USACE Builds Underwater Levee in La. to Block Saltwater

A dredging company began construction Oct. 11 on a 1,500-ft.-wide underwater levee designed to block a wedge of Gulf of Mexico saltwater from reaching public and industrial water supply intakes on the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish and New Orleans.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced in a news release that Weeks Marine Inc., which has a regional office in Covington, La., has moved its JS Chatry dredge and associated barges and pipelines into place just north of the Phillips66 Alliance Refinery site.

From there, the company will dredge sediment from the bottom of the river and pump it to a location near Myrtle Grove to build the underwater structure, known as a “sill.”

Corps officials declined to disclose the price of the dredging contract to NOLA.com, the online site for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, but earlier in October the USACE estimated the project would cost about $10 million.

The Mississippi River at the Myrtle Grove location is around 90 ft. deep, and the wide earthen structure could rise as much as 45 ft. from the river’s bottom. That could require ocean-going vessels, which often have 50-ft. drafts, to reduce the amount of cargo they are holding, or to unload part of the cargo south of the sill, to avoid running aground on it or damaging it.

Saltwater Slowly Creeping Into River

The Gulf of Mexico’s saltwater is able to move up the river because of a lack of rainfall this spring, summer and fall in the upper Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri river valleys. The Mississippi’s low flow lets the saltwater creep slowly upriver beneath the river’s fresh water.

The USACE estimated the leading “toe” of the saltwater wedge was already at mile marker 57.2 on Oct. 11, but officials said the higher part of the wedge that could cause problems for water intakes was about 20 mi. farther south.

“Throughout the construction phase, the Corps will test salinity levels in the river to determine where the saltwater wedge is and how high the sill may need to be built,” according to the USACE statement.

Saltwater has reached a Plaquemines water plant in Boothville, and will eventually spread to one in Pointe a la Hache, both of which are south of the sill. A drinking water advisory is already in effect for residents using water from the Boothville facility due to elevated levels of sodium and chlorate in the water.

NOLA.com reported that Plaquemines Parish officials have not yet announced whether reverse osmosis water treatment units it was trying to lease have arrived for installation at the two lower river water plants.

CrewsInstallTempBridgeOverIan-DamagedSanibelCauseway

Vehicles once again began rolling across southwest Florida’s Sanibel Causeway Oct. 11, just 13 days after Hurricane Ian sliced into the 3-mi.-long bridge that links the resort island to the mainland.

A convoy of more than 350 trucks and trailers bringing help to the storm-battered barrier island climbed the first span of the freshly patched connection from the mainland. At a news conference the same day, Gov. Ron DeSantis promised everyone else, including residents, would be able to do the same Oct. 21.

Spectrum News 9 in Tampa reported that among all the vehicles crossing the temporary bridge were more than 200 bucket trucks, and 150 line and pickup trucks towing 50 trailers and two tractor trailers onto the island. Along with them were additional first responders to aid in recovery efforts while final road repairs are made.

Ian broke the causeway in three places on Sept. 28, washing out chunks of the spoil islands that held up the roadbed, the Fort Myers News-Press reported.

For the first week following the storm, workers, evacuated islanders, equipment and supplies could only be delivered to the islands via air or water since the land route had been destroyed. That will continue, DeSantis said, but the addition of over-theroad transport will help a lot.

“You can only helicopter or barge so many people or so much equipment,” he noted, adding that the question became:

“How can we get more trucks on the island of Sanibel as soon as possible?”

Many of the trucks crossing the repaired bridge were for workers to be able to start repairing the power grids on Sanibel and its neighbor to the north, Captiva Island.

The convoy included crews from the Lee County Electric Cooperative (LCEC), Florida Power and Light (FPL), Duke Energy and other Florida electricity providers.

The trucks were part of a “massive logistical operation” that included hauling food, water, portable restrooms, laundry, portable showers and drone teams to survey flooded areas,” said Kevin Guthrie, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM).

Jared Perdue, secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), told the Fort Myers news source that staffers from around the state have swarmed southwest Florida, inspecting bridges and restoring traffic lights and signs. Most of the causeway work, he said, has been to fix the roadway and islands leading up to the bridge.

“The actual bridge structures, thankfully, are in good shape and have been inspected and are safe for passage,” he said, “so now it’s really a matter of getting the causeway rebuilt and linking everything back together.”

The next step in the road rehab is its paving and road striping, Perdue said.

DeSantis also spoke about work to restore Pine Island, northeast of Sanibel, which got a temporary bridge constructed in early October.

Electric crews there are clearing debris, replacing poles and stringing new lines. Power was restored to one quarter of Pine Island by Oct. 13, including at the island’s Publix and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, and at some water treatment plant substations. The week of Oct. 17 to 21 would see a third of the island and the Matlacha area back online, the governor said.

Sanibel’s Electric Power to Be Back Soon

The News-Press reported Oct. 16 that LCEC officials announced several key sites on Sanibel should have their power restored Oct. 20.

“Thanks to many forces working together, the backbone of the system will be rebuilt,” spokesperson Karen Ryan said in a release. Essential services like the island’s school, water treatment plant, and one of its fire stations could be back online by [that date], with the other station back to full power the next weekend, she added.

“Once the critical infrastructure is rebuilt, LCEC and FPL plan to work section by section to energize the island over the next two weeks,” Ryan explained. “By October 23, City Hall and public safety facilities are estimated to be in service.”

Massive Effort BringingIslands Back to Life

Saltwater, downed trees, damaged or broken poles, and an impassible causeway made the work a challenge, but several things helped speed restoration to the devastated barrier island, she said:

• The governor’s office and other agencies helped with access, line worker support and other resources.

• A total of 500 FPL line workers were mobilized to the island the second week of October as part of the extended partnership between the company and LCEC. Support also included a generous supply of utility poles and materials, six substation electricians, and many other logistics personnel working shoulder to shoulder with LCEC employees.

• LCEC critical infrastructure remained strong during and after the storm. After proper assessment, cleaning, analysis and testing, the transmission line and substation were energized, allowing for repairs to the backbone of the system, Ryan said, to enable homes and businesses to begin receiving power.

Sanibel Island’s main transmission line was restored Oct. 14, she told the NewsPress, and now that it is back on, work can begin to distribute power to the rest of the island.

Harder hit sections of Sanibel, as well as those on nearby North Captiva Island, will take longer to rebuild, Ryan said.

Doosan’s Smart X-Care Enhances Machine Telematics

Doosan Infracore North America recently unveiled its new Smart X-Care telematics monitoring facility at the heavy equipment maker’s headquarters in Suwanee, Ga.

The Smart X-Care Machine Monitoring Center (MMC) is a centralized location that receives and disseminates machine telematics data as part of Doosan’s new and enhanced subscription-based offering to its customers.

Through the DoosanCONNECT telematics system, engineers and employees at the facility keep track of a Smart XCare subscriber’s machine on the program’s Dashboard to check for issues such as critical fault codes, upcoming or overdue service, and warranty expirations.

Stojan Arezina, an electrical engineer and the telematics division manager of Doosan, explained that the Korean manufacturer still offers most telematics services free of charge to its customers using their DoosanCONNECT smartphone app or by accessing the system on a Web browser.

Currently, the Smart-X Care service is available to owners of newly purchased Doosan construction equipment. The monthly fee is $19.99 per month, but once customers buy a new machine, they will receive a free, six-month introductory subscription. Thirty days before the free service is up, Doosan will send a notice alerting them to its expiration.

“I feel that the way we are implementing Smart X-Care is anything but pushy,” said Arezina. “Since everyone gets a six-month trial period, they have time to decide whether it is something from which they can benefit.”

New Service ‘Stepped-Up Level of Care’

Prior to the Smart X-Care MMC, the same data existed in the DoosanCONNECT telematics systems available to contractors and operators, he said. The difference now is the enhanced service has its own dedicated monitoring center and group of technicians as well as the Dashboard, or machine tracking system.

Arezina added that the MMC communicates with telematics personnel at Doosan’s equipment distributors to deliver critical information.

“It is right there on our big screen, and we can always ref-

erence it and share it in real time,” he said.

To address a machine issue, he said, “The Smart X-Care system itself actively sends messages to the customer and dealer. Then, the Doosan Telematics [DTM] team has an opportunity, based on what we are seeing on the big screen, to reach out to customers and dealers and see if they are not doing service because there are parts missing, or they are waiting on parts. It may be that we can provide more technical training. By getting more involved in that customer/dealer communication, hopefully Smart X-Care MMC is speeding help to each side.”

As he sees it, having DTM representatives engaged in the process shows Doosan’s “stepped up level of care for our customers and dealers,” according to Arezina. “It is more than we just sold you a machine and now you are on your own.”

Doosan also wants its Smart X-Care MMC to enable deal-

ers to improve their service, generate more revenue via parts, use data that it actively sends them to predict what their machines will need and manage their parts and stock levels better, he said.

“They can see when we send them a message that ‘Hey, here is a list of the machines that are coming up for service.’ They can go back to their parts department and say, ‘These machines are due for service and will need these parts. Do we have them in stock, or do we need to order them?’”

