AECOM Selected As PMC And Engineer For The Avenues Phase II

AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, today announced it has been appointed by Shomoul Holding Company as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) and engineer for Phase II of The Avenues – Riyadh, a transformative mixed-use development in North Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia, following the successful delivery of The Avenues Phase I. The Avenues aims to be one of the most prominent commercial and investment destinations in the Middle East, elevating Saudi Arabia’s position as a regional hub for business, innovation, and lifestyle.

“We are honored that Shomoul Holding Company has entrusted us to extend our key role on The Avenues – Riyadh,” said Hamed Zaghw, chief executive of AECOM’s Middle East and Africa region. “This award is a testament to the transformational outcomes we are delivering for our clients across the Kingdom, and we are excited to shape a development that aligns with Vision 2030 and sets a new benchmark for mixed-use

environments in the Middle East.”

Valued at over $4 billion, the project spans 1,870,000 square meters of built-up area and 370,000 square meters of leasable area. It will include a luxury shopping mall and five towers featuring mixed-use functionalities such as hospitality, commercial, and residential spaces. The Avenues – Riyadh is scheduled to open in early 2026.

“This appointment builds on our track record of delivering complex, high-profile developments that shape the cities of tomorrow,” said Jason Kroll, chief executive of AECOM Arabia. “Our integrated team brings deep regional experience, digital delivery capabilities, and industry-leading expertise in sustainability, and we look forward to collaborating with our partners to bring this worldclass destination to life.”

AECOM will deploy advanced digital project management tools, data-driven dashboards, and lean construction methodologies to optimize project tracking, enhance stakeholder communications, and proactively mitigate risks — setting new standards for project delivery in the region.

ALEC Earns LEED Platinum, ALEMCO Secures LEED Gold for Dubai Offices

Following extensive renovations, ALEC has achieved the prestigious LEED Platinum certification for its Dubai headquarters, while its MEP subsidiary, ALEMCO, has been awarded LEED Gold for its corporate office and yard in Dubai Industrial City. Granted by the US Green Building Council for Commercial Interiors, these accolades highlight the company’s deep commitment to quality, sustainability, and employee well-being.

LEED for Interior Design and Construction focuses on the design and construction of interior spaces in commercial buildings. ALEC’s upgrades demonstrate its ability to deliver world-class green building solutions while holding its own operations to the highest standards.

“Our priority was to enhance the workplace experience for our people, while embedding sustainability at every stage,” said Barry Lewis, CEO at ALEC. “With improvements ranging from low-flow water fittings to LED lighting and advanced energy metering, we’ve reduced our footprint and reaffirmed our commitment to creating better buildings.”

Across both facilities, water consumption was cut by 55% through low-flow fixtures with sensors, while lighting energy use was reduced by 25% compared to ASHRAE 90.1-2010 standards, thanks to LED fixtures,

occupancy sensors, and enhanced commissioning. Indoor environmental quality was improved through low-VOC paints, adhesives, and materials, alongside daylight maximisation and better acoustics.

Responsible sourcing and material reuse were central to the project. Steel with 25% post-consumer recycled content, 100% bio-based wall boards, and high-recycled content in insulation and ceilings were used. Nearly all workstation tables, wooden wall panels, reception desks, joinery, and storage units from ALEC HQ were reused at the new design office, significantly reducing refurbishment waste.

These achievements build on ALEC’s track record in sustainable delivery, including LEED Platinum for the Saudi Arabia and UAE Pavilions at EXPO 2020, and LEED Gold for ADNOC’s headquarters, the Mobility Pavilion, City Centre Mirdif, and One Za’abeel. ALEC has also helped Abu Dhabi developments secure Estidama Pearl Ratings, including Pearl 2 for SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, the ADIA Carpark, and Abu Dhabi Airport’s Arrivals Hall.

“As we drive the sustainability agenda forward, our own renovations prove you don’t need to choose between sustainability and design,” Lewis said. “With careful planning, reuse, and responsible material choices, organisations can elevate interiors while delivering environmental performance. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved and look forward to supporting more partners in their green building journeys.”

