Council push forward for community upgrades There was plenty of good news to come out of the latest meeting of Warrumbungle Shire Council, held at the Council Chambers in Coonabarabran on Thursday, 21 April.

by CHRIS WARD A nu m b e r o f it em s were up for discussion by councillors, one of which was the issue surrounding the Stop ‘n Play Park in Coonabarabran Just days after being opened to the public, the park was cordoned off following safety concerns in regards to high voltage power lines directly above the facility.

At the April Council meeting it was revealed that approx imately $63,000 remains in the budget for the Stop ‘n Play Park. Council will investigate the use of these

funds to have the power lines relocated.

A Council representative sa id they were sti l l looking over quotes from accredited professionals to move the powerlines.

Warrumbungle Shire Council mayor, Cr Ambrose Doolan said quotes ranged from $80,000 to $110,000.

“So, we would be looking at hav ing to cover the difference at this stage,” Cr Doolan said. “ But one c ou nc i l lor brought up a good point in the meeting, suggesting we approach the contractors to see if they will assist in any way.”

Cr Doolan acknowledged

the situation wasn’t ideal, but said he was adamant lessons had been learnt, which would help avoid similar situations in the future.

“That development on that type of land didn’t require a Development A ppl ic at ion ( DA ),” C r Doolan said.

“If that was a private bu i ld the issue wou ld have been picked up in the application process.

“So, moving forward, we will be looking at taking the approach of using the principals of a DA.” Housing subdivision Council has identified the need for f u r ther

housing in Coonabarabran and has tabled land in Reservoir Street (the old Chook Farm) as a possible future subdivision.

A motion was put through at the most recent meeting for a business case to look into future options for the site.

Cr Doolan, who has c h a mp i o n e d t h e i d e a for some time, said he would like to see the land developed.

He said though it wasn’t Council’s forte, they were eagerly waiting for advice on the best way to move forward with the project.

“We have approached Landcom for some help and

advice on the situation,” Cr Doolan said.

“This is not Council’s day job - it’s not what we do, but Landcom is a State G over nment author ity that specialises in this type of thing.”

Number three oval facelift C o onaba rabra n’s number three oval will receive a much-needed facelift in the near future.

The oval and facilities,

which arguably sees the most use in town and is home to at least three different sporting clubs, has been in a state of disrepair for some time.

Now, due to a Federal Government g rant, $580,000 will be thrown at it to give it a new lease of life.

T he existing change rooms will undergo more refurbishments, with a new set of change rooms to

be constructed along with a storage shed.

W hile Cr Doolan couldn’t yet provide a start date for commencement of works, he said it was great news for the town and the sporting precinct.

The work will complement the newlyc onstr uc t ed bou nd a r y fence and a fresh painting of the existing change rooms.

Warrumbungle Shire Council is encouraging the local landowners to consider developing or selling vacant residential land.

New leader for 2357 group Local organisation, 2357 Development Inc has experienced a tumultuous time in recent years, but is now back on track with a new chairperson at the helm.

Na relle P f ief fer has t a ken on t he le ad i n g role and is passionate about delivering outcomes that will benefit Coonabarabran and its residents.

Ms P f ieffer said the g roup had rema i ned dormant due to COVID-19 and other challenges, but said her new role seems to be the perfect fit to get the ball rolling once again.

“I’m passionate about community development a nd I wa nt t o ma ke Coonabarabran a place people want to visit and stay,” she said. “ We w i l l d o t h a t by co ord i nati ng a nd

facilitating Council funds in a way it can be used to benefit the community.”

T he g roup held a meeting last Thursday, 21 Apr i l, where Ms Pfieffer said many items were discussed including ideas that had stemmed from the “ Building o u r Wa r r u m b u n g l e s Community” workshops.

“Those guys have been working on a bit of an action plan for ideas to help develop the town.

“A dog park was one of a few ideas that was brought up.”

Ms Pfieffer said the 2357 Development meetings were open to community

members who had ideas on bettering the town. “ One of our main objectives is to listen to a nd i nt eract w ith the c om mu n it y memb er s on what their thoughts are on improving Coonabarabran,” she said.

“Gathering ideas together enhances the town and draws people into it.”

As the new chairperson, M s P f ief fer sa id 2357 Development Inc aims to coordinate and oversee f u nd i n g a nd t o wo rk t ogether as a team t o develop good outcomes for the Coonabarabran community.

ANZAC grant honours Baradine veterans Two small projects that educate the community on the contribution of district servicemen and women in war have received funding.

The CWA project will create a garden corner that pays tribute to local women who served in war.

