PUBLISHER’S LETTER

HALLOWEEN STORIES I

love being in the flow of life and observing how everything unfolds at the right moment. When I put together each issue of Conscious Community Magazine, I feel that my writers and I are guided by Spirit. Each month’s articles and columns have a theme which gives each issue a totally unique form and feeling. I love this freedom of creation which allows this magazine to offer its readers what they need the most at the current moment. This month’s theme is the communities which we are all part of — and Halloween. Conscious Community Magazine’s festival, expo and retreat season is coming to an end. Thanks to all of the people who helped me with these events, as well as the organizers for inviting us. I met so many new, like-minded people this year, made new connections and discovered new opportunities for the magazine. I will share about all of this later in the magazine. Being at those different conferences this year made me realize how much we need each other and that all of us are in unity. This month’s podcast guest, Gary Gach, spoke with Janae and Spencer about how crucial creating conscious communities is for the future of the planet in their interview, The Community of Communities.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

Also, in October, we celebrate Halloween, which in its many forms, is one of the most recognizable celebrations around the world. This holiday reminds me that there is life on the other side and that we can communicate with our departed friends and family all the time—if we are aware of that or not. Many of you knew or met Walter Perschke, the previous publisher of Conscious Community Magazine. Walter passed away in May of 2016. I worked with him during the last nine years of his life. I know that he touched many of your hearts and that he is still doing so from the other side. I know for a fact that he is looking over me and this community right now. I would like to share with you some of my “Walter stories” since he passed away. One day, I got a call from SynergenX Health & Wellness Center in Burr Ridge saying that they would like to have copies of Conscious Community Magazine for their center. Their address is 11S250 South Jackson Street, Burr Ridge. When I looked up this address, I said to myself, “This wellness center is located where Walter used to live and held his meditations.” The next day, I arrived at the center and discovered that the center is exactly on the opposite side of the road from Walter’s home! I started laughing. Then I went to the center and put Conscious Community Magazines on the table. I heard a man’s voice calling to me, asking to advertise in the magazine. He told me that he sees the magazine everywhere and would like to be a part of it. We were talking about business, and then I asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Walter!!!” Another story happened last year on Thanksgiving Day. Some of you may not know that Walter Perschke was a part of the first generation of his family to be born in the U.S. His parents came to the U.S. from Germany. While driving home from Thanksgiving dinner, I saw a car with license plates in front of me that read, “Danke,” which means “Thank you” in German. If you have any “Walter stories” about how he communicated with you, please let me know by email, Kasia@ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com. Finally, I would like to introduce our newest writer for Cosmic Daily Weather, Bernadette Evans. She is from Vancouver, Canada. Bernadette is an astrologer, as well as a lightworker, who will let us know every month what is happening in the stars. Enjoy reading our October issue! The Best,

Kasia Szumal

Friends of Astrology 80th Anniversary! with Georgia Stathis on Synodic Cycles: Saturn/Pluto, Jupiter/Pluto, Saturn/Jupiter Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. When two planets conjoin, regardless of whether a different set does it every two or more years or another set does it every 35 years, each pairing has a certain cosmic DNA that begins a new phase in one’s life wherever it is happening in their chart. This is the gift of synodic cycles. The three alignments happening in 2020 are now in their final phases. One lasts for a 38-year cycle, another for 13 years and another is a 20-year cycle. It is important to remember that the most challenging portion of any of these cycles is as they come to an end, where the three are at the present time. Last phases bring confusion while at the same are in incubation mode waiting to start anew. Patience is key. An understanding that though things seem chaotic, they are simply losing energy in their struggle to maintain the status quo. We just have to ride the last waves of the cycles to begin again. Blood, platelet donations needed in wake of Hurricane Florence Thousands of lifesaving blood donations have gone uncollected due to drive cancellations forced by the hurricane, but patients still need critical medical care. 10

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018

ILLINOIS (Sept. 20, 2018) — As the American Red Cross responds to Hurricane Florence, providing food, shelter and comfort to those affected, individuals outside the affected areas are urged to help by giving blood or platelets to care for patients in the storm’s path and across the country. People can also help by making a financial donation to support relief efforts.

HURRICANE’S IMPACT ON BLOOD AND PLATELET DONATIONS Hurricane Florence’s wrath left catastrophic damage behind and took a toll on blood and platelet donations. Nearly 200 Red Cross blood drives in the Southeast were forced to cancel, resulting in more than 5,200 uncollected blood and platelet donations.

HOW TO HELP Donors of all blood types are urged to help restore hope to patients across the country by making an appointment today to give blood or platelets. Appointments can be made by using the Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Financial donations are also needed and allow the Red Cross to provide disaster relief immediately. Help people affected by Hurricane Florence by visiting RedCross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word FLORENCE to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Up-to-date information about how the Red Cross is responding to Hurricane Florence is available at RedCross.org.

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Ric

Q: I’m a 30-something woman who is reluctant to get my nose pierced because my mother has such strong, negative views on it. It’s ridiculous, but I don’t want her to be angry. Thoughts? — Mama’s Girl A: Dear Mama’s Girl, If you’re still basing decisions such as these on what your parent thinks, you may want to look into signs of codependency or enmeshment. You’re an adult woman who can make such decisions for herself, regardless of what your mother thinks. If you don’t, you’re living her life instead of your own. If the thought of a nose piercing is appealing, by all means, make yourself happy. If your mom tries to engage you about it, tell her kindly and neutrally that you understand how she feels, but it’s something that you like and it’s your decision alone to make. If you wish to keep the comments down when you see her, you might consider not wearing jewelry in your nose when you visit, so that it doesn’t needlessly trigger her which might make your visits more pleasurable. Q: My 23-year-old daughter recently revealed that she’s attracted to both males and females. I didn’t raise her like this. I want to get over my anger and disappointment. Can you help? — Beside Myself A: Dear Beside Myself, My counsel stands outside of religious concerns. It’s my opinion that we can’t

raise children up in their attraction or sexuality. Coincidentally, we can shame them into pretending to be something else under the shadow of our authority and strongly expressed beliefs, especially when accompanied by the instillation of fear. These tactics work only temporarily until they are old enough to go out into the world to freely express who they are separate from what we expect them to be. I see sexuality as a spectrum that can’t easily be labeled and put into a box. Some people feel that sexuality is a choice, especially when it lies outside of the more traditional roles of male and female coupling. In those circumstances, I often ask, “At what age did you make the conscious ‘choice’ to be heterosexual?” The majority would answer that it wasn’t a ‘choice.’ They were just attracted to who they were attracted to—often from a very young age. This is the case with those sexually attracted to others outside the typical binary options, although sex can also be entered into as a form of experimentation. There’s nothing we can actually do about who our adult children are drawn to, unless we’re willing to try to control and manipulate them to do things that make us feel more comfortable. It’s helpful when we can stand in neutral curiosity in an attempt to understand them outside of our sense of what’s right. We don’t have to agree, but it does mean that we honor their ability to live their lives as they see fit. Standing in unconditional love helps to maintain our connection

with our children as they won’t feel the need to disconnect from our questions, judgment and potential lack of acceptance by living a secret life which can be quite painful. This isn’t all about her; it’s also about you. Your energy can be well spent excavating where your base pain and objections are to her sense of sexuality by asking yourself some questions. Do you feel that her sexuality reflects poorly on you? Are you ashamed of what others might think? What other unconscious thoughts do you have? This is your opportunity to be accountable for your own thoughts and feelings, instead of projecting upon her that she’s doing something wrong because it brings you discomfort. Psychology Today states that young people who are questioning their sexuality are eight times more likely to commit suicide if their parents reject them. It is of utmost importance that we stand by them while working to address our own issues internally. Our disappointment with their sexuality is about us, not them. This is where we get to examine our unrealized expectations because we can’t be disappointed unless there was something specific that we expected. Our children’s sexuality doesn’t define them, but it may mean that we have some valid mourning to do for unrealized expectations of who they might grow up to be. One of the greatest gifts that parents can give to their children is unconditional love and acceptance. It’s even more of a gift to them when they see us consciously working towards the goal of being there and understanding them in the midst of our own internal struggles. Alecia Rice integrates higher concepts with wisdom to bring forth balance, perspective and clarity. She’s a personal advisor, speaker and gatherer of women. For perspective on life issues, you’re invited to text questions and comments to 681-321-1109. Discussions continue at @Ask Alecia on Facebook. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

