PUBLISHERS: Cordillera Ranch Development Corporation Traveling Blender, LLC

The beginning of a new year seems to bring a time of reflection and a look forward at what’s to come. Reflection gives us a chance to learn, remember and perhaps measure our own expectations of the year prior. Many of us will have resolutions and goals, some of which are met and some of which, well we’ll just say, are postponed to a later date! The past 12 months have seen a lot of new in Cordillera Ranch. For the first time in years, we were able to bring new homesites to market in both Clubs Village and along the Guadalupe River in The Springs. Also making its debut in 2023 was the new gated enclave of Hawk Canyon near the Highway 46 main entrance that features Hill Country views for miles. More than 100 new homes are in some stage of construction or architectural review, and an additional 100-plus new families decided to become a part of Cordillera Ranch over the past year with the purchase of real estate. It was certainly a year to remember, and one we can all be thankful for. As we look forward, 2024 promises to bring even more new, most notably with the upcoming addition of the Pool Cabana. I’m certain there will be many more milestones, new families to welcome and friendships that will be made. So, so long 2023! You were great and we won’t forget you. And 2024, you already look interesting, and we can’t wait to see what you have in store for us. CHEERS!

MANAGER’S MESSAGE

2023:

A YEAR OF TREASURED TRADITIONS & NEW EXPERIENCES By Marc DeWall, General Manager

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and Holiday Season! While we have much to look forward to in the upcoming year, 2023 certainly was a year to remember at the Club so I thought I would take a look back and share a few of the highlights. Who can forget the fire that started at the Club in late February?! While it created devastation to the PDR and damage to the MDR, we were so fortunate to not have anyone hurt. The local fire stations were fantastic in their response, and it was remarkable to see our own team of employees jump in and do everything possible to lessen the blow and keep the Clubhouse from further damage. Thank you to all of our members for their patience as we worked through getting back open in phases for dining and for their support during that time. The golf course was once again in fantastic shape under the leadership of Director of Agronomy Stuart Rowland. His team faced record heat and drought conditions throughout the summer and worked tirelessly to keep the greens and golf course in excellent shape. Katie Dillard continued her strong Player Development Program for juniors and in the fall was named the Club’s Director of Instruction so congratulations to her! The Fitness and Spa program saw continued growth with a couple of new Personal Trainers now on board. It has been fun to watch Tamra Christiansen’s growth as the director of that area. She continues to look for new offerings and is always thinking outside the box for ways to keep our members in shape! I am thankful to have Michael McLellan as the Director of Food and Beverage and the feedback I continue to receive on his behalf has been very positive. Chef Isaac and the culinary team have been rock stars and, of course, are looking forward to the new kitchen. I am not sure how pickleball continues to grow at a record pace but somehow it does! It has been great to see so many people playing at all hours of the day on the new courts that were opened in 2022. It is a game that can be played by people of all ages and is very social. We are all looking forward to the opening of the new Cabana next month! It is going to be a special venue that will offer a slightly different dining experience and, of course, offer another special event space for all of our members to utilize. The kitchen expansion is well underway and will provide some much-needed space, and is being installed with new state-of-theart equipment. We hope to see you at the Club soon and, as always, please let us know if we can do anything to make your experience here even better. Wishing all of you a wonderful year full of good health and happiness! Marc DeWall, PGA, is the General Manager at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. He can be reached at mdewall@cordilleraranch.com and 830.336.9151.

STAFF PROFILE

NICHLAS POOLE Men’s Grill Supervisor in Training 210.710.7831 HOMETOWN: New Orleans, Louisiana FAMILY MEMBERS: Daughters, Demi Poole and Raynesha George

WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR CORDILLERA RANCH? My first job was at a yacht club in New Orleans, and I was employed there for six years. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE? Up until this point, my most rewarding experience was when I worked on a vacation boat and traveled across half of the U.S. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGE? Every position I’ve held professionally has always been more challenging and prosperous than the last — on up to the present here at Cordillera Ranch. WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING TO HAPPEN TO YOU IN THIS BUSINESS/AT THE RANCH? Not being all that funny but definitely amusing is learning everyone’s names. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? In my free time I mostly spend time home. I’m raising my 16-year-old daughter whose main residence is with me. Also, I like to consider myself a self-proclaimed restauranteur, so I spend two to three nights a month dining out at newly discovered restaurants. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO SUCCEED? God first, then my kids, and my own continuing pursuit of wanting to be happy. ARE YOU A CAT OR DOG PERSON, AND WHY? Neither, because I am raising two daughters and the days of instilling, teaching, feeding, etc., have been enough to last a lifetime. AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? As a child growing up, I pretty much wanted to be what I have been doing now well over two decades, and that’s anything and everything dealing with food.

28 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL? My favorite meal is grilled ribeye or NY Strip (medium), topped with jumbo shrimp and crab that has been sautéed in a lemon, shallot, butter and wine cream sauce, a twice baked potato and creamed spinach. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GENRE OF MUSIC? Although I do enjoy a vast array of music, R&B is my favorite. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON, AND WHY? Fall/Winter: The reason would be none other than what one can see on the drive to Cordillera Ranch. WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? Although I’ve traveled mildly abroad, I definitely want to experience the Brazilian Mardi Gras/Carnival. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD ABOUT YOURSELF? I am known to cut a rug, and I enjoy doing so!

