Prepare for a remarkable adventure as you explore the thriving coastal city of Townsville. With a host of enticing activities and attractions, this vibrant hub

TOWNSVILLE

A Tropical Paradise

promises a tropical holiday of a lifetime. While you might recognise this enchanting North Queensland locale for its picturesque palm-fringed esplanade, ‘The Strand,’ and its role as the gateway to the mesmerising Magnetic Island, Townsville has a wealth of treasures waiting to be uncovered. Here, you can immerse yourself in the authentic local way of life, embracing magnificent hiking trails, savouring delectable culinary delights, meandering through vibrant night markets, and finding serenity in lush botanical gardens.

EXPLORE THE MUSEUM OF TROPICAL QUEENSLAND Delve into the rich tapestry of North Queensland's cultural and natural heritage at the award-winning Museum of Tropical Queensland, located in the heart of Townsville. This family-friendly institution presents a captivating journey through time, unraveling the story of life in the tropics, from ancient times to the present day. Key highlights include the World Heritage-listed rainforests and coral reefs that grace Townsville's vicinity, as well as the fascinating tale of HMS Pandora. A replica of the ship and artifacts recovered from the wreckage are on display in the Great Gallery, offering a glimpse into this maritime history.

DIVE INTO AUSTRALIA'S FIRST UNDERWATER MUSEUM Dive into the depths of the Great Barrier Reef and discover a one-of-a-kind experience. Townsville proudly hosts the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA), a unique institution that stands as the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere. MOUA, a collaboration with renowned underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, is a testament to reef conservation, restoration, and education. It also pays tribute to the First Nations people of the region. The first installation, "Ocean Siren," emerges from the waters along The Strand, responding to live variations in water temperature. The second installation, "Coral Greenhouse," rests on John Brewer Reef, a two-hour boat ride from Townsville, and invites snorkelers and divers to witness the thriving reef life it nurtures. CONQUER CASTLE HILL FOR BREATHTAKING VIEWS For panoramic vistas of Townsville, the ocean, and Magnetic Island, there's no better vantage point than Castle Hill. This heritage-listed pink granite monolith presides majestically over the city skyline. Embark on a sunset hike to the summit for an unforgettable experience. Several trails lead to the top, including the challenging Goat Track, a short but steep ascent that begins just outside the CBD. The more popular Cudtheringa Track, accessible from the base of Castle Hill Road in North Ward, offers a moderate midsection and breathtaking views, making it a favorite among hikers.

DISCOVER A WONDERLAND OF WATERFALLS Venture north from Townsville to immerse yourself in the breathtaking Paluma Range National Park, the gateway to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Within an hour, you'll reach Little Crystal Creek, a serene oasis beloved by Townsville locals. Here, you can take a refreshing dip in the freshwater creek, which is fed by a picturesque cascading waterfall and framed by a heritage-listed stone arch bridge constructed during the 1930s depression era. It's an idyllic spot to cool off during the tropical summer.

MAGNETIC ISLAND

Beckons

MUST-DO ACTIVITIES ON MAGGIE

Just off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is pulling you toward relaxation, offering the perfect ambiance for a tropical island escape. Best of all, it’s merely a 20-minute ferry ride away, making it an accessible and affordable option for day trips, weekend getaways, or extended vacations. It’s a haven for adventure seekers and relaxation enthusiasts alike, boasting some of Australia’s most secluded and picturesque beaches. HOW TO ARRIVE Magnetic Island Ferries ensures you reach Magnetic Island, along with your vehicle, in just 40 minutes! This makes it an ideal choice for a day trip or an extended sojourn, allowing you to explore the island’s vast 40 kilometres of roads, including some challenging 4x4 tracks. Multiple daily departure times are available but remember that vehicle reservations are essential. SeaLink passenger ferry service is an easy and convenient way to travel to Magnetic Island by foot. Meanwhile, SeaLink Travel takes the hassle out of planning an island escape by offering a range of Magnetic Island exploration packages that are fully customisable to ensure you make the most of your time on the island. With numerous daily trips, creating the perfect paradise getaway has never been easier.

FORTS WALK Explore the most popular walking experience on the island, the Forts Walk, which showcases the highlights of Magnetic Island National Park. Wander through eucalypt and acacia woodlands, where you might even spot wild koalas in the stunted trees. As you ascend, you'll encounter well-preserved WWII concrete fortifications nestled among granite boulders and hoop pines. The Forts Walk is a heritage-listed site, safeguarding the best-preserved WWII coastal defence fortifications in Queensland. An interpretive display sheds light on the site's ruins and constructions, breathing life into the stories of the men and women who served on Magnetic Island during the war. Allocate two hours for the return journey, setting off in the morning when the weather is cooler, and the humidity is lower.

