Living costs climb More Warrumbungle Shire residents are accessing welfare services as the cost of living continues to spiral out of control for Australians.

From fuel to bread, milk and even council rates, daily living expenses are on the rise are reaching unprecedented levels.

President of Gilgandra St Vincent de Paul’s, Paul Dolan said he expects the nu mber of pe ople seeking assistance to rise significantly in the coming months.

“We have definitely seen an increase in demand for our services,” Mr Dolan said.

“And the way things are going that’s just going to increase even more.

“In Coonabarabran, in particular, there’s been a ne e d for mor e fo o d vouchers.

“There are different ways we can help out, depending on the circumstances, but there’s been an increase in demand for food vouchers.”

Mr Dolan said assisting residents w ith food expenses enabled clients to direct some of their finances elsewhere.

To ask for help or enquire about food vouchers from St Vincent de Paul, residents are urged to call 0490 668 397.

Pa s t or C h r i s t opher Petersen, from the Seventh Day Adventist Chu rch’s Food Pa ntr y in Coonabarabran, said they have a steady flow of residents accessing the service each week and there was scope for more to benefit.

“We get between 50 and 60 people coming through each week to get their food and fresh produce,” Mr Petersen said.

“There’s no doubt there’s people out there who are being impacted by the cost

of living expenses going up and we’d love to be able to help them.”

Hamish Lees, coordinator of the Food Pantry, said there was a wide range of essential items available at heavily discounted prices.

T he S eventh Day Adventist Church’s Food Pa ntr y is open each Thursday, between 9am and 12 noon.

“Everything we have here is between 50 cents and $3,” Mr Lees said. “ There is also a good selection of fresh fruit and produce.”

M i s sion Au st r a l i a’s program manager, Dylan Crawley said staff had noticed an increase in the request for food hampers amongst their clients in recent months.

He said assistance can

be offered to residents struggling, but said they must be signed up to one of their welfare programs.

“We take the approach that if someone comes in asking for help and they don’t fall under one of our programs, we will still do what we can for them and refer them to other suitable services,” Mr Crawley said.

“But we have certainly noticed an increase in our existing clients asking for support in the way of groceries.

“The rental situation at the moment is also a major concern. As food and fuel goes up, more people are unable to afford to pay their rent. Not to mention new rentals are hard to come by. “ We ’r e e x p e c t i n g a dramatic increase in people seeking assistance over the coming months.”

Tragic accident rocks community Tributes have poured in from across the state for Coonabarabran resident and VRA Rescue NSW acting deputy commissioner, Stuart Green, who died following a light plane crash on Easter Monday.

A member of the public went to the aid of the pilot and sole occupant, removing Green from the pla ne a nd per form i ng CPR until the arrival of police and paramedics,

however, the 57-year-old died at the scene.

Warrumbungle Wings N Things cancelled Due to the ongoing investigation into this plane crash, the Warrumbungle Wings N Things event scheduled to be held this Friday and Saturday, 22-23 April, has been cancelled for 2022.

Water rat sighting signifies healthy river system Environmental experts working on the rehabilitation of the Castlereagh River near Coonabarabran have come across an interesting find.

by CHRIS WARD During an inspection of an area where exotic trees had been rem oved a s pa r t of the clean up project, a water rat (Hydromys chr ysogaster) was sighted.

Ecologist David Paull, who captured a photo of the protected species, said it was a positive sign for the river.

“Water rats a re ra rel y noticed native m a m m a l s t h a t h a ve evolved to behave like otters do in other parts of the wor ld, where they hunt for food like mussels and yabbies, taking them to the bank where they eat them at tables,” he explained.

“It is a good sign, it shows the health of the river is good. Supporting a p redato r l i ke th i s shows that the river is supporting a range or organisms constituting a ‘food-web’.”

Monitoring In more good news for the water rat and t h e r i ve r s y s t e m , M r Paull said since his initial sighting more people had witnessed the creature in other areas of the Castlereagh River.

A s the Castlereagh Rive r rehabi l itation continues, Mr Paull said he would like to see the changes monitored.

“The Castlereagh Ri ve r p ro j ect a i m s to improve the health and ecology of the riparian environment of the river t h ro u g h tow n, w h i ch will include controlling waste and erosion, improving fish habitat and replaci ng exotic trees and plants w ith natives on the banks,” Mr Paull said.

