The most rewarding and inspiring part of this community are the people whose hearts and minds are touched by this magazine, and their lives change forever. The recent presidential election made some people very happy, and many people furious, scared, and feeling unsafe. For those who feel fear, and need some support, Conscious Community offers you some articles that will help you look at things from a higher perspective. As Albert Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

First, I want to introduce Angel Carlton who used to write for Conscious Community (and The Monthly Aspectarian), and she is back with a new column called “Embracing Change.” Her article will challenge you to pick love over fear: “Will you choose to complain and feed the negativity, or will you consciously raise awareness by observing without judgment, understanding the process of change, and nurturing the fears in others who are too scared to see the light through the darkness?”

Recently, I found a card on my car window saying: “Something wonderful is happening for you right now. From the Universe.” Wonderful things are happening for every one of you right now!

Mary Montgomery in her article “Five Steps to Upgrade Your Attitude” will give you some great suggestions on how to uplift your spirit, and be the bright light that shines on every person you meet on your way. “Smile and the world smiles with you.”

When I look back on my life, and I am only 33 years old, things that challenged me the most gave me the most joy, happiness, and transformation! I am very grateful for them. Dr. Leslie Mendoza Temple, ABoIM is the Medical Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Glenview, IL, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Does the medical community shy away from the use of medicinal marijuana?

It really depends on whom you’re talking to. In my opinion, there are many physicians who are ready to learn about it. Yet this doesn’t translate into physicians being ready to make recommendations for its use. Some are concerned about gaining a reputation as a medical marijuana doctor, as in other states around the country. What they are beginning to see is that the laws in Illinois are much more defined, especially when qualifying candidate patients, which causes the process to be slower, yet helps to maintain medical integrity.

Do you prescribe medicinal marijuana?

No. Physicians do not prescribe medicinal marijuana. Marijuana is illegal under federal law. What physicians are allowed to do is certify patients for eligibility to get a medical marijuana card.

How did you become involved in the medicinal marijuana movement?

Do you feel medicinal marijuana usage would gain more traction if pharmaceutical companies were to become involved?

I was inspired to become involved, when I looked at the conditions. It was at that time that I realized that many of the conditions listed represented my patients. As a doctor, I already employ the use of integrative and com-

How cost-effective is integrative therapy?

Provided that more patients have access, integrative therapy is more cost-effective than some other therapies. This is largely due to the fact that it allows us to isolate patient issues and provide remedies. More traditional therapies require expensive MRIs. Although they provide us with valuable information, they don’t provide us with remedies.

What is integrative medicine?

I would love to talk about Sponsor a Patient. At NorthShore University Health System, a large medical system of four hospitals, we provide an integrative medicine program where we offer massage therapy, physician consults, talk therapy, acupuncture, and nutritional herbal supplementation. What we’ve noticed is that many of these services are not covered by insurance. Therefore, people are required to pay out of pocket. In many cases, it becomes out of reach of those that could benefit from it the most.

We started a benevolent program with the hope of being able to provide services and free treatments.

Those providing services do not receive any individual benefit, other than the fact that we are able to help others. We don’t advertise a lot because of lack of funds. We welcome all donations, and if you are willing or inclined to help, please let me know.

How do you hope the medicinal marijuana community will help make integrative medicine more accessible?

My hope is that they will contribute to such causes.

Part of what the medicinal marijuana community is supposed to do is to give back to the community. This could be beneficial to providing more opportunities for patients to participate in the benefits of integrative medicine, because we have the same patients.

I believe that any physical imbalance within me is a form of dis-ease, the root of which grows from energy blockages. That being said, I caution that having this view can give the ego full reign to criticize, blame, and attack oneself for physical challenges that arise. The ego can be powerful, and often uses physical imbalance as a means to express critical and cruel emotional abuse. Recently when I shared that two friends had cancer and leukemia, fellow spiritual seekers were quick to judge them as being spiritually broken because of their illness. While perhaps not as outspoken, at times I catch myself doing the same; not only with others, but also with myself. I do a constant dance between owning and honoring the energy blocks within my body, and criticizing myself for having them.

Last month I discovered that I was experiencing imbalance in the area of my body that houses my 1st and 2nd chakras. For a couple of weeks I felt pushed and pulled between trying to heal through mind-body medicine versus western medicinal treatment. While I cannot claim I now have 100% clarity on this issue, through contemplation and connection with these areas of my body, I decided to seek support through all of the means that are offered to me.