THE

DECKER FAMILY ²

BUILDING A BEAUTIFUL LIFE IN CORDILLERA RANCH By Kimberly A. Suta :: Photography by David Teran

For Lauren and Chance Decker, along with their two adorable children, it seems like ending up at Cordillera Ranch was always in the cards. You might even call it fate. “I always knew we’d end up in the Hill Country. During COVID, we realized life was too short, and our kids were growing up Houstonians, but we wanted to raise them in the Hill Country,” explained Chance. “We fell in love with Boerne and Cordillera, and it has been a fantastic decision.” Chance was born and raised in Hondo, Texas and still has a ranch in the area that has been in the family since 1840. He and his cousins run a quail hunting business on the ranch and being closer, only an hour away from their home in Cordillera, enables Chance to more easily care for the place. “We wouldn’t trade living here for anything. It’s why we moved here,” said Lauren, who was born in Midland, Texas but grew up mostly in Katy. She went to the University of Texas to be a teacher then moved back to Houston for work. She soon realized teaching wasn’t her path and so she switched to IT sales. She’s now a Regional Territory Manager for the Unstructured Data Division at Dell Technologies, working with companies to address the growing needs of storing, managing and protecting unstructured data. As she works with a lot of large healthcare institutions, the high-volume storage solutions she supports, indirectly, affects people’s lives.

“I taught ninth grade geography before I switched. I was 22 years old, and I just felt like I didn’t have enough real-world experience under my belt at the time,” recalled Lauren. “It absolutely was the right choice to switch career paths. I love my job at Dell and how every day is different, depending on my customers’ needs. Getting to work with some of the top medical institutions in Texas, delivering solutions I believe in, is something I enjoy.” It was in Houston, while Chance was in his first year of law school at the University of Houston, where the two met through a mutual friend. “We met at a bowling alley. It was a black-tie birthday party at an old bowling alley in Bellaire. Not a nice place but it was kind of fun to get dressed up,” shared Lauren. Chance confided, “When I walked in and saw her, I thought, ‘Yup, she’s the one. I’m done.’” Although Chance was instantly smitten, unfortunately Lauren already had a boyfriend. It took three years of patience and perseverance on Chance’s part, until Valentine’s Day, 2009. “A big group of single friends decided to meet up for brunch. We played pool then decided to go to dinner, then ended the night dancing, and we had our first kiss,” said Lauren, warmly. “Then I left my business card in his car because he didn’t ask for my number.” “Because she made me wait three years,” Chance laughed. “I couldn’t seem too eager. Plus, I knew I could get her number from her roommate.” Cupid’s arrow struck straight and true this time, however, and the two were engaged by Christmas. They now have a 10-year-old boy, Wells Knight, and a 7-year-old girl, Elliott Blair. Cordillera seemed like the natural choice when they finally decided to leave Houston as Lauren’s parents and aunt and uncle already lived in the community, and of course, the Hondo ranch was much closer. They moved into a rental in the neighborhood in 2021 while their house was being built, and finally moved into their own brand-new home last April. Chance now works as a construction and commercial litigator for the Cokinos Young Law Firm, which is based in

Houston but has an office and major presence in San Antonio. “I primarily represent construction companies and design professionals like architects and engineers in commercial construction defect disputes,” said Chance. Reading and writing have always been Chance’s natural academic skill set, so a career in the law was the perfect fit for him. “I enjoy the competitive part of being a trial lawyer. There are very few careers where you basically have a competition and there’s a winner and a loser, and that excitement and adrenaline is what I love about practicing law,” he elaborated. So, what does this young, vivacious couple do in their free time? “Kids and work, that’s all,” said Lauren. “I do enjoy running in the neighborhood. It’s calming and the views of the hills never get old, no matter which path I take. Sometimes I curse the hills, but in the long run, pun intended, they’re worth it.” But most of the time, the family is shuffling back-and-forth between the kids’ activities, whether it be baseball, dance, gymnastics, football or basketball. If you have kids around this age, you probably sympathize. Thankfully, last summer Chance and Lauren were able to get away to Scotland for a 10-day holiday, traveling to five different cities by car, playing golf at St. Andrews and, admittedly, drinking plenty of Scotch. Still, they wouldn’t want their busy lives any other way, and the icing on the cake is that now family is close-by. This past holiday they enjoyed some family time at the Boerne Christmas Parade for the third year in a row. “It’s an exciting time, seeing joy on everyone’s faces. There are also birthdays around this time, so we get to enjoy spending that time with everyone,” said Lauren. During the summers, the kids love swimming at their aunt and uncle’s pool, who live across the golf course, and the whole family takes advantage of the Clubhouse, from swim parties to the Kids’ Club and, of course, dinner when time’s too short to cook. “Right now, it’s the turkey pot pie for Elliott and sliders for Wells, although they both equally love the sliders and sweet potato fries. And Jeff and Jerrek make a mean milkshake,” said Lauren. “We love walking into the Clubhouse and immediately see 20 different people that we know,” said Lauren. “I like the Cordillera community because we all kind of look out for one another. I feel comfortable allowing the kids to introduce themselves to any person in the neighborhood and show respect. I feel like they’re get-

ting to learn things that they weren’t when we lived in Houston.” Time permitting, Chance likes to go hunting in South Texas, and sometimes brings Wells, who enjoys some one-on-one time with his dad. “I’m crazy about big South Texas white tail deer,” said Chance. “I think it’s therapeutic to be outdoors. When you’re sitting in the deer blind, you’re not just sitting there by yourself, you’re sitting with your dad who took you as a kid, or your grandfather or grandmother who loved hunting and the outdoors as well. You’re tapping into a part of the human psyche that’s evolved over 200,000 years. It’s just good for you to be in nature.” According to Lauren, Chance likes to hunt any kind of game, and Chance shared that he’s working on his skills as a wild game chef. He’s got plans to make a routeed duck Cajun dish, a hyper-local recipe popular in the south Lafourche parish in Louisiana, this Christmas. Maybe if you get to know the Deckers, you’ll get invited over for one of their amazing dinners. So, keep your eye out for the Deckers at the Clubhouse for a chance to make some amazing new and hopefully lifelong friends!

