PUBLISHER’S LETTER

LIFE-CHANGING PRACTICES Mindfulness and Gratitude

I

am so excited to share our November issue with you because it is all about two life-changing practices—mindfulness and gratitude. These two powerful words can change not only your life’s experience for the better but also change your consciousness. The first time that I heard the word “mindfulness” was in 2012 when I became the Circulation Manager for Conscious Community Magazine, (Formerly The Monthly Aspectarian). The first month working at the magazine was very overwhelming for me. I knew that I needed to contact writers for articles and contact advertisers for ads and much more. There were hundreds of phone calls to make to get the magazine to print on time. My mind was full of ideas and projects to do. I could not calm down my mind in the evening before I went to bed, and I was going to sleep around 3 a.m. from being exhausted from my thinking. I realized that I needed to find something to clear my mind.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

At the same time I started working at The Monthly Aspectarian, a Bikram Yoga studio opened in the same building. I did not know what kind of yoga Bikram was, but I decided that I would try anything to calm my mind. For people who do not know, Bikram yoga is a style of hot yoga where you do 26 postures twice in a room heated to 105ºF. During the class, the teacher said something like, “First timers be mindful of your practice and stay in the class ‘til the end of the class.” Right away, I noticed that it was really hot and I couldn’t stop sweating. My mind started finding all these excuses to leave the room. I think my mantra for that yoga practice was “It is so hot here.” But, I stayed in the room for a whole practice. After a few practices, I noticed my thoughts really disappeared, and I was more present with my body. I started sleeping like a baby, and I was waking up fresh for my daily tasks. Today, I continue to practice Bikram yoga, and I am so grateful for this practice in my life. For more about mindfulness and its importance, read Jakeb Brock’s article The Importance of Practicing Mindfulness and Georgia Jones’ article Mindfulness: Toward Freedom from Anxiety and Depression. On Thursday, Nov. 22, we will be celebrating Thanksgiving in the US. It is the time of year when we gather around the table and share food with family members and friends. It is a time of the year when we express gratitude for the things we have and the experiences that we’ve gone through this past year. Gratitude is a very powerful action, which we can take every day of our lives, that brings us closer to the things we want. By saying, “Thank you,” we are letting the Universe or God/Goddess know that we love our lives, and we want more good things to happen. For more about Gratitude you can read our interview with legendary journalist and hostess, Sally Quinn, Gatherings and Gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving all year around! The Best,

Kasia Szumal

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q: I’ve been seeing a woman to whom I’m very attracted, but she’s fearful about getting into a relationship after her husband cheated on her years ago. I’d like to get more involved, but I’m wondering if I’m wasting my time. Do you have any advice? — Gentleman-in-Waiting A: Dear Gentleman-in-Waiting, These days, relationships seem to move along at extraordinary speeds. Dating and courtship seem to have fallen by the wayside. Sometimes sex comes far too soon, which can distort and color our perspective on what’s happening between ourselves and the other person. This distortion can muddy the waters, breed a lack of clarity and create unconscious projections. We each have our own pace at which we heal. I understand why her fear looms large, because such betrayals blindside us. It upsets our equilibrium which often causes us to personalize it, questioning our worth, looks, what we did wrong, and more. We need proper time to contemplate, so we can sort through the fragments of our shattered lives, process what we’ve been through and figure out the roles we played in that relationship. This enables us to be personally accountable while coming to an understanding of which faults should be left at the feet of the adulterous partner. Just because someone cheated on us does not mean that our imperfections forced them into that act.

Even once emotional agony recedes, new companions can unexpectedly trigger old relationship dynamics, which need to be realized and worked through, and that can take some time and patience. If this woman means a lot to you, I’d recommend that you tell her— without pressure—why she feels so special to you, what your thoughts and feelings are, and where you’d like to be with her eventually. Create a safe space for her to honestly share her thoughts and fears so you can genuinely understand the nuances of what she’s struggling with to gain your own clarity. Hopefully, she’s clear and feels secure enough to authentically share, so you can ascertain the potential obstacles ahead and whether you’re willing to walk beside her for a bit. It can be difficult to find a mate who’s a really good match and when we do, sometimes we need to exercise patience and be discerning. Over time, if we know ourselves well, our mind and body will signal if it’s taking too long, because internal stress will begin building. If we’re staying in good communication, we should have a sense of how things are flowing, and whether we wish to continue on. When we feel we can’t wait any longer, we can be honest so the other can decide whether they can shift things up to keep us close, or whether they’re still not ready. In case of the latter, hopefully, the journey deepened between us enough to continue on with a friendship built on commonalities, trust, and good communication, because those are rare gems.

My counsel for dating is to slow down. We should get to know each other before entering into intimacy, so that we can truly know and trust who we’re connecting with. When we finally enter into those relationships, we’ll better know that person and have much more of a bond, instead of basing those relationships strictly on looks, lust or status. Q: I’m a stay-at-home mom who has to ask my husband for money to do special things. It makes me feel bad about myself and resentful towards him. Do you have any suggestions? —“Husband-May-I?” A: Dear “Husband-May-I?”, Most wives would dislike the thought of having to approach their husbands to ask for money to spend a weekend with their girlfriends or buy something special. This sets up unbalanced roles similar to parent and child, which can affect spousal intimacy. Since we all have differing viewpoints as to the value of experiences and purchases, when possible, both spouses should have their own small stash of mad money independent of the family budget. I suggest you discuss this with your husband. He probably hasn’t even considered what this feels like, because he’s not the one in the situation. You should have control of some of your own money which would allow you to make decisions on how to spend it, without him deciding whether it’s a valid way for you to spend money. See if you both can agree upon a monthly stipend that allows you to spend it or save it up according to what feels right to you. Bringing balance to this situation will make you a content, more independent feeling wife, which will serve him well in many ways, both known and unknown Alecia Rice integrates higher concepts with wisdom to bring forth balance, perspective, and clarity. She’s a personal advisor, speaker, and gatherer of women. For perspective on life issues, you’re invited to text questions and comments to 681-321-1109. GATHERINGS AND GRATITUDE Interview with Sally Quinn

