The show must go on “I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a very bad mood for 40 years!” exclaims Ouiser Boudreaux, depicted by local actor Kathryn Abbott, evoking a roar of laughter from the audience.

The Coonabarabran Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS) p roduction of Rober t Ha r l i ng’s icon ic Steel Magnolias was a laughout-loud, pull-on-yourheart-strings affair.

T h e a l m os t se l l - o ut debut performance on Friday, 7 June, received rave reviews with nary a dry eye in the house at the Coonabarabran High School Hall.

A si mple pi nk set design, complemented by professional hairdressing chairs and equi pment, p rovided th e pe r fect fem i n i n e backdrop to allow the play to unfold.

G re at l i g ht i n g a n d effective use of the stage brought the characters into focus, which was further enhanced with a selection of satin a n d ve l ve t t e x t u r e d costumes.

Ove r th ree scenes, the audience was swept away to the f ictional north-western Louisiana

parish of Chinquapin, with small-town antics befitting of the smalltown crowd.

The stor y itself is centred around a group of women brought together at an in home beauty parlour, and how they address conflict and loss.

For anyone who has eve r sat i n the hairdressing chair, the scenes felt much like a familiar old friend with q u i r k y “c h a r a c t e r s ”, jokes about impractical husbands and a hell of a lot of jibes.

Practical hairstyling skills were also put to use, with washes, curlers and some big teasing, a d d i n g d epth to th e performance.

A last minute change to the cast saw Flo Cloud step up into the role of Truvy Jones, following Marissa Scott’s illness on the eve of show night.

D e s p i t e n o t understudying for the role, Cloud did a great

job unde r p res su re, gaining momentum at Saturday’s matinee and evening events.

Macaela ShepherdHagemann embraced the role of timid, bornagain Christian Annelle D u p u y - D e s oto, w h i l e Cherie Gaites delivered a confident, well-timed Clairee Belcher.

Kathr yn Abbott had the crowd i n stitches with her over-the top, neurotic study of Ouiser, and delivered a stand-out performance even as lar yngitis encroached.

However, it was the relationship bet ween mother and daughter, M ’ Ly n n a n d S h e l b y E a te n to n , p o r t r a ye d

by Jenni Maund rel l a n d A n n a b e l l e Pa r k respectively, that was at the heart of the play.

Maundrell’s stern and authoritarian mothering style contrasted beautifully against Pa r k’s yo u t h f u l a n d naive nature.

Wa t c h i n g t h e d u o interact on stage was a d e l i g h t, w i t h b ot h accomp l i shed acto r s relishing their roles.

M a u n d r e l l ’ s unexpected loss of composure and control at the arc of the play had many reaching for the tissues.

Although 3 5 yea r s o l d, Ste e l M a g n o l i a s has aged well and still resonates with a modern audience, dealing w i t h t h e m e s of l ove, loss, family, mar riage, health, homosexuality and beauty.

Lots of quips and oneliners such as “empty is the head that wears the crown” and “there’s no

such thing as natu ral beauty”, stay with the viewer after the curtains have closed.

Wh i l e m o s t p e o p l e would be familiar with the s ta r- s tudded f i l m ada ptat i o n of Stee l M a g n o l i a s fe a t u r i n g Dol ly Pa r ton, Jul ia Robe r ts, Sal ly F ield, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis, the production began its life as a stage play in 1987.

The story was based on Harling’s experience l o s i n g h i s s i s te r f ro m diabetic complications a f te r t h e b i r t h of h i s nephew.

It has been produced on B roadway in the

United States and on the West End in the United Kingdom, with a 198 8 Australian adaptation starring Nicole Kidman in her professional stage debut.

T h e C A D S performance has b e e n h a i l e d a g re at success, with a number of invitations to tour the play regionally.

Steel Magnolias d i r e c to r, D r M i c h a e l Armstrong said in spite of the offers, the group had not committed to anything further at this stage.

“I was overjoyed with how the production turned out on the weekend,” Dr Armstrong

said. “ We had n ea r se l l out crowds each p e r fo r m a n ce, w h i c h was fantastic to see.”

Steel Magnolias is the f i rst adult production from CADS in two years, af ter staging Geo rge O r we l l’s “198 4” back in 2020, and was developed in under 10 weeks.