THE COMMUNITY OF COMMUNITIES Interview with Gary Gach by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter For this interview, we had the delightful experience of speaking with author, editor, translator, mystic, teacher and poet Gary Gach. Lay-ordained by Vietnamese Buddhist and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh in 2008, Gary has authored, translated, and edited numerous books, including The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Buddhism. Gary lives in San Francisco and has worked as an actor, stevedore, typographer, legal secretary, editor-in-chief, webmaster and teacher (most frequently of late at Stanford Continuing Studies.) Besides Buddhism, he teaches haiku and mentors in English composition (most recently for doctoral students at Sofia University (California.) We spoke with Gary about the meaning of community, mindfulness and about the intentions he set for his latest book, Pause, Breathe, Smile: Awakening Mindfulness when Meditation is Not Enough. The following is only a small part of our in-depth conversation 12

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018

with Gary. To hear the rest of our conversation, download or stream the episode. Don’t forget to subscribe, like, review and share the Conscious Community Podcast on your preferred podcatcher app. Spencer: We’ve talked with a lot of different guests about the meaning of consciousness from their individual perspectives and from the traditions they practice. We haven’t spent as much time talking about what “community” means in general and what “conscious community” means. What does community mean to you? Gary: Right now, you and I, the three of us, are an energy field that represents the whole universe. And, we have listeners, who themselves are being drawn in to this community at this moment. I’d start there. [Laughs.] We’re always in relation to ourselves, other people and the universe in a way. If it is conscious, it becomes larger than ourselves, so that we can commune with all of life within us and all around us. Speaking from my personal experience, for a long, long time, I was yearning for and resistant to community.

Janae: I think that’s something that we find a lot actually in people who engage in contemplative lifestyles—contemplative practices. They’re kind of resistant to community. SS: Yeah, I don’t really like being around other people. [Laughs.] Gary: I was offering practice at lunchtime for people who work in a Catholic charity group. They invite lunchtime speakers. I’ve done this a couple of times, and I’ve noticed that everybody comes in, gets their meditation and goes out without any sense of what you might call in leadership terms, “teambuilding.” They’re offering mindfulness now in sports because it’s not only about being able to focus. If you look at these basketball players now, they don’t even look at who they’re throwing the ball to because they’re so connected. They’re working as a group. They’re going as a river. Even though they’re tremendous superstar egos, when they’re on the court and they’re in the zone they’re part of this organism. That’s a tough one, for most of us I think, it has been for me for various reasons. When you find a community, it’s the greatest thing. My teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, says, “There’s this idea of the Buddha coming again and if the Buddha were to come again it would take the form of a community.” I think we don’t have any disagreement that these are precarious times. These are challenging times. In order to meet the challenge, we need community. Otherwise, we become isolated like some tiger on a hillside that’s all alone or some bird that’s left the flock. But, if we can come together as a community, the magnification of consciousness in a community is something in and of itself that has a presence. When a human being is up in front of more than a hundred people there’s something in us that goes “Ooh, a lot of consciousness there.” You’re playing the consciousness there. Once when I was in front of a thousand people, whoa, I was the focus, I was the lens. That was like another order of magnitude of that feeling. Also, I have been with a thousand people on a retreat, and we spent all day walking up a mountain, looking out from the top of a mountain and coming down. Being part of a thousand people on a narrow trail, that’s kind of winding, requires this sense of conscious community. It’s not just, “Here I am with 999 people on this retreat, and I want to get mine, so I’ve got to make sure I don’t step on other people’s toes.” No, something else happens, and you go as a river. JJ: I feel that applies to musicians particularly. When you’re in front of an audience, even a small audience, you have this connection with people in the room. Even if you’re shy, and standoffish, and terrified of being onstage—but you feel that consciousness when you’re on the stage. Gary: I also go back to when I started on this path, which was when I was very young. I came to Buddhism, meditation and consciousness at the same time as I came to writing. The

early form of writing that really struck me was haiku. Everybody knows haiku, the shortest form of literature. What we’re learning now is that haiku originally wasn’t conceived as individual units. They were links in a group poem that people would get together in a great celebratory manner and practice observing this evolutionary group mind composing this group haiku called renga. It was only later that they said, “Oh, you can take the individual links and frame them unto themselves.” I say this because I’ve practiced renga with people online, and they’re just as good as renga that I’ve practiced with people face to face. That you’re aware that this is taking shape this was as a group mind, I don’t know what else to call it. SS: Kind of like that party game where you each write a sentence and then the person who writes the next sentence has to start with the word you ended with or whatever? Gary: The surrealists called it “exquisite corpse.” In the ‘20s, in France, that was very popular to do. One more thing that I wanted to say, is that the world is largely a product of community. Everything I see right now is a product of so many communities of people and living beings and whatnot. And, to form “conscious community” in these times is an opportunity to address imbalanced situations that have come about through collective community effort that might have been unconscious but are there. To give you an example, that I don’t think you would disagree with, is our climate. It’s not just that one person has done this. It’s not just one individual at the head of a company that’s responsible. It’s everybody. I have never owned a car because at an early age I got the message that oil is the drum that everything is going to be dancing to. So, I just said, “Ok, I’ll let other people do it. That’s not part of my karma.” You know I haven’t stopped global warming by one hair’s breadth. I’m just conscious of all that consciousness of which I am not a part, unless I use somebody else’s oil and I get a ride from a bus driver or somebody else. In order to make any change in our climate, it will take community—a community of communities. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

TheosoFEST

Mind Body Spirit Festival - Wheaton, IL - Sept. 8, 2018 by Theresa Puskar “Rivers, ponds, lakes and streams—they all have different names, but they all contain water. Just as religions do, they all contain truths.” — Muhammad Ali When I arrived at this year’s TheosoFEST, I was delighted right from the get-go! The opening ceremonies began with an honoring of all religions and beliefs. Ten representatives from a variety of traditions shared rituals, chants, prayers and scripture, each of which united in speaking the language of love. The opening ceremony participants included Diane Eisenberg – Judaism, Mazher Ahmed – Islam, Danelys Valcarcel – Hinduism, Quentin Young – Native American, Jim Percic - Bahai, Amarjit Singh – Sikhism, Christine Pateros – Shamanic, Theodore M. Utchen – Humanist, Diana Cabigting – Christianity and John Cianciosi – Buddhism. I was moved by the breadth of ways in which each celebrated the divine. They were true to their traditions, and in their own unique way, opened hearts and minds to the beauty and distinct voice of their practices.

As I have shared in previous articles, I am

so blessed, as I experience so many graces when I attend these events, synchronicities that advance my journey towards deeper healing and greater consciousness. This event was no exception! “Trying to find peace and joy without calming the mind is like arranging items on a table while an earthquake shakes below it.” — Chaitanya Charan Das