“What is needed i s m o n i to r i n g to s e e the i m pact s of these changes on the r ive r ecos ystem, i ncl ud i ng how it affects use of the river by native animals and fish and the water quality of the river.

“It is hoped that these changes w i l l improve the health of the river and p rovide bet te r access for the people of Coonabarabran.”

In the past the water rat was trapped for its fur, but is now a protected animal in Australia and the species population appears to have recove red f rom the effects of hunting.

Help Vinnies help others volunteers needed Now, more than ever, organisations such as St Vincent de Paul are needed within local communities.

With the cost of living currently spiking, residents tr y ing to recover from the C O V I D -1 9 o u t b r e a k , and the drought still in the back of ever yone’s minds, services offered by orga n isations such as Vinnies a re v itally important to the community.

However, as with many

cha r ity organ isations, Vinnies survives on ly by it s de d ic at e d volu nteers. A nd those volu nt eers , espe cia l ly in Coonabarabran, are dwindling.

Volu nt e er s for b ot h sections - care and support and retail - are drastically needed.

the overseeing of the local Vinnies care and support has fallen on Gilgandra S t V i n c e nt d e P au l ’s president, Paul Dolan.

Mr Dolan said, pa r ticu la rly i n th is cl imat e of f i na ncia l uncertainty and living costs constantly increasing, it was impor ta nt the lo ca l residents were able

t o access suppor t a nd services offered by the organisation.

“We really need people in Coonabarabran to take on these support roles th r ough V i n n ies ,” M r Dolan said. “ We ne e d p e ople there to run it - we’re after volunteers to help facilitate and deliver the services.

“Without the volunteers we will struggle to do that and that’s unfortunate, because the way things

are going we are expecting even more people trying to access our services in the very near future.”

Area manager Karen Heidke said St Vincent de Pau l wa s a lways seeking more volunteers a nd whet her t he r ole was in care and support or i n r et a i l , she s a id it’s an overall positive experience. “ I ’d love t o b e able to open the shop in C o onaba rabra n for a few hours of a Saturday

mor n ing, but we can’t do that at the moment with staffing levels,” Ms Heidke said. “ T here a re so ma ny benefits to volunteering.

“You get to meet new p e ople , s o c i a l i s e a nd make friends - and that helps improve people’s overall health.

“Especially coming out of COVID where people we r e r e a l ly i s o l at e d , volunteering gives people a chance to get out and be social again. Plus you can

learn new skills. “ C u r r e n t l y, m o r e people, all the time, are needing a helping hand.”

Ms Heidke said potential volunteers can assist as much or as little as they like. “ W het her it ’s t h r e e hours a month or 30 hours a week - ever y th i ng is appreciated,” she said.

Anyone interested in volunteering is urged to call into the St Vincent de Paul’s store in Dalgarno Street, Coonabarabran.

Purlewaugh CWA’s 90th anniversary Last year, the Purlewaugh branch of the CWA was to celebrate 90 years since its beginning in 1931. Unfortunately, COVID interrupted plans to hold a major function, and so it was postponed until this year.

A most enjoyable luncheon was held at the Purlewaugh hall to acknowledge the milestone on 26 March. Members and friends from nearby branches - Tambar Springs, Rocky Glen and Coonabarabran - were in attendance, with apologies because of the poor weather from Baradine branch.

The luncheon was a relaxed affair, with congratulations offered from various people, and nostalgic memories shared about functions and projects over the years.

It also attracted various past members of the branch who added to the significance of the event considerably.

There was a display of memorabilia including some very significant photos from the past and the minute books from across the life of the branch. A booklet encompassing notes from the minute books from every year had been put together by Jo Wilkin, and copies were made available on the day.

A splendid cake, made and decorated by Coonabarabran Bakery, was cut by branch and group patron Irene Bassett, who spoke about the way CWA had brought her into the community when she first arrived here, and how it had continued to provide a focus for her over the years.

Looking back, it is very clear how valuable the work of the Purlewaugh branch has been, providing fund-raising opportunities, as well as many chances for members to develop their skills and enjoy each other’s company.

CWA has proved to be the way that so many women in the country have found friendship and support from each other in good times and bad.

Congratulations, Purlewaugh CWA. May you continue to serve the community and provide good times for its members for many years to come.

The Western Young Cattle Indicator (WYCI) reached a record high of 1,102.34c/kg cwt this week.