“It is a huge commitment for the cast and putting everything together, and then it is all over very quickly,” Dr Armstrong said.

“It’s pure exhaustion.”

Council adopts 2022/23 Operational Plan The Operational Plan for 2022/2023 has now been adopted by Council and is available to view on Council’s website.

“The Operational Plan provides the community with an overview of the projects, programs and activities that Council will deliver in the next financial year ending 30 June 2023, along with proposed fees and charges and annual donations,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council mayor, councillor Ambrose Doolan.

“Council sought feedback from the community in relation to the proposed Operational Plan and appreciated the feedback that was received. It is important to seek the views of the community.”

Included in the 2022/23 Operational Plan Budget is: • Roads Improvement and Renewal: local - $2.6 million and regional - $1.9 million; • Plant and Equipment Improvement and Renewal - $2.2 million; •Urban Services including town streets related works (includes trees/gardens, footpaths, kerb and gutter, drainage, pavements), ovals, parks, swimming pools and other amenities improvements $3 million; • Improvements to Council offices and other property, public halls and cemetery equipment improvements - $2.2 million; • Tourism and Development related

improvements - $750,000.

• Rural Fire Services vehicles and enhancements - $1.4 million.

• Water - $4.1 million, sewer - $4.3 million and waste services $50,000 capital related improvements.

To fund these works, as well as ongoing services and activities, Council has adopted a number of increases in rates and fees and charges in 2022/23.

“We understand the past few years have been difficult for some of our community members and increases have been kept as low as possible while at the same time recognising the need for necessary works to be carried out to our infrastructure,” Cr Doolan said.

Plastic bags a thing of the past Warrumbungle Shire and the rest of NSW have joined other states like Queensland in banning the use of light-weight, single-use plastic bags.

Thicker plastic bags, or multiuse bags, found at s up er m a rket s l i ke Woolworths and IGA are still available.

But local businesses are divided as to whether or not the new laws will have any impact on the environment.

Linda Bartlett, owner of Eat It Cafe in Coonabarabran, said while her business is complying with the laws, she doesn’t believe it will make much of a difference.

Where it will make a difference she believes is businesses’ bottom lines.

“It’s an increase cost of 17 cents a bag for us,” Mrs Bartlett said.

“That might not sound like much, but when you factor in all the other increases ever y where, it’s just another cost for businesses to deal with.

“We’re carrying the cost too, we’re not passing it on to the customer.

“I really don’t think it will make much of a difference to the environment because people will just keep buying the new bags and throwing them out anyway.”

M rs Ba r tlett said the crackdowns on nonbiodegradable products will continue.

“In November they are

going to ban the foam containers too,” she said.

“So businesses will have to go with cardboard or sugar cane containers, which are triple the cost.”

Bartlett, said while it may take customers time to adjust, she felt it was about time the move was made.

“Personally, I think it’s long overdue,” she said. “ It ’s ab out t i me we caught up to other states

like Queensland, who had the forethought to ban them a long time ago.

“I expect we will see the odd customer get upset, but I think it’s a good thing.”

ENDORSEMENT OF COMMUNITY STRATEGIC PLAN

The Warrumbungle Shire Community Strategic Plan 2022-2037 has been endorsed after a period of public exhibition.

The Community Strategic Plan sets out the needs and aspirations of the whole community over the next 15 years, along with a series of strategies and actions to achieve the goals. The Community Strategic Plan is prepared by councils in consultation with the community.

The new Community Strategic Plan is available on Council’s website under the Integrated Reporting and Planning Tab.

ADOPTION OF OPERATIONAL PLAN AND DELIVERY PROGRAM

Notice is given in accordance with the provisions of sections 404-405 of the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW) that Council has adopted its 2022-2026 Delivery Program and 2022/2023 Operational Plan.

The Delivery Program sets out the programs that Council will undertake over the next four years, while the Operational Plan details the activities that will be undertaken in the next financial year, including the Revenue Policy and Fees and Charges.

Bucking the gender trend Jess Richards has become the first woman to complete her apprenticeship and become a qualified baker at the Coonabarabran Bakery.

While Jess couldn’t pinpoint as to why a disparity existed between men and women in the industry, she did take a quick shot at he r male counterparts.

