Father Sinclair welcomed to parish At the beginning of August, St Lawrence’s Catholic Church welcomed the parish’s new priest, Father Karl Sinclair.

by MOLLY SHANNON Originally from Sydney, Father Sinclair was ordained back in 2 0 2 0 . A lt h o u g h t h i s tim i ng made for a n unconventional start to his priesthood, it hasn’t deterred his passion for the church and his role within it.

“COVID really impacted my first two to three years of priesthood, there were so many restrictions, so many things we couldn’t do,” he said.

“That was a dramatic thing – to be preaching to an empty church, to people through the camera who I didn’t know because I’d only just arrived. “ Eighteen months wasn’t long enough to make a big impact, but there was a lot of learning there and learning that there are different ways of being in church, so it was a really good time there too. ” Father Sinclair said starting out during the pandemic had taught him a great deal and helped him understand the role he wanted to establish in the parish and community.

Before accepting his position at Coonabarabran, he served in Bathurst for 18

months and is now on a long-term appointment at St Lawrence’s, which is typically a six-year placement. “ My 1 8 m o n t h s i n B at hu r st wa s a ver y d i f fer ent s et up a nd structure, because the bishop is there and it runs in a very different way,” Father Sinclair said. “ But that was good too and it had its own challenges and joys. I got to quite enjoy preaching in the cathedral – there was lots of diversity – it was a nice space to celebrate.”

Father Sinclair is in charge of the parishes o f S t L aw r e n c e ’s i n Coonaba rabran and St John’s in Baradine a nd wh i le mov i ng t o Coonabarabran was an adjustment, he said he has enjoyed the change of pace.

“It’s been lovely, I’ve found the people very nice and warm,” Father Sinclair said.

“I grew up in the city, so this is the smallest place I’ve ever lived and it’s my first time ever really living by myself,. “ So its been a huge adjustment for me, but the parishioners especially have been lovely.

“It’s a change of pace, but its not a bad thing.”

So far, Father Sinclair has found himself busier then he expected, which he said was a pleasant surprise.

A lthough he h asn’t had much time to explore the town and surrounds, Father Sinclair said he looks forward to showing visiting family and friends the Warrumbungles. “ T he nex t t i me my pa rents c ome, I ’m sure we’re going to go bu shwa l k i ng i n t he Warrumbungles,” he said.

“It’s unlikely it’s the sort of thing I’ll do by myself, but I might get there if somebody prompts me.

“The observatory is also fascinating, so I’m hoping it lures my brother and his children here, because my young niece is quite into science at the moment.”

However, this isn’t his f irst time in Coonabarabran, having visited as a seminarian and again for the Coona Cup. Father Sinclair said he was passionate about the church and wants to create a positive and welcoming environment for parishioners and the wider community.

“Coona is quite healthy as far as parishes in small towns go – it has a lot of

active members,” he said. “ S o, it ’s just ab out building on that. T he traje c t or y i n a lot of smaller parishes has not been great in recent years, with parishioners getting older and fewer young people getting involved or coming to church.”

A c k nowle d g i n g t he decline in younger parish members, Father Sinclair hinted at plans to encourage more youth to participate in church, a goal many parishes are working towards these days.

“If I had any goal, it’s t o add ress that issue before it really becomes a problem here too,” he said. “ It ’s a b out r a i s i n g par ishioners up to be leader s , t o be pe ople capable of sharing their own faith with others.”

While plans are still ta k i ng shape, Father Sinclair said his priority is to strengthen the church. “ T he sad rea l it y is that if we’re not actively growing, we’re going to shrink,” he said.

“We don’t just sit around and say nice things to each other – we’re here to proclaim the good news of salvation, and that should motivate and inspire us.”

Leaving behind a 17-year legacy From the day the doors opened 19 years ago, Vicki Poyser has poured warmth and dedication into ADRA. Now, as she steps away from this chapter of her life, the community carries forward the legacy she helped build.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY The Coonabarabran ADRA (Adventist Development and Re l i e f Ag e n c y) s h o p wa s fo u n d e d by t h e Seventh-day Adventist Church in 2006, with the mission to support those in times of need.

Coonabarabran local, Vicki Poyser, along with other members of the church community, helped bring the idea to life. “ We wa nte d to d o some sort of community service to help people in hard times. The church decided on an op shop,” Vicki said.

“We’ve been going ever since. It has basically been the same group of volunteers that we started off with – so we’re all about 20 years older now!”

Being able to ser ve the community in this way has been an important part of Vicki’s life.

“It’s been a wonderful ex per ience fo r me.

I’ve not been involved i n a ny t h i n g l i ke t h a t before.

“I really enjoyed the work, and we have a great team of volunteers.”

Vicki fi rst began as a volunteer and after four years in the role, she s tepped i nto the m a n a g e r’s p o s i t i o n when the previous manager resigned.

“I was asked to take over the managership a nd I’ve been d o i ng that ever since.”

It is hard to list all of the contributions ADRA h a s m a d e w it h i n t h e community and beyond ove r t h e ye a r s . F ro m of fer ing af fo rdable second - hand goods to the communit y, to donating financial resources to local organisations, the Op Shop has suppo r ted the communit y and surrounds in numerous ways.

Over the years, ADRA has made financial contr ibutions to local organisations such as

Girl Guides, Riding for the Disabled, Orbital Swing Band, Coonabarabran Cancer Support Group, along with local health ser vices and surrounding schools.

ADRA also provides support across Australia a n d ove r s e a s d u r i n g natural disasters, from the Lismore floods to international emergency relief efforts.

“I’ve just been glad to be part of the team that makes you feel good, to be able to contribute to organisations in your local communit y in particular,” Vicki said.

The experience itself and connection to the community have been a hugely satisfying venture for Vicki.