Medium steer prices have softened 58c/kg lwt week-on-week.

Lamb slaughter is seasonally higher than previous years, with just under 5 million head slaughtered this year.

Some sales are not going ahead due to the public holidays.

Indicators T he West er n You ng Cattle Indicator (WYCI) has reached a record high this week at 1,202.34c/ kg cwt. This is up 227.56c year-on-year, with the surge being d r iven by restocker demand in the market. Restockers took out 56.57 per cent of sales followed by 43.28 per cent from feeder buyers.

Over in the east, the E ast er n You ng Cattle I nd ic at or ( E YC I ) h a s sof t ened 8 .74 c / kg cw t week-on-week at 1,086.81c/ kg cwt. The number of head sold to lot feeders has risen by 10 per cent weekon-week, taking out 52.38 per cent of the sales.

week-on-week to 536.71c/ kg lwt. A premium price on the national average was found in Forbes and Dubbo, at 46c/kg lwt and 32c/kg lwt respectively.

These saleyards contribute 12 per cent of the market, w ith Dubbo occupy ing 8 per cent as the third largest of all the saleyards nationally.

Medium steers Medium steer prices have softened 58c/kg lwt week-on-week due to the lower th roughput a nd softer yardings seen this week. A premium price of 132c/kg lwt on the national average was fou nd i n Mount Gambier with a 2 per cent contribution. At Tamworth, which provides a 10 per cent contribution, med ium steers were

trading at a 48c/kg lwt on the national average.

This was due to a strong demand from processors, who comprised 26 per cent of sales.

Online sales AuctionsPlus numbers for online sales were 7 per cent higher week-on-week, reaching 17,848 head. This ref lects the increase in restocker demand after some rain in northern NSW and southern QLD increasing the feed available.

Sheep Trade lambs have risen 12c/kg cwt week-on-week but there were nea rly 2,000 less head reporting due to the Easter holidays and sales not going ahead.

The rise in trade lamb price is due to a strong

demand from processors at 81 per cent of sales. This demand has strengthened 10 per cent week-on-week.

A premium pr ice on the national average for trade lambs can be found throughout NSW, with Wagga Wagga recording a premium of 17c over the national average and contributing the highest percentage at 23 per cent.

Heavy lamb prices have softened 4c/kg cwt weekon-we ek but prem iu m prices of 40c/kg cwt to 798c/kg cwt were found in Corowa with strong demand from processors.

T his was met with a strengthening of the yardings at Corowa by 2,275 head with mixed quality.

Slaughter

Cattle slaughter is up year-on-year, rising by 126 per cent on 2021 numbers to 95,935 head. This is due to the Easter holidays, with processors pushing for a greater throughput before the holidays and the start of three short weeks.

Lamb slaughter is seasona l ly h igher compared to the last two years. 394,712 head were slaughtered this week, up 90,419 head from last ye a r. T h i s put s l a mb slaughter at 4,861,0 0 0 head this year to date.

Tom Howlett - Aussie digger With ANZAC Day almost upon us, it’s interesting to note the connection Coonabarabran had with the Gallipoli campaign back in 1915.

Borneo, New Guinea, to England with Bomber Command flying over Germany, or on a ship in the D-Day landing, in Darwin when the bombs fell or Cowra during the J a pa n ese b rea k o ut, Korea, Vietnam.

One such stor y of a grave in Coona, among a handful of Gallipoli vete rans at the o l d cemeter y, is of D r iver Thomas Howlett, 1228 of th e 2 0 th Bat ta l i o n Australian Imperial Force, the uncle of Jack Howlett - the Baradine saddler.

To m wa s b o r n i n Brewar rina and his fam i ly t ravel led by horse and cart, contract fencing between there a n d Wa l g et t. W h i l e camping on the river at Walgett Tom was badly burnt as a boy in a tent fire and given a week to live. An old Aboriginal woman in town heard about his condition and went out to him, mixed up traditional bush m e d i c i n e a n d s a ve d his life.

Tom initially enlisted with the 9th Australian Light Horse and transfer red to the infantry on 1 March 1915 with the 13th Battalion a t L i ve r p o o l , b u t b y A p r i l h e w a s p o s te d to D Company 2 0 th Battalion 5th Brigade.

On his medical report he gave his age as 21, but at the time was 27.

The 20th Battalion was given the trenches at Russell’s Top to defend.