ALEC and ALEMCO have strengthened their sustainability credentials, receiving LEED Platinum and Gold certifications.

Well-Being Through Biophilic Interiors

In the face of extreme weather conditions, Dr. Belma Alik Elsaej, Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, explores how biophilic design can foster well-being in interior spaces across the Middle East—merging nature with architecture to create environments that heal, inspire, and endure.

In the heart of the Middle East, where the sun blazes and arid landscapes prevail, architects and interior designers face a unique challenge: creating spaces that nurture the human spirit while navigating some of the harshest climatic conditions on Earth. In this context, biophilic design—a design philosophy that seeks to connect occupants more closely with nature—offers both an opportunity and a responsibility. It calls for a rethinking of interior spaces, not only in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of health, comfort, and psychological wellbeing.

The Paradox of Nature in the Desert

Biophilic design in temperate regions often emphasises large operable windows, abundant greenery, and access to fresh air. In contrast, buildings in the Middle East are built to keep heat out, minimise direct sunlight, and rely heavily on mechanical cooling systems. This creates an apparent

Biophilic design in the Middle East must evolve from a borrowed trend into a localised, climate-responsive design ethos.

paradox: how can one invite nature in while keeping its harshest elements at bay?

The solution lies in interpreting biophilia beyond literal greenness. It means drawing from the sensory and symbolic connections to nature that can thrive indoors, even when the outdoor environment is inhospitable. These connections are critical in urban Middle Eastern environments, where natural landscapes may be sparse, and indoor life dominates due to climate constraints.

Rethinking Interiors: A MultiSensory Approach

To effectively implement biophilic principles in hot, dry climates, designers must adopt a multi-sensory approach. Visual cues—such as organic forms, earthy textures, and locally inspired natural materials—can be used to mimic the patterns and calm of nature. Rammed earth walls, natural stone finishes, and wooden detailing can evoke a deep connection to place while remaining climateappropriate and culturally relevant.

Thermal comfort, often overlooked in biophilic conversations, is vital in the Middle East. Materials that moderate indoor temperatures, such as thick adobe-style walls or lime plasters, reduce the reliance on artificial cooling and foster a more natural interior climate. Shading systems, mashrabiya screens, and courtyard layouts rooted in regional traditions can offer passive cooling while casting dynamic shadows, adding both

function and poetic connection to nature.

Daylight, Not Heat

In a region where the sun can be more foe than friend, controlled daylighting becomes essential. Instead of large, unshaded openings, narrow slits, skylights with deep wells, or lightdiffusing materials can bring in soft, indirect light, mimicking the dappled effects found under trees. This satisfies the innate human craving for natural light without sacrificing comfort. Dynamic lighting systems, which mimic the natural progression of daylight, can also support circadian rhythms and emotional well-being. In windowless or sun-restricted interiors, circadian-tuned LED lighting is increasingly used to simulate natural light cycles, offering a practical solution rooted in biophilic science.

Green Doesn’t Always Mean Plants

While plants are a cornerstone of biophilic design, maintaining greenery in Middle Eastern interiors requires careful consideration. Native or drought-tolerant plants, such as succulents, olive trees, or palms, are more sustainable and easier to maintain. In high-end residences and commercial interiors, green walls with integrated irrigation and smart systems are gaining popularity. Still, simpler interventions, such as potted herbs or vertical gardens near kitchen spaces, are equally effective in bringing nature closer to daily life. When live plants aren't feasible, artistic representations of

nature—such as nature-inspired artwork, water elements, or even digital projections of natural landscapes—can offer restorative benefits. The key is to provide variety, authenticity, and engagement.

Designing for Psychological Well-being

In cities like Dubai, Riyadh, and Doha, where life moves fast and stress levels run high, interior spaces must serve as sanctuaries. Research continues to demonstrate that biophilic interiors can reduce stress, enhance creativity, and improve sleep quality. For the Middle East’s urban residents, this becomes not just a luxury but a necessity.

Spaces designed with psychological comfort in mind— calming colour palettes, zones of retreat, layered lighting, and acoustic softness—support mental well-being. In both residential and hospitality design, we see a shift toward more introspective, meditative interiors that prioritise emotional restoration alongside physical comfort.