Financial Benefits of Telematics Top Selling Point

Arezina joined the company last March, the latest engineer at the heavy equipment manufacturer to create solutions that save time and money for customers of Doosan’s diverse lines of construction and forestry machines.

Heading up the operation is Telematics Manager Stojan Arezina, who gave a brief presentation of the machine data monitored on the massive dashboard. Working at one of the stations for machine monitoring is Greg Alcock, Doosan telematics analyst.

Turner Building Cost Index...

Turner Construction Company announced that the third quarter 2022 Turner Building Cost Index — which measures costs in the non-residential building construction market in the United States — had increased to the value of 1311. This represents a 2.18 percent quarterly increase from the second quarter 2022 and an 8.62 percent yearly increase from the third quarter 2021.

“We are experiencing a robust market with numerous mega-jobs.Ashortage of skilled labor continues to lead contractors to be more selective in the projects they pursue. Wages are increasing to attract more labor into the industry and to incentivize skilled labor to travel to meet project needs,” saidAttilio Rivetti, the Turner vice president responsible for compiling the Cost Index.

“Material lead times continue to impact pricing.Afocused and strategic approach to procurement that engages contractors, designers, suppliers, manufacturers and clients reduces the risk of price escalation and produces the most competitive results for our clients.”

Turner has prepared the construction cost forecast for more than 80 years. The building costs and price trends tracked by the Turner Building Cost Index may or may not reflect regional conditions in any given quarter. The Cost Index is determined by several factors considered on a nationwide basis, including labor rates and productivity, material prices and the competitive condition of the marketplace. This index does not necessarily conform to other published indices because others do not generally take all of these factors into account.

I-73 Provides First Glimpse of Boom Supersonic Site in N.C.

If you are driving along Interstate 73 near Greensboro, N.C.’s Piedmont Triad InternationalAirport (PTI), you will find the shoulders of the freeway closed for a con struction project that started Oct. 3.

And what you will see are the first pub licly visible indicators that crews are build ingBoomSupersonic’smanufacturingfacil ity at PTI.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has closed the shoulders of the interstate in both directions for the next two years as it constructs access roads funded by a state development grant forBoom,officialstoldWGHP-TV,basedin nearby High Point.

Although the work between I-73’s Mile Markers 109 and 111 might not directly or routinely interfere with traffic flow, con struction vehicles and workers will be in the area until late summer 2024 as they build roads on both sides of the highway and a new overpass to connect them.

Jet Could Be First SupersonicSince Concorde

Last January, Boom Supersonic, head quarteredinDenver,Colo.,announcedplans to build a manufacturing facility for its supersonic Overture passenger jet at the

Greensboro airport, which also serves the cities of Winston-Salem and High Point.

Boom has contracts to deliver the Overture, which is designed to cruise at 60,000 ft. and reach a speed of Mach 1.7 (or roughly 1,304 mph) while using 100 percent “sustainable aviation fuel” to fly for American and UnitedAirlines by 2029.

If the jet is successfully flown with pas sengers, itwouldbethefirstsupersonictodo so since the last the British-made Concorde flew in 2003.

Although the official groundbreaking for the Greensboro jet factory has not yet occurred, dirt is being turned for the con struction, PTI Executive Director Kevin Baker told WGHP-TV in an email Oct. 3.

In August, when Boom signed a 40-year leasefor61acresatPTI,ittookanoptionon an additional 61-acre parcel on what Baker described as “the other side of I-73,” which would be to the north of the highway.

“Yes, the roadwork is for Boom, but will alsoserveanyandallothertenantswemight have on that part of the airport,” he told the television station.

An NCDOT map shows that there are no newaccessrampsonI-73,butthereareadja centroadsonbothsidesoftheinterstate. The stateagencysaidtheseroadwayswillextend

east and west around the jet overpass that was built several years ago to connect the PTI property to its large parcel of undevel oped land north of the interstate.

Additionally, the map displays a newly drawn overpass further east that an NCDOT spokesperson indicated was a planned con necting overpass for the two frontage roads, according to WGHP.

Boom Investing $500Mto Build Jet Plant

The state of North Carolina, Guilford County, and the city of Greensboro all con tributed incentive dollars — approximately

$130 million — to inspire Boom to invest $500 million in the next five years and hire 1,761employeesatanaverageannualsalary of at least $68,000. Company officials have said that the workforce could grow to 2,400 at PTI by 2032. Those employment figures do not include contractors and suppliers that might move to the Triad.

The state’s $106.7 million from a Job Development Investment Grant includes buildingnewhangarsattheairportaswellas the required road improvements. The PTI’s Baker confirmed that those dollars are pay ing for the construction currently under way along I-73.

“Other ongoing work is the grading of the site for Boom,” he explained. “The building pad itself is nearly complete but grading for less schedule-critical areas of the site will continue over the next few months.”

In total, PTI has more than 1,000 acres available in several large parcels of land, most of it to be used by the roads now under construction.

WGHP reported that at PTI’s August board meeting, Chairperson Paul Mengert mentioned the airport had also received queriesfromotheraerospacecompaniesthat could join HondaJet, HAECO, FedEx and others already working at PTI.

VDOT, Branch Civil Widen U.S. 58, Improve Steep Decline

U.S. 58 in southwestern Virginia carries traffic through picturesque scenery, like Jefferson National Forest and topping Lover’s Leap Mountain.

Although the scenery can be impressive, the curving twolane roads with steep downhills can test motorists’ patience and nerves and is problematic for truckers.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has partnered with Branch Civil to fix some of these difficulties on a 7.4-mi. stretch that includes the road over Lover’s Leap Mountain. The state intends to widen the road from two lanes to four, enhance access to the Lover’s Leap overlook and remove some of the anxiety from the steep downgrades.

The $300 million design-build project began in 2021 and will be completed in 2026.

In addition to widening Route 58, plans for the project include building wider shoulders, improving secondary road connections, enhancing the intersection with Route 8, adding turn lanes at secondary road connections, and providing two truck escape ramps and a truck brake check area. The Lover’s Leap Overlook, now just a pull-off, will have increased parking and turn lanes for safely entering and exiting the overlook from U.S. 58.

The project will have three components.

Western segment: Four lanes with raised, grass median (18 ft.), also will provide the width for left-hand turn lanes to make secondary road connections.

Central segment: Four lanes with wide separation between eastbound and westbound lanes. Two new eastbound lanes will be constructed. The new construction will provide gentler downhill grades.

Eastern segment: Two lanes in each direction with a 4ft. paved median that connects to the existing Stuart Bypass.

The job is part of a larger 36-mi. corridor improvement program beginning southwest of Hillsville and continuing east through Carroll, Floyd and Patrick counties to approxi-

mately 1 mile west of Stuart. The Route 58 Corridor from Hillsville to Stuart is the last remaining section to complete the widening of Route 58 from Virginia Beach to I-77. The Lover’s Leap section is the fourth and most critical section out of the six sections to be constructed between Hillsville and Stuart with Branch Civil being the Design-Builder for these first four sections.

The current project begins just east of Vesta and ends at the existing four-lane Route 58 Stuart Bypass.

Transforming a steep and winding two-lane mountain road into a flatter and straighter four-lane highway, complete with shoulders and guardrails, means that workers and their equipment will have to take some huge bites out of existing hills and mountains and fill existing deep hollows.

Cut sections can be as much as 500 ft. in height and fills as much as 300 ft. deep. The total excavation will be enormous — approximately 11 million cu. yds.

“I’ve been doing construction all my life and it’s the largest earthmoving project I’ve ever been associated with,” said Jeff Humphreys, design-build project manager of Branch Civil.

A project of this size has large needs for permanent materials.

• 429,000 tons of crushed aggregate

• 168,000 tons of asphalt

• 7,800 ft. of large-diameter pipe for deep drainage

• 37,000 ft. of small-diameter pipe for surface drainage

• 92,000 ft. of guardrail.

• Nine precast box culverts

Humphreys believes truckers will love this project when completed.

“We are taking a lot of curves out of the road,” he said. “Also, the existing road has 9 percent grades, while the new roadway will have a maximum 7.4 percent downgrade. The new roadway lanes also will be 12-feet wide, with shoulders. The old lanes are a foot narrower with very narrow or no shoulders.”

Workers will be excavating cut slopes as high as 500 ft. and fills as deep as 300 ft.

Ellis Pace manages many of the field operations and is frequently found operating the machines.

John Pace, owner of Tarheel Paving & Asphalt company in Hendersonville, N.C., has seen his company prosper over its 43 years.

While navigating through the peaks and valleys of an often-volatile business, Pace has always maintained an excellent reputation while serving the two Carolinas.

“We have a reputation as the best paving company in our area,” he said. “We are also the largest and oldest privately owned paving company in Hendersonville. That reputation comes from the fact we have well trained experienced employees that are meticulous in their paving work.”

Pace Started Tarheel Paving at Young Age

The 66-year-old Pace has been around paving projects since he was six years old. His father, Bill Pace, owned Pace Brothers Construction.

“If I wasn’t in school or practicing sports, I was working for my dad paving,” Pace said.