The Progress Association project will help to establish a spirit of A N Z AC memor ia l garden at the front of the Baradine Memorial Hall.

T h e A N Z A C C ommu n ity Gra nts Program provides grants of up to $2000 for a range of projects that either pr omo t e appr e c i at ion a nd u nder st a nd i ng of the service and sacrifice of military ser v ice per s on nel , or supp or t activities and services to enhance the wellbeing of the NSW veteran community.

Announcing the grants in a media release, M i n ist er for Vet era ns A f f a i r s D av id E l l iot t acknowledged the efforts of veteran groups. “ More than $56k w i l l b e pr ov ide d t o a ra nge of projects that

commemorate and educate NSW communities about the service and sacrifices of cu r rent a nd former military servicemen and servicewomen,” Minister Elliott said.

“Some of these great projects and initiatives recognise Australia’s war service history, educate a new generation a nd support the well-being of the NSW veteran community.”

President of the Ba rad ine R SL Subbranch, Brad Edwards sa id th at the A N Z AC Commun ity g rants provides the opportunity for local organisations to honour and commemorate those who have served our nation in all wars.

“Current and former ser v i ng members, as well as their families, play an important role in our community and the success of these projects demonstrate our desire to acknowledge that role,” Mr Edwards said. “ T he B a rad i ne R S L Sub-branch looks forward to participating in the development of both projects a nd cong ratulates both organisations on their success.”

RURAL ADDRESSING

Having a properly marked and identifiable rural address helps travellers, service providers and emergency services locate rural properties. The black and white numbers on properties along rural roads are for Ambulance and other emergency services as well as other service providers such as Australia Post, Essential Energy and Telecommunication companies, to be able to quickly and easily locate someone who needs help.

This is a reminder to property owners that the numbering on their gate posts need to be to be maintained and in a clear and very visible position. If numbers are missing they will need to be replaced.

Let’s “Light the Night” If Baradine’s impressive Light the Night event was anything to go by, the Coonabarabran version will be spectacular, with a big evening of entertainment!

Some of the town’s landmarks will be lit up in a colourful display of light tonight, Thursday, 28 April, with the event kicking off at 5pm.

T h e r e w i l l b e l a te night shopping oppor tunities with a vast a r ray of pop - up ma r kets, whi le and many businesses in the vicinity will extend their trading hours.

pe r fect oppo r tun it y for residents to enjoy a night out and pick up a Mother’s Day gift at the same time.

“With all the different s ta l l s a n d b e i n g j u s t before Mother’s Day, it is perfect timing to get something special for mum,” Mrs Evans said.

Along with latenight shopping, a host of activities and enter tainment will be on offer throughout the evening.

A big drawcard will be the familyor ientated scavenger hunt that will include the many participating shop fronts.

Other entertainment on the night will include John Hoisier performing in the plaza, while the Samar itans will be making bead bands w ith sta r s fo r young festival goers.

POLICE NEWS Arrests made in operation boil Coonabarabran Police have been kept busy over the Easter holiday break.

Not only were the boys and girls in blue enforcing double demerits on our roads but they conducted operation Boil.

Both general duty and h ighway pat r ol c r ews were tasked with carrying out the operation which targeted alcohol related offences including domestic violence and traffic related offences.

D u r i ng t h at p er io d police made a number of

arrests which included a 56 year old man who was charged with driving under the influence after leaving a local hotel and crashing his vehicle.

Another man, aged 53 was charged with assault for an attack on another male allegedly due to a dispute about drugs.

Acting inspector Robert B ayley sa id despit e “generally high” crowd numbers in the area for A NZ AC Day the wider population were generally wel l behaved w ith no significant issues occurring over the weekend.

Men’s Shed now a safer place to work Coonabarabran Men’s Shed members can now work their magic in much safer conditions.

The organisation was able to secure funding to purchase a new table saw which features safety options not available on its previous saw.

The $3200 Festool saw has a safety guard which makes it near impossible for fingers to get too close, eliminating the possibility of injuries.

Norm Buchanan, from the Men’s Shed, said it was an important piece of machinery that gets used daily.

“It means we can work in a safer environment and prevent injuries,” Mr Buchanan said.

“I t h a s a f e w mo re features than the old one and you can change angles on it as well.

“This new saw really is state of the art.

“Some of our equipment is starting to age, so we’re always looking at updating and improving the safety of our machinery.”

Mr Buchanan said the new addition even has its own dust extractor.

“Eventually we would like to have a full dust

extraction system for all of the tools we have here,” he said.

Men’s Shed members will continue to apply for grants towards equipment upgrades, as well as conducting their own fundraising activities.