-Ludwig Van Beethoven My first healing opportunity came with the arrival of musician, metaphysical practitioner and gong aficionado, Kenny Kolter. Originally from the Midwest, Kenny comes to Chicagoland a few times each year to share his healing gift. He truly is a man who followed his passion, and in doing so has been graced with a myriad of opportunities to practice sound healing throughout the US. I’ve heard about Kenny and his gift for several years, and finally had an opportunity to experience his sound healing prowess firsthand. Best known for his gong baths, his abilities with sound frequency

healing were evident. When I first heard him working with the gong and drums, I was transported to another time and place. He clearly invokes the magic of ancient shamans and sages into the room when he performs. As I immersed myself in the sounds that surrounded me, I noted how the stress in my body softened, and how, afterwards, I felt energized and inspired.

With the hours I’ve spent meditating, contemplating, and doing the energetic work these past several months, I’ve no doubt that there’s been a substantial energetic change in my first two chakras. That being said, I still believe that surgery is necessary.

I look forward to a powerful and potent partnership between the energetic and physical healing within my body. I welcome the light of spirit to fill me, and I honor the science that is the foundation of western medicine. I’ve learned to fill myself with the deepest of gratitude and appreciation for all of my body’s wonderfully, divinely engineered parts. I thank my feet for carrying this “heavy load” for over half a century, and I praise my reproductive organs for the darling daughter that they graced me with. I thank my heart for still ticking after surviving many of life’s ups and downs, and I acknowledge my digestive system for processing all that I feed it. I’ve been truly blessed with a body that has been patient, flexible, and supportive.

He also did a one-on-one healing session with me, and my response was most telling. Despite feeling energized during the session, afterwards I immediately went into a deep sleep for 40 minutes! My body was clearly integrating the energy healing that it received. For my final healing adventure, Kenny invited me to attend a drumming circle with his co-host, Christine Moses. This event was magical, mystical, and very cathartic. We started drumming around a warm and radiant fire, and later, as the evening’s showers began to rain down upon us, we took to the protection of the garage.

We took several emotional journeys, sharing our feelings and personal anecdotes on various issues. After doing so, we then proceeded to drum through them. I had never attended such a circle, and found the emotional release to be very transformative.

I’ve also attended several other healing sessions, such as acupuncture, yoga, and the Sacred Chamber Process, and Oneness Blessing events at The Flowering Heart Center. I also attended a Cocoa and Chanting event with Harmony (a native of Bali who is a remarkable woman, and a gifted entertainer and healer). I also sought energetic clearing with Betty Giannopoulos, who is a Chicago native, and an excellent Body Code practitioner. This healing process interfaces with the subconscious, and scans a multitude of energetic, inherited, physical, and mental issues that reside within the body. Once located and understood, the practitioner then clears them in the energy field. While I’ve never experienced Body Code healing, I was amazed at how many layers of emotional healing we exposed, and I experienced a variety of sensations while undergoing the treatments. I was impressed with Betty’s nutritional and supplemental suggestions, finding them very helpful.

I’ve been particularly dedicated to my emotional, spiritual, and physical healing for the past two months, and will soon be having an ultrasound to recheck the issues. As I take this journey towards greater wholeness, I note how I frequently catch myself having a black-or-white attitude. I see myself as somehow having to choose between being spiritually committed, OR being of this physical world. Throughout this healing period, I’ve come to realize that it doesn’t have to be one or the other. I can choose to use both

THE YEAR OF REDIRECTION FROM THE HEART

One of the ways I like to make the end of a year work on my behalf is to assess how the past year has redirected me. It’s tempting to look back on the year, and regret errors I made, or things that seemed not to work out.

Failure and regret exist only at the shallowest level of appearances. What seems to be a dead-end sign is an arrow pointing you in another direction.

The universe is saying, “This isn’t it. There is a better direction for you. Go that way, and you’ll find what you are looking for.” No movement in life is wasted. It all has a purpose. You just have to know how to read the signs.

Dee and I were shopping for a new home when we found a lovely parcel on a mountainside. The lot was large with magnificent views, a meandering stream running through it, and decently priced. Although we would have preferred a property with a home already on it, we liked it, and told the real estate agent we were going to make an offer. She arranged for us to meet the owner.

The day before we were to sign, I received a letter from the bank that mortgaged my current home, informing me that my mortgage would be more than doubled starting the next month. This had to be an error, so I phoned the bank. The agent informed me that the loan I had taken out had been based on interest-only for 10 years, and now I would have to start paying the principal as well. This news was quite burdensome, considering

I would have to pay a large mortgage on our current home until we sold it, plus the new one, plus build a new home. I felt overwhelmed, and told the agent that we would not purchase the property.