It paid off when he used the experiences to pay for his college tuition by patching and sealing driveways, often for his college professors.

motor grader, a small Vibromax roller and a worn out LeeBoy gravity feed paver,” Pace said. “With some crafty negotiation, I borrowed $9,000 from J.B and was able to get into the paving business with no money down. I then traded my Harley Sportsmen for a single-axle dump truck and Tarheel Paving Co. was born.”

Due to his dedication, top notch service and quality work for his clients, Pace was able to expand his business in 1988 when he purchased a 3-acre tract of land in downtown Hendersonville to build a new shop and office.

By 2001, Pace decided Tarheel Paving company had grown to its capacity. The decision was made to purchase a new ADM MileMaker asphalt plant.

“We won NCDOT contracts before we even knew we were required to have our own QC lab to test the asphalt,” Pace said, laughing. “It was baptism by fire. The first year we put down around 200,000 tons of asphalt.”

In 2008, when the economy collapsed, Pace sold the asphalt plant and auctioned off most of his large DOT paving equipment.

“We have a reputation as the best paving company in our area,” said John Pace, owner of Tarheel Paving & Asphalt. “We are also the largest and oldest privately owned paving company in Hendersonville.”

After graduating from college in 1979, Pace decided it was time to try it on his own. He leased a small tract of vacant land and bought a small 12-ft. by 12-ft. aluminum office building, which he still owns today.

The next task was finding some cheap paving equipment.

“J.B Pace was an old friend of mine who had three pieces of paving equipment for sale for $18,000: A 503 Galion

Firm’s Next Generation of Leaders in Place

In 2016, Pace’s oldest son, Derrick, graduated from UNC Wilmington and joined the business working as an estimator and project manager. In 2019, he was followed by his younger brother, Ellis, who graduated from Wofford College.

Tarheel Paving Has Faith in Caterpillar Equipment, Dealer

“I honestly never had any idea my two sons would end up working together at Tarheel,” said John Pace. “It just sort of worked itself out very naturally. Derrick’s demeanor and personality was a natural fit for managing the office, from estimating, to finance, to human resources. Ellis, on the other hand, was just like me. He preferred to be outside running crews and the occasional piece of equipment. I worked daily with both of my sons and in a very short time, I realized I could trust them completely and, with that in mind, I let loose of the reins a little.”

Wanting to surround his sons with talented individuals that possessed a strong moral character, Pace hired Barry Bonnett, who had previously worked at Tarheel back in the early 2000s.

“Barry is our lead estimator as well as project manager, but most important he serves as a mentor to my two sons and the men and women who work at Tarheel Paving. Barry always provides a keen perspective on things, which broadens the way we look at decisions.”

Today, John Page still proudly serves as CEO of the company as he eases toward retirement, while his two sons serve as vice presidents.

Their mother, Melanie, also has long played an integral role in supporting the vision and culture of the paving and asphalt company, according to Derrick.

“She has worked alongside my father from day one,” he said with pride. “Mom has always helped with personnel, marketing, customer service and public relations. This company is involved in the community, and she has done a fantastic job of keeping those relationships alive over the decades.”

Paint It Black

Derrick and Ellis have incorporated innovative ideas at Tarheel Paving that confirmed to their father that they have a solid grasp on how to keep the business growing.

For instance, the brothers wanted to distinguish the company from its competition by using equipment that did not

sport the usual construction yellow color.

“We thought, ‘What can we do to stand out from the crowd,’” Ellis Pace said. “Derrick and I have always loved black, and we believe the transition from yellow to black symbolizes the idea of clean and quality work under a new generation.”

Coincidentally, Tarheel Paving prefers to use Cat equipment that it gets through the Asheville branch of Carolina Cat, one of a network of locations that exclusively distributes Cat products throughout the western half of North Carolina. One of the unique customizations that the full-service dealership and its manufacturing partners can offer its customers is the choice to repaint its equipment.

Derrick and Ellis Pace figured that having their paving pieces custom-painted gloss black, in keeping with its other equipment, trucks and asphalt plant, could be an effective marketing move. In doing so, the company’s on-road equipment is now more eye-catching and likely to draw the attention of potential clients slowly driving past one of its paving projects.

“I’ll admit I didn’t understand that at first — I’m old school,” said John Pace. “But I thought, ‘Well, they’re the ones that are going to run things here, so if they want black,

that’s what it is going to be.’ Carolina Cat gets the yellow pavers straight from the factory and into a paint booth, and when they come out and you look at them, you can see that it all works together.”

The first machine Tarheel had repainted black was its 2020 Cat AP600F paver. In 2022, it bought two more black machines, a Cat AP655F paver and a new Weiler P285 paver, according to Ellis Pace.

Connection to Carolina Cat Is Rewarding

The link between Tarheel Paving and Carolina Cat in Asheville has long been a beneficial one for each company.

Besides offering Cat construction equipment, the distributor also sells and services Weiler paving equipment, a manufacturer closely affiliated with Cat, and another maker that Tarheel Paving prefers.

John Pace recalled kicking off his connection with both Cat and the dealership when he bought his first Cat paver in 2014.

“Back then, I wanted a track paver, and I liked the Cat 655,” he said. “I needed a paver that I knew I could get repaired easily. To my way of thinking, buying a brand-new

Tarheel Paving’s Next Gen Leaders Have Innovative Ideas

paver from Carolina Cat was the best way to go because they would stand behind the product.”

Pace describes Ben Patrick, his Carolina Cat sales representative in Asheville, as a “straight shooter” who told him, “‘Johnny, don’t worry about anything. We have the muscle behind us to take care of your needs if something happens to this paver.’”

In addition, Ellis Pace believes that Dane Bambach, his Carolina Cat TC, “is one of the most knowledgeable paving techs in the industry.Any time we buy a new piece of equipment, or I have questions, he’s right there to ensure we are always taken care of.”

“Dane is a quality human being and a man of true integrity,” John Pace said.

“If I was going to spend $500,000 on the Cat 655, I wanted to make certain I wasn’t going to have to worry about problems with it,” he said. “I didn’t have a lot of money then to chase problems and get things fixed. And it turned out the decision I made was the right one.

“To a business owner like me, it is just so comforting to know that if a problem arises, you have a company that will send its service trucks out on site to take care of any issues,” said Pace, “and we also use them a lot to work on equipment at our asphalt plant that we don’t want to have to move up to their Asheville shop.”

Weiler Paver Perfect for Pathway Jobs

Tarheel Paving is planning to run a new paving crew solely to take care of the needs of its private customers. It will be in addition to its other crews handling larger, commercial

efforts.

They have at their fingertips Weiler’s latest model, the P285 paver introduced last January to be a lighter version of the manufacturer’s popular P385B, a model that has enjoyed more sales in North America than any other paver produced in the last seven years, according to Carolina Cat.

“Sometimes these smaller jobs get pushed to the side because of our bigger projects,” Pace said. “But equipping the new crew with the Weiler P285 allows us to be the fullservice paving company that we want to be. Up until this point, not having a reliable, versatile and smaller paver like the Weiler kept us from doing a medium-sized parking lot or a little driveway.”

Now, the contractor can run the Weiler to increase the amount of golf course work it has been doing over the past two years as well as creating municipal walking trails, according to Derrick Pace.

“[The city] has been receiving more funding to install nice long pathways that connect up to others in town allowing people to enjoy the scenery of the mountains around Hendersonville,” he said. “Those jobs, where you need to pave a path that is eight- or nine-feet-wide and a couple of miles long, is becoming more routine in our industry.”

What makes the Weiler P285 the perfect machine for this type of paving, John Pace said, is “every other paver ever built has a screed that is, at minimum, eight-feet-wide, but this model is 7½-feet-wide, something that was attractive to us because we wanted to be able to use a smaller machine to pave cart paths at golf courses that have a width of eight feet or 8½ feet.

“That extra six inches allows us better maneuverability

and makes a world of difference in paving,” he added. “Plus, Weiler equips them with extensions to make them up to 15feet-wide, so you get the best of both worlds from that little paver.”

Pace Took More Calculated Risk

In 2013, after years of dealing with the economic crash, Pace decided once again it was time for Tarheel Paving to produce its own asphalt and put to use all the lessons he learned during the crash.

“Living through the crash taught me one thing: keep your debt low,” he said.

With that in mind, Pace explained that he purchased a used Cedar Rapids batch plant that “after six months, and two million welding rods later,” opened as the new Tarheel Asphalt plant on the edge of Vulcan Materials’ Hendersonville quarry.

Once the plant was running, Tarheel shifted its efforts to paving city streets and large parking lots, leaving the DOT work to the larger companies.

“In the end we are all about quality and efficiency, while being neat and clean and having good employees that want to work at Tarheel Paving,” John Pace said. “We also want people to understand that when they call us, they know they are going to get a professional job and if some aspect of the job is not done correctly, Tarheel will go out of its way to fix the problem, no questions asked. That’s just what we do.”

National Pavement Expo Sets Schedule for Event in Charlotte in January 2023

Educational Advisory Board (EAB) members for the National Pavement Expo (NPE) And Conference completed their work this summer, pouring over proposals and selecting compelling educational topics and knowledgeable speakers. It’s all part of the run-up to the event, which is scheduled for Jan 25 to 27, 2023 in Charlotte, N.C.

