Originally, I was going to write a little piece about summer and heat and all the fun things to do this time of year. Timely? Yes. Predictable? 100%! Then I read the feature article about the Leonard family and their love of time spent together, both at home and abroad. It got me thinking — is it the places we visit, or the people we visit those places with that leaves the lasting impression? Maybe it’s both.

A friend of mine in the world of private club/community development once told me that while it’s important to provide great amenities — world-class golf, a five-star resort-worthy pool, great park space — lots of places have those things. We want to augment those amenities with small details that mean a great deal, ultimately offering a friendly, comfortable environment where folks will want to come together to create lasting memories. It’s not as though they won’t remember playing that great course or strolling through a spectacular clubhouse, but what they’ll talk about and what will bring them back are often the little details and memories they shared or experienced while they were there. And if done right, those experiences happen organically.

I suppose that’s true, whether we are traveling or home here at Cordillera Ranch. The drink Megan and Neal shared while playing The Hay at Pebble Beach — a small detail, but one they’ll keep forever. The smiling children that flocked to them in Rwanda — a small detail, but one they’ll keep forever. Their visits to Swede Creek Park with Bogey where he (and they!) can catch up with friends — a small detail, but one they’ll keep forever.

360-485-6946 :: jmahan@cordilleraranch.com

HOMETOWN: I currently reside in Spring Branch, Texas but I am originally from New Mexico

FAMILY MEMBERS: Wife Jennifer, 4 Children – Charles, Caitlyn, Coy and Madeline.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE WORK IN THIS FIELD?

I've always been fascinated by how things work. As a kid, I would take things apart just to see if I could put them back together. My dad worked in construction and woodworking, so I grew up learning how to build everything from bridges and schools to malls and houses. We also had a small farm where we raised cattle, horses and pigs, and grew most of our vegetables. My uncle taught me how to work on cars and engines, and I enjoyed helping him tear down and rebuild motors. My mom was very creative and inspired me to explore my artistic side — I taught myself to draw, paint and sculpt. Whether it's fixing, creating or repairing, I've always been drawn to working with my hands and bringing ideas to life.

WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR CORDILLERA RANCH?

After relocating to Texas, I began working for Mr. Appliance, where I gained hands-on experience repairing a wide range of household appliances. In addition to that role, I provided appliance installation services for new construction projects and operated a sign shop, designing and producing custom signage and logos that can still be seen throughout the Hill Country. I later partnered with G. Morris Custom Homes, initially installing appliances and eventually joining their team to handle various repair projects. This led to my promotion as head of the warranty department. I also contributed to the construction of residential pools with Hanalei Pools. Beyond Texas, my professional background includes managing field operations in the dirt and oil industries of Oklahoma, serving as a data analyst and fiscal technician, and working in the Department of Corrections for the State of Washington. This diverse and hands-on work experience has equipped me with a broad skill set that I now apply daily at Cordillera Ranch.

WHAT WOULD YOUR SLOGAN BE IF YOU WERE A BRAND?

If I had to choose a personal motto, it might be: "Just figure it out." It’s something I feel has defined much of my life. That mindset has pushed me to find solutions through persistence, creativity, and by approaching challenges from unique or unconventional angles — what some might call “thinking outside the box.”

AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

When I was younger, I dreamed of becoming a stuntman. There was something about the adrenaline, the precision and the daring nature of it all that completely captured my imagination. I used to picture myself leaping from buildings or performing high-speed car chases.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GENRE OF MUSIC?

I enjoy all types of music, but my preferred genre is country. That said, my taste is pretty broad — I appreciate everything from classical and jazz to rap and heavy metal.

IF YOU COULD TIME TRAVEL, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

If I had the chance, I think I’d want to make several stops throughout time. I’d love to see and reconnect with family I’ve lost, to witness firsthand what life was like during the settling of the West in the 1800s, or to experience the world as it was in the 1940s and ’50s. I’d even want to go back to the time when Jesus walked the earth, to truly understand the challenges and triumphs people faced during that era.

WHO IS YOUR HERO/MENTOR,

AND WHY?

My parents and my wife have had the greatest impact on my life. I’ve always admired my mom and dad in different ways — through the values they instilled in me and my siblings, and the example they set in how they lived and cared for others. My wife is one of the strongest, most inspiring people I’ve ever known, and I feel incredibly lucky to share my life with her. Over the years, there have been others I’ve looked up to, but without a doubt, these three have always stood at the top.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL?

One of my all-time favorite meals has to be chicken-fried steak (or country-fried steak), served with creamy mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables and plenty of rich brown gravy. It’s my go-to comfort food, and whenever I’m trying out a new restaurant, this is usually the dish I order — it’s the perfect way to see how well they do the classics.

WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

To restore a 1969 Dodge Charger. Visit every place my ancestors are from, such as the village in Italy where my grandfather was born, and find out where in Ireland my dad’s family originated. We could only trace them back to the Civil War. .

The Leonard Family’s Beautifully Blended Life in Cordillera Ranch

Suta :: Photography by David Teran; personal photos courtesy of the Leonard family
When Megan and Neal Leonard met on what Neal calls a “semi-blind date,” neither expected it would lead to a life built on faith, family and, of course, a whole lot of fun.

“We first saw each other at a Justin Timberlake concert,” Megan recalled. “We didn’t meet then, but we were in the same suite.” It wasn’t until a week later that their friends stepped in and officially introduced them, believing the two to be a better fit than Neal’s original date at the concert. “My friend Sara called and said she knew someone she thought would be a perfect fit for me — more compatible. And Megan and I hit it off from the getgo,” added Neal.

In fact, the couple shared their first official date — sushi and putt-putt golf — and a whirlwind romance quickly followed. “Our first 10 dates were very creative and well thought out,” said Megan. “We had an agenda,” confirmed Neal. “There was a cooking class, we went to the Floore’s Country Store to dance, and we even watched the Tech game.” They bonded quickly over shared values and experiences, like their love for Texas Tech.

According to Neal, the older two kids (Walker and Lexi) are fourth generation Red Raiders, as their great grandmother attended Tech in the ‘30s. “I don’t know how many fourth-generation kids are on campus, but there probably aren’t too many,” mused Neal.

The journey to becoming a family of seven wasn’t conventional, but it was unmistakably guided. “I had Walker and Lexi, and Megan had Jaidyn,” Neal shared. “We also have two children together, Crew and Collins, so we have a blended family of five kids.”

Walker (26) is married to Emma and lives in San Antonio. Lexi (23) just graduated from Texas Tech and is set to begin work at Ernst & Young in January. Jaidyn (14) is about to start Boerne High School, while Crew (8) and Collins (6) attend San Antonio Christian School. “We have kids in all ages and stages of life,” laughed Megan. “There’s always something exciting going on over here.”