“We have a wonderful group of ladies. I have made some good friends over the years, but I’ve really enjoyed the actual work itself. “ Yo u s e e s o m a n y unusual things that people have come to treasure over the years

– sometimes we don’t even know what they are. “ I ’m 81 a n d my husband i s 86, so we have decided to move into a retirement village on the coast in Newcastle, as we have a g o o d s p r i n k l i n g of family down that way.”

Vicki is confident that the ADR A team w i l l continue to ser ve the co m m u n it y fo r m a ny years to come. “ I ’m s u re t h e s h o p w i l l continue to be r un successfully. I am leaving it in good hands,” she said.

A D R A vo l u nte e r, Stephanie Pocock has now taken on the position as manager after working alongside Vicki for the past decade.

“Vicki is a ver y fair, compassionate and understanding person,” Stephanie said.

“She was greatly appreciated and w i l l be missed.

“I certainly have big shoes to fill!”

Bloomfest blossoms Warrumbungle Shire Council is inviting locals to come together and celebrate as Bloomfest returns to Dalgarno Street, Coonabarabran, on Saturday, 20 September 2025 from 3-9pm.

The free community festival w i l l t ransfo r m t h e tow n ce nt re i nto a lively hub of colour, art, music, workshops, food and family fun, with something for everyone to enjoy.

This year’s program features: • F ree l ive music all evening with per for mances by T illy Poole, Phat Brass, and local favourites ‘Where’s Dave’.

• Free entertainment by the Coonabarabran Celtic Club Pipes and D r u m s, M u s ta D a n ce Line Dancing, and ch i l d re n’s s o n g s a n d games.

COONABARABRAN GARDEN CLUB: SPRING FLOWER SHOW

Annual show blooms with colour The Coonabarabran Garden Club’s annual Bulbs and Camellia Spring Flower Show brought colour and charm to the Presbyterian Church on 29 August. With a strong turnout, vibrant displays and a wide variety of blooms from camellias to native flowers, the event celebrated the best of spring and the passion of local gardeners.

by MOLLY SHANNON Garden Club president, Elaine Gardiner said she was happy with the turn out of this year’s event.

“I think this year’s Flower Show was excellent,” Ms Gardiner said.

“We had a slow start and we were all worried that there may not be enough bulbs, like daffodils and snowdrops, but it’s turned out to be extremely good.

“Attendees have averaged similar numbers as we get most years, it just depends a little bit on the weather and today, being sunny, has been a nice day for people to come out.”

This year’s Spring Show offered a wide range of classes, giving exhibitors plenty of opportunity to showcase their best plants.

“We had camellias and then we had all the bulbs, so the snowdrops and the daffodils – all the different types – and narcissus,” Ms Gardiner said.

“Then we also had a native flowers’ section and the arrangement section, so it’s fairly broad sections that we have.”

However, there was some standouts for Ms Gardiner.

“There were two or three really different ones. And a couple of the daffodils were extremely out there – and that means perfect,” she said.

Judges this year were Gunnedah locals, Hope Phillips and Joan Harwood, who travelled to Coonabarabran for the event and spent time deliberating over the selection of bulbs and flowers.

It wasn’t Ms Phillips first time judging the Coonabarabran Garden Club Spring Flower Show.

Having grown up in Coonabarabran, she has judged many local flower shows, including earlier this year at

the Coonabarabran Show. Her experience allows her to select the very best entries “I’ve been showing for 19 years,” Ms Phillips said.

“I look for flower and foliage quality, freshness, colour, size, form and condition.

“Quality blooms should be fresh and firm and at the perfect stage of bloom.

“When harvesting, cuts should be made in the cool of the evening, the night prior, or in the dawn of the morning – never harvest in full sun or at midday, as the sun will compromise the quality.

“Overall, I really enjoyed the show, it was quite a nice day out.”

For Ms Harwood, however, this was a first-time experience and she said that she was happy with her decisions and enjoyed the opportunity.

“Once I started it didn’t seem to be a difficult job,” Ms Harwood said.

This year saw younger generations submitting their cuttings and floral displays, which Ms Gardiner said was been great to see.

“It’s lovely to see young people come and join,” Ms Gardiner said.

“We don’t often get young ones. I’m not sure if it’s just because the information doesn’t get out or there aren’t that many mums that have the time to help with their young one – but it’s been lovely to see them come and have a go,” she said.

Every two years, the club also ventures further afield, visiting gardens across the state. This year, members will be heading to Bathurst to explore its spring displays.

Reg Mombassa’s Skeleton Fish stars in Coona exhibition Fish On Roof – Exploration of the Skeleton Fish Motif in Reg Mombassa’s art opens in Coonabarabran.

It all started with the purchase of an inflatable fish skeleton on an online auction site. With no information about the lot in the auction listing, the buyer was taking a punt that their hunch was correct – and that this was a work of art by Chris O’Doher ty (aka Reg Mombassa).

The hunch paid off and research was conf i r med that the Skeleton Fish was indeed a Mombassa work; one of a dozen of his iconic characters that were made into giant 3D models to parade a round the r unning track during the 2000 Sydney Olympics closing ceremony. After being seen by 2.4 billion people for around 20 minutes i t d i s a p p e a r e d i n to the back rooms of the

inflatable manufacturers until it was auctioned off.

“I bought Skeleton Fish (it’s actual name) because it is an amazing piece of ar t and I k new it wou l d m a ke a magnificent centre piece for an exhibition at SPACE,” said Allison Reynolds, curator of the Fish on Roof – Exploration of the Skeleton Fish Motif in Reg Mombassa’s art exhibition.

“Ever yone who knows the work of Reg Mombassa will recognise the q u i r k y cockatoo tongue, big fat lips and dead stare. I don’t know how it didn’t end up in the Powerhouse Museum like a lot of Reg’s other Olympic stuff, but it is Coonabarabran’s win.”