For EAB member Todd Eichholz, owner and CEO of A&A Paving, Roselle, Ill., the process of choosing educational sessions became a bit easier due to a slight shift in submission rules.

“We used to put out a call for speakers and everybody would submit classes they wanted to teach,” Eichholz said. “This year we gave guidance on the types of classes that we wanted. These are the topics that we believe can really help contractors move to the next level of their business. We then got to pick the best of that class and really determine the best speakers and the best content.”

The show brings together vendors and contractors who make their living from asphalt and concrete paving, sealcoating, striping, sweeping, crack repair, pavement repair and snow removal.

Early registration rates are in effect for NPE through Oct. 28, 2022. After that, Advance Rates will be on offer until Nov. 31. Ultimately, the cost of registration amount to a wise investment that can have tangible effects on business, according to NPE.

“Since I started attending NPE, I’ve grown my business five times the size it used to be, because I’ve made relationships with other owners and contractors throughout the whole country,” Eichholz said.

“These are guys who I can call and I’m texting every single day asking, ‘How did you do this? What worked for you?’ I’m learning from guys who have much larger companies and I’m always trying to help guys who are still in the early stages — because I’ve already made the mistakes. The relationships I’ve made at NPE, coupled with what I’ve learned from speakers and equipment manufacturers, is why my company is five times the size it was when I first started attending.”

The potent combination of structured educational sessions, show floor interaction and networking events are all in place and a great way to start the

kind of relationships that can help the business.

NPE recently announced that a networking party at the NASCAR Hall of Fame has been confirmed for Jan. 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. NPE also will introduce the 1st Annual Driveway Games, an area on the expo floor devoted to children-at-heart competitions including three-point shooting, big wheel drag racing and axe throwing.

Porscha Brooks, marketing manager, added “NPE 2023 isn’t just serious business, it’s serious fun.”

Eichholz has a message for contractors who’ve never made the trip to NPE, or those who have not been back for a few years; Now is the time to gather inspiration, knowledge and contacts.

“Pavement maintenance will always happen,” he said. “We’re a very important industry and there will always be

the need for work. Contractors must learn how to adapt and evolve so they can stay relevant and profitable. That’s why you need to come to NPE. If you can’t adapt and evolve, you’re going to be left in the dust.”

While the billions spent on infrastructure don’t necessarily filter down to the NPE audience, there’s a silver lining that bodes well.

“When there’s not a lot of infrastructure and road work, the bigger companies start playing in our sandbox,” Eichholz said. “They’ll tend to take work very cheaply just to keep busy. If those guys are busy, there’s less competition for our type of work. We want to keep those infrastructure guys busy doing what they’re best at, and leave the work that we’re the best at to us. The Infrastructure Act will keep them busy.”

HAMM Enters Electrical Machines Market With New Tandem Rollers

With eight models in the HD CompactLine, HAMM is entering the market segment for tandem rollers with electric drives.

Electrified tandem rollers, hybrid solutions and ECO mode: For many years, HAMM has been developing fuelefficient machine technology in order to achieve an efficient and, in turn, resource-conserving workflow on the construction site.

One milestone included the Power Hybrid roller from the HD+ series. With eight electrified tandem rollers, HAMM is now entering the segment for fully electrical construction machines.

Resource-Conserving Power Train

In all current series, the power train has been continuously optimized and designed for operation at reduced speeds. The operating companies therefore save fuel each day.

The automatic engine stop also reduces consumption: It automatically switches off the engine after a few minutes of downtime, while also taking into consideration the requirements for the exhaust gas cleaning systems. The ECO mode, which is integrated into all series, also helps the driver to compact in a way that they can easily save fuel.

Quiet Power Hybrid Rollers Save CO2

Back in 2016, HAMM was already the first manufacturer in the world to combine a diesel engine with a hydraulic accumulator for the development of alternative drives. With this Power Hybrid roller from the HD+ series, it was possible to reduce the fuel expenditure by approximately 15 percent — all without having to compromise on compaction power. This also was coupled with a reduction in noise emissions.

Emission-Free Compaction

With Electric Tandem Rollers

More and more municipalities are demanding low-emission or completely emission-free construction machines.

In the future, wherever compaction must be carried out free of emissions, the electrically powered tandem rollers in the HD CompactLine series can take over the compaction.

When operating the electric tandem rollers, there are no differences to the diesel-powered models, and even the compaction power is identical, according to the manufacturer.

Fully Electrical Solution

Conceptually, HAMM is relying on a fully electric solution: Due to a high degree of electrified components, the compaction specialists achieve an optimal energy yield.

Upon demand, with the Power Hybrid rollers from HAMM, the hydraulic accumulator supplies up to 20 kW more than the diesel power unit in a short time.

A maintenance-free Li-ion battery with a capacity of around 23 kWh supplies the components via a 48 V onboard power supply. Furthermore, the energy released from the drive engines and vibration motors when braking is used via recuperation.

The bottom line is that the battery can be used to tackle an entire working day. To charge the permanently installed battery, plugs for 230 V and 400 V mains power are included on-board.

Electric Combination Roller With Oscillation: Quiet, Low-Vibration, Emission-Free

The electric drive also drastically reduces the noise emissions since there is no longer any noise from the engine. This makes the electric tandem rollers ideal for all areas in which you want to compact with as little noise as possible.

Since, in these environments, a low load with vibrations is often required, the compaction specialist is presenting electric vibration and oscillation rollers, as well as an electric combination roller with oscillation.

Operating With Biodiesel, HVO

Most of the HAMM rollers that are currently on the market can already be operated with non-fossil fuels. This includes biodiesel, i.e. diesel fuel that is derived from plants, as well as HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil). These can be mixed in with the diesel fuel or can replace it entirely. This also includes biodegradable hydraulic oils for the standard product range.

Use These Tips to Minimize Impact of Diesel Fuel Prices

No one in the construction industry needs to be made aware of rising diesel prices over the past year. They’ve felt the pain. Through the first week in July, the average price of diesel fuel was nearly 70 percent higher than the year prior.

There’s no single magic bullet to reduce fuel costs, improve fuel efficiency or help you navigate through these unprecedented times; however, a group of strategies can certainly help.

Shop Around for Fuel, Insist On Transparency

Roberta Wright, CEM and fleet coordinator of the city of Lynchburg, Va., has learned to shop around when it comes to fuel prices.

In 2018, when she discovered she could get a better price from other vendors than the vendor on contract, she broke the contract and started to get quotes for every load of fuel. The net savings added up to more than $103,000 over 5 years.

With an increasing number of supply chain issues, this year Wright has returned to contract purchasing, but with a twist. She asked participating vendors to show documentation of what they paid for the fuel, plus their constant, delivery fees and the total price per gallon of fuel for each load.

“It’s not that I am trying to undercut everyone. It’s my job to get the lowest price.”

While your business may not have the buying power of a municipality, the point is to keep vendors honest by keeping the fuel pricing transparent.

“Anyone can do it,” said Wright.

If you’re fueling at retail, several apps can help you identify the lowest price for gas and diesel near you such as Gas Buddy and Drivvo.

Track Fuel Costs With Fleet Management Software

Wright highly recommends fuel management software to help managers keep an eye on costs. Reports from FuelMaster software show the vehicle number, who fueled the vehicle, the number of gallons, date, time, pump and product. She adds in the fuel costs, which change every time they load their two on-site tanks.

“Having some type of monitoring system reduces theft,” said Wright.

When she sees fuel efficiency decreasing, she can have the maintenance team identify any issues.

Dig Into Telematics

Telematic data offers valuable insight into fuel efficiency and machine utilization.

“Across the industry, telematics data is often underutilized,” said Larry Herman Jr., telematic support supervisor at RDO Equipment Co., which represents ConExpoCon/AGG exhibitors John Deere and Vermeer.

According to Herman, many factors can contribute to fuel burn rate and excessive fuel consumption.

“Telematics systems, like John Deere’s JDLink, can track utilization data including idle time, fuel consumed while in idle, and compare that data across the fleet to identify

with a specialist at the dealer who can offer in-person or remote support to help customers delve into their data and capabilities. The answers aren’t always clear-cut.

“Auto-idle/shutdown can be beneficial in some situations, but not every situation as each business and use-case is different,” said Jacob Koon, an RDO telematics consultant based in Texas.

“For example, an excavator on a pipeline job may be continually digging and have relatively low idle. That machine may be a good candidate for auto-shutdown because its job is to be constantly ‘working.’ However, another excavator on that same job may have very high idle because it’s being used to hold the pipe in place while it’s being attached.”

Be Transparent With Customers When Implementing Fuel Surcharge

California-based, Graniterock burns through approximately 3 million gallons of diesel fuel each year, producing and delivering concrete and other materials to customers in the San Francisco Bay area.

“We pride ourselves on setting a price and sticking to it,” said Rich

other,” said Sacher. “Customers appreciate that the fuel surcharge is something they can clearly show to their own customers.”