Each week the Coonabarabran Men’s Shed raffle off a trailer

load of wood, selling tickets from outside the newsagency in John Street every Thursday morning.

“Selling those raffle tickets are our main source of fund-raising at the moment, so everyone should get down and support us and grab some tickets,” Mr Buchanan said.

Applications for Off-farm Efficiency Program funding are open Individuals and entities in the irrigation, urban and manufacturing sectors across the Murray Darling Basin can apply for funding under the Off-farm Efficiency Program.

The program is a $1.54 billion Australian Government to upgrade water infrastructure to reduce water losses and increase water available for the environment. Water users and the community will also benefit from increased water reliability and the creation of job opportunities.

Three funding streams are available to potential applicants: · · ·

state-led streams: for eligible medium to large scale off-farm initiatives for delivery in partnership with NSW Government grants hub: for eligible small off-farm projects up to the value of $5 million feasibility stream: for eligible proposed projects to conduct preliminary investigations to inform a full-project proposal.

Applications for state-led, grants hub and feasibility streams are open, with all projects to be delivered by June 2024.

What is three-day sickness?

Three-day sickness, or bovine ephemeral fever

(BEF), is a viral disease of cattle that is spread by mosquitos and biting midges.

When and where does it occur?

T h ree day sick ness i s k now n t o o c c u r i n northern Australia and along the eastern seaboard south to the NSW-VIC border.

Three day sickness is more likely to occur in: • young stock; • wett er nor ther n reg ions (as it is more sp or ad ic i n s out her n cooler regions); • fol low i ng big wet seasons, especially if this follows several dry years.

What are the symptoms?

Diagnosis of threeday sick ness w i l l require assistance from a veterinarian. Clinical signs that would lead you t o suspe ct th ree day sick ness i n you r l ivest o ck i nclude the following: • depression • lameness, muscle s t i f f ne s s , s h iver i n g, twitching, droopy ears • d r o ol i n g s a l iv a , watery eyes, runny nose • recumbency (lying down/sprawling) • reduced water and food intake How do I treat it?

A lways contact your veterinarian for assist a nce i f you suspect there is a case of three-day sickness on your property. Bulls, he av i ly pr e g n a nt o r h igh pr oduc i ng c ows a nd wel l- c ond itioned stock should especially require treatment.

You r ve t e r i n a r i a n may recommend some of the following actions for the treatment of threeday sickness: 1. Ensure the affected

animal has adequate shelter, water and food to minimise the impacts of heat on the animal.

2. Roll over handled stock several times a day to help avoid loss of circulation. However, for unhandled stock, keep in mind that constant handling such as rolling may adversely stress the animal.

3. Anti-inflammatory d r ugs and calcium i nje c tions t o assist recumbent a n ima ls (animals lying down) to regain mobility.

How can I prevent it?

Prevention of threed ay sick ne s s r el ie s largely on vaccination of your herd.

Funding boon for Dunedoo The Three Rivers Retirement Village debacle has left Dunedoo with nothing but shells of buildings, as legal proceedings continue between Warrumbungle Shire Council and the project developers.

However, i n s ome good news for the small community, both the State and Federal governments h ave c om m it t e d $ 5 . 6 million towards further projects.

Warrumbungle Shire C ou nc i l mayor, C r Ambrose Doolan said it was a big win for Dunedoo moving forward.

With the development of the Three Rivers faltering, Cr Doolan said around $3.7 million had remained in the project’s budget.

“That money was still there for the project and Council’s general manager, R oger B a i ley, worked really hard to be able retain that left-over grant money,” Cr Doolan said.

“Not only did Mr Bailey manage to keep that $3.7 million, but he managed to secure even more funds.”

Those funds will now go toward other community projects.

Cr Doolan said there would be some community consultation into how the money should be spent, with a number of options already on the table.

“We’re not sure exactly

what the money will be used for,” Cr Doolan said.

“There’s the option to put it towards a smaller, scaled-down version of the Three Rivers project, or it could go to fixing existing infrastructure like sporting fields and footpaths.

“We are certainly very appreciative of the State and Federal governments for working with us for a good outcome for the Dunedoo community.”

T o ole s a id t he g r a nt funding will help shape plans for infrastructure upgrades that will support the local economy and improve the liveability of the town.

“We recognise the issues surrounding the Three Rivers Retirement Village project have been difficult for the community, and we’ll continue working closely with Warrumbungle Shire Council and local stakeholders to ensure we fund projects that the

community supports,” Mr Toole said. “ T h i s r e pr i o r it i s e d funding is about finding a good outcome from an un for tunate situation, and we’ll take the time to listen to those who know this area best to ensure the town gets the infrastructure it deserves.