That wonderfully diverse energy has shaped their social circle in surprising ways. “It really impacts Megan and my social group quite a bit, even within the Club,” explained Neal. “We’re friends with parents of elementary kids and friends who are empty nesters. It makes things dynamic.”

Though their road together has been defined by love and laughter, it’s also a tale of resilience. “Neal was widowed for nine years, and I was a single mom before we met. We moved pretty quickly. We were engaged within six months and married within a year,” said Megan.

Neal remembers the moment he knew Megan was the one for him. “I was about to go hunting in Montana, and we had just spent four weekends together. I thought, ‘If I come back and still feel this way, this thing has legs.’ I even changed my flight and came back early because I couldn’t wait to see her.”

Their wedding, officiated privately by Max Lucado with their children present, was followed by a big celebration two months later. “We had to make decisions about life sooner than later,” said Neal. “We’re a little unorthodox — we’re not your average family. But we knew we wanted to blend our lives.”

And what made Megan fall for Neal? “He’s funny, smart, handsome and so kind and attentive … always thinking about what was best for me and Jaidyn. He even brought her a gift early on. That’s what really won me over — it warmed my mom’s heart.”

For this couple, being intentional is everything — especially when it comes to family. “We’re planning a kindergarten

graduation and a college graduation at the same time,” shared Neal. “We have to be really thoughtful about how we do vacations and holidays. It’s fun watching our 8-year-old and our 26-year-old do things together like playing wiffle ball in the driveway.”

“All of our kids are really close,” added Megan. “Jaidyn doesn’t remember life without Neal, Walker and Lexi. This is her family.”

One of their favorite family traditions is skiing in Big Sky, Montana every spring break — a tradition going back 11 years. Beloved summers are spent enjoying the lake or beach, and they’ve also taken memorable family trips to Cabo, Hawaii and on Disney cruises. “We try to think of things that all of our kids will enjoy,” she confirmed.

Until recently, the Leonards owned a lake house on Lake LBJ for eight years. “The kids really grew up there,” said Megan. “Surfing, tubing and wakeboarding — those were our weekends.”

When it’s just the two of them, Megan and Neal enjoy running together (they once ran a half marathon in Las Vegas), as well as taking time for special date nights, yoga and golf. “We just got back from Pebble Beach. We played a 9-hole par 3, walking around with cocktails and clubs — it was a blast,” said Neal.

As you might have guessed, Neal also loves playing golf on the Cordillera Ranch course, usually two to three times a week, and is a regular in tournaments. Neal is semi-retired and working on three different family business boards, including Leonard Holding Co. He also chairs Africa New Life, which is a Christian-based nonprofit that supports schools, churches and women’s vocational programs in Rwanda.

“Rwanda is a beautiful country — the land of a thousand hills, I think they call it. We sponsor 11,000 kids in eight different schools. It’s pretty amazing,” he said proudly. “You pull up in a van, and within minutes, 200 kids come running, smiling, wanting to play soccer. They call us ‘mzungus.’ It’s like being Beyoncé.”

Besides taking on the rewarding yet arduous job of a full-time mom, Megan serves on the board of NextTalk, a San Antonio-based nonprofit that helps families navigate digital safety, which seems to be more and more crucial as a parent these days. “They teach open communication in the home and how to cyber-parent in today’s world,” she explained. “I heard someone speak about it 15 years ago, and now it’s become a big part of our life.”

Both born and raised in San Antonio, the Leonards moved to Boerne in 2021, then into their beautiful, newly built Cordillera Ranch home in late 2023. “It was exciting to move out of the city. Our daughter was friends with a girl whose mom invited us to the Club at Cordillera for a pool day, and I fell in love immediately,” remembered Megan.

Neal’s connection goes back even further. “My dad had a membership here before the golf course was even finished,” he noted. “But it wasn’t until I transitioned roles that we considered moving to the country to build a life here.”

Now they enjoy nearly 13 pristine acres of Cordillera Ranch land, idyllic views of

the stars and access to nearby trails — perfect for running and walking Bogey, their two-year-old golden doodle who they admit is spoiled rotten and thinks of himself as one of the kids. There’s no denying he’s an esteemed member of this delightful family. Whenever they can, Neal and Megan like to take Bogey to Swede Creek River Park. “Ten or so owners all bring their dogs. Everyone knows each other’s dogs by name. It’s like doggy playdates with a global crowd — folks from England. It’s wild,” said Neal.

The couple also shared that they’re extremely grateful for the unique sense of community at Cordillera Ranch. “I love that it’s family-friendly with lots to do, but also that we have space and feel so safe here,” said Megan. “I like the diversity of the people,” agreed Neal, adding, “Some young families like us, some older folks. Great amenities. Junior programs. And yeah … you can see the stars.”

From blended beginnings to their life of purpose and play in Cordillera Ranch, the Leonards are living proof that love doesn’t follow a formula, but it does follow intention.

C-STAR 2025

The 2025 C-Star was held the first week of May and while we faced a few challenges from Mother Nature, we were able to get most of the golf tournament completed along with the shootout to crown our champions. Before we dive into the shootout, let's start with a brief overview of the event.

On Thursday morning, most of the field played a practice round followed by lunch and then a 9-hole putting tournament on the course. We split the field over the front and back nines and created some very difficult putts for the players to navigate. Congratulations to Brett Nichols and Brady Shivers for winning the Front Nine, and Jeff Stahl and Bruce Boruszak for winning the Back Nine. After the putting tournament, the players gathered at the Practice Park to enjoy a little live music, cigars, cocktails and a delicious meal prepared by Chef Isaac and his team. In addition, we had a fun activity planned with a golf ball cannon hooked up to an assault rifle that got cut short by a little storm that blew in. Don't worry — we didn't cut the party short, everyone shifted up to Axis to enjoy the rest of the evening.

The tournament officially started on Friday and we got most of our scheduled golf in before another storm rolled in from the west. On Saturday, we had a couple holes to finish from the prior day and then rolled right into the 4th and 5th matches where we crowned our flight champions.

On Saturday afternoon, we headed over to #10 to start the Shootout with our flight champions. Per tradition, our sequence was #10, #11, #16, #17 and #18 — eliminating two teams on each hole leading up to #18. There were a lot of penalty shots on that first shootout hole — the team of Morris/Freeman blasted two tee shots wide right while a few of the other teams found the penalty area. Even after those wild tee shots (which they are known for), Morris/Freeman still had a chance to advance but weren't able to navigate the difficult putting surface on #10. Stu and his team didn't think the greens were fast enough so they rolled the greens again before the shootout ... 13.8 on the stimpmeter — it was like putting on a curved granite counter top. The team of Dommert/Sloan also struggled with #10 green and were eliminated after making a net triple bogey.