We are

moving the Cordillera Cup — the annual battle between Team Hill and Team Northington — back to the fall. In addition, we are adding a Couples Championship — it will be a one-day best ball competition for all our competitive couples at the Club. Last year, we made a change to our Match Play Championship by conducting it over three consecutive days. That structure will remain in 2024, and then in 2025 and 2026, it will be conducted over a three-month period where players will schedule the matches on their own. Every two years, it will alternate between the two structures. Happy New Year, and I’ll see you on the course! Corey Roberson is the Director of Golf at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. Are you dying to amp up your golf game in preparation for the gorgeous Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Cordillera? Thank goodness for modern tech, because now you can install a professional golf simulator and work on your swing from the comfort of your own home. That 30-minute lunch break will never feel more productive! If you have an artificial green in your backyard, you might think you’re already set, but you’d be wrong, according to Corey Roberson, the Director of Golf at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. “Building an artificial green is great for your short game and putting, but having a full swing game in-house is a nice addition. They’re two completely different types of products. With the in-home simulator, you can play a full round of golf, from hitting a tee shot on number one to hitting the last putt on 18,” explained Corey.

40 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

The benefits of a home golf simulator are indeed manifold. “The beauty is that even though you may live in Boerne, Texas, you can play the St. Andrews Links in Scotland anytime you want with a simulator,” he added. Not only is it a fun, convenient and relaxing getaway from your usual round of golf, but with it you can tee it up with your group of golf buddies from anywhere in the world. “Much like having a bowling lane, pool table or shuffle board [in your home], golf

simulators bring the fun factor to a whole new level, but I would say simulators are for all types of players looking to better their game — amateurs and professionals,” said Keith Norman, Co-owner and President of Business Development for Paul Allen Custom Homes. Still, playing isn’t the only reason to invest in a home golf simulator. Using it to practice and significantly improve your swing can turn this into your new secret weapon. The science behind the tracking devices, cameras and monitors is extraordinary, and measures every intricate detail that happens with the golf ball, from the spin axis to the speed with which it jettisons off your club. To be clear, with a golf simulator, you are actually swinging real clubs and hitting a real golf ball into a screen. “It’s just like going to the range

except the difference is you get all of the ball and club data on every shot. It can tell a player if they came four-and-ahalf degrees from the inside and the face was two-and-a-half degrees open to that, which is why the ball went high right,” explained Corey. If you’ve been to the Clubhouse, then you’ve probably already seen or used the Trackman outdoor golf simulator. Although there are several choices available, this is the brand that Corey highly recommends. However, you can anticipate a hearty price tag to go with it. Plan to spend about $50k with Trackman. If you’re looking for something more affordable, SkyTrak SIG10 has been recommended as a great package for under $10k, and is an all-inclusive set-up feasible for both amateurs and pros. It comes with a state-of-the-art launch monitor device, dual doppler radar system and software that accurately tracks ball and club data, along with a simulator studio. If you’re wanting to go all-in for a top-of-the-line simulator, look no further than the HD Golf Simulator Ultimate Entertainment package. The steep $70k price tag comes with everything you can imagine, from a giant flat screen monitor to surround sound and rear stereoscopic cameras. “There are a ton of options out there. It really comes down to how much space you have and what type of experience you want. I recommend Trackman because they offer full in-home simulator sales and installation,” said Corey. According to Lauren Iler, Director of Client Relations at Todd Glowka Builder, Inc., they’ve been seeing home golf simulators

42 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

trending for the past seven to eight years. “We have one installed in a completed home and one in a job under construction right now,” she noted. Corey noticed things shifted during the pandemic. “Simulators have been around a long time, but when COVID hit, that really blew up the market. Interestingly, it’s also about the time when the tech got more affordable. They used to cost $100k to build in-home.” Keith Norman agreed, “The idea was a trend, it seemed, during the pandemic because we do not get the request that often anymore. However, the simulators we have installed are typically incorporated into some kind of game room area. The simulators are brilliant for practice, but also have an inherent entertainment factor!”

PREPARE TO PLAY Although, you can certainly install in your current home, if you’re planning on a new build, it’s ideal to do your research or get a consultation before the design phase, as it could affect the building requirements. “What I hear from home builders is the more info they have on the product, the easier it is for them to create something the homeowner’s going to love,” said Corey. “You want to make sure the ceiling’s high enough and there’s enough depth and width in the room. Give them a chance to tailor the room to your needs as opposed to shoe-horning it into a room that’s a foot too narrow.”

Tricia Lloyd with Garner Homes agrees, adding, “When these things are not taken into consideration during the design phase, it is hard to find a place for one unless you want to use your garage space.” Keith confirmed, “All simulators come with specifications for the install — size of the space and distance from the walls, for example. There is minimal electrical needed. The respective companies always have field support to ensure quality installation.”

Gabriel Garcia, President of Pasadera Builders, is currently building three homes in Cordillera Ranch that will include golf simulators. He added, “The key to being able to install a golf simulator correctly is room size — I mean volume. It’s not enough to just have a room with the square footage. Ceiling height is very important in order for the sensor to work accurately. A typical building detail that gives Pasadera an advantage to building a golf simulator is the fact that we use double sole plates to allow for a finish floor above the top of the slab. This is critical to allow for the golf flooring system to be 2-3/8” above the top of concrete. Our floors, whether they be wood, tile or carpet are 2-3/8” above top of concrete. The golf simulator floor system uses a substrate under the turf to allow for putting holes and slope undulation. Our building methods and this floor system create a seamless floor elevation that does not look like an afterthought.” If it’s starting to sound a bit too complex, don’t worry. Corey offers some final advice. “There are just so many options out there, so a big part of it is doing the research and, of course, speaking to your local golf professional … which is me!” he said. Just another perk of living in Cordillera Ranch!

