BLUEFIN TUNA MONITORING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

SOCIB (Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System) and IEO (INSTITUTO ESPAÑOL DE OCEANOGRAFÍA) have developed a habitat model for predicting spawning distribution of Atlantic Bluefin tuna in the Western Mediterranean. The Atlantic Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is an emblematic top predator species classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Bluefin tuna populations are subject to fishing under the supervision of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

Observed data for larvae location are incorporated in a predictive system of the habitat model forced by operational oceanographic products from the Copernicus Marine Service such as satellite altimetry and chlorophyll as well as sea surface temperature and salinity from hydrodynamic models for forecasting the Bluefin tuna habitats. Diego Alvarez from SOCIB says that "Copernicus Marine Service satellite and model products are key inputs for our Bluefin tuna habitat model as its development and migration are strongly linked to temperature and ocean currents respectively."

DEVELOPING AFRICA'S CAPACITY IN FISHERY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT WITH MESA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Monitoring of Environment and Security in Africa programme (MESA) builds on the results obtained in PUMA and AMESD and will be a first contribution to the GMES and Africa Initiative.

Launched in 2012, MESA will run until 2018 and received funding of EUR 37 million from the European Union. Beneficiary Countries of MESA program are 48 ACP countries of five African Regions, namely CEMAC, ECOWAS, IGAD, IOC and SADC. In particular, MESA propose 2 new services in the ECOWAS region (West African States), namely support to fishery resource management and forecasting of ocean conditions. Copernicus Marine Service's contribution to this project consists of the provision ocean model and satellite products for both services (Sea Surface Temperature and Currents, Ocean Colour data, In Situ data for validation) which allow the publication of monthly bulletins including maps of potential fishing zones and oceanic conditions. It benefits to fishermen and policy makers to better manage fishery resources along the western African coast.

The MESA programme was proposed through the Ouagadougou Declaration signed in September 2010 by the African Union Commission, the ACP Secretariat and the African Regional Economic Communities. The aim of the programme is to ensure continuity of past investments on the use of Earth Observation data in Africa (e.g. PUMA and AMESD) and to provide an initial contribution to the GMES and Africa Initiative, which was called upon through the Maputo Declaration in October 2006 and included in the Joint EU-Africa Strategy as of December 2007.

Beneficiary Countries of MESA program are 48 ACP countries of five African Regions, namely CEMAC, ECOWAS, IGAD, IOC and SADC.

DOWNSTREAMING SERVICES OF CMEMS DATA THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

ODYSSEA is a user-centred project aiming to make Mediterranean marine data easily accessible and operational to a broad range of multiple end-users operating in the Mediterranean Sea. ODYSSEA aims to develop, operate and demonstrate an interoperable and cost-effective platform, integrating data received from various networks of observing and forecasting systems across the Mediterranean basin, while producing its own data through monitoring and modelling systems installed at a network of Observatories. The project adopts an end-user centered approach, in which the various groups of end-users and stakeholders, within and external to the Consortium, will be involved from the beginning of the project in the design, development and operation of the platform. End-user requirements will drive all tailored and packaged services provided by ODYSSEA platform. To facilitate the engagement of end-users and to promote the downstreaming and dissemination of marine data at Observatory level, a mock-up platform was designed and developed by DUTH, using social media (Facebook, Twitter). CMEMS data as well as data from other data providers (NOAA, Metar) were retrieved.

After the first six months of project implementation, a community of active end-users has started to develop along the Mediterranean Sea. More than 1,000 people are following ODYSSEA facebook pages and about 5,000 people receive daily posts with CMEMS data. Presently, in Greece we cover three broad areas (Thracian Sea, Thermaikos Gulf and Eastern Evoia) and seven point locations with specific end-users interest. In Egypt in collaboration with the NGO RAED we cover the Abu Qir bay. In Tunisia in collaboration with the NGO ANDDCSV we cover the Gulf of Gabes. In Thermaikos Gulf, we estimate that 400 tn of mussels were saved from massive deaths during the July 2017 heat wave.

