REDWOOD PRIMARY’S SCHOOL GARDEN BLOOMS WITH COMMUNITY SPIRIT AND AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION!
The School Garden at Redwood Primary School in St. Catherine, established by the Ole Farmers Association North America Inc. (OFANA), has quickly become a vibrant centerpiece of the community. This initiative, enthusiastically embraced by locals, promises sustainability and educational growth. The collaborative effort between OFANA, This is Jamaica, the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), the Principal, students, and parents has transformed the school grounds into a thriving garden. The community’s support is evident in their dedication to maintaining and expanding this valuable project, ensuring that it continues to flourish.
The benefits of the School Garden extend far beyond its aesthetic appeal. Students at Redwood Primary are now actively involved in agricultural activities, gaining hands-on experience and learning vital skills at an early age. The produce harvested from the garden will be used in the school’s cafeteria, providing fresh and nutritious meals for the students. Any excess produce will be sold, potentially generating funds to further support the school’s initiatives. This project not only fosters a sense of responsibility and teamwork among the students but also instills in them an appreciation for sustainable farming practices.

The Simpson Restaurant & Bar Opening In Atlantic City
A celebrity chef will soon serve up his Caribbean-themed soul food at a new restaurant along the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
The Simpson Restaurant & Bar will open at ACX1 Studios on Wednesday, May 1, according to an Instagram post from owner Wenford Simpson. The restaurant on Playground Pier will join Simpson’s other location on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, across the street from the Barclays Center.
According to a news release, the restaurant will bring more than 50 jobs to Atlantic City.
“Chef Patrick’s decision to open his second restaurant in New Jersey highlights the importance of Caribbean cuisine and culture in the region,” the release said. “He aims to create an atmosphere that makes guests feel at a family’s house, providing a welcoming experience for all.”
The Brooklyn restaurant’s menu features Jamaican dishes like Walkerswood pan jerk chicken, braised oxtail and butter beans, curried goat, and escovitch snapper. The Atlantic City spot will also feature seafood dishes and a full bar with premium alcohol.
According to his website, Simpson learned to cook as a child on the north coast of Jamaica in St. Ann’s Parish.
When he grew up, he brought his
culinary talents to several resorts, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and Disney Cruise Line.
Simpson eventually moved to New York City and became the executive chef of Negril Restaurant. He also worked in the city at B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, and the Highland Ballroom.
Simpson said he’s served about 400 celebrities, most notably former President Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey. He has also written a cookbook, starred in his own cooking show, and hosted a “gastronomic motivational tour.”

FOUR RENOWNED JAMAICANS FOR INDUCTION IN ST GEORGE’S COLLEGE HALL OF FAME
Four of Jamaica’s internationally recognised stand-outs in the areas of advocacy, law, finance and diplomacy are to be inducted into the 2024 St George’s College Hall of Fame during a banquet set for August 31 at the S Hotel in New Kingston.
They are Christopher Berry, chairman of Mayberry Investments Limited; Michael Hylton, former solicitor general; Professor Trevor Munroe, founding director of National Integrity Action, Jamaica’s chapter of Transparency International; and Christopher Chaplin, Jamaica’s honorary consul in Philadelphia and co-chairman of the Philadelphia Organising Committee of Team Jamaica Bickle.
They are all past students of St George’s College.
In making the announcement on the weekend, Donovan Chen See, chairman of the St George’s Hall of Fame Selection Committee, said the four outstanding leaders have done their alma mater proud, both locally and globally.
He said the criteria for selection by the six-member committee included: Community Spirit; Excellence and Achievement in a Particular Field; Inspiring

Leadership; National and/or International Recognition; Vision and Innovation and Service to the College.
“We feel proud of those selected for this year’s induction as they have been outstanding examples of the foundation which St George’s College has been laying over the past 174 years for the development of young men,” said Chen See.
The St George’s College Hall of Fame is the highest accolade by which Georgian Old Boys and Faculty may be recognised. Established in 2000, there are now 56 inductees, portraits of whom are prominently displayed at the St George’s College Hall of Fame Room, in the Archbishop Samuel E. Carter, S.J. Library at the North Street institution.
The Hall of Fame is hosted every two years.

Embrace Your Heritage: Applying for Jamaican Citizenship
The tropical allure of Jamaica is undeniable, with its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm, welcoming people. For those with Jamaican roots or connections, the opportunity to deepen your ties with this enchanting island by applying for citizenship for your family members is a step worth taking. Whether your loved ones were born abroad or have become part of your family through marriage, Jamaican citizenship offers a wealth of benefits and a sense of belonging to a rich cultural heritage.
Jamaican Citizenship by Birth
Jamaican citizenship by birth is a right available to anyone born in Jamaica before August 6, 1962, who was a citizen of the United Kingdom and its colonies at that time. Additionally, those born in Jamaica after August 5, 1962, automatically qualify for Jamaican citizenship. Proof of citizenship in these cases is straightforward: a birth certificate issued by the Registrar General’s Department of Jamaica is all that is needed.
Jamaican Citizenship by Adoption
For those who have legally adopted children from outside Jamaica, there’s also a pathway to citizenship. Under the Children (Adoption) Act, a non-Jamaican child who has been adopted by Jamaican citizens can claim Jamaican citizenship through either adoptive parent. The proof required here is an adoption certificate issued by the Registrar General’s Department of Jamaica.
Jamaican Citizenship by Descent
Perhaps the most common route for those with Jamaican ancestry is citizenship by descent. This applies to individuals born outside Jamaica to parents who were Jamaican citizens at the time of their birth. To apply, you will need:
• A completed Application for Jamaican Citizenship by Descent form.
• The original birth certificate of the applicant.
• The original birth certificate of the Jamaican parent (mother or father).
• The original birth certificate of the grandparent or great-grandparent if citizenship is being claimed through them.
• The original marriage certificate of the applicant, if applicable.
• The original marriage certificate of the parents if the applicant was born in wedlock.
• Any relevant documents showing a name change,
such as a deed poll or naturalization certificate.
• Valid government-issued ID for both minors and adults (passport or driver’s license).
• Two recent passport-sized photographs, with specific notarization requirements for mailed-in applications.
Important Tips to Avoid Delays
To ensure a smooth application process, it’s essential to check the following:
1. The father’s name must appear on the applicant’s birth certificate if citizenship is claimed through the father.
2. Consistent spelling of parents’ names across all documents.
3. Correction of any errors on documents by the issuing offices before submission.
Fees and Processing Time
For those holding a current or expired Jamaican passport, no fee is required to apply for a certificate of Jamaican citizenship, aside from courier and consular fees of $40. For those without a passport or who cannot produce an old passport (issued prior to September 2001), the fee is $140, payable via money order, cash, or credit/debit card at the Consulate.
The processing period for Citizenship by Descent applications is approximately 40 business days after the application has been transmitted to the Passport, Immigration & Citizenship Agency (PICA) in Jamaica. This period allows for transit time between the Consulate and PICA.
Final Thoughts
Applying for Jamaican citizenship for your family members is more than just a legal process—it’s an affirmation of identity, heritage, and belonging. By securing citizenship, you are ensuring that your loved ones can fully embrace their Jamaican roots and enjoy the benefits of being part of this vibrant nation. Whether you’re drawn by the promise of warm beaches, a lively culture, or a rich family history, Jamaican citizenship is a gift that keeps on giving.
So, take that step today. Celebrate your heritage and strengthen your family’s connection to Jamaica, where the heartbeat of the island can be felt in every corner, from the bustling markets of Kingston to the serene beaches of Negril. Welcome home to Jamaica!
