hen the calendar turns to October, I think of the changing weather, new collections at every store, and, of course, our much-anticipated Creative 30 Powerlist. So, when we first started working on the powerlist for design a few years ago, we were thinking about how we would position this feature, what kind of reaction we would get, and whether we would be able to do this year after year. It turned out to be a landmark feature for our magazine, giving us a distinct recognition in addition to saluting the year's top designers and architects. So, once again, we celebrate the true gems of this region who are reshaping the landscape beyond words and our dreams. A must-read! Our October cover story is unique in that it demonstrates how two people who are not only life partners, but also partners at work are changing the dynamics of the industry. Villeroy & Boch acquires Ideal Standard

Regional strengths, sales channels and product ranges interweave The merger will create a powerful combination of complementary established brand and sales strategies. Villeroy & Boch has a strong geographical basis in Central and Northern Europe as well as Asia, while Ideal Standard enjoys an excellent reputation with its brand portfolio in the UK, Italy and the Middle East / North Africa region in particular. While Villeroy & Boch’s sales strategy

focuses primarily on a high-end private customer base, Ideal Standard possesses particular expertise in the project business, including for the public sector, the healthcare sector and for developers of large residential, hotel and commercial properties. In addition, alongside a broad range of ceramic bathroom ware and other products, Ideal Standard comes with an established fittings business, which generated more than a third of its revenue last financial year. Jan Peter Tewes, Ideal Standard CEO, says “Villeroy & Boch and Ideal Standard complement each other, in terms of products but also in terms of brands, and will gain mutual benefit from their different sales channels. Both companies will play a key role in charting the future course of the industry. We look forward to this development!” In addition to the strategic fit, Frank Göring points to the cultural similarities between Villeroy & Boch and Ideal Standard: “We are characterised by strong brands

steeped in tradition and share similar values. These include a pronounced service orientation, a flair for good design and a constant striving for innovation. We are delighted that the employees of Ideal Standard will become part of our global organisation after the closing of the transaction. Our clients will benefit from this combined expertise and an expanded offering.” New expertise opens up prospects for growth With this merger, Villeroy & Boch is not only elevating its bathrooms business to a new level in terms of volume, but is also gaining access to significant additional growth potential. Ideal Standard’s manufacturing base in the fittings business, expertise in the project business and strong market positions in the UK, MENA and Italy will grant Villeroy & Boch improved market penetration and coverage of specific regions and product segments. These long-standing brands are now combining their strengths.

CB2 launches curated capsule collection

C

B2, operated by Majid Al Futtaim Lifestyle, has partnered with creatives across the design spectrum – from fashion designers to rockstars – to bring unique capsule collections to the Middle East. Its latest campaign, ‘Designed to Make a Statement’,

design-middleeast.com

aims to raise awareness on imaginative, established and emerging voices in design. CB2’s ever-evolving assortment of home furnishings includes covetable collaborations tailored for those seeking a creative edge and high-end design aesthetic. Having carefully honed its relationships with leading global studios to create unique pieces for seasonal collections, along with exclusive edits from modern icons such as Lenny Kravitz and Gwyneth Paltrow, the brand selects its partners based on a shared interest in form, craft and authenticity. Each one is known for an unwavering point of view – whether that’s Paul McCobb’s mid-century modern simplicity, or Kara Mann’s signature subversion of contrasting styles. Sara Khodja, Senior Director of Design, Development and Furniture at CB2, said, “CB2 collaborates with artists, designers and manufacturers across the world to curate and create exclusive products in every category. Our collections are authentic and elevated, using a foundation of exceptional craftsmanship with diverse perspectives. In this way, we can explore several creative possibilities as part of a larger goal to frame CB2 as a unique entity in the home landscape.” CB2 is committed not only to modern trends, but legacy luxury, having recently reissued the celebrated works of Italian architect and designer, Gianfranco Frattini. Guided by his original 1950s sketches and timeless

standards, CB2 has lovingly recreated original vintage pieces for a new era – with the same enduring high quality. For more dimension inside the home, the Lawson Fenning capsule collection seamlessly blends natural elements and clean, modern forms. This same effortless originality is a signature of Ross Cassidy, the LAbased interior and furniture designer. His luxe collection of classic silhouettes and refined materials transcends trends, just as Brett Beldock’s use of marble and oak speaks to a grounded, yet cultivated approach. Following years of Scandi minimalism and monochromatic palettes, vibrant, bold and distinctive designs are taking centre stage in 2023. No one embodies this aesthetic quite like Azeeza – whose energising outdoor capsule has landed at CB2 in time for the cooler months. Emerald and cobalt blues have been mixed with metallics to add the perfect pop of lasting, fade-resistant colour to any garden or balcony. As well as constantly sourcing new talent and exploring new styles, CB2 remains true to its history through long term partnerships. One of these being Mermelada Estudio – an example of the brand’s longest-running design relationships – which brings a touch of Mediterranean magic and sophistication with sumptuous velvet chairs, leather sofas and minimalist shapes.