A Future Rooted in Nature

Biophilic design in the Middle East must evolve from a borrowed trend into a localised, climate-responsive design ethos. It’s not about importing greenery or mimicking Western models, but about rediscovering and reinterpreting age-old regional principles—such as shaded courtyards, breezeways, and water features—through the lens of contemporary science and well-being. As climate resilience becomes a global imperative, the Middle East has a chance to lead by example: by embracing biophilic interiors that honour nature while protecting people from its extremes. In doing so, we can create spaces that are not only beautiful and sustainable but also healing, meaningful, and deeply human.

Supported by sovereign wealth and diversified assets, these investors prioritize sustainability, livability, and future economic relevance in every project they undertake. Their philosophy is not just about owning land or property—it’s about shaping infrastructure that supports people, cities, and national growth for generations.

The influence of Abu Dhabi in real estate development goes far beyond physical construction. It includes the integration of smart technologies, green building practices, and urban planning that aligns with both international standards and local culture. KING SALMAN PARK: Redefining Urban Life in Riyadh

King Salman Park emerges as a gamechanger, reimagining urban life through shaded pathways, smart mobility, and daily destinations just minutes away, says Rukn Eldeen Mohammed, Special Projects Director at Omrania.

Urbanism is at a pivotal moment. Around the world, cities are reimagining how we live, move, and connect — driven by the growing appeal of the “15-minute city” concept. But in Riyadh, where intense heat, car dependency, and sprawling urban form define

the landscape, the challenge is how to adapt this vision to a hot-arid, car-focused environment.

The answer is King Salman Park (KSP) — poised to become the largest city park in the world and a transformative force at the heart of the Saudi capital. Far more than a green retreat, KSP offers a uniquely Saudi interpretation of the 15-minute city, rethinking proximity, liveability, and sustainability in one of the planet’s most demanding climates.

A Saudi Evolution of the 15-Minute City

At its core, the 15-minute city is about accessing daily needs within a short walk or cycle. For Riyadh, that vision requires a localised evolution. Spanning 16.9 square kilometres, King Salman Park blends global best practices with Salmani design principles and climate-responsive strategies. Led by Omrania and Henning Larsen, the master plan creates a compact, mixed-use, people-first city-within-a-city, replacing asphalt sprawl with shaded walkways, green loops, and vibrant neighbourhoods. “We’re not importing an urban theory — we’re transforming it,” says Rukn Eldeen. Mobility is central to this transformation, with integrated BRT and Metro lines, autonomous electric vehicles, cycling networks, pedestrian-friendly routes, and smart mobility hubs. “Mobility here is freedom, not just transport,” he adds.

The Innovation Loop

Central to the park is the 7.1 km Innovation Loop, an urban ring that shapes the park’s structure and experience. Designed for autonomous vehicles, bicycles, micro-mobility, and shaded walking, the Loop links cultural venues, transport hubs, residential areas, and green spaces in one seamless journey.

Far from being a mere transport route, it doubles as a microclimate engine. Shading, cooling vegetation, water features, and carefully designed wind corridors make outdoor movement comfortable for much

King Salman Park
“We’re not importing an urban theory — we’re transforming it.”

Designing for Climate Comfort

Riyadh’s harsh desert climate is not treated as a constraint but as a design driver. The masterplan integrates shaded arcades, misting systems, and native vegetation to reduce radiant heat and enhance comfort.

Building orientation is optimised to capture prevailing breezes and shield against hot winds, while light-coloured materials and passive cooling strategies further extend the comfortable outdoor season.

of the year. Every resident or visitor can reach major destinations and amenities within 15 minutes.

Integrated Urban Quarters

King Salman Park is a collection of nine distinct urban quarters, each with its own identity and purpose. They range from mixed-use neighbourhoods with homes, shops, and wellness facilities, to cultural and educational districts, to transit-oriented developments.

Designed with a dense yet breathable street grid, shaded public spaces, and ‘finger parks’ that bring greenery deep into the urban fabric, each quarter functions as a self-sustaining community.