“This may be in the form of a new retirement facility closer to the centre of town, sporting oval upgrades, footpaths or other potential projects.”

Chamber battles to attract members The Coonabarabran Chamber of Commerce is teetering on a knife’s edge.

E stabl ished ma ny ye a r s ago t o pr omot e the interests of the local business community, the organisation will next meet sometime in May where, if no interest is shown by members - new and old - the group will fold.

C h a mber president , Donna Burton said it was important business owners from every level should get involved. “ More ha nds mea ns less work for everyone involved,” Ms Burton said.

“The town needs it, it’s a voice in the community we need.

“It’s about supporting each other, listening to each other and the more people involved the better for everyone.”

Ms Burton said there were big plans for the future of the Chamber, but said she just needed numbers to get behind the ideas. “ We have just come off the back of a really successful Bunny Bazaar,” she said.

“Everyone involved said they were really happy with how it went and we have plans on making that bigger and better next year.

“We’re looking at holding the markets four times a year, but making them bigger a nd getti ng as

many existing businesses involved as possible.

“We’re also looking at starting up a Business Awards.

“These are just a couple of things we are looking at. “ But we ne ed mor e people with ideas to come in. Being a part of the Chamber of Commerce is a good way to see your ideas turn into reality.”

At the upcoming meeting, date yet to be confirmed, Ms Burton said there would be an election

of officers and, if successful, a brainstorming session would follow about moving forward. “ We rea l ly do wa nt everyone to be involved; it’s not just for main street businesses - it’s for every business in town to benefit from, even micro home busi nesses. It ’s about stepping up to help out.”

Watch this space for the confirmed date and venue for the meeting that will decide the organisation’s fate.

What is the ANZAC spirit?

“What is the ANZAC spirit?” asked Vietnam veteran, Don Harrod, during his ANZAC Day address in Coonabarabran on Monday, 25 April. a beer and a gamble, but, more than anything else - they were together. Nobody was ever left on their own.

“One Digger would clean the rifles whilst his mate opened the cans of rations and attempted to make a meal. They took turns in keeping watch at night and if one was finding things difficult, others would share the load.

“We often ask, ‘Where did these Diggers come from?’ They came from all over our country. Our neighbours in Gilgandra formed the ‘Cooee’ March, in which they walked from Gilgandra to Sydney to enlist, and coerced others along the way to join in.

“Many put their ages up in order to enlist. This meant that many young ser vicemen were not much over 15 years.

“Womenfolk stayed at home, making clothing and other defence items for those overseas; and many, of course, took over running the family farm.

“That is the ANZAC tradition,” Mr Harrod said.

“There is so much of character that can be learnt from the ANZAC legend that will help you in your journey of life.

“Be it school or work, always plan ahead. The ANZACs did.

“If the task seems too hard, think of another way.

The ANZACs did.

“If nothing goes right, keep smiling. The ANZACs did. “ N eve r s c o r n fa i t h o r h o p e. T h e A N Z AC s respected such values.

“If friends are down in the dumps, cheer them up. The ANZACs did.

“Remember, be ever so proud of your nation and its history.

Coonabarabran’s last World War II veteran, Bill Wilkin, joined the march along John Street.

Mr Wilkin, chauffered by Steve Moody. Mr Wilkin later delievered a prayer for Ukraine during the ANZAC Day service.

“ANZAC is not one person or deed,” Mr Harrod said.

‘It is love and pride for Australia. It is about mateship. It is about working together no matter how difficult the task. It is about suffering personal sacrifices. It is about suffering hardships to achieve the goal. ANZAC is a living legend, forged by our ancestors to ensure we have a safe life in our country.”

Mr Harrod, who served in Vietnam from 19691970 with the Fifth Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, was guest speaker at Coonabarabran’s 11am service, where a large crowd gathered to pay their respects to all those service men and women who have served Australia in the armed forces.

Mr Harrod outlined the many hardships endured

by Australian Defence Force personnel.

“Our seamen were virtually unprotected whilst defending our shores,” he said.

“Our soldiers suffered extreme conditions deserts, jungles, snow, heat, cold, malaria, hard rations and poor equipment.

“Our airmen were exposed to extreme danger in the skies.

“Unti l the Vietnam Wa r ended, our ser vice pe r son nel had ve r y few com m un ications. I n many areas there were no telephones, electricity, running water; mail from home was scarce. ‘Home’ was a leak y, four-man tent left over from the Second World War. Most of the time, however, was in jungle situations, lying on a wet groundsheet and sharing the area with leeches, scorpions, snakes and monkeys.

“How did the Australian Digger handle these hardships?

“Quite simply - they worked together.