A month later we discovered a different property closer to the ocean, just a few miles down the hillside from the one we’d looked at. This property already had a well-built turnkey house on it with a great view, PLUS a car and truck thrown in with the deal, all at a price not much higher than the mountainside property. We fell in love with the place, a friend offered us the money to finance it, we made a deal, moved in, and loved it.

Living at the lower altitude, we discovered that the weather in this microclimate was entirely different than those nearby. We looked up the mountainside to see the property we had originally considered, and noticed it was extremely rainy. Our new property was almost always sunny. We could hardly believe the difference in rainfall over just a few miles’ distance, and a few hundred feet in altitude. But it was so. We were extremely grateful that we didn’t purchase the mountainside property, as it would have been much too rainy for us.

property, I see that the mortgage increase was a huge gift. Spirit was redirecting us to live in a place much more desirable, and avoid the work of building a house. What seemed to be a curse was a blessing. We eventually sold our original house, so everything worked out perfectly.

Everything is working out perfectly, even when it doesn’t appear to be so. All spiritual traditions teach us that the world we believe is so real, is really a manifestation of maya, or illusion. When a job, business deal, or relationship falls through, don’t be fooled by the current appearance.

There’s more going on than meets the eye. If this deal or relationship was right for you, it would have worked out. There’s something better in store for you. Relax, breathe, and be patient. You are being redirected.

A young woman called in to my radio show (hayhouseradio.com), and reported that a guy she had dated told her he didn’t want her to phone or text him anymore. She was wondering if she should pursue him. “Why would you want to pursue someone who doesn’t want you?” I asked her.

“This fellow obviously doesn’t recognize the beauty and value you offer, or he is simply not a good match.

There’s someone else out there who will desire and appreciate you for who you are. If you are busy chasing someone who doesn’t care, you’re not available to someone who does care. Let go of what doesn’t fit, so you are free to receive what does fit.”

What is right for you will find you without struggle or suffering. If you have to fight with yourself, or someone to make something happen, it’s not it. There’s a better fit for you, and you can have it, if you let life take you where it—and you—wants you to go.

How has this year redirected you to get clear on what you want and what you don’t want, and where you would like to head now, instead of where you were headed? If you are now heading in a new and better direction, the experiences of this year have served you well. Let us bless them all, along with the greater good to come.

One of My Greatest Vulnerabilities THE SHARED HEART: HEARTFULNESS By: Joyce and Barry Vissell

What if Joyce dies before me? This is one of my greatest vulnerabilities.

Sure, I could die first. Statistically, women live longer than men; yet this is not my vulnerability. My dying first brings up other feelings, like abandoning my true love; not being there to help her when she needs me. Of course, I know I’ll always be there for her, just without a body. I have full faith that in the realm of soul, I’ll be even more present for her, without the distractions here on earth.

Even though we’re both healthy in the important ways, we are still 70 years old. We are now in our senior years. Death of our bodies is no longer something that can be ignored.

Why is Joyce’s passing such a deep vulnerability for me? It’s because of how much I need her. In our early years together, I tried hard not to need her. I was fine with loving her. But need, that’s a different story. To need Joyce would prove my inadequacy as a human being; yet need her I did.

Eventually I could no longer fool myself; I had to face my inadequacy, my dependence, my weakness. I received a bonus; by accepting my dependence on Joyce, I am becoming a stronger man (yes, it’s an ongoing work).

By pushing away my need, I was weakening myself. By pushing away my humanity, I was also pushing away my spirituality. It’s a package deal; you can’t have one without the other.

With fuller awareness of my need for Joyce, and opening to the fully human part of me, the thought of her death is a scary thing. In my deepest vulnerability, I feel like a lost child, unprotected by the warmth of Joyce’s tender love. I see myself wandering the earth, unprotected by her loving arms, and making decisions without her feminine wisdom.

My higher mind knows I can survive, even thrive. I know I will call upon her soul night and day, maintaining a spiritual connection. My soul knows our profound connection cannot be lost after one person’s transition.

The grief I envision is not only the grief of a child; it is also my adult self that would dearly miss my best friend in all the world. On a recent solo backpacking trip, I saw more clearly the joy that Joyce brings to my life. It’s even in her name! When I’m alone, I’m more serious. I have peace, quiet, and contentment, but not joy. The joy comes from being with Joyce.

To end there would be only a morbid meditation. The next step in the meditation is crucial: I then open to her ever-present soul. I feel her pouring her love into me night and day without end. I feel her more with me than ever, undistracted by her busy life on earth. This gives me great comfort.

It is after these special meditations that I approach my beloved Joyce with more openness, vulnerability, and love than usual. My appreciation of her has blossomed, and she thoroughly delights in it.

