The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) provides reference data and information on the physical and biogeochemical state, variability and dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems for the global ocean and the European regional seas. Products are free of charge and open to all, accessible via marine.copernicus.eu.

BLUERISE: OCEAN THERMAL ENERGY RESOURCE ANALYSIS

Covering seventy percent of our globe, the oceans are the world largest solar collectors. This solar energy is captured as heat in the upper layers of the oceans. From the natural temperature difference that exists between the upper and deep layers of the ocean, energy can be extracted. This is called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and is in particular of interest in the tropics where it can be instrumental in helping islands and coastal regions in achieving a sustainable future. It is considered among the biggest renewable energy sources. Using the ocean database of Copernicus Marine Service, Bluerise in collaboration with TU Delft, has evaluated the year round and ten year average ocean characteristics in the Caribbean analyzing the ocean currents, density and temperature profiles over depth. Particular attention was spent on ocean upwelling and seasonal fluctuations. Bluerise has developed a model, using the data from the Copernicus Marine Service, to analyze oceanographic features such as natural ocean current patterns and their variability relevant for OTEC. This enables a quick assessment of the feasibility of OTEC locations.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is a renewable electricity source that uses the natural temperature difference in tropical oceans between the surface water and deep water. The technology can transform a temperature difference of 20 °C or more into clean, reliable, and predictable base load electricity.

Tropical regions, with population centers near the coast, have ideal conditions to deploy OTEC technology to fully meet their rapidly growing energy needs. Although tropical regions currently account for less than 30% of the current global energy demand, the tropics will become the most significant energy market within the next 20 years.

Ten years of data from the Global Ocean Model with a spatial resolution of 1/12 degree and temporal resolution of one day is applied. This enables a quick assessment of the feasibility of OTEC locations.

COMBINING DESALINISATION AND WAVE ENERGY FARMS

Wavepiston has been working on wave energy since 2006. The Danish company aims to create sustainable and affordable devices to harness the vast potential of ocean waves. Currently demonstrating its prototype off the coast of Denmark, the team plans on deploying another device in the Mediterranean.

Wavepiston is developing devices using wave energy to produce electricity and power desalinisation plants. Selecting a test site is a crucial step for wave energy companies as wave energy converters are often optimized for a specific wave climate.

Resource assessment is thus one of the first phases of any ocean energy project. Using Copernicus Marine Service data, Wavepiston was able to perform quick assessments of the feasibility of wave sites in the North Sea and the Mediterranean. During the R and D phase, running power production simulations is necessary to validate the models used by the company. The Copernicus Marine wave data allowed Wavepiston to conduct potential power generation simulations on given project sites.

Estimates of potential production from wave energy vary, but all agree that the size of the prize is significant from 4.000 TWh/year (Cruz 2008) to 29.500 TWh/year (IPCC 2011). As a benchmark, Europe consumes around 3.000 TWh/year. Wave energy can provide utility scale power production. It also has applications for remote islands replacing expensive and polluting diesel-powered production. Furthermore, wave energy can power onshore and offshore industries such as fish farms, oil and gas platforms and desalinisation plants.

Planet OS is a private company that provides big data infrastructure for industry to help them transform the way data-driven decisions are made. Planet OS has gathered environmental data from various sources, including the Copernicus Marine Service, in order to provide with met-oceanic information to various industry sectors: construction and management of offshore structures (e.g. offshore wind farms), development of port and harbour related structures, shipping industry, surfers and wave energy. Within the Open OS Datahub, data access to wave model product is simplified. Indeed, in practice, wave model data is difficult to access due to strange file formats, and there is very little information about the difference between the models. Using Planet OS Datahub, user can simply compare datasets by reviewing their detail pages, and get access to the data with a standard API call.

From local wind-induced waves to swell waves originating from distant weather systems, wave models provide critical information about our seas and oceans. Wave information is useful for the construction and management of offshore structures (e.g. offshore wind farms) to plan the expected resilience of offshore structures that are constantly influenced by the force of water. It could also be used for the development of port and harbour related structures as historical wave data is significant for building structures. The Shipping industry is also concerned by waves for large cargo ships to small yachts. Finally, it has been predicted that wave energy will have great potential in the future.

MET-OCEAN STUDIES AND KEY ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS FOR FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND TECHNOLOGY CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Floating wind turbines are an up-and-coming technology that can be installed in deeper and very windy water far from the shore.

French Mediterranean coast is particularly well suited to the development of this renewable offshore energy source. In 2016, the French government has selected a pilot floating wind farm project called EFGL (Eoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion), conducted by joint venture comprised of ENGIE, EDP Renewables, Caisse des Dépôts, Eiffage, Principle Power and GE. Located 16 km off the coast of Leucate and Le Barcarès, EFGL project includes 4 GE Haliade TM 150-6MW turbines with semisubmersible floaters designed by Principle Power (Aix-en-Provence) and built by Eiffage Métal (Fos-sur-Mer). NOVELTIS, a private service company in oceanography contracted by ENGIE will perform the metocean study and define environmental parameters at the wind farm location for offshore site characterization. These inputs are required for both engineering and environmental studies.