“I think it’s because the men don’t want us women to show them up,” Jess laughed. “ H o n e s t l y, I f e e l v e r y p r ivi l eg ed to be the f i r s t fema l e bake r to come through the Coona Bakery,” she said.

“I’m also very grateful to the Flood family for giving me the chance and opportunity to make this happen.”

Ms Richards said the two biggest hurdles she had to ove rcome on the way to becoming a qualified baker was dealing with the pressures of TAFE and exams, but also having to hold back a little of her own outgoing personality.

“Speaking what you think is

not always advised, so a little bit of a learning curve for that was needed,” she said.

“The exams at TAFE always made me really nervous and I didn’t ever really want to go.”

While some might say the early morning starts would be a difficult prospect to navigate, Jess said not only did she relish the early kick offs, but it worked in well with her photography business.

The newly-qualified baker said her favour ite par t of the job was decorating the bakery’s vast array of cakes.

However, Jess would not be drawn into revealing what makes the per fect loaf of bread.

“Unfortunately I can’t share this. In the words of the boss man himself - Adam Flood we do not reveal the secrets of the golden products,” she said.

Extra hands on deck Four personnel from the Australian Defence Force touched down in Coonabarabran on Tuesday, 31 May, spending a week in the town and lending support to residents and employees at Cooinda Coonabarabran.

T he f r o st y st a r t t o winter was a shock to the Darwin-based army personnel, who were called in to help alleviate staff shortages in the aged care facility.

A COVID-19 outbreak at Cooinda over the past few weeks has severely impacted staff availability, further compounded by other winter ailments.

Cooinda chief executive officer, Leanne Redfern, said although the A DF personnel were not able to provide personal care or health care, they were kept busy with a myriad of tasks. “ T hey helped w ith cleaning, kitchen, meal delivery, resident entertainment, bus trips a nd b a s i c a s s i s t a n c e wherever needed,” Mrs Redfern said.

“I am sure that residents a nd st a f f appre ciat ed the extra suppor t and company.”

M rs R ed fern also acknowledged the Cooinda staff members who had been working extra shifts to help fill the staff shortages.

“They have been doing an amazing job and I am very proud of how our team has navigated this hurdle,” she said.

“We hope to be out of outbreak mode soon.”

As of Tuesday, 7 June, one resident in the nursing home was still testing

positive for COV ID-19, but only reporting mild symptoms.

COVID-19.

Weekly market wrap • The EYCI hit 1,128.83¢/kg cwt this week following stronger yardings.

• Heavy and trade lamb prices remain strong in the south as restocker sentiment eases.

• Slaughter improves for goats, cattle and sheep, with slaughter volumes higher year-on-year.

Indicators T he E a st er n You ng Cattle Indicator (EYCI) h it 1 ,1 2 8 . 8 3 ¢ / k g c w t this week on the back of stronger yardings in Roma. Yardings were up nearly 3,000 head weekon-week with mostly good quality local cattle, causing the EYCI reporting head to jump above 12,000. A premium of 38¢ on the n at ion a l aver a g e h a s pushed the indicator up.

R e s t o c k e r y e a rl i n g steers in Roma fetched a 66¢ premium on the n at ion a l aver age a nd contributed 28 per cent.

The highest contributor, at 33 per cent, was Dalby, which traded at 11¢ under the n at ion a l average.

Larger yardings in Dalby for the yearling steers and better quality in the category saw the prices lift by 7¢ within the saleyard but were still at a discount when compared to the southern states, where restocker sentiment has

been strong.

Medium steer prices have softened week-onweek by 36¢, continuing the volatility experienced in the indicator for the last three months. Many of these sales are going towards feeders, at 83 per cent of the total sales.

Higher grain prices and difficulties around supply is putting pressure on the feed lot sector and so reducing demand for these cattle. Muchea, in the west, had the highest premium at 546¢/kg lwt but C h a r t er s Tower s , which had a 39 per cent contribution, was trading 19¢ under the national aver age , c r e at i ng t he softening in the indicator.

T he West er n You ng Cattle Indicator (WYCI) has bounced back 19¢ we e k- o n -we e k a f t e r yardings softened by 106 head in Muchea and in Mount Barker by 170 head.

Feeder demand has eased from two weeks ago.

RURAL

Sheep Lamb prices have been increasing with stronger demand from processors for heav y a nd t rade lambs. Heavy lambs have strengthened 44¢ week-onweek, with 92 per cent of sales going to processors.