by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter

For this interview, we had the honor of spending an hour conversing with author and journalist, Sally Quinn. Sally was a longtime Washington Post writer, columnist, television commentator, Washington insider, legendary hostess and founder of the website, On Faith from The Washington Post. Sally and Benjamin Bradlee, executive editor for The Washington Post, were married from 1978 until his death in 2014. Her son, Quinn Bradlee, is a filmmaker, author and advocate for disabled people. Sally currently writes for several publications and has authored several books including The Party: A Guide to Adventurous Entertaining and her recent memoir, Finding Magic: A Spiritual Memoir. We spoke with her about gatherings, authenticity, gratitude, labyrinths, and more. To stay informed about Sally, follow her on twitter @sallyquinndc. 12

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2018

The following is only a small part of our in-depth conversation with Sally. To hear the rest of our conversation, download or stream the podcast episode. Don’t forget to subscribe, like, review and share the Conscious Community Podcast on your preferred podcatcher app. Janae: What do you feel that magic is? In past interviews, we’ve discussed how magic is a word for things we don’t understand yet. What do you think about that definition? What is your personal definition? Sally: The title of my book is Finding Magic: A Spiritual Memoir. The reason that I called it that was that I think that there is magic everywhere in our lives. People think of magic and they think of witches, sorcery, spells and hexes and that sort of thing. That’s a part of magic. Then there’s magic tricks and magicians. I think of it as something transcendent. Magic is an idea, and it’s also a frame of mind. It’s exhilarating. You find magic in all the things that happen in your everyday life.

Spencer: This reminds me of a past guest, Ian Simkins’ ongoing project, “Beauty in the Common.” It’s all centered around the really beautiful, simple things, such as sharing a meal with your family. So, they will come together and share a meal or have a sing-along. The meaning of life, if there is one, is celebrating little, simple things. People overthink it sometimes and miss the forest for the trees. It’s those little moments of beauty that give life magic and meaning. SQ: I did a column for The Washington Post a number of years ago that I only did for the holidays, starting with Halloween, then Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, I called it The Sacred Table. For me, the table is sacred. There is nothing that I think is more magical and more wonderful than gathering your close friends, people you really love. I try not to have people who I do not like at my table. [All laugh.] Sometimes that’s hard, but I try really hard. I always have candles because I think candles create magic, and if it’s in the winter, I have a fire. I have lots of good wine. The food does not have to be spectacular. Often people will say, “Oh, I can’t entertain. It makes me too nervous; I don’t have the confidence to entertain.” I say to them, “Look, have you ever had a friend come over for a cup of coffee and sit in your kitchen?” “Well, yeah.” “Well, that’s entertaining!” It doesn’t have to be a grand dinner. I’m not a great cook, and a lot of times it’s carry-out. People don’t care. You put it on the buffet or pantry and people serve themselves. What matters is the conversation and the sense of community and camaraderie. So, in terms of entertaining, I love having people over. I really love it, and my friends like coming to my house, because they know they are going to have a good time. They know that it’s a safe house. I always want my friends to leave my house feeling honored and exhilarated. I want them to levitate. I want them to fly out of the house thinking they’re great, wonderful and have been honored, featured, loved, cared about, that there’s so much affection for them, and that there’s been laughter and tears sometimes. They’ve been enriched in some way by sitting around a table and exchanging ideas, thoughts and feelings. JJ: I think that what you’re hitting on is how important it is to be authentic with your friends or others. Authenticity is what makes someone connect with a book or a newsperson. You want to know that they are sincere and it’s coming from their heart. Have you noticed this as a journalist?

they are phonies, but they are afraid to show who they really are. What I consider my job when I’m doing an interview is to get them to take that mask off and show who they really are. JJ: At Conscious Community Magazine, we often focus on mindfulness, and you have a mindfulness practice that we both enjoy, walking the labyrinth. Would you like to share your experience with labyrinths? SQ: People call it a “maze” because it looks like a maze. But, it’s different from a maze because in a maze, you’re supposed to get lost, but with the labyrinth, you get found. God knows, there are so many people who have terrible problems in this world. Sometimes I feel guilty about talking about ever feeling depressed, sad or stressed, when there are people getting killed or raped or other problems all over the world. My problems are nothing in the scheme of things. But, it doesn’t mean that we don’t suffer because other people suffer more than we do. I feel grateful, and I know that gratitude has gotten to be a cliché now. Everybody’s grateful for this or grateful for that. But, it really works for me. When I go to bed at night, I always think about what I have to be grateful for—even if I’m sad about something or upset about something that happened to me. And, in the morning, I wake up and think “What do I have to be grateful for?” If you really think that way about being grateful and being peaceful, it works. Janae Jean serves as editor, social media manager, recipe columnist and podcaster for Conscious Community Magazine. She has an extensive background in new media and music education. She is also the founder of Perennial Music and Arts, an arts education and healing center based in downtown Geneva, IL. SQ: I used to do a lot of interviews for the paper. I mean written interviews. Now I mostly do interviews in front of live audiences, and you can smell a phony a mile away. [Laughs.] When people start telling you things about themselves that aren’t true, you just know it and the audience feels it too. The audience gets it. I can almost feel myself backing away from someone who is not being authentic. One of the things I do when I’m doing interviews is to try to figure out who the person is. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

TEENAGE ANXIETY IS OFF THE CHARTS Westmont, IL - 2018-2019 by Theresa Puskar “Anxiety is the aspect of our fear that looks to the future, anticipating potential problems and dangers.” — Jessica Moore