Celebrating 25 years since Skeleton Fish was last seen in publ ic,

Allison has built a small exhibition of examples of the skeleton fish in Mombassa’s work from the 90s until now (an or iginal linocut done in collaboration with Glenno Smith), videos and a projected mural. The exhibition is described as bringing one of Reg’s background characters to the foreground for admiration.

“Reg Mombassa knows about the exhibition and has written a piece on why Skeleton Fish and why skeletons in general. It’s been pr inted as one of the displays. He was also very generous with his compliments about what we are doing at SPACE, which was just lovely”.

The property of these friends is water meter connected. This meter is needless – my friends have their own water supply. This meter, when installed, recorded zero water used – it has remained at zero.

A while ago my friends received from Warrumbungle Shire Council a water bill for $760 – for water they had not used.

After persistent, rightful objections to Warrumbungle Shire Council, the Council admitted their mistake and this bill was cancelled, with deep, profound and personal apologies from Council and staff members, with the words so stated, ‘It should not have happened’.

Two questions: How do these things happen?

A bigger question: What is the problem – ongoing – regarding the errors in the issuing of these water bills that so upset and distress people who receive them, particularly if you are 92 years of age?

Scott Barrett MLC visits Coonabarabran National Party Member of Legislative Council, Scott Barrett visited Coonabarabran on 28-29 July, talking to locals and gaining insight into the strengths and issues present in the community.

variety of current issues, including feral pest control, the housing and infrastructure crisis and inadequate response from the government regarding such issues.

The community had the opportunity to meet with Mr Barrett at SPACE Art Gallery on the Tuesday morning, where Mr Barrett highlighted the imbalance between

government support in regards to infrastructure and housing and the i n c re a s i n g d e m a n d in communities like Coonabarabran. “ We w a n t m o r e people to move up to these towns. So we need to have the housing available for that,” he said.

Vandals target cemetery sign Vandals have struck at the entrance to the Baradine Cemetery, damaging a new directional map that had been installed to improve access and assist those visiting loved ones’ graves.

by LIZ CUTTS The installation of a new directional map at the entrance to the cemetery was meant to help visitors, but instead it has become the target of vandalism, leaving the Warrumbungle Shire Council and community dismayed at the senseless damage.

“The renewal of cemetery signage was intended to provide directions to cemetery visitors locate loved ones and create more meaningful experiences at our cemeteries,” said a Council spokesperson.

“Sadly, the new

Baradine sign has already been damaged.”

Council said the sign was delivered as part of Stage 1 of the Shire Wide Cemetery Signage Renewal Project, funded through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI) – Phase 4.

The vandals have caused significant damage to the directional sign, pulling out most of the rivets and bending the structure, so that it now hangs precariously by just two rivets.

“Repairs due to vandalism not only cost

money and time, but they also delay other important work like mowing, bin collection, street cleaning and tree trimming,” added Council.

“Let’s work together to protect our community spaces and make it clear that vandalism is not on.”

Members of the public are requested that if they see or are aware of theft or vandalism to report it through the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or by online through the NSW Police Force Community Portal. All reports are anonymous.

communities, that sometimes you fear that decision makers miss the connectivity between different issues.”

Mr Barrett commented on the social and environmental impact of renewable energy within the community and primary production in the area.

“We need to be watching very closely the impact of renewables on our communities.

“Not the feel-good impact, but the actual impact that these are having on our communities. “ To w n s l i k e Coonabarabran are so dependent on agriculture and primary industries, so we need to be doing what we can to support them.”

Mr Barrett said that optimism and pride radiate through the community, despite the issues faced.

“You can very quickly see the passion that people have for the town and understand why that is there.”

Mr Barrett said he hopes that by visiting regional communities he is better able to understand and advocate their issues in parliament.

“There’s a feeling that some of the decision makers don’t understand that it’s different living in regional communities.

“We face different issues in our regional communities. We have different people, we have different values.

Decision makers need to understand that,” Mr Barrett said.

“Not many good ideas come out of Macquarie Street.

“Engaging with communities is integral to seeing the change needed for rural towns.

“The good ideas come out of cafes in Coonabarabran. Part of my job is to act as a conduit between those good ideas born out of practicality and realities and then taking them back to Macquarie Street.”

Mrs Burton shared that the opportunity brought to light the issues that a variety of community members held.

“It was interesting just talking and listening to locals as well as business owners, how diverse their issues are – many are local government

issues (Council) like roadworks and flood mitigation, but others were certainly relevant,” Mrs Burton said.

She agreed with Mr Barrett that at the root of many issues brought up was the need of better liaison between different levels of

government.

Mrs Burton said that the response from the community in regards to Mr Barrett’s visit was very positive.

“Everyone was happy to chat. We had great conversations with both business owners and customers,” she said.

Bulls hit $22k at DSK Angus Sale The 32nd annual DSK Angus bull sale made its mark on Friday, 18 July, with standout results and strong interest that saw two bulls topping the sale at $22,000 each.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY L oca l stud, DSK A ngus and Charolais hosted the annual sale at the Borah Station property, north east of Coonabarabran, offering a line of 40 Angus bulls, w ith a 10 0 per cent clearance rate and an average price of $11,500.

Buyers travelled from Bylong Valley in NSW to Biloela in Queensland to attend the event.

Stud owners Helen A lexander and Chris K nox said they were pleased with the depth of qua l ity and the momentum behind the sale. “ It was one of ou r strongest sales in terms of quality of bulls offered and strength of the sale,” Helen said.

Many attendees commented on the quality of bulls offered and the presentation of the line.

Industr y repor ts lead ing up to the auction suggested that the strength of the sale would be found in the heifer bulls offered.

Hei fer bulls are selected for their ability

to sire calves with lower birth weights, improving calving ease. In contrast, heavier bulls with larger carcases typically suit a different market.