AGRONOMY

TIME WELL SPENT By Stu Rowland, Director of Agronomy

Finishing seasons are always a relief, especially the tough ones. With every season, filled with challenges or not, we take intentional time to reflect and perhaps pivot a little as we move into the next one. The record-breaking summer heat and drought brought on many challenges as we watched the Guadalupe stop flowing, had long stretches of 100+ degree days, and reduced or eliminated irrigation resulting in summer dormancy of turf. Yet, with all of this, one thing remained amazing; the team out sweating the conditions to keep us headed in the right direction. Now that we’ve seen a little rain, and the river is flowing again, the Agronomy team is breathing easier and excited to be out executing our fall/winter plans to make the next season great. It was a rather quick transition to fall as we deployed our agronomic practices of “winter-izing” the course, aerifying the greens, and beginning several of our planned projects. As mentioned, with the challenging summer, we had a few pivots leading into fall: recovering several areas that succumbed to the summer heat with sod, pushing as much Zoysia and Bermuda recovery before winter dormancy and, of course, just enjoying some rainfall. Now as winter is upon us, this is where we are excited to execute on our “off season” projects. In the last two years, we have recovered all our landscaped areas around the course that provide framing of holes and aesthetics to the tee and green

44 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

areas. Now we are excited to add some color! As is always the challenge in Texas, we are striving to plant that which won’t be consumed overnight by our Cordillera deer. Honestly, that’s a good thing. The deer keep us honest to plant things that keep us Texas. That is, keeping a plant palette that is native to us and provides a consistent aesthetic to the course and grounds. The winter season also includes preparing our Pure Distinction bentgrass greens for the spring season and fortifying it for the subsequent summer. We’ve seen tremendous results from the previous summer seasons and, with each year, our greens become stronger and stronger. Conducting several soil nutrient and performance tests following this past summer, we know exactly what is needed to make our greens even better for the next season. We look forward to the course waking up again in March and seeing you, your families and your guests enjoying the course and the fruits of our team’s work this winter. We truly hope everyone had a blessed Holiday season! See you on the course! Stu Rowland is the Director of Agronomy at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. PICKLEBALL AND PROSECCO TO COLLECT TOYS

By Joe De Luna, Director of Tennis and Pickleball In conjunction with Cordillera Cares’ effort to support the Kendall County Sheriff’s Foundation Blue Santa program, the Tennis and Pickleball Club hosted Pickleball and Prosecco. More than 30 members joined together to donate over 100 toys for the drive and participate in an open play pickleball event. After play, the members enjoyed lunch on the back patio of the Main Clubhouse.

The Blue Santa Toy Drive was established to provide families in need with assistance in providing their children with Christmas gifts that they would not otherwise receive. It is an amazing program that has helped many families during the holidays and continues to grow each year. We would like thank all of the Cordillera Ranch members who donated in 2023!

WELLNESS

LETTING GO TO MOVE FORWARD

TIPS FOR DECOMPRESSING AFTER THE HOLIDAYS By Tamra Christiansen, Director of Fitness and Wellness

“Did I get everyone on my list a gift? Did I miss anyone? Will they like it?” “When my in-laws come over, we have to do this, this and this … my mother in-law doesn’t like the décor in my house and why does she have to say anything about it in the first place?” In this article, I will be talking about six ways to de-stress after the holiday mess.

1. DEEP BREATHING Take a deep breath in. Now, slowly breathe out a sigh of relief. Do that again. And one more time, really feeling the air expand your entire rib cage like a balloon and, as you release the air, allowing your ribs to deflate. How do you feel? More relaxed, perhaps lighter? Breathing is an accessible tool readily available to you anytime you need it. Breathing allows for muscle relaxation, is proven to reduce anxiety and stress instantly, lowers blood pressure, activates your parasympathetic system (rest and digest system) and has many other benefits. Something so simple as breathing allows us to feel calmer, more connected with ourselves and less stressed. There are so many breathing patterns and apps out there to assist with methods of breathing. Whether it is the Box breathing pattern, the 4-7-8 pattern or the 3-6-9 breathwork pattern, you will feel better for it.

2. LET THAT STUFF GO! Life is enjoyable and fun. In the same breath, (pun intended!), it can be stressful and messy. Appreciate — really appreciate — the good that happens in your life. Don’t waste time and energy thinking you can control the uncontrollable. There are things you have in your control verses, well, the opposite. Think of the Serenity Prayer. This is also the second tip for stress relief. Once you realize what “is what it is,” and what is within your control, you automatically have a proverbial sigh of relief. We don’t have to carry so much. We put so much pressure on ourselves and sometimes it is because we refuse to let go of control. Yes, we like things done a certain way. Asking for help, even when it means things will be

50 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

done differently than what you like, takes some of the pressure off of you. We must ask ourselves the hard question: do I try to do everything by myself because of pride or ego? Including others in chores, tasks, etc., allows others to give you the gift of their time, creates inclusivity and relieves you of undue burdens. Remember to ask others how they deal with stress and share your strategies. You might learn something new and help someone else, which cultivates kindness.

3. STRRRRRRRRETCH AND MOVE! Start when you first wake up and stretch your entire body by extending your arms up or out, and your legs as well. Move your hands and feet in small circles, both giving your body subtle ways to wake up and injecting your joints with synovial fluid: the “tin man’s oil can.” Stretching gives the body mobility, blood flow and general healthy movement. It has been said that stretching is one of the top ways to longevity because it keeps us moving well. Moving well allows us to move more and we feel good about it. This is another readily available tool you always have with you. Flexibility is part of the workout, so remember to stretch afterwards. Going for a walk has so many benefits, such as relaxing the mind in nature, getting the blood flowing, helping your mind sort out the issue at hand and so many more.

4. QUALITY, AND ALSO QUANTITY SLEEP A good night’s rest allows the body to heal on a cellular level. Sleeping well means having a clear mind for the next day. Getting six but preferably eight hours of sleep is vital to your mental, physical and emotional health. It lowers the risk of many diseases, some being diabetes and heart disease. Here is a simple formula for getting true rest: 10, 3, 2, 1, 0 - Ten hours before bed: reduce caffeine consumption. Caffeine stays in the system seven hours! - Three hours before bed: no food or alcohol. Alcohol might make you feel sleepy, but it is sugar, so it keeps the mind from resting well. - Two hours before bed: no work or worry. Settling into your bedtime routine is vital to quality sleep. Work wakes the mind all over again and makes resting feel impossible. The things that you need to tackle tomorrow will be there … tomorrow. Take care of yourself so you can effectively handle your day. - One hour before bed: no screen time. The light and the

pixels keep your mind and body active and awake. This hour is a great time to start dimming the lights, take a relaxing bath or shower, reflect and journal, do a short and calming stretch session (even if in bed) and meditate. Try it for a week and let me know how it works for you! - Zero: how many times you hit snooze in the morning. REM is the dream stage of sleep — a deep part of our rest. Hitting snooze disrupts this pattern over and over, making us feel groggy and foggy through the day. Moving the phone or alarm clock away from your reach helps you get up and get on with a good day.