The company announced the surcharge in a letter to customers and explained the decision in both a video and podcast.

Across the industry, fuel surcharges have become more common. In some cases, contractors and government agencies are delaying projects and/or spreading out work over a longer time period in the hopes that fuel prices drop and work can be completed more efficiently.

Convert Trucks to Compressed Natural Gas Hybrids

With compressed natural gas (CNG) priced at $2.52 per gallon, converting your trucks to run on CNG and gas, or CNG and diesel can bring significant savings, all while reducing emissions. Conversion kits from Green Energy Solutions effectively convert your trucks to dual-fuel hybrids, running approximately 20 to 30 percent CNG.

According to Business Development Manager Kyle Flint, one of its clients, Oklahoma-based B&H Construction, has seen fuel costs go from $11,600 per employee to $4,800 per employee after converting most of their truck fleet.

“Everything more than a half-ton has been converted,” said Flint.

opportunities for improvement,” said Herman.

JDLink’s Machine Analyzer tool allows managers to compare data for the entire fleet, specific groups of equipment or machine types.

Another area to focus on are the gears or modes the machine is being operated in.

“If a machine isn’t being operated in the optimal mode [eco, production, etc.] or in the optimal gear, it won’t achieve maximum fuel efficiency,” said Herman.

According to Herman, John Deere’s JDLink system allows managers to see where their machines are hitting key utilization on job sites. This is based on machine load factors, engine loads and gearing.

“Too much hard utilization and you are wearing the machine and burning more fuel,” said Herman. “Too low utilization and you are burning excessive fuel where a smaller machine could better perform that work.”

With telematics data in hand, managers and foremen have the information they can use to coach their operators to maximize productivity with utilization.

Herman encourages managers to sit down

Sacher, executive vice president of the materials division. “However, this year, we could never keep up with the velocity of change.”

As a result, the company did something it has never done before — it instituted a fuel surcharge. The fuel surcharge is based on a publicly available data source and adjusted monthly.

According to Sacher, Graniterock chose a fuel charge, because it believes it is the fairest option that offers full transparency to its customers. To ease the burden, it stood behind customers with long-term commitments.

“Anytime you have a challenge in a supply relationship or a contractual relationship it forces you to reach out and challenge each

Conversion kits are easily installed and include a tank package suited to the vehicle, plus hoses, tubes, fittings, pressure regulator fuel delivery system, sensors and processors. The cost for a diesel assist kit is approximately $15,000 to $20,000, while the cost for a gas kit is $13,500 to $15,500.

There are a number of government incentives for organizations that convert their vehicles to CNG because it is a renewable, cleanburning biofuel. Green Energy Solutions will have products on display at ConExpoCon/AGG 2023.

Don’t Overlook Machine Maintenance

It’s never a good idea to skimp on machine maintenance, especially those tasks with a direct impact on fuel efficiency.

According to RDO’s Herman, air filters should be cleaned daily and changed regularly. Fuel filters should be monitored for water or sediment that could lead to poor fuel economy. Lastly, be sure track tension and tire pressures are set to the proper points to avoid overworking your machines and burning more fuel than is necessary.

Doosan DD100 Dozers in Full Production, On Way to N.A.

he new Doosan DD100 dozers are being produced at the manufacturing facility in South Korea. Customers can expect to see an increasing number of Doosan dozers in North America as more machines arrive at dealerships.

Doosan Infracore North America unveiled its first dozer at a media event last December in Arizona: the 10-metric-ton DD100. The pre-prototype machine garnered significant interest from the media, and Doosan moved ahead with finalizing its first pilot machines.

In June of this year, Doosan shipped its first DD100 dozer from South Korea to North America. The machine arrived in August and was delivered to a customer in Pennsylvania. Shortly upon its arrival, the customer quickly put the machine to work at its topsoil production facility.

“It’s been an exciting 10 months since we announced our first dozer, then proceeded to manufacture our first DD100,” said Moo Young Park, engineering manager, Doosan Infracore North America. “We expect our dealers and customers to embrace the new Doosan dozers and to see more of them on job sites yet this year.”

Looking ahead to 2023, Doosan plans to offer a larger model — the DD130 — in North America. The 13-metric-ton model is expected to launch in Q1 next year.

DD100 Highlights

Doosan entered the North American dozer market with a smaller dozer size, competing in the 140-hp and under category. The new DD100 dozer is at the top of its class for operating weight and horsepower. Ideal for residential and light commercial construction, the dozer’s main task is fine grading.

“The under 140-horsepower size class presents the biggest opportunity for Doosan based on North American dozer sales volume,” Park said.

Setting the DD100 dozer apart from other manufacturers in the under 140-hp size class is the machine’s power-to-weight ratio. This design was intentional; Doosan planned to make a machine that can offer more power to the ground and superior tractive effort.

Productivity

Productivity is driven by the dozer’s 6way variable angle pitch blade. Customers can choose from two blade options: a standard 2.9 cubic yard blade or an optional 3.4 cubic yard capacity blade. The blade moves freely to lift, tilt and angle, and offers twoway mechanical adjustments to change the blade pitch to control how steeply the blade will dig into the ground. Operators can adjust the blade pitch from 54 to 58 degrees. Also available is a blade shake button for operators to quickly remove materials stuck

to the blade.

Technology

Advanced technologies in the new DD100 dozer deliver more precision to help operators meet exacting specifications.A2D grading system option is available to make precision grading easier, even for novice operators.

For further grading accuracy, Doosan offers a 3D machine guidance and machine control option in partnership with Trimble. The 3D system requires the installation of a second monitor in the cab and uses GPS technology for greater grading accuracy and ease of operation.

Electrohydraulic control is standard, making the DD100 dozer easier to operate. Operators can customize the controls to their individual preferences. More experienced operators can adjust the machine for finer control.

The DoosanCONNECT Telematics system is a standard feature on the Doosan dozer, making it easy for customers to remotely monitor and maintain their machine. They can monitor the health, location and productivity of the dozer from a user-friendly mobile app and website. The customer’s dealer can also see the equipment status and notify them when it’s time for service to minimize machine downtime.

Visibility

One of the biggest differences between the DD100 dozer and other dozers is the visibility to the machine’s blade. The front engine compartment of the Doosan DD100 dozer offers a narrower design to make it easier for operators to see their work.

• The precleaner is tucked away in the engine compartment to maximize front visibility.

• The electronic cooling system was

moved to the back of the dozer to further improve front visibility.

• The cab’s low-profile front pillars provide maximum glass area

•All-glass doors provide a full view of the working environment.

“Visibility is the name of the game,” said Ray Trainor, co-owner of Ratoskey & Trainor. Trainor and his business partner, Rob Ratoskey, were the first to take possession of a Doosan dozer in North America.

“In smaller machines, when you’re doing roadways and putting stone on grade, you’ve got to see what you’re doing, and the visibility in the Doosan dozer is good,” Trainor said.

For further visibility and safety, a standard rearview camera provides operators with an additional view of the dozer’s surroundings. Also standard are high-illumination LED lights and four premium wiper blades.

Operator Comfort

Doosan designed the dozer cab to offer best-in-class operator comfort. It starts with a smooth ride, due to an air-suspension artificial-leather seat, even when starting and stopping the dozer. The machine’s heating and air conditioning system is designed to keep operators comfortable in every season,

and front and door glass defrost vents help improve visibility.

A user-friendly, multilingual Doosan Smart Touch screen displays all important settings and information on one screen. Operators can easily read the touch screen, monitor critical machine functions and control machine settings, such as the rearview camera, heating and cooling, radio and Bluetooth wireless technology. Operators have access to a hands-free audio system and can connect a Bluetooth device to play music. They also can answer phone calls using the hands-free mode.

A keypad located to the right of the operator has buttons for the operator to control

the dozer’s wipers, air conditioning system, temperature control, fan speed, defrost, travel alarm and working lamp. Adjacent to the keypad are a USB power socket and a 12V power socket for charging purposes.

For additional operator comfort, an adjustable armrest can be moved up or down to a precise position that’s most convenient for the operator. The dozer’s cab has a suspension system that dampens vibrations and provides protection against impact. The system absorbs shocks and vibrations much more effectively than a conventional cab mount.

Fuel Efficiency

The Doosan DD100 dozer is powered by a 3.4-L D34 diesel engine and does not require the use of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to meet current emissions standards. The same engine has been used in other Doosan machines and has performed well. Operators can select the dozer’s ECO mode to reduce daily fuel consumption up to 5 percent without sacrificing grading performance. This fuel-saving feature lowers the pump power output when working in lower tractive conditions.

Additional fuel-saving features include auto idle and auto engine shutdown. If the

CatOffersCommandRemoteOperationforMediumDozers

To boost jobsite safety in hazardous dozing conditions, Caterpillar announced the expansion of Command remote machine operation to Cat D5, D6, and D7 Dozers.

Command for Dozing removes operators from the cab and offers remote operating from a safe distance in applications such as overburden/reclamation work, ripping overburden or leach pads, slurry pond dozing, and operation around hazardous materials or unstable surfaces.

