POLICE NEWS Fatal accident closes Newell A woman has died following a twovehicle crash south of Coonabarabran on Friday, 12 September, that led to the closure of a section of Newell Highway for much of the day.

A round 9.55am, emergency ser v ices were called to the Newell Highway, Gowang, about 3 2 k i lomet r e s s out h of Coonabarabran, fol low i ng repor ts a Volkswagen Golf and a semi-trailer truck had crashed.

More than a meat tray!

Blake Palmer got more than he bargained for when what he thought was a humble meat tray raffle ticket turned out to be a golden entry into one of the country’s richest country racing events – the Kosciuszko.

by MOLLY SHANNON On Monday, 8 September, Blake Palmer bought a ticket believing it was part of a meat raffle at Coonabrabran’s Imperial Hotel, a mistake which landed him a highlycoveted winning ticket in the Kosciuszko race.

Regarded as the richest race in the world for country-trained horses, with a total prize pool of two million dollars, there are only 14 chances to back a winner.

“The pub do a raffle thing where you can win tickets, so I actually just bought one of the raffle tickets – and then won the entries into the horse race,” Blake said.

“I thought it was a meat raffle!

“I don’t follow horse racing, so the odds of this happening are pretty low considering I thought I was buying tickets in a meat raffle.”

Blake said the town of Coonabarabran must have brought him a bit of luck.

“I was actually born in Coona and even though we left when I was little, I feel like I get in with the local vibes here,” he said.

“Maybe there’s some luck in that or

something?”

When Blake learnt the news of the windfall, he didn’t quite believe what was happening.

“When I found out, I didn’t actually understand what old mate from Racing NSW was talking about – I was half suspicious it was a scam,” Blake said.

“I wasn’t really convinced, I sort of just went about my day until I got some emails saying all these horses are gone and I thought, ‘Oh, I should probably look into this’.”

When selecting his horse, Blake wanted to try and go as local as he could, ending up with Lisztomania, from Inverell.

“I know nothing about The Kosciusko. I’m from Narrabri and the horse trainer was from Inverell and I thought, ‘Well that’s local enough for me’.”

Blake is now in the running to secure a maximum first prize of $1 million and a minimum of $12,500.

Regardless of the result, Blake said he was just it for the “vibes” and was hoping to be able to attend the races on the day.

to do with his prize money? Blake is hoping to finally get his hands on a meat tray.

“I reckon I’ll go to the butcher and buy a tray of meat, considering I thought that’s what I was supposed to win...come full circle with it!”

Imperial Hotel manager, Sam Brown said he wasn’t expecting

another lucky local winner this year, but the result was exciting for the venue.

“Last year, Brett Bowman bought his winning Kosciuszko ticket on the TAB app, so we didn’t sell the winning ticket, but this year we have,” Mr Brown said.

“We sold about 500

and there was 208,000 tickets sold altogether for the Kosciuszko – one of those tickets we sold to Blake, so he was very lucky.

“The Imperial wishes Blake good luck at the Kosciuszko this year.”

The Kosciuszko will be held on Everest Day, Saturday, 18 October, at Royal Randwick

Purlewaugh Ball returns in style After a decade-long hiatus, the Purlewaugh ball is back, bringing together faces old and new.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY On 6 September 2025, the Purlewaugh hall was brought back to life for a night of fun, fashion and fundraising.

With 120 attending the event, Purlewaugh Ball committee member, Millie Redden said the night exceeded what they had anticipated.

“It far outweighed our expectations,” Millie said.

“We thought it would just be the committee and a few extras, but people came from Sydney, Mudgee – anyone with a connection to Purlewaugh or had attended events there.”

Local businesses kindly donated prizes for the auction, helping raise a further $12,810 for the event, doubling what the committee had thought possible.

“Everyone who donated was generous without hesitation and I think that’s just so indicative of the community that we have in Coonabarabran,” Milly said.

“We are very lucky and so appreciative.”

In past years, the Purlewaugh Hall has hosted many events, holding decades of

shared memories. The idea to revive the hall came from local farming families, inspired by its legacy as a hub for rural connection.

“We are so lucky to have the hall; others have already done so much work to it in the past,” Millie said.

“There used to be such a great social life in the hall and we thought about how we could bring it back.”

The funds will go towards building a playground for local families, creating a space to connect and strengthen community ties.

“We’re now raising the next generation.

“We thought about how we would raise money to build a playground there, which is how the idea to hold the ball came about,” Millie said.

The facilities will enhance the social connection in the community, strengthening it when times get tough, living rurally.

“Living in an isolated area, it gets lonely,” Millie said.

“We want to make sure that in hard times, like when drought hits, that we have that

social connection and people feel emotionally connected to each other.

Millie is optimistic the funds raised will help improve the facilities and encourage more gatherings at the hall.

“We are hoping for a social gathering once a month at the hall, whether it is a barbecue or a family day.”

She said the committee has received lots of positive feedback from attendees.