ODYSSEA Facebook and Twitter apps use various CMEMS products, as operational forecasts from models, satellite re-analysis products and in situ RT-NRT data. The products used cover the whole Mediterranean basin and a broad range of physical, chemical and biological parameters. We retrieve CMEMS data and combine them with data from other platforms to produce synthetic diagrams and explanatory texts and inform end-users on conditions at sea and weather (present and forecasted).

The ODYSSEA project is formed of a consortium of 28 partners from 14 countries, six of which are non-EU (Middle East and North Africa). The project is coordinated by Democritus Unversity of Thrace, Greece. ODYSSEA will support the implementation of EU Mediterranean Sea policy and other frameworks, such as the BLUEMED and Marine Knowledge 2020 initiatives, the Framework for Ocean Observing.

FINDING SUSTAINABLE LOCATIONS FOR GROWING RAINBOW TROUT IN THE BALTIC SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Almost 95 per cent of the fish farmed for food in Finland is rainbow trout. The Natural Resource Institute Finland (Luke) has used Copernicus Marine Data to build an ecosystem approach for aquaculture. Nutrient discharge from fish farming may cause local eutrophication. Based on a finnish national spatial planning for aquaculture, the farming of food fish is directed towards suitable water areas that take account of the environment and other users like summer cottage-based activities. The guiding principle is that a new fish farm must not endanger the achievement of water management goals and environmental targets set for the area in question. In particular, offshore areas in the Gulf of Bothnia are expected to offer new opportunities for growth of aquaculture.

Copernicus Marine data is used to allocate sustainable locations for growing rainbow trout in the marine environment. The approach uses at the moment 11 different criteria and Copernicus offers input data for two of them.

Almost 95 per cent of the fish farmed for food in Finland is rainbow trout. Domestic, farmed fish is a healthy and safe choice for the consumer. According to recommendations, people should consume a variety of fish, combining both farmed and naturally caught fish. Food production is largely based on the egg production of selectively bred fish. Luke maintains and develops breeding programmes for rainbow trout and European whitefish.

Selective breeding produces high-quality rearing material (egg, fry and broodfish) for fish farming. More than 80 per cent of domestic rainbow trout retailed in Finland originates in Luke's breeding programmes.

HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOM MONITORING FOR AQUACULTURE FARMS IN IRELAND CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The Marine Institute in Ireland releases weekly Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) bulletins to prevent toxin related aquaculture farm closures. The Marine Institute in Ireland is the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for marine biotoxins. Aquaculture farms around Ireland are subject to water pollution by diarrhetic shellfish poisoning toxins. The Irish Marine Institute, in the framework of the ASIMUTH project, publishes weekly bulletins based on in-situ HAB observations, the results of a hydrodynamical model downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service, and in-situ and satellite data from the Copernicus Marine Service. Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. During toxic algae blooms, the high-resolution local model forecast is a useful tool for predicting the risk of aquaculture farm harvesting closures.

Tomasz Dabrowski from the Irish Marine Institute says that "the Copernicus Marine Service global model provides accurate ocean current forecasts around Ireland for downscaling into higher resolution local models."

HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOM MONITORING FOR AQUACULTURE FARMS IN SPAIN CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

INSTITUTO ESPAÑOL DE OCEANOGRAFÍA (IEO) has developed a proof-of-concept Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) monitoring system to prevent toxin-related closures of aquaculture farms.

Aquaculture farms along the Spanish and Galician Atlantic coast are subject to water pollution by toxins. IEO has developed the publication of bulletins based on in-situ HAB observations, hydrodynamical models downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service, and in-situ and satellite data from the Copernicus Marine Service, supplemented with IEO in-situ data. Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. During toxic algae blooms, the high-resolution local model forecast is a useful tool for predicting the risk of aquaculture farm harvesting closures. IEO says that "the Copernicus Marine Service Iberian-Biscay-Irish Sea model provides accurate ocean currents forecasts along the Spanish Atlantic coast for downscaling into higher resolution local models."