As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, I have been teaching as a substitute for over a year now, and I am troubled by the anxiety that our teens are experiencing. Thus, this month’s All About Town column will not be a review of a local consciousness-raising event, but an exploration of this issue and potential solutions. Many of today’s teens feel overwhelmed and stressed to a breaking point. I have spoken to several who have been institutionalized for nervous breakdowns, addiction recovery or self-harming intervention. What creates promise is how honest and open they are about their history, their feelings and their experiences. As I reflect back to my teen years, I see very little parallel with the issues they currently face. While social matters like bullying and alienation existed, we had so much more personal space. Without cellphones, laptops and the constant barrage of media interference in our psyches, there was downtime; alone time. We did not have to be “turned on and tapped in” 24/7, and ultra-responsive to all that was going on around us. For example, when a fellow student had a party that I wasn’t invited to, I was not inundated with nonstop photos, videos and texts extolling how much fun I was missing. I just did my own thing, checked in with friends who attended, griped and groaned a little, and that was that! 14

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2018

I also note that they are exposed to ongoing media coverage that fills their minds with repeated images of falling towers, school shootings and angry mobs. Add to that the partisan verbiage that encourages extreme positioning, violence, anger and hatred, then you see how their fear and sense of hopelessness sets in. “Emotional Intelligence can be learned. Try it on for the size always fits, needs no return, and never wears out.” — Deborah Bravandt

While there is so much emphasis on academics in our current school system, I believe that not enough attention is given to two areas of their personal development: EQ (emotional intelligence), and creativity. So often the schools pull creative classes from the curriculum in favor of more academic subjects. I recently took a long 10-hour drive to Toronto, Canada. As I glanced out the windows of my car, I felt deep appreciation for the changing foliage, especially the vibrant yellows, oranges and reds of the maple trees. As I was driving, I listened to an audio program that I had worked on with Dan Strutzel and the late enlightened teacher, Dr. David Hawkins. At one point in the audio, Dr. Hawkins spoke about how we could best assist our children in raising their consciousness. David said that the best thing we can do for our children is to surround them with aesthetic beauty: Read Shakespeare to them, expose them to classical music and opera, and take

them for long walks in nature. As I heard this, my heart filled with deep gratitude for my parents. My mind was flooded with memories of playing in nature at the family cottage in Northern Ontario—piano, ballet and gymnastics lessons, and annual outings to the Nutcracker ballet every Christmas. Then I got a flash of our youth—an image of teens staring into their laptops while sitting in nature or sneaking glimpses of their cellphones throughout the ballet. “All emotional intelligence begins with awareness. When we fail to notice what we’re feeling, our responses to that feeling will be habitual and automatic. But, when we identify our emotions, we can consciously choose to act on them in healthy and intelligent ways.” — Jessica Moore So, how can this state of unrest among our youth be remedied? I believe the cure starts with awareness. Cellphone overusage has become habitual and automatic. Our children eat, sleep and often drive with their phones wired to them. I started a calming and meditation program during school lunches that gave them a taste of the world without technology. I provided the students with some fun, introspective videos and concurrent discussions, followed by short visualizations or meditations. Several of the students showed appreciation, noting how the meditation break gave them a chance to recharge in the middle of their busy school day. “Most meditative practices focus on the mind and becoming aware of our thoughts. By bringing this same awareness to our emotions—and then going further by consciously engaging them and uncovering the wisdom they hold—we can gain an even greater level of self-mastery. Emotional mastery comes not just from detachment, but from also allowing our emotions to fully flow, and receiving all that they have to offer us.” — Jessica Moore There is a misconception that has been programmed into our teens that asserts, “If I work harder (i.e. I am stressed,) I will be more successful. If I am more successful, I will be happier.” However, once one goal is met, one is faced with another. With this model, the cycle of stressful success-seeking never ends. If we can assist students in functioning less through stress and more from a place of calm, focus and positivity, then their brains will experience the benefits that ultimately come from relaxation and re-framing. Statistics show that students who practice calming techniques are 31% more productive, achieve much higher grades, have better ability to memorize and are healthier both physically and mentally. Along with gaining greater peace of mind, their intelligence, creativity, ability to memorize and sense of wellbeing all improve. On average, after incorporating meditation into their regimen, sales staff note a 37% increase in their sales, and doctors are known to be 19% more accurate in their diagnoses. As most of you are likely aware, it takes at least 28 days to change a pattern. As the negative patterns decrease, the dopamine within the brain increases. Ultimately, this will assist them in quieting their minds, focusing inward and leaving the stressors associated with technology alone, even if for only 20 minutes each week.

“The truth is, there is no actual stress or anxiety in the world; it’s your thoughts that create these false beliefs. You can’t package stress, touch it or see it. There are only people engaged in stressful thinking.” — Wayne Dyer The students and I had many candid conversations about their struggles with anger, parental disagreements and seeing both sides of the bullying paradigm. By creating a safe place where they can enter into honest, forthright and non-judgmental dialogue is imperative. To do so, we must release our agendas and open to the wisdom and contributions that the students bring to the tranquility room. Then and only then will they start to see the vastness of the power and the promise that their lives have in store for them. The Importance of Practicing

MINDFULNESS by Jakeb Brock One of the keys to progressing on the spiritual path is the practice of mindfulness, or getting in touch with one’s higher Self. This is actually the essence of what it means to be conscious. All of us have an inner core of spiritual consciousness that is immortal and eternal. This spiritual seed, though sometimes lying dormant, never leaves us or ceases to exist. It is not only an integral part of our complex inner kingdom; it is our core essence. In other words, it is our true identity. It is the “us” that constitutes the thread of continuity through each life we live on the earthly plane. In each incarnation on the cycle of birth and death, we find ourselves with a new body and a new mind—a body and mind that render that incarnation experientially unique. But our core 16