“We designed for granular walkability, not just city-scale icons,” notes Rukn Eldeen. “That’s the essence of the 15-minute experience.”

Culture, Health, and Daily Life

The park’s urbanism is rich with cultural, creative, and recreational layers. Across its expanse are 27 major cultural, educational, and leisure assets, including the Royal Art Complex, National Theatre, botanical gardens, sports facilities, museums, and open-air cinemas.

These aren’t standalone attractions — they are integrated into daily life through plazas, alleyways, and public squares. Whether it’s morning meditation in a wadi park or evening storytelling in a community square, KSP ensures culture is part of everyday experience.

Ecology as the Heart of Urban Life

King Salman Park is a vital environmental asset for Riyadh, acting as the city’s “green lung” and supporting the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030 by capturing carbon, purifying the air, managing stormwater, creating habitats for biodiversity, and reducing the urban heat island effect. By treating ecology as infrastructure, the park makes sustainability a tangible and visible part of urban life. More than a landmark, it serves as a model for Saudi Arabia’s urban future, offering guiding principles for the expansion of new districts and the renewal of older areas—prioritising people over vehicles, using climate as a design catalyst, integrating culture into everyday life, and making proximity the norm. In essence, the Saudi 15-minute city is not an imported formula but a home-grown reinvention, proving that proximity is about dignity, comfort, and the joy of being close to what matters.

“IDWORKS GLOBAL REDEFINES WORKPLACE DESIGN WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS PRECISION, AND EVERY SPACE TELLS A STORY. WE DON’T JUST BUILD OFFICES. WE CRAFT ENVIRONMENTS THAT SHAPE CULTURE, SPARK INNOVATION, AND LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY.”

A major factor in IDWorks’ success is its seamless integration of design and construction. By combining architecture, interior design, engineering, and project management under one roof, IDWorks eliminates the common disconnect between vision and execution. The result is faster delivery, higher quality, and far fewer compromises. Their turnkey design and build service has become a hallmark of their approach, offering clients a single point of contact from concept to completion.

That process is supported by an experience that reflects high standards at every level. “For us, excellence isn’t limited to the finished space it extends to the client journey,” Asha explains. “From our project leads to our communications, we aim to make the experience seamless and considered.” Clients echo this sentiment. Lifera, a Riyadh-based biotech company, shared, “Working with IDWorks was effortless. The attention to detail, speed of execution, and ability to capture our vision made the project a huge success.”

As the expectations for modern workplaces evolve, IDWorks has embraced new priorities, including sustainability, wellness, and smart technology. Its commitment to responsible sourcing and low-impact construction demonstrates a forward-thinking approach that aligns with today’s environmental and social values.

Expansion remains a key focus. With new offices recently opened in Amman and Dubai and an IDW Design Studio set to launch in Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District. IDWorks is pursuing global reach with regional relevance. The team blends international design standards with a deep understanding of local culture and context, ensuring that each project feels distinctive and appropriate to its environment.

Upcoming projects continue to push the boundaries of workspace design, from a regional HQ for a fintech company to a creative co-working concept in Jordan and new developments in both DIFC and KAFD. These initiatives reflect IDWorks’ bold vision for shaping work environments that are not only beautiful and functional but also future-focused.

Leadership has played a central role in the company’s growth. Mohammed Asha was named CEO

of the Year 2025, an honour that reflects both his vision and the strength of IDWorks’ internal culture.

The multidisciplinary team including architects, designers, engineers, and project managers, operates with a shared purpose and a commitment to excellence that runs deep.

Looking ahead, IDWorks is positioning itself not just as a high-end office renovation firm but as a long-term innovation partner. The company’s fiveyear strategy is centered around three pillars: smart workspaces powered by advanced technology, net-zero sustainability targets, and global expansion with culturally attuned execution.

For organisations seeking more than just design, for those looking for spaces that reflect their purpose, elevate their performance, and inspire their people. IDWorks Global is setting a new benchmark for workplace transformation in the region and beyond.

Traditional models often burden them with managing disconnected designers, contractors, and consultants. VM eliminates this complexity by offering a unified system built on complete alignment from concept to completion.