Helen explained that the results they received reflected differently to their expectations. “ There have been a lot of reports this year saying that the heifer bull market was going to be strong this year,” she said.

“It was not that way for our sale. People were chasing strength, weight and carcase.”

T he two top-priced bulls, lot 9 DSK PR U Rock U185 and lot 14 DSK N71 Undisputed U189, sold to R McIntyre from Biloela and Hewitt Cattle Australia respectively, both highlighted this testament, showing strength and performance.

Helen said both lot 9 and 14 were sired by home-bred bulls, DSK BM Poddy Rock and DSK YX New Age. A proven sire, DSK Y X New Age has demonstrated excellence both through his progeny, producing the top-priced

bull at last year’s sale as well.

His success continues i nt o t he s how r i n g , c l a i m i n g I nt erbr e e d Champion at the 2019 EK K A and Grand Champion at the Brisbane Royal Show.

Helen said the sale brought buyers old and new to the property.

“It’s wonderful that we’ve got so many longterm clients – they know ou r bul ls a re sound, they know that they will do the job that they’re looking for. “ T hey keep coming back and new ones are following along, seeing what we’re doing as well.

“It’s been a fantastic year for us.”

“We encourage people to come, not just to buy a bull, but we encourage people to come have a look – even if the bulls might be too dear for them or they don’t need a bull that year – come have a steak and a chat with us and see what we’re doing,” Helen said.

Helen and Chr is e x t ende d t hei r b e s t wishes to buyers, trusting the bulls would meet expectations and strengthen herds in the coming seasons. “ We hop e for a successful season and that they can achieve what they were hoping for,” Helen said.

“It is all about putting the right bull with the right kind of cows to achieve the goal that you’re after.”

Be a part of the Pilliga Ultra More than 200 runners and hikers will descend on Pilliga Pottery from 19–21 September for the third annual Pilliga Ultra.

While the competitors will take centre stage, organisers say it’s the volunteers who make the weekend possible.

“We simply couldn’t do it without them,” said Hilary McAllister, CEO of For Wild Places.

“From hosting aid stations to helping runners find their way through the forest, volunteers are the lifeblood of the event. They bring the energy, the encouragement and the local spirit that make the Pilliga Ultra so special.”

In the lead-up, the Pilliga Pottery team and legendary bushwalker Kerry Lowe have prepared more than 50 kilometres of trails, while the Coonabarabran Men’s Shed has crafted timber medals, and local businesses have pitched in from coolrooms to bus hire.

VP Day – 80 years on The Coonabarabran community gathered at the Memorial Swimming Pool on Thursday, 15 August, to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day. President of the C o o n a b a ra b ra n R S L Sub - b ra nch, Kev i n Ba r r i ngton, ref l ected on the signif icance of the milestone, acknowledging the fe w r e m a i n i n g W W I I veterans.

M r Ba r r ington paid tribute not only to the living, but also to those whose names are inscribed on the honour roll.

“Time rolls on, many of us are very conscious we are getting much older and so 80 years becomes significant,” Mr Barrington said.

“If the war did not get them, time has,” he said.

He spoke of the eno r mous sacr if ices m a d e b ot h at h o m e and abroad during war time.

“War costs,” he said.

“A l m o s t s i x y e a r s of wa r demanded of Australians at home, and in the field, some beltt i g hte n i n g h a rd s h i p.

He also reflected on the devastation of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which brought the war to an end.

Mr Barrington reminded those

“During WWII, a total up a round 3 0 m i l l ion people were taken PoW. Allied powers captured 13.6 million. Australians lost 30,000 as prisoners.

“T he s it uat i o n, a s I am sure you know, was very bad for the 22,000 Australians captured by the Japanese. In fact, come 15 August, it was so m e m o nt h s b efo re many su r vi vi ng PoWs could make it home.”

The service also paid tr ibute to Vietnam veterans, with Mr Barrington recalling the Battle of Long Tan and the loss of Coolah man, Paul Large.

“Today we especially remember and pay t r i b ute to th ose w h o served in WWII and in

Vietnam. We mourn the loss of those k illed in action and other causes in the theatre of these wars.

“Lest We Forget.”

To fur ther mark the 8 0th anniversar y, the Coonaba rab ran RSL Sub - branch hosted a commemorative luncheon on Sunday, 17 August. The event drew a la rge crowd, w ith community members, vete rans and thei r fam i l ies gathe r i ng to sha re sto r ies, honou r s e r v i c e, a n d r e f l e c t together.

The luncheon provided an opportunity for fellowship and remembrance, ensuring the legacy of sacrifice and service continues to be pas sed on to younger generations.

Coonabarabran RSL Sub-branch commemorated 80 years since VP Day with a service at the memorial swimming pool, attended by ex-service men and women, local school representatives and members of the public.

Coonabarabran Public What a hectic and joyful time we are all enjoying at CPS! As spring sparkles through the clouds and warms our hearts with flowers and sunshine, our days are filled with learning, laughter, and sporting activities. No one is sitting still for very long!

Recently, Mr Low hosted a hugely successful Science Day and Marble Run Competition. Each class designed and built their own marble run, earning points for height, creativity – and even tricky challenges like right-angle turns.

Students were limited only by their imaginations and the results were truly spectacular. Mr Low was in his element, surrounded by cardboard cylinders, sticky tape and curious young problemsolvers. The whole school impressed with

outstanding designs.

Our enthusiastic and dedicated Kindergarten staff also led their classes on an excursion to the National Park for a fun-filled Teddy Bears’ Picnic. With perfect weather on our side, the day was brimming with singing, dancing, exploring nature, and, of course, plenty of teddy bear fun. The wide smiles on every child’s face as the bus returned said it all – a magical day was had by all.

We also celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Week along with Education Week.

Families joined us at school, taking part in classroom activities and sharing in the spirit of public education in NSW – and especially here at Coonabarabran.