The first workshop I attended was Overcoming Negative Emotions with Chaitanya Charan Das. While he is now a monk, mentor and spiritual author of 16 books, at one time he was employed as a software engineer at a prominent multinational software corporation. After seeing how stress, depression, addiction and overall misdirection were all caused by a lack of spirituality, he felt a calling to share the spiritual wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita with the world. In this particular workshop, he shared insights on how changing our conception can free us from negative emotions. Based on the bhakti tradition from the Bhagavad Gita, he explained that negative emotions, such as anger, lethargy, greed, addiction, depression and anxiety are created by our conception. Citing a scenario in which a woman commits suicide because her boyfriend did not answer her phone call, he explained that her conception was the cause of her strong negative emotions. Likening the mechanics of the emotions to technology, like a computer virus, her programming infected the software of her

mind. Like her, while we can’t control the outer world, we often allow negative conceptions to settle within us. The way to free ourselves from this virus is to identify ourselves with our inner screen. To do so, we need to identify our emotions as opposed to identifying with them. While he assured us that he was not talking about suppressing emotions, but to view them unattached, as if we were watching ourselves on a movie screen. Then we can process them, understanding that we are not the screen. We are the seer. Seeing the difference between inner seer and inner screen helps us identify our emotions, as opposed to identifying with them. Once we understand that we are the inner seer, we can go beyond expressing emotions to processing them in a healthy way. Ultimately, by connecting with the supreme seer, we can overcome the negative and cultivate emotional health and positivity. I have recently been working on anger, and feelings of impatience, especially with others in my life who are critical. Of course, I know that being triggered Quentin Young, Theresa Puskar & Ginger Young by their judgmental disposition, I need to do further work on my own inner critic. This reminder that I am the seer and not the drama on the screen within my mind was further support as I strive to fully love and accept myself. “TheosoFEST is an annual open house mind, body, spirit festival celebrating the wisdom of the ages, the unity of all life, and spiritual self-transformation.” — Theosophical Society There were many vendors at the festival, two of my favorites being Kristin and Frank Panek’s Flowering Heart Center and Bharat Kalra and his healing pyramids and meditations. Both are really transforming and growing as spiritual communities. The Flowering Heart Center just opened a radiant new venue in Wheaton, and Bharat has just created some wonderful new audio meditations that assist you in deeper relaxation and reflection, creating a greater sense of peace and wellbeing. “The red ant taught me that I need to learn to overcome obstacles and ask for help.” — Quentin Young The second workshop I attended was Quentin Young’s Mitakuye Oyasin and Mother Earth: A Native American Teaching. Mitakúye Oyasin is a prayer of oneness and harmony with all forms of life, including other people, animals, birds, insects, trees, and even rocks, rivers and mountains. Quentin Young, of Lakota heritage, spoke about how this philosophy can help all people come together, accept each other’s profound differences and take care of Mother Earth at this critical moment. He has participated in all Seven Rites of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) ceremonies and has Sun Danced for over 20 years. Quentin has taught Black Elk’s vision at the College of DuPage and has lectured at several colleges and universities throughout Illinois.

As he filled his ca nu pa (pipe), he shared stories of his spiritual journey with us, Of course, the universe always delivers just what I need to hear, and I was taken aback when he told us of a vision quest he was on. In his quest, he ended up surrounded by red ants, and when he contemplated and asked their meaning, he was told that he needed to overcome obstacles and ask for help. As of late, it has become crystal clear to me that, for most of my life, I have avoided asking for help. I dreaded being perceived as a burden to others. Being honest with myself, if I dig deeper, I’d think I didn’t deserve the unconditional love and generosity of others. I guess the divine needed to emphasize this message just one more time to really let it sink in! “I fill the ca nu pa (pipe) with red willow bark. If you smoke the pipe, the red willow assists you if you have any lung disorders.” — Quentin Young Quentin encouraged us to say our prayers as he filled the pipe. He explained that our feelings, and thoughts end up as prayers in the pipe. He then took us through the prayers and rituals that he practiced while preparing the pipe. He described how sage rolled between palms, purified the hands and burning it distances negative spirits out of the circle. Burning cedar (which is a companion to the thunder beam people) informs the negative spirits that they have to leave the county. After the workshop, we went outside and joined in a circle under the magnificent standing people (pine trees) that were behind the main building. As his wife, Ginger sang, we each took a puff of the pipe. I felt deep appreciation and I was elated, as the asthma that I suffer from has been particularly agitated the past month. I laughed at myself as I anxiously inhaled as much of that smoke as I could get. I had a good cough afterward and knew that I definitely got some of that red willow medicine. I’m thrilled to report that it has been a week since the event, and the asthma has most definitely quieted. My deepest gratitude to the standing people, the ca nu pa, the red willow and to Quentin and his wife, Ginger. I giggle at these synchronistic graces, as a child would as she dived into her Christmas stocking that was filled with Santa’s goodies. What I’ve learned is that when we are open, anticipating and grateful, there is always room for another gift in that synchronistic stocking of infinite grace! HALLOWEEN The True History by Walter Perschke Halloween is ancient. We know it dates back to the ancient Celtic and Druid traditions thousands of years ago. Ancient Celtics divided the year into two parts, the light and the dark. The holiday of Samhain (sah’-wen) celebrated the dividing point between the two halves, and the beginning of the dark half. As the harvest was completed and the days grew shorter, a harvest festival was celebrated on October 31, until sunset on November 1st. The festival was a celebration of a successful harvest or prayers to carry the people through the winter until spring. It could be a scary time of possible food shortages; nights were fearful and a time to stay home. One of the beliefs of the ancient Celts was that time and space became permeable and one could cross from one dimension to another at this time. It also meant that spirits of the dead could cross over into the Celts’ reality and interact with them, a haunting if you will. Not just the dead could cross over, but people or entities from other times, because the veil lifted was not just of time, but of space as well. The veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, the dead could mingle with the living, and the living could be lost in the dimension of the spirits. This is at the root of many of the Halloween traditions. Our obsession with Halloween decorations of skeletons, tombstones, coffins and ghosts probably began right there in Celtic practices. Bonfires were a staple of Samhain. The Celts observed a ritual where they drove their cattle between two rows of bonfires to determine which cattle were to be slaughtered for the winter. The celebration of the dead was not limited to the Celtic culture. Many, if not most cultures, in particular Ireland and Scotland, had a day, or period of a day, to celebrate those who have crossed over in death. Agricultural societies were very prominent in their observance of a holiday for the dead, usually coinciding with the end of the fall harvest. The traditions of the holiday for the dead in pagan cultures were carried forward to us today by the Christian church. Adopting a pagan date for a church holiday was a fairly common practice in the Christian church, which also adopted December 25, the birthdate of the pagan god Mithra, for another famous Christian holiday. The practice was believed by the church to facilitate the conversion of pagans, who were already 16

celebrating these days, to Christianity. It looks like it worked. Lemuria, the ancient Roman feast of the dead, celebrated on May 13, was the end of a period of placating the dead. This was a time of not just honoring, but making peace with the departed. In Roman times, milk was poured on graves to prevent haunting. They were also offered small cakes, which over the centuries have been transformed into today’s candy “treats.” Pope Boniface IV coopted Lemuria, changing the name to All Saints Day, all the way back in the year 609 A.D. The stated purpose was changed, but the traditions and practices of the celebration were passed on in great part. All Saints’ Day was renamed All Hallows’ Day and moved to November 1st, the day after Samhain, in an effort to supplant the pagan holiday. History does not give us an exact date, but it probably occurred during the papacy of Gregory III (731-741). As a result, October 31st began to be called “All Hallows Evening,” then shortened to “All Hallows Even” and we were on our way to the shorter name we know today, of Halloween. Further enhancing the tradition and mystique of Halloween, the church added November 2nd to the calendar as an “All Souls’ Day,” to honor all who have passed on from life on earth. This reinforced the association of Halloween with death and souls. Purgatory, a church concept, played a role in the development of our Halloween traditions and practices. Catholic theology says that souls in purgatory, a place between heaven and hell, can be elevated to heaven by the prayers of the living. A Medieval custom, children would go “souling” door to door and receive spiced cakes filled with raisins called “soul cakes,” in exchange for praying for the souls in purgatory, with this practice contributing to today’s trick-or-treat. The endless cycle of life and death was a part of many traditions, not just Halloween. The practice of wearing masks came into prominence in the early 1600’s, often associated with violence because the mask concealed the identity of the perpetrators. The practices leading to today’s Halloween had become more rowdy and sometimes violent. Door to door beggars, often children, but more frequently adult indigents, became more aggressive with their door to