What truly sets VM apart is its all-under-one-roof philosophy. Architecture, interiors, and landscape are not treated as separate silos — they are designed together, harmonized from the very beginning.

“We don’t just think about the inside,” Zeid explains. “We don’t just think about

DINING MEETS STORYTELLING

RAYAN NICOLAS, GLOBAL FOUNDER & CEO OF AMELIA DUBAI, ON BLENDING STEAMPUNK ELEGANCE, NIKKEI CUISINE, AND IMMERSIVE HOSPITALITY INTO ONE UNFORGETTABLE DESTINATION.

Amelia Dubai has quickly become a standout in the city’s hospitality scene. What do you believe sets it apart from other high-end venues in the region?

What sets Amelia apart is its ability to deliver both spectacle and soul. Amelia is more than just a beautiful venue, it’s a journey. From the moment guests walk in, they’re immersed in a multi-sensory experience where every detail is intentional. The space blends modern steampunk elegance with warm hospitality, offering something truly unique in Dubai’s high-end scene.

The Nikkei menu bridges precision and creativity, appealing to a wide range of palates without compromising identity. The cocktail program has gained international attention for its innovation, attracting top mixologists and cocktail lovers from around the world. It’s not just dining or nightlife — it’s a destination.

You’ve successfully translated the original Beirut concept into the Dubai market. What were the biggest adjustments you had to make for this new audience?

Amelia Beirut first opened its doors in 2018, built on a strong identity and precise brand guidelines that gave a clear framework for international expansion. When bringing the concept to Dubai, the biggest adjustment wasn’t the concept itself, but adapting its scale and cultural versatility to meet the expectations of one of the world’s most diverse and demanding hospitality markets.

Dubai is shaped by multicul-

turalism and global standards. It took over a year of careful market research and observation to fully understand what the audience here truly values. The result was the realisation that it’s not about how much money you spend, it’s about delivering a complete, meaningful experience that feels authentic and worth every moment.

Amelia is not a copy of another venue; it’s a distinctive brand with its own DNA. The challenge was to evolve it without diluting its essence. The design was scaled up, the operational model refined, and every detail elevated to match Dubai’s world-class expectations. That sounds simple in theory, but executing it well is one of the hardest things to achieve.

The steampunk-inspired retro-futuristic theme is quite unique. What inspired this design direction, and how does it reflect Amelia’s brand philosophy?

Every founder brings their own philosophy to a concept, and design has always played a central role for me. From the beginning of my career over 15 years ago, I gravitated toward industrial elements, but with a focus on refinement.

Many see industrial design as raw or simplistic, but the real challenge lies in balancing industrial and elegant, creative and cozy, bold and hygienic. Amelia represents the pinnacle of that journey.

The design started with the story. Before a single wall was drawn, the brand narrative was written. The goal was to take guests on a sensory voyage, where every detail — from architecture to music to gastronomy — played a role in the experience. The inspiration began with Amelia Earhart, a woman who defied expectations and chased greatness in a time when few dared to. Her story of courage, resilience, and her mysterious disappearance while attempting to change the

world became a core inspiration. The concept blends retro-futurism from the 1920s steampunk era with a modern, luxurious twist. This fusion of past and future, masculine structure and feminine grace, strength and elegance, is the essence of Amelia. It’s not just a design theme, it’s the

visual expression of our brand philosophy: daring, immersive, and unforgettable.

How do you approach innovation in a city like Dubai where standards and competition are constantly rising? In a city like Dubai, innovation

isn’t optional — it’s essential. But true staying power doesn’t come from chasing trends; it comes from building a brand with depth, clarity, and purpose. From the outset, we didn’t just create a concept — we built a brand with a soul. That means not reacting to competition but resonating with guests on a deeper level. The market is intense, with massive investments poured into new venues, a constant search for the next “it” place, and rapidly shifting trends. Yet, consistency, quality, and experience always win.

Innovation at Amelia is as much about operational excellence as it is about design or menu. Sustaining a restaurant in Dubai, where overheads run into the millions, takes strategic discipline. It’s about what you deliver day after day, season after season — not just on opening night. Longevity comes from consistency in value, experience, and execution. That’s what truly keeps a brand alive in Dubai.