Bet ween the re and Baby 700 is where the Nek (narrow stretch of ridge on the Gallipoli Peninsula) was located and the scene of the devastating charge of the 8th and 10th Light Horse on foot.

Ru s s e l l’s To p wa s the highest place on Gallipoli and the infantr y had dragged a s e ct i o n of a r t i l l e r y g u n s to t h e p o s it i o n.

The trenches were eight-feet deep, with firing positions to shoot at a dva n ci n g Tu r k i s h soldiers.

In December 1915 the Australian troops left Gall ipol i in the cover of darkness. Each u n i t h a d to s u p p l y a handful of volunteers, the bravest of men, to cover the retreat so as to not let the Turks know they were withdrawing.

Tom Howlett was one of t h e vo l u nte e r s fo r his Battalion and if the Tu r k s h a d fo u n d o u t t h e Au s t ra l i a n s we re leaving, the men left to last would have been captured or killed.

Tom left ANZAC Cove that night and travelled to Alexandria, Egypt.

T h e 2 0 t h B a t ta l i o n fought throughout F ra n ce a n d B e l g i u m, with Tom becoming a ho r se -team t ranspo r t

driver in May 1916.

To m s u r v i ve d t h e wa r to s a i l fo r h o m e f ro m E n g l a n d o n th e s h i p ‘A r g y l l s h i r e’ i n December 1918. He was medically discharged f ro m t h e a r my o n 12 A p r i l 1919 f ro m 2 n d Military District, Sydney, with deficient eyesight.

After the war he went back to contract fencing around Dunedoo and

Mendooran and rabbit trapping at Coona.

barmaid, May Mathews.

Tom died in 1957 of hea r t fai l u re and old age, being bu r ied at t h e o l d ce m ete r y by B o b b l e H a r p e r. H i s niece, Daphne Howlett, lives in Coona today.

Thomas Howlett is a man who was par t of Co o n a b a ra b ra n a n d p a r t of t h e A N Z AC legend.

Time marches on, as next Monday, 25 April 2022, marks 107 years since the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. It is also 104 years since the end of World War One and the 77th year since World War Two. W hile we a re not quite free of the COVID concerns of 2020 and 2021, the Coonabarabran RSL Sub-Branch anticipates relative freedom for all to join in commemorating ANZAC Day, beginning with the dawn ser v ice at 6.00am and the main ser v ic e at 11.0 0 a m.

A ssembly time for the march is 10.30 am.

Fo r t h o s e c o n f i ne d at home or to a car, the service will be broadcast by our local station 2WCR FM in two ways: the first on 9 9.5 M Hz, and the second, live-streamed via the web-site accessible via your smart phone.

T here may be s ome special historical features as part of the commemorative service this year that offer a salute to our service on both land and in the air.

ANZAC Day is a day t o r emember a nd pay respect to the fallen on the battlefield, to honour those who gave service and for service members to share a time of reunion. Whether in victory or in defeat, we honour all involved in defending our continent, ma i nta i n i ng a stable, democratic government.

T he two world wa rs contribute to the bulk of statistics when we consider the more than 102,000 killed in the past 150 years or so. That is not to

diminish, in any way, the contribution and sacrifices made by men and women in lesser conflicts. No matter the political arguments, ex-service members and current serving members a l l joi ned the defence forces of our nation in full knowledge that they may be called upon to take their place in the history of this nation. In reality, all who joined have done just that.

For 102,000, their names are listed in memorials across the nation.

T he yea r 2 0 2 2 a ls o ma rks 8 0 yea rs si nce some significant events in the Pacific during WWII. After the surprise attack o n Pe a rl H a r b o u r i n December of 1941, followed by early successes down the Malaysian Peninsular, west to Burma, east to Rabaul, things started to turn a bit sour for Japan through 1942 in the battles of Coral Sea and Midway.

T he latter, in June of 1942, a devastating loss, followed by an outright defeat at Milne Bay in August 1942.

By the end of 1942 , t he Japa ne se , t hough well entrenched in China, south-east Asia, the Philippines and on islands across the Pacific, were being rounded up t o b e pu she d back t o Japan. Nearly one million Australians served in the war to cost 39,000 lives,

some 8 0 0 0 of them as prisoners of war held by the Japanese.