“Everyone was appreciative that the night brought so many people together and that the sense of

community was brought back to what it had been in the past. It was the first event where everyone really got together in the same room,” Millie said.

It is the support from the community that ensures the continuity of events like these and builds facilities for the generations to come to enjoy. “ We ’ r e j u s t overwhelmed by the generosity of the community.

“Everyone is committed to improving the facility – and everyone appreciates the sense of community.”

Country, culture, community: top gong for Coona LALC Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council has been named ‘Local Aboriginal Lands Council of the Year’ at the All First Nations Media Awards, recognising its commitment to community, culture and country.

by MOLLY SHANNON Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council ( L A L C ) has made sig n i f ic a nt pr og r e s s over the past few years, with programs like the Murrunmala Dhawun Rangers, Cultural Housing Project and its continual support to the community and culture.

The All First Nations Media Awards night, held last weekend in Canberra, was a c elebr at ion of t he achievements of First Nat ion s bu s i ne s s e s , people and communities.

Coonabarabran LALC was nominated for the ‘Best Local Aboriginal L a nd C ou nc i l of the Year’ – and won!

CEO Brandon Nixon sa id the nom i n at ion came as a surprise. “ We r e c e i v e d a n ema i l f rom the A l l F i rst Nations med ia t eam t o say that we had a nomination in the category of Aboriginal L a nd C ou nc i l of the Year,” Mr Nixon said.

“At first, we were a bit like, ‘where’s this come from?’ And ‘who nom i n at ed us? ’ But , once we sat and thought about it we were pretty excited.”

Coonabarabran L A L C has worked tirelessly over the years, developing successful prog rams such as the Murrunmala Dhaw u n R a ngers, starting projects like the Cultural Housing, and supporting locals wh i le st r eng t hen i ng community and culture.

Murrunmala Dhawun R a n g er s l au nc he d a little over a year ago and has since proven to be a successful program.

It was created to help you nger G a m i la raay g e n e r at i o n s t o h e lp connect fur ther to Country by creating the opportunity for them to work in a team focused on looking after land.

The program has been praised by many and continues to flourish.

This year, the LALC a n nou n c e d pr o g r e s s on its Cultural Housing Project, which emphasises connection with commun ity, the la nd and encourages taking traditional culture and incorporating a modern spin. Coonabarabran LALC is the pilot site among f ive L A LCs receiving funding for the initiative.

By consulting closely with local First Nations people through meetings and surveys, the LALC identified the need for s a f e a n d a c c e s s i bl e housi ng for E lders.

Designs for the project are expected soon.

A licia Stanton, Coonabarabran LALC administration officer, said she was proud of what the L A LC team

has achieved and that the award reaffirms that they are on the right track.

“It makes your heart feel full – and you feel proud,” Ms Stanton said.

“All the stressful days and hard work just, it pays off.”

For M r Ni xon , the recognition reinforces confidence in the LALC team.

“It gives me a sense that the team that we’ve got here working at the L A LC is a good team and what we’re doing is obviously the right thing to do – it’s recognised by not only our community, but obviously the wider community as well,” he said.

“It gives us a bit of drive now to seek more oppor tun ities a nd t o ke ep g oi n g, b e c au s e wh at we ’r e doi n g i s obviously good and it’s been appreciated.”

Julie Okely, Indigenous founder of All First Nations, said the goal of the awards’ ceremony is to hold a space to give grass-root communities recognition they don’t often receive, such as the AFN Media Awards.

S h e s a i d Coonabarabran LALC’s win was well deserved a nd that the t eam should be proud of their achievement.

“I want to congratulate Coonabarabran’s Local Aboriginal Lands Council,” Ms Okely said “ I just want to say that I am proud of them and their people – and to keep up the g reat work they’re doing and walk in the path of their ancestors and to keep in strong spirit.”

Megan Cain accepted the award on behalf of Coonabarabran LALC, also walking away with ‘Artist of the Year’ and ‘Deadly Dressed – Gala Luxury’ awards.

In their acceptance speech, Coonabarabran L A L C thanked A ll F i rst Nations Med ia and acknowledged the work of board members, A b or ig i n a l R a nger s , CEO Brandon Nixon, and Alicia Stanton.

“To All First Nations Med i a , I ex t end ou r he a r t felt th a n k s for this recognition,” Coonabarabran LALC wrote. “ It stands not only as a testament to our collective efforts, but as a beacon that shines on the impor ta nce of A bor ig inal voices, stories, and caring for country, “As custodians of this land and community, we pledge to continue working hand-inhand, respecting our Elders, va luing each contribution and walking forward together “This honour belongs to every member of our

council, our community a nd t ho s e who h ave paved the way before us – let’s continue to make them proud.”

Burra Bee Dee remains central to the Coonabarabran LALC team, acknowledg ing

the importance of where t hey c ome f r om a nd how that continues to shape them not on ly per s on a l ly, but a s a community as well.

“Everything that we do really comes back to Burra Bee Dee,” Mr

Nixon said, “ T h at ’s wher e ou r people a re bu r ied , that’s where our people come from, that was the most significant site in Coona and is where it all started.”