door begging. The “trick” part of trick-or-treat came progressively into being, with violent demonstrations and vandalism, including bonfires, against the resident population and was facilitated by the wearing of masks to conceal the identity of the perpetrators. The boundaries between life and death were not the only ones tested, social norms and public behavior were as well. Guy Fawkes, on November 5, 1605, tried to blow up The House of Lords in England. While Fawkes was unsuccessful and subsequently hanged, a new event that is still practiced today in parts of England began to mock and celebrate his attempt by parading in the streets, begging door to door, and setting bonfires. Guy Fawkes Day is also known as bonfire night, in part because after his hanging, his body was burned in a bonfire. All of this transpired in Europe, but the colonization of America was about to begin. The early American colonists brought some of their Halloween precursor traditions with them from Europe to the New World, including the fascination with death and the departed. Guy Fawkes Day was among them. The Pilgrims were not particularly receptive to this event, but they had their own contribution to make to Halloween, witches. The witch craze that swept Europe and America in the 1600’s, and well into the 1700’s, solidified the images we now associate with this holiday — broomsticks, cauldrons, black cats and pointed hats were all fairly commonplace household staples in colonial homes, but their association with witches became indelible with the Salem and other witch trials of their time. Why? Who knows? There are no further recorded influences on our modern Halloween until the American Civil War. With a half-million or more dead during the war, many of their bodies unclaimed and unknown, gossip began which became legend. The souls of the dead, lost on the battlefield, return home as ghosts to haunt their familiar places or to live as ghosts, wandering in the limbo of the battlefields and surrounding areas. Ghost stories were not new at this time, but the War Between the States gave rise to a myriad of new tales of the realm of the dead. Incidentally, the practice of wearing a white sheet as a ghost costume arose from the burial shroud common in Western Europe and America then. The attachment of these stories to the developing celebration of Halloween was just a matter of time. Following the war, a major immigration to America from Scotland and Ireland began. Both nationalities had their own version of Halloween which became integrated into our now native legends. The Scots brought us the bogeyman and the stories were very scary. In their tradition, the bogies, or bogeymen, were pesky ghosts bothering children. We are not certain where the tale of Jack O’Lantern originated, but the new wave of immigrants brought it with them to our shores. It did originate in Europe, and the original lanterns were carved with faces from a turnip and placed in windows to ward off evil spirits. Pumpkins came later, an American contribution that happens to be harvested at just the right time. Scots and Irish also donated the stone throwing and prank playing by adolescent boys to our culture. Not that we wouldn’t have created it for ourselves. This practice was to erupt in very destructive ways that surpassed just public nuisance during the 1920’s and early 1930’s in America.

While all this was going on, Halloween, which had been a predominantly rural phenomenon, continued its migration into the cities. The 1920-1939 period was transformational for Halloween. It was a time of great stress, beginning with the Roaring 20’s and ending in the Great Depression. The permissiveness of the former coupled with the crowding in the cities created an opportune environment for the next incarnation of this holiday. The trick part of trick-or-treat became very violent in the cities. Pranks that had been benign became malicious and destructive. Throwing stones became window breaking on a major scale, including the windows of those newfangled automobiles. The bonfires in the streets and open areas became torched buildings. This destruction peaked in 1933, during the Great Depression and that became known at Black Halloween, and sometimes Hell Night. But the aftermath was very positive. Civic groups began to organize community events which included parades, costume parties and contests, and games. A manufacturer, Dennison, began to mass produce costumes for sale at the local drugstore and dime store. Sears, then the largest retailer in America, listed costumes and paraphernalia in its catalogues for the first time. The mass merchandisers had discovered Halloween and it had ‘arrived’ in close to its present form. The malicious destruction was over and commercialism was on the rise. But the story is not over yet, and perhaps it never will be, as we reinvent this popular holiday yet again. The term “trick-or-treat” is relatively new. The practice, as we have seen, is quite old, but the term first appears in print in America in 1939. Trick-or-treating became indelibly mainstream when it received the blessing of an American icon, Charlie Brown, in the 1966 comic strip, Peanuts. Trick-or-treating had officially arrived and so had the theme of the “Great Pumpkin.” I would be remiss if I did not mention one more twist in the road. In 1978, the classic John Carpenter movie ‘Halloween’ was introduced. Scary, you bet! And that is exactly the new face we were presented with. Not exactly a new idea, but definitely a new face, or mask. Michael Myers became the best-selling mask of all time, and we have a new log rekindling the fire of Halloween. Films and television have had a profound effect on how we practice and celebrate Halloween. It is now a major adult activity which it wasn’t 50 years ago. It is still primarily a day for the kids but adults are increasingly involved, not just as parents, but as participants, especially in costumes. There is a self-transformation aspect of American society that has found an outlet here. Once a year, people get to play out their fantasies in full costume and share it with other adults. Hopefully this is not their only avenue of self- transformation, but if it is (or isn’t), I hope they have lots of fun with it. Where else can grown men get to be action figures and women get to be ladies of the night?

[FROM THE HEART]

HOW MANY MIRACLES DO YOU GET? by Alan Cohen A coaching client reported that years ago when she became pregnant, her doctors told her that the baby would not survive. She and her husband prayed fervently for the child’s wellbeing, and the baby was born healthy and went on to live a happy life. Since that time she had a few miscarriages, and now the couple very much wants another child. “Do you think we each get a certain allotment of miracles, and when we use it up, we get no more?” she asked. “That’s not how it works,” I told her firmly. “Miracles and well-being are our 18

natural state, given freely forever. Only the human mind puts limits on the good available to us. It is not God’s grace we need to beg for. It is our own. And we don’t need to beg. We just need to claim it.” We were all born in utter freedom. Every limit you perceive has been learned, a tight and restricting cloak laid over the magnificence that you are. One of the most exhilarating explorations in life— really your only purpose—is to discover the illusory limits you have adopted, shine the light on them to reveal their untruth, and grow beyond them.

Guilt—also learned but not true—tells us that we are selfish to want good things for ourself. It warns us that if we become happy we will somehow remove the happiness of others. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your happiness contributes to the happiness of others. Because you are a spiritual being, the energy you exude influences others more than your actions. Thus your genuine joy is your greatest contribution to humanity. Accepting your blessings does not diminish the quality of life for anyone else. The nature of blessings is to expand.

A woman named Sara attended my Life Mastery Training in Hawaii. “I worry about money, I yearn for a relationship, and I don’t feel good,” she told the group. During the training Sara examined, questioned, challenged, and moved beyond her sense of smallness and non-deservingness. She experienced “aha” moments and opened to greater prosperity. The day before the program concluded, Sara told me, “I just did something I have never done before. I phoned the airline and ordered an upgrade to first class for my flight home. It cost me $875—but I’m worth it!” “Congratulations,” I told her. “You just graduated from the training.” A few weeks later I phoned Sara to find out how she was doing. “Fabulous!” she told me. “I loved my first class flight, and when I arrived home I had a miracle. I was going through some financial papers and I found some unknown funds that exactly equaled the cost of the training plus travel, including my upgrade.” Sara’s experience provides a shining model of expanding prosperity. The more you claim your right to well-being, the more the universe provides. Life gives all to all, but we each receive what we are willing to let in.

accept them, I must keep them here.” “That’s incredible!” the man replied. “Look at that Rolls Royce over there!” He went to sit in the Rolls and was astounded to find a tag with his name on it. “This was the car I always wanted!” he said. “Every night I prayed to you for a car. . . How come I never got this one?”

“Yes, you did pray every night for a car, and I heard your prayer,” God answered. “But you prayed for a Ford.” Instead of asking for what he really wanted, the man asked for what he thought he could get, so he manifested not according to his possibilities, but his expectation. The universe is happy to fulfill our grandest visions, but we must have the confidence to ask for them. Do not be shy when asking God or people for what you want. Bring a small cup to the ocean, and you will come away with a small volume. Bring a larger cup, and it will be filled. Somerset Maugham said, “It’s a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.” You cannot ask for too many miracles. There is no limit on what you can receive. All is given. When you accept, the transmission of love is complete.

After a man departed from the world, God was showing him around heaven. When the two passed a locked room, the fellow asked, “What’s in there?” “It would make you very sad to see what is in that room,” answered God. “I want to see it anyway,” the man insisted. God opened the door to reveal a vast chamber of treasures. There were exotic jewels, sophisticated electronic entertainment devices, and luxury cars. “Wow, what a collection!” the man exclaimed. “Why would these riches make me sad?” “These are the gifts I offer people,” God explained, “but if they are not willing to CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

HEAL MIND AND BODY WITH MEDITATION by Bharat Kalra, LMT

When I talk about “my body,” I am declaring that I am separate from my body. When I say “my mind,” I am declaring that I am not “my mind.” But, if I am not mind or body, then what am I?