‘In many cases they were larrikins... they loved

Lawries scoop the pool You can’t pull the wool over the eyes of St Lawrence’s Primary School agriculture students when it comes to sheep.

Representing the school at the Royal Easter Show, a group of Year 5 and 6 students returned home baa- athed in ribbons from their woolly competitor entries.

Each student presented their own entry at the Royal, but it was Fletcher Young’s exhibit that stole the show. His entry took out the Supreme Schools’ Poll Dorset Ram exhibition.

In this category, judges take into account the amount of meat, fat coverage, depth in the body, how the animal stands and how they present on the day.

Fletcher backed that up with a sixth place in the parading competition, in which Georgia Heaney finished third.

Amanda Young, w ho as si sted the schoo l’s agriculture teacher, Sue McGoldrick, in caring for both students and livestock at the show, said it was a great achievement from everyone involved.

A number of major awards were won, but Mrs Young said a lot of ribbons also came home to Coonabarabran.

“Our students went up against a whole lot of other schools first up and won a lot of awards, but after that they went up against other individuals and people from sheep studs.

“They did amazing there as well,” Mrs Young said.

“They really scooped the pool,” Mrs Young said.

Mrs Young said the results were a credit to the 14 students who regularly give up their lunch breaks to participate in agriculture.

St Lawrence's Catholic School agriculture team returned with ribbons galore from the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Rental shortage continues Like much of the state, rentals continue to be in high demand in Coonabarabran.

W h e n t h e C oon abarabran T imes contacted Dav idson Cameron and Co in early April, the local real estate agency had no available rentals.

P roperty manager Leonie Turner said the t ow n wa s i nu nd at ed by p e ople lo ok i n g for housing.

“It’s a bit of a mixture of people,” Ms T u r ner said.

“There’s a lot of locals

looking for rentals for whatever reasons, but t he r e ’s s ome out o f towners in the mix as well. “ T he problem is, we don’t have any properties available.

“What the town really needs is another big sub division.”

Despite the increase in demand for rentals, Ms Turner said prices were still very affordable. “ City a reas might

increase the rent because of demand - but we go off the market value,” she said.

“Coonabarabran is still pretty affordable.”

Ms Turner said Davidson Cameron and Co currently had more th a n 1 2 pe ople on it s books looking for homes and takes care of around 23 0 rentals, including teacher and police accommodation.

WEATHER WATCH The synoptic surface charts still show strong, high-pressure systems moving slowly eastwards across Tasmania or just south of Tasma n ia. It has been l i ke th is for most of this year. As a consequence, Tasmania itself has had dry c ond it ion s wh i l s t t he eastern states have had well-above rainfalls in many districts.

The persistence of these str ong, h ighpr e s su r e syst ems h a s c au s e d a n a b s enc e of strong south-southwesterly wind changes, particularly in Victoria and the Riverina.

Barometric pressures across Victor ia and Tasmania were unusually h igh last weekend. I n Melbourne the barometer reached a value of 1034.4mbs last Sunday, 24 April.

T here were a dozen other times when readings were that high in late April going back to 1861. Most of these set up a wet winter and s pr i n g s e a s o n i n ou r regions. One of these, in late April 1955, set up notably above-average rainfalls for the rest of that year.

T here was a lso a n inland low pressure over most of Qld late in April 1955, very similar to the current synoptic chart.

Cairns has had over 200mms the last few days and this month in Cairns is the first month with above-average rainfall

since April last year.

Heavy rain is currently occurring in the far west of Qld. Boulia had 45mms last Sunday, its heaviest fall for April since 1968.

It was late April 1968 when most of Victoria and part of NSW, up to near Cowra, received heavy rain and thunderstorms and then more heavy rain arrived during the second week of May 1968.

Cocos Island is having its warmest April since 1998.

Darwin has just had successive days of over 3 5 d e g r e e s . T he l a s t time this happened in late April was in 1978 and before that in 1942.

B oth tho se yea r s saw heavy rain in our regions during the second and third weeks of May after a warmer-than-average first week. More heavy rain fell during the third week of Ju ne a nd the second week of July.

Macquarie Island has, to date, had its wettest April with 150mms since t he 174 m m s i n 2 0 0 5 , which is not surprising because the sea-surface temperatures have been more than two degrees above the April normal.

T he ye a r 2 0 0 5 wa s noteworthy for flood rains which hit coastal regions of south- east Qld a nd around Lismore at the end of June.