The future is bright

for Coonaba rabran Local Aboriginal Lands Council, with quite a few major celebrations and projects ahead.

O n Wed nesd ay, 15 October, they will host Welcome Babies Back to Country at Neilson Park,

while funding from the NSW Aboriginal Land C ou n c i l C om mu n it y F und will also allow them to extend Burra B e e D e e c e m e t e r y, adding over 10 0 new plot s w it h pl a n s for seating and a barbecue.

St Lawrence’s cuts the ribbon After five years of planning, delays, and determination, St Lawrence’s Catholic Primary School has officially unveiled its long-awaited all-weather sports court and multipurpose room – a project that’s already making a big impact on students and the wider community.

St Lawrence’s officially opened its all-weather sports court and new multipurpose room on 31 July, marking an end to five years of hard work to bring the grounds to life.

Construction on the Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) took close to five years to get up and running, with plans originally put in place in early 2020. Due to COVID-19, construction was delayed

and students were unable to use the old courts for four years due to healthy and safety concerns.

In November of last year construction began and was completed in March this year, with the new courts now used for netball, basketball, tennis, pickleball and more.

Brand new grass was laid as well as netting that covers the entire sports complex, while the

grounds boast accessible access, refrigerated bubblers and better access to previous facilities such as the toilet block.

The project was funded by the Catholic Education Diocese of Bathurst (CEDB), which invested $946,000.

Attending the official opening of the complex were friends and family of the school, along with special guests from the

CEDB, executive director of schools Christina Trimble and Bishop Michael McKenna.

Additional special guests included Warrumbungle Shire mayor, Cr Kathryn Rindfleish, members of Prugger Group Pty Ltd who worked on construction, Father Sinclair, Mr Paul Crennan, chair of the CEDBL board, and Elder Uncle Casey Dowd and his wife, Beryl Dowd.

The ceremony was held at the new sports complex, where Bishop Michael McKenna blessed the facility and Father Sinclair led guests in prayer and St Lawrence’s Student Choir wowed attendees with their performance of the school song.

Director of schools, Ms Trimble cut the ribbon, officially opening the all-weather sports court.

“It was delightful to be here with the school,” Ms Trimble said “To see the beautiful facility and celebrate it with the staff and students.”

Following the service, students eagerly showed off their new pickleball court – testing their skills in a short game.

Attendees were then encouraged to join in on morning tea at the school, after Bishop Michael McKenna blessed the school’s brand new multipurpose room.

Bishop McKenna said

he enjoyed the day out and was proud of the school’s hard work on delivering the project. “ T o d a y w a s wonderful,” Bishop McKenna said.

“I’ve been coming here for 16 years and we have had a lot of great facilities built with our [CEDBL] funds.

“I hope it will be a great resource to not only the school, but for the whole community.”

Prugger Group Pty Ltd and local contractors worked closely with St Lawrence’s and CEDBL to ensure the facility provided all that was needed for the students.

Project director Anthony Prugger said it was great to see it all finished.

“It’s really nice to see it all being enjoyed,” Mr Prugger said.

“The team I had were all locals, and it just shows that big projects such as this can be done by locals too.”

Megan Redden, St Lawrence’s School sports’ coordinator, said students were enjoying the new facilities.

“The kids are really proud of it,” Mrs Redden said.

“We love it, we use it four out of five days.”

Mrs Redden also worked closely with Mr Prugger for the design of the facility, making sure the COLA was not only functional and catering to the sporting needs of the students, but also beautiful.

School principal Natasha Milford said she was very pleased with how the complex looks and was happy to see friends and family of the school in attendance at the official opening.

“We haven’t been able to use the COLA for four years,” Mrs Milford said.

“So its nice to have that facility back – it’s safe and the school is really happy with how it turned out.”

Buyers flock to Elstow bull sale Elstow Charolais recently conducted its annual on-property bull sale, attracting repeat and first-time buyers.

“The raw data we received f rom the bulls, such as fat scans and eye muscle area

(EMA), were all quite impressive.”

Bulls were purchased by buyer s located t h r o u g h o u t N S W, i ncl ud i ng A r m i da l e, Casino, Na r rab r i, Mani l la, Gunnedah, Coonamble, and Baradine, with demand extending interstate to Roma, Queensland.

The sale saw sol id buyer interest, with 80 per cent of the offering sold on the day.

Top price The top-priced bull – Lot 12 ‘Elstow Vee 8’ – sold to Baradine local,

Dennis Fitzgerald, for $15,000.

The polled sire not only topped the sale but a l so the weig ht range at an impressive 930 kg.

M r F i t zg e ra l d h a s been a returning client of the Charolais stud for the past 15 years, returning for the quality and temperament of Elstow’s genetics.

He commented o n t h e s i r e, s a y i n g “ I wa s d ra w n to h i s confirmation and growth rate.”