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2018

essence of spiritual consciousness, while being housed in a unique situational framework, never changes. What does change from lifetime to lifetime is the relationship we establish and develop with our core spiritual Self. This is where mindfulness or conscious awareness comes in and can potentially play an important role. Awakening to the immutable spiritual presence within us not only impacts our present earthly experience, but as we embark on the subsequent practice of mindfulness, we find that the seed inside of us begins to grow and expand. As this occurs, our present life experience often changes dramatically. As our sense of identity shifts from its attachment to the temporal aspects of our humanhood—aspects such as

body, mind, emotions, and personality— to our core spiritual essence, we begin to emerge from the shadows of the common human dilemma and to enjoy the fruits of eternality. The seed within us quickly becomes a plant with abundant life-giving fruit—fruit that can in turn feed others. The amazing thing about all of this is that becoming mindful or conscious of our Inner Self and establishing a vibrant connection to it is not the least bit difficult or burdensome. This is what Jesus meant when he said, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30.) Making our way in this world at the behest of an insatiable egoic identity is much more difficult than turning inward and nurturing our spiritual consciousness. Moreover,

stimulating the eternal essence of our being is the way of peace and harmony with the universe, while serving the temporal ego is the way of division, strife, and separateness. Wherever we are in our present life situation can be a starting place for practicing mindfulness. We do not need to rearrange our circumstances or involvements to get started. All we need to do is to set aside a quiet time each day to go inward and connect with our spiritual core. This connecting is called mindfulness because what we are doing is using our human mind as an avenue of spiritual awareness to observe the activity of our inner world and dig down through the various layers of inertia and distraction, until we reach the center of our being. Somewhat paradoxically, we use our mind to cut through what is mostly mental inertia. Consciousness occurs when we touch our center. This experience is also called enlightenment. The instant we make that contact it is as if a light goes on—a light that illuminates our entire inner world. This light exposes all of our strictly temporal thoughts and emotions as nothing more than a kind of static interference. As these are exposed for what they really are, our identification with them weakens. Unconsciousness is a state of total unawareness of these temporal inner workings. The conditioning of modern human life—conditioning that begins at birth and continues steadily and inexorably throughout our lifetime— has brought about a proliferation of temporal thought and emotion that happens all on its own impetus. We do not need to do anything; it happens automatically. We do not even need to pay attention to it. So, we learn to put our inner workings on autopilot. We cease from any inclination towards awareness. Essentially, we go to sleep. The problem is that while we are sleeping in this unconscious state a slew of negative influences is seeping into our psyche and having its way with us. These are the natural elemental influences of the earthly plane, such

as sin, fearful dualistic thinking, karma and world mesmerism. That is why the human scene is so full of suffering and misery. Unconsciousness is epidemic among us, which in turn renders us vulnerable to the elemental activity of the earthly plane and leads to one situational problem after another. It is truly a progression that speaks of devastation. The antidote to unconsciousness is, of course, consciousness. As the New Testament exhorts: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:14.) Before we can reverse the devastations of unconsciousness we must awaken. We must become aware of all of the inner activity that has been going on by rote. We must recognize the role that conditioning has played in this proliferation of temporal thought and emotion. We must relinquish our former attachment to identifying with ourselves with this unconscious train. How can

thoughts and emotions that have been set in motion through psychological conditioning be who we really are? Do they not belong rather to some amorphous cultural clone? No, who we really are is spiritual consciousness, and this essential “us” can never die. It is alive within us at this very moment, just waiting to be fanned into the flame of full conscious realization. Therefore, the testimony of eternal life that awaits us is truly glorious. Not only is it a testimony of one lifetime’s fulfillment and fruition; it is the testimony of liberation from the cycle of birth and death and the ultimate deliverance from the negative influences of the earthly plane.

[FROM THE HEART]

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES? by Alan Cohen Do you believe that the universe operates at random, or is there a higher intelligence that orchestrates encounters, events and a stream of destiny? After observing many uncanny synchronicities, I have a firm belief that, despite appearances of haphazardness, a brilliant and loving hand guides us to the right place at the right time for the right purpose. Sonia, a woman from Paris, attended my Life Coach Training retreat at a remote area in Hawaii. During the program, she chatted with another student, Andie, who told her that years ago she had participated in a six-month French 18

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2018

language immersion program in Paris. “I stayed with a woman named Marie St. Ives,” Andie recounted. Sonia’s eyes bulged. “That is the woman I purchased my apartment from.” After confirming details, it became clear that Andie had once stayed in the very apartment Sonia now owned. What are the chances? At another time, I went out to dinner with my friend Bruce at a tiny restaurant in a small town in Maui. The restaurant was crowded that night, so patrons had to sit close to each other on picnic benches. Bruce and I got to reminiscing about our high school days. “The most meaningful thing I did in high school

was a trip to Africa I took with some other students. We toured around some of the safari parks and got to interface with the natives.” Bruce then described some details of the trip. At that moment a woman sitting next to me on the picnic bench leaned over and said, “Excuse me for interrupting. I couldn’t help but overhear your story about your trip to Africa. I was on that trip with you.” After comparing notes, both agreed that they shared the same adventure with a small group of Oregon high school students. Now, 20 years later, they were seated at the same table in an out-of-the-way restaurant in Maui. Bruce and I just “hap-

pened” to bring up that subject. A week later the woman sent me an email with a photo of her and Bruce standing outside the tour bus in an African plain. What are the chances? A Course in Miracles tells us, “Chance plays no part in God’s plan.” Every person you encounter, from the family you are born into, to the person with whom you share a brief elevator ride, to the customer service agent who takes your phone call, to the clients in your business, to your spouse, to your children, all come to you as friends and teachers on your spiritual path. Some empower you with love, and others challenge you. In all cases, there is a gift for you. When you recognize the gift, extract it, appreciate it and use it, your journey becomes far lighter and you accelerate your spiritual advancement and deepen your soul’s reward. Wayne Dyer offered the analogy of entering a junkyard and finding a fullyintact Boeing 747 airplane. “After examining the plane and recognizing the perfect integration of all of its elements and systems, would you conclude that all of the intricate pieces came together at random, or would you have to believe that some vast intelligence orchestrated the manufacture of this highly complex yet meticulously functional system?”