5. JOURNALING Writing your thoughts down has been proven effective for relieving anxiety and stress. It allows you to release what your thoughts are holding captive. Pen to paper is physically and emotionally releasing, but if using a computer or phone to journal works better, use it. Writing down the things that stress you helps release the mind so you can focus on the things that matter. Stress thoughts will wreak havoc on your focus and sleep if they are left on replay all day, every day. Journaling gives you a chance to reflect on what happened during your day or week.

There is science behind reflecting. It gives your mind the chance to look back on what you did, what you can do better and how much you appreciate things. Which brings me to number 6 ….

6. BEING GRATEFUL Having gratitude is a proven defense against grumbling and complaining. Be thankful for the smallest of miracles in your life as well as the big wins. It is easy to get into the habit of complaining. Start with a 5-minute habit of reversing the complaints and finding a blessing to replace it with. Complaining only ages us and brings the immune system down. Yes, I agree that there are so many things to dislike and ways voice those feelings. In the same breath, reread the first tip (wink) — practicing gratitude is proven to fight depressive feelings. Life is too short to miss out on the good in your life and in YOU as a person. Get out there into 2024 and show this year who is boss! Take a deep breath as you stretch your arms in a gratitude-filled gaze at the beautiful blue Cordillera skies! HAPPY

taste noun /tãst/

:the sensation of flavor perceived in the mouth and throat on contact with a substance.

NEW YEAR! By Jeffrey M. Cohen, CMS, Wine Specialist

In this edition of Taste, I wanted to introduce to you a great new wine that was brought on at the end of the year. In November, I had the great opportunity to taste wines from a very boutique portfolio called ¿Por Que No?. We tasted through his wine bag and there were a few that really stood out. I found this one wine to soar above the others. It also happens to be made from a grape that I had never heard of. I’ll get to that in a moment. The vintner of the wine is Baldovar 923 and the wine is Cañada Paris. The grape used is Merseguera.

Merseguera is a little-known white wine grape variety grown along the southeastern coast of Spain. Plantings are relatively few, and centered on the vineyards of Valencia, Alicante and Jumilla. Merseguera is rarely used to make single-variety wines, as it lacks the varietal character and is best used in blends. The simple fact is that Merseguera is valued for its viticultural qualities rather than its enological qualities; the wines may be bland and lacking in acidity but the variety is very tolerant of warm, dry climates. It is able to grow efficiently in poor soils and still produce substantial yields. There are, of course, a few exceptions to this, and I’m happy to say WE HAVE IT AT THE CLUB! The 2019 is a beautifully expressive wine that showcases the unique terroir of the Valencia Mountains. On the nose, it presents a delightful bouquet of white flowers, green apple and citrus zest, accompanied by subtle hints of almond and fresh herbs. As you take your first sip, the wine’s vibrant acidity and complex minerality come to the forefront, revealing layers of stone fruit, grapefruit and wet stone. The wine’s medium body is complemented by a silky texture, which lingers on the palate alongside notes of white peach and a touch of salinity. The finish is long and refreshing, leaving a lasting impression of both elegance and balance. Some general pairings would be white fish, such as sea bass and halibut. Fresh seafood, including oysters, clams and shrimp will also be quite harmonious. It truly is versatile and would work with Greek salads, burrata and caprese. Others might enjoy this with pescatarian dishes like sushi, or vegan meals like roasted and grilled vegetables. I sure hope that you will come in and give this a try. I was certainly surprised at how good it was. It is Bin #491 on the wine list, or you can always just call me over to your table. From my family to yours, have a Happy and Healthy New Year! SUMMER BACKPACKING FISHING ADVENTURE TRIPS

&

During the summer of 2024, we are organizing two backcountry fishing trips that both offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The first trip is to the Sierra Nevada of California to fish for golden, brown and rainbow trout. The second is a trip to the high Rocky Mountains in Colorado where we’ll fish for brown trout and rainbow trout in the alpine streams.

BACKPACKING THE HIGH SIERRA June 24-29, 2024 The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, also known as the Range of Light by naturalist John Muir, runs north to south for 400 miles and 70 miles east to west. There are three National Parks within its boundaries, Yosemite in the north and Sequoia and Kings Canyon in the south. The Sierra is also home to Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, as well as twenty National Wilderness Areas and two National Monuments.

56 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

By Shane Reynolds, Outdoor Recreation Director and Outfitter

One of the special things about working at Cordillera Ranch is getting to travel with our Club members and introduce them to some of the great outdoor recreation opportunities in this wonderful country of ours. When a few members asked me about doing something special this summer, I spoke to them about visiting the high country of the Sierra Nevada. For the avid fly fisherman, a trip into the high country is not generally what comes to mind. But I can assure anyone who ever questions whether it’s worth the work to get there, the answer is absolutely yes! It’s not an easy task by any means. For us Texans who live at or near sea level, a trip to the high country means preparing one’s self for both a mental and physically demanding trip. Our destination is Cottonwood Lakes Basin. Cottonwood Lakes, located at the southern tip of the John Muir Wilderness, are home to California’s state fish, the golden trout. Cottonwood Lakes Basin has many pristine lakes and creeks located between Mount Langley and Cirque Peak. Other lakes in the area that we may choose to fish are Muir Lake, South Fork Lakes, Cirque,

Sierra Nevada Mountain Range

Long and High Lakes. From our basecamp in the Cottonwood Lakes Basin, we’ll explore the rugged alpine setting in search of trout with fly rods in hand. The primary trout found in these waters are the California golden trout and native brook trout. Occasionally we’ll hook a brown trout and there are a few types of hybrids. One of my favorite fly fishing quotes is from Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and he states, “It’s not about catching the fish; it’s about the fish catching you.” This trip is sure to be a lasting memory for all who venture into the Sierra Nevada with us!

