50 YEARS OF COPPER MOUNTAIN

Although one of the younger mountains on the map in Colorado, Copper Mountain has exercised dominance in the industry for 50 years, making its mark as a skier’s mountain with its unrivaled terrain layout and community of dedicated individuals committed to the mountain’s success. In 1971, the U.S. Forest Service conducted a study of the diverse terrain that makes up Copper Mountain. From the study came recognition that “If there were a mountain that had terrain for skiing it would be Copper Mountain. It is probably the most outstanding potential ski area in the Arapahoe National Forest, and possibly Colorado.” Officially opened on Dec. 5, 1972, the resort has continued to prioritize themes of sport progression, guest experience, environmental stewardship, and employee engagement over five decades. Chuck Lewis was the original visionary for the mountain. His effort and vision led to the creation of the original runs and early chairlifts, as well as the mountain community that emerged on the valley floor. Over time, modern improvements, new developments, and terrain expansions have continued to differentiate Copper Mountain amongst a landscape of worldrenowned destinations.

50 YEARS OF COPPER MOUNTAIN

Before the current days of Copper Mountain, the surrounding mountain landscape once played host to mining ambitions. It wasn’t until 1952 that the U.S. Forest Service recognized the potential for the mountain. Copper Mountain originally opened to the public on Dec. 5, 1972, with 5 chairlifts, 22 runs, totaling over 26 miles of skiable terrain. Copper expanded quickly across the front face of the mountain and eventually onto the backside of Union Peak into Copper Bowl and Tucker Mountain. 50 years later the resort now boasts 23 lifts with access to 155 trails and 2,507 acres of terrain.

PLAY FOREVER

PLAY FOREVER INITIATIVES

As part of Copper Mountain’s Play Forever commitment, the resort’s initiatives for the 2022/23 winter season are focused on reducing the resort’s environmental impact and providing financial support to local community organizations.

BottleLoop: Copper is working alongside PepsiCo to help circulate aluminum and plastic back into Pepsi’s supply chain through BottleLoop. Copper will add two additional recycling bins to its recycling stations around the resort. There will now be an aluminum only and plastic bottle only recycle bin. Pepsi is working alongside Replenysh, a collection company, to help circulate recycled materials through closed loop recycling to help eliminate downcycling.

Soil Sequestration Study: After launching the resort’s Native Seed Collection program to gather and distribute seeds on the disturbed areas of the mountain, Copper Mountain is now taking step to increase its understanding of its impacts on the environment through a Soil Sequestration Study. The study is being conducted with students from Southwestern University and will focus on the health of Copper’s ski slopes and is part of a 10-year plan to transform the mountain’s biodiversity.

Ball Aluminum Cups: After introducing Ball Aluminum cups to the resort last season, Copper is once again bringing back a sustainable drinkware option for to-go beverages in its restaurants and dining locations. In addition to 16 oz. cups, Copper has added 12oz. and 18oz. Branded aluminum cups to accommodate different beverage sizes. Aluminum is a highly sustainable material, allowing the cups to be reused and recycled over and over again without losing their quality or value.

Play Forever Community Giving: After three years of successfully donating over $318,000 to the community through Play Forever Giving programs, Copper Mountain is excited for another season of giving with the return of Play Forever Thursdays. Guests that purchase a $99 discounted lift ticket online and in advance for a select Thursday between Jan. 5 and April 6 will have a portion of proceeds benefit a partner organization. This season, Copper is partnering with 17 non-profits.

CONVERSATIONS AND SUCCESS IN CONSERVATION

COPPER MOUNTAIN HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS AN INDUSTRY LEADER IN SUSTAINABILITY

Copper Conservation Summit: In July 2022, with the support of the National Ski Area Association, Copper hosted a Conservation Summit which brought together resorts from Colorado and Utah, land management companies and conservation industry organizations to discuss and educate one another on individual sustainability initiatives. This was an incredible opportunity to observe and celebrate the commitment and unification of the ski industry to combat climate change and Copper Mountain looks forward to hosting more opportunities to collaborate in the future.

NSAA Sustainable Slopes Badges: Over the past few seasons, Copper Mountain has been awarded badges as part of the NSAA’s Sustainable Slopes program, acknowledging the resort’s ongoing efforts to improve and meet our sustainability goals across Copper’s operations. Copper has previously been awarded the Climate Action, Climate Advocacy, Design & Construction, Water Management, and Education & Outreach badges. As of this season, Copper has been awarded the Forest Health & Habitat badge. The badge was achieved through Copper’s efforts in establishing a seed collection program, its stream restoration project along Ten Mile Creek, and its yearly planting of 300 disease resistant trees on disturbed locations on the mountain. Copper Mountain is one of three resorts to be awarded the most badges in the program.
