Organized by the Consulate General of Jamaica in New York, this Town Hall is set to be a pivotal event, offering a platform for Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica to interact directly with Prime Minister Holness. Discussions will cover a range of topics vital to Jamaicans both at home and abroad, from economic development and investment opportunities to social issues and government initiatives aimed at strengthening ties with the diaspora.

Together, they will provide comprehensive insights into the Jamaican Government’s policies that impact the diaspora, including efforts to enhance trade relations, boost investment, and foster sustainable development.

In a novel approach to ensuring broad participation, attendees are invited to submit their questions ahead of time. This will allow for questions to be grouped by theme, ensuring that even if specific questions are not addressed during the event, similar topics may still be discussed. This pre-submission process is designed to maximize the engagement and ensure a more inclusive dialogue.

Representatives from Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) will also be present, offering guidance on investment opportunities in Jamaica. In addition, members of the Jamaican Consular team will be available to address specific concerns related to consular matters such as passports, citizenship, and more.

The Lehman Center for the Performing Arts will transform into a hub of cultural celebration, with elements of Jamaica’s vibrant heritage on full display. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as there will be ample opportunities to interact with officials, gain valuable information, and connect with fellow members of the community.

The Jamaican Government continues to underscore its commitment to maintaining robust ties with its diaspora. The Town Hall in the Bronx represents a further step in that direction, reinforcing the importance of the Jamaican community in New York to the country’s ongoing growth and development.

The 4 Train stops at Bedford Park Blvd. Lehman College Station, while the B and D Trains stop at Bedford Park Blvd. Station. Prime Minister Andrew Holness with President of Delaware State University Dr. Tony Allen. Prime Minister Holness was awarded an Honourary Doctor of Humane Letters by the University as well as delivering the commencement address.

It’s Now Dr. The Most Honourable Andrew Holness!

Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Dr. The Most Honourable Andrew Holness, has made history by becoming the first sitting Jamaican Prime Minister to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Dr. Holness completed his doctoral studies in Law and Policy at Northeastern University in Boston, a remarkable achievement that he describes as a “lifelong accomplishment.”

Prime Minister Holness, now officially referred to as Dr. The Most Honourable Andrew Holness based on current protocol, completed his thesis on the impact of U.S. gun laws on violence in Jamaican society. His research delved deeply into factors contributing to the rise of violence, including loose firearm regulations and active participation in the illegal arms trade. This topic is especially pertinent given Jamaica’s ongoing struggle with gun violence and its devastating impact on communities across the island.

Dr. Holness shared the news of his doctoral studies during a speech at the Dr. Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship Awards on August 30. He also revealed that he began his studies online shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I started my doctoral studies just after COVID hit,” he told Nationwide News, highlighting how he adapted to the global shift to online learning.

The Prime Minister is set to officially graduate in June of next year, further cementing his commitment to both education and public service. This Ph.D. is just the latest addition to Dr. Holness’ impressive academic resume. Earlier this year, he was awarded an honorary Doctoral Degree of Humane Letters by Delaware State University. During that event, he also delivered the commencement address to the graduates, marking the first time a head of government had done so in the university’s 132-year history.

Reflecting on his own educational journey, Dr. Holness recalled the struggles he faced when he attended the University of the West Indies, Mona, at age 19. “I went to university on an adventure,” he said, reminiscing about how he relied on student loans, part-time work, and the sacrifices of his parents, a civil servant and a small farmer, to finance his education. His journey began at St. Catherine High School, where he served as both head boy and valedictorian, and continued with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Studies and a Master of Science degree in Development Studies.

Dr. Holness’ latest accomplishment is not only a personal milestone but also a source of pride for Jamaica. His pursuit of higher education while managing the responsibilities of leading the country demonstrates his dedication to lifelong learning and the betterment of Jamaican society.

As Dr. The Most Honourable Andrew Holness prepares for his upcoming graduation, his achievement serves as an inspiration to many, reminding us all of the value of education and perseverance, regardless of the obstacles we may face.

Navigating New York City During the UN General Assembly.

Essential Information for Consulate Visitors

The annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) brings world leaders, diplomats, and delegates to New York City, creating a bustling atmosphere in Midtown Manhattan. This year, the UNGA began on September 10 and will continue through September 24. For those visiting the Consulate General of Jamaica at 300 E 42nd Street (corner of 2nd Avenue), the event’s impact on traffic and street closures is particularly significant.

Increased Street Closures Near the Consulate

During the UNGA, security measures are heightened, and street closures are implemented to ensure the safety of all participants. While some closures have been in place since the start of the Assembly on September 10, the arrival of world leaders, which begins on Tuesday, September 17, will see an increase in the number of street closures and rolling traffic disruptions throughout Midtown Manhattan. This period is when traffic becomes most challenging, especially around the UN Headquarters, which is only a few blocks away from the Consulate General of Jamaica.

Streets around First Avenue, Second Avenue, and the surrounding cross streets, including the vicinity of 42nd Street where the consulate is located, will experience significant restrictions. Driving in these areas will be nearly impossible due to frequent closures, security checkpoints, and the presence of motorcades.

Travel Recommendations: Use the Subway and Walking Routes

For visitors with appointments at the Consulate General of Jamaica, it is highly advisable to avoid driving. Instead, prioritize using the New York City subway system, which provides a reliable and efficient way to reach the consulate without the hassles of traffic and parking.

Grand Central Station, located just a short walk from the consulate, is a major transit hub with access to several subway lines that can help you bypass street-level disruptions. The 4, 5, 6, 7, and S (Times Square Shuttle) subway lines all run through Grand Central, offering convenient connections to various parts of the city. In addition, Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) are accessible from Grand Central, providing further options for those traveling from outside Manhattan.