Next generation dozers are shipped from the factory remote ready, making field installation fast with only a few additional parts required. With Command fully integrated with the machine’s electronic and hydraulic systems, remote operation delivers quick response, smooth control and virtually no latency.

Companies have the option of equipping dozers with line-of-sight (LOS) or non-lineof-sight (NLOS) operation, and a groundlevel switch quickly toggles between manual and remote dozer operation. To help improve jobsite productivity, Command allows production to restart immediately following disruptive processes, such as blasting in quarry applications.

Beyond improving safe operation and increasing productivity, Command for

Dozing offers a potential solution to worker shortages and added training opportunities for newer operators. By allowing the operator to work outside the machine, Command opens opportunities to those with physical limitations which prevent them from climbing into the equipment. It can attract a new generation of worker while increasing the longevity of experienced operators.

Two Options, Precise Control

Portable and lightweight, the command console (LOS) allows workers to work outside of the cab while remaining on site and in direct visual contact with the dozer. With its range reaching 437 yds., the console positions the user for optimum visibility.

Requiring no on-site communications infrastructure, it is ideal for short-term and emergency remote operation. An ergonomic console layout features intuitive controls with ISO symbols that provides access to all dozer functions, while an LED display offers clear readout of machine status.

Furthering operation simplicity, the console (LOS) system supports multiple assist technologies the operator would have from inside the cab, including traction control, AutoCarry and stable blade. Unlocking with an electronic access card, the console can be

configured to control another machine equipped with Command by simply changing out an RFID chip. Its lithium-ion battery provides a quick charge and long run times in varying ambient temperatures.

Built-in safety features stop all dozer movements if the remote shutdown switch is pressed, wireless communication is lost, or the console is tilted more than 45 degrees.

The command station provides non-lineof-site operation from the comfort of an airconditioned office on-site or many miles away, as distance is limited only by the capabilities of the wireless network. By eliminating the fatigue-inducing vibration of machine movements in the cab, operators can work with less fatigue.

The configurable station features a similar feel to the cab with familiar controls, complete with pedals, joysticks, adjustable seat, switches and storage. Multiple screen displays offer visuals from the left and right cutting edges, blade top-center and rearview that includes the ripper.

Beyond supporting assist technologies offered by the console (LOS), the command station (NLOS) offers compatibility with blade load monitor, slope assist and Grade with 3D with the same response time as in the cab. Users can easily switch to operating a different command-equipped machine — dozer, wheel loader or excavator — from the same or different sites with virtually no downtime for shift changes or for travel to the job site.

With its range reaching 437 yds., the console positions the user for optimum visibility.

Doosan Plans to Produce Larger Model DD130 in 2023

machine functions are not used for a predetermined period, the auto idle feature idles the dozer engine to reduce fuel consumption. When the operator moves the controls, the dozer automatically returns to the previous throttle setting.

The auto shutdown feature saves fuel and helps lower warranty hours. When the feature is enabled, the engine shuts down after it has been idling for a specified period.

Default shutdown occurs after five minutes of idling but can be set for longer periods by the operator using the Smart Touch display.

Versatility

Doosan dozers come standard with piping for an optional ripper attachment. The ripper attachment features parallel linkage that helps maintain a constant angle to the ground regardless of the height. The attachment can quickly break up hard, rugged materials prior to grading, and it can be used to install erosion control. Also available as an attachment is a towing draw bar, allowing operators to use the Doosan dozer to tow other equipment on a job site.

Durability

One of the dozer’s key features is its undercarriage design. Doosan developed its

dozer undercarriage system to help lower the total cost of operation. The design includes both single- and dual-flange rollers for improved durability and long life.

Customers can choose from several track guards to enhance uptime protection. They include general-purpose and full guard options to fit the jobsite conditions. In addition, track shoe options are available to help distribute the load to the ground. Thinner tracks are used for rugged, rocky environments. A low-ground pressure option is available for sandy soil conditions.

Serviceability

An in-line precleaner helps improve filter life and is integrated with the air cleaner. It’s also more compact to fit in the smaller engine compartment. Self-cleaning and maintenance-free, the intake system can expel a variety of debris, including mud, snow, rain, leaves, sawdust and chaff.

Doosan designed its dozer undercarriage for convenience and cost-effective maintenance. Areas of the undercarriage that naturally experience greater wear and tear are easy to access. For example, a removable side panel provides access to an area to add grease to the undercarriage’s tension system.

Customers can order replacement parts

through their local Doosan dealer.

To help minimize fuel-related issues, Doosan offers a filter-type high-performance water separator, which captures moisture in the fuel and reduces impurities. Standard pre-filters and dual main filters achieve a high degree of purity that minimize fuel system failures. The fuel filter water separator and the main fuel filter can easily be reached by lifting a panel on the front of the dozer.

Common, everyday maintenance items can be accessed from ground level, including the following components:

• Electronic main control valve

• Diesel fill

• Diesel exhaust fluid fill

• Hydraulic oil fill

• Fuel filter

• Engine oil filter

• Air cleaner

• Battery

• Windshield wash tank

When necessary, owners can tilt the dozer cabin to reach critical components. Even with the cab tilted, the dozer can be started while the machine is being diagnosed or repaired.

Doosan DD100 dozers are designed with a unique hydraulically controlled cooling system and come standard with a reversible

fan. Operators can set the fan to automatically reverse at a predetermined time interval. The cooling system is in the rear of the machine instead of the front. This contributes to better visibility to the blade from the operator’s point of view.

Collapses Rarely Survivable; Cu. Yd. of Soil Equals 3,000 Lbs.

OSHAcalled on all employers engaged in trenching and excavation activities to act immediately “to ensure that required protections are fully in place every single time their employees step down into or work near a trench.”

Doug Parker, assistant secretary for occupational safety and health, said in a matter of seconds workers can be buried under thousands of pounds of soil and rocks in an unsafe trench.

He wants to see the increase in the number of workers needlessly dying and suffering serious injuries in trenching incidents stopped.

“Every one of these tragedies could have been prevented had employers complied with OSHA standards,” said Parker. “There simply is no excuse for ignoring safety requirements to prevent trench collapses and cave-ins.”

The agency reported that 22 deaths in the first half of 2022 surpasses the total of 15 in 2021.

In June, two workers aged 20 and 39 died in Jarrell, Texas, when the unprotected trench more than 20 ft. deep collapsed upon them as they worked.

OSHA noted that trench shields sat unused beside the excavation. This incident prompted the agency to announce the enhancements.

To stress the dangers of disregarding federal workplace safety requirements, OSHA enforcement staff will consider every available tool at the agency’s disposal, said the agency.

“These actions will place additional emphasis on how agency officials evaluate penalties, including criminal referrals for federal or state prosecution to hold employers and others accountable.”

OSHA compliance officers will perform trench inspections nationwide and may stop by and inspect any excavation site during their daily duties.

Industry Gives Its Blessing

The National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) marked this year’s Trench Safety Stand Down by reinforcing the idea that safety training is key to an employee’s daily activity.

The association believes safety training also is critical to a well-functioning utility construction job site.

“Time and time again, evidence shows that the key to significantly reducing the risks associated with our industry is employee training and reinforcement,” said Mike Flowers, NUCA’s director for safety, training and education.

This year, according to the association, 23,000 workers employed by 345 companies on 1,978 job sites participated in a stand

downtrainingeventtheweekofJune20to24.

The goal of the event is to provide those who work in and around trenches and excavations with information about current excavation requirements and safety procedures.

OSHA and the North American Excavation Shoring Association (NAXSA) joined forces to host the Colorado Trench Safety Summit in early October.

The free event included classroom training, roundtable discussions and live demonstrations.

A similar event took place in Southlake, Texas, with the North Texas NUCA chapter in September.

Early this year,ANSI announced approval of the updated A10.12 excavation safety standard, Safety Requirements for Excavation.

The standard details how to design an excavation plan, including responsibilities, training and duties, assessing underground utilities, water accumulation and stability of adjacent structures and protecting workers from falls, cave-ins and confined spaces.

It applies to all open excavations, including trenches, made in the earth’s surface that require worker and/or property protection.

Defining Trench Safety

NUCA reported that OSHA’s standard 1926.650, Subpart P on trenching and excavation requires protective systems for

trenches that are 5 ft. or deeper.

The federal agency warns that trench collapses are rarely survivable because a cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as 3,000 lbs.

“Trench hazards are well-known,” said OSHA, “yet far too many workers continue to be injured or killed during excavation work.”

The agency believes trench collapses, or cave-ins, are more likely than other excavation-related incidents to result in worker fatalities.

“It only takes seconds to become buried in thousands of pounds of soil.”

But trench hazards can be controlled when employers act responsibly, train employees and follow federal standards.

OSHA lists steps contractors can take to keep excavation work safe:

• Ensure there is a safe way to enter and exit the trench;

• Trenches must have cave-in protection — remember to Slope, Shore, Shield;

• Keep materials away from the edge of the trench;

• Look for standing water or other environmental hazards; and

• Never enter a trench unless it is properly inspected

The National Institute of Occupational SafetyandHealth(NIOSH)warnsthatworking in an unprotected trench is dangerous.

