Two charged after man set alight in Cowper St Two people faced court earlier this week after another man was allegedly set alight in Coonabarabran. At a round 6pm on Monday, 13 October 2025, a 19-year-old man was walking on Cowper Street, Coonabarabran, when he was approached by a man and two women. Police have been told a member of the group allegedly poured a liquid onto the man before he caught alight. Passers-by extinguished the f i re and the man before he was taken to hospital for treatment. A s h o r t t i m e l a te r, police were called to the

same street after reports of a public-order incident. Of f ice r s at tached to Orana Mid Western Police District responded with the assistance of detectives. A cr i me scene wa s established and a 45-yearold woman, 19-year-old man and 17-year-old girl were arrested at a nearby property. They were all taken to Coonabarabran Police Station where the man was charged with cause grievous bodily harm to

person with intent, and affray; the older woman was also charged with affray. They we re refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 4 on Tuesday. The teenage girl was released pending further investigation. Community impact The Coonabarabran com mun it y has been left in shock following the i ncident, w ith many unaware of the seriousness of the event.

“Even though I heard all the commotion I didn’t realise the seriousness of the situation and was shocked to hear what had taken place...a bit too close to home and comfort,” one community member, who wishes to remain anonymous, said. “I really don’t know what to say, but a big ‘wow’. Later on, when there were two cops and about 20 young people, that was scary because it looked like it was going to get out of hand. Then,

reinforcements arrived thank goodness and dispersed the crowd.” Members of the co m m u n it y sa i d th ey could not believe something like this could happen in a small town like Coonabararban. “ It’s n ot s o m et h i n g that you expect to ever see in your life, let alone i n C o o n a b a r a b r a n ,” anothe r communit y member said. “It’s pretty traumatic for the people involved, especially the ones that

helped the victim. “It’s normally a quiet and peaceful street, but it just seems to be going in the opposite way.” Many were horrified at the scale of the altercation and said that while there had been incidents in the past, this was the most extreme event that had taken place. A n y o n e w i t h information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Forensic investigators from NSW Police collected evidence from the scene on Tuesday, 14 October.