DOYLE DOMMERT AND BRUCE SLOAN

Once we made it to #11, we ended up with a 4-way chip-off where only one team would be eliminated — this was a first for me ... we've had chip-offs in the past, but never with four teams. We picked a very difficult chip and I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of shots hit. Unfortunately for the team of Stroud/Tremblay, their chip was just a few inches outside the others. In addition, the team of Norcross/Sanders ended their shootout with a few wild shots and too many putts.

Our signature hole, #16, only plays about 125 yards and is known for bringing a tragic ending to many teams’ shootout runs — this year didn't disappoint. I'm fairly certain Zane Price and Jim Crites are still putting on #16 ... to be perfectly honest, I lost track of how many putts they hit and just wrote down an X on my scoresheet. The team of Vanderpool/Lile were eliminated via a chip-off after losing to Smith/VanBuren.

By the time we got to #17, only four teams were left standing. After a few good tee shots and one pulled a little left, everyone ended up near the green in a similar number of strokes. The teams of Harris/Conner and Stock/Stock made net pars to safely advance to #18. While the team of Pratt/Polo advanced further than last year, and Gabe was able to earn a little redemption, they finished 4th in the shootout after making a double-bogey. Congrats to those who wagered on Larry Smith and Matt VanBuren as they made a bogey on #17 to finish third in the parimutuel.

If you feel like this recap is long, you should have been out there for the shootout — it also set a new record for the longest shootout in Cordillera Ranch history! Harris/Conner hit a good tee shot right up the gut on #18 while Stock/Stock tugged it a hair into the left rough. However, both teams ended up just short of the green and it looked like it was anyone's championship. After a couple of duffed chips and missed putts, we headed back to #18 again as both teams made triple-bogey. The second go-around resulted in similar results but the team of Tracy Harris and Ricky Conner came up victorious. Congrats to our 2025 C-Star Champions.

2025 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Senior, Junior and Ladies' Club Championships were contested in the middle of May — there was some great golf played and some interesting story lines that unfolded.

LADIES’ CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

In the Ladies' Club Championship, we had 21 players that were divided into three flights: Championship (6), First (7) and Senior (8). Taylor Coleman ran away with the Championship Flight gross competition with rounds of 70 and 71 — I'm fairly certain those are the first under-par scores ever shot in a ladies' event at Cordillera Ranch. For those who don't know Taylor, she grew up here at Cordillera Ranch, made the cut in an LPGA Tour Event as an amateur, won 4 AJGA tournaments, and played college golf at Arizona State. As you can see, she knows how to golf her ball and we are super excited that her and Tyler Cook (her fiancé) joined the Club. On the net side, we had a familiar winner in the Championship Flight — Yana Dommert — who won the 2020 and 2024 Ladies' Club Championships. This year, she had a very close net battle with Leah Bird who finished one shot behind Yana. In the First Flight, Karen Jackson captured the gross title by 4 shots over Kari Hollway. On the net side of the First Flight, Cynthia Bryson clipped Missy Dusenbury by 1 shot to claim the title.

The Senior division of the Ladies' Club Championship was added in 2024 and we ended up with a back-to-back champion — Linda Steers. However, it didn't come easy for Linda this year as she entered the second round 7 shots back from Kathy Rynearson. Linda closed that gap on the second day to tie with Kathy. To determine a champion, we had a playoff starting on #18 — both ladies found a bit of trouble there but Linda relied on her multiple Club championship victories and came up victorious. Kathy also tied for first in the net competition with Jamie Angelich but lost the scorecard playoff.

MEN’S SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

After the ladies played that Wednesday and Thursday, the senior men and juniors battled the course on Saturday and Sunday. In the Men's Senior Club Championship, we had 33 guys divided into two divisions: Senior (19) and Super Senior (14). Alex Preston fired rounds of 77 and 78 to beat out Steve Wade by 3 shots in the gross portion of the Super Senior Division. On the net side, Mike Stock dominated the field with a two-day total of 6-under par and Scott Wilson finished 2nd at 3-over par.

In the Senior Division, Aldon Williams bested Nick Vanderpool by one shot to claim the net title. On the gross side, John Long (2-time Senior Club Champion) came out of the gates hot with a 1-under par 71 in the first round to take a 6-shot lead over Dan Hansen. Halfway through the second round, that lead evaporated to only one shot. John didn't have his best stuff on Sunday as he dropped a few more shots on the back nine enroute to a 3rd place finish. Andrew Tosdevin (known as BP by his buddies), started the second round 7 shots back, picked up a few through the turn, and fired an impressive 1-under par 35 on the back nine to be the leader in the Clubhouse while the final group was playing #18. Dan Hansen was in the hunt all day and actually had the lead on the back nine. After a late bogey on #16, he needed par on #18 to force a playoff with BP. Unfortunately for Dan, his tee shot found the native area left of the fairway and while he found his ball, he didn't have much of a shot. After taking penalty relief and punching it up by the green, he played a phenomenal wedge shot that grazed the cup and even-though he made the bogey putt, it was one shot too many. Congratulations to your 2025 Senior Club Champion — Andrew Tosdevin.

JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

In the Junior Club Championship, we had seven kids that were divided into three age divisions: 9 & Under (2), 10 to 13 (2), and 14 & Up (3). The 9 & Under Division played two 9-hole rounds while the other two divisions played a 36-hole tournament. Congrats to Brexton Nichols and Charlotte Sudyka — both players are in our junior programs and are developing their love for the game. Brexton edged out Charlotte by a few shots to earn some hardware. The 10 to 13 Division was essentially the continuation of a years-long family battle in the Hill family. This time around it was Ella vs Preston and while they had plenty of fun, don't kid yourself — there was plenty of competition in there, too. Ella came out on top this year and Preston is counting down the days to next year's Junior Club Championship. In the 14 & Up Division, Julia Hansen ran away with it. She's got a few years on Walker West and Jordan Zabaldo as Jordan is only 13 but decided to challenge himself and step up a division this year. Julia's game has really developed over the last couple years — last year she won three STPGA Junior Tour events and finished 2nd in the TAPPS 5A State Championship this year. Congrats to your 2025 Junior Club Champion — Julia Hansen.

See you on the course, Corey

HONORING THE MASTERS OF THE GREENS

I think it’s safe to say that our Agronomy team members are the unsung heroes of the game, and I’d like to introduce and recognize three of them. Their dedication, expertise and passion for turf management ensures that every round our members play is on pristine fairways and flawless greens, surrounded by thriving natural habitats. When you see them on the course, stop and say hello to Brandon Fuchs, Wesley Komick, and Mitchell Kilkenny.

BRANDON FUCHS GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Brandon Fuchs joined The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in September 2023, bringing with him nearly a decade of experience in golf course management and a strong background in turfgrass science. Born and raised in Rosebud, Texas, Brandon developed an early appreciation for the outdoors and the game of golf. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 2014 with a degree in Turfgrass Science, laying the foundation for a successful career in the golf industry.