Monkey Room visits T h is t erm , classes from St Lawrence’s have been enjoying visits to the Monkey Room.

During these sessions, ou r students spend time with the preschool ch i ld ren , suppor t i ng them w ith read i ng, joining in guided play activities and sharing lots of fun together.

These visits provide a wonderful opportunity for ou r students t o develop responsibility, leadership and care for younger children, while a ls o bu i ld i ng st r ong connections within our school community.

Bathurst Diocesan Athletics Carnival On Friday, 22 August, a number of our students proudly represented our school at the Bathurst Diocesan Athletics Carnival in Dubbo. We a re i ncred ibly pr oud of each participant for their outstanding effort, s p o r t s m a n s h ip , a nd commitment on the day.

A s p e c i a l cong ratu lations goes to Henley, Reeva and Loki, who have qualified for the upcoming Polding Athletics Championsh ips, t o be held at the Hunter Sports Centre in September. L oki was Junior Boy Champion and Henley was joint Senior Boy Champion.

Reeva will compete in the 100m dash. Henley has quali f ied for the 100m dash, 200m sprint and long jump. Loki will compete in the 10 0m dash, 200m sprint, high jump and long jump.

We wish our talented athletes the very best of luck as they prepare for the nex t level of c o mp e t i t i o n a n d w e know they will continue t o ma ke ou r school proud.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Tooraweenah Public Small Schools’ Athletics Carnival On Friday, 8 August, our school participated in the Small Schools’ Athletics Carnival.

Athletes from the Dubbo Wellington Small Schools gathered to compete in a range of track and field events, showcasing their skills and determination.

Congratulations to Billy Larkin, who was the Small Schools’ Junior Boy Champion, an amazing feat for an eight-year old, competing in most events against the junior boys, being 8, 9 or 10 years old.

Our students, K-6, participated in a variety of events, including tabloids and modified field events for the younger students, and sprints, relays, long jump, shot put, discus and high jump for the older students. In less than ideal weather conditions, our students cheered each other on, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and camaraderie.

The efforts and results for our students were remarkable.

Congratulations to everyone who participated to the best of their ability, many who received ribbons on the day.

Moorambilla Students Bonnie Alison, Eloise Jenkin and Maddison Jenkin participated in their first Moorambilla Camp of 2025, ‘Birralii’ in

Baradine over three days. The camp provided many opportunities for social as well as musical and performance growth for our students. Bring on the magic!

When asked what was the best thing about camp, Bonnie expressed that, “It was really exciting. We did a lot of new songs and made a lot of new friends.”

Maddi said, “Singing was the best part. It was challenging when we had to sing a whole song. We had to follow the music.”

They acknowledged

that the camp challenged them to get out of their comfort zone, learn new songs, work as a team and challenge themselves to strive for improvement.

These results reflect the hard work and dedication of all our students, as well as the

supportive teaching staff who have nurtured their public speaking skills.

VIEW CLUB NEWS Coonabarabran VIEW recently held its August meeting. Robyn Evans was a guest and Leanne Redfern, general manager of Cooinda, was guest speaker. J Janette Barkley, one of our program officers, introduced the guests for the evening.

Leanne reinforced that Cooinda is a proud, community-owned, non-profit organisation that provides high-quality care and services to the aged community of the Warrumbungle Shire and beyond – aged care, including residential retirement living, home and community care and Commonwealth Home Support program.

Leanne explained the criteria to become part of the community as a resident or as a user of the programs and facilities offered to the community.

H e r i n fo r m a t i o n ce r ta i n l y s h o w e d h o w Coonabarabran has provided for the aging community in Coonabarabran and stressed the need to continually upgrade and expand facilities and services.

The Coonabarabran Club provided a delicious meal and to complete the evening our president, June McWhirter presented VIEW member Lindy Swanson with her 10-year badge.

Coolah’s crowded cabinet Coolah’s Bowen Oval was the place to be on Saturday as the Castlereagh League grand finals turned the town into a cauldron of footy fever. Despite an arctic wind sweeping across the ground, a bumper crowd packed in to watch the action – and they weren’t disappointed, as the local Flyers and Kangaroos both claimed premiership glory to add yet more silverware to Coolah’s already crowded cabinet.

by BRYSON LUFF Kicking off the day was the reserve-grade game played between the Binnaway Bombshells and the Baradine Magpies, which saw the Bombies ahead 10-nil at half time.

The Binnaway boys continued the job in the second half to come away with an 18 to 6 win and the Premiership Shield, leav i ng the M ag pies la menti ng what was their worst performance for the season.

The league-tag grand final turned out to be an absolute nail biter b et we en t he C o ol a h Flyers and the Dunedoo Swannettes, with the winner of the very high standard and thrilling game literally not known until the final second of the enthralling encounter!

The Flyers held a 12 to 8 lead at the break after both sides had scored two tries apiece in the opening half, before the Swannettes drew level, 12 -a l l , w ith a nother tr y a f t er the brea k .

Then, with 10 minutes remaining, they edged ahead with their fourth of the match to take the lead 16 to 12.

The Flyers responded five minutes later with a converted try to make the scoreboard read 18

to 16 in their favour.

This set up what was to be a tense finish that had suppor ters f rom both sides screaming encouragement as their respective sides a l t e r n at e d b e t w e e n periods of scintillating attack and desperate defence.

With less than f ive se conds t o go a Swannettes’ raid down the r ight side was stopped just centimetres short of the line and then, in the final second of the game, it appeared that the Swannies had claimed a miraculous victory as one of their players speared over the line. However, they were penalised for having only one tag, the other tag being lost in the prior, f r en z ie d at t ac k a nd it was to be a Coolah Flyers’ victory – much to the delight of their home crowd!