As our understanding of how the mind works advanced scientifically, the importance of mental health to physical health (and vice versa) became clearer.

Long ago, human life revolved around three basic needs: food, clothing, and shelter. All activity focused on making sure these three needs were met. As societies evolved and advanced, two more basic values emerged, values of vital importance still to this day: health and happiness.

We found that worry and stress tended to make people more vulnerable to illness. People who were happier were more resistant to disease. Studies in longevity revealed the importance of a positive attitude. The whole concept of the placebo is based on the platform that having positive thoughts can ultimately affect physical conditions.

What makes us healthy? What makes us happy? These two questions were seen as different matters. “Health” referred to bodily functions, and was a matter for science. “Happiness,” seen as a state of mind, was a matter for philosophy.

Thus, we know our thoughts influence our health. Meditation—a method for focusing and “training” our thought— can have a tremendous impact on our physical well-being.

The great thinkers in science and philosophy always saw the link between health and happiness (remember Benjamin Franklin’s famous aphorism “Early to bed, early to rise...”). 24

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018

WHAT IS STRESS? If asked to describe good health, I might say it is the absence
of disease. I would say happiness is the absence of

grief and sadness. Similarly, meditation can be understood only when we can define stress, which can be a positive force. In human history, finding food, clothing and shelter was prompted by the stress of not having these things. So stress that prompts us to act is positive stress. Positive stress helps us carry on with our day-to-day life. When the body needs water, the brain tells us to pick up the glass and drink some water. When the bladder is under stress, we know what we need to do.

Recently, I was treating a patient with cold lasers for swelling caused by a dental abscess. I took her into a meditative state
and asked her to observe the inflamed part. This process was repeated two-three times. After the session was over, she said she was healed, with a mild memory of the wound still present. Her dentist the next day observed that it was remarkable how quickly she had healed. I mention this patient because she is a practicing doctor herself.

While reading this article, close your eyes and observe what
is going on in your mind. Do this for 10 minutes without interruption. You will realize just how crazy our inner world can be, with multiple thoughts crossing the mind every minute, most of them totally irrelevant.

SPIRITUALITY

When you analyze these thoughts, you observe that most are either connected to the past or to the future. The past is gone and can’t be changed, while the future remains out of reach. Both are effectively out of our control. Stress is the by-product of fear—the anxiety of feeling that the past and the future are out of our control. The body is prompted to take action, but this action never takes place. Negative thoughts take shape and grow in the mind. This creates negative stress.

MEDITATION The present is the link between the past and future. This link carries the secret key to the happiness we have been discussing. That key is meditation. Meditation is nothing but the art of disconnecting from the past and anxiety about the future, and learning to live in the present moment.

One of the great things about meditation is it doesn’t conflict with your particular type of spiritual practice; in fact, one can approach meditation as an empiricist—a scientific observer. However, with an open, attentive mind, meditation can deepen and enhance your existing spiritual practice, whatever form that may be. “If I am neither mind nor body, then what am I?” Once you ask this question, the world within comes upon the threshold of upheaval, and nothing remains the same. The answer to this question lies in meditation. An Indian master puts it this way: “One cannot ‘do’ meditation. Meditation just happens. Meditation means just
‘to be.’ Meditation happens only when all activities cease on a physical and mental level and what remains is just ‘the being’.... No activity, no thought, no emotion. And this ‘to be’ is just bliss. Where is the source of this bliss? How can you be blissful when you are not doing anything? This is possible because this is happening without any reason. Existence, itself, is bliss.”

GUIDED MEDITATION

Meditation is sometimes described as concentration; this is
true to a very limited extent. With the mind so full of thoughts, concentration on any one subject is a tool to minimize and focus mental activity. Then, when the mind starts fully concentrating on that one object, even that object is removed. What is left for the mind to hang onto? Nothing! That is when real meditation starts. We learn the art of not doing anything, and become observers, rather than doers.

Talking about meditation, even if it is an experienced teacher explaining, is no substitute for the experience. When starting your journey, a guide is crucial to getting the most out of the experience. Simply sitting quietly is only a start, and it is far more difficult than people realize.

THERAPEUTIC VALUE OF MEDITATION

Guided meditation is like a show window; it gives a glimpse of what is in store for you. When you experience deep relaxation, you think “Wow! That was great. I never thought relaxation could be so profound and blissful.” Guided meditation is a preparatory step on the journey to silent meditation. People sometimes ask me to describe the feeling after a session. I have to pause: can it be adequately described? Can you describe the taste of chocolate? You might say it is sweet. You might say it is rich. But the only way to truly know is to taste it. Come experience the taste of chocolate for yourself!

Meditation enhances positivity and decreases stress and
negative thinking. Research also shows it increases the ability to concentrate, mental focus and memory. Meditation has proven physical benefits, as well. When we change our mind, we change our body; recent neurological studies show this is literally true. Researchers are demonstrating that meditation can be a powerful, even essential ally in healing, recovering, and correcting a
great variety of physical conditions. Through a determined practice of meditation, one can learn to redirect and refocus neurological activity. Studies actually show increases in brain signaling connections and protective tissue. In other words, with meditation, we are not feeling better just because we spent some time relaxing; we are physically healing our bodies.

A teacher can instruct in techniques, help you focus and let go, show you what to look for and where, and act as a conduit to the meditative state.

Bharat Kalra, LMT conducts Guided Meditation sessions at various locations in NW Chicago. His goal is to help people learn to relax and allow the body to heal itself. He is also a practicing massage therapist. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

THE IMPORTANCE OF DETOXING YOUR BODY by Dr. Alberto Villoldo Every day, we are exposed to contaminants in our food, water and air that did not exist 100 years ago. These toxins wreak havoc in our bodies, interfering with the many delicate systems that keep us healthy, functional, and alive. The toxins in our environment do more than damage our bodies—they interfere with our ability to raise the quality of our Luminous Energy Field (LEF) making it difficult to readily experience unity with all creation. Today, our chances of enjoying a long and healthy life such as our ancestors once did are greatly diminished. In fact, we are 99% certain to suffer and die from the diseases of civilization: cancer, heart disease and dementia. Only 1% of us will die of old age. The good news is we can change this. When we combine an ancient shamanic healing discipline with cutting-edge neuroscience, we can actually heal disease before it manifests in the body. We can reprogram our biological destiny so we don’t have to relive the illnesses and dramas that run in our families. We can create extraordinary health for the rest of our lives. Years ago, as a young medical anthropologist with a research grant from a large Swiss pharmaceutical company, I spent months in the Amazon looking for a breakthrough cure for cancer, heart disease or dementia. What I found was that these diseases did not exist in the indigenous communities I visited. It was extraordinary. What did these people know about healthy living that we did not? They knew three things: they knew you had to detox the body; they knew you had to upgrade the quality of the energy field so you could upgrade the body; and they knew you had to practice forgiveness in order to heal your emotions. These are the three pillars of the ancient healing methodologies which we call One Spirit Medicine.