Ten yea rs lat er, t he K o r e a n Wa r wa s wel l u nder way w ith Seoul, after five battles, reasonably secured by the UN forces. This war would cost 339 lives of the 1500 casualties, 29 men were taken as prisoners of war.

E leven ye a r s l at er, following Korea, Australia would commit significant forces to Vietnam, where over 500 lives would be lost and 2400 wounded.

T he M a l aya n Emergency, the Indonesian Confrontation and Peacekeeping would add to the casualty list of the 20th century. East Timor and the recent wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria would continue to add to the honour roll of those killed in action.

T hrough the 2 0 th centu r y a nd i nt o th is one, Austra lians have been at war at various times. Australia has also fulfilled its responsibilities in Peacekeeping roles.

We honour over 102,000 killed, several hundred thousand wounded and well over a million who have served in war.

Weed workshops gather insight for heliotrope management Twenty-four farmers, agronomists, weed specialists and technical officers joined staff from Local Land Services (LLS) and the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in Coonabarabran for a workshop gathering local knowledge on Blue heliotrope on Thursday, 30 March.

Blue heliotrope i s a d r o u g h t - h a r d y, agricultural weed that is especially problematic in pastu res due to its toxicity to stock.

The workshops, organised by Wild M at t e r s , a r e p a r t o f a s e r ie s o f a c t i v it ie s i n d e v e l o pi n g a B lue heliotrope best practice management manual to assist land managers to tackle the problem weed.

Farmers furious as Government renews Santos gas licences Farmers are outraged after the NSW Perrottet Government quietly renewed massive coal seam gas exploration tenements owned by Santos in the world-renowned Liverpool Plains farming district last week.

A L ock the Gate A lliance spokesperson said the renewal of the th ree petroleum exploration l icences ( PE L s)* ( PE L 1, PE L 12 , and PEL 238) was quietly made on Tuesday, 1 2 A pr i l , a s G omer oi People were being taken

by Santos to the Native Title Tribunal over the Pilliga gasfield.

T he r enewa l o f one of the petroleum leases means Santos will now be able t o ex plore for gas over a much larger s wat he o f t he P i l l i g a than what is currently conf ined within its proposed project.

T he r e newa l o f t he three licences also means that about half of the 1.2 million hectares of the Liverpool Plains foodbowl is now covered in renewed gas exploration licences.

Mu l la ley fa rmer, Margaret Fleck said the renewal was a cruel blow to farmers on the plains, g iven they had on ly recently celebrated the demise of the Shenhua coal mine.

“People will be furious that they are now once again faced with a fight against an industry that threatens to drain the pr e c iou s g r ou ndwat er they rely on to produce food and fibre for Australians and export,” Ms Fleck said.

“Our concern has always been about the impact this industry will h ave on g r ou ndwat er.

Allowing Santos to expand over the L iver p o ol P l a i n s w i l l jeopardise the viability of farming businesses. “ We l ive i n a n env ironment where most forms of farming are dependent on g rou ndwat er. T he renewal by the Perrottet Government of Santos’ tenements puts all that at risk.”

According to L ock the Gate A lliance, the renewal of the tenements follows the release of a new groundwater impact repor t in Queensland, which reveals the devastating impacts the coal seam gas industry is having and is expected

to have on the Western Downs farming district.

They said it showed the industry: • Is taking about 54 bi l l ion l itres of wat er each year; • Is expected to drain mor e t h a n 7 0 0 wat e r bores relied on for farming. T wo hundred and thirty-three bores have already been impacted; • Is causing g r ou ndwat er levels t o drop by more than 400 metres in some areas; • Is expected to expand from 86 0 0 gas wells currently operating to about 22,000; • Is causing f a r m l a nd t o si n k due t o depressu r isation of coal seams beneath the surface.

Santos has previously stated publicly that it has no plans to drill for gas on the Liverpool Plains, sa id L ock the Gate A lliance spokesperson, Georgina Woods. “ Those comments now looked hollow in light of the company’s renewed licences,” Ms Woods said.

“Santos has proved it cannot be trusted and it clearly has coal seam

gas ex pa nsion pla ns for the farmland of the L ive r p o ol P l a i n s a nd

beyond.

“It was a fatal mistake for the NSW Government

t o g ive t h i s c omp a ny room t o expa nd coa l seam gas.”