FLY FISHING COLORADO'S BACKCOUNTRY July 15-20, 2024 Colorado’s 2,000 high lakes are the remnants of our last glacial episode that ended about 12,000 years ago. These lakes are located primarily along the crest of the Continental Divide, in the Flat Tops of northwest Colorado and in the Sangre de Cristo Range of southern Colorado. Elevations at most lakes are between 9,000 and 12,500 feet. Ninety percent are less than 20 acres in size, and three-quarters are less than 30 feet deep, making them easily fishable with a fly rod. Most can be fished from shore for at least part of the open water season. Anglers will be pleased to know that fishing high lakes has many similarities to fishing lower elevation streams and rivers. However, there are also many differences. Fish respond to weather, water conditions and insect life similarly in both types of water. In rivers and streams, the water is moving and the fish are primarily stationary, holding in feeding lanes. However, in lakes, the water is stationary and the fish are constantly moving. Understanding the movement of trout is the key to

Colorado High Lakes

successfully fishing high-mountain lakes. Trout in high lakes move in response to water temperature, insect hatches, light intensity and cover. Summer brings insect activity to the high lakes and the opportunity to match the hatch. Along with temperature and insect hatches, trout in high lakes move in response to light intensity and cover. Trout move into the shallows when light is low at dawn or dusk. On cloudy days, trout are often more active and move closer to shore. However, on bright sunny days, trout often move into the deeper water to filter the bright light. Trout also move to shore under the temporary cover of a lake surface that is rippled by a stiff breeze. The broken surface diffracts light and makes trout less wary. As our group prepares for this summer adventure, there are several things we will do to ensure all are prepared and have the right expectations on what to look forward to. The logistics for this trip includes a flight from San Antonio to Denver. Once in Denver, we’ll load our gear into a rental van and head west into the Rockies, making three stops along the way. One stop is for groceries, which will include backpacking gourmet meals made from fresh ingredients. As a backcountry guide for the past 30 years, I have learned that there are fewer things more enjoyable than a great meal at the end of a long day in the mountains. For more information on both of these trips, see the Club Calendar on the Club website. Shane Reynolds is the Outdoor Recreation Director & Outfitter at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. The Georg House is the perfect space to host small business meetings, featuring an open concept space, a smart TV for casting presentations and a beautiful patio overlooking Hole #3. When you need a place to break, Club activities and our newly renovated Private Dining Room and Patio with our Celebratory Green is sure to blow your guests away.

SLEEPOVER TEE PEE PARTIES Imagine your Little Rancher’s excitement when walking into a completely decorated Slumber Party! All you have to do is tell us your theme, pick out your menu and cake, and select your activities, and we handle the rest. Our adorable tee pee set-ups are always a favorite, and activities can include horseback riding, fishing, swimming, a fun match of pickleball or a round of disk golf. Whether it’s a birthday party, summer party or a just-because party, your kids will love it!

FAMILY GETAWAY The Lodges were made for families of all sizes to have a memorable getaway or accommodate overnight guests. Our Elmax Deluxe Suites are perfect for smaller families, with a king-sized bed and a small living room that will fit up to three tee pees for the kids. The Georg House is great for larger family gatherings, with a total of four Deluxe Rooms, a common space and a dining table that will seat up to eight. Either way, The Lodges provide a cozy environment for all ages.

WEDDING PARTIES The Lodges provide a beautiful, intimate space for your bridal party. The Elmax offers privacy with individual units, while The Georg House keeps your loved ones together with four individual units surrounding a common area. Bride and Groom packages make your celebration even more special.

PRIVATE CELEBRATIONS AT THE GEORG The Georg House is the ideal venue when you want to host a home party, just not in your house. Truly indulge your guests with our expert party planning and elevated meals, and leave the clean-up to us!

STAY-CATION Sometimes you just need to get away for a little “Me Time.” We can coordinate a full menu of Spa services from our talented massage therapists and esthetician, create a mimosa bar and brunch for a group of ladies, or pre-stock your room with any goodies your desire. After a weekend out here, you can return to the real world fully rejuvenated.

SUMMER CAMPS AT THE CLUBS OF CORDILLERA RANCH Turn summer camp into a family vacation! Throughout summer, we offer a variety of camps for kids, ages 4 and up. Your personal concierge can make sure your stay is themed to your little one’s camp, and even coordinate activities for your own “Adult Camp.” It will be a summer to always remember!

The purpose of our stay was to host a few members of our corporate executive team and plan for the upcoming fiscal year. Everyone had their own private king room with ensuite bathrooms. The common area was perfect for lounging and visiting with the added bonus of the back patio overlooking the #3 fairway. It was the perfect setting for relaxing and sharing laughs and ideas. The Cordillera Team made us all feel welcome with personalized welcome cards in each of our rooms. The event was a huge success and I already have multiple requests for the next event to be hosted by our incredible Cordillera Team. - Cris Blevins I have a group of 16 friends from all over the country who, for close to 30 years, have had an annual buddy golf trip. We have traveled to many of the best golf resorts and private golf clubs around the world. We began taking turns hosting at our private clubs and, most recently, Cordillera Ranch. The Club equaled or bettered all of our previous golf experiences. From the management of our tournament to the catering at my home, everything was top notch. I asked my group for feedback on the accommodations at The Lodges. They said they were amongst the best our group has ever experienced. The Georg was perfect for our group gatherings, and The Elmax provided amazing suites. The convenience of being adjacent to the Club, with everyone having their own golf cart, allowed everyone to enjoy breakfast and the Club facilities before our rounds. I want to thank you and the entire staff for making all of my guests feel such great Texas hospitality. - Jeff Smith