SO, HOW DO YOU DETOX YOUR BODY? The detox begins in your kitchen. Clear out all junk food, sports drinks, fruit juices and sodas. Read labels and toss anything that has ingredients you can’t pronounce. Eliminate everything that is processed, contains preservatives, coloring or additives, and, most importantly, sugar. One hundred years ago, the average American ate five pounds of sugar per year. Today we are eating 26

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018

200 pounds of refined sugars and another 180 pounds of refined grains that turn into sugars as they enter the bloodstream. In addition to processed foods, you’ll need to avoid the most common substances that cause inflammation: Gluten-containing products such as wheat, rye, barley and malt in its various forms. The body does not recognize the gluten protein, which produces inflammation. Foods containing gluten quickly turn into sugar—one slice of toast raises your blood sugar more quickly than a tablespoon of sugar. Some people are more sensitive to gluten than others—sensitivity indicators include brain fog, headaches, fatigue, joint pain, poor sleep, digestive problems and leaky gut. Dairy products (cheese, yogurt, milk) are likewise on the list of detox no-nos. Most people are either allergic or sensitive to dairy—as indicated by acne, asthma, runny nose, stuffy sinuses and eczema. Eggs, beans, hydrogenated oils or refined vegetable oils like corn, sunflower, soybean or canola also need to be cleared out. Finally, you need to eliminate chocolate, which contains added sugar. Although you can hold on to pure cocoa and add it to your morning smoothie if desired. The next step is to start eating real food (a primarily plantbased diet) and abstain from all foods that turn into sugar for 18 hours each day. Eat a lot of fruits, veggies, potatoes, rice, etc. And, remember that alcohol also converts to sugar. As you start to reclaim your biology, you access the higher neural networks in the brain and begin to understand your life journey within a much broader spiritual context. Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., is author of the upcoming book Grow a New Body. Taking a cue from the remote shamanic communities of the Andes and the Amazon—with whom he studied for decades—Villoldo delved into the blue zones of the world where the healthiest and longest living people on our planet reside. [REVIEW OF HEALING MODALITIES]

LIGHT THERAPY FOR SELF-CARE by Bridget Juister Technology and science have come a long way to harness the positive effect of light for therapeutic purposes. In 1967, Endre Mester discovered that a low-level beam of light had the capacity to stimulate hair growth and wound repair in mice. Laser technology has since become commonplace in the surgical and clinical arena. Fifty years later, light-emitting diodes (LED) devices are available and safe for clinic and home use. Light wavelengths and pulse technology combine to target tissues at different levels. Light therapy stimulates our own natural healing capabilities in a process called photobiomodulation (PBM.1) Low-level Light Therapy (LLLT) or PBM offers a gentle, noninvasive means to repair, restore and stimulate cellular activity critical for reducing inflammation and promoting health. Red, blue and infrared light wavelengths penetrate varying depths of tissue to increase circulation and stimulate ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) synthesis. Understanding the cascade of events at the molecular level explains why light therapy is useful for a variety of health concerns, including pain syndromes, brain disorders and dermatological conditions, to name a few. Pain management is reduced by increased circulation to decrease inflammation. The process begins at the mitochondrial level. Absorption of photons by the cell’s “powerhouse” mitochondria trigger the release of nitric oxide and promote ATP synthesis. An increase of nitric oxide in the blood helps relax the arteries, fight free radicals and cause vasodilation which decreases blood pressure. This increase of blood flow and oxygen to the blood helps reduce inflammation for acute and chronic pain conditions, making it a safe option for pain management.2 Applying the lights over the eyes, the forehead or with a “light cap” penetrates through the skull to access the brain tissue. LLLT has promising potential to treat traumatic brain injury, PTSD, stroke rehabilitation, clinical depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.3 PBM is a promising treatment option for traumatic and degenerative brain conditions—not only because of increased mitochondrial activity, ATP production, increased blood flow and oxygen, but because light activates signaling pathways and gene transcription factors responsible for changes in protein

expression. These pathways are responsible for a complex array of activity including DNA synthesis and repair, cellular proliferation and migration and increased enzyme activity; all of which are essential for restoring and promoting healthy tissue. This activity has a lasting effect which means photobiomodulation continues to take place even after the lights have been removed.3 The ability of light to rejuvenate and restore healthy tissues, make it effective for dermatological conditions including burns, wounds, psoriasis, acne and for anti-aging. When light is absorbed and the signaling pathways activate to repair and restore tissue, stem cells are also promoted that assist in tissue repair and wound healing and rejuvenation. There is also clinical evidence that light therapy helps to recover damage from UV radiation.4 LED light therapy devices are easy to use and create a pleasant and relaxing experience. Using them on a regular basis at home offers a wonderful way to incorporate quality quiet time for stress management. The flexible pad system makes it easy to apply lights to several areas at the same time—whether it’s for pain, skin care or brain health. Light therapy is deemed safe for the elderly, children and even the family pet.5 Light is life. We are light. Our bodies are equipped with powerful self-healing properties at the molecular level to help manage our biggest health challenges. The safe, non-invasive nature of light therapy, and the lack of side effects make light therapy a legitimate option for clinicians and also as a personal health management tool for the whole family. Bridget Juister is a licensed acupuncturist and light therapist at B Holistic in Hinsdale, IL. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Loyola University and a Master’s of Oriental Medicine from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. THE ART OF MANAGING ANGER WITH YOGA by Raquel Jex Forsgren, Yoga Therapist, C-IAYT

Anger. A powerful emotion. Everyone feels anger at some point. We all feel it uniquely. Yet, our bodies experience it nearly identically. Feeling angry is an example of how we create our own suffering because of what we perceive, how we perceive it, and the way we react to it. I’d be remiss saying that ALL feelings of anger are unhealthy. Feeling short episodes of anger periodically are normal and part of being human! Anger can create a sense of urgency to get something done—to make an important or big life change, such as modifying our lifestyle to manage 28

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018

a disease, losing weight, or leaving an unhealthy relationship or job. The essential ingredient to overall health and wellness is our ability to be self-aware about WHAT we get angry about and HOW we manage that anger.

WHY DO WE GET ANGRY? We feel we’ve been wronged. Someone does or says something to us and we take it personally. It might be personal, yet most times, it’s not. It’s about what that person is going through. Someone cuts us off in traffic—we wave our hands at them thinking that they

planned to slam on their brakes or cut us off. In reality, they likely had a fight with someone, or maybe they just lost their job or a loved one. We are upset with ourselves. We beat ourselves up for what we just did or said. How often have you been angry at yourself for being short with your spouse or child? We chastise ourselves for not being nice enough or for accidentally cutting the person off on the expressway while we were thinking about that fight with our mother earlier that morning. What about a diagnosis with a disease that we have or a family

member has? Anger often arises when we can’t control what has happened.

WHAT DOES ANGER DO TO OUR BODIES? Anger triggers the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response. The adrenal glands flood the body with stress hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol. The brain shunts blood away from our gut, towards the muscles, in preparation for physical exertion. Heart rate, blood pressure and respiration increase, body temperature rises, and we perspire. The mind sharpens and focuses. Over time our health can begin to suffer in different ways. The constant flood of stress chemicals and associated metabolic changes can devastate our bodily systems. Some of the health problems linked to anger left unmanaged include headache, digestion issues, insomnia, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke.

HOW CAN WE USE YOGA TO HELP US MANAGE OUR ANGER IN A HEALTHY WAY? Yoga increases our self-awareness. It helps us notice emotions and thoughts that arise at that moment, encouraging us to be curious about them. We learn to ask ourselves, what am I angry about? Where do I feel it in my body? Literally, sit with anger. Let it be uncomfortable. Let your heart pound. Let your hands shake. What is the worst thing that is going to happen? Allow the anger to be witnessed. In fact, try the technique below when your mind and body feel flooded with anger. Then notice and ask yourself, “where in my body do I feel anger now?” By the time you’ve asked yourself all of these questions, you may be surprised to see that it may not be there anymore or may have shifted to another place. Not only have you “leaned into” your anger, but you also created a relaxation response to balance your nervous system all on your own! Close your eyes. Notice HOW and WHERE you are breathing. Notice

WHERE you are feeling the strongest sensations in your body. Take 10 full rounds of breaths, exhaling just a little longer than inhaling. Then notice the overarching emotion that you are feeling, notice after the rounds of breathing, where you feel it in your body, and say the words to yourself “I am leaning INTO this emotion.” Mindfulness will help you change your behavior. Try this simple technique the next time someone cuts you off—either driving, in a meeting or otherwise. Before you tell yourself that “they did that on purpose,” try saying to yourself, “I wonder what they must be going through right now to act like that or do that.” As you keep practicing this, you will break the habit of responding and reacting in the way you have been. Your commute will be better, you’ll lower your anxiety about going into meetings, and over time, you will feel

different each day because your stress hormones begin to stay lower longer. Remember, if we can control our mind, breath, and our own reactions to things, we can and will heal our own suffering because we can manage our anger. COSMIC DAILY WEATHER October 2018 by Bernadette Evans