Makma Art Gallery opens a contemporary space for everlasting glass art

Crafted from 100% natural and long-lasting materials, glass and crystal are known for their durability and timelessness. Our collection is as diverse as the history of glass and crystal manufacturing that spans the centuries. Makma’s exhibitions shine a spotlight on European master craftsmen who reinterpreted traditional Islamic glass art, bridging the gap between the past and present. We aspire to transform Makma Art Gallery into a hub for artistic and cultural exchange that blurs the lines between tradition and modernity, to connect us all through a shared identity.” At Makma Art Gallery, one-of-a-kind pieces from Europe’s, and particularly Bohemia’s, leading glass and crystal houses are presented through a fresh and modern lens. Their exceptional design, proportions and meticulously executed gilding can transform contemporary homes into spaces of effortless luxury and refinement. The gallery’s inaugural collection ‘The Mystical Art of Glass’ displays a curated selection of Mosque lamps and beautifully crafted pieces by French glassmaker Philippe-Joseph Brocard, along with pieces by Josef and Ludwig Lobmeyr, founders of renowned Viennese glass company J. & L. Lobmeyr. Part of a new wave of 19th century glass makers, Brocard and the Lobmeyrs recaptured ancient methods to create outstanding glass pieces, inspired by Islamic decorative arts. Their vivid interpretation of ancient Persian and Ottoman glass is known as the ‘Mamluk Revival’. On display until the end of December 2023, ‘The Mystical Art of Glass’ will be part of a series of exhibitions through which Makma Art Gallery presents a broad view of Islamic-inspired art and its global influences. The gallery collections will highlight the synergies between East and West, bringing rare artisanal glass art and Bohemia crystal, known for its stunning palette of colours, to the region.

Cultural Sensitivity in

DESIGN MIDDLE EAST

OCTOBER 2023

Design Nourhan Wahdan

CO-FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF PEW. DESIGN BUREAU, EXPLAINS THE NECESSITY OF CREATING LONG-LASTING INFLUENCE IN THE MIDDLE OF TRENDS.

A

esthetics have a lot of power in the ever-changing world of design. However, aesthetic trends come and go quickly, leaving behind designs that quickly become obsolete. This paradox arises from the transitory nature of trends, which may captivate momentarily but often lack enduring influence. This highlights an important point: when design is exclusively focused on looks, it might lack depth, eventually failing to leave a significant, long-lasting impression on people. This gives rise to an aesthetic paradox because while these designs may be initially visually appealing, they frequently lack a deeper or enduring significance for those who engage with them.

design-middleeast.com

13

T

minds of those they seek to engage. In an era where design functions as a universal language, cultural sensitivity is not just an add-on—it's a fundamental aspect of design literacy. It's the tool that transforms designs from being momentary trends to timeless pieces that endure. This transformation ensures that designs don't just catch the eye but also touch the heart, fostering lasting connections and leaving a profound impact. As renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy put it, "Most Advanced yet Acceptable" (MAYA) is the key. To sell a new idea, you must give it some familiarity, and to sell a familiar idea, it needs to be surprising in some way. A prime example is Airbnb, initially dubbed "the eBay for homes," or more recently, Adobe Firefly being referred to as "ChatGPT but for images." This demonstrates that an understanding of the market and the balance between familiarity and innovation is essential for design to truly resonate with audiences. By recognising the symbiotic relationship between cultural relevance and aesthetics, designers can transcend the limitations of trends and craft designs that speak a universal language. Cultural sensitivity provides a road to authenticity, where designs resonate deeply with varied audiences and transcend time. It's a journey that elevates design from a merely visual experience to a profound and meaningful dialogue between designers and the world they wish to influence.