CWA ‘disgusted’ at renewal of PELs The Country Women’s A s s o c i at ion (C WA ) of NSW has expressed its disgust at the NSW Government’s decision to quietly renew a number o f e x pi r e d Pe t r oleu m E x pl o r at i o n L i c e n c e s (PELs 1, 12 and 238) on the Liverpool Plains, in direct contradiction to the wishes of the entire community and without informing landholders.

T he decision follows yea rs of advocacy and lobbying by community g r o up s o n t h i s i s s u e who have been on tenterhooks awaiting an

announcement and who received no information from the State G overnment to in form them of this development.

“Ju st one d ay a f t er the Deputy Premier was visiting the Royal Easter Show for ‘Thank a Farmer’ day, these renewals were made. Please explain to me how exactly farmers are being ‘thanked’ by m a k i n g a de c i s ion t o concentrate future coal seam gas developments within some of the most productive farming areas of the state?” said CWA of NSW president,

Stephanie Stanhope.

“This renewal places ag r icu ltu ra l la nd a nd wat er at r i s k . It ’s a s simple as that, and that is why we are so strong in our advocacy on this matter. “ We were a ls o extremely disappointed in the underhanded way in which the information about the renewals came to light. The landholders, a n d t h i s c o m mu n i t y, deserve far better. They deserve to be treated with respect and courtesy. “ B y s ne a k i n g t h i s decision into the

government gazette, just before Easter, really is ver y upsetting for the community who, if they had doubts before, really have a clear idea now of where they stand in terms of government priorities. “ We will never rest in our lobbying on this issue. If anything, this d e v e l o pm e nt a n d t h e nature by which it has come to light reinforces even more why we must continue to fight for the f ut u r e of th i s spe c i a l area.”

Junior riders take up TWENTY QUESTIONS endurance challenge - the barista edition -

One of the most iconic equestrian events in the world, the Tom Quilty Gold Cup, will be held in the picturesque Warrumbungle region in central NSW from July 8-10, and a group of local junior riders is busily preparing to take part.

The Tom Quilty is a national event where horse r iders must cover 10 0 miles (160km) in one day.

The prestige associated with winning this event, as well as competing, is immense.

T hose who ma nage t o complete the challenge a r e pr e s ent e d w it h a sp e c i a l ly- c r a f t e d b elt buckle E ac h ye a r t he Tom Quilty is held in a different Australian state. n 2021 it was scheduled to be held at Tooraweenah, in the foothills of t he Wa r r u m bu n g l e Mountains, which would have been exactly 30 years since the event was held in the same location in 1991. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, there was no ride last year, but Tooraweenah will have its turn this July.

The event has captured the attention of a dedicated group of young competitors from the local region who are now training and trying to gain qualification to enter.

Local junior rider, Lara Duff has already qualified to compete on her horse, Pegasus. R iders must be 12 years old to enter, which Lara will achieve just 10 weeks before the event.

Hav i ng successf u l ly completed many 8 0km rides, Lara qualified with one 16 0km ride at the Tooraweenah Tom Quilty preview event held in July 2021.

“That was a tough ride, raining and cold, but my horse got me though along with encouragement from my family and friends. I can’t wait to participate in the Tom Quilty 2022, it’s very exciting and I’m so lucky to have it on home ground,” Lara said.

Lara follows in the footsteps of her g r a nd f at h e r, m o t h e r, br ot he r s a nd c ou s i n s and is thrilled to be part of such a long-standing

family tradition.

Another local junior, Charlie Bonham, is no stranger to the event, hav i ng successf u l ly completed a Tom Quilty ride in 2017 at the age of 13 in Queensland. Charlie regularly trains young Arabian horses and aims to bring home a second Tom Quilty buckle.

Isabel la Wor ner successfully completed her first 160km ride in 2021 and will team up with her mother, Sara Worner, t o r ide. B oth Isabel la a nd S a r a c om men c e d endurance riding in 2015 and are active members of the club. No doubt the sta r t of a nother long, family tradition.

Fou r t een-yea r- old Sophia Moppett has yet to qualify for the event. To do so she must complete a160-kilometre ride before July.

“I adore the sport and love the team that I ride along with, always willing to give a helping hand to anyone. I also love the challenge to get the horses through the vet checks sound and calm,” Sophia said.

“I have learned a lot ab out nut r it ion a nd hea lth for the horses.

Having the Tom Quilty in Tooraweenah is a great inspiration to qualify.”