Shannon noted

that growth rate and tremendous length were traits that stood out in the bull, cont r i buti ng to h i s ample weight for age.

S h e s a i d s h e wa s pleased by the overall attendance, saying the sale was well supported

by a range of clients.

“We had a lot of return and new buyers from stud and commercial operations this year, which was great.”

Shannon highlighted the volume of positive fe e d b a c k re ce i ve d from returning

buyers, who reported improvements in t e m p e r a m e n t within thei r progeny after introducing th e s t ud ' s g en et i cs, encouraging lowstress stock handling and enhancing weight gain.

The McConnaughty family extended their thank s to a l l buye r s and wished them success with their new additions.

“We just hope the bulls go on to do a great job in their programs,” Shannon said.

Nickname: The Owl...Who? Who? H ow d i d yo u co m e t o l i ve i n Coonabarabran? We were living at Tweed Heads and my mother and father came to Coonabarabran to work for his father, Fred Hawkins, in the Royal Hotel.

Where would people recognise your face from? Not so much my face as my distinctive voice!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be an air hostess or a Tresillian nurse.

What is the most interesting job you’ve ever had? The most i nte resti ng job I eve r had was definitely female bar attendant at the Imperial Hotel.

Whe re i s you r go-to spot i n Coonabarabran? The coffee shops and Prezzies.

Best thing about living in Coonaba rab ran? The people, the lifestyle, the natural beauty, and because of a close family member needing full-time care, Coonabarabran has the wonderful Cooinda.

What event in Coonabarabran do you look forward to most every year? The event I look forward to most each year would be Christmas a n d th e Coo n a ba ra b ra n Cu p weekend.

If you could have anyone around for dinner, who would it be and what would you cook? At the moment, it would be Robbie Barrett from the travel agency in Dubbo and it would be an easy roast dinner.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given? Don’t look back, you’re not going that way. Be kind to yourself. Opinions are like bum holes – everyone has one and no one wants to hear yours.

How do you wind down after a long day? After a long day, I wind down by putting on my PJs and dressing gown and drinking black tea.

What is your favourite place to visit on a road trip? ALL roads lead to the Gold Coast.

If you could make one rule for everyone in the world to follow, what would it be? World peace.

What is the most valuable life lesson you have learned so far? Never presume to know what people bring to the table.

What are the top three things on your bucket list? The three things on my bucket list at the moment are England, Ireland and Scotland.

If you could instantly be an expert in any field, what would it be? I AM an expert in time wasting.

She gave an excellent speech, a nd ou r cl ub i s ve r y confident that Georgia will do well at the next level of the competition to be held in Dubbo in September.

Georgia was also challenged to give a two-minute impromptu speech, telling us where her favourite place in Coonabarabran is and w hy. S h e w a s g i ve n two minutes to prepare her response and she ca m e b a c k w i t h a n incredible reply – and w e d i s c ove r e d t h a t her favourite place is home.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Warrumbungle Children’s Services Children’s Art Exhibition On Thursday evening, 4 September, the Coonabarabran Town Hall came alive with colour, creativity, and celebration as families gathered for the Spring Art Exhibition and disco hosted by Children’s Services.

The idea for the exhibition began back in March, when preschool children and educators at Yuluwirri Kids started talking about fundraising and how communities can work together to support a cause. The children decided they wanted to raise money for new toys – and what better way than by showcasing and selling their own artwork?

Inspired by the recent Coonabarabran Show and previous art displays, the children explored the world of local art through visits to SPACE Gallery, the Dunedoo Art Exhibition, and the Sky River Walk mural and sculptures.

Their enthusiasm soon spread to other services, including the Monkey

Room, Connect Five, and OOSH, with everyone keen to join in.

Local families and artists collaborated with the children to create unique and meaningful pieces for the exhibition.

As excitement grew, organisers decided to add an evening disco to the event, making it a true celebration of community spirit.

The night was a resounding success.

Families admired the children’s artwork, many of which were snapped up for a donation, before hitting the dance floor.

The event also featured a tasty sausage sizzle, kindly run by volunteers from the Coonabarabran Unicorns league-tag team.

Tooraweenah Public Sydney excursion Our recent four-day excursion to Sydney was an outstanding success, offering students a rich blend of educational, cultural, and recreational experiences.

The journey began with a smooth flight from Dubbo to Sydney, setting the tone for an engaging trip packed with diverse activities.

The first afternoon was filled with visits to some of Sydney’s most popular attractions, including the Sea Life Aquarium and Sydney Tower Eye, where students had the opportunity to get up close with fascinating marine life and view the city at sunset.

Exploring the historic Rocks district through a guided walking tour brought the city’s colonial past to life, providing valuable context to Australia’s early European settlement.

Students also enjoyed a memorable visit to Sydney’s iconic landmarks, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House foreshore, enhancing their appreciation for these architectural marvels.

The itinerary included reflective visits to important sites such as the ANZAC Memorial and Hyde Park Barracks, deepening students’ understanding of Australia’s history and heritage. A visit to the Australian Museum including its special exhibit ‘Relics,’ a Lego display, topped off a memorable day.