Yardings have softened by 4,000 head but still remain strong at 48,381 head this week. Southern saleyards were fetching premiums on the national average with the three highest prices found in Horsham, Wagga and Forbes. These sa leya rds t ook 4 5 per cent of the contribution between them.

Wagga Wagga yardings remained strong at 41,050 head. Recent wet weather has improved buyer sentiment and the quality across the saleyard. High competition for trade lambs from domestic processors improved pr ices weekon-week. There was also strong demand for Merino lambs with more buyers

on the rail. The national average price for trade lambs strengthened 38¢ week-on-week, with Wagga Wagga taking out the top price again at 965¢/ kg cwt. A greater presence of buyers from Victoria were competing with the local NSW processor buyers as restocker sales reduced by nine per cent from the beginning of May. Restocker sentiment s e em s t o h av e e a s e d nationally as the indicator softens by 57¢ week-onweek. Yardings have fallen below 10,000 head this week as key contributors see a reduced yarding – such as Ballarat, which had a 6,000 head drop in yardings this week.

Even though supply has eased, there is still strong prices to be found in the south. Ballarat has a 71¢ premium on the national average.

P roducers a re wa r y of the supply cha i n issues continuing, with

processors booked out months in advance.

Slaughter Slaughter rates have improved this week for cattle, goats, and sheep.

Goats improved 56 per cent week-on-week as new processors come online.

This has increased the slaughter rate to above 2 021 levels, with goat slaughter up 72 per cent year-on-year.

Cattle slaughter has improved by 9,625 head w e e k- o n - w e e k t o h i t the same levels as this time last year. However, slaughter rates remain under 2020 numbers.

Checking out on a high note While business is booming, several local accommodation providers have made the decision to get out while on top.

The general consensus i s t h at b u s i n e s s h a s picked up dramatically and on the back of that, at least three moteliers in Coonaba rabran a re look i ng t o sel l thei r properties to move on to the next phase of their lives.

A zalea Motel owner, S em r it G oitrem sa id family was the driving f ac t or i n put t i n g her business up for sale. “ W hen I moved here six years ago I had three kids and I wanted them to g row up in a small country town,” she said.

“Initially, the plan was to leave when the oldest two finished year 10, and we’d move s omewher e closer to universities or job opportunities.

“But when they finished year 10 two years ago I put the place on the market and that’s basically when COVID-19 hit, so I took it down.”

Ms Goitrem said since the end of the COVID-19 lo c kdow n , t he A z a le a Motel and businesses as a whole in Coonabarabran have started to thrive. “ We p u t o u r m o t e l back on the market at the beginning of the year and since then we’ve pretty much had 5 0 per cent occupancy rate,” she said.

“The visitor stays seem to have gotten longer as well. Instead of people staying one night and just travelling through, they are staying two or three nights and exploring our area.

“But it’s not just us, the whole town seems to be picking up, from the retail stores to the bakery - everyone seems to be doing pretty well.”

Lisa De Costa, from the Getaway Tourist Park, echoed the sentiments about how businesses are fairing post COVID. “ O u r busi ness has ex plo de d . Why am I asking these questions?

Because they are being asked by people all over

The anti-vaccination mob is sca r i ng people because they are being shouted at and surrounded by them when they want to cross the road, use the pedestrian crossing or want to turn the corner into Cassilis Street.

I have had one of them move i nt o t he st r e et , making me come to a fast halt. My dogs in the back seat where thrown around and I was a mass of jelly a f ter wa rds. I cou ld n’t even shout someth i ng appropriate at them.

M a ny pe ople have t a l ked w ith me about this anti-vaccination mob.

Everyone of them believe in the Australian citizens’ r ights t o demonstrat e their views as a part of a right in a democratic society. All would agree that the anti-vaccination m o b h av e a r i g h t t o demonstrate, but all also believe that enough is enough when they seem to be taking liberties which no other group would be allowed to do.

A ll people who have talked with me have said they are too scared to go within the area where the demonstrations are taking place.

My personal gripe is all of the above, but also the impression the constant demonstration must give to tourists. They must th i n k we a re a bu nch of irrational rednecks. I wouldn’t stop and have a walk around town. I don’t go to that part of town when the demonstrators are there because I would get harassed.