The Swannettes certainly gave it their all and, in fact, scored four tries to three during the game. But the Flyers were not to be denied, a nd hav i ng lost last year’s grand final and suffering only one defeat in 2025, that being to t he Swa n net t e s t wo weeks prior in the major semi, the Premiership Shield now sits alongside t he Je s sic a S k i n ner

The league-tag game certainly had the large crowd buzzing and the platform was set for the final showdown in the 2025 Castlereagh League season, that being the highly-anticipated clash between the undefeated Coolah Kangaroos and the Coonaba rabran Un icor ns, who had pushed the Roos to the limit in their previous two meetings!

With the strong wind wh ippi ng ac r o s s the ground it soon became apparent that kicking was going to play an impor tant pa r t in proceedings – and indeed it did. The first points came in the 9th minute when C o ol a h’s f r ont rower, Chanse Burgess, put a def t g r ubber through the Unicorns’ defensive line which was duly grounded by his lock, Hugh Wesley, and with the conversion being successful the ‘Roos were up six points to nil.

Coonabarabran almost replied in kind some 10 minutes later when their half, Peter Watton, ne a rly r e g at her e d a grubber that he had put in. But, to the dismay of the Unicorn faithful, he lost possession over the line.

The visitors continued to apply pressure, but the Coolah defence stood solid and eventually play moved down the other end of the field. Another grubber kick was again put in, resulting in a Coonabarabran player spilling the ball when trying to clean it up – the ball then picked up by Coolah’s Tyler Lennox, who dived over to score what was to become a converted try and a 12 points to nil lead to the red and whites!

With half time looming the Unicorns needed to get on the scoreboard before the break, which is exactly what they did, via a try to their talented centre Brad Fuller. Nick Willoughby added the extras, and t he s c or eb o a r d r e ad 12 points to six as the players trooped to the sheds!

Fuller was at it again almost immediately after the resumption of play when, following a good Coonabarabran attack down the right f lank,

a kick was put in and the ball was not cleaned up by Coolah, but was r e ad i ly a c c ept e d by Fuller, who dived over out wide to score.

A magnificent sideline conversion in difficult conditions by Willoughby locked the scores up at 12 all – and it was very much a case of game on!

Some eight minutes later, the ‘Roos were in again, with the grubber kick being the attacking weapon of choice. This time their half back, Dan L ane, being the beneficiary and also the kicker of the conversion to make it 18 to 12 to his side!

W ith 18 m i nut es elapsed in the second half the ‘Roos added another six points to that tally, when, for a bit of variety, a swirling bomb was put up, coming down in open territory. The track of the subsequent bounce caused a Coonabarabran player to slip over when he had to change direction, pr e s e nt i n g C o ol a h’s fullback, Jack Piper, with an opportunity to pounce on the ball in goal – that opportunity being readily accepted. With Lane’s conversion going over the black dot, the home side held what looked to be a handy 24 to 12 with one quarter of the game remaining.

The situation looked even rosier for the ‘Roos not long after when a Unicorn player was sent to the bin, but rather incredibly it was to be the visitors who registered the only points during that period of play, with their winger, Sonny Bill Walker, f inishing off some quick hands along the backline to score in the corner. Another great sideline conversion

by Willoughby set up what was to be another grandstand f inish on grand-final day, with just six points separating the two teams and five minutes remaining on the clock!

With the Un icor ns enjoy i ng plenty of possession and good field position and throwing everything at them, the Kangaroos were called on to defend desperately throughout those final m i nut es, wh ich they somehow did to come away with a hard fought 24 to 18 victory!

C er t a i n ly, t he Unicorns can be proud of their effort on the day and throughout the season, but the spoils belong to the Coolah K a nga roos, w ith the Premiership Shield and the Castlereagh Cup taking pride of place along with all the other C a s t ler e a g h L e a g ue silverware available to them, that being the Knockout Shield and the Boronia Cup! However, the course was a tad damp and not much

run and the clover has started to grow though!

Zoe somehow managed to take the NTP, despite having two wisdom teeth removed the day before!

WEDNESDAY GOLF There was very little golf news to report over the month of August. For many and varied reasons to explain the small fields of ladies, we feel that the w inter y blasts tu r ned players away to follow other pursuits.

I have the g reat est admiration for the players who faced probably, the coldest day of the year to compete in the first round of the Club Championships last Saturday, 30 August.

Personally, I did not put my nose out of the door.

VETERANS’ GOLF Tuesday, 5 August Nine veteran golfers travelled to Baradine on Tuesday, 5 August, where they joined with the Baradine vets for an 18 hole, two-man Ambrose competition – and a great barbecue lunch.

Winners on the day were D Bunyan and Tom Underwood. Runnersup were L Bunyan and D Bunyan, while third place went to J Davis and S Larance.

All golfers enjoyed a great day out, with our thanks to Baradine Golf Club.

Tuesday, 12 August Ten veteran golfers took part in the Matchplay competition which started on 12 August. They also took part in the daily competition which was won by Dave Bunyan on a count back from Bob Guichelaar.

Tuesday, 19 August A good field of 10 golfers played in the veterans’ competition on Tuesday, 19 August, with the winner on the

Tuesday, 26 August Eleven players turned out for a great day for golf in the veterans’ competition on Tuesday, 26 August.

NTPs were won by Mick Noy – twice, Bob Guichelaar and Steve Larance. Dave Bunyan won the long putt.

The perfect putt was not won.

Matchplay The Matchplay competition that was played over three weeks concluded with the final on Tuesday, 26 August between Dave Bunyan and John Wood, with Dave taking the win.

Dave also sponsored the event and the Veterans Golf Club thank him for his continued sponsorship.

Doctor dilemma Moree Hospital faced extended period without on-site doctor, says MP Moree Hospital has faced an extended period without an on-site doctor, according to the shire’s representative in state parliament.

Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan broke the

news to the community last week after finding out himself from a community member.