LOCATING THE CLOSEST LEGAL FISHING GROUND

HeraSpace helps fishermen to locate the closest legal fishing ground, optimizing their operative budgets. HeraSpace is a multi winning award British startup which has showcased a unique tracking fish distributions system. HeraSpace uses oceanographic data among which Copernicus satellite and Copernicus Marine Service global ocean model, crowd-sourcing and a top-notch neural machine learning neural network. HeraSpace adapts to the variabilities in the fish distributional patterns (provoked by anomalies in the climate) by applying accurate updated ocean friendly patterns and artificial intelligence. HeraSpace proposes building an adaptive intelligent service based on the latest publically funded satellite missions which shall result in optimizing resources consumption and as a consequence reducing the greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. HeraSpace supports sustainable fisheries management practices and the recovery of fish stocks. Transparency thought the whole process is guaranteed with blockchain technology, the same that is used for cutting-edge electronic currency like Bitcoin.

Combining Copernicus satellite data with actual fishing data, fishing routes and selection could eventually be drastically improved. Particularly interesting are the features aimed at supporting sustainable exploitation of ocean resources.

MANAGEMENT OF FISH INVASIVE SPECIES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

An Invasive fish species from the Suez Canal (silvercheeked toad-fish Lagocephalus sceleratus) has rapidly colonised the eastern Mediterranean basin and is currently moving westwards. It puts at risk the fishery management in the Mediterranean Sea as it has a highly opportunistic behaviour, it attacks fish captured in nets and lines, seriously damages fishing gears and catch and is a highly-toxic species with no immediate economic value for the Mediterranean market. Researchers from ISTI-CNR with funding from the H2020 BlueBridge project have produced an overall habitat suitability map and an effective geographical spread map for L. sceleratus at Mediterranean scale by using cloud computing-based algorithms to merge seven machine learning approaches. Data from (i) the AquaMaps Consortium, (ii) the Copernicus Marine Environment monitoring service, and (iii) the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are used. The study suggests that without an intervention, L. sceleratus will continue its rapid spread and will likely have a high impact on fisheries.

The Lessepsian migration is the migration of marine species across the Suez Canal, usually from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, and more rarely in the opposite direction.

When the canal was completed in 1869, fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine animals and plants were exposed to an artificial passage between the two naturally separate bodies of water, and cross-contamination was made possible between formerly isolated ecosystems. The phenomenon, still occurring today, is named after Ferdinand de Lesseps, the French diplomat in charge of the canal's construction. This migration presents a significant concern to the fisheries industry in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

OCEANOGRAPHY EXPLORATION TOOL TO SUPPORT FISHERIES MANAGEMENT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Metocean parameters affecting ecological processes (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll) are crucial in sustainable fisheries assessment and management. They are needed both for operations at sea (i.e cruise campaign design & rerouting) and stock recruitment (i.e defining spawning grounds). Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) in collaboration with the Balearic Islands Coastal Ocean Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) have developed a web-based tool integrating in a single operation screen a quick access to ocean data (from satellite, in situ and models) to monitor and forecast hydrodynamic, chemical and biological conditions in the Balearic Sea. This oceanography exploration tool is meant to support the design of sampling campaigns and the integration of environmental information into assessment and management processes. This tool will be used for sustainable fishery management in the Balearic Islands with a particular focus on endangered species such as the Bluefin Tuna.

Several products from the Copernicus Marine Service are used to build this tool, including ocean model, satellite and insitu data.

OFFSHORE AQUACULTURE SYSTEMS FOR SALMON FARMING CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Fish farming is an efficient way of producing food. Sixty-two percent of fish food shall come from aquaculture by 2030.

Norwegian Fjords, and the European coasts in general, are already full and can not host anymore aquaculture farms. Maritime Spatial Planning is advising fish farmers to further develop offshore.