This year, the updated A10.12 excavation safety standard, Safety Requirements for Excavation, was approved. It details the design of an excavation plan and applies to all open excavations, including trenches. After 22 fatalities related to trenching were recorded, OSHA stepped up its excavation site inspection program.

Most Material From Blasting, Drilling Operations Becomes Fill for Project

Some 60 percent of the project contains solid rock, with the rest being a mix of clay and sandy soil. Blasting of the rock is going as expected. Humphreys noted, “Most of the material we remove will be used as fill for the new roadway.”

Workers have been vigilant with the blasting and drilling so as not to disrupt normal traffic. They also have been careful with the 400 acres of land they impact.

“Our people are trying to disturb no more than what is needed,” said Humphreys. “Trees that are being removed are being salvaged as timber, turned into firewood or mulch. We have also modified the design of the project so that we dislodge less land than we had originally estimated.”

Reducing the impact on the land means less effect on streams as well. Still, the project has made careful plans for streams and stormwater.

“Before constructing the road, we will be placing large diameter culverts for handling the existing streams,” said Humphreys. “Twenty-nine new stormwater management basins will handle normal rains and runoff. They help remove silt and earth from storm waters so it can return to the groundwater cleaner than it might if unfiltered.”

Unlike paving, the excavation can be done nearly year around. But weather does present issues in this mountainous terrain.

“We try to work on top of the mountain and at times are shut out because it’s foggy and icy,” said Humphreys. “Then we move our team to the other end of the job and it’s clear and sunny.”

Safety is a priority for the team. Full-time safety personal and traffic maintenance people are assigned to the site and a project safety committee monitors the work regularly.

The attention to safety is essential with the prevalence of large pieces of equipment rumbling around the project and active blasting operations. The finished project is hard to envision as project completion is still a long way off. Humphreys is confident though that the finished product will be satisfying for motorists and truckers.

At present, Branch is using a Cat 385 excavator, two Cat 374 excavators, Cat D8 and D10 dozers and Cat 45-ton articulated dump trucks for the earthwork, supported by a fleet of smaller pieces. Efforts are also under way to mobilize 100ton rigid frame trucks and an appropriately sized excavator for upcoming earthwork.

Shannon Valentine of the VDOT at project inception, agreed about the significance of the project.

“Every year thousands of commuters, travelers and truckers take Route 58 as they travel along our Commonwealth’s southern border. The project represents a continuation of a multi-decade investment in the people and communities of rural and southwest Virginia.”

Dealer Emphasizes Trench Safety; Warns of High Fatality Rate

The walls can collapse suddenly and without warning. When this happens, workers do not have time to move out of the way.

“A small amount of dirt may not seem dangerous, but can weigh more than 3,000 pounds — the weight of a compact car,” said the organization. “This small amount of dirt is enough to fatally crush and suffocate workers.”

Like OSHA, safety experts at NIOSH warn that “workers should never enter a trench that does not have a protective system in place.”

The protective system should be designed and installed by a competent person, someone who can identify hazards and is authorized to correct them.

Competent person training is available from many sources, noted NIOSH, including insurance companies, trade associations, labor unions and equipment manufacturers.

The best way to prevent trench collapse and trenching fatalities is to use other methods, when possible, said NIOSH.

Some options include directional boring, relining the pipe, pipe ramming and utility tunneling and pipe jacking.

Robots can be used on construction sites to transport, line and join large pipes to protect workers from serious injuries.

Robots may also reduce the need for pipe layers and other helpers to work at the bottom of the trench, according to the organization.

Trenches must be inspected by a knowledgeable person, be free of standing water and atmospheric hazards and have a safe means of entering and exiting prior to allowing a worker to enter.

“OSHA stands ready to assist any employer who needs help to comply with our trenching and excavation requirements,” Assistant Secretary Parker added. “We will conduct outreach programs in all of our 10 regions to help ensure any employer who wants assistance gets it. The stakes are too important.”

In fact, OSHA’s On-Site Consultation Program for small- and medium-sized businesses will help address trench-related illnesses and injuries in workplaces.

The agency also urges workers to contact their local OSHA or state plan office if their employer requires working in or beside trenches that are not sloped, shored or shielded, and are 5 or more feet deep.

Additional Advice

Caterpillar dealer Blanchard Machinery warns that the fatality rate for excavating is 112 percent higher than general construction.

“Trenching is a dangerous job,” said the

Prior to allowing a worker to enter, trenches must be inspected by a knowledgeable person, free of standing water and hazards and have a safe means of entering and exiting.

West Columbia, S.C.-based, company. “But you can protect yourself and your team from injury with the right precautions. Anticipate the risks before they become hazards and be proactive with these trench safety tips.”

• Understand proper trenching practices

Blanchard reiterates that the site manager should implement trenching techniques based on soil, trench dimensions and other site-specific factors.

“Never work in a trench without supporting the sides with a trench box, shoring, or combination of sloping and benching methods,” said Blanchard.

• Follow site-specific trenching safety guidelines

Every work site is different, noted the company.

“Account for environmental and atmospheric conditions, soil type, trench dimensions and the work you’re doing in creating site-specific safety guidelines.”

According to Blanchard, these rules should be safety standards across all trench settings. Never enter a trench with standing

water or accumulating water without taking proper precautions to drain and prevent more flow. Workers should not work underneath suspended loads handled by heavy machinery. All trenches require safe and separate entry and exit points.

Minimize the chance of falling debris and struck-by injuries by keeping materials and equipment at least 2 ft. away from the trench edge and using retaining devices as needed.

Always stay aware of your surroundings and implement visual and audible warning systems like signs and alarms to know when equipment is in use or nearby.

• Test and inspect trenches regularly

Trenches must be inspected before work begins each day to check for hazardous fumes, oxygen levels, water accumulation and environmental changes.

The inspector should reinspect trenches after environmental changes and natural events, like nearby blasting work or heavy rain.

• Know the soil, environment

Soil type and quality are some of the most significant factors to consider when design-

ing a trench.

Always conduct utility line tests before trenching. Mark gas, electrical, water and other lines with correct signage and barriers before operating any equipment.

“Failure to do so could result in injury and costly damage or fees,” warns Blanchard.

Plus, a competent person should conduct atmospheric testing in all trenches 4 ft. or deeper to ensure proper oxygen levels. Also, sites should have emergency rescue equipment available at all times, according to the Cat dealer.

• Use a trench box — but don’t rely on it

Trench boxes are in place to protect workers in the event of a cave-in and cannot always prevent the cave-in itself.

Proper barrier placement should include shoring and worker barriers with enough force to be greater than the force coming from the trench walls.

Avoid using trench boxes for greater depths than the manufacturer has rated them for and never work inside a damaged barrier.

$115MDassaultFalconJetFacilityComingtoMelbourne,Fla.

Dassault Falcon Jet has revealed plans to create 400 new jobs and build a $115 million aviation maintenance facility off Apollo Boulevard at Melbourne Orlando International Airport on Florida’s Space Coast.

The announcement was made Oct. 17 during the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention & Exhibition in Orlando.

Florida Today later reported that the company, a subsidiary of Dassault Aviation, based in France, is expected to build on 46 previously undeveloped acres just north of Sheltair Aviation’s fixed-base operation at the airport, stretching northward near Embraer’s delivery center.

The jobs at the business jet facility will boast average salaries of $86,120, said Keely Leggett, an airport spokesperson.

The project had previously been labeled “Project Vista,” a secretive code name assigned by the Economic Development Commission (EDC) of Florida’s Space Coast and Gov. Ron DeSantis’office.

“Intended to serve customers across North and South America and beyond, the 175,000-sq.-ft. complex will accommodate all current Falcon models and will be capable of performing major maintenance and modifications on up to 18 Falcon [jets] simultaneously,” the EDC of Florida’s Space Coast explained in a press release.

The statement also noted, “Construction in Melbourne is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2023 and opening is set for late 2024.”

In addition, the Dassault Falcon complex will include a 54,000-sq.-ft. paint shop.

Dassault Falcon’s planes “are the most advanced business jets in the world — designed and built in France and completed in Little Rock,Ark.,” per the company’s Twitter page.

“This new factory service center will considerably grow our presence in the U.S., positioning us to keep up with demand for state-of-the-art maintenance services as the Falcon fleet grows and as new models such as the Falcon 10X and the extra widebody Falcon 6X enter service,” explained Dassault Aviation Chairman and CEO Eric Trappier in the EDC news release.

Airport Receives Grant to Build Infrastructure

The Melbourne City Council unanimously approved a resolution Oct. 11 adjusting the airport budget to accept a $6.6 million Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) grant to build infrastructure for Project Vista at the Apollo Boulevard parcel.

The FDOT award will finance an environmental assessment, land-clearing, construction of an apron, utility extensions, stormwater drainage, anApollo Boulevard median cut and security equipment, Florida Today learned.

“The city of Melbourne welcomes Dassault Aviation to our community, and we are pleased with their decision to invest over $100 million within Melbourne’s aerospace industry cluster at [the airport],” Mayor Paul Alfrey said in the EDC statement.

Florida Today noted that Space Florida and CareerSource Brevard also worked behind the scenes to secure the Dassault Falcon expansion in Melbourne.