I quote: “In regard to my request to Council on 4 January 2 022 to have “outdoor furniture” in Neilson Park to be cleaned, why did it take 55 working days (almost three months) for Council to respond when Council’s letter to me, dated 5 January 2022, stated “You should expect a response to your enquiry within 10 working days”? “ W hy d id C ou nc i l ’s letter of 22 March 2022 advise me, in reference to my request of 4 January 2 022 , “of wh ich the outdoor fur niture was clea ned on sa id d at e ” when, in fact, the outdoor furniture was not cleaned until 18 February 2022? “ Has Pet er Br ow n , L eu r a (C o on a T i me s , 17 M a r ch 2 0 2 2 ) b e en responded to within 10 working days? “ W ho is actually responsible for the “running of ” the Wa r r u m bu n g l e S h i r e Council? “ I f it is the genera l manager, who employs this person?”

End of quote I actually received a letter from Warrumbungle Shire Council same day as posted - 17 May 2022, part of which stated: “ T his enquiry has been sent to the appropriate Council officer for their action and registered in Council’s system as Document ID 152605. You should expect to receive a response to your enquiry within 10 working days”.

And I did! In 10 working days.

Believe me, as Alice in Wonderland said, and I repeat, “It gets curiouser and curiouser”.

Equestrian EXPO

30 years of Expo celebrated The North West Equestrian Expo and rain seem to go hand in hand - and this year’s 30th anniversary of the event was no different.

by CHRIS WARD R eg u l a r dow np ou r s leading up to the extravaganza left the Coonabarabran Showground already soggy underfoot. With more rain on Friday, competitors, horses and officials were trudging through ankle deep mud.

However, Expo stalwart Rebecca Moxham said the weather failed to dampen the spirits of competitors and although some events were pushed back, officials were able to get through a lmost a l l d iscipl i nes unscathed. “ There was one class of show jumping that was cancelled and one phase of the pentathlon,” Mrs Moxham said. “ We g ot t h r ou g h everything else, although we had to reschedule and re-timetable a few events.

“Everyone was amaz i ng though a nd they understood. All the students and teachers were very helpful in making sure it all happened.”

Expo committee president, Kevin Sharp sa id he appre ciat ed everyone’s f lexibility in dealing with the disrupted schedule and commended the community for making the event so successful.

“Without the community support this event wouldn’t go ahead so we thank everyone for getting behind it,” Mr Sharp said. “ W h i le the weather wa s n’t e x a c t ly ide a l , everyone involved had a great time.”

A record number of schools were represented at t h i s y e a r ’s 3 0 t h anniversary event, although Coonabarabran H igh S chool f ielded a smaller team than in past years.

Despite the lack of local competitors, the small contingent of eight still per formed fa r beyond expectations. A stand out was Alex Letts who, on her horse Bart, came third in the 16 years Working Horse Challenge and first in her division of the EvA 80 eventing.

One of the main attractions to the five-day event was the appearance of jockey and The Voice contestant, Robbie Dolan.

The Irish born Group 1 jockey and singer wowed the crowed on Saturday evening, performing several songs.

Dolan said he hadn’t visited Coonabarabran before, but praised the Expo for what it was doing for the industry. “ It ’s a r e a l ly g r e at show and it’s great to see something like this put on for the kids,” Dolan said.

“It’s a great initiative for them to come there, compare their knowledge and have fun.

“One thing is, there are a million different jobs in the industry that you can do, you don’t necessarily have to be a jockey - there’s different careers out there.”

It was on ly a shor t visit for Dolan, who left early Sunday morning, but he didn’t rule out a return visit, particularly

in October for the town’s biggest race day of the year - the Coona Cup. “If there was a trainer that called, depending on what I was doing at the time, I don’t see why not.

I’m usually pretty busy though, but you never know,” Dolan said.

While Dolan was at the North West Equestrian Expo to promote the equine industry, he said a career in music would be his ideal choice.

“I would say I prefer singing because it’s a lot less consuming on your body,” he said.

“But, I love racing and can’t wait to get back in the saddle.”

Warrumbungle Shire Council mayor, Cr Ambose Doolan, gave a glowing report of the event and said the positive impacts are felt throughout the year and not just during the week of the Expo.