NOVELTIS uses CMEMS ocean model temperature and salinity from 1955 up to 2015 to build a statistical analysis of the oceanic circulation patterns of the area.

ESTIMATING WAVE ENERGY RESOURCES IN THE NORTH AEGEAN ARCHIPELAGO CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

North Aegean Sea is a relatively rich region for wave energy resource. Although average wave heights ranges in low levels, wind regimes and Aegean geomorphology create frequent waves.

On a seasonal basis, the maximum mean wave power occur in winter. Local winds from the North West can make a significant contribution to renewable wave energy production during the summer season. The scope of the present study is first to identify feasible locations to deploy potential Wave Energy Farms in the North Aegean Sea and then to propose for sustainable water and energy solutions to remote island communities. A method of Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) was developed using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. Handling multiple conflicting criteria, the area was designed taking into consideration protected areas, military exercising areas, marine routes etc.. The Copernicus Marine Service wave model in the Mediterranean Sea was used to get an estimation of the wave energy. Results showed that the Skyros island is the most suitable island for the development of a wave energy farm.

All islands in the North Aegean Archipelago face water and energy related issues due to limited sources and obsolete infrastructure.

Problems are more intensive during the summer mass tourism that increases population up to 700%. Import of fossil fuels and water from mainland results into increased costs and management problems. Islands obtain their electricity primarily from diesel generators, providing five time more expensive electricity than on mainland. In the case of water, the resources are quite restricted and expensive. Overexploitation of groundwater resources, through illegal boreholes, causes coastal erosion and soil salinization.

MET-OCEAN CONDITIONS FOR THE BIMEP MARINE RENEWABLE ENERGY TEST SITE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

BiMEP test site and IHCantabria Research Institute collaborate within the 'TRL+' project which final objective is to develop innovative tools supporting marine renewable energy developers from a conceptual to a real farm (http://trlplus.com/). 'TRL+' is a spanish national research project (RTC-2015-3836-3) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO). BiMEP test site is an open sea area in front of the coast of Armintza (Basque Country), where renewable marine energy devices are set up for testing the harnessing of energy from renewable marine sources. BiMEP and IH Cantabria have developed a Prediction System which objective is to forecast wind, wave, currents and sea level conditions to be considered in the planning of marine operations at BiMEP. In addition, the Prediction System feeds the Decision Support System to be developed in 'TRL+' project http://dss.trlplus.com/. The Copernicus Marine Service physics and wave models for the Iberia-Biscay-Irish area are used as forcing conditions in the very high resolution model developed in the TRL+ project.

The Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) is an open-sea facility to support research, technical testing and commercial demonstration of pre-commercial prototype utility-scale floating Marine Renewable Energy Devices. The site was found to offer favourable wave conditions for the testing of devices and relatively low exposure to potentially damaging extreme waves.

The site is located 1.7 km from the coast of Arminza, Basque Country, Northern Spain, in the Atlantic Ocean between 50 and 90 m water depth. The Prediction System developed here aims at forecasting wind, wave, currents and sea level conditions to be considered in the planning of marine operations at BiMEP.

The 'TRL+' project and associated Decision Support System uses the Copernicus Marine Service physics (5km resolution) and wave models (10 km resolution) in the Iberian Biscay Irish geographical area. They are used as a boundary condition to feed the very high resolution (50 m) model developed in the project.

SEAWATER AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

DEPROFUNDIS is specialised in SWAC systems. SWAC (Sea-water air conditioning) aka DWSC (Deep water source cooling) is an innovative and ecological Air Conditioning technology which uses the renewable source of cold oceanic water. It is particularly fitted to islands in the tropical belt where air conditioning is needed and where a vast reservoir of cold oceanic water is available close by.

Deep cold sea water is pumped to the surface and passes through a heat exchange system to cool down the air conditioning network. The pumped water is finally released back into the ocean. Adrien Depaillat from DEPROFUNDIS testifies that "CMEMS temperature fields from ocean models and in-situ observations are crucial for our business in order to qualify the potential for SWAC around the world. SUPPORT TO EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES FOR DEEP SEA MINING CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

SAGRES Project is an innovative and disruptive approach developed by ISQ that focus on the conception and validation of an algorithm that supports decision to prospection and exploration (P&E) activities related with deep sea mineral (DSM) resources based on satellite information, and complemented by in-situ data, including CMEMS data. The fusion and analysis of these data can be used as approximation vectors towards mineralization in order to enhance location, delineation and ranking of potential P&E target areas related with the occurrence of DSM resources such as manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, and seafloor massive sulphide deposits. By using this approach, SAGRES Project expects to increase P&E discovery success rates, optimize campaigns time, reduce P&E uncertainty and costs, and provide baseline information related to the environmental impact of this activity. The preliminary and ongoing results are very promising, and show for several areas considered in the North Atlantic Ocean a significant forecast capacity performed by the algorithm.