A highlight of the excursion was the convict history tour on Cockatoo Island, where students stepped back in time and learned about the lives of convicts and shipbuilders in the 19th century.

Year 4 Retreat Day On Wednesday, 10 September, the Year 4 children took part in a very special retreat day with Mrs Harris and Father Karl.

The theme of the day was The Beauty of God’s creation – a chance for the students to pause,

reflect, and think deeply about the beauty of the world around them and the responsibility we all share to protect and care for it.

Throughout the day, the children explored how they can be stewards of creation in their everyday lives – whether

by showing kindness to animals, looking after the environment, or simply appreciating the gifts of nature that God has provided. They enjoyed discussions, creative activities, and quiet moments of reflection, all helping them to connect more closely with their

faith and the world they live in.

It was a truly enriching day for the Year 4 students, one that not only deepened their understanding of God’s creation, but also inspired them to take action in caring for it with love and gratitude.

Coonabarabran Public about native Australian animals, and explored Madame Tussauds, where we saw lifelike wax figures of famous celebrities, historical icons, and sporting legends. It was exciting to get up close and take photos with some of our favourite personalities!

The trip balanced these educational activities with moments of relaxation and fun, including swimming at the hotel pool, watching a movie in 4D and playing ten-pin bowling.

T h r o u g h o u t the excursion, the students demonstrated enthusiasm, curiosity, and respect, making the most of every learning opportunity.

The shared experience has not only enriched their knowledge but also created lasting memories and strengthened bonds among peers.

through the 70s and 80s, and then leap forward into the digital age with hyperpop made famous

by TikTok, which brings us right into 2025.

The whole company will then join together for a grand finale of songs we know you’ll want to sing along to.

When the circus came to town For the first time since COVID-19, the circus rolled in to Coonabarabran, bringing with it a night to remember that was fun and exciting for the whole family.

Brophy’s Circus, family owned and operated, arrived in Coona on 29 August, and performed over t wo d ay s w it h a range of night and matinee shows.

The circus included aerobatic stunts, deathdefying acts, knife th r ow i ng, clow ns and much more to excite onlookers. “ We ’ v e r e a l ly made the show to cater for families for the show to be fun and exciting,” Mr Warren Brophy, owner of Brophy’s Circus, said. “ We h av e t he Globe of Death with the motorcycles in the cage – which is a high-adrenaline performance – and it’s dangerous and exciting. Then we have plate-spinning clowns for the kids t o ke ep ever yone happy.

“So, its a very good mix of a show and ever yone loves it, all the performers really put their heart and soul into it – it really is a passion project.”

Around 150 t icket s were sold for the first night’s show. Unlike years past, there were no animals in the ring.

M r Brophy said animals are no lon ger p er m it t e d in circuses, which he descr ibed as “disappointing.”

COVID-19 had a big impact on M r Br ophy a nd h i s fa m i ly, who have been in the circus industry for seven

generations. “ Over COV I D, I was out of the circus and had a regular job, and I missed it terribly and wanted t o get back i nt o performing and keep touring,” he said.

“The show, as this ver sion , h a s on ly been touring sort of since last year, but my father and my grandparents toured Brophy’s Circus up to 30, 40 years ago. “ It ’s a whole family affair – so my parents are here, my brother, my wife, my

children.”

Brophy ’s Ci rcus has a cast and crew of around 16 members, with everyone pit ch ing in where needed.

Performers L exi and Ava have been with the circus for two years and four months respectively.

What drew them to the lifestyle was their love for performing a nd doi ng what they ’re passionate about day in and day out.

“I think just always having that passion

for being in the air and being on stage and just wanting to perform to a crowd,” Lexi said.

“Silks is a f avou r it e , I h ave a lot of fun while I’m in the air and s e ei ng ever yone ’s expressions to drops or poses – I like to fly and spin.”

As for whether they feel nervous before a performance, Ava said the more you do it, the easier it was. “ My f i r s t we ek with the group I was super scared every

time before I went on, but after that I got fairly used to it,” Ava said.

“It’s always great to perform here, I like being in a tent, it’s a very intimate crowd and everything is quite close,” Mr Brophy said. “ Every show, no matter where you are, is always enjoyable.”

WEATHER WATCH During last week, a small cut-off low pressure became detached from a deep complex low pressure and brought mainly light showers and thunderstorms – at first to Victoria and then moved northwards to near Cobar on Tuesday night 9 September, with scattered heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms.

Cobar recorded 52mms to 9am on 10 September, the wettest September day in 144 years of records – surpassing the previous wettest September days in 1897 and 1997.

In easter n South Australia, Kadina recorded 48.2mms, breaking the previous wettestever September day of 36.3mms 115 years ago in 1910.

Peak Hill, with 62mms, also had its wettest-ever September day in 135 years of records. The previous wettest September day was 48.8mms in early September of 1993.