Some of the happiest moments of our lives together have been in nature.

Not just being together, but sharing God’s natural beauty with my beloved.

When I see Joyce being thrilled by a stunning sunset, or the reflected light on a pool of water, my own heart is more thrilled by her reaction than what we are observing. How I would miss that!

I would miss our physical togetherness. We have a special ritual before going to sleep every night; we call it “pit time.” We’ve done it for decades.

I raise my arm, and she snuggles into my armpit with her leg around mine.

It’s delightfully comforting for both of us. I would especially miss our sexual connection, the wonderful union of our bodies; yet I would miss just as much the little physical connections, holding hands while walking or praying, and all the little touches we give one another.

I would deeply miss the way she “plays” with me; she teases me with such sensitivity and love. A few weeks ago, we were leading a workshop in Assisi, Italy. I was telling the group about a special place we were about to visit. I said, “And if we’re lucky, we can be there at a time when there are no tourists.” Joyce caught a subtle expression of distaste on my face, a slightly wrinkled nose, and a quick downward pointing gesture of my fingers, when I said the word tourists. It was so quick that no one else in the room seemed to notice. Joyce could have ignored it, but it was too rich a moment. She stopped me, and pointed out what I had done, in a way that helped me see the humor in my actions. It became a precious moment for the whole group, as it illuminated an unconscious judgement I held for tourists. It became a delightful inside joke for the whole group. We began to notice and bless those wonderful throngs of tourists who mingled with us during outings, while many in the group mimicked my wrinkled nose and downward pointing fingers. I loved it all!

I occasionally practice a very unusual meditation, one that I wholeheartedly recommend that everyone practice with a loved one. I face my worst fear, that of Joyce dying. I let it play out as a conscious nightmare; I see it happening; I let myself go through all five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. I feel as deeply as possible my life without Joyce, alone in our bed without “pit time,” eating meals alone, coming home to an empty house, and trying to take care of her beloved rose bushes without her loving touch.

Political Transformation is Underway EMBRACING CHANGE By:: Angel Carlton As I entered the voting booth, I felt great excitement for the incredible opportunity to cast my vote for our nation’s next leader. As an American citizen, it is one of the rights we have to be a part of change, and propel our country in a direction that will serve the good of all; at least that is the idea behind this right.

This election didn’t exactly take us down Easy Street, as it generated much separation in our society. It saddens me to see that since the election, this separation seems to have worsened, heightened into anger, and provoked violence in many cities. This is certainly not the change I anticipated when I cast my vote. I’m certain anyone who is reading this Conscious Community Magazine feels the same heaviness in their hearts.

Without getting too much into politics, I want to first say this; it is precisely these moments in time that propel the greatest transformation.

As difficult as it is to watch the world seemingly fall apart, we must realize one thing…all change happens for a reason. Specifically, to move these lower vibrational energies into the direction of the next highest vision we have for ourselves or, in this case, our country. As a global citizenship, we are experiencing a major shift, and it is playing out its course in scenarios such as this, the latest US election. Sit back and see for yourself; the transformation of our political system is underway. Not just in America, but across the globe.

You see, we cannot build a beautiful new structure of our government on the current cracked (some say corrupt) foundation it has become. So, what will naturally take place is a “breaking down” process in the form (or illusion) of destruction, in order for rebuilding to occur. It doesn’t matter who is in the White House, rest assured this would occur with whomever won the election.

Although I realize it may be difficult to do at times like this, I invite you to lift yourself up to a higher perspective. Do this so you can see that this is part of the landscape for the reinventing phase, leading us to the next greatest version of our country. Then, when we can observe the shifting sands of our political structure from our higher selves, a peaceful knowing that all will be fine begins to envelop our hearts, fear gently subsides, we can begin to embrace the change that is happening, and finally allow this process to complete its course.

I believe that all events in life occur for our good; and isn’t it cool that you chose to be here during these exciting, historic, and epic transformative times for our world? You are here at this time for a reason.

My question to you is: how will you contribute, respond, and show up to these events? Will you choose to complain and feed the negativity, or will you consciously raise awareness by observing without judgment, understanding the process of change, and nurturing the fears in others who are too scared to see the light through the darkness?

If I were to cast a ballot for positive change, I would vote for you to become the next greatest changemaker! I believe we will prevail if we stick together, engage with each other as humanity intended, and serve one another selflessly.

Gandhi’s words ring true today more than ever before: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Values, attitude adjustments, party time!