“We have made it our priority to invest in our workforce to attract the world’s top companies to Florida,” DeSantis said in the news release. “Today’s announcement from Dassault Falcon Jet Corp. shows how these investments are paying dividends. This new facility will bring high-paying jobs to Melbourne and lead to strong economic growth throughout central Florida.”

Airport Approves 30-Year Lease for Dassault Shop

The Melbourne Airport Authority unanimously approved a brief list of Project Vista votes on Sept. 28:

•A30-year ground lease, plus two 10-year options. The base rent for the Dassault Falcon Jet shop facility is $635,554 per year, or $52,963 per month. Airport officials expect the lease agreement — which incorporates a schedule of early incentives and subsequent rate increases — to generate $14.9 million during the three-decade lease term, plus consumer-price-index increases.

• A purchase order up to $129,976 to design a new multi-tenant apron at the airport’s Taxiway H and Taxiway S.

• A second purchase order up to $162,680 to realign and reconstruct Taxiway H.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dassault Falcon Jet to our world-class family of tenants here at the Melbourne Orlando International Airport,” said Greg Donovan, the Melbourne airport’s executive director. “We believe this is the perfect home for Dassault Aviation.

“The fact that another titan of the aerospace industry has chosen to move operations to the Space Coast is a great credit to our community and the teams who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this deal to fruition,” he added.

Dassault Aviation — Pioneer in Aerospace Design

Dassault Aviation is a leading aerospace company with a presence in more than 90 countries across six continents. The company designs and builds its family of Falcon business jets as well as the Rafale fighter jet. It employs a workforce of over 12,000 people and has production facilities in both France and the United States, along with a worldwide service network.

Since the rollout of the first Falcon 20 in 1963, over 2,650 Falcons have been delivered. The tri-jet and twin-engine lines offer outstanding efficiency and comfort, with ranges from 3,500 nautical miles to 7,500 nautical miles. They include the flagship Falcon 10X, the pioneering Falcon 7X and 8X, the widebody Falcon 6X, and the versatile Falcon 900LX, 2000LXS.

Durante Equipment Joins LiuGong NorthAmerica Dealer Lineup

LiuGong NorthAmerica has added another Florida-based dealer to its lineup, in the form of Hollywood, Fla.-based Durante Equipment.

Durante Equipment is a general rent equipment operations company — it includes both construction equipment and material handling products — and boasts a 30-year track record of experience led by Dealer Principal/President John Durante and GM/Sales Manager David D’Attilo.

The Hollywood location allows Durante to serve material handling and earthmoving customers in Miami-Dade, Broward and

Palm Beach counties.

Durante’s family and dealership background is based in New York. He added the Florida location roughly 2 ½ years ago.

The availability of material handling inventory is key to the partnership, D’Attilo said. He also noted a strong customer base within material handling and worked with the LiuGong NorthAmerica team to become the dealer for sales as well as rentals.

D’Attilo described the importance of culture within Durante Equipment with its three core tenets: driven to deliver, old school values and a passion to be the best.

“I like to say that we are constantly building a culture,” D’Attilo said. “We are very selective on who to keep and put into our team because we want to have people here for the long haul.”

Jared Ward, LiuGong North America director of material handling, welcomed the Durante Equipment family into the fold.

“Durante Equipment has a strong pedigree in rentals and material handling, and we are thrilled to welcome them to our LiuGong dealer lineup,” Ward said.

“Ensuring they have the products and availability they need is a major part of our

mission and program.”

Michel Marchand, LiuGong North America vice president of sales, noted the importance of Durante to LiuGong’s construction equipment dealer network.

“Florida is booming with projects requiring heavy equipment,” Marchand said. “As we continue to add great partners to our dealer network, we are confident Durante Equipment will be up to the task of servicing earthmoving customers in the area.”

Doosan Officials Open Smart X-Care Machine Monitoring Center in Georgia

Telematics provides dozers, excavators and other primary construction machines with onboard communication services and applications that communicate with one another via GPS receivers and other devices. Vehicle tracking, the most common application, works by combining a GPS system with onboard diagnostics, typically to map the exact location of a machine and the speed at which it is moving.

Although many people in the construction workforce have never known a world without smart phones or touch screens, Arezina acknowledged Doosan must work to make it easier for older equipment owners and operators to embrace telematics and understand what the technology can do for them.

“The way we mitigate that is through training — starting small with basic functions and improving the user interface and user experience designs of DoosanCONNECT,” he said.

“That is why I work directly with Korea to suggest how to make it more approachable.”

Additionally, Arezina said, “The best-selling points are showing them the financial benefits of telematics. For example, let them see how DoosanCONNECT observes and uses data that can help them keep their machines longer and, therefore, enables them to make more money with their equipment. Plus, reveal to them how DoosanCONNECT can aid them in spending less money on services, have less down time, and more operating hours.”

Dealers Get Monthly Report On Data Results

To aid in doing that, the Smart X-Care MMC began a pilot program in September called Dealer Principal Report, which it sends to a select group of Doosan dealers, according to Arezina.

The report is designed to, among other things, capture missed revenue due to not addressing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), or not heeding an alert about a machine being overdue for service. The monthly dispatch also projects potential revenues generated at a dealership for the next 30 days if all the upcoming machines are correctly serviced.

Even owners and operators that are comfortable with telematics likely must be shown that Doosan’s Smart X-Care service can bring value-added technology to their business, Arezina conceded.

“Again, I think to do that we must show them the monetary value behind it and the trends created via the monthly reports that we send,” he said. “Hopefully, they will be able to see the difference between the revenue missed to potential revenue.”

Arezina added that those trends will be very telling if dealers are using the data available and trying to anticipate what is happening with their machines.

“You can even predict the functional areas in which your staff needs more training,” he said. “If, for example, I was a dealer and saw a trend where all the transmission related

DTCs were not resolved within 48 hours, and all the others were fine and closing within 24 hours, that could be telling me my dealership needs more training in transmission related issues.”

Online, In-Person Dealer Training Available

Arezina and his staff also have developed a multi-faceted approach to training dealership personnel, including technicians and salespeople, in understanding the Smart X-Care monitoring service. The how-to series can be downloaded from Doosan’s dealership page online, allowing dealer employees the opportunity to learn the basic functions of telematics and how to perform them, he said.

“For example, one [part of the series] is on how to create a new customer in DoosanCONNECT, while another is

MISSISSIPPI

CAROLINAS

about finding a user in DoosanCONNECT,” he said. “We have already started rolling out some of the series and are continuing to do so.”

Arezina added that another approach he takes is each time a group of dealers come to Doosan for service training, he tries to schedule a telematics-dedicated session with them for 30 minutes to an hour. Also, he reaches out to individual dealers through DoosanCONNECT to set up personalized training with their telematics employees.

“As we all know, workforce turnover is always a problem,” he said. “You may train everyone at a specific dealer on telematics and then a year down the line, the company may have a completely new staff. We tackle that by having continuous training.”

Arezina wants to advance the Smart X-Care service by ensuring that at every one of Doosan’s dealerships, there should be at least one person that knows him, knows his telematics team or has a personal connection with them so the dealers feel that they can reach out to the monitoring center at any time.

“I always like to say that telematics is not the future; rather telematics is present in time,” he said. “Everyone is using telematics and the data available to us. Now, it is all about what do we do with data. How do we direct it to where we can take the next step in this operation?”  CEG

Ritchie Bros. Looks at Oil, Gas Support Equip. Sales in Report

With its September Market Trends Report, Ritchie Bros. takes a deep dive into sales of oil and gas support equipment over the past 20 months (Jan. 2021 toAug. 2022), including detailed charts breaking down volume, median asset age, and pricing for boom, vacuum, and bed trucks, as well as winch tractors, tanker trailers, frac tanks and more.

Unlike many of the other sectors the company operates in, volumes for oil and gas equipment sales have been steady in 2022. Pricing, however, is a different story, as the volumes sold per quarter fluctuate greatly and the variance in equipment specifications make it difficult to summarize pricing trends. For example, the volume of oil and gas assets sold in Q2 in Canada eclipses volumes of Q1 and Q3 combined, in most cases.

“We have decades of experience helping companies in oil and gas buy and sell equipment for their businesses and we want to continue to grow in this sector,” said Doug Olive, senior vice president (pricing), Ritchie Bros.

“Traditionally Alberta and Texas have

been our biggest markets and it’s no coincidence that these are also hotbeds for the oil and gas sector. With our September Market Trends Report we drill down into the details so you can learn more about what’s going on in the industry.”

Individual Industry Indexes

While all indexes show increased pricing over the same time last year, month over month changes are declining since peak pricing earlier this year.

In the United States, Ritchie Bros.’ mixadjusted price indexes for the three months ending Aug. 31, 2022, show truck tractor prices are currently leading the pack, up approximately 18 percent compared to the same time period last year, but down 11 percent compared to the three months ending December 2021. Meanwhile, large and medium earthmoving prices are currently up 9 percent and 8 percent respectively compared to the same time period last year, however that is down 1 percent and 2 percent compared the three months ending December 2021.