Wellington’s 85.6mms was also the wettest September day in 144 years of records – the previous being 76mms in 1892.

The cut-off low pressure has moved eastwards and 19mms fell at Rutherglen.

Heavy rain has reached Sydney yet again, with 122mms falling

to 9am on 11 September – the wettest September day since 1879.

Since the beginning of July up to mid September, a total of 722mms has fallen – easily a record for this period in 165 years of records in Sydney.

The annual total to date in Sydney has reached 1542mms, more than 300mms above the annual average.

This was the eighth wettest to this point behind 1860, 1890, 1950, 1956, 1963, 1990 and 2022. All of those seven cases led to warmer and wetter conditions, particularly in Victoria from September to February, with a high frequency of thunderstorms.

It has been an odd situation as far as weather events are concerned since August. For example, Lightning Ridge, which up to the end of August has had 530mms, which was the town’s wettest January to August period since 1976.

Major centres within 200kms of Lightning Ridge have had wellbelow-average rainfalls to the end of August.

The record 208mms last March at Lightning Ridge was due to a cut-off low pressure which stalled and then decayed suddenly.

Centenary tee-off brings golfers together It was a day of golf and memories when the Baradine Golf club celebrated its 100-year milestone in style.

community pride.

C l u b s e c r e t a r y, Merv Sutherland said approximately 50 golfers played in the three-person Ambrose event over 18 holes.

“Teams came from Coonabarabran, Tooraweenah and the su r rounding distr ict to enjoy the beautiful weather and good company,” Merv said.

“I am extremely p ro u d o f o u r s m a l l , but hard-working

committee. Our committee members, along with volunteers from the community, provide hours of work to make our golf course ready fo r p lay each week.

“The amazing Betty Olsen and Mary Martin have generously given up their time to work on our beautiful gardens, which are now looking better than ever. But our club would not be as successful, if not for the support shown from our local community and local business houses.

“It was great to see some of our senior citizens from Baradine here celebrating with us on Saturday afternoon on the verandah of the new club house. I don’t want to single anyone out, but I’m sure most would have a story to tel l about either the creation of the original golf club or perhaps a memory of playing an amazing round here at the Windy Pines.”

Junior golf clinic Baradine Golf Club was also the venue for a free junior golfing clinic on Friday, 5 September, where coach Ga r y Begg had 60 junior players par ticipating from Baradine and Gwabegar schools.

“We are hoping that these free coaching clinics, provided by Golf NSW for our juniors, may result in more players taking up the game of golf in the future,” Merv said.

“This centenary event has been a wonderful chance to celebrate eve r y t h i n g t h e c l u b s t a n d s f o r. I t ’ s n o t just about the past 100 years – it’s about enjoying the moment together and looking ahead to the future of the club.”

The style of dress may have changed but today’s lady golfers are just as keen.

AROUND THE TRAPS VETERANS’ GOLF Tuesday 9 September Dick Clark was the winner of the Coonabarabran Golf Club’s veterans’ competition played on Tuesday, 9 September, scoring 35 points.

Runner-up was Dave Bunyan, 37.

A happy day was had by all.

Tuesday 16 September Andy Galvin took the win in last Tuesday’s veterans golf competion, with Geoff Gasior the runner-up.

CHICKEN RUN Sunday, 14 September The Coonabarabran Golf Club’s Sunday morning chicken run was played over the front nine on 14 September, with Dave Bunyan and Dick Clark in the winners’ circle, scoring 22 points.

Balls were won by Kurt Pincham and Stass Agalidis, 21 points.

Next Sunday’s chicken run, on 21 September, will be played over the back nine.

Happy birthday to Aden Larance for last Sunday.

On Saturday, he turned his golf on and had a red hot score of 39 points to take the win from a couple golfers on 35. On a regular day these scores would have won.

Ball winners were Zoe and Jane both 35, Frank Nottle and frank Clifton 34.

Brad Weatherall and Zoe played their mixed match play also. With both being on 10 it was going to be a long day, and it was – they had to play 20 holes to find the winner. Noting they both birdied the 19th and Zoe had a par on the 20th for the win.

We are still waiting for other games to be played so please try get them done ASAP. Coming up is the Westpac Golf Day – 20 September. Please put a team together to support this day. Please get to club early so cards and tees can be sorted.

New scholarships boost junior boarding at TAS The Armidale School’s bespoke new Junior Boarding precinct is proving to be a great success for students, staff and parents alike - with improved academic, social and mental health outcomes just a few of the tangible benefits.

Under the new structural arrangement introduced this year, Year 6 and 7 boarders reside in two adjacent but secure boarding houses, Dangar/Moyes - the girls in one, boys in the other – that share a common courtyard between.

Further, the new physical organisation of boarding arrangements is underpinned by academic and pastoral innovations that are making positive impacts.

Academically, students are supported during evening ‘prep’ (homework) time by teachers from the day school, as well as residential staff, with Maths and English a special focus.

At weekends, an organised recreation program engages students with activities as varied as ten-pin bowling, bushwalking, workshops or day-trips to nearby towns or even the coast.