Throughout his professional journey, Brandon has contributed his expertise to several of Texas's top clubs, including Bluejack National, Briggs Ranch and Comanche Trace. His attention to detail, passion for turf management and steady leadership make him a valuable part of the Cordillera Ranch agronomy team.

Outside of work, Brandon enjoys playing golf, strategizing over a game of chess and spending time on the course with his loyal dog, Norman. He and his wife, Cassandra — married for five years — are excited to be welcoming their first child in November. Brandon is proud to be part of the Cordillera community and looks forward to helping deliver an exceptional golf experience year-round.

WESLEY KOMICK ASSISTANT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Wesley Komick, a native of Durango, Colorado, grew up immersed in the hospitality world as his family owned and operated a bed and breakfast. Watching his father manage people and create memorable guest experiences sparked a lasting appreciation for service and leadership. Though Wesley played lacrosse and tennis in his youth, he now jokes that he wishes he’d picked up a golf club a bit sooner.

He earned a diploma in the fashion industry from Colorado State University and had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy, which ignited a lifelong love for travel. Graduating during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wesley returned home to help with the family business. With the hotel closed temporarily, he took a job at a local golf course — initially just for the playing privileges — but quickly discovered a passion for agronomy and the golf course industry.

Wesley's journey has taken him across the country and beyond, gaining valuable experience at premier clubs including Dalton Ranch Golf Club (CO), Desert Mountain (AZ), TPC Scottsdale (AZ), Phoenix Country Club (AZ), and the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda. In 2024, he joined The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in Boerne, Texas, where he currently serves as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. He takes great pride in his role and values the camaraderie and collaborative spirit of the team.

Outside of work, Wesley enjoys lake days, playing golf and tennis, cooking, traveling and spending quality time with his girlfriend and their dog, Sonny.

MITCHELL KILKENNY ASSISTANT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Mitchell Kilkenny was born and raised in Houston, Texas, alongside his brother Patrick, by parents Julie and Mark Kilkenny. A graduate of Houston Christian High School, Mitchell went on to attend Texas A&M University, where he double-majored in Forestry and Renewable Natural Resources while also excelling as a standout pitcher for the Aggies baseball team. After three years at A&M, he was selected 76th overall in the MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies, launching a seven-year professional baseball career that included time with both the Rockies and the Houston Astros organizations.

Following his time in professional baseball, Mitchell combined his passions for sports and the natural sciences by pursuing a degree in Turfgrass Management from Keiser University (Class of ’25). That transition has led him to a fulfilling second career in golf course agronomy, where he brings the same discipline and dedication that shaped his athletic career.

Mitchell joined Cordillera Ranch as an Assistant Superintendent in the fall of 2024, where he is thrilled to contribute to the maintenance and presentation of a premier playing experience.

Outside of work, Mitchell enjoys playing golf, gardening, attending live music events and exploring the arts. He and his wife, Madelyn — married in 2022 — love being part of the Cordillera Ranch community. On Fridays, you’ll often find Mitchell enjoying Bear Trap and he is always happy to connect with members and guests alike.

SELECTING THE RIGHT COACH TO ELEVATE BOTH SKILL AND MINDSET

Improvement in tennis or pickleball is rarely linear. It requires more than practice — it requires guidance, perspective and a relationship built on trust. At The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, we believe that selecting the right coach is one of the most critical decisions a player can make in their development, whether they are just beginning their journey or striving for high-performance refinement.

A coach’s role goes beyond correcting technique. The right coach shapes how you think, feel and perform under pressure. Their influence extends into your mental approach, strategic decisions and long-term enjoyment of the game.

START WITH CLEAR OBJECTIVES

Before seeking out a coach, it’s essential to identify what you hope to accomplish:

• Are you a beginner looking to build foundational skills and confidence?

• Do you play regularly and want to improve consistency or court awareness?

• Are you a competitor seeking better tactical execution and mental resilience during matches? Defining your goals early ensures you’re matched with a coach whose teaching philosophy aligns with your aspirations.

KEY QUALITIES OF AN EFFECTIVE COACH

The most effective coaches share a common set of traits, regardless of the sport or level of play:

1. Professional Qualifications. Look for certifications such as USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) or PPR (Professional Pickleball Registry), which indicate a commitment to continued education and teaching standards.

2. Communication and Clarity. A strong coach communicates with clarity and purpose, breaking down complex movements into actionable steps while providing timely, constructive feedback.

3. Adaptability. Every player is different. The best coaches tailor their approach to suit your learning style, physical abilities and personality.

FOCUS ON MENTAL PERFORMANCE

More than ever, the mental aspect of racquet sports plays a defining role in success. A coach should help players:

• Manage nerves and frustration

• Develop match strategies

• Improve focus and emotional control

• Build confidence and composure under pressure

A thoughtful, mentally-focused coach cultivates a mindset of resilience, which often proves more valuable than any technical adjustment.

CHEMISTRY MATTERS

In any coaching relationship, trust and rapport are vital. A trial lesson or short introductory period allows players to assess how they respond to a coach’s style and communication. Are you motivated after each session? Do you leave the court with greater clarity and purpose? These questions are key indicators of compatibility.

CONSIDER THE ENVIRONMENT

At The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, we take pride in creating an environment where coaching is not transactional — it is transformative. Our team is selected not only for their technical

knowledge but for their ability to connect with players, inspire improvement, and foster a love for the game. Whether in private instruction, small group clinics or competitive programming, we strive to align each player with a coach who complements their goals and temperament.

CONCLUSION

The journey to improvement is personal. The right coach will challenge and support you in equal measure, helping you grow not just as a player, but as a competitor and learner of the game. At The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, our goal is to ensure every member has the opportunity to find that partnership — one that brings clarity to your swing, confidence to your decisions and joy to your time on the court.

We offer private lessons as well as group classes for all skill levels, and we’d love to help you get started. For more information or a personal coaching consultation, please visit the Racquet Sports Office or contact our Director of Racquet Sports, Alejandro Chong.

BALANCING SUMMER FITNESS AND RELAXATION

“I will get back to it after my vacation,” says many a fitness enthusiast who vacations or some who stay in a cooler climate during the summer months. I say there is no better time than the present. In previous articles, I have mentioned fitness being YOUR journey, not a destination, and working out is for your health and wellness. Fitness is life-long and not an event. Life is a balance of ebb and flow, and there might be more “ebb” than “flow” during the summer season. Of course, when you are on vacation, you are there to relax. Even going on a walk or doing a few stretches is exercise.

I am here to nudge you into a fitness-all-year state of mind. I will list the top three excuses and my top three solutions.

