saying, “once a business owner, always a business owner” rang true. Robyn wanted to take the reins of her own destiny and evolve her career where she could set her own priorities and create a business model that reflected her values and work ethic.

She came across the Area Specialist brand and knew it was for her.

“Everything about Area Specialist was on point for me. The professionalism, the sharp branding, the quick communication and the organisation,” she said.

“It’s a very efficient workplace, the background programs are top of the line and it’s an affordable selling platform which brings excellent value to my clients, both buyers and sellers.”

Being the master of her own destiny under the Area Specialist brand provides Robyn the flexibility to serve her clients with the utmost value and confidence.

Ranging from offering free property appraisals throughout the Mackay region, assisting in preparing properties for sale with her team of highly skilled professionals, to unique off market sale strategies designed especially for our older generation, those who are privacy conscious and sellers who are too busy to fuss with open homes every weekend. Robyn Agius - doing Real Estate the old-fashioned way, but with modern systems and first-class service, ensuring happy sellers and happy buyers. robyna.areaspecialist.com.au

As the Optometrist and Practice Owner of Eyecare Plus Ayr, Shannon Peckham wears many hats, seamlessly blending her professional expertise with a commitment to community wellbeing and empowerment. Shannon has been recognised as Australia’s the first female indigenous optometrist and practice owner and, in a profession that has the lowest percentage of indigenous members of all the allied health professions, is a pioneer in her field. As Shannon and her team provide the Burdekin with professional and personalised optical care, she also hopes to inspire other young women to explore professions that they may not have considered before.

A VISIONARY IN EYECARE

SHANNON PECKHAM OF EYECARE PLUS AYR

Shannon’s journey into the world of optometry traces back to her roots in Mareeba. Her high school years in Townsville and university studies in Melbourne paved the way for a career that now spans two impactful decades. Optometry, for Shannon, emerged as the ideal profession where she could make a difference in people’s lives without dealing with the sight of blood. She has provided eyecare services across the country, her satisfaction lying in meeting new people and travelling to new locations, especially places lacking in accessible health services.

“Helping people to see better improves their quality of life,” she said. “It allows people to perform the activities they enjoy and see more clearly the people and places they love. I enjoy educating people about their eye health and finding the perfect unique eyecare solution for their visual needs.”

Shannon leads a friendly and knowledgeable team that work hard to provide the best possible experience to their patients of the Burdekin. With a focus on improving skills in spectacles selection, fitting and adjustments, customers can rest assured they will leave Eyecare Plus happy with their custom-made eye wear solutions. Eyecare Plus, under Shannon’s leadership, has flourished over the past three years, offering a comprehensive range of services including vision assessments, eye health examinations and driver’s licence vision assessments as well as a wide variety of spectacles, sunglasses and contacts lenses. The clinic also stands out for its commitment to ocular therapeutics. Shannon is uniquely qualified to prescribe treatments for various eye conditions, and the practise boasts the latest technology in visual fields assessment and retinal photography. A passionate advocate for accessible healthcare, Shannon is embedded in her profession and has worked alongside Indigenous Allied Health Australia and is a board member of the Optometry Council for Australia and New Zealand. One pinnacle moment in Shannon’s illustrious career came in 2014 when she was bestowed with the Optometrist of the Year Australia award by OPSM. Beyond the walls of the practise, Shannon is a mother of two young children and has recently taken up golf, relishing moments outdoors whenever her busy schedule permits. In telling Shannon’s story, it becomes evident that she is not just an optometrist; she is a visionary, a community advocate, and a trailblazer who has carved a path for others to follow. She has established Eyecare Plus not only as a thriving business but also a hub of empowerment and inspiration for the Burdekin community and beyond. eyecareplus.com.au/ayr

CHANGING LIVES ONE PRESS AT A TIME

Laura Hamilton

At Elegance Beauty and Lymphatic Services, a revolution has been quietly unfolding—one press at a time.

Using a blend of traditional and technologically advanced lymphatic massage treatments, this clinic in Marian has been extending a lifeline of hope and relief to those wrestling with lymphoedema, chronic venous insufficiency, and lipoedema.

This groundbreaking treatment is causing waves of excitement and has become the go-to solution for a range of people, including those recovering from surgical oedema, mastectomies and knee replacements to professional athletes and everyone in-between.

At the helm of this transformative venture is Laura Hamilton, a dedicated lipoedema advocate and experienced practitioner who understands the profound impact that these conditions can have on one’s quality of life.

Laura’s journey from a career in childhood education in her younger days to the realm of lymphatic therapy was fuelled by her own battle with lymphoedema and lipoedema. A former competitive athlete in netball and swimming, Laura faced a series of setbacks after sustaining sports-related injuries necessitating two knee reconstructions.

Despite her dedication to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exploring various dietary approaches, she found herself grappling with persistent leg swelling and subsequent weight gain. Despite trying everything and not being able to exercise due to the knee injury which required a total knee replacement, the scales finally tipped to breaking point of 139.6kg. She then with much resistance underwent surgery to have a gastric sleeve. Despite losing 45kg as a result of this procedure, her battle with swelling and sore legs persisted, eventually leading to a diagnosis of lipoedema by a vein specialist on the Gold Coast.

Frustrated by years of personal struggle and a lack of effective solutions, Laura embarked on a relentless quest for knowledge, initially driven by the desire to alleviate her own symptoms. This journey led her to delve deeper into the complexities of lipoedema and lymphoedema, undertaking a diploma and various training courses expanding her understanding far beyond her initial intentions.

Over time, her personal pursuit evolved into a profound passion to not only help

herself but also to empower others facing similar challenges. This quest for knowledge ultimately inspired Laura to establish Elegance Beauty & Lymphatic Services, where she could offer specialised treatments and compassionate care to individuals struggling with lymphatic conditions.

In her purpose-built treatment rooms in Marian, Laura offers a range of therapeutic services, with a special focus on the groundbreaking LymphaPress, the new Raincorp cold low-level laser machine (TGA approved) whilst still incorporating traditional lymphatic drainage massage techniques, taping and compression garment fittings for a range of body shapes.

The LymphaPress, a cutting-edge compression system, has emerged as a game-changer in the treatment landscape, offering relief and rehabilitation to individuals across various spectrums, from people with chronic Lymphoedema, athletes seeking accelerated recovery to children on the spectrum with sensory needs. Laura’s firsthand experience with the power of the LymphaPress led to her advocating its efficacy in managing swelling conditions and promoting overall well-being.

Laura’s unwavering commitment to her patients is evident in her holistic approach, which combines state-of-the-art technology with personalised treatments tailored to each individual’s needs. From consultations to decongestive lymphatic therapy, Laura ensures that every aspect of the patient’s journey is met with empathy and expertise by a fully qualified ALAregistered provider.

By bridging the gap between lived experiences and medical expertise, Laura is not only transforming individual lives but also shaping the future of lymphatic therapy throughout the Mackay region. elegancecare.com.au