Changing World, I underscore and celebrate that the universe is functioning meticulously and there is indeed a plan that works when we tap into it. We do not have to invent the plan, it is already well in place. We just have to cooperate with it. Many New Age and New Thought teachers state, “you create your own reality.” This is a half-truth. Reality has already been created quite nicely. There is nothing you can do to change it. If you understand it, you would not want to change it because it is always working on our behalf. What you do create is your experience of reality. When you align with reality, you thrive in every way. When you think and act outside universal truth, you grow miserable and wonder what you are doing here. Our role is not to create reality. It is to find it and ride it like a surfer rides a wave.

While we aren’t always aware of the brilliance of the universe, occasionally we have an encounter that gives us a peek into the unspeakably massive 747 we are all riding. Those moments are cause for faith. We can have confidence that we are known and loved, and we can relax and enjoy the ride. Alan Cohen is the author of many popular inspirational books, including the bestseller The Tao Made Easy. For

The engineering of a 747 is a mere pittance in comparison to the engineering of the universe. I love to garden in a papaya orchard I started from seeds. It is utterly amazing to me that I can take a tiny papaya seed about one-tenth of an inch in diameter, plant it and nurture it, and it grows into a tall tree producing hundreds of delicious papayas over its lifetime. I look around the orchard of 25 trees and see an abundance of gorgeous, sweet, nutritional fruit. Who set up that system? No human being invented a papaya and imbued in it the genetic genius to reproduce itself forever and feed many people and animals. We can cooperate with the system and cultivate papaya, but we did not initiate it. God did. In my book, The Tao Made Easy: Timeless Wisdom to Navigate a CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

IS YOUR PINEAL GLAND DECALCIFIED?

Life Changing Benefits of Opening the Third Eye by Lisa Peten

The pineal gland (or third eye) provides perception beyond ordinary sight. Have you ever decalcified your pineal gland? If not, I suspect you are not alone. If you were to text one of your friends or relatives and ask if their pineal gland is decalcified a range of reactions, including the outstanding question: “What is that?” may occur. Some of the more well-informed may answer with a question such as “Do you mean my third-eye?” Yet, the scratching of the head may still ensue in trying to figure out if it is decalcified. If you do not yet have membership in the WhatsApp Group, Plant-Based Livity, where decalcification of the pineal gland is often discussed, your pineal gland knowledge may need some enhancements. Not to worry, read on to get informed about the pineal gland and discover ways to reap the benefits of decalcification.

WHAT IS THE PINEAL GLAND? The pineal gland is called the third-eye. While many illustrations depict its position between the eyes and centered on the forehead, it is actually centered deep within the two halves of the brain and is about the size of a grain of rice. The name of this endocrine gland is derived from its shape, thought to be similar to the shape of a pinecone (Latin term pinea.) The pineal gland functions to produce melatonin to help maintain circadian rhythm and regulate reproductive hormones. 26

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2018

WHY THE NEED TO OPEN THE THIRD-EYE? Eyes are called “the window of the soul,” so naturally, this transcends to the high esteem and praise for an ‘opened’ third-eye. In addition, the location of the pineal gland is within the pathway of logical and emotional thoughts occurring which makes this an ideal window for intuition to birth. In many spiritual and holistic health communities, an opened third-eye signifies deep perception that propels higher levels of consciousness. An opened third-eye offers grand prosperity and abundance to an enlightened life. Many profess they know when their third-eye is opened because they can read the thoughts of others before they are expressed, depict the outcome of a situation, or experience complete insight into their present-day journey to name just a few. It is easy to discover if your third eye is open with a quick internet search on this question. Many people believe that the range of signs include realizing your own ignorance, asking questions to make you more aware, and seeing number alignments (i.e. 11:11, 222.) For those who of us who embrace the truth of these signs, this knowledge is eye-opening!

HOW DO YOU DECALCIFY IT? Calcification of the pineal gland is a result of an accumulation of fluoride that forms phosphate crystals, creating a hard shell around the pineal. This buildup weakens psychological develop-

ment, peak performance, and spiritual awakening so it becomes necessary to decalcify a.k.a. cleanse your pineal gland. Eating whole foods, using supplements, and/or using good self-care techniques are great ways to detox your pineal gland.

WHAT FOODS HELP TO DECALCIFY? Since calcification may be caused by fluoride buildup, eating foods to weaken the buildup is the key to decalcify. Some of these foods include alkaline rich foods packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants like beets, chlorella, spirulina and wheatgrass. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

The following foods may aid in cleansing your pineal gland: Oregano Oil Kale

Sesame Seeds Sea Vegetables Almonds Blue Algae Thyme Cranberries Dill

Dried Plums Dried Herbs Organic Yogurt Oranges Raw Cacao Chlorophyll-rich super foods

WHAT SUPPLEMENTS HELP TO DECALCIFY? The debate about the necessity and effectiveness of supplements rages on. However, m any recommend the following herbs to decalcify and aid in the cleansing of the third-eye.

WHAT TYPES OF SELF-CARE TECHNIQUES HELP TO DECALCIFY? Any type of buildup in our systems such as stress, mucous or cortisone will result in harmful effects to the body. This is commonly a sign of self-care neglect. The brief list of actions below is suggested as part of a daily regimen to aid decalcification of the third eye: Meditation Magnetic fields

Sound waves therapy Dry sauna.