Old Jerry There was an extraordinary character working as a stockman on Belar (Tannabah Road at Wa rk t on). He wa s referred to as ”Old Jerry” or “The Green man of the Mountains”. There were many Aborigines living along Belar Creek at the time. King Dickey was their leader. If they ventured onto the cattle run, Old Jerry would “round them up”. There are a couple of references to this man in newspaper articles. One recalls when he was killed on the road to Tannabar.

These small snippets only serve to whet the appetite to know more of “ The Green Man of the Mountains”. Unfortunately, no one has given enough clues to find out exactly what happened. Perhaps his real name was Jerry de Anne. This Jerry had made the mistake of stealing horses from the Rouses.

T hey would have been branded with the famous crooked “R”, known far and wide throughout the colony.

There are those today who can show you the steep track up which Jerry drove the horses into a hidden valley beyond.

George Rouse put a price on his head, dead or alive.

He was given refuge by one of the squatters in the mountains. Seven years later, George Rouse died.

The reward ceased to be.

Jerry was free from the fear of being shot dead at any instant. Jubilantly, he rode into Coonabarabran to enjoy himself at one of the hotels. It was something he had been afraid to do for seven years, so his high state of intoxication at the end of his visit can be imagined. He headed for home, as blind as a badger.

His horse galloped under the low-hanging branch of a tree. lt caught Jerry under the jaw. He fell to the ground, dead, his neck broken. Until well into the 1900’s, travellers on that lonely track were likely to see the spectre of a ghostly rider on a big white horse.

He would cross their path, galloping at tremendous speed, only to ride beneath a lea n i ng tree. A s he collided with the branch and fell to the ground, both horse and rider faded into nothingness. (Pickette and Campbell pp 35-36) Togee “Old Togee” was King of the Butheroe tribe (near Neilrex) when Mr Vincent took up that country. He lived there with the tribe until he was a very old man.

One day he was talking to Mr Joseph Nevell and told him he was afraid of Cutterbush. When Togee was returning to his camp

Cutterbush speared him and my father and uncle carried him into a nearby shed where he died.

They buried him next day and my father showed us the spot, close to a place then called “ Pickett ‘s Garden”. My brother, the late Clarence Nevell, paid a boundary rider, George Weatherley to ride out and erect that headstone some 50 years ago, but Togee had been dead a number of years.

My brother used to say that, strangers will never know that “a King’ ever lived in ‘Butheroe”.

Togee learnt English very quickly. He used to say the first white man he saw was smoking at Nullen Ridge (now Denison Town) “mine thinkit - mine thinkit - him real debbildebbil - and me run away like emu”.

Togee was a big powerful man over six feet tall and a great shot with a spear or stone. He and his tribe lived for many years at “ Butheroe ”, wh ich my father and his brother, Joseph owned then. They used to send Togee and some of his followers in with a few head of fat cattle to the old home of Carwell (near Rylstone) to show how they trusted them.

The Nevell family had a brass plate made for Togee, inscribed “King of the Butheroe tribe”. This, Togee used to wear around his neck, probably it was buried with him.

Follow ing in my grandfather’s footsteps, both my father and his brothers were always kind and understanding with the di fferent tr ibes of Aborigines, of which there were many in those early days.

Mr James Vincent passed away sudden ly on the Turon Ranges returning to his home, “Carwell”, from a business visit to Bathurst.

When the news of his death reached “Butheroe”, there were great lamentations by the Aborigines who we nt i nt o m o u r n i n g , plastering their faces and bodies with pipe clay. Next morning the whole tribe had disappeared and they did not return to the station for three years - they were

still in mourning.

King Togee’s death was probably in the 1850’s. The original tombstone was erected some distance in from the present CoolahNeilrex road. When the l at e C e c i l E . W i nt e r acquired the area in 1916, he found the headstone had collapsed, most of the stone being covered with earth.

He was responsible for it being removed and restored in its present position.

The Coolah Shire Council then constructed railing a round the tombstone and Mr Winter cared for it until 1964 when he sold his property. (Cameron p.352-353) Cutterbush Little information has been recorded regarding K ing Cutterbush, who fatally speared King Togee.

The following article by A. Ryder was published in the Coonabarabran Times in 1962. I have made minor changes to this article.

Born in the vicinity of the Nandi Mountain in 1825 at the river flats, this old warrior king, up to early middle age, led and governed his famous fighting tribe, which for centuries had dominated the wide flung territory of the C oonaba rabra n district. But let us go back in tribal history: Cutterbush told the people of his tribe, “I have told you all that this must come and now we must be prepared, for it marks the end of our separate tribes.

