The Hawk

01 THE HAWK

The task for this project was to design a heritage and welcome center for the University of Kansas which could be incorporated onto the campus. The building is meant to serve both currently enrolled students and staff, as well as proudly represent the university to those visiting. Being directly on campus, it also important that the design can integrate well into its surroundings.

Site Selection

Site topography, forces, and selection

The location of the project was decided by each individual student. The site for The Hawk was chosen based on it’s nearby landmarks such as the Chi Omega Fountain and Potter Lake, as well as due to the foot traffic that it encounters on a daily basis.

The most prominent features of the site that was selected are its relative size and topography which sloped towards the lake.

Design Approach

Original Diagramming

In order to form a base for the welcome center, view lines were created from the major surrounding landmarks and spaces. This resulted in a shape that was formed around the site and would eventually be further developed into its final Earlyform. on, the plan was split into two masses which would serve different purposes with a main central structure.

The sculpture itself unifies the separate buildings and is also a shading device to those passing through.

Sculptural Overhang for Center

Early Concept Sketches

After establishing the two “wings” of the entire structure, the central piece had to be constructed. The open center between the masses serves as a communal rest space where students can study, look out into Potter Lake, or enjoy their coffees.

Intentional Elements

Floor 01 Floor 02

Several elements were incorporated into the building design to better integrate it into the site. Slanted roofs were used to not only guide rain and snow loads towards large garden spaces at the Northern and Southern ends. In addition, the usage of curtain walls and division of spaces emphasize openness to the community.

CENTERDISCOVERYLAWRENCE

The project program was to design a multi-use educational building which can pursue different focused areas. The Lawrence Discovery Center’s purpose is to provide learning spaces tailored to both young and older audiences. By incorporating reading nooks, a “kid’s space”, and classrooms to learn new trades, the Lawrence community can benefit and grow from opportunities that would come out of the project.

Design Approach

By having relatively open spaces to the public, visitors have the opportunity to utilize the building’s facilities without interrupting classes that could be occurring in a private room simultaneously.

Early Interior Analysis

A community space requires welcoming zones to interact with. Having sufficient natural lighting and view points was an important aspect when designing the learning spaces. The balance of lighting helps promote a healthy environment without having excessive lighting obstruct classroom work.

Description

Without digital construction, the Burcham Park Observation Tower was solely composed of physical models and illustrations. Prior to knowing how to operate a laser cutter, the wooden structure proved to be a test of strength and patience. From simple partis to the final model, the tower underwent several alterations with a special focus on the interior.

03 Model Making 101 Observation Tower

Beginning with a quilt pattern, the project objective was to extrude the given design and form a 3D model out of it. The process is meant to enhance and develop students’ model making skills while also having them explore basic design possibilities.