BUNGALOW BAY KOALA VILLAGE Immerse yourself in nature at Bungalow Bay Koala Village, the only Australian resort with its own onsite wildlife park. This compact wildlife park offers more hands-on experiences than many larger parks, without the crowds and lengthy walks. Interact with a baby crocodile, get up close and personal with a koala, feed a black cockatoo, handle lizards and turtles, and even drape snakes across your shoulders. As an eco-accredited establishment, Bungalow Bay offers guests the chance to learn about and interact with unique wildlife. On-site rangers conduct daily tours, sharing local stories and providing personal experiences with native Australian wildlife.

UNCOVER SHIPWRECKS Magnetic Island offers serene and safe snorkeling opportunities, with fringing coral reefs near the shore teeming with marine life. Each bay provides distinct viewing experiences, but the Geoffrey Bay Snorkel Trail is perhaps Maggie's most famous spot to snorkel. Just stroll off the beach and follow the numbered surface floats that guide your underwater journey. Here, you can view the Moltke wreck. For more experienced swimmers, exploring the WWII aeroplane propeller and engine block (from a CW-22B Curtiss Falcon) is another exciting opportunity.

PROTECTING

PARADISE

Marine biologist Amelia Keynes

A

melia Keynes, the Living Reef Manager at Daydream Island Resort & Living Reef, is a passionate advocate for sustainable tourism and the preservation of the stunning Great Barrier Reef. Through her work and that of her dedicated team of marine biologists, she strives to educate visitors and restore the reef’s natural beauty. Amelia and her team host a range of Living Reef tours, including the popular Living Reef guided snorkel tour. These excursions offer guests an opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of coral ecosystems. Amelia highlights the support that tourists can provide in preserving the underwater environment. “The threats to corals in the Whitsundays are similar to those of the outer reef, the number one threat is

climate change and increases in global average sea surface temperatures,” she said.

“We have out planted about 2000 fragments of coral in Lovers Cove using various methods that are best suited for the challenges of the site for coral survival,” she said.

“We do experience a high level of run-off which causes water quality issues, increase in nutrients and sedimentation. Increased nutrients increases algae growth which smothers coral, much like weeds in a garden.”

“We have already seen promising results from the out planted corals with an 85 per cent survival rate after four years of the project.” The marine biologists at Daydream Island also collect invaluable data that enables them to monitor changes in the reef’s health.

Beyond education, Daydream Island undertakes significant conservation efforts, exemplified by the Lovers Cove Reef Restoration Project. “Planting coral is the equivalent of planting trees, not only in restoring a habitat but also in being a carbon sink,” Amelia said. This initiative is fundamental in the island’s commitment to giving back to the reef, ensuring its long-term survival.

Amelia and her team at Daydream Island are not just caretakers of a stunning paradise; they are educators, advocates, and champions of conservation, determined to ensure that the Great Barrier Reef remains a treasure for generations to come.

MEET REEF CRUSADER JAMES UNSWORTH

P

rotecting the reef and raising awareness for its preservation is an integral part of the job for Ocean Rafting’s Environmental Manager, James Unsworth. From conducting reef surveys to educating groups of school children and replanting coral, James and his team are working at the forefront of the eco-tourism industry. James’ passion for the reef and inspiring others was recognised at the Whitsunday Tourism Awards recently where he won the Young Achiever of the Year Award. Involved with countless projects across the Whitsundays, James is making a real difference to the local marine environment and preserving it for tourists like you for years to come. Renowned as much for their environmental conscience as they are for their spirit of adventure, Ocean Rafting are leading the way in many environmental initiatives and are always among the first to put their hands up to survey and protect the reef. One of James’ favourite projects is the Reef Seeker Program, which is an educational school initiative started by the company during the pandemic.

Additionally, the crew are all involved with the Reef Protection Initiative which actively monitors the health of the reef around the islands.

Delivering Eye on the Reef and Citizen Science programs, James helps children study and survey the reef, reporting all data back to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks Association (GBRMPA).

They have conducted 1,400 reef survey expeditions over the past 10 months and successfully controlled 40 Crown of Thorns Starfish and 800 Drupella Snails, which are known to damage the reef ecosystems.

Last financial year, Ocean Rafting took more than 2,000 students out to the reef, with over half of them actively involved in the Reef Seeker Program.

James and the team are also heavily involved in quarterly marine debris clean-ups, aerial monitoring

of whales, monthly water quality surveys and the Coral Nurture Program. “I encourage anyone who has a passion for protecting the reef to come out and experience it with guides who are leading the way in reef protection initiatives,” said James. “They can seek volunteer opportunities and engage – people want to have meaningful experiences and we can help them achieve that dream.”