The benefits of a fully functioning pineal gland include a centeredbeing, increase in good health, better relationships with self and others, less stress, more tolerance, greater compassion, and strengthened intuition. Go back to that same friend or family member who you asked the question to and empower them with some ways they can decalcify their pineal gland. They will ‘clearly’ thank you with fresh eyes! MINDFULNESS

Toward Freedom from Anxiety and Depression by Georgia Jones I was talking with a client the other day who was describing some harsh thoughts that were plaguing her, thoughts like “I’m horribly ugly;” “No one will ever love me;” or “I messed up again, I’ll never amount to anything.” Even just listening to her say these out loud made me feel bad. And yet, who among us hasn’t had thoughts like this to varying degrees and frequencies? Most of the time we don’t even “hear” our negative (or positive) thoughts. They just play in the background and affect our mood and our body, weighing us down and sapping our confidence. These are the food sources for depression and anxiety. Good news! Thoughts are just thoughts, not the truth. And, feelings are temporary and as malleable as water. I know, I know—it doesn’t seem that way. We are so fused with our thoughts and feelings that the whole world is colored and created by them. We are in a thought-haze and don’t even know it. So, how do we burst free from this haze? We do so by cultivating mindfulness. Mindfulness meditation, the intentional practice of cultivating mindfulness, is the act of choosing an object of focus and gently bringing your attention to that object with an attitude of acceptance, openness, curiosity and nonjudgment. Try with me now. Close your eyes and just listen for a minute. Be curious and accepting of any sounds you hear. No need to understand, label or change the sounds. Just listen. Just notice.

28

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2018

Just allow. What did you notice? Any sense of relief, freedom of simplicity? Any sense of just being present and calm? The more you practice meditation, the easier it becomes to drop into this state of clean and simple presence. From there, you can do anything. I teach this skill to my clients. Then we use it to loosen the grip of oppressive, cruel thoughts. We can’t stop or fight the thoughts, but imagine relating to them as you did with the sounds or like clouds drifting across the sky. They are just thoughts, that you can hold lightly, letting them appear and disappear without taking them in or believing them. This is a superpower against the clutches of depression, anxiety and so much that plagues us. Relating to your thoughts, your emotions, yourself or the whole world from this stance feels qualitatively different from the haze most of us are in most of the time. You will feel refreshed, freed and light! Mindfulness meditation is not the only answer to states like depression and anxiety, but it is a truly powerful, paradigm-shifting tool. Georgia Jones is a psychotherapist and owner of Chicago Mindful Psychotherapy with offices in Andersonville and The Loop. Chicago Mindful Psychotherapy provides individual, couple and group psychotherapy and teaches applied meditation. Visit or call 773-454-1807.

When we reduce stress the innate intelligence of our body knows how to bring back health and healing. When we get into the right brain wave state, we are able to rejuvenate and recharge, and our intuition, creativity and inventiveness increases. In a relaxed state we have the power to remove the limiting beliefs and make the necessary changes in our life so that we can be happier and healthier. When our body is in balance and has a better response to stressful stimuli, our cortisol levels return back to normal which can result in shedding unwanted pounds.

[REVIEW OF HEALING MODALITIES]

Rasha

Stress Reduction Technology by Ania Wilewska According to both the World Health Organization and American Medical Association, up to 97% of all illnesses in modern society are stress related. In today’s world, each of us is constantly under stress. Stress has become part of our everyday routine—a norm. But, should it be normal for our perfectly designed bodies to fall into dis-ease, leading us to today’s current healthcare model? Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms: decreased energy, headaches or migraines, insomnia, skin problems, changes in libido, problems with digestion, depression, pain, irritability, lack of concentration, confusion, anxiety and weight gain? If so, then you are experiencing chronic stress. Sure, there are some pills we can take which will temporarily alleviate the symptoms, but putting a band-aid over these symptoms is not the solution. The real solution is to get to the core of the problem, balance our bodies and reduce stress. As Louise Hay says, “If you want to clean the house, you gotta see the dirt.” Like most things, reducing stress is easier said than done, but in reality, there are things we simply can’t change. What we can do is manage how we respond to the stressors. Some available tools that help us achieve balance are meditation, yoga, breathing, keeping a positive attitude and eating healthy balanced meals. Unfortunately, sometimes chronic stress is so overpowering that attempting yoga or exercise is painful, and positive thinking seems like a far-fetched concept which we just can’t seem to get a hold of. Stress creates limiting beliefs, slows our growth and creates unconscious roadblocks on our path to success and health. When our mind is hindered, our energy is low, our spirituality is non-existent, and our body eventually starts to show it. Physical symptoms are the last warning indicating that is something wrong with our whole being. A remarkable tool to help us get back on track is scalar energy therapy. Scalar waves have the power to influence the morphogenetic field—the blueprint of our physical body. Rasha is a scalar plasma technology that harmonizes and balances the autonomic nervous system to move from fight-or-flight stress response to a more restful and relaxed state where healing can occur.

A relaxed mind-body brings on a higher awareness, improved clarity, focus and coherence. Once the mind is in order the body follows. The mind-body approach, you can’t heal one without the other. With a relaxed mind a body reduces inflammation, shifts into a more alkaline state, immune system increases and healing begins. With all these amazing benefits scalar energy therapy just might be the answer to our modern-day lifestyle. Rasha supports the body through Scalar Plasma Coil technology, which combines discoveries of three scientific pioneers: Nikola Tesla, Antoine Prioré and Dr. Royal Rife. Nikola Tesla, a genius mind and an exceptional inventor said, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” James Clark Maxwell and then Tesla were the first ones to discover scalar energy. Scalar waves transmit energy and information, and they occupy space. Patented Tesla coils, used in the Rasha are able to generate scalar energy. Plasma (formed by using high voltage to ionize noble gases, unreactive elements, such as Xenon or Argon to create charged elements) is also able to generate scalar waves. Antoine Prioré constructed an apparatus that is able to do just that. The scalar energy produced by plasma has the ability to “time reverse” a deviation of a physical dysfunction. Dr. Royal Rife had extensively studied frequencies and discovered that various pathogens (bacteria, viruses and parasites) and physical dysfunctions have specific frequencies. Matter vibrates at a specific frequency. When a body is in a state of disease, it vibrates at a frequency different than a healthy body does. The frequencies generated in the Rasha software are transmitted to the Tesla coils and Priore’s plasma to generate scalar waves. Anna Wilewska is a Rasha practitioner. With an in-depth evaluation and consultation, she can create a holistic integrative approach to an issue with which you are currently dealing. Anna herself suffered for years dealing with multiple autoimmune diseases and healing herself through a lifestyle change, herbs, supplements and Rasha. Currently, Anna is a Ph.D. candidate at Quantum University where she is able to integrate her knowledge of herbal and ancient medicine, medical anthropology, with quantum medicine. COSMIC DAILY WEATHER November 2018 by Bernadette Evans