And while all boarders have had limited

access to technology out of class time, a ban on smart phones for Year 7 and below implemented this year has been so successful it will be rolled out to Year 8, from 2026.

“Junior boarders can only bring a basic phone with them, a tool to just call and text home.

While parents were overwhelmingly supportive when it was introduced, a few did warn us there could be tantrums – however to our surprise and relief, this quickly subsided and the students found themselves having more meaningful conversations with their family and friends, both in-person and on the phone, rather than messaging on apps and scrolling through social media with all the potential negative effects that can have,” Head of Junior Boarding, Jordan Lane observed.

Other benefits have included increased activity in school recreational activities, healthy friendships between boarders and day students, students taking initiative to create their own fun and a generally more positive outlook on life.

TAS Director of Boarding David Drain said evidence-based research also supported the

decision, as well as the Australian government introducing social media laws including a ban on social media account for children under the age of 16, from later this year.

“We are proud to have been one of the schools paving the way in this area and the knowledge that other schools are following the same path that also affirms our belief that we are on the right track regarding the best interests of our students,” he said.

So popular has been the interest in the Junior Boarding program at TAS that the School is funding new Regional Boarding Scholarships for Year 6 entry.

These scholarships, for all-round students committed to making the most of the opportunities on offer, will have tenure for Middle School (Year 6-8) and Senior School (9-12).

Rural confidence softens as farmers Country Mayors report mixed outlook on year ahead Sentiment in Australia’s agricultural sector has softened over the winter months, as the nation’s farmers contend with higher input costs and mixed seasonal conditions, the latest Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey has found.

The survey, released in late August, found net farm sector confidence has eased to a neutral reading of zero (down from five per cent in the previous survey).

This means the same number of farmers (29 per cent) now expect conditions in the agricultural economy to improve over the next 12 months as those who anticipate conditions to weaken.

Farmers reported feeling most positive about seasonal conditions and commodity prices, although producers in Victoria and South Australia in particular remained concerned about weather.

High input costs, as well as concerns about government policies and intervention, were the main causes for pessimism.

A total of 39 per cent of farmers expect conditions will stay the same in the year ahead.

Rabobank group executive for Country Banking Australia Marcel van Doremaele said although overall rural confidence has softened over the winter months, it was encouraging to see that a large proportion of farmers still expect conditions to remain stable or improve over the next 12 months.

“This highlights the resilience of

Australian farm businesses – they are navigating rising input costs and ongoing seasonal variability, but are capitalising on the positive drivers of solid commodity prices, primarily in livestock sectors, and favourable seasonal conditions in key regions,” he said.

Production costs were top of mind for Australian farmers this survey – which was completed last month* – with the rising price of inputs, including fertiliser and feed, emerging as the leading cause for pessimism (for 41 per cent of farmers, up from 25 per cent last survey).

Input costs were the main reason for concern in Tasmania, Queensland and NSW, however seasonal factors outstripped costs in Victoria and South Australia, and WA farmers were most worried about government intervention and policies.

“Global demand drivers are pushing urea prices skyward, so we expect to see this volatility play out as Australian growers update their farm input budgets over the coming months,” Mr van Doremaele said.

“The high prices for feed over the past 12 months will also be felt for a considerable time by many producers in southern areas, especially those who are still relying on purchased hay and grain to maintain stock until their pasture gets back on track after prolonged – and in many areas, ongoing – dry conditions.”

chair slams plans to cut bank jobs Rick Firman OAM, chairman of the NSW Country Mayors Association, has slammed plans by the ANZ to cut 3500 full time jobs, fearing the decision will result in yet more bank closures or a further reduction in services in rural communities across Australia.

ANZ, one of the nation’s big four banks, closed its Wee Waa branch in 2021, followed by its Gunnedah and Moree branches in 2023.

“Every single time a bank closes its doors in a remote, rural or regional area, they have made the decision to shift the costs of doing business directly onto their customers,” Cr Firman said.

“In remote, rural and regional areas, a bank closure means that customers are forced to travel sometimes hundreds of kilometres to reach their nearest bank branch. Are those customers receiving any compensation for that cost? No, they are not. It’s not just the costs associated with travel but the time lost from their own businesses and personal lives.”

“How many inquiries into banking do we need for the government to say this is not acceptable? By the time we get any action from a federal government on this issue, it will be too late, banking in rural communities will be dead.

Cr Firman said Australian banks are some of the most profitable in the world”.

“When will greed for more and more returns finally give way to customer service and equitable access? The decisions banks are making to withdraw services from rural communities is insidious,” he said.

“We constantly see a pattern of behaviour that is deliberately designed to justify closures. First there is a lowering of staff, next the hours are cut, then there are fewer services followed by advice the data shows customers are choosing online banking over face-to-face. Finally, we are told that because of falling use, the bank branch will be closed. Well, no surprises there, the outcome has been deliberately engineered by the bank.”