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS By:: Elizabeth Summers

Amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, deeper issues present themselves in the month of December. On a mundane level, we may be forced to examine our values… “Hey, what’s important here? Who’s important here?” as we go shopping for that perfect gift. The question becomes … on what value system are you basing your choices?

December is the twelfth month of the calendar year, and this Number adds down to the Number Three. In Tarot Card interpretation, this is The Empress, and that girl loves to shop! She is the Mother energy that brings in nurturing, abundance, expressions of tenderness, and a focus about working with children. All this energy is so perfect for the Christmas season. A feeling of extravagance and feeling rich illuminates her world.

In Astrology, big daddy Jupiter brings this abundance along also with this vibration. Currently traveling through the sign of Libra, all of us will find sources and resources to bring abundance into our lives.

The question still becomes what are your values? Focusing more on the Number Twelve of December, we find ourselves revisiting this question. In Tarot, the Twelfth card is The Hanged Man who is hanging upside down by one leg on a crossbeam, and one just knows he is thinking to himself “how on earth did I get myself into this situation?” More deeply, The Hanged Man energy is about attitude adjustment through reversals of situations in one’s life, often brought about by significant emotional situations about one’s personal value system.

As an Esoteric Numerologer studying the ancient viewpoints surrounding Numbers since 1988, it has been found that the Number Twelve represents completion of a full cycle of experiences. The spiritual leaders of old often had to advise their followers to exhibit “a reversal of conduct, requiring different evolving lifestyles for their spiritual growth.”

As a Life Path Number, arrived at by adding the month, day, and year of birth together, a soul who has chosen this journey has brought significant past life experiences into this current incarnation.

Author Faith Javane, in her book MASTER NUMBERS: Cycles of Divine Order offers this explanation: “When individuals enter an incarnation as Number Twelves, they have already had a full cycle of experiences, and learned of the possibility of regeneration toward a higher consciousness. They belong to the group of developed souls who have accumulated unusual inner strength through many and varied experiences from many lifetimes in the flesh. However, these people still may be hindered by old habits that need to be changed. Therefore, the soul attracts that which it needs as a learning experience. A reversal of negative thoughts can bring about positive effects, and aid in achieving ideal

goals or aspirations. If challenged, the Number Twelve person’s initial response might be “why me?” Instead, they should think “why not me?”

When it comes to prosperity, Twelves usually blame their ill luck on others, rather than on their own selfish thinking. In that case, the Law of Reversal would correct the “situation” … an attitude adjustment about their values and self-worth.

For the last couple of years, as Saturn was moving through Sagittarius, now has been a time to finally face anything we might be running from, and to be wholly transformed by the experience. Thus, once again, The Hanged Man, and the Number Twelve bring the “turnabout” energy into play, especially in December.

As we all do our work in spiritual development, the justice of the Universe steps in with the higher vibration of the Number Three, and that is the World Card in ancient Tarot. This Number Twenty-One adding to the happy energy of the Three, brings a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment, and involvement. NOW it’s party time!

By resetting our “values thermostat,” we can better bring all the parts of our lives together, achieve dynamic balance, and work in unison with our fellow people. This growth of spirit helps us to realize our goals, achieve our heart’s desires, see dreams come true, and step into a life experience of flourishing and prosperity.

In this season of giving, give of yourself. Use your gifts and talents to bring “heart energy” to others. Share what you have, render service, feel engaged, be active, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with this value of personal satisfaction.

Perhaps the late Bertrand Russell V. Delong put it best… “The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. The really important things are not houses and lands, stocks and bonds, automobiles and real estate, but friendships, trust, confidence, empathy, mercy, love and faith.”

Your Greatest Gift Comes from Your Deepest Wound WISDOM OF THE ANGELS Nine-one-one - all you have to do is say these three numbers, and everyone has a visceral reaction. September 11 was a time when everyone sat up and took notice, and said we need to change things up a bit. We need to come together and create a new world, a new way of being. It impacted everyone differently, but it definitely impacted every one of us.

I know it impacted me dramatically. That was the week I joined Living Spirit Church, and met Rev. Sheila Graves. In one of our earliest interactions she told me, “Lori, your greatest gift comes from your deepest wound.” I had no idea what that meant at the time, but today I do. Let me explain: That deep wound began when I was only 18 years old and my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a radical mastectomy, followed by the ups and downs of radiation and chemotherapy, my father walked into my room one day, and handed me a manila envelope filled with all kinds of alternative treatments for cancer. With tears in his eyes he said to me, “I think there’s something in here that can help your mother.” I tried and tried to read the research, and each time I did my eyes glazed over. It was over my head. I was the English major, not the science girl. I was the girl that was going to write and create, not be involved in science - or so I thought.