• “I don’t have a gym where I am going.” I am here to let you know that you are the gym. Body weight exercises are perfectly fine to use. Squats, lunges, push-ups, planks and floor work are all accessible to you anytime, anywhere. A neat tool many underestimate is a set of stairs. You can, of course, walk or run them to get in some cardio. You can also do step-up to squats, calf raises, push-ups and dips on the stairs. Crawling upstairs (not downstairs) is a total body workout. Make sure to stretch after you finish.

• “There is no equipment.” Tubing, mini bands, monster bands and the TRX straps are so easy to tuck away into a suitcase. Jump ropes also travel well.

• “It’s hard to get into a routine when I am away.” A few articles ago, I spoke of how trying new things boosts confidence and brain cells. Well, there is no better time to try a different trainer, video or class. Another option is to take a video of your surroundings and allow your Cordillera trainer design a workout using what is available to you.

Relaxation is important, too. Give yourself time to rejuvenate, read books and go on tours while you are out. You can even schedule excursions that are active, then relax the rest of the day. Jump in for a workout between vacations as well! Always ease back in so you don’t injure yourself after having time off. Creating this balance saves you from dreading the added pounds from vacation. An ounce of prevention …

BEHIND THE PLATE

THE ART, STRATEGY AND PASSION STIRRED INTO EVERY MENU

Menus, menus, menus — if only more people could glimpse at what goes on behind the scenes with Chef Isaac and our culinary team. I’ve worked in restaurants and luxury hotels for decades, and I’m still amazed at the scale and complexity of the Food & Beverage operation here at Cordillera Ranch. It rivals — if not exceeds — some of the largest hospitality properties I’ve been part of.

What sets us apart is simple: we don’t just offer menus — we build them from scratch, every single day.

In most places, if you’re hosting an event, you’re choosing from a fixed catering package. There’s no flexibility, no personalization. But that’s not how we do things here. Chef Isaac has always held the belief that every dining experience — whether for a member’s birthday dinner or a Tuesday luncheon — should feel personal and custom. That means our Executive Chef and Private Events Manager often write 10 to 15 entirely new menus each week. These are handcrafted experiences for our members.

And that’s before we even get to the daily service menus in Axis, Twin Sisters, the Main Dining Room and the Pool.

If you look back at the launch of Axis, it’s a perfect example of the care that goes into each concept. From the initial idea, to countless drafts and tastings, to staff training and service execution — it’s easily a 3-to-6-month process before the outlet runs smoothly and consistently. And just as that happens, we begin preparing for the next launch — whether it’s the Signature Dinner menu, the seasonal Pool Menu or, now, the Ranch Menu.

We’re incredibly excited to debut this new season of the Ranch Menu — and it’s more than just an update. We’ve introduced 16 new dishes, thoughtfully crafted to replace existing items and breathe fresh life into the menu. These changes aren’t made lightly. Every dish that comes off and every dish that goes on is the result of testing, tasting, member feedback and culinary vision. From starters to entrées, the new lineup reflects Chef Isaac’s focus on ingredients, flavors and continued creativity. It’s our way of keeping the experience exciting for our members while staying true to the core philosophy: approachable, elevated ranch-style cuisine done with excellence. What excites me most is not just the new menu itself — but the range of experiences we now offer across all our outlets.

Imagine this: You start your morning with a cappuccino and a fresh-baked croissant at Axis, paired with a perfectly made omelet. After a round of golf or a few errands, you drop into Twin Sisters for a light lunch with friends — maybe the Ahi Tuna Stack or Hummus Two Ways. In the evening, you’re hosting guests in the Main Dining Room and enjoying our Signature Menu with a

great bottle of wine. That’s three unique menus, three different settings, all in one day — without repeating a single dish.

This isn’t accidental. It’s by design. Our goal is to create diverse experiences across all venues so that every visit to the Club feels new, fresh and tailored to you. Across all venues and meal periods, we currently serve more than 150 items. That means you could dine at the Club every day for six months and never repeat the same item.

But a wide selection is only part of the story. What really sets us apart

is how we do things.

While many restaurants and clubs have embraced shortcuts — pre-cut steaks, frozen fish, jarred sauces — we hold fast to the fundamentals. Every fish is purchased whole and butchered in-house. Our steaks are aged, trimmed, and cut by our team. Stocks, soups, reductions and sauces are built from scratch the way they should be.

And that same philosophy is alive and well in one of the sweetest parts of our operation: the Pastry Department. Each day, they create everything in-house: bread, rolls, pastries, cookies, cakes and desserts. From morning Danishes to wedding cakes, nothing is pre-made or frozen. It’s all handcrafted, fresh and tailored to the season, the menu and even the member’s preferences. Whether it’s an elegant plated dessert or a custom cake order for a private event, the passion and love behind each creation is clear — and it elevates our entire program.

So, when we talk about menu variety at Cordillera Ranch, we’re not just talking about choices. We’re talking about carefully curated, skillfully executed, and intentionally crafted culinary experiences that reflect our passion for food and our commitment to excellence.

If you haven’t explored all of what we offer lately — Axis, Twin Sisters, the Main Dining Room, the Pool or one of our big events — I encourage you to do so. Come experience the passion that fuels this incredible team, and enjoy some great food.

See you at the table.

Michael McClellan is the Director of Food & Beverage at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. He can be reached at 830.336.9164 and mmcclellan@cordilleraranch.com.

You wouldn’t buy running shoes that are too small, so why use clubs that do not fit you or your golf game? Equipment fitting is arguably one of the most overlooked and delayed aspects of the game. So many people put off investing in new equipment until their game improves, when in reality, having the right clubs is going to make getting better so much easier.

One thing that makes Cordillera Ranch stand out among other facilities is we perform all our club fitting in house. This allows the fitting process to be much more personal and you can trust that our professional staff will ensure your equipment is maximizing your game, whether this is by adjusting your current set or dialing in new clubs. The performance center houses the latest and greatest from top brands — Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist, Ping, XXIO and Srixon.

Equipment tuning services that are also available to you:

• Distance measuring with TrackMan

• Golf ball fitting

So, whether you’re lounging with friends, watching the kids splash around, or soaking in the Texas sun with a chilled cocktail in hand, poolside dining here feels like a mini vacation without ever leaving the Ranch. TRAIL RIDES, FINE DINING & TEXAS SUNSETS:

A GETAWAY TO ROUGH CREEK LODGE

This past April, Club members saddled up for an unforgettable escape to Rough Creek Lodge & Resort in Glen Rose, Texas — an exclusive equestrian adventure designed for riders of all levels, whether bringing their own horses or enjoying the privilege of Club-owned mounts. One of the many perks of The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch membership is the seamless experience: the Equestrian Center team manages every detail of horse care, so guests can focus on the journey, the scenery and the fun.