The ANZ decision follows a decision by Bendigo Bank to forgo its regional identity when it announced closures of 28 bank agencies and some bank branches from October 2025. NAB this week announced the loss of over 400 jobs when it relocates positions in its technology and enterprise areas to India and Vietnam. While Bendigo has announced the axing of a further 145 jobs in technology which is likely to impact on 637 workers. Meanwhile the Bank of Queensland is axing 200 staff and offshoring half of its contact centre to India.

“The constant refrain that Australia Post Banking can fill the gaping hole left by bank closures shows the banks’ alarming ignorance of both the capacity of Australia Post branches to be a bank and underplays the important role that a full-service bank plays in the economic growth of regional, rural and remote communities.”

Man charged after investigation into supply of drugs in Walgett, Bourke battery epa

A man has been charged with drug and domestic violence offences in relation to alleged offences in western communities.

Strike Force MENINGIE II is a Central North Police District-led investigation into the supply of prohibited drugs, namely methylamphetamine, in the Walgett and Bourke areas.

Following inquiries on Wednesday, September 10, officers from Central North Police District, with the assistance of the Dog Unit and Western Region Domestic

Violence High Risk Arrest Team, attended an address on Duff Street, Walgett and arrested a 39-year-old man.

He was taken to Walgett Police Station where he was charged with two counts of breach apprehended domestic violence order, destroy or damage property and knowingly take part in supply prohibited drug greater than indictable quantity.

He was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 4 on Thursday, September 11.

WEST RFS highlights importance NORTH MAGAZINE CLASSIFIEDS of preseason preparedness As the new fire season approaches, the NSW Rural Fire Service is highlighting the importance of preseason preparedness – with the recent Super AGM at Croppa Creek standing as a shining example of community spirit and collaboration.

More than 40 members attended the combined annual general meeting, bringing together brigades that cover much of the area north of the Gwydir Highway to the Queensland border, and east of the Newell Highway across Moree and Gwydir Shires.

The gathering focused on ensuring members have the training, support, and confidence they need when fire activity increases.

This included opportunities for more localised training – even extending to casual or transient harvest workers who may be on the land during critical times.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of long service medals to members, recognising and thanking them for their years of

dedication and service to their communities.

These moments of recognition remind us that the strength of the RFS lies in the commitment of its volunteers. And the results are already being felt.

From this event, training was successfully held at the Coolatai Hotel, where 25 members completed their Basic Firefighter training – a massive win for the community and a direct outcome of the Super AGM. “We’re not looking for more members – we’re making sure the ones we have are supported when they need it,” a district spokesperson said.

“Harvest is the lifeblood of our area. That’s why we encourage everyone: if you see a column of smoke this season while on the header, check in with your neighbour. “ Their problem can quickly become yours. It takes a village to protect a village.” “ Preparedness doesn’t just rest with brigades – every landholder, renter, and family can take

Fund to get Moree schoolkids back in the water Moree Plains Shire Council has announced the establishment of the Learn to Swim School Travel Support program, and eligible schools can apply for funding to transport students to attend swimming lessons.

Ongoing work at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre (MAAC) means local schools are unable to offer students the opportunity to access swimming lessons.

Council has approved the $30,000 program, which will facilitate transport for students from Moree to a public swimming facility within the zhire, where the students will participate in the NSW Department of Education’s School Swimming and Water Safety Program.

Cr Susannah Pearse, mayor of Moree Plains Shire Council, said the aim of the program was to ensure the children of Moree Plains Shire are safe in the water.

“Before the demolition of our 50m pool, young students who could not competently swim 50m had the opportunity to access swimming lessons as an intensive block at the MAAC,” said Cr Pearse.

“Unfortunately, due to pool closures and delays, Moree schools have stopped offering this service and we now have a vast number of local children who cannot swim.

“This $30,000 program will facilitate school bus services to transport children to a pool within our shire for lessons, and we encourage all eligible schools to apply before the

AgQuip 2025 shines with almost 45,000 visitors soaking up new attractions Last month’s AgQuip by AgTrader may have been a little soggy, but as the rain tumbled down at Gunnedah, 44,193 visitors soaked up a range of new attractions with the AgTrader Tractor Games sponsored by Kia proving a smash hit, University of New England’s career panels proved popular with aspiring agriculture students and exhibitors reporting positive results from the event.

One of the exhibitors thrilled by the crowds’ attendance was Shayne Horsfall, from Stockline Trailers at Lake Cargelligo. “The Tuesday was much busier this year compared to last. Even when the rain came in on Wednesday, there was still a lot of genuine interest in our trailers" Mr Horsfall said.

Thomas Thorncroft, of Uniplan from Armidale, said "We enjoyed a significant increase in enquiry over the first day and a half in our modular housing, especially our worker accommodations. We received some strong leads and genuine interest in our products."

AgTrader, who sponsored this year’s event, has already seen a lift in business off the back of AgQuip.

With more than 800 exhibitors and 2500 brands on display, it was a great opportunity to bring together buyers and sellers alike.