We have returned from Binnaway, and a council of chiefs from many distant tribes have agreed that our tribal boundaries are now ended. Many parties from different tribes will now cross our lands as they travel away from the oncoming strangers, these white men who travel on the backs of large animals, and who kill with loud banging sticks that send out smoke and a loud, humming noise, like an angry hornet”.T That day marked the time when irate Aborigines ended their futile effort t o stem the oncomi ng pioneers. Their ambushes and spears brought swift retaliation from the white settlers, whose cattle and stock were now sweeping

deeper through the Liverpool Plains and who unwittingly picked out the choice localities regardless of age-old and well-defined Aboriginal laws.

“We are quite safe here on the riverside flats for we have the mountain tracks behind us, and now we must make peace with the white strangers. No member of my tribe shall try to spear them,” said King Cutterbush sternly.

As the weeks passed by, party after party of Aboriginals passed through the Kamileroi territory, making their way through the track, over the gap through the Warrumbungle Mountains near Yearinan, to the plains that stretched into the distance beyond Coonamble to Walgett.

T hus, there was the mingling of tribes and tribal dialects, of customs peculiar to ind iv idual tr ibes, and slowly but surely the ancient history and legends became mixed and lesser known as they split into small, family groups and went walkabout in search of game.

King Cutterbush and a small group remained at the riverside camp at C o on aba rabra n . T hey became friendly with the pioneers and in return for help were given extra meat and food. The pure bloods slowly died out and “Cutterbush”, as he was known to the settlers, made several camps. He was known to stay awhile in each and wander away to another camp. He told a very old resident that spirits walked around if he stopped too long in one camp, so he moved on.

It was at his lonely camp on Belar Creek where he died, close to the then Warkton mail coaching stop and post office, named after the pioneer Wark family.

And now, in 1962, old Tom Wark, a son of the veteran pioneer who settled there, tells many a story of old King Cutterbush, whose grass covered grave is unmarked by any sign, and the spot known but to one or two old pioneers.

Certainly the Jets, while pleased with their opening win over Trangie, will need to be on their guard against what should be an enthusiastic Gulgong outfit.

Similarly, the Dunedoo Swans will be on the road for their first game of the season when they attempt the very often extremely difficult task of upsetting the Coonamble Bears on the Bear’s home patch.

Unicorns bow out for 2022 The Coonabarabran Unicorns have pulled out of the 2022 Castlereagh League competition entirely.

It was announced earlier in the year that the Unicorns would proceed without a first-grade rugby league side.

Now, the women’s league tag team has also withdrawn from the competition, claiming a shortfall of players.

Newly-elected president of the Coonabarabran Rugby League Football Club, Madel i ne W i l son sa id she was l ef t feel i ng personally devastated by the decision.

“It’s been difficult stepping into this role we’ve tried really hard to get it all up and going,” she said.

“We lost a lot of players at the start of the year for valid reasons - people moving away or leaving for university, but we will stick at it and try and get it running again next year.”

Throughout the competition’s pre-season, Wilson said only a handful of league-tag players

had regularly turned up to training and it had come time to bite the bullet when only 11 players were available on game day.

She said it was impossible to kick star t a competition that way, let alone be successful.

“Winning the competition for your local town should be enough motivation for players.

“There’s so much more to footy - there’s the fitness aspect and the camaraderie of playing with your team mates.”

Wilson said she would now assist the Coonabarabran Kookas rugby union side. Her husband, Sam, will run on for the Kookas this year.

“I will help out strapping and running water for the Kookas, but we will definitely be looking at strengthening the Unicorns for next year.”

Kookas ready to swoop Canowindra Pythons The Coonabarabran Rugby Club has high expectations as it prepares for its first home game of the season this Saturday, 30 April, against Canowindra.

RUGBY UNION The Kookas have been training strongly with coaches Stu and Pete for many weeks, however, w it h m a ny new f ac e s in the team it is sure t o be a n ent er ta i n i ng d ay, a s s ome of t hem h av e l it t l e g a m e - d ay experience, performing under pressure and remembering the of rules of rugby.

One rule that is sure to be str ictly refereed is the ‘contact with the head law’, which has been implemented by World Rugby. The rule is now, whether it be intentional or accidental, the result w i l l be the same - a n automatic red card and send off. Their will be no Gus G ould excuses “That’s okay, he hit him around the shoulder and it slid up, just bad luck that’s all, I don’t know why referees just can’t get on with the game”. Sorry guys, so be careful or you will be watching from the

sideline.

T he r e h a s b e e n a n alteration to the draw, as Coolah has been unable to form a team this yea, so unfortunately the two games the Kookaburras had against Coolah, are now byes.

This is the first time Coolah has not put a team on the paddock since the Roos formed in 1984 and with no league in town for many years, it’s hard to believe they could not find 15 players; although no doubt they did all they could.