approach, aligning SOKNA with the spiritual aspect of the funeral experience and their philosophy: "We take care of the body, and you take care of the mind/spirit." This approach allows people the time and space to grieve and find closure without being overwhelmed by logistical details such as booking funerals, opening crypts, or arranging transportation for family members, thus reshaping the narrative around funeral experiences in the region. The solution to this problem is to incorporate cultural sensitivity into the core of design approach. Designers with a strong sense of cultural significance can create graphics that transcend passing trends and instead develop genuine connections. This entails going beyond surface aesthetics and beginning on a cultural discovery adventure. In practice, this means designers should actively consider the cultural context in which their designs will be experienced. They can do this by studying the significance of colours in various cultures, understanding the emotional impact of symbols, and deciphering the layers of meaning within cultural expressions. By weaving these cultural insights into their design process, designers can create meaningful and impactful designs that resonate with diverse audiences. This approach not only adds depth to their work but also ensures that the visual language they use speaks directly to the hearts and

DESIGN MIDDLE EAST

he diversity of our interconnected world necessitates a shift in design philosophy. Each visual element carries cultural baggage, from the colors we choose to the symbols we employ. Ignoring these nuances can result in designs that misinterpret or overlook the emotions, values, and beliefs of various audiences. In today's global society, the need for cultural understanding is not a mere luxury—it's a requirement for effective communication. Designers must recognise that resonating deeply with diverse audiences goes beyond visual appeal; it requires an understanding of the cultural tapestry that shapes their perceptions. For instance, in the Middle East, funerals are traditionally associated with the colour black, symbolising mourning and loss. However, when Ahmed Gaballah, CEO of SOKNA, approached us, he sought to challenge this convention. He didn't want his audience to perceive funerals as depressing or synonymous with death itself. In this region, while black may dominate funeral attire, religious and cultural aspects of spirituality often incorporate lighter colors like white, light blues, and beige. Recognising this, we took a holistic

ow has the year been so far in terms of business and performance for the Universal Trading Company?

Universal Trading has had an exceptionally strong year. Particularly in our projects business, where we have secured prestigious projects and will install over 2,700 project kitchens with Nolte Küchen this year alone. We have also installed over 5000 appliances for projects as well with premium brands AEG, Ignis and TurboAir. Beyond our sales performance, we are also proud of the efforts we’ve put in to expand our business over the last few years through strategic marketing. This year, we saw the benefits of all those efforts. Our brand recognition on social platforms has grown exponentially. We have enjoyed recognition from media partners and from the engagement our brand ambassadors have brought us. Can you tell us about some of your recent high-profile projects?

We continue to work with some of the UAE’s best developers. Last year we secured one of our most prestigious projects to date, the Harmony Villas at design-middleeast.com

Nolte Küchen classic style kitchen design, Abu Dhabi Showroom.

Ziad believes that their superior product quality, competitive price, and superior service and installation put them ahead of the competition. Their premium kitchen and home appliance brands are produced in Europe to strict sustainability and production standards.

Tilal Al Ghaf by Majid Al Futtaim. Installation for that project began this year. This year we will complete installation for over 100 kitchens at the Qaryat Al Hidd Development at Saadiyat Island and over 1,100 kitchens with Meydan for two different developments. One of those developments is the Canal Front Residences overlooking the beautiful Dubai Water Canal. It is poised to be a highly-sought after community. Together with Nolte Küchen, we’ve created amazing designs for each of these projects. When working with developers, how do you support them?

We support developers with these large projects from the conception stage all the way through to installation. We don’t just sell kitchens, wardrobes and vanities in bulk, we work together with developers and designers taking on a consultant role helping them select the perfect designs, storage solutions, finishes and product

ranges to make special and perfect selections. From our offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we have a team of 120 people who work collectively to make large projects happen and work with our in-house designers to also make each retail customer's experience seamless. What are some emerging trends in the industry?

We have been fortunate to work with great designers both in our own showrooms and for development projects. This has given us a front seat to what designers are looking for and what is enticing our retail customers. Open floor plan designs, neutral tones and kitchens with multi-functional elements are continued trends. However, this year we’ve also seen a lot more color be incorporated into home design spaces than in the last few years. Colors like green, gold and red are used for partial designs or accent pieces in a fresh new way that brightens up the home and creates character. >>> design-middleeast.com

Nolte Küchen designed kitchens at Harmony Villas at Tilal al Ghaf.