From April 10th through the 13th, we were welcomed by the warm hospitality of Rough Creek’s staff and impressive facilities, including a top-notch barn, arena and miles of riding terrain. Each morning began with fresh coffee and anticipation as we set out on exploratory rides across thousands of acres — no trails, just adventure. Guided by curiosity and camaraderie, every outing was a new discovery under the wide Texas sky.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the magic continued. Evenings were reserved for elegant three-course dinners featuring gourmet cuisine and impeccable service, followed by sunset rides that brought a sense of peace and awe to close each day. The experience was both luxurious and grounding — a rare balance only a place like Rough Creek can offer.

One of the highlights? A spontaneous detour on our final evening led us to the whimsical Dinosaur Trail, where even our horses seemed amused by the prehistoric giants. It was a moment of shared laughter and lighthearted fun that capped off a remarkable journey.

Beyond the trails, Rough Creek offered a bounty of activities — pickleball, rod and gun experiences, bowling, batting cages, biking and more. Whether relaxing with a delicious breakfast or venturing into new territory on horseback, every moment delivered something special.

This retreat was a perfect blend of adventure, comfort and community — and it’s just the beginning. We’re already counting down to our next equestrian getaway, planned for the first weekend in October. Want to join the ride? Reach out to Jenn Guidt for more information on future trips.

Saddle up — your next great story is waiting.

Jenn Guidt is the Equestrian Center Manager at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. She can be reached at 803.840.0875 and jguidt@cordilleraranch.com.

“Our trip to Rough Creek Ranch in Glen Rose, Texas is one that I would recommend to anyone. The food was fabulous and the accommodations for us, as well as our equine companions, were excellent. While our trip was centered around trail riding, the Ranch had a multitude of activities for all ages and interests. A wonderfully planned excursion.”

“We had the time of our lives riding across diverse terrain largely free of rocky impediments. We traversed multiple streams and creeks, sometimes letting the horses splash so they could also have fun. The highlight of our trip was the last sunset ride, which transformed into a stunning, magical moonlight ride. Jenn Guidt went beyond the call of duty taking exceptional care of the horses and us as well … when she overheard me saying I was having some difficulty pulling my heavy saddle out of the trailer and throwing it on my horse, from then on, my mare was tacked up and ready for me to mount up and ride off. It was indeed another well organized, wonderful and memorable Cordillera Ranch Signature Vacation shared with friends.”

AN UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURE IN ARGENTINA: GOLF, DOVES AND CULTURE

Next spring, join Club staff Corey Roberson and Shane Reynolds on a weeklong adventure to Argentina, blending worldclass dove hunting, championship golf and rich South American culture into a seamless and unforgettable journey.

The trip begins in Buenos Aires, Argentina’s cosmopolitan capital, where our group will begin this adventure as we check into the elegant Hub Porteño, a boutique hotel in the heart of Recoleta. After settling in, the group will enjoy a classic Argentine steak dinner paired with an intimate tango performance at the iconic Rojo Tango — a fitting welcome to a country known for passion and hospitality.

Day two delivers a golfer’s dream: a morning transfer to the famed Pilar Golf Club, known for its pristine 27-hole layout and countryside charm. After a round of golf, the group returns to the city for a memorable dinner at the award-winning Don Julio, one of Latin America's most celebrated steakhouses.

The third day marks a transition to the sporting heart of the trip — dove hunting in Córdoba. A short flight transports the group to Sierra Brava, a luxury lodge set in Argentina’s most legendary wingshooting region. After an afternoon warm-up shoot and a traditional asado feast, the lodge becomes home base for two full days of exceptional hunting.

Days four and five are dedicated to the field, where thousands of doves fill the sky. Mornings and afternoons are spent on expertly guided hunts, broken up by siestas, gourmet lunches and evenings by the firepit with fine wines, cigars and optional massage services.

On day six, the group will golf at the prestigious Córdoba Golf Club, followed by a tour of the historic Jesuit quarter.

We will return to Buenos Aires on the seventh day for cultural exploration and a final celebratory dinner at Alvear Grill. The final day offers time for last-minute shopping or a museum visit before flying home — filled with memories of great sport, fine dining and the camaraderie that only a trip like this can inspire.

TAKE FLIGHT IN STYLE WITH LUXURY AVIATION COMPANY, FLIGHTIME! TAKE FLIGHT IN STYLE WITH LUXURY AVIATION COMPANY, FLIGHTIME!

For Cordillera Ranch residents seeking the freedom of flight without the frustration of commercial travel, there's one name in the sky you need to know, and it’s FlighTime Business Jets.

Owned and operated by Cordillera Ranch residents, Mark Huffstutler and his daughter Katelyn Huffstutler Schanze, FlighTime is part of the expansive aviation enterprise SkyWay Group, a familyowned company with nearly 50 years in the corporate aviation business and almost three decades operating FlighTime. It’s not surprising that FlighTime has quietly become a trusted name in highend private jet charter, management and brokerage — offering a bespoke experience with unparalleled personal care worldwide.

“We’ve been around almost 29 years now in South Texas,” said Katelyn, who serves as Charter Concierge. “We’re a locally based, family-owned business, and we’re thrilled to support the aviation needs of this community, especially for our fellow Cordillera folks and ranchitos.”

Their love for Cordillera Ranch and the Boerne area runs deep. “I moved to Cordillera in 2016, and Katelyn joined in 2024,” recalled Mark, FlighTime’s CEO. “We liked it so much, we convinced her to come out, too.”

FlighTime offers a full range of services — from on-demand jet and helicopter charters to fractional and full aircraft ownership with comprehensive management. Though based in Uvalde, where storage and maintenance operations take place, most client flights originate from nearby airports like San Antonio, Boerne and Kerrville — wherever the need arises.

“We can source aircraft anywhere in the world,” explained Katelyn. “Even though we’re based in San Antonio, we’ve arranged VIP airliners for trips to Bali, helicopter pickups in San Miguel, and even emergency air ambulance flights out of Puerto Vallarta, for example.”

FLIGHTIME’S SERVICES:

To understand more clearly, here’s a breakdown of FlighTime’s services:

On-Demand Private Jet Charter

FlighTime provides access to an extensive network of over 3,899 operators and 12,500 aircraft, offering a range of options to suit various travel needs. Clients can choose from the following:

• Helicopters: Ideal for short-distance travel and accessing remote locations.

• Turboprops: Versatile and efficient for regional flights.

• Very Light Jets: Perfect for short to mid-range trips with a small group.

• Light Jets: Combining performance and comfort for business or leisure travel.

• Mid-Size Jets: Offering enhanced range and cabin space for longer journeys.

• Super Mid-Size Jets: Suitable for transcontinental flights with added luxury.

• Large Cabin Jets: Providing spacious interiors for up to 19 passengers, ideal for international travel.

• Ultra Long-Range Jets: Designed for non-stop intercontinental flights with maximum comfort.

• VIP Airliners: Offering unmatched space and amenities for large groups or special occasions.