Needless to say, as a young naive girl, when my mom passed on a few years later, I had a nagging sense of guilt over not getting through that medical research, wondering and wondering if in fact there might have been something in there that would have made a difference, something that would have helped her to heal, perhaps even to survive. While I’ll never know the answer to that question, I do know it was part of the journey that led me to my greatest gift.

You see, when the proverbial sh-t hit the fan in my own life, and I attempted to go down the traditional medicine path alone, my life only spiraled

further and further downward. It wasn’t until I tried a holistic approach to the extreme chronic fatigue and clinical depression I was experiencing that things began to turn around. I dove in with eyes and ears wide open, and learned everything I could about organic foods, nutritional supplements, proper food combining, diet and nutrition, and eventually emotional healing. I studied anything and everything that can help people heal holistically.

In the midst of all of this I asked God to show me what I was here for. I prayed, and I waited. I prayed some more, and again I waited. Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity, I was divinely led to become a Spiritual Life Coach, and subsequently a Visionary Artist. The work I do today is actually based on the Science of Epigenetics (yup, I said science). Scientists have proven with study after study that it is not DNA alone that creates disease; rather, it’s beliefs passed on from generation to generation that are held in our subconscious programming, that create our health and wellbeing. Dr. Bruce Lipton, who is regarded as one of the leading voices of this new biology, tells us that genes and DNA do not control our biology; that instead, DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including energetic messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts, emotions, and beliefs.

For years, my dear friend and holistic practitioner, Dr. Mark Brown and I argued about the importance of having patients look at the emotional components behind the diseases they were contracting. The day he was personally diagnosed with a brain tumor was the day he finally agreed with me. You see, Mark had done everything physically possible to take care of his health, and yet he somehow contracted cancer. He admitted he had not completed his own emotional healing work, and was now ready to continue that journey. Unfortunately, by then it was too late; he was already losing cognitive functioning.

So, I searched the world to find something, anything, that would help him.

It was then that I stumbled upon Glen Russell’s website; alternative-cancer-care.com. Glen, who lives in New Zealand, has worked with doctors from around the world to find holistic approaches to the treatment of cancer, specifically emotional conflicts that contribute to various types of cancers.

While researching all of this, I had an opportunity to revisit that deep wound of mine. The importance of doing our emotional healing work once again intensified. Now that I was capable of understanding the science, I could look back at my mother’s diagnosis, and the emotional trauma that very well may have led to her disease. You see, according to research on alternative-cancer-care.com, cancer of the left breast generally stems from an emotional conflict with one’s mother, child or home. Medical practitioners who developed this theory observed that the trauma generally occurs approximately 18 months to two years prior to the initial diagnosis. So, thinking back to when I was 16, I remembered this was when my mother found out through a very bizarre series of events that she was nearly illegitimate, that her parents had married only six short weeks before she was born. She was devastated by this news; her heart was broken. She felt unloved and unwanted, and was absolutely sure that these things she had believed her entire life now seemed ever so true.

While I can’t tell you for certain that this trauma created my mother’s disease, what I can tell you is there’s a reason my dad put that folder on my desk when I was 18. There’s a reason that God keeps putting this information in front of me. There’s a reason that I have friends who are doctors in both the traditional and holistic medical fields, who are not only listening, but paying attention to the new science. They are realizing it’s time to do things differently, that it’s time for a “health care 911.”

While I can’t make you any promises, I can offer you one thing, and that is hope - hope that at the end of the day, if we look at our emotional conflicts, and we heal them, we will not only be happier, but our immune systems will function better; and when the immune system is operating at an optimal efficiency level, the chances of us contracting any type of disease will be greatly lessened.

Your Cheeks are Such a Pretty Pink!

Approximately 35% of my clients either have rosacea or are exhibiting the early stages of rosacea, known as prerosacea. Many of them don’t even realize they have it – sometimes I don’t either until we get into the service and I observe the way their skin reacts. I can always tell a few minutes into a facial massage because their skin becomes “pinkish”. Massage stimulates blood flow and engorges the blood vessels under the skin, resulting in a flushed look, almost like light sunburn. Early detection can help control flare-ups if you know what to look for and you understand what aggravates this condition.

If you have rosacea, here are some ways to prevent or reduce the severity of flare-ups: 1.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun. UV rays can seriously agitate rosacea, as well as worsen and intensify the appearance of it.

Skip the Alcohol & Spicy Foods. Unfortunately, alcohol can be one of the number one offenders when it comes to rosacea flare-ups. Red wine seems to be the worst redness-enhancer.