Overview

November is a busy month with some planets going direct and some going retrograde. Venus starts to slowly move forward on Nov. 16; while that same day, in the evening, Mercury stations retrograde. You may have felt things start to slow down at the beginning of the month as Mercury began its preretrograde shadow phase on Oct. 28. Mercury will retrograde for approximately three weeks and then will be in its Post-retrograde shadow phase for seven days. This month the New Moon will be in Scorpio on Nov. 7 at 10:02 a.m. The New Moon is about setting intentions for the month ahead. When it’s in Scorpio, we need to ask ourselves, what we desire and what we are passionate about. There may be things below the surface that you’ve never admitted to anyone else or possibly even yourself that scare you because of their intensity. Examine these pieces and bring them into the light. The Full Moon will be in Gemini on Nov. 22 at 11:39 p.m. Full Moons are about releasing energies, so what do you want to let go of? With the Full Moon in Gemini, you may be feeling scattered and not sure of what needs to go. After all, Gemini’s ruler, Mercury, is retrograde and remember when I said this is a great time to review, revisit, rethink and revise? Jupiter moves into Sagittarius this month where it will stay for 13 months. This is a happy and comfortable placement for Jupiter. We may feel more optimistic and philosophical and seek to improve ourselves by reaching for a far-off goal. Last but not least, Neptune goes direct this month on Nov. 24. The planet of dreams, visions, fantasy, illusions, creativity and sensitivity starts moving forward, slowly. Maybe its time to dust off those dreams you’ve been harboring and get to it. Astrology is a tool that can guide us by explaining the energies that we’re dealing with on a daily basis. When consciously working with the energy of the planets we can enjoy the easier days as well as prepare ourselves for the more challenging days. Our own chart is a snapshot of the Universe of when and where we were born, our own personal blueprint. It can help us discover our strengths and assist us in understanding more about ourselves and our loved ones. You can check out your chart at astrotheme.com.

Saturday, November 17 Bring your dreams to the forefront and use your imagination to make them real. Don’t just dream it, create it with the help of the Mercury-Neptune square.

It feels like a big day with the Sun entering Sagittarius, not to mention our Full Moon later on tonight, so let’s get to it! Happy Birthday to all born in Sagittarius! And, a Happy Thanksgiving to my American Friends, enjoy that turkey and pumpkin pie! It may feel like a lot is happening but yet nothing is quite connecting. The Moon is void just about the entire day, so its the perfect time to watch the parade or a football game; as for the rest of us who are not enjoying a feast today, look after yourselves and be patient, the energy will get moving by later on tonight. We have our Full Moon in Gemini tonight at 11:38 p.m. Moon goes VoC at 3:59 a.m. until 10:10 p.m. when it enters Gemini.

Mercury squaring Mars may ask you to put your beliefs to the test, where could these beliefs, this leap of faith take you in the world. You never know until you take that first step.

Friday, November 23 With the energy of the Full Moon still being present, consider what it is that needs to go. Is there an old idea or belief that is keeping you stuck? Have you expressed yourself clearly? When we communicate in a clear and loving way, we’re able to move forward on our journey.

Saturday, November 24 Sometimes when the Moon is in Gemini we can feel scattered because we’re juggling so many balls in the air at once. We have so many choices before us, it can feel like a buffet and we’re not sure which dish to choose. As long as you make a choice and step forward, you’ll be paving the way forward for opportunity, and advancement. Neptune starts its slow movement forward today at 7:08 p.m. Moon goes VoC at 11:31 p.m.

Sunday, November 25 With the Sun-Jupiter conjunction, you could be feeling quite optimistic and generous. You could also be thinking about taking a class at this time. What is it that would feed you right now? The Moon entered Cancer at 12:38 a.m.

Tuesday, November 27 Can you feel the excitement in the air? The day is ripe with possibilities and potentials with the Sun-MercuryJupiter-Moon trine. What inspires you? With all this fire, it’s time to spin your dreams into gold. Moon VoC at 1:22 a.m. until 2:35 a.m. when it enters Leo.

Wednesday, November 28 We may feel confident, generous, full of vitality when the Moon is in Leo. As I’ve already mentioned, all this fire is energizing and inspiring; the caution I would give is to be careful of overdoing, of overextending yourself and becoming drained.

Thursday, November 29 It can be hard to put the brakes on when we’ve been having so much fun socializing and playing. Just be aware that with the Moon-Jupiter square, money can come in quickly but it can vanish just as easily. Moon VoC at 3:47 a.m. until 5:08 a.m. when it enters Virgo.

Friday, November 30 Virgo Moon is so great at organizing because she sees all the details that others just glaze over; and when this Moon trines Pluto, and she has a goal, she is laser-focused and determined. Doing a great job is definitely something to be proud of. Now, it’s Friday, back away from the work and reward yourself for a job well done. Sometimes forgiveness can take years. The main reason for this is that it may be too difficult for the forgiver to think about the incident or the person. Or, the forgiver may not be self-aware enough to pinpoint the emotions they have. Anger triggers the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response. The adrenal glands flood the body with stress hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol. When we are not able to let go and forgive, this biological response is triggered whenever we think of that person or event. Our minds are taken over by ruminating thoughts that cause hurt, deepening and expanding the story. We may begin to carry over these feelings and emotions about something or someone else into new experiences and relationships, creating unwanted emotional baggage.