BOERNE YOUNG LIFE

CONTINUES TO INSPIRE STUDENTS By Kimberly Suta, with Josh Bradshaw :: Photo courtesy of Boerne Young Life

Young life is a non-denominational, faith-based nonprofit

YOUNG LIFE MAKES A DIFFERENCE

organization that has been making a huge impact across

As leaders show up to high school sports practices and games, serve at school events like dances and parades, and help on campus, they earn the right to be heard with students and are often asked to speak into the lives of students. They host a Monday night event called Club — a party with a purpose where students also hear the Gospel, and weekly Bible studies for students, which they call Campaigners. Last year, Boerne High School played in the 4A Football State Championship game. It was a really fun experience for the Boerne High Young Life leaders, as 95 percent of that team were involved with Campaigners. “The Athletic Director of Boerne ISD thanked us and said, ‘Young Life’s influence in these students’ lives has helped play a part here,’” remembered Josh. “What we do expands into other aspects of these students’ lives, not just their faith. Deep relationships with caring adults help them become more well-rounded individuals.” Josh recalled one student whose dad passed away when he was young. When he reached high school, he connected with a Young Life leader and that relationship has been very formative. “He connected with one of our leaders and has been going on weekend and week-long camp trips with us since his freshman year. Kids can also give a month of their summer to serve at a Young Life camp property. This student’s life has completely changed. Now, as he’s thinking about where he wants to go to

the world since 1941. It has existed in Boerne since 1995 and serves the Boerne ISD high schools and middle schools, as well as Geneva. They also do great work with the teen moms in this community. Josh Bradshaw is Regional Initiatives Coordinator for the South Texas Region and has been with Young Life for nine years. “I actually failed out of high school in London, England. A lot of that was because of depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse. I think if I’d had a Young Life leader encouraging me, I genuinely think my life could have looked a lot different,” shared Josh. While the core mission of Young Life is to introduce adolescents to Jesus and help them grow in their faith, there are other significant benefits for students to connect with a Young Life leader. Josh pointed out some interesting statistics. In the U.S., one in four students drops out of school, and those who drop out are more likely to be unemployed. However, students who meet regularly with a mentor are 52 percent less likely to skip school, 46 percent are less likely to start using illegal drugs, 37 percent less likely to drop a class and 76 percent of these kids will aspire to enroll in and graduate from college.

college, he is prioritizing somewhere that has a good Young Life community,” said Josh. COVID was especially challenging for kids. According to Josh, Gen Z students are considered the loneliest generation, with 60 percent describing themselves as very isolated. “Having a Young Life leader prevents that — especially coming out of COVID. They bring about community in ways students might not otherwise get to experience stuff,” said Josh. “I think Boerne, in a lot of ways, is doing pretty well as a community. There’s so many here that want the best for the students, not just their own kids. It really does take a village.”

BEYOND BOERNE Josh’s work in the South Texas Region goes as far north as Kerrville, as east as Victoria and all the way down to the Valley, but Young Life’s efforts extend even further in Texas. Their La Frontera border initiative includes towns along the border, like Big Bend and El Paso. “The Young Life Area Director has the impossible job. They’re tasked with being a missionary in their area, earning the right to be heard with high school student, and earning the trust and respect of local businesses and donors, among other things,” noted Josh. Towns in the South Texas Region like Boerne are able to raise 100 percent of their budget from their local community every year. A lot of the work Young Life is doing on the border

BOERNE YOUNG LIFE STATS In Boerne we know 800 kids by name. 150+ at club each week 150+ involved in campaigners each week 200+ at summer camp 100+ at weekend camps 50+ volunteer leaders in Boerne with the La Frontera initiative requires funding outside of their local ministry area. As Young Life continues to grow its network across South Texas, they hope to raise $6 million over the next five years.

PAUL ALLEN CUSTOM HOMES

MODERN

MEETS NATURE

Paul Allen Custom Homes, a Cordillera Ranch Preferred Builder, has crafted luxury homes in the Texas Hill Country since 1984. With four decades of experience, it goes without saying that they know the landscape of the Ranch and how to best capitalize on its beauty with their stunning home designs. “We’ll know the families that build with us forever,” said Co-owner and President of Business Development, Keith Norman. “Once the build is complete, they are part of our family, and they can

call us for anything.” With a focus on white glove-level service, the Paul Allen team guides clients through every phase of the home-building process, from the first consultation and finishing selections to construction and move-in day. For most, the journey begins at the group’s stunning Highpoint Model Home, beautifully positioned on a cliffside and offering more than 20 miles of uninterrupted panoramic views of Hill Country scenery, with direct sightlines of the Twin Sisters in Blanco County.

Organic Modern style features clean lines alongside natural materials like cut limestone, wood and steel — all coming together to honor the landscape and lifestyle of Cordillera Ranch. By Drew Henry :: Photography by Lauren Keller

“Everyone is absolutely blown away when they visit the home for the first time,” continued Keith. “Highpoint is private and tucked away, and it instantly draws you in with its sleek lines, cut limestone facade and wood accents when you make your way up the approach. Once inside, folks are captivated by the details and how well they tie into the exterior — from the pecan wood flooring to soaring 24-foot ceilings, and right down to the trim work finish. It’s the best of the best quality you can imagine. Of

course, the view over the Hill Country takes center stage. You just can’t beat it!” The Highpoint Model Home features 6,044 square feet of living space, including five bedrooms, five bathrooms, an open-concept kitchen with an adjoining caterer’s kitchen, two bars, a game room, two covered patios, an outdoor party kitchen, and pool/spa combination — all positioned to take full advantage of the view. If the in-home comforts weren’t