Given the proximity of the Consulate General of Jamaica to Grand Central Station, walking is another practical and often quicker option. Walking not only helps avoid traffic but also allows visitors to experience the vibrancy of Midtown Manhattan firsthand. Be prepared for a brief but manageable walk from Grand Central along 42nd Street to reach the consulate.

Stay Updated on Street Closures

To ensure a smooth journey, visitors should regularly check the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) website at NYC DOT Traffic Advisories for a full list of street closures and updates. This resource provides the most accurate and current information about specific closures, times, and areas affected, helping you plan the best route for your visit.

TRIBUTE

From Consul General Alsion Wilson, OD, on the Passing of Mrs. Jeanette HoSang, Matriarch of the HoSang Family

It is with profound sadness that we receive the news of the passing of Mrs. Jeanette HoSang, a beloved matriarch, devoted wife, caring mother, and a true pillar of strength within our Jamaican community, both here in the diaspora and in Jamaica. On behalf of the Government and People of Jamaica, I extend heartfelt condolences to her husband, Vincent, and their children, Damian, Sabrina, and Simone, as well as the entire HoSang family.

Mrs. HoSang was not just a remarkable businesswoman; she was a nurturer at heart, a quality that transcended every aspect of her life. A registered nurse by profession, her caring nature and dedication to service were evident in all that she did. Alongside her husband Vincent, she co-founded a business that began with the humble purchase of a small fried chicken shop in the Bronx and grew it into one of the largest frozen Jamaican patty manufacturers in the world. Her spirit of resilience, coupled with an unwavering commitment to excellence, has left an indelible mark on the business landscape.

The success of the HoSang family’s ventures, including the beloved JerkQ’zine restaurant, where Mrs. HoSang’s influence was palpable, is a testament to her passion and dedication. She was known to be deeply involved in ensuring that the restaurant maintained the highest standards, personally overseeing the kitchen to guarantee the delectable flavors that patrons came to love. Her commitment to quality and her love for Jamaican cuisine helped shape the dining experience and brought a taste of home to many.

Beyond her contributions to business, Mrs. HoSang’s philanthropic spirit shone brightly. Together with her husband, she championed numerous causes that supported the advancement of Jamaicans, both in the diaspora and on the island. This legacy of giving back has been passed down to her children, who continue to honor her memory through their dedication to community service and development.

Today, as we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the life of a woman who embodied grace, kindness, and strength. Mrs. Jeanette HoSang’s life was a beacon of hope and inspiration, and her impact will be felt for generations to come. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit and her legacy live on in the countless lives she touched through her work, her kindness, and her unwavering love for her community.

On behalf of the Government and People of Jamaica, I once again extend our deepest sympathies to Vincent, Damian, Sabrina, Simone, and all who knew and loved Mrs. HoSang. May her soul find eternal rest, and may her family find comfort in knowing that her legacy will forever be cherished and remembered.

General Passport Information

Security Information

The Jamaican passport is a valuable document that proves identity and citizenship as well as facilitates travel.

As a passport holder it is your responsibility to care of this important identity document. Although a Jamaican passport is issued in your name, it remains the property of the Government of Jamaica and maybe withheld or withdrawn at any time. It should not be altered in any way by the holder and should not be allowed to pass into the possession of any unauthorized person.

The possession of a Jamaican passport does not exempt the holder from the compliance with the immigration regulations in force in any country or from the necessity of obtaining a visa or other entry permit that may be required.

Identity Theft and You

What is identity theft?

Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. It is a serious crime that can wreak havoc with your reputation, finances, travel plans and much more. Resolving the matter can take time, money and may require patience.

Protect your passport

Never give out personal information contained in your passport (including photocopies) unless you are confident that it is for a trusted organization or individual. Please note that the passport bearer assumes all responsibility for giving information contained in the passport to a third party.

What to do right away?

Report it to the police and PICA

Security and Your Passport

A Jamaican passport is one of the most important identity documents one can possess and therefore must be kept in a safe place at all times. Once a passport has been reported lost or stolen, it is no longer valid and should not be used for travel. This is to ensure that it is not used for fraudulent purposes. Attempted use of a passport that was reported lost or stolen may result in difficulties and or delays at ports of entry.

What is the best way one can prevent a passport from being stolen?

Our advice is:

• Try to keep your passport is a safe place that is known to only you.

• If you are travelling with it do not leave it unattended

• Do not practice leaving your passport with anybody for any prolonged period

• Limit who you give your passport to carry out

transactions on your behalf

• Do not travel around with it unnecessarily

• Keep all your identity documents in a safe place to avoid the theft of your personal information

• If you are using your passport for identification purposes ensure that it is at a reputable organization and ensure that the document is returned to you

• Do not allow persons to travel with your passport

• Do not leave your passport in parked vehicles

• Always keep a copy of your valid passport in a safe place.

What are common mistakes people make that lead to their passport being stolen?

Giving it to people to do transactions on their behalf

Leaving it unattended in vulnerable areas ( Business places, in draws in a common living area)

Travelling with it in a handbag even though it will not be required for use on that journey

Travelling with it in their back pockets thus being vulnerable to pick pockets

What to do if your passport is lost or stolen while abroad?

• First report any passport losses or thefts to the local police in the country you’re in as soon as possible. You’ll need the crime reference details for the embassy.

• Secondly report the theft or loss to the embassy, consulate or high commission of the country you are in.

• When you make a report to the embassy, consulate or high commission, they will give you a Lost or Stolen Notification form. The Embassy, Consulate or High Commission will record the loss or theft of your passport and forward the information to PICA. PICA will then deactivate your passport to reduce the risk of someone else using your identity