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Coonabarabran Public How much f u n i s E a st er week at CPS? We had the best week.

In the final week of term one there were so many activities our heads were spinning. It is so nice to have parents back on the grounds for assemblies and other functions.

We welcomed many parents to discuss their child’s PLP prior to the disco. And then a fantastic night was had by all, dancing their cares away in the hall. Staff and students felt as if it is all back to normal again.

The next day, despite the sore heads from the celebrations t he n i g ht b efor e , ever yone came together to make hats with their buddy classes.

This annual event is always a hoot and everyone throws their environmental conscience to

the wind and embraces plastic, cardboard and paper, creating wonderful interpretations of Easter bonnets.

Ver y few o f t he budd i n g milliners actually know what a bonnet looks like, but that is not important at all. It is about creativity and having fun with other classes.

We t hen p a r ade d ou r spectacularly beautiful and interesting hats around the playground to an appreciative and enthusiastic audience.

After the consumption of a few eggs and the tense drawing of the ra f f le pr i z es , wh ich many generously donated for the cause of the dance group costumes and travel expenses, we waved everyone off for a safe and happy holiday.

Castlereagh League kicks off this Saturday

L ocal derbies this Saturday, 23 April, in the south and north of the vast Castlereagh League competition will highlight the opening round of the 2022 season.

T he Narromine Jets can expect a warm reception t o T rang ie’s A lan Burns’ Oval in what will be their first competition game in the Castlereagh competition after parting company with Group 11 at the end of the 2021 season.

The Jets have already e st abl i she d t h at t hey mean business in their new surrounds and they claimed the silverware in the annual Castlereagh League knockout that was played in Gilgandra two Saturdays ago, grinding out a hard fought 8-6 win over the Cobar Roosters i n t he f i n a l t h at wa s played in very heavy and wet conditions.

While too much cannot be read in to knockout form, any winning form i s g o o d for m a nd t he Jets will be buoyed by their initial outing in the Castlereagh competition.

T hey w i l l , however, be facing a stern test in the form of the Trangie

Magpies, who also showed glimpses of competitive form in their two outings at the knockout.

The Maggies will be looking for great support from what should be a substantial home crowd and the contest shapes as being a solid workout for both teams.

Meanwhile, in Baradine the northern Magpies will be hoping t o o p e n t h e i r 10 0 t h year celebrations with a victory over arch rivals, the visiting Coonamble Bears.

B oth sides put in encouraging displays in thei r k no ckout ga mes and an open and exciting game is anticipated to be played out in front of an expected big crowd.

The benchmark team f rom the tr uncated 2021 season, the Cobar R o ost ers, w i l l be at home to the Gilgandra Panthers in what should be a western blockbuster, with both teams willing to throw the ball around with strike players all over the park.

The football at Cobar’s Tom K night Memor ial Oval will be one of the highlights of what will

be a big fund-raising day and night being hosted by the Roosters at that venue for the Royal Fly

Doctor S er v ice, and again a very big crowd is expected to take it all in.

In the other first-round

games, Coonabarabran w i ll be at home to Dunedoo and Binnaway will host Gulgong.

The Unicorns take on the Baradine Magpies’ defence during a Castlereagh league tag match in 2021. This Saturday the Unicorns will take on Dunedoo at Coonabarabran’s number one oval in the first round of the season, while the Magpies will host Coonamble.

CENTRAL & WESTERN RACING by COL HODGES Bourke Picnic Races Sunday, 17 April A record-breaking crowd at Bourke on Easter Sunday saw Knee Slapper in an exciting finish win the 1600 metres Picnic Cup for Nyngan trainer, Rodney Robb.

Proving a bad result for bookmakers, Knee Slapper, a former South Australian galloper, was backed from $16 to $8 and

took an estimated $35,000 from the betting ring.

Emily Waters, from Tumbarumba, won her first race three weeks ago at Tullibigeal Picnics and she rode Knee Slapper very well at Bourke.

Leading all the way, Knee Slapper held on to beat Allez Rev (Ricky Blewitt, $8) by a head, with the $1.90 favourite Gossip (Leandro Ribeiro) a length away, third.

Gossip had won the recent Picnic Cups at Ardlethan and Tomingley, however, Leandro Ribeiro probed for a run at the top of the straight which did not materialise.

