Winter warning as fire destroys house
NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers have been applauded for their speedy action in preventing the spread of a house fire in Baradine. by LIZ CUTTS In the early hours of Tuesday, 17 May, Baradine RFS brigade responded to a triple zero call to a house fire in Castlereagh Street. Phil Hensby, captain of the Baradine RFS, said luckily the house was unoccupied and everyone was accounted for. “On ar rival it was obser ved that the house was fully engulfed
and property protection for the neighbouring houses became a priority,” Mr Hensby said. “The Baradine unit became fully involved in fighting the blaze, supported by Coonabarabran Fire and Rescue and RFS brigades from Bugaldie and Goorianawa. All agencies worked well together; it was a team effort. Two caravans were saved and the spread of the fire to houses close-by was
prevented. “We remained at the scene all morning to ensure site safety.” The RFS advised that a police investigation will be conducted as to the cause of the fire. RFS acting district manager of the Castlereagh zone, Aaron Powell said that this incident was a timely reminder to residents to complete a winter safety check of all electrical appliances.
“There are some simple steps you can follow to reduce your risk of a fire in your home,” Mr Powell said. “Most impor tantly, have an adequate number of suitable smoke alarms installed throughout your home and make sure that you test them regularly. “If you have a fireplace in your home, make sure the chimney is clean and always place a screen in front of it when in use.
“Check electric blankets for damage or frayed cords before placing on the bed and take care to keep curtains, tablecloths and bedding away from por table heaters. Keep wet clothing at least one metre from heaters or fireplaces and never leave unattended. “A house fire can happen at any time of year. A good guide to home fire safety can be found on the NSW Rural Fire Service website.”