Charter Concierge Service

Beyond flight arrangements, FlighTime's Charter Concierge Service ensures a seamless travel experience that includes:

•Personalized Itineraries: Tailored flight schedules to fit clients' specific needs.

• In-Flight Catering: Customized menus to match dietary preferences and tastes.

• Ground Transportation: Coordinated transfers to and from airports.

• 24/7 Support: Round-the-clock assistance for any travel adjustments or inquiries.

Aircraft Management

For aircraft owners, FlighTime offers comprehensive management services to simplify ownership responsibilities. As Mark clarified, “If you travel enough, you ought to own your own airplane, but the details can be more than you want to deal with so that’s where we step in.” Management includes services, such as:

• Maintenance Coordination: Ensuring aircraft meet and exceed FAA standards.

• Insurance Management: Access to extensive liability and hull insurance at competitive rates.

• Pilot Services: Provision of trained and licensed pilots, managed to FlighTime's rigorous standards.

• Operational Support: Handling scheduling, dispatch and compliance with all regulatory requirements.

• Concierge Services: Including hangaring, cleaning, stocking and navigation data updates.

Aircraft Ownership Assistance

FlighTime's dedicated sales staff assists clients in acquiring the right aircraft to match their travel needs and preferences, providing guidance throughout the purchasing process.

Regardless of which service best suits your needs, FlighTime combines industry expertise with personalized service to deliver exceptional private aviation experiences. In one recent case, a client’s friend experienced an unfortunate medical emergency in Mexico.

“She couldn’t travel commercially or on a standard jet so we coordinated everything — an air ambulance, receiving physicians, hospital clearance, ground transportation, the list goes on,” shared Katelyn. “We had her home within 24 hours. When you’re in a foreign country, it’s scary. Our client told us, ‘I didn’t know who to call — but then I remembered you,’ and that kind of trust means everything.”

FlighTime clients range from first-time private flyers to seasoned aircraft owners. The company is known for tailoring each service level to individual needs. “My first questions are always: how often are you flying, where are you flying, and who are you flying with? That helps us figure out what aircraft type fits our client best — whether that’s chartering, fractional ownership or full ownership,” said Katelyn.

According to Mark, determining which option suits your lifestyle best is fairly simple. “If you’re flying less than 50 hours a year, charter is typically the way to go. If you’re flying more, we’ll talk fractional or even full ownership. It’s like golf — if you’re playing 10 rounds a year, pay as you go. But if you’re out there every weekend, maybe it’s time to join the club — or buy the course,” he joked.

While the fractional and membership models are well known in the industry, FlighTime prefers a more flexible approach. “Our clients don’t like being boxed into contracts or stuck with unused hours,” Katelyn noted. “We often recommend on-demand charter — where you pay for each trip and we source the perfect aircraft every single time.”

For those who own jets, FlighTime’s full-service aircraft management takes the stress out of ownership. “It’s like owning a second home,” said Mark. “There are pilots, fuel, maintenance, weather, itineraries … We handle all of that. You just tell us where and when.”

Their attention to detail is legendary. “We’ve sourced snow crab claws, caviar, even arranged water taxis in the Bahamas,” expounded Katelyn. “Whether it’s The Masters or the Super Bowl, we make every trip seamless. No request is too big.”

It’s this combination of reach, reliability and a highly-curated personalized touch that sets FlighTime apart. “We operate with the same white-glove service as the finest hotels or clubs,” Mark adds. “When you fly with us, it’s about more than transportation — it’s about experience.”

And it all began with a passion for flight. “I got my pilot’s license in high school,” confided Mark. “I ended up flying for former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe in the ’70’s. What was supposed to be a six-month gig turned into 50 years of business in Uvalde. My dad and I bought a small operation there, and over the decades we’ve built this into a family of aviation companies.”

Today, his son, Conrad, is a Flight Captain with FlighTime, and Katelyn is running the charter division with grace and a dedication her dad is proud of. Even his grandkids are showing signs of following in their footsteps.

“Honestly, it’s just exciting. We’re in the business of saving people time and giving them amazing experiences. Every day is different, and that’s what makes it so gratifying,” commented Katelyn.

As for the family motto? Mark grins. “Life’s too short for layovers — fly private!”

A STRONGER BERGHEIM VFD MEANS STRONGER FIREFIGHTING SERVICES THROUGHOUT KENDALL COUNTY BUDGETED FUNDS ALLOW BERGHEIM VFD TO PAY PROFESSIONAL FIREFIGHTERS

A blazing inferno engulfed a maintenance building, its contents — flammable fuel, chemicals, and paint — feeding the flames and threatening further catastrophe.

A 76-acre brush fire, propelled by high winds, advanced rapidly toward a nearby school, demanding immediate and strategic intervention.

The Bergheim Volunteer firefighters are ordinary people who are capable of extraordinary actions. And though they never know what they will encounter on each call, they carry on with an extraordinary commitment to service.

It has been said that volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. But despite the courageous spirit, the Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD) has seen a shrinking volunteer roster. This trend is nationwide, with many volunteers dropping off because they cannot afford to volunteer for either financial or time commitment reasons.

“During the past few years, we have had a decrease in volunteers or a decrease in the amount of time volunteers can cover the station. This is detrimental to our coverage area and to backing up the other fire departments in Kendall County,” said Adam Hawkins, BVFD Fire Chief. “At the same time, the population in the county has increased, and our call volume has almost doubled in the last five years. And that means this situation is going to get worse.”

Thanks to a pilot program approved by the Kendall County Commissioners Court, budgeted funds are available to pay professional, off-duty firefighters to work with the volunteer members of the BVFD. Andra Wisian, Kendall County Commissioner Precinct 2, said, "The County Commissioners Court and the BVFD had made efforts to reach an agreement; however, unforeseen delays resulted in the pilot program being limited to four months. As part of the County’s 2025 Fiscal Year budget, $143,026 was allocated for firefighters at BVFD. Of that amount,

A Kendall County resident's electric chair lift stopped working, and a fire department crew stepped in, tirelessly moving him in and out of bed for several days until a replacement could be secured.

An amazing team of EMS medics and a volunteer firefighter administered whole blood to a resident en route to the hospital, ultimately saving his life.

$46,675 has been designated for the pilot program to be used from June through September.”

The BVFD board of directors, the BVFD Fire Chief and residents in the BVFD service area reached out in support of the pilot program to Commissioner Wisian. “About 75% of the BVFD service area is in Precinct 2, and these residents overwhelmingly want consistent emergency response services from the Bergheim VFD,” said Commissioner Wisian. “Additionally, a stronger BVFD will be able to provide even more support for the other volunteer fire departments and Boerne’s paid department.”

Chad Carpenter, County Commissioner Precinct 4, supported the program as well. “Out of the gate, we’ll get more qualified firefighters, for sure,” said Commissioner Carpenter. “I think during the budget process we need to add money to the program, and let the BVFD continue this, so they have a full year to see how this works.”