A protest third versus first was dismissed.

and 30 placings from 110 starts, Billy Bent Ear ($2.20 favourite) raced near the lead and won by over three lengths from Rebecca’s Quest (Ricky Blewitt, $2.50) and Three Rar (Dylan Stanley, $5).

First leg of the Leandro Ribeiro treble was the Brett Cavanough, Sconetrained Jackal ($2.50), which led throughout for a convincing win over Rewardus (Breanna Bourke, $10) and Dare To Fight (Wayne Wheatley, $2.20 fav) in the 800 metres Maiden Plate.

Leandro Ribeiro then rode last-start Hillston winner, Orezira, for Menindee trainer Wayne Marsden in the 1000 metres Class B Handicap.

The strongly-supported Lenroy (Wayne Wheatley, $6.50 to $3.50) looked a big threat in the straight, but was beaten three-quarters of a length by Orezira ($2.40 fav), with Keep No Secrets (Ricky Blewitt, $4.80) filling third place.

Bill Hayes, from Eugowra, who has made a return as a trainer after time off, has won successive races at Grenfell and Bourke with Run Callan Run. In the 1300 metres Class B Handicap at Bourke, Hoffy’s Dream (Emily Waters, $2.60) took the lead in the straight, but was overhauled and beaten a half length by Run Callan Run (Dylan Stanley, $4.20).

Sun Master ($6) finished third, however, was unlucky as Breanna Bourke reported she was disadvantaged when the

saddle shifted soon after the start.

Lightning Ridge Saturday, 16 April Experienced horseman Andrew Banks rode a treble, including the Cup winner, Fearless Mila, under unusual circumstances on Saturday at Lightning Ridge.

The final five races were flag starts after a barrier malfunction in the opening event, won by Gunnerside.

The last time flag starts were used in the region was well over 30 years ago, at Trundle in the central west when the barriers became bogged.

All that aside, it was a big crowd to see the wellperformed TAB performer Fearless Mila win the 1200 metres Lightning Ridge Cup for Dubbo trainer, Clint Lundholm.

Fearless Mila (Andrew Banks, $5) raced in a forward position and won by over a length from the Bryan Dixon, Gilgandratrained pair, Ecker Road (Zara Lewis, $4) and Fox Spirit (Angela Cooper, $6).

At the recent Mudgee TAB meeting, Fearless Mila finished second to the Brett Robb trained All Words, which won again on Sunday at Dubbo.

First leg of the Andrew Banks treble was the Peter Mills, Quirindi-trained Hillbilly ($4), which accounted for Turmoil (Jodi Worley, $5.50) and Saimaa (James Rogers, $10) in the 900 metres Class 1 Handicap.

Small field for ladies’ stableford LADIES’ GOLF A smaller field of ladies competed the Wednesday stableford played at the Coonaba rabran G ol f Club on 13 April, some out because of injuries, others with work-related issues.

The ladies that did play had a great time; weather was typical autumn with su n ny sk ies , a ba r my breeze and good company - what more could one ask for?

The winner on the day was L ou Coulton, who received a club voucher and a new golf ball for nearest the pin on the 13th hole. Lou Dowsett also received a ball for runner-up.

Cancer Support Charity Day Our big Charity Day in support of the local Cancer Support Group is fast approaching. This event w i l l b e held on Saturday, 30 April.

The ladies have been supporting this group for many years until COVID hit, meaning we could not run this Charity Day though 2020 or 2021. So, no holds barred this year.

We a r e h o p i n g t h e lad ies that have lined up as non-gol fers i n prev ious years will be in attendance this year.

It will be in the same f o r m at , i . e . o n e l a d y golfer with two, three, four or more non-golfers for a nine-hole Ambrose event.

Following golf a delicious luncheon will be served. Price is $25 for golf and lunch, $20 for lunch only. There will also be a trading table loaded with cakes, slices, Nell’s scrumptious Rocky Road, etc. Our raffle this year is for a $500 fuel voucher, plus wine and chocolates.

The Coonabarabran Bowling conducted its annual Easter Bowls Carnival over the weekend, with a great turn out of bowlers enjoying the mild autumn weather.

Pairs W i n ner s of t he pa i r s championships were John Davis and Tony Antaw,

who defeated Barry and Tim Wilkinson in the final.

the money in the fours’ champiobship, with Barry and Tim Wilkinson, John Franklin and Troy Brown

taking out top honours.