“There was something like 570 riders and 700 horses brought here. That’s a lot of horse feed from our produce stores and that’s a lot of mouths for our cafes and shops to feed,” Cr Doolan said.

“But most importantly, it puts our little town on the map because families come here to this event and have such a good time and create fond memories that they come back at other times of the year to experience the rest of what our area has to offer.”

Couperin back in Coona A North West Equestrian Expo competitor from Snowy Mountain’s Grammar School has a unique and interesting link to Coonabarabran.

B eth Dun n a nd her mother, Deb, purchased ex-racehorse “Couperin” from Victoria six months ago, with the goal of it becoming an eventer.

T he 13 -year-old gelding has connection to Coonabarabran, having previously not only raced here - but having won a class three, 1600-metre event on the local track in 2014.

At the time the horse was being trained by Sue Grills, from Tamworth.

Ms Grills had a mixed success rate with Couperin before retiring the horse in 2016.

Dur ing its ca reer Couperin recorded five wins, six seconds and two third placings, amassing a total of $90,275 in prize money.

Couperin proved to be a distance runner, having the majority of its success in races 1600 metres and above.

Now t he hor s e h a s swapped the wh ip for spe cia l ist event s l i ke dressage, eventing and show jumping...and also h as a fa nc ier n a me Lambourne Park Couperin.

His new owner, Beth,

has been r id ing for about eight years and is participating in the Expo for the second time.

Her mother said they didn’t have overly high expectations for Couperin, h av i n g on ly h ad h i m compete in three events

since owning him.

“At first we were a bit afraid he’d think he was back on the race track,” Deb laughed.

“We’ve had him in a few competitions so far and he has been improving with every outing, so we will

see how he goes here and hopefully we’ll see more improvement.

“But it’s nice to know there’s a bit of a connection there w ith h im and Coonabarabran. We love the Expo. We just wish it would stop raining!”

Ga reth R ossler was recently selected into the Diocesan team for rugby union. He is now eligible to play at the Polding trials in Forbes on Monday, 27 June.

Three boys - Henley Flood, Riley Young and Jack Stuart - were also selected to compete in the Polding Cross Country competition at Eastern Creek this week. This is an amazing effort for all the students!

Ye a r 6 r e c e n t l y conducted a beautiful mass for the staff and students at the St Lawrence’s Catholic Church.

Their theme for the mass was about missionaries and how we can all make a positive impact in the lives of others through our work as missionaries.

Seven students from Year 3 continue to prepare for their First Eucharist, which will take place on 19 June.

Year 6, with Fr Francis, conducted a mass with the theme centred around missionaries.

Coonabarabran Public Last week we opened our F irst Nations a c k n o wl e d g m e n t a n d celebration w ith a n a s s embly. O u r s c ho ol leaders did a fabulous job leading us in the singing of the Gamilaraay song, followed by some readings and then the national anthem. A busy week of activities followed with much c om mu n it y a nd school involvement at the centre.

Mrs Stanton came and spoke to stage one. She told us she was born in

Coonabarabran and grew up i n Q ueen ie Street , where she grew up with five brothers and sisters and three cousins and her mum and dad. She went to school there before she came to Coonabarabran P ubl ic. She expla i ned to us all where the old h igh scho ol was a nd primary and K-2 in the administration block.

She told us all about chalk boards and milk bottles from the milkman.

that they sat on. O ne thing she said that hasn’t changed is the uniform.

It was the same pattern, but in winter they wore a black d ress. No one had backpacks they had brown suitcases, which were very heavy.

Then we were all so shocked, and shrieked in horror when she told us about the cane. How the kids would have to go to the principal and they would get hit with a big wooden stick called the cane. Fortunately,

Mrs Stanton was a good student and never got the cane. This all sounded pretty scary until she told us about the games they played like rounders, yoyoes and marble.

Then we heard all about her grandmother who was born at Toorawandi and came from an Irish convict and a local First Nations’ woman from Maitland.

S he w r ot e a let t er t o keep the land that is now Burra Bee Dee, where she was given 620 acres and where she lived and raised nine children, with cows, sheep, a school, a well and even a shop. In the late 1900 it became a mission, which came with r u les a nd reg u lations limiting their behaviour and opportunities. Mary Jane worked hard and did a great deal for our community there.