Overview I’d like to say thank you to Kasia Szumal, publisher of Conscious Community Magazine, for welcoming me into the family, as well as a huge thank you to Tara Aal for all her support, encouragement and for passing the torch to me. I know I have big shoes to fill and I will do my best to meet the bar she has set. I am thrilled and honored to share my astrological knowledge and my thoughts with you, the readers. October brings the end of the harvest, at least for the farmers in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s a time of celebrating with family and friends the bounty for which everyone has worked so hard. While we celebrate the end of the growing season, just as the land is going to sleep for a few months, our bodies instinctively slow down, preparing for the coming winter as the days get shorter and the nights get longer. It’s a natural progression for our bodies when they experience less light to want to hibernate and be indoors more. One way to nourish ourselves is by making soup with vegetables 30

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018

from our gardens or from the farmer’s markets to warm our bellies. Hallowe’en (Samhain,) a favorite holiday, for kids of all ages, is upon us. It’s a time to dress up and play—to pretend we’re someone else for a night. Some believe the veil between this world and the next thins on this night and that spirits walk more freely among us. It was believed that if you were born on the eve of Samhain you may have the gift of second sight or clairvoyance. One of the biggest transits for the month of October is that Venus will be going retrograde. She does this about every 18 months for 40 days. This time she will just be getting into Scorpio when she retrogrades back into Libra. When Venus retrogrades, it is a great time to review and re-evaluate our relationships, our love life, how we make money and what we value. Astrology is a tool that can guide us by explaining the energies that we’re dealing with

on a daily basis. It can give us insights into ourselves, our friends, family and co-workers. When consciously working with the energy of the planets, we can enjoy the easier days as well as prepare ourselves for the more challenging days. Our own chart is a snapshot of the Universe of when and where we were born, our own personal blueprint. It can help you discover your strengths and assist you in understanding more about yourself. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete her orbit through the twelve signs, approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is Void-of-Course, (VoC), it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets until it leaves the sign it’s in. At these times, it can be difficult to get focused and accomplish tasks; you may want to relax, meditate or do something where your focus is directed inward. Don’t try to get a big project off the ground when the moon is void. If you want to find out more about the void-of-course moon, check out www.moontracks.com.

Monday, October 1 With the Moon in Cancer, you may want to stay closer to home as you could be feeling more vulnerable and sensitive. Remember to be kind and nurturing to yourself. Gemini Moon VoC ends at 1:00 p.m. when the Moon enters Cancer.

Tuesday, October 2 With the last quarter Moon in Cancer and Mercury squaring Pluto, you could be feeling sensitive. Take care when talking with friends and loved ones, so you don’t take things personally or say something that may cause hurt feelings.

Wednesday, October 3 When Saturn trines Uranus, you can harness your imagination by thinking outside the box. These futuristic ideas can be implemented in a practical and concrete manner. Cancer VoC begins at 3:33 a.m. and ends at 4:12 p.m. when the Moon enters Leo.

Thursday, October 4 If you feel you’re not appreciated for all that you do, the Moon-Mars opposition may bring up anger. Sure, you like to think of everyone, but sometimes you need to be recognized for your contributions.

Friday, October 5

tunes or practicing yoga? Virgo, after all, is the sign associated with health. Virgo VoC Moon begins at 9:02 a.m. and ends at 8:09 p.m. when the Moon enters Libra.

Sit quietly and listen for the answers. Sagittarius VoC begins at 7:58 p.m.

Monday, October 8

You could be feeling ambitious and ready to get some needed work done when the Moon enters Capricorn at 2:17 p.m. Some unexpected help may arrive in the afternoon when the Moon trines Uranus.

The New Moon at 10:46 p.m. in Libra is a time of new beginnings, particularly in our relationships. Where could you apply some diplomacy and fairness in your relationships? What might you do to bring balance and harmony into our lives? The New Moon is a great time to plant the seeds of what you want to create for the next month.

Tuesday, October 9 Mercury changes signs and moves into Scorpio today at 7:40 p.m. A time for uncovering and expressing our deepest desires and passions. Libra VoC begins at 3:50 a.m. and ends at 11:09 p.m. when the Moon enters Scorpio.

Wednesday, October 10 Venus square Mars may emphasize some volatility in your relationships. How do you normally relate to this individual? Is there another way to look at the situation besides losing your temper? Go for a walk or exercise to let off steam.

Thursday, October 11

Venus in Scorpio turns retrograde today at 2:04 pm and will be retrograde for six weeks. By re-evaluating your relationships how might they transform? You’re being asked to go deep and see what treasures you come up with. Leo VoC begins at 6:33 a.m. and is there most of the day. The Moon enters Virgo at 6:19 p.m.

The Moon is trining Neptune and then conjuncting Jupiter, so tap into the sensitive and psychic currents of the day by using your intuition and creativity or by delving into something deep and mysterious. You may need some alone time to hear the whispers of your soul. Scorpio VoC Moon begins at 6:12 p.m. where it stays the rest of the day.

Saturday, October 6

Friday, October 12

Is there a project you want to get done today? Today’s Virgo Moon helps you get your plans in order. Have you written out all the details for your big presentation, or are you busy tidying up your workspace first?

When the Moon is in Sagittarius, you may want to be playful and adventurous while also maintaining your independence. You may feel someone or something is trying to control you with the Sun Squaring Pluto. Scorpio VoC ends at 4:52 a.m. when it enters Sagittarius.

Sunday, October 7 The Moon is void for most of the day, so why not focus on your body by enjoying a walk in nature, dancing to your favorite

Saturday, October 13 The Moon-Neptune square may have you questioning yourself and your dreams.

Sunday, October 14

Monday, October 15 The urge to express yourself and your values passionately, intensely and possibly obsessively, is magnified when MercuryVenus get cozy today by conjunction. What do you need to say in your relationships? Can you express it without controlling the thread of the conversation?

Tuesday, October 16 There could be some tensions today when the Moon and Sun form a square. Your desire to get along with others is challenged by your need to finish the tasks at hand. Capricorn VoC begins at 4:49 p.m. and is void the rest of the day.

Wednesday, October 17 The Moon enters Aquarius at 2:36 a.m. When the Moon is in Aquarius, you are more likely to follow the beat of your own drum and your beat may sound a whole lot different than everyone else’s. There is a desire to be rebellious and free as you may also be feeling restless when the Moon squares Uranus.

Thursday, October 18 When the Moon conjuncts Mars, you could be irritable and say something you’re going to regret or act impulsively. Why not try using this energy to bravely follow your heart and do something that brings you joy!

Friday, October 19 Your mind may be going a million miles per hour as Mercury squares Mars. You could also have a very sharp tongue that skewers anyone who doesn’t agree with you. Be open to other viewpoints. Instead, use your razor-sharp mind to work on solutions together. Aquarius VoC begins at 7:27 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m. when it enters Pisces. Saturday, October 20 With the Moon in Pisces, it’s a perfect day for dreaming and creating. By day, explore your imagination and see what bubbles up to the surface; by night, snuggle up with someone you love and watch a movie.

Sunday, October 21 The dreamy Pisces Moon continues today along with other flowing aspects to the Moon. Paint a picture, do some journaling, have a bath scented with essential oils and surrounded by candles. You get the picture. Pisces VoC begins at 6:47 p.m.

Monday, October 22 We’ve left behind the slower Pisces Moon and now entered Aries territory. When the Moon travels through the sign of Aries, it gives you the extra zip to get moving. You can feel energetic or wired. Use your vitality to go for a run or to follow your passions. Moon enters Aries at 1:58 a.m.

Tuesday, October 23 Happy Birthday, Scorpio! Scorpio begins its yearly journey through the zodiac for

the next month. The Sun-Uranus opposition can bring in an unexpected surprise, either in the shape of an event or in the form of a person. You may also be feeling restless—wondering how you can break free. Tap into the independent energy of the day and try something you’ve always wanted to do! Aries VoC begins at 1:18 p.m. and is void for the rest of the day.

Wednesday, October 24 Moon enters Taurus at 9:33 a.m. The Full Moon is at 11:45 a.m. This is a time when you may want to focus on what you want to let go of—what needs to be released. Decluttering and clearing your space are ways you can release excess stuff, which could give you some much-needed breathing room. You never know what this simple act of clearing could be making room for in your life.