The revelation came as Hunter New England Local Health District faced continued scrutiny from the town of Wee Waa which

finds its hospital still operating on reduced hours without a doctor.

When queried by the North West Magazine late last week, Hunter New England Local Health District advised that there had been a doctor in the emergency

department on the day of its query.

“These unexpected gaps often occur on short notice and may be resolved just as quickly. For this reason, it is not practical to advise the community on every occasion, and we are mindful not to create

unnecessary concern that might discourage people from attending the emergency department when they need to seek care,” a Hunter New England Local Health District spokesperson said.

Childcare support in Warrumbungle Shire

Moree Hospital faced extended period without doctor, says MP Continued from front page “The community can be assured that Moree Hospital continues to deliver safe, high-quality care,” the HNELHD spokesperson said.

“Attracting and retaining doctors in rural areas like Moree is a challenge faced across NSW and throughout Australia.

“Despite every effort to secure medical cover, there will be occasions where a doctor may not be on site.

“When this happens, patients are supported through on-demand virtual care delivered by highly trained emergency physicians, alongside highly skilled nursing staff.”

Patients seeking emergency treatment in Moree were required to use the online service My Emergency Doctor (MED).

Mr Moylan said not having a doctor on-hand in an emergency is not good enough.

“Moree Hospital is the most remote of all hospitals which fall within the Hunter New England Health District and should be prioritised to receive a locum,”

Mr Moylan said.

“Hunter New England Health have instead put in a telehealth system which is unreliable and inadequate for the needs of a hospital which services a community of around 8000 people.

“This business-as-usual approach is not working. A video screen does not work in an emergency.”

Mr Moylan said the state government has again failed the people of regional NSW and our more isolated community members by not providing essential services.

“Just because we live in the regions does not mean we shouldn’t have access to a doctor in the ED,” Mr Moylan said.

“A video screen is not good enough.

“People are travelling from remote farms and villages with emergency health issues only to be told there is no doctor present.

“It is also on the federal government to pull their finger out and address the chronic shortage of general practitioners in regional areas.”

Childcare providers in the Warrumbungle Shire are being encouraged to apply for state grants by the Member for Barwon, Roy Butler.

The grants are part of a NSW government program that delivers more childcare places in western NSW. Grants to expand or upgrade early childhood education services in the Warrumbungle Shire will be available under the second phase of the NSW Workforce Activation Program.

Mr Butler said the benefits will be felt across the community.

“Many western towns have very

low childcare availability, so this program is doing very important work in expanding childcare access for local families,” said Mr Butler.

“But it’s not just local families that will benefit – being able to access childcare means parents are freed up to enter the workforce, which has flow-on effects across local economies.

“We also know that accessing childcare is a barrier for families relocating to the West; it is a hindrance to attracting skilled and essential workers, which holds back our communities,” said Mr Butler.

The first phase of the NSW Workforce Activation Program was rolled out in Broken Hill, Cobar and Bourke last year.

“The NSW government has already made $5.6 million available to create an extra 189 childcare places in Broken Hill, Bourke and Cobar,” said Mr Butler.

“Local facilities are hiring and upskilling staff and planning building upgrades.

“I thank the NSW government for expanding the program to the Warrumbungle Shire, and I encourage local providers to submit an application before the deadline of Friday, November 7, 2025.”

Rescue helicopter’s North West base marks 25 years of operations The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has celebrated 25 years of continuous aeromedical operations across the New England North West, with the milestone anniversary of its Tamworth Base officially marked on Monday, August 25.

Since its launch in 2000, the Tamworth Base has grown into a vital regional emergency response hub, supporting the communities of the New England North West region, delivering a worldclass aeromedical and search and rescue capability.

“Twenty-five years of lifesaving and life-changing critical care is a wonderful milestone and testament to the strength and generosity of the New England North West community, whose support has been vital from the very beginning,” said Mr Steven Underwood, chief executive officer of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The Service officially launched in August 2000 with a single-engine Bell 407 helicopter, operated from hangar space provided

by BAE Systems in Tamworth and from the outset, the Service has been strongly supported by local volunteers and regional business from towns across the region.

Notably, the efforts of early champions like local MP Tony Windsor, the late Cliff Marsh, and

long-time community liaison Barry Walton were instrumental in establishing the Service.

“Throughout droughts, bushfires, floods and tough economic times, the people of this region have been unwavering in their support of the Service and for that we are humbled and deeply grateful,” Mr Underwood said.

In 2007, after the original Bell 407 aircraft was retired, the Service transitioned to twin-engine BK117 helicopters, with further fleet upgrades in 2012.

A major boost for the region occurred in 2017 as part of a statewide integration of services under an initial 10-year contract with NSW Ambulance.

Local firm Best Practice Constructions led the build of a modern base to support the arrival of the highly capable AW139 emergency medical services helicopter.

Today, the Tamworth Base is an integral part of the broader health network and, in partnership with NSW Health and NSW Ambulance, we collectively provide critical care to the patient at the point of need across the region.

“This milestone is a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come but also allows us the opportunity to look to what we can achieve into the future,” Mr Underwood said.

“We are committed to the delivery of an aeromedical and search and rescue capability that the community can be proud of and of delivering that lifesaving and life-changing critical care in times of need,” Mr Underwood said.

The milestone was also recognised by NSW Ambulance executive director of aeromedical operations Dr Sarah Coombes.

“I would like to congratulate the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service on 25 years of dedicated service to the New England North West community,” Dr Sarah Coombes said.

“Communities across NSW should feel safe in the knowledge that wherever they are across the state, the NSW Health critical care medical teams aboard our helicopters can get to them to

deliver life-saving medical care and transport.

“Our partnership with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service to host our aeromedical teams started in 2017 and has helped improve and save the lives of many critically ill or injured patients over the years, and we look forward to continuing to provide that service to those who need it most.”