enough, the property is conveniently located close to The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch amenities, including the Clubhouse, golf course and tennis courts, that speak to the community’s active lifestyle, as well as the many parks, rivers, creeks and preserved natural areas on the Ranch. “We designed this home with the landscape and lifestyle of Cordillera Ranch in mind,” added Keith. It’s clear to see that the view and landscape were carefully considered and reflected in the home’s Organic Modern design. Owner and President Paul Allen explained, “The Organic Modern style uses clean lines alongside natural materials like cut limestone, wood and steel. Combining the two creates a warm, welcoming feel that ties into the beautiful landscape without competing with it. One thing everyone compliments on this home is how beautifully it flows, indoors and out.” Upon the first approach, visitors will notice the modern lines of the exterior highlighted with cut limestone, a black finished wood-clad window package and durable engineered wood that ties the contemporary structure back to nature. Opening the 10-foot-tall pivot glass door reveals a striking interior outfitted with cutting-edge finishes. “We always work to incorporate the latest and greatest in our homes,” said Keith. “In the entry, you’ll see sleek and modern LED linear strip lighting accenting the ceiling in a bold diamond pattern. This element draws you into the great room, which features a suspended drop ceiling with cove lighting. It’s a major wow factor that also makes the home feel warmer and cozier. The ambient light provides just the right glow for a relaxed movie night in.” Visitors will also notice a stunning dual-sided fireplace finished in large-format, durable porcelain tiles and floating hearths, also illuminated by LEDs. “For the kitchen design, we decided to flip the traditional orientation to take better advantage of the view,” explained Keith. “When you step in, the first thing you will see is a wall of windows perfectly framing the Hill Country.

It’s incredible to see the 20-mile view from the kitchen sink!” The state-of-the-art kitchen also features dual-tone white oak and stained Alder cabinets with custom storage options for spices and kitchen tools, waterfall-edge quartz cabinets, and a Sub-Zero®, Wolf®, and Cove® appliance package complete with a full-height Sub-Zero wine fridge. If you like to entertain, you can do so in style with an adjoining caterer’s kitchen providing extra cabinet and prep space. “We’ve hosted a few parties here, and the caterer’s kitchen has proven very useful,” added Paul. Of course, the team had to design an equally impressive and livable outdoor space to fully capitalize on the home’s views. Two covered back patios surround the infinity edge pool, providing separate areas for lounging and dining. Each is accented with wood plank ceilings and custom steel columns in a crossbeam design. The dining patio is adjacent to the fully equipped party kitchen and accesses the game room. A 22-foot cupula over the dining table adds drama, interest and illumination to dinners spent al fresco. Among all the luxury finishes of the Highpoint Home, the Paul Allen team agrees that one of the best spots is a tucked-away plateau on the sprawling acreage. Outfitted with patio seating, it’s the perfect place to enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine. After all, it’s all about the view!

POA

NEW RECREATION AMENITIES AT CORDILLERA RANCH

By Shane Reynolds, Outdoor Recreation Director and Outfitter, and Kevin Koether, POA General Manager

DISC GOLF COURSE AT SWEDE CREEK The Cordillera Ranch Disc Golf Course is a 9-hole course nestled within the beautiful river park along Swede Creek. There is a wide range of tree-lined fairways, a meandering creek bed, water hazards, rock outcroppings and terrain that offers some challenging shots. The course is designed for beginners and advanced players. Features include top-of-the-line disc golf baskets, natural grass tee pads and online scorecards to use. Please practice caution while playing the course; it’s a natural Hill Country park setting and wildlife call the park home.

COURSE MAP Download a copy of the course map. When moving from hole 6 tee to the north side of Swede Creek, please use the trail back to the road, crossing the creek.

SCORING

RENTAL EQUIPMENT & OUTFITTER CENTER

We have the course loaded onto an app you can use on iPhones or android phones for scoring, tips, distances and a satellite image of each hole. Download the app “UDisc Disc Golf.” Once you set up an account (use the free version — no need to pay unless you want to keep scores), click on “Courses” and search “Cordillera Ranch.” You can add players and keep score for your group.

Members of The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch can rent sets of discs in a backpack from the Outfitter Center. Contact Shane Reynolds at 210.616.6051 or at outfitter@cordilleraranch.com to make arrangements to pick-up and drop-off the equipment.

DISC GOLF COURSE RULES • The object of the game is to play the round in the fewest number of throws. • Do not throw until park visitors are safely out of range. Always give park users the right of way. • Begin playing each hole by teeing off from the tee pad near tee stone. Throws must be completed with both feet behind the tee stone. • All other throws are made from behind where the disc comes to rest. • The player whose disc is furthest from the basket throws first. • To complete the hole, the disc must come to rest in the basket or chains. • Tee-off order is determined by players’ scores on the previous hole; lowest score tees first. • A player may not break, bend or hold back any part of a tree or vegetation in order to make room for their throwing motion or their path to the basket. • Allow faster groups to play through when possible.

HOURS The disc golf course is open daily from dawn to dusk (subject to closure due to maintenance, special events and weatherrelated conditions).

PAVILION PARK PLAYGROUND The Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association approved the purchase of not one, but two new sets of playground equipment at Pavilion Park. We have more than double the size of the playground area and selected systems that cater to a variety of ages. The systems selected were Elephant Rock and Bonita Bay. Elephant Rock is a multi-event obstacle course that includes the Crab Climber course, the Zig Zag Challenge and the S-Balance Bridge. There are also multiple climbing walls for the kids to challenge themselves on, as well as a slide to top it all off. The Bonita Bay set offers a variety of activities for children including the Boulder Climber, Curved Tube Bridge and multiple slides ranging from three to six feet tall. Bonita Bay caters to the younger children in the neighborhood, so we added Elephant Rock for the older children. The POA removed the existing pea gravel which was used as a base previously and has replaced it with tumbled playground mulch. The area is now bordered in cut limestone block, which will soon include the addition of picnic tables, benches and new trash receptacles. The horseshoe pits will be rebuilt on the lake side of the playground near two of the picnic tables.

Kevin Koether is the CRPOA General Manager. He can be reached at 830.336.3501 and kkoether@cordilleraranch.com.