In the case of cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, the algorithm results show 77% of certainty in its forecasted capability. The distribution of the algorithm predicted points are in good agreement with the depth range considered appropriated for the economically viable occurrence of cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. The SAGRES Project ongoing approach can therefore contribute to smarter ocean exploration missions.

CMEMS model about the ocean physical, chemical and biological parameters together with other satellite and in-situ data are used.

For instance, the provision of data on temperature, salinity, and concentration of oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and chlorophyll in sea water at several depth ranges and fairly high resolution grids are important to better constraint and enhance the forecast capability of the SAGRES Project algorithm.

A SYSTEM FOR PREDICTING GLOBAL AND REGIONAL TIDAL CURRENTS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

NOVELTIS is a private French service company specialized in space, environment, sustainable development and technological innovations. The company has developed a global and regional tidal currents prediction system called TIPS targeting the Marine Renewable Energy sector and its tidal turbines. NOVELTIS has built a regional tidal model that uses Data Assimilation Techniques to incorporate satellite and in-situ observations into their model.

This technique can be used to correct the NOVELTIS ocean model to be closer to observed conditions and to improve forecasting accuracy. The NOVELTIS data assimilation system uses Satellite Sea Level data from the Copernicus Marine Service and uses in-situ observed Sea Level data, also from the Copernicus Marine Service, to validate the results. F. Jeliazovski from NOVELTIS says that "Satellite Sea Level data from the Copernicus Marine Service are a great asset for our tidal system as this allows our tidal model to be as close as possible to real ocean conditions".

TIDAL ENERGY ASSESSMENT - TIDEA

To date, there is no global solution providing a first level of information for ocean renewable energy site assessments for tidal energy devices (tidal current speed, tidal elevation, tidal power).

NOVELTIS has developed a unique solution to provide this information: TidEA, Tidal Energy Assessment. TidEA is a free of charge decision-making tool to identify the most suitable sites for the development of tidal energy and also to characterize in detail the resource of the various sites of interest through the provision of relevant indicators calculated by NOVELTIS teams and validated using products (in situ data, elevation data) provided by the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS, marine.copernicus.eu). TiDEA lists all the worldwide coastal regions and offers data up to 100 meters deep. For each selected site, you will find the maximum current speeds, the power density and the indicators of occurrence of some specific speed thresholds. TidEA is used by different types of end-users : NAVAL GROUP and SABELLA for the tidal energy project development and KRAKEN SUBSEA for their business development.

The Copernicus Marine Service ocean products provide key input for such technologies, as they can be used to help estimate the ocean energy resources available and select the most interesting areas to develop the tidal energy projects in the world.

VALIDATION OF HYDRODYNAMIC MODELS FOR COASTAL APPLICATIONS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

GLOBOCEAN develops tools and services for Oil & Gas, Coastal Engineering and Renewable Energy applications. For example, Met-Ocean dashboards (i.e. dashboards combining information about both meteorological and oceanic conditions) combining data from various sources are developed, in order to contribute to the study and monitoring of specific sites. Moreover, fine scale ocean models are developed to better comprehend the complexity of such specific areas. Hafedh Hajji from GLOBOCEAN says that "CMEMS satellite products such as sea level altimetry products are key information for validating our ocean models".

WELLO - WAVE RESOURCE ASSESSMENT AND COST OF ENERGY WORLD MAP CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Wello started designing wave energy converters in 2008. Its devices called Penguins are unique in the wave energy landscape.

The asymmetrical shape of their hull creates a gyrating motion which pushes a rotating mass inside the device with each passing wave. The converter turns it into electrical power, immediately transferred to the grid by a sub-sea cable. Wello is also one of the first wave energy companies to develop a project outside of Europe. With its 10 MW capacity, the Nusa Lembongan site in Indonesia is currently the largest in-the-works wave-energy park in the world. Copernicus Marine Service product: Global Ocean Waves Analysis and Forecast updated Daily, provides precious wave data to optimize Wello's activity.

Wello expects to reduce the costs of its Penguin by 30% by 2020.

Wello has been using Copernicus Marine Service's data to develop its Indonesian project. The global coverage allowed the Finnish company to get wave data for remote locations and perform both resource assessments and production simulations thanks to our product: Global Ocean Waves Analysis and Forecast updated Daily.

Wello also used our product to design a world map showing the price of electricity produced by its devices in each suitable location on the globe.
