Project Brief The Wichita Institute for Cultural Heritage (WICH) is designed as a multi-use center that includes exhibit spaces, classrooms, housing, and more. Located in Downtown Wichita, the project intends to serve the general public as well as honor local artists of the community. Initial design considerations include incorporating color into the cityscape while still paying homage to the surrounding historic buildings, and also developing a design that could appeal to a wide range of users.

02 THE HAWK

Spring 2022 Hugo Sheward Lawrence, KS

Project Brief The Hawk is a heritage and welcome center for the University of Kansas which could be incorporated onto the campus. The building serves both currently enrolled students and staff, as well as proudly represents the university to those visiting. Being directly on campus, it is also important that the design can integrate well into its surroundings.

Site Selection and Design Approach The site for The Hawk was chosen based on its nearby landmarks such as the Chi Omega Fountain and Potter Lake, as well as due to the foot traffic that it encounters on a daily basis.

View lines were created from the major surrounding landmarks and spaces.

The most prominent features of the site that was selected are its relative size and topography which sloped towards the lake.

Project Brief The Lawrence Discovery Center is designed as a multi-use educational building which can pursue different focused areas. The building’s purpose is to provide learning spaces tailored to both young and older audiences. By incorporating reading nooks, a “kid’s space”, and classrooms to learn new trades, the Lawrence community can benefit and grow from opportunities that would come out of the project.

Site Analysis with Project

Site Conditions This project is located directly next to railroad tracks as well as the Kansas River, making sound an important site condition to consider in design. In wanting to pursue a more educational approach for the Lawrence community, designated spaces such as the children’s center could serve to teach about the deliverance of goods and train systems.

Methods of buffering the sound are utilized around the site but still give way for a learning experience about the tracks and river.

Design Approach A community space requires welcoming zones to interact with.

Having sufficient natural lighting and view points are important aspects when designing the learning spaces.

The balance of lighting helps promote a healthy environment without having excessive lighting obstruct classroom work.

Description Beginning with a quilt pattern, the project objective was to extrude the given design to form a 3D model. The process is meant to enhance and develop students’ model making skills while also having them explore basic design possibilities.