Can you tell us more about your brand ambassador Nisrine Moghraby, author and founder of Harfnoon Design Studio? How has your partnership engaged the online audience?

We know that influencers and brand ambassadors are an important factor in helping us increase our brand recognition and connecting us to bigger audiences.

Working with Nisrine has been the perfect partnership because as a designer, she knows exactly how to create beautiful spaces. As an influencer and media personality, she knows her audience and understands how to connect with them in a meaningful way, easily integrating our brand into her content. It’s been such a great journey to watch her design her own Nolte kitchen. It really gives the audience an in-depth look into the full process from design to installation. When we are able to convert those audience members into customers, they come into our showrooms knowing what to expect and also having some design tips on hand from the content Nisrine has produced. It really has been a great partnership for us. NISRINE MOGHRABY: “Working with Universal Trading has been a fun partnership for me. We have worked together to create great digital content and engaging events that really connect with our audiences in a new way. When I started creating the layout for my own kitchen, the designers in the showroom were incredibly helpful and I was able to bring to life my ideas with all the elements Nolte Küchen has to offer. Now that my kitchen is finished, it really is a dream space that my family and I will be able to create memories together for years to come.”

Bruno was born in New York City as a Frenchman; after attending Lycée Français de New York and earning a US bachelor's degree in sociology, he continued to pursue his interest. His specialisation was discovered after four years of research at NYSID. Bruno was the first recipient of the B.F. A. Travel Prize, which allowed him to travel the world, stopping in 15 countries and over 22 cities, an experience that strongly inspired his design flare. After working as a chief designer at a major New York firm for several years, his path led him back to Dubai in 2008, where he continues to develop his craft at 'studio bruno guelaff' within the 'BG Group'.

Bruno has spent the last 15 years as the Design Director of the award-winning boutique firm'studio bruno guelaff'. He has been heavily involved in all parts of each project, including architecPARTNER & DESIGN PRINCIPAL ture, master planning, interior design, landscape design, furniture U+A design, and branding. Bruno, as a multi-discipline doyen, ensures that all design elements conclude in a comprehensive fluid personalised project. Over the years, Bruno felt there was something missing in the equation of the typical project process from conception to realisation. Within the construction process there was a lack of fluidity of work ownership which goes into play when a multitude of consultants are involved. The concept of master of all trades needed to be extended to the execution of a project and not only the conceptualisation. BG Villas was created organically when Bruno Guélaff and Khalid Kaluti's professional paths crossed in Dubai some years ago. Both Bruno and Khalid quickly realised after being each other’s clients that combining their award-winning specialties could lead to something quite unique. The goal was to establish a transparent and honest Design + Build construction company that could provide not only the highest quality construction services for residential villas, including pools and landscaping, but also award-winning design services to provide its clients with an unparalleled experience and end product. Bruno speaks with passion about the process of design: “It is my privilege to be able to design a true home for each of our patrons, understand their cultural backgrounds, understand the way they interact with their family members, the way they interact with food, the way they interact with media and then translate that onto paper into a fluid personalised architectural layout representing the way they experience the world around them.” With a multitude of luxury Design + Build projects in full construction spread all around the Dubai area from Dubai Hills to Pearl Jumeirah the next big step in the BG adventure was branded boutique developments. Bruno anticipates the future unique development projects that BG is spearheading with eagerness and excitement, as he and his colleagues continue their drive to break limits and create new standards for Design + Build.

opment this year, with a total of 436 floors for highly diversified local real-estate company, GJ Real Estate. It introduced a global and contemporary appeal into its brand to differentiate it from the typical residential towers of Ajman. Several abandoned homes on the Palm Jumeirah and Emirates Hills have also been successfully converted into revenue-generating properties by Design Matter. Unfortunately, these villas were plagued by several design flaws, rendering them unusable for several years. Design Matter repositioned the properties in order to appeal to the lively Dubai crowd.