FORGIVENESS THROUGH YOGA by Raquel Jex Forsgren, Yoga Therapist, C-IAYT Most everyone will tell you that if you can reach the point of forgiveness toward another person or yourself that a “weight will lift from your shoulders.” With the holidays upon us, the topic of forgiveness is front and center, as we may be interacting with people for whom forgiveness seems impossible to imagine. Forgiveness, although freeing, can be deeply rooted in one event to a mounting of events or things that have happened in one’s life. Some people feel that if they forgive, they “have to” forget and that may mean that whatever they are forgiving the person or themselves for is okay. For others, they feel that by forgiving simply means that they no longer carry that burden with them. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. We all have experienced feeling like we can’t let something go. That something could be a wrong-doing from someone or behavior of our own. This same feeling of not being able to let go is often accompanied by emotions such as shame, anger, hurt or even guilt. Let’s start with the basics, what causes us to feel like we “have to” forgive? Is it society, our parents, friends or spouses? Is it to relax our minds, heal our bodies, mend relationships, or simply, just to move on? So, where do we start? We must want to forgive. We must ask ourselves how much time we spend ruminating over something someone said or did to us. We must be able to identify in our minds and our bodies how we feel about the person, or if it is within ourselves, what that brings up for us? Most of the time, forgiveness is accomplished in baby steps.

How can yoga help us begin to forgive? It increases our self-awareness. It helps us notice emotions and thoughts that arise at the moment and encourages us to be curious about them. We learn to ask ourselves, how am I hurt or what am I angry about? Where do I feel it in my body? What do I feel and where do I feel it when I think of that person who betrayed or hurt me? Sit with these feelings, feel them, write them down, say them out loud. Identify them. Then make a choice. Do you want to continue feeling this way, or are you ready to heal and let go for yourself? Forgiveness is about feeling strong, self-confident and loving ourselves. This is a process, too. The essential ingredient toward forgiving is gratitude. Below are a few simple suggestions that have worked for me: 1. Be grateful: Find an aspect of your life for which to be grateful. 2. See the soul: Each of us is born pure. Try picturing the person who hurt you or yourself as a baby. 3. Be grateful: Find some small quality of the other person for which to be grateful. 4. Practice: Do heart opening yoga postures. 5. Practice Loving Kindness: Find a guided meditation about loving kindness and practice it at least once per week. (You can find one on YouTube.) 6. Be grateful: Find something about the experience that shaped your life for the better. 7. Be mindful: As you move toward forgiveness, you may feel called to engage or disengage with the person. Listen to your intuition. 8. Repeat 1-6: Own your life, your decisions and your choices. A NEW TRADITION Pumpkins and Acorn Squash by Janae Jean In North America, pumpkins and other winter squash are synonymous with fall. Pumpkin pies, lattés, breads, muffins and more are everywhere as well as squash soups and risottos. While you may think that pumpkin and squash look very different from one another, pumpkin is actually a variety of winter squash and both are members of the gourd family which also includes cucumber, melon and zucchini. These plants originated in Central America and Mexico but are now grown on six continents. North Americans have cultivated pumpkins for five thousand years. They come in white, blue, green, red and yellow varieties as well as the ubiquitous orange ones. Pumpkin is a lowcalorie and versatile ingredient that can be added to savory dishes as well as sweet desserts. Pumpkin is a healthful addition to any meal with twice the daily recommendation for vitamin A, high levels of vitamin C and fiber in each one cup serving. While there are many popular types of winter squash, acorn squash is a perennial favorite. Acorn squash is also known as pepper squash and is known for its mellow flavor. It pairs well with diverse ingredients such as maple, sage, nutmeg or garlic. For November’s recipes, we are creating a savory entrée or side-dish with pumpkin and a healthful dessert option with acorn squash. Both of these dishes are welcome additions to the traditional Thanksgiving meal. Choosing indigenous foods to complement a

family celebration is one way we can honor the gifts of the harvest season.

PUMPKIN WILD RICE RISOTTO 1 small white onion, diced 1 teaspoon garlic, minced 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon dried sage 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 3 tablespoons water 1 cup wild rice, white rice and brown rice blend 32 ounces vegetable broth1 cup cooked pumpkin purée Salt and pepper, to taste In a large sauté pan with lid, cook the diced onion and garlic in the olive oil over medium high heat until onion is clear. Add the rice and dried sage to toast. In a small bowl mix apple cider vinegar and water. Deglaze the pan with the apple cider vinegar and water blend. Add one cup vegetable broth and cook it down. Add the rest of the broth one cup at a time until all the broth is absorbed. Then add the pumpkin puree. Cover with a lid and cook until the rice is fully cooked. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately. Makes four servings.

ROASTED ACORN SQUASH 2 acorn squashes 4 tablespoons coconut oil, melted

2 teaspoons nutmeg 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 tablespoons maple syrup 2 tablespoons raw sugar A pinch of salt Non-dairy coconut sorbet (optional) Preheat oven to 450°F. Cut acorn squashes in half and scoop out seeds. Place squash halves on a baking sheet. In a small bowl mix together melted coconut oil, maple syrup, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt. Bake for 40 minutes. Sprinkle with raw sugar and bake for another 20 to 30 minutes, until the squash flesh is tender and golden. Serve squash warm. Top with a scoop of non-dairy coconut sorbet (optional.) That’s because, he explains, the virtual world allows us to put on facades and hide our true pains. Salimi expands on the implications of this, which include having a darker perception of the world, experiencing decline in mental and spiritual well-being, as well as increasing levels of conflict in the real world. His call to action inspires readers to go outside their comfort zones and end the virus that loneliness has become. 38