Hence, there is a need to find new aquaculture farm sites offshore.

The Copernicus Marine Service data can support new aquaculture farms siting and licensing, thanks to available marine data such as temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, ocean currents and waves.

For example, Offtek AS has used the Copernicus data to develop an aquaculture SubSea project offshore Portugal, Aveiro. Salmon farming require specific oceanic conditions and Copernicus data have been used to check where optimal water temperatures up to 14/16 Degree Celcius, adequate oxygen levels, not too strong but strong enough currents and waves can be found offshore Portugal. Such offshore site are very innovative as they for example allows to avoid sea lice problems.

World fish consumption per capita has doubled since 1960s, and now, half of the fishs are produced by aquaculture. The world population is growing rapidly and aquaculture is one of the ways of transforming energy from feed to plate. The natural production of the ocean can not be enhanced artificially. Aquaculture, the fastest growing food industry in the world, can partly take over and by 2030 it could be producing most of the fish we eat. New aquaculture sites need to be found and the Copernicus Marine data supports the resource assessment of those new sites.

PREDICTING THE HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION OF GIANT SQUID CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Architeuthis dux belongs to the family of giant squids which are difficult to observe in the nature. Very little is known about their habitat and worlwide distribution in the oceans. Predicting the habitat and distribution of this species is important from a biological conservation perspective. Researchers from ISTI-CNR with funding from the H2020 BlueBridge project have developed an approach to estimate the potential distribution of A. dux at global scale, with relative high resolution (1-degree). They have developed a so-called "niche model" that estimates species distribution and have become widely used in conservation biology.

Their approach relies on a complex preparation phase, which improves the reliability of presence, absence and environmental data correlated to the species habitat. The datasets come from several sources among which the Copernicus Marine Service Global model mass concentration of chlorophyll and nitrates.

Results show that their approach gives good estimate of the distribution of A. dux. They also explain how their approach can be generalized and extended to other rare species.

The giant squid (genus Architeuthis) is a deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae. Giant squid can grow to a tremendous size due to deep-sea gigantism: recent estimates put the maximum size at 13 m for females and 10 m for males from the posterior fins to the tip of the two long tentacles. The number of different giant squid species has been debated, but recent genetic research suggests that only one species exists. In 2004, Japanese researchers took the first images of a live giant squid in its natural habitat, and in July 2012, a live adult was first filmed in its natural habitat.

SARDINE MONITORING ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST

INSTITUTO ESPAÑOL DE OCEANOGRAFÍA (IEO) has developed a habitat model for predicting spawning distribution of Sardine along the European Atlantic coast. Sardine catches have been decreasing regularly since 1980 and an assessment of the stock is needed. IEO has developed a modelling suite involving hydrodynamical models and ecological models and ending in an advection and dispersion model for Sardine eggs and larvae. The ROMS high-resolution hydrodynamical model is downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service Iberian-Biscay-Irish Sea model.

Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. Manuel Ruiz from the IEO says that "The Copernicus Marine Service model is a key input for our Sardine habitat model as a reliable boundary condition for hydrodynamical information".

SHELLFISH MONITORING FOR THE AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

The RAIA observatory (Observatorio Oceanográfica da Marxe Ibérica, http://www.marnaraia.org) and MeteoGalicia release bulletins covering the Galicia area for the aquaculture industry to help fish farmers in their business planning. They have developed a modelling suite, ranging from hydrodynamical to ecological models. The high-resolution hydrodynamical model is downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service Global Ocean 1/12° Sea model. Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. The bulletin provides useful water quality information for the day-to-day management of aquaculture farms.