Mrs Stanton explained that most local Aboriginal people were related to her, including her own great, great grandmother Queenie Robinson. We all listened intently and will remember all about the early lives and history she described. The part we had a bit of trouble understanding was that she d id n’t have T V or even a bike. Instead, they would build cubbies in the bush, look for five corners and swim in the river.

We a l s o h ave M r Brett Ashby coming in for cultural studies and to learn more about our First Nation heritage. He introduced us to ochre, volcanic rock, clay, and sandstone. He described where t o f i nd these resources in the bush. We felt the powder he made from them. He then talked about the colours and he showed us how to grind the rock up to make paint.

He made five different colours, each made from the different rocks.

Mr Ashby showed us how to be respectful and c o o p e r at i v e wh e n w e worked together, painting our ochre pictures.

We are busting to get out in the bush and find

our own rock paints and a nice smooth grinding rock on which to make our paint.

Mr Ashby has lots of fun things planned and we look forward to sharing this time with him every

fortnight, especially a big rainbow serpent he said we are going to paint for our room.

MEN’S GOLF T he C o on aba rabra n Golf Club’s June monthly meda l attracted 28 players, who took to the now extremely wet course on Saturday, 4 June. The weather was cold - winter has arrived and it’s not fun!

The A-Grade winner on the day was S Jones on 71, with Patty Cain the runner-up on 77.

B -Grade players found the course a lot easier then the A-Graders.

R egardless of the w i n t r y w e at h e r, f i v e brave ladies took to the Coonabarabran golf course to compete in the monthly medal sponsored

by Joh n T i lborgh's Fencing Contractor.

Scores returned revealed the difficulty of how the course is playing a f t e r t h e c o n t i nu i n g showers of rain. The scores returned were net 89 from two ladies, followed by net 90, 91 and 92.

On Saturday, 4th June, four ladies played in the same event and had the benefit of slightly better we at her, r e su lt i n g i n better scores. The lady winner was Zoe Holcombe with the excellent score of net 74. Julie Shinton was runner-up with net 84, followed by Lou Dowsett, net 87 and Kerrie Ward, net 88.

Zoe also won nearest the pin on the 4/13th hole.

Well done, Zoe. The next major event will be the N&NW LGA Tournament being held at the Tamwor th G ol f

Course on Tuesday 7th through to Thursday, 9th June. We will have players attending this event as representatives of ou r club.

impressive defence held the Eagles out until Dave Sulter turned the game around with damaging runs, breaking the line a n d o f f- l o a d i n g w i t h skill to the ever-present Lonnie Stone and Tom Redden, who both scored off Dave’s breaks.

The return from injury of Tom Redden was the spark that ignited the bac k l i ne; h i s t ac t ic a l kicking caught Yeoval out of position on several occasions and eventually resulted in tries to Dave Salter and A ndrew Hayne. Tom also made a clean break after Dave Su lter of f-loaded then threw a long ball to Nick Willoughby, who ran 70 metres to score out wide.

CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE In round seven of the Castlereagh League played on Saturday, 4 June, the Dunedoo Swans fended off a strong challenge by the Gulgong Bull Terriers at Dunedoo’s Robertson Oval to retain the Boronia Cup. Led up front by their captain coach and front rower, Brad Beshman, who scored two tries, the Swans had to work hard to keep the silverware, only just edging in front late in the game. They then clung on desperately in the dying minutes of the match to claim an important win for the club, taking the game 22 to 16.

It was a good day for the g reen and whites, with their league tag side returning to the winners’ list after their loss to Narromine the previous week, with the Swannettes registering a strong 32 to 10 win over the visitors.

The cool conditions at Narromine’s Cale Oval did not prevent a sizeable cr owd pack i ng i n t o witness the action between the Jets and the Gilgandra

Panthers.

T he v isitors were quickly out of the blocks and on the top of a glut of possession they had the Jets in all sorts of bother, having scored three tries in the opening 10 minutes, with their five eight David Smith scoring two along with one to centre, George Alchin.

H o w e v e r, t h e J e t s managed to stabilise the situation after the initial onslaught and with tries to Luke Thompson and half back Sam Gainsford they were well and truly back in the match at half time, with the scoreboard reading 16 to 10 in favour of the visitors.

The break seemed to invigorate the Panthers and they dominated the second half to run out 38 to 16 winners, although it must be said that the Jets contributed to their own downfall through poor ball retention.