Choose tequila, vodka or gin — which don’t seem to have as much impact on the sensitive skin of people with rosacea. Stay away from spicy foods – they can exacerbate rosacea and induce flare-ups.

Keep Your Face Covered in the Winter. Cold, dry air will irritate and worsen your symptoms. Keep your face covered up with a big collar or scarf in the winter.

Limit Your S-T-R-E-S-S. For people who have rosacea, stress can also be a trigger for their skin condition. A study by the National Rosacea Society (NRS) found that 69 percent of rosacea patients said they experienced a flare-up related to emotional stress at least once a month.

NO Hot Showers on Your Face! I know it feels good but letting the hot water in the shower run over your face is a recipe for disaster. It causes instantaneous swelling of the tissues and blood vessels. This is a definite no-no. You want to constrict the vessels, not dilate them.

For those of you who are afflicted by rosacea, you’re not alone. An estimated 16 million people have it. I’m one of them – I have rosacea on my chest, neck, ear lobes, a little on my cheeks and I’m convinced I have it in my eyes (Ocular Rosacea). Although not officially diagnosed, I fit all the symptoms.

When I have a flare-up, it looks like I have severe sunburn on my chest, but my face is three shades lighter! It can be freaky looking at times, but I’ve learned to live with it. I did a really poor job of protecting my skin from the sun in my earlier years. I was the person who thought that sunburn looked good on my face and chest. It gave me color, and I didn’t have to wear foundation or blush. I’m paying the price for my ignorance now.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Rosacea is more common among fair-skinned people and women, though it can affect all skin types and ethnicities. If you “blush” or “flush” easily, you have a higher susceptibility to rosacea. Common characteristics of rosacea include flushing and redness of the skin, facial skin hyper-reactivity, spots, papules, pustules, inflamed blood vessels and facial swelling.

It typically begins any time after age 30 (although I’ve seen it as early as 24) as a redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go. In some cases, rosacea may also occur on the neck, chest, scalp, eyes or ears. Over time, the redness tends to become ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear. Left untreated, bumps and pimples often develop, and in severe cases the nose may grow swollen and bumpy from excess tissue. In many rosacea patients, the eyes are also

The holidays are upon us. The giving lists have begun. Wise stewards of the earth can slow the pace of the season by creating home-grown gifts from the garden. Taking the time to make a personal gift imparts a bit of our best selves to friends and family during this festive time of year.

Whether creating a craft or an edible delight, there are numerous simple, inexpensive ideas to celebrate the spirit of the season, including: Mini-Garden Delights Create a mini-herb pot for your favorite gardener. Paint a medium-sized terracotta pot with black chalkboard paint. Place 1-2 packets of herb seeds, a piece of chalk, a favorite herb recipe, and a small bag of seed-raising mix into the terracotta pot. Chalk paint and seed-raising mix can be purchased at any local home improvement/garden store.

2 Tablespoons dried basil

•

1 Tablespoon dried marjoram

•

½ Tablespoon dried rosemary

•

1 Tablespoon dried summer savory

•

2 Tablespoons dried thyme

•

2 Teaspoons lavender flowers

1 Bay leaf

That’s Italian Seasoning Blend •

4 Tablespoons dried basil

On the pot, write the name of the seed, the recipient, or a message with chalk. Wrap the pot in cellophane or simple fabric. Add a ribbon or string, with a sprig of fresh rosemary, and a name tag around the top of the gift.

1 Bay leaf

Wreaths of Joy

Place packaged Italian seasoning blend, sticks of spaghetti, and a pasta spoon in an interesting bag or basket. Wrap basket in clear cellophane; add a ribbon or natural dried raffia bow.

Connect with the outdoors for this nature-inspired decoration. While you’re on a walk, collect pine cones to create a pine cone wreath. Pine cones can also be purchased at a craft store.

Hot-glue dry pine cones to a grapevine wreath base. The wreath base can be found at any craft store, or check resale/secondhand stores. After gluing pine cones onto the wreath, add a bit of color by painting them, or leave natural for a rustic look. Either spray paint or acrylic paint is recommended.

For more sparkle, dab glue onto pine cones with a clean, dry brush. Sprinkle cones with glitter while glue is wet. Once glitter is dry, add a coordinating bow if desired.

DIY Delicious Dried herb seasoning blends are a delicious addition to winter meats, stews, and soups. A gift of these mixtures will delight any cook on your list.

Use dried herbs from the garden, or purchase herbs from the store. Create your own combinations, or try one of the following recipes.