SKYFISH: WATER QUALITY MONITORING TOOL

SkyFISH service informs users on the availability of the fish resources and the sustainability of these resources in the Black Sea. This service is targeting the aquaculture, fishery, coastal management and conservation activities in the public and private sectors. The main objective of this service is to develop a user-friendly platform based mainly on satellite derived and modeled information, suitable for identification of the most favourable fishing and aquaculture areas in the Black Sea Romanian coastal waters. The SkyFISH platform is a web-based service that can be used by the end-users as a decision support tool for finding the most favorable fishing zones or analyze the suitability of specific areas for aquaculture activities and monitoring of the existing ones. It takes full advantage of the multiple Earth Observation resources available through Copernicus Marine and its oceanic parameters.

SUPPORT TO FISH FARMER DECISION MAKING

Webstep is developing predictive models and business simulator to support decision making in fish farming in European seas. Based on data from the Copernicus Marine Service, Webstep designs predictive statistical models that allow predicting future temperature for specific areas. Sea temperature plays an important role on fish production due to the sea temperature effects on fish mortality rate, average maturation time of the fish, and average harvested weight of the fish. Since temperature is a natural phenomenon with a strong seasonality component, predictive models can yield good predictions of future temperatures. In addition, these models can serve as an input for a Business simulator. It is a methodology taking data as an input, and based on a series of assumptions, producing a corresponding outcome. It helps answering WHAT IF questions, as for example: What will happen to a given salmon population development if the sea temperature increases by 2° C?. When combined with predictive modeling, a business simulator can support fish farming decision makers with the impact future events might have in their business.

The Daithi O Murchu Marine Research Station, DOMMRS, is Ireland first privately-owned, independent, commercial research centre.

DOMMRS has a wide variety of onshore and marine facilities, and works across a range of areas, from sustainable energy to aquaculture, from fisheries to waste solutions. The station is currently involved in 7 EU-funded projects, as well as Irish national and privately-funded contracts, to which Copernicus Marine Service data provisions (observed and modelled) are key.

Indicators and tools collecting data from various sources such as the Ocean Colour and Sea Surface Temperature satellite products from the Copernicus Marine Service are provided to aquaculture farmers and fish industries. They also use weekly bulletins based on in-situ HAB observations, a hydrodynamical model downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service model, and in-situ and satellite data from the Copernicus Marine Service.

SUPPORTING AQUACULTURE AND FISHING IN THE ADRIATIC SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W

Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA) in the context of the MERMAID project has developed a regional model in the Adriatic Sea for the aquaculture and fisheries industries. The Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea ocean currents model and satellite sea surface temperature data are used among other sources as input for their regional Adriatic Sea model. Maps of various useful parameters such as potential fish harvests (in tons per year) are made available to aquaculture farmers and fish industries. Such dashboards help them with their day-to-day decision making, for example to optimize the selection of sites for growing shellfish, or to monitor water quality. Andrea Taramelli from ISPRA says that "the Copernicus Marine Service ocean currents and satellite sea surface temperature data are key inputs for our Aquaculture dashboard. This saved us the time and expertise we would have had to invest to develop a hydrographical circulation model to get the currents right".

ACRI-ST and 7 partners have developed products, tools and services for the aquaculture and fishing industries in the framework of the FP7-SAFI project. Indicators and tools collecting data from various sources such as the Ocean Colour and Sea Surface Temperature satellite products from the Copernicus Marine Service are available to aquaculture farmers and fishing-related industries. Such dashboards help them with their daily decision making, for example to optimise site location selection for shellfish growth, or to monitor water quality. Antoine Mangin from ACRI-ST says that "more than 65 end users have been consulted so far and are potentially interested by the SAFI services".

SUPPORTING THE AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY IN EUROPE

Deltares, Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), Water Insight and DHI have collaborated in the EU-funded project AQUA-USERS (https://portal.aqua-users.eu/), which provides the aquaculture industry with user-relevant and timely information based on the most up-to-date satellite data and innovative optical in-situ measurements. The key purpose is to develop an application that brings together satellite information on water quality and temperature with in-situ observations, as well as relevant weather prediction and met-ocean data. The application and underlying database is linked to a decision support system that includes a set of (user-determined) management options. Specific focus is put on the development of indicators based on Earth observation data for aquaculture management, including indicators for harmful algae bloom events. The methods and services developed within AQUA-USERS are tested by the members of the user board, aquaculture companies and organisations representing different geographic areas and aquacultural production systems.