Owner & Lead Creative Director/ /NIKKI BISIKER INTERIOR DESIGN

N

ikki Bisiker is the owner and lead creative director of Nikki Bisiker Interior Design. Nikki's background is self-taught through passion, flair, and hands-on expertise gained over 30 years.. Nikki's grandparents on her father's side collected antiques, vintage gowns, gloves, hats, and fashions. And it was at this point that she became interested in materials, textures, and fabrics such as glassware, gorgeous wood finishes, silverware, silks, chiffons, satins, and various lighting techniques. Nikki didn't realise how her gorgeous, one-of-a-kind surroundings would affect her until much later. Her early schooling was strong in languages and business studies, which led her to a career in the restaurant and hotel industry. She was able to merge her passions for design, business, and people interaction in stunning luxury settings. She developed and operated a 160-seat restaurant and cocktail bar in Lymington on the British south coast, then a 45room sporting hotel in the Welsh hills and a luxury barn conversion in Shropshire. It was the 1980s, and she was just out of her 20s! Exposure to foreign languages also created a fascination in cultures and traditions far and wide. Whilst her stable upbringing in a happy, close-knit family contributed to her sense of how a calm, ordered and structured household can powerfully influence design concepts

design-middleeast.com

Both these forces– travel and the psychology of the home – combined later to shape her unique design philosophy around the artistry and psychology of the home. In the 1990’s her business thrived with private commission to design luxury homes in Lyon France and super-yachts in Monaco. A much-loved Harley-Davidson motor-bike being one of her preferred modes of transport to take her from client to client! In 2004, she brought her work together under the brand name Nikki B Signature Interiors. And moved the business to Dubai where property development was booming. She was tasked with renovating an antique farmhouse in Al Ain, an interior oasis city near the border with

Oman. She then developed luxurious mansions in Dubai. Design projects took her all over the Middle East as well as back to Europe and Russia. The company turned into an LLC the following year and started to create a strong team. With a kaleidoscopic career that has taken around the world across four decades she has a work ethos that knows no boundaries. And the secret to her resilience: “Patience, a sense of humour, co-ordination, time and project management and empathy with the client. A genuine passion for the creative arts, with a strong team fostering a work environment that sees long standing employees enjoying the environment and work process,” she says.

rand creative worked its magic once again on its most recent project, Minimalist, which inaugurated its main retail store in Dubai's City Centre Mirdif. In August 2023, Minimalist, a brainchild of Ahmad Yousuf, emerged as a demure luxury fragrance and accessories destination, redirecting the design industry with its unwavering commitment to the beauty of simplicity. This experiential concept resonated with the idea that genuine beauty lies in the most unassuming colours, curves, and textures, aiming to evoke positive emotions by drawing inspiration from the natural world.

Clean lines, neutral hues, and softly curved edges established the minimalist design approach, with touches of gold expressing happiness and the warm warmth of a sunset.

Minimalist Dubai was built on the essence of the sun's splendour, the boundless reflections of the ocean, and the organic curves of an unending horizon. Premium experiences were created here by leaving ordinary distractions at the door, ushering in a new era of shopping that embraced the art of minimalism. Design concept The goal of Minimalist was to create a shopping destination that honoured the timeless attraction of well-designed timepieces, jewellery, leather goods, and fragrances while establishing itself as a premium yet approachable brand. The challenge was to develop a concept that stood out in experience and brand positioning, offering mood-enhancing products in a space that was timeless, memorable, Instagram-worthy, and multi-sensory—a place that radiated happiness and positivity.

Approach The strategy approach taken by Brand Creative for Minimalist's store design revolved around creating pleasant feelings by borrowing inspiration from nature, including the ocean, sunlight, and organic land curves. The minimalist design style was defined by clean lines, neutral hues, and softly curved edges, with touches of gold representing happiness and the warm warmth of a sunset. Final execution The store's bright, open, floor-to-ceiling glass entrance entices the passersby with its play of light and luxury, drawing them into a world of opulence. Inside, guests are welcomed by an island display featuring bespoke jewellery selections, complimented by blue suede seats held up by bronze legs. Above the island, floating pearl-inspired lights add a whimsical element to the ambiance of the space. We created symmetry with reflective surfaces >>> design-middleeast.com

that soothe the beholder's eyes. The store's design engages the senses by enabling guests to immerse themselves in the Minimalist world through sight and scent, with the aroma of Arabic coffee and seductive perfumes floating through the air. Minimalist's mission was to design products that celebrated simplicity and minimalism, focussing on what truly mattered in life. The final launch marked a refined shift in the retail luxury sector. The devotion of the design to simplicity, quality, and positive experiences is redefining luxury and making it more accessible to individuals who appreciate the beauty in simplicity. Collaboration in the development of this design culminated in the formation of a philosophy and dedication to customer delight, which resulted in Minimalist introducing a new elegance in retail luxury.