You’ve emphasized a commitment to evolving menus and experiences. Can you tell us more about your culinary R&D process and how new ideas are implemented?

Since opening in Dubai three years ago, our menu has been diverse and expansive, catering to a wide

range of tastes and nationalities. The goal from the start was to create a menu so well-balanced that it would feel fresh and engaging even without frequent changes. The fact that guests rarely suggest changing it speaks volumes.

Nevertheless, innovation is part of our DNA. We introduce new menu items at least twice a year, not out of necessity, but out of desire. It keeps the experience dynamic, sparks curiosity, and showcases our ability to consistently create dishes that remain true to the Amelia identity. Our culinary R&D process is rooted in guest feedback and global awareness. We collect feedback daily from the floor, and observe emerging trends both locally and internationally — but never follow them

IN A CITY LIKE DUBAI, INNOVATION ISN’T OPTIONAL — IT’S ESSENTIAL. BUT TRUE STAYING POWER DOESN’T COME FROM CHASING TRENDS; IT COMES FROM BUILDING A BRAND WITH DEPTH, CLARITY, AND PURPOSE.

blindly. Every idea is reimagined through the Amelia lens to ensure authenticity. Ultimately, innovation here is about staying relevant, exciting, and consistent, without ever compromising who we are.

How do you maintain the balance between fine dining sophistication and the immersive, upbeat lounge atmosphere Amelia is known for?

It’s a precise and often underestimated challenge. Merging fine dining, immersive storytelling, and energetic lounge vibes doesn’t work everywhere. In many cultures, combining music and fine dining can feel contradictory, but in vibrant, global cities like Dubai, London, New York, Ibiza, Bodrum, or Mykonos, there’s a demand for that fusion: elevated experiences with rhythm, energy, and discovery.

At Amelia, this balance is achieved through precision in timing and flow. Early in the evening, the mood is refined for a sophisticated dinner. As the night progresses, the atmosphere builds naturally into a more vibrant, upbeat setting, without the concept ever feeling like it has shifted. This is the result of constant coordination between the kitchen, service team, bar, DJ, and floor management. It’s about controlling energy, not simply offering entertainment, so that every guest feels the experience was made for them.

What role do your partners, Michel Bassila and Eddy Gebrael, play in shaping the Amelia brand and ensuring its day-to-day excellence?

Michel and Eddy have been by my side since Amelia’s launch in 2018. They’re more than business partners — they’re part of the brand’s soul. The dynamic works because we’re constantly pushing ourselves and each other, never settling even when things are going well.

Eddy is the backbone of operational excellence, ensuring everything from service execution to guest experience runs smoothly. Michel is the face of Amelia,

blending sharp hospitality instincts with a deep involvement in culinary direction, ensuring the food identity aligns with the brand vision. Their combined strengths keep Amelia evolving, consistent, and grounded in quality.

Looking ahead, are there any exciting expansions or new concepts under the Amelia umbrella we can expect to see soon?

Yes, we’ve been working quietly behind the scenes on fully developed new concepts under the Amelia umbrella. Our team has invested heavily in planning, but timing is everything. With the market currently experiencing a wave of random openings, we believe it needs a period of stabilization before launching. Once the right window appears, we’ll move decisively — and soon. Our approach is not about riding trends, but leading with purpose, launching only when the moment is right.

With Amelia now firmly established in both Beirut and Dubai, what legacy do you hope to build through the brand on a regional or global scale?

A concept like Amelia isn’t made for every city. It requires the right environment — vibrant cities with strong spending power and cultural awareness. This isn’t just about protecting the brand image; it’s also about the operational reality, given the high overheads and expectations.

We’re now at a stage where regional and global expansion is part of our strategic vision. Our management and operational systems are ready, and as soon as the right opportunity presents itself, we’re prepared to move — with 2026 firmly on our radar. There’s no single country locked in yet, but multiple markets are being studied carefully to find the best fit for both the brand and the business model. When we do expand, it won’t be rushed. It will be intentional, sustainable, and true to the DNA of Amelia — just like every decision we’ve made since day one.