Good news on crime, Rural Fire Service at Country Mayors general meeting The NSW government, the NSW Police Force and the Judiciary were represented at a Crime focused general meeting of the Country Mayors Association of NSW (CMA), which took place in Parliament House, Sydney, in August.

More than 120 mayors and general managers came together to hear from a top line-up of speakers talking crime and also some key matters of finance, concerning for rural, remote and regional councils.

“We welcomed the encouraging comments from NSW Treasurer, the Hon. Daniel Mookhey MLC about his work with the NSW Auditor-General Mr Bola Oyetunji and Emergency Services Minister the Hon Jihad Dib MP regarding the Red Fleet issue – the term for the NSW government requiring Rural Fire Service assets to be on councils’ books and pay for ongoing maintenance is seriously impacting our bottom lines. Our Treasurer said that CMA Members can be optimistic about RFS legislation reform and I don’t believe he would offer false hopes after years of lobbying on the issue,” CMA chairman and Temora Shire mayor Rick Firman OAM said.

Deputy CMA chairman and Bega Valley Shire mayor Russell Fitzpatrick described the Red Fleet issue as one of the worst and most inexplicable examples of cost-shifting inflicted upon NSW councils.

The NSW Treasurer also cautioned that in its current form, the Workers’ Compensation Scheme is unsustainable.

“Without reform, we will see premiums increase by 36 per cent,” he said.

NSW Police Minister, Yasmin Catley said that reducing community crime is about partnership.

“State and local government must work together, in partnership with First Nations people and the broader community to improve safety in the community and address local challenges. Prevention is fundamental to crime reduction.”

Minister Catley and NSW Police Force Acting Deputy Commissioner Brett Greentree provided a data packed progress report on “Operation Soteria”, which has a regional youth focus, particularly in northern and western NSW. So far they have addressed 340 break and enters; 137 juveniles were charged, with 34 per cent of them already charged or on bail at the time; and 92 offenders have copped 'Boast and Post' charges.

“Everyone in rural, remote and regional NSW has the right to feel safe in their community,” Ms Catley said.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Greentree said that it is important to communicate with communities to instill confidence.

“Everyone needs to spread the good word and highly publicise positive

outcomes because fear of crime impacts quality of life.”

The Acting Deputy Commissioner gave an update on regional crime trends. Robbery is down by eight per cent, steal from motor vehicle is down 11 per cent, break and enter is down four per cent, sexual assault and drug related crime is stable, with increase in motor vehicle theft up 3.3 per cent, domestic violence related crime up four per cent, breach of bail up 12.3 per cent (resulting from targeted operations).

NSW Shadow Police Minister, Paul Toole stated there are less police 'boots on the ground' than when he was in government.

Ms Catley said more police are needed and recruitment initiatives, like ‘Be a cop in your hometown' are seeing positive results.

“We have had over 4600 recruit applications over last 18 months. Improved workforce benefits have contributed to recruitment and retention outcomes, including a once in a generation pay rise, and the move to flexible working hours (FTE model) and opportunity to job share,” Ms Catley said.

The need to increase police numbers in peak holiday times in tourist towns was one local insight conveyed to the Police Minister on the day, by a CMA member council Chief Magistrate of NSW, His Honour Judge Michael Allen provided an understanding of his role, work and regional NSW background. He said that NSW is fortunate to have an independent judiciary, enforcing the laws created by Parliament.

“Our busy Local Court system has 48

magistrates servicing 109 courts across NSW. A Country Service policy is to be implemented, meaning no more FIFO. Ideally, a magistrate should have at least two years in the bush so they understand country communities. Our magistrates handle 45,000 bail applications annually.

There are 80,000 domestic violence matters before our courts annually – it is the scourge of Australia,” he said.

Mayor Firman said the meeting had far from a cheesy finish. “We were also delighted to have the chairman of Bega Cheese, Mr Barry Irvin AM speak on the development of a full circular economy in the Bega Valley and the rewarding buyback of Aussie brands his company has achieved, from Vegemite to Farmers Union Yoghurt.”

Two CMA members gave presentations that demonstrate the proactive roles of councils. Warrumbungle Shire Council tackled illegal tobacco products and premises. They employed an investigator, worked with police and achieved a successful prosecution. Upper Hunter Shire Council saw a positive driver training program in Sydney, recognised a need for a tailored version in their local government area and made it happen.

“The CMA board are extremely proud we were able to offer such a strong list of special guest speakers - we feel there's a genuine signal of respect shown to the CMA we're working hard to ensure we continue to earn it,” said mayor Firman.

“We'd like to think the government and others are listening to and learning from us. We're also doing the same.”

Finalists announced for New England North West Business Awards Business NSW has announced the finalists for the 2025 New England North West Business Awards.

This year, 91 businesses and 39 individuals are in the running to take home one of 19 prestigious regional awards and the opportunity to represent the New England North West at the Business NSW State Business Awards in October.

Business NSW regional director for the New England North West, Diane Gray congratulated the finalists, acknowledging the record response to this year’s program.

“We are thrilled with the record number of entries in 2025, and the calibre of nominations from across the region has been outstanding,” Ms Gray said.

“Our judges faced an extremely difficult task in selecting this year’s finalists. Every business that entered, and each individual who was nominated, should be particularly proud of their efforts.”

The New England North West Business Awards serve as the official pathway to the State Business Awards, hosted by Business NSW. Winners from local chamber programs, including Tamworth, Glen Innes and Tenterfield, qualify as regional finalists, adding to the prestige of this announcement.

Proudly supported by Joblink Plus, all entries are independently assessed by a panel of experienced judges.

This year, finalists represent businesses of all sizes and industries, with the introduction of a new award category in 2025 – the Outstanding Visitor Economy Collaboration Award. This category recognises innovative tourism initiatives and partnerships that are making a positive impact on the region’s visitor economy.