“This is a major step forward to ensure consistent and reliable fire protection in our district and across the county as we assist other departments,” said Chief Hawkins. “We will be able to provide dedicated coverage, which will improve responsiveness to emergencies and better serve our citizens. A key part of this program is that we will have a guaranteed driver, which is one of our biggest obstacles because certain trucks require drivers with specific certifications.”

Bergheim resident, Maxie Zinsmeister, said that he would rather see the county create a County Assistance District and implement a sales tax increase. “Firefighters could be deployed to the stations and be paid through an increase in sales tax. But, I’m okay with allocating funds directly to Bergheim VFD to hire firefighters at this time, while the county works toward a longterm strategy. This pilot will have a positive impact on all areas of Kendall County as the personnel will be available as needed throughout the county via mutual aid. This also staves off the need for an Emergency Services District and the higher taxes that come with it,” said Mr. Zinsmeister.

“Backed by our County Commissioners, our new paid parttime pilot program strengthens response times, while keeping local volunteer fire department oversight at the heart of what we do,” said Lucy Hudson, BVFD board member and volunteer.

That heart of what they do is the dedication and commitment of the BVFD members to serve their community selflessly, a desire to help others, and to protect their neighbors. The volunteer firefighters say that bringing in professional staff will strengthen and enhance the department.

Kevin Meyers, BVFD Assistant Chief, has been with the department since 2009 and sees the need in the fast-growing area to have coverage at the station for immediate response. “I love being a volunteer and giving back to the community I grew up in. At the same time, I truly see the value in having part-time employees on board. They bring experience and consistency, and everyone — volunteers and staff — can learn and grow from working together,” said Assistant Chief Meyers.

D. Strickland is a volunteer who said that he is excited to see the department launch the new county-supported program. “It’s a great opportunity for all of us to learn from each other, build our skills, and strengthen our response as a team. This is about growing together — volunteers and part-timers alike — to make our VFD and our community’s fire and rescue protection even stronger.”

Ronald Hudson is a longtime volunteer and has seen firsthand the dedication it takes to keep the department running. “Bringing in part-time paid staff isn’t replacing that spirit — it’s strengthening it. They will help us respond faster, train better, and serve our community more effectively. It’s the best of both worlds: professional support and volunteer heart working together,” said Captain Hudson.

Darren Brinkkoeter serves as a Regional Preparedness & Response Chief at the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), which coordinates the state emergency management program. A former Fire Chief of the Canyon Lake Fire Department for several years, Mr. Brinkkoeter now oversees 28 counties in TDEM’s Region 6. “Fire departments in all 254 counties in Texas strive to provide service to the community in a fiscally responsible way. But each county is unique, and I applaud Kendall County and the Bergheim VFD for their partnership to implement a solution that works best to protect and serve the citizens.”

"I believe that this will prove to be beneficial to all who stand to benefit from having stability in staffing of fire engines in the county. The fact that Bergheim is already an established fire department gives us all peace of mind in having responders who follow a set of protocols and practices with equipment and apparatus that are in alignment with our department. I am both hopeful and confident that this will be a step in the right direction.

~ Manny Casarez, Fire Chief, Boerne Fire Department

Over the past four years, Kendall County has had four paid firefighter positions, two to be stationed in Comfort and two stationed in Bergheim, to assist with the growing demand for volunteer firefighters in Kendall County. The program has worked well for the Comfort VFD and Comfort but has needed some improvement. While Comfort VFD would like to continue with a model similar to what is in place, Bergheim VFD feels that a different model would work better for them. We appreciate the court's commitment to provide support in this way for the citizens and visitors of the county.

~ Adam Eichholz, Fire Chief, Comfort VFD

I fully support moving ahead with Bergheim VFD using county funds to hire part-time firefighters for 24-hour coverage in their response area on a trial basis. I feel this would give the program a chance to work out the kinks and be up and running before the start of the new budget year.

~ David Moore, Fire Chief, Kendalia VFD

I would like to express my personal support, not to be construed as a statement on behalf of Sisterdale VFD, for the idea of enhanced coverage in Bergheim, to be accomplished by directing the prorated remainder of Bergheim’s portion of the unused budget for county firefighters to Bergheim VFD, for the purpose of hiring part-time professional firefighters.

"~ Brian Reilly, Fire Chief, Sisterdale VFD.

CORDILLERA RANCH PREFERRED BUILDERS SPRING 2025 TOUR

A CURATED COLLECTION OF EXCEPTIONAL HOMES

Yet again we had another successful and well-attended Cordillera Ranch

Preferred Builders Tour back in April. Our biannual event, showcasing the work of our six talented Preferred Builders, welcomed more than 300 guests to tour eight magnificent homes from The Springs, through the Ranch and into Clubs Village.

Before we get into the details of our recent Spring Tour and look back at all eight homes, here’s a little background on what our Preferred Builders Tour is all about. Every spring and fall, our six Preferred Builders — Paul Allen Custom Homes, Burdick Custom Homes, Garner Homes, Todd Glowka Builder, Lifestyle by Stadler and Pasadera Builder — open the doors to some of the most spectacular homes you’ll find anywhere, with jaw-dropping views and the latest in design trends and technologies. The day gives our visitors not only the opportunity to see the best of the best, but it also provides them with a chance to chat with Preferred Builders, one-on-one, about the dream home they are thinking about building. Following the tour, a Happy Hour is hosted by CR Realty and the Preferred Builders at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Pool where they can unwind, cast a vote for their favorites of the day, continue conversations with our builders, and get a feel for why LIFE IS BETTER OUT HERE as the sun sets over the Texas Hill Country. It’s truly a great day and one we look forward to every year.

NOW — ON TO THE SPRING 2025 TOUR!

While all homes were magnificent, one stood out amongst our guests as the favorite — Paul Allen Custom Homes’ entry at 62 Sierra Point in The Springs. The 5,605-square-foot private estate not only took home the Best Home Award, but it also won the Favorite Kitchen title this go-round. The comfortable and warm, yet sophisticated design was an instant hit with visitors, many remarking how inviting and relaxing the home felt. Well done Paul Allen team!

It wasn’t all one-sided though. The Garner Homes team snagged the Best Outdoor Space title with their model home at 6 Monterey Trail in The Springs. It’s not surprising, with its large putting green, spacious covered patio, summer kitchen and a pool to die for, Garner’s attention to what makes an incredible outdoor living area was rightfully recognized as one of the best many folks said they had ever seen.

Congratulations to both groups on their special recognitions and a HUGE thank you to all six Preferred Builders for their hard work and dedication to making this a must-attend event year after year.

We look forward to seeing what our builders showcase at the Fall 2025 Preferred Builders Tour, and stay tuned for some new and exciting changes coming to the event next October.