Mind you, the Kookaburras have battled on w it h le s s over t he years and famously went to Coolah in 2018 with 13, and asked to borrow some players off their bench - w ithout luck, so ran short. Then, when Spud Davies was sent off for a dangerous tackle within the first five minutes it made it a tough night, but we were only beaten 23-15

with 13 players.

H o w e v e r, t h e m o s t famous occasion was whe n C o o n a b a r a br a n went to Trangie in 2017 w it h t he now f a mou s ‘dirty dozen’.

Dirty dozen T he T igers had a s q u ad of 2 5 wa r m i n g up as Coonabarabran’s Lonnie Stone approached Trangie, explaining we only had 12 players and requested to bor row some players t o ma ke it somewhat fa i r.

Amazingly, they said no way, we will need them all.

So, the 12 Kookaburras ra n on a nd put i n a n h ist or ic ef for t a nd as C o onaba rabra n went ahead on the scoreboard, the Trangie crowd looked on in disbelief that were about t o be beaten by 1 2 pl ayer s f r om t he Wa r r u mbu ngles when they had 10 players being interchanged off their bench!

History records that Trangie did score a try in the last play of the game

to win 13-11 and went on to win the premiership that year. However, this game is certainly one our most memorable losses and is still spoken about today in hushed voices a round ba rbecues and late at night in the pub.

I nt e r e s t i n g l y, b o t h these clubs a re not fielding teams this year, not that Coonabarabran can be lecturing other clubs as we have had our troubles in forming over the years. Four times we have been forced sit out a season because of not enough players and then returned the following year.

But we a lso have always done our best to make sure others clubs get a home game, as we know it is important that you have to look after each other or you’ll just end up with less and less clubs in the competition.

Keeping these small bush clubs alive has to be a passion and commitment from many players and the committees. S o,

Spook wins stableford WEEKEND GOLF Last Saturday, 23 April, a good field of 20 golfers contested a stableford event at the Coonabarabran Golf Club.

The winner on the day was John “Spook” Davis with a good score of 39 points.

Balls went to Jeff Abbott with 36 points - nice to see you back on the course, Jeff, C Bennell, A Jones and D Stevenson.

From what I could see, there was no competition on Sunday.

Monday also appeared to be a no competition day - maybe the golfers were offering their respects on ANZAC Day. Next weekend will be a stableford event on both days.

Please note that the first round of the Liberty Cup will now be played in conjunction with the monthly medal the following weekend.

That will be the Forsyths Monthly Medal and it would be great to see a good roll up as Forsyths have been a long-term sponsor of the event.

League season kicks off The 2022 Castlereagh League kicked off last weekend, but not before a tumultuous start to the competition, highlighted by the total withdrawal of the Coonabarabran Unicorns from the current season earlier in the week.

CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE T he Unicorns, along w ith the Bi n naway Bombshells, had previously indicated that they would not be fielding a f i r s t - g r ad e s id e i n 2022, but would continue with a league-tag side throughout the year in the hope that the club could regroup and rebuild a first-grade team next year.

This meant that a total re-jig of the previously adopted draw had to be done and this was finally settled upon just a few weeks ago.

U n f o r t u n a t e l y, t h e problems that beset the Unicorns’ first-grade side have now also affected thei r leag ue -tag t eam and the club has sadly made the move to totally withdraw for the season, leaving the Castlereagh League competition with nine clubs.

T he leag ue will run with the draw that was arrived at a few weeks ago, with clubs drawn to play Coonabarabran now having a bye.

Not an ideal start to the year, but nonetheless the competition did get underway last Saturday w ith f i r st -g rade w i n s goi ng t o Na r romi ne, Cobar and Coonamble.

Playing in their first Castlereagh L eag ue competition game, the Narromine Jets got their c a mpa ig n u nder way with a solid 38 to 14 win over lo c a l r iva l s , t he Trangie Magpies. Played at Trangie, Narromine s c o r e d e i g ht t r i e s t o three to continue their good form after winning the Castlereagh League K nockout at Gilgandra just a few weeks earlier.

Further west, a mistake-riddled Gilgandra Panther outfit paid the price against the Cobar Roosters at Cobar’s Tom K night Memor ial Oval, going down 34 to 14 a f ter being well in the match at half time, with the scoreboard then reading 18 -10. But the home side’s power, aided

by Gilgand ra’s lack of ball security, saw the red, white and blues secure a f ly ing start to their season.

In the remaining game, played at Baradine, it was a close affair between the Magpies and their arch r iva ls, the Coonamble Bears, but in the final wa s h up t he v i s it o r s claimed the important competition points with a tight 26 to 22 victory.