Water quality is a critical factor when culturing any aquatic organism. Optimal water quality varies by species and must be monitored to ensure growth and survival. The quality of the water in the production systems can significantly affect the organism's health and the costs associated with getting a product to the market. Water quality parameters that are commonly monitored in the aquaculture industry include temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity, hardness, ammonia, and nitrites.

The Copernicus Marine Service Satellite Ocean Colour data are usefull for water quality monitoring, as it allows us to improve coherence in eutrophication assessments based on chlorophyll.

SUPPORTING FISHERMEN IN THE BALTIC SEA

In January 2015, in Vordingborg Kommune in Denmark, very high mortality was observed among Pike following a surge. Pike (Gedde in Danish) are a species of carnivorous fish, living typically in brackish and fresh waters of the Northern Hemisphere. They have a long and distinguished history in cuisine and are popular fare in Europe. An investigation showed the high mortality of these fish to be related to high salinity levels and that the saline water intrusion had caused damage to the local fishing industry. The Baltic Sea forecasts of the Copernicus Marine Service were used to obtain salinity measurements in the relevant waters and were provided to the end-user local district authorities such as Vordingborg Kommune. In this case, Copernicus Marine Service BALTIC model products provided high quality data which met user needs.

The Baltic Sea is a unique sea area. Even though the Danish straits connect it to the Atlantic Ocean, its salinity is very low : only about one fifth of the salinity of the oceans. The Baltic Sea is also shallow (Its average depth is about 54 metres) hence very sensitive to any saline or oxygenated water intrusion. The oxygen level in water also depend on its stratification and the occurence of winter convection which breaks through stratification. Better understanding the Baltic Sea water circulation is a necessary step for its sustainable management.

CMEMS Analysis and Forecast model products provide with 7-day forecast of 3D ocean salinity fields updated daily. Physics Model over the Baltic Sea is used in this application. It provides hydrodynamic forecast including high frequency processes of paramount importance to characterize regional scale marine processes.

SUPPORTING FISHING & AQUACULTURE SECTOR IN CHILE

Instituto de Fomento Pesquero (IFOP) is a public institution in Chile, which supports the sustainable development of the country fishing & aquaculture sector. It has developed an oceanographic operational system for southern Chile that is used to better manage this ecosystem and its fishery & aquaculture activities. Since 2014, Instituto de Fomento Pesquero (IFOP) has initiated a program for the implementation of an operational system, whose main objective is to generate forecasts of oceanographic variables in the fjord and canal area of southern Chile. In this area, aquaculture plays an important social and economical role, but lacks adequate environmental management.

That is why this operational system in its first stage seeks to solve the local hydrodynamics, what will enable in the mid-term to couple it with biogeochemical modules. Both boundary and initial conditions of mass and velocity fields are daily downloaded from the CMEMS global ocean model and then downscalled to local specific resolution.

Chile is home to the world largest estuarine system, it has some 80,000 km of coastline, and the country economy depends on this fragile coastal ecosystem. It is the world second largest salmon producer, with around 38% of the market share. Chile has been confronted with ecosystem challenges in terms of resources and changing environmental patterns. For example last year, they had unprecedented algal blooms (red tides).

Fish, shellfish and seaweed farmers depend on the ocean for their livelihood, and changes in the environmental conditions can have dramatic effects on their farm production. PULSE provides farmers an easy way to regularly monitor changing water conditions. This allows them to make key decisions about when to feed, plant or harvest their crops as well as manage risks such as high water temperatures or harmful algae blooms.

Copernicus Marine products provide global data on several factors, including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll concentrations and wave height, with data on history, additional environmental parameters and hourly reports for select parameters.