Once assembled, place the herb mixtures in airtight jars, small tins, or attractive bags. If choosing bags, use self-seal bags, or bags with twist ties to retain freshness. Include a simple sticker or tag with the ingredient list.

Batter Up Use frozen fruit from the garden to create muffins, scones, mini sweet breads, or other baked goods. Place the finished treats in a small basket lined with unique, vintage napkins or linens. Visit resale/secondhand stores to find an eclectic selection of very inexpensive, antique linens. Add a small jar of honey or jam to the baskets. Wrap basket in cellophane; tie with standard ribbon or raffia ribbon.

Cookie Magic For young bakers on your list, give them a DIY mini-cookie skillet. Combine the dry ingredients from a favorite cookie recipe; i.e. monster chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, etc. Fill a small re-sealable bag with enough for one large cookie. Place bag in a mini cast-iron skillet with a printed recipe card.

Wrap in cellophane, tie with child-themed bow. This interactive gift will keep young hands busy on a too-cold day.

Make this season sparkle by giving gifts of hand and heart to those you care about most.

Five Steps to Upgrade Your Attitude CYBERWEAVE SPIRITUALITY AND THE INTERNET By: Mary Montgomery Holiday season is right around the corner, and I think we should focus on the festive and good will side of the season. But, how to do that when so many of my spiritual friends and I are in a state of deep mourning because of the election results? Staying in the doldrums is not the answer; so, I decided to put together a list called “Five Steps to Upgrade Your Attitude.”

Here goes:

5. Laughter and Music: Scientific research shows that both laughter and music can boost your attitude. Right now I am combining both attributes by listening to that Monty Python classic “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” Give it a listen on YouTube (youtube.com/watch?v=-ECUtkv2qV8).

As a fitting closing to this soul-disturbing time period, I offer the first stanza to help you with your attitude upgrade:

1. Smile and the Whole World Smiles With You: In the words of Thich Nhat Hanh: “Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.” A Psychology Today article, “There’s Magic in Your Smile,” by Ronald E. Reggio, Ph.D. (psychologytoday.com/ blog/cutting-edge-leadership/201206/there-s-magic-in-your-smile), addresses the scientific evidence that supports these words. Scientific jargon aside, the nutshell is “that each time you smile you throw a little feel-good party in your brain. The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness.”

2. Little by Little, Bit by Bit: One of the valuable pieces of advice from the Abraham-Hicks material is the importance of recognizing your negative emotions instead of denying them. Then slowly, bit by bit, you can reach for feelings that start to raise your vibration. One A-H technique is The Focus Wheel Process. There is even an app that you can download that helps you do it. Using the app, or a piece of paper with a large circle on it, you first identify what you do not want, and then find statements that make you feel a little better, and write them in clockwise fashion around the wheel.

And this’ll help things turn out for the best...

3. Wouldn’t It Be Nice If…: This is another Abraham-Hicks technique, although it is also addressed in the book What If It All Goes Right?: Creating a New World of Peace, Prosperity, and Possibility by Mendhi (Mindy) Audlin.

Audlin’s method is called What if UP! (whatifUP.com) In a nutshell: Identify a challenge or idea. Notice how you mentally approach the idea or challenge—and then do a What if UP! That means challenging yourself to mentally expand possibilities beyond what you believe to be possible. Rev up your imagination, and let it run wild and free! And, to make this process even more powerful, do it with a group of equally motivated friends.

4. Happy for No Reason: This is the name of the book by Marci Shimoff: Happy for No Reason: 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out (happyfornoreason.com). I respect Shimoff’s research on this, because she herself was not a happy child or adult—until she tried what she calls “7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out.” I’m a naturally happy person, yet after Tuesday’s election results, I’m definitely down in the dumps. I plan to reread this book and listen to the CDs! Here is a sample technique: Marci calls this The Pillar of the Heart—Let Love Lead. Marci points out that the heart has a powerful energy field. Negative emotions cause erratic patterns called heart rhythm incoherence. Loving emotions create heart rhythm coherence. To attain coherence, Marci’s Happiness Habits include: Focus on Gratitude; Practice Forgiveness; and Spread Lovingkindness. Scientific backup, stories, and exercises are provided for this and all of Shimoff’s Happiness Steps.

The Moon is the fastest-moving planet, and transitions from one sign into the next every 1-3 days. What that means is that the Moon is constantly in motion, it’s never retrograde, so it’s inevitable that she will connect with “something,” i.e. another planet or transit, until the moment that she doesn’t. During the moments when she doesn’t connect, we call it the Moon Void of Course. When these events occur, the best thing to do is to meditate, sit still, and listen to your higher guidance.