Thursday, October 25 Feelings and emotions can be heightened when the Moon squares Mars. Be conscious when communicating that you don’t hurt someone’s feelings; there’s also the possibility of being hurt by someone else’s careless words. Instead of reacting impulsively today, slow down and pay attention to how you’re feeling and remember that everyone is going through something, so be kind.

Friday, October 26 The Sun-Venus conjunction can give us a warm-hearted and likable persona. When the two of them are hanging out together in Scorpio, they add the element of wanting transformative relationships—superficial partners need not apply. Taurus VoC begins 9:49 a.m. and ends at 2:41 p.m. when it enters Gemini.

Saturday, October 27 When the Moon is in Gemini, it’s a fun, light social day—a time of chit-chat, storytelling and humorous anecdotes. Playing, exploring and learning are the themes at this time; nothing too heavy, please. Gemini VoC begins at 11:37 p.m.

Sunday, October 28 You might want to just relax today as the Moon is void most of the day until

it enters Cancer at 6:27 p.m. When the Moon does enter Cancer, you can become a homebody or want to be surrounded by the people you think of as family. It can be a time of sharing a lovely home-cooked meal and good conversation. “Do whatever nurtures you,” says the Moon in Cancer.

Monday, October 29 You may feel optimistic and in a good frame of mind when Mercury conjuncts Jupiter. It’s a fabulous day to meet friends for coffee. Or, you could decide it’s a great time to learn something new. Of course, Mercury and Jupiter are both in Scorpio, so the conversations could be quite deep and introspective and the new class you decide to take may have an esoteric bent.

Tuesday, October 30 You may be feeling extra sensitive when the Moon trines Jupiter; your feelings are exaggerated whatever that feeling may be. So, be conscious of being overly moody and know that it will pass very quickly. Cancer VoC begins at 9:31 p.m. and ends at 9:42 p.m. when it enters Leo. Mercury enters the sign of Sagittarius at 11:38 p.m. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, a fire sign, it is very quick. Inspiration/enthusiasm/conversation is expressed with higher ideals and long-term objectives in mind. There’s also a chance of being very blunt when Mercury is in Sagittarius.

Wednesday, October 31 There may be some unexpected shakeups in your relationships today and that’s not always a bad thing. It could be an unexpected turn of events in your associations that brings in someone new or takes someone out (if it’s time to let them go.) Venus opposing Uranus asks us to look at all these possibilities as well as watching what we do with our money. Be careful of “get-rich” schemes. Have a very Happy Hallowe’en everyone. Venus Retrograding back into Libra at 2:42 p.m.

[ORGANIC GARDENING]

TUMBLING OVER TOMATOES by Sue Odland Tomatoes! They’re everywhere this time of year. As temperatures drop and days grow shorter, these amazing gems of the garden continue to reveal their glorious tastes and shades. This time of year can be especially gratifying for gardeners, yet it can also be challenging when faced with an abundance of tomatoes or an early first frost. For those stumbling over branches and bushels filled with tomatoes, experiment with these time-tested options for easily capturing these productive fruits: Olleva Holt (known as Mamo to her many generations of family),
created the following delicious tomato juice mixture in the 1920’s. This memorable recipe was passed on to me by her granddaughter many years ago. It continues to be a top request at every fall gathering.

MAMO’S TOMATO COCKTAIL JUICE Fill a 6-8 quart stainless steel stock pot
with any size or variety of fresh tomatoes,
2 large white onions, cubed,
2 teaspoons mustard seed,
1 teaspoon celery seed,
1 teaspoon tabasco sauce - option: add more for spicier flavor,
1⁄2 cup sugar option: reduce quantity, omit or use sweetener substitute Bring the first 4 ingredients to a boil in the pot, then reduce to medium heat, cook until tomatoes are soft. Pour cooked juice mixture through a colander. Return juice to stock pot. Add tabasco and sugar. Boil 15 minutes. Serve or pour into jars. Makes 7 quarts. The juice can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks or canned for longer shelf life. Refer to the Ball Blue Book of Preserving or Rodale’s Preserving Summer’s Bounty to learn traditional canning and preserving techniques. Both are informative, easy-to-follow resources for new and seasoned cooks alike. For those who are not ready to bid farewell to fresh tomatoes, consider the following methods to ripen tomatoes indoors before a first frost covers the garden. Remember that when ripening indoors, a temperature of 65-70 degrees is more important than light for tomatoes to ripen. Paper Bag - Before the first frost, place loose, green or ripening tomatoes in a large paper bag. Make sure that tomatoes are dry

before placing them into the bag. Close the bag and place in a location that is within the 65-70 degree range. Check the bag every few days; pick out ripened tomatoes. Shelf - Place individual green or ripening tomatoes on a dark shelf in your home. Cover the tomatoes with a sheet of newspaper. Check every few days; remove ripened tomatoes. Basement - Bring in the whole tomato plant to ripen in a cool basement. Dig up the tomato plant including the roots and shake off any excess soil. Hang the plant upside down in a basement, using twine or string. Check plant every few days to pluck off ripened tomatoes. These later ripened tomatoes are not always as juicy as their traditionally ripened counterparts, but they are more flavorful and satisfying than the store-bought variety. Finally, if football games or pumpkin patches squeeze out spare time for preserving garden produce, remember that you can donate your extra nutritious offerings to your local food pantry or church to help your neighbors in need. The rich taste, color and texture of home-grown tomatoes are intrinsically woven into the tapestry of our memories. Let these treasures shine on your harvest table this year. [HEARTh & HOME]

BETTER FOR YOU RAMEN Miso and Green Onions by Janae Jean October is the half-way point for the fall semester at most colleges and universities. Students are in the midst of studying hard for midterms and midnight snacks become meals. For this fall semester, here are two healthful variations on the college dorm room classic ramen noodles. Ramen is traditionally a Japanese soup that consists of Chinese-style wheat noodles served in broth that is flavored with soy sauce or miso. Common ingredients include pork, eggs, dried seaweed and green onions. For these recipes, both of our ramens are plant-based and gluten-free. The Varsity Vegetable Ramen does not have noodles with spaghetti squash fulfilling that role. Both soups are flavored with gluten-free miso and feature green onions. Miso is made of fermented soybeans. It is packed with essential minerals and is a good source of B vitamins, folic acid, as well as vitamins E and K. As a fermented food, it provides healthful probiotics. Green onions are rich in vitamins K, C and A which increase bone health, fight heart disease and boost immunity. They also provide a significant amount of dietary fiber and folate.

VARSITY VEGETABLE RAMEN 32 ounces vegetable broth 4 cups water 4 tablespoons light miso paste 2 green onions, chopped 1/3 cup white onion, chopped

2 watermelon radishes, chopped 1 bell pepper, chopped 2 mini sweet peppers, sliced 1 small zucchini, chopped 2-6 dried red chilis 1 tablespoon minced garlic ¼-pound oyster mushrooms 1/3 of a head of cabbage, chopped ¼ cup cilantro, chopped 1 cup heirloom carrots, julienned ½ roasted spaghetti squash (see below) Salt to taste Boil water, broth and miso. Add all of the ingredients except the spaghetti squash and mushrooms. Turn to low heat and simmer until radishes are tender (about 30 minutes.) Place about one cup of spaghetti squash “noodles” into soup bowl. Ladle soup over top. Garnish with mushrooms. Serve immediately.

ROASTED SPAGHETTI SQUASH Preheat oven to 400°F. Slice spaghetti squash lengthwise and scoop out seeds. (Seeds may be set aside and roasted like pumpkin seeds for a snack packed with plant-based protein.) I am a new reader of Conscious Community Magazine, and wanted to drop a line to say I am pleasantly surprised. After becoming spiritually awakened 4 years ago, I was excited to meet with people in my own circle that are experiencing the same wondrous thing. One of my dear friends dropped this magazine on my desk one morning and at first I did not pick it up to read, for whatever reason doesn’t matter. A few days later I did pick it up...page after page...encouraging and enlightening. — Signed New reader!

Keep up the fantastic work with Conscious Community. Your changes and upgrades continue to bring soooooo much more to the magazine and I’m always interested to see what’s next with the platform as a whole. — Peter T.