It was better news for the Narromine club in the league tag, with the Jetettes registering a 26 to 4 win over the Pink Panthers, that win moving them in to the top four.

At Coonamble it was a point-a-minute affair between the Bears and t he T r a n g ie M a g pie s in the f irst grade, but u n for t u n at ely for the Maggies they could only lay claim to owning 18 of the 80 points scored, with the home side racking up a 62 to 18 victory.

In the final game the Cobar Roosters’ long road trip to Baradine did not seem to have any great detrimental effect on their players and they ran out convincing winners, 60-4.

There will be a general bye in the Castlereagh League competition this weekend due to the June

long weekend, with round eight to be played on 18 June.

Brown takes out state bowls honours LAWN BOWLS The 2021 State Lawn B owl s c h a mpion s h ip s that had been delayed due to COVID lockdowns, were played at the end of M ay 2 02 2 , w ith Coonabarabran and Zone 4 were represented on the big stage at Ettalong for the President Reserves in two disciplines - a triples team consisting of Dean McAlpine, Brett Bowman and Tom Bowman, and in the singles by T roy Brown.

The finals kicked off with the triples and the C o o n a b a r a br a n t e a m

wasted no time in letting their competitors know they were to be ta ken s er iou s ly a nd wer e a genuine threat.

Brett, Tom, and Dean bolted from the barriers in their first game, coming out convincing winners, 34 shots to 9 over Soldiers Point.

T he f ina l score i n round two was a much closer a f fa i r, w ith Coonabarabran winning 2 8 -2 2 aga i nst Nor th Sydney.

With only one more win needed to guarantee safe passage through to the semi finals, Brett, Tom and Dean left nothing to

chance, taking the match 30 shots to 13 over Umina, a team which is local to the Ettalong area and is accustomed to the greens there.

With the first two days of play being a great success for the Coonabarabran boys, day three and the semi finals arrived and waiting in the wings was the Kempsey Macleay RSL team, that had also won all three games in the sectional stage.

T he next 21 ends of play would have looked quick for a spectator and felt mentally draining as a player, with a see-saw battle taking place and

either team could have wa l ked away w ith the win. In the end it wasn’t to go Coona’s way, the local boys going down 2417. Kempsey then went on to lose a very close final against Cabra-Vale Diggers 25-23.

It was fantastic effort for the Coonabarabran team to make the semi f ina ls of the State P r e s ide nt ’s R e s e r v e Triples - well done Dean, Brett and Tom. President Reserve Singles Ju st d ays a f t er the tr iples had concluded, T r oy Br ow n was nex t up in the singles.

D ue t o ex t enuati ng circumstances the field for the singles was cut t o 14 , wh ich r esu lt ed in Troy being in a cutth r oat s e c t ion w ith a bye. This meant all Troy could do in round one was watch, wait, and see what the story told for his afternoon game against Shannon King-Mokaraka, of Tuncurry Beach.

With Shannon winning his game it was clear that Troy could not afford to lose. In an exciting game where both players made a break for the finish line, it was Troy who came out on top in a nail-biting 3130 win.

I n t he f i n a l r ou nd , with a win still needed to guarantee a berth in the semi finals, Troy played aggressively against Paul Hodkinson, of Castle Hill, to run away with a 31-22 victory.

Troy’s next opponent was Paul Cable, representing Windang.

Troy wasn’t troubled too much by his opponent early on, but in bowls nothing ever goes completely your way, with Paul putting up a fight and making Troy work for the win.

Coming away with a 31-21 victory, Troy booked himself a ticket in the final against Phillip Hall of Urunga.

Phillip brought years of experience to the final, having played bowls three times longer than Troy, and he showed that he was up for the fight. Phillip raced to a 9-2 lead early

on, putting the pressure on Troy to return fire.

Troy dug his heels in and weathered the storm, with the scores finally turning to Troy’s favour at 2120; the finish line of the mag ica l number 31 i n

sight for both bowlers.

With everything to play for, Phillip and Troy left nothing in the tank, each a nswer i ng the other ’s bowls. With one last surge the day would belong to C o onaba rabra n’s ow n ,

Troy taking the win 31-27.

T his was a g reat result and recognition for Coonabrabran, being the first time representing - and winning - a state f inal. Cong ratulations Troy.
