PUBLISHER’S LETTER

PARENTING B

eing a parent is one of the most important and challenging jobs in the world in my humble opinion. It requires your attention 24/7, and it lasts the rest of your life. Also, it can be very satisfying!

Our June issue features conscious parenting - focusing on fathers. There are fathers who have just started their families, and those who already had kids. Dr. John Duffy shares some insights on how to be a conscious father and what kids really want from parents. He writes, “To be a father is the greatest privilege any of us dads will ever experience. To be a positive male influence in the life of our sons and daughters, especially now, is crucial. And, it is decidedly not work. With the onslaught of information and influence that our anxious children are exposed to these days as well as the pressures of their social and academic lives, our children need fathers more than ever.” I cannot agree more with this statement.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

I was raised by my father. My mom went to the US when I was 9 years old. One thing that I remember from my childhood was that my dad sent us to school at 7:45 a.m. and welcomed us when we got home. He made dinners for us every day, and it was the same all the time (chicken soup with potatoes), until I learned how to cook from my grandmother. Also, my father taught me what it means to trust and to be accountable. Once a week, he gave me money for bread, and I was in charge of going to the store every day to buy fresh bread for us. I liked this job a lot, because I could keep the change and feel like the richest kid at school. My dad really made sure that we got everything we needed when we needed it. My whole family is now in the US. My dad reads every issue of Conscious Community Magazine, and I know that he is proud of me where I am. As many of you know, parents wear MANY hats. Sometimes they need a boost of energy. If you are a busy parent, I highly recommend reading Janae Jean’s article about matcha tea and health benefits of it; Matcha for Mind, Body and Spirit. Did you know that matcha tea is a great source of vitamins C and A, reduces blood pressure, helps you eliminate free radicals from your body and may even stop the growth of cancer cells?! To read more about matcha tea and its benefits, go to page 25. Also check out Betsy Bruns’ article Spring into Health with Seasonal Veggies and Exotic Spices, and try out her Eggless Egg salad recipe on page 37. It is full of proteins, minerals and vitamins. I tried this salad last year at our Christmas Party, and it is the best salad I have ever eaten! I highly recommend it! As always, check out www.ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com regularly to see our latest content, including the entire podcast from our interview with noted writer and teacher Edith Hall, who shares her deep insights on how studying Aristotle’s ancient philosophy can help us all live more fulfilling lives in the modern world. Enjoy reading this month’s issue! Happy Father’s Day! The Best,

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q: Several months ago, my 55-yearold husband was laid off. He is struggling to find another job. It’s weighing heavily on him. I think he feels lost and a bit depressed. I’m not sure how to help him process these challenges. — Treading Unsure Waters A: Dear Treading Unsure Waters, Many middle-aged men are finding themselves in this same boat, which offers new inner mountains and valleys to explore, along with the unexpected time and space to do so as they try to cope with potentially uncomfortable feelings around identity loss and selfworth. I’d offer an eagle-eye overview about paying bills or finding a new job, as it’s definitely a time of great archetypal energy changes. In recent years, women have been experiencing huge transformations while discovering new identities that emerge with those changes. The identities of most men are tied up in their careers, which can take a psychological plunge with a job loss or retirement. Such life changes can shift self-perceptions into a place of insecurity and “seeking” in ways that can nudge them to look in new places for answers that resolve questions around troubling feelings. Under such circumstances, they deserve our support as we make room for them to explore their vulnerabilities as we have in the past. Females intentionally gather in circles and attend workshops supporting and empowering one another, to deepen into sensorially conscious awareness while rising into courageous self-realization 10

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

and empowerment. Women are natural support systems for one another while men have a tendency to be isolated and stand as lone wolves. If one looks at personal growth and spiritual workshops, they’re generally filled 80% or more with women. Rarely do we see gentlemen in these workshops, yet that’s rapidly changing, as I think it’s now our men’s turn for self-empowerment in similarly liberating ways. Just because one has been the master does not guarantee that one has been free. We’re in a very special time in human history where the energy of the old guard is changing. As women empower themselves, they’re moving out of the archetypal energies of the damsel in distress, the princess and the rescuer, which is shifting how males act/ react as those long-held roles are vacated. As we evolve, some of the roles of the masculine automatically shift in response, which can leave men in unfamiliar territory. Consider contemporary dating roles. Unexpected job losses that last a while can make men feel vulnerable and lost, yet these circumstances offer partners reasons to put their tools into practice, like holding non-judgemental space— even when we’re also afraid—and providing loving support that clearly shows them that they have much more value than the mere societal role of being the “provider.” We can reassure them that we’re in this together and we’re capable of pulling our weight during times of challenge. We should gently encourage them to explore mindful practices that we know breed

inner peace. We can gently suggest new options and provide resources for them to consider that are effective and typically out-of-the-male-box while hoping that their distress opens them up to newly expansive experiences. An unsure future breeds a sense of wanting to do anything to usher in some reprieve. As middle-aged men find themselves with questions and more free time, they’re turning towards practices like yoga and meditation for mental, physical and emotional balance. They’re going alone on physically challenging spiritual pilgrimages, that facilitate working out issues through the mind, body and spirit, which can bring forth new awareness. They’re joining in male circles like “The Mankind Project” which examines the underpinnings of cultural pressures in a safe space that tell them that their identity is in their career and that they need to “man up,” be the protector and the provider, while exploring feelings of vulnerability and anger that they may have never allowed themselves to feel before. Together, seek the light that shines through the seeming brokenness of the cracks that have appeared in your lives. Initiate casually neutral, meaningful talks about your circumstances while doing things side-by-side, which makes it much easier for men to open up and share how they’re feeling. Encourage his practice in self-care by helping him cultivate time for hobbies, being in nature and seeking out passions while inspiring reading about male self-improvement, because they do things slightly differently. It’s time for the sacred masculine to take his place beside the rising of the divine feminine so that both can be cocreators and support one another in ways which liberate both. Alecia Rice integrates higher concepts with wisdom to bring forth balance, perspective, and clarity. She’s a personal advisor, speaker and gatherer of women. For perspective on life issues, you’re invited to text questions and comments to 681-321-1109. Discussions continue at Ask Alecia on Facebook.

Edith: Yes. I was at Oxford studying classics and had to write a paper about making decisions in Greek tragedy. My great tutor told me to read the third book of Nicomachean Ethics series. It blew me away. For the first time in my life, I heard a voice that seemed to be describing exactly how I felt about moral dilemmas and my position in the world relative to other people, animals, ethics and everything. So, I got very excited and started to read the rest of this great mind. I was so amazed at how he developed a whole system of thinking; he’s actually the father of logic. It isn’t just about your personal life—your subjective self—everything interconnects. He’s very encouraging; the whole thing is written as if you apply this to your life, you will get happier. It’s a system of secular ethics. There is no god in it, but that doesn’t mean that he was an Atheist. He thought it was completely up to humans to create their own happiness. This spoke to me at that age in a very powerful way, because I had been very lost since I was about 13. JJ: Your father was an Anglican priest, and growing up you were interested in astrology, Buddhism and Transcendental Meditation. How does Aristotle fit into all of that? EH: For me, he was the non-mystical answer. He’s very modern. He doesn’t think you will ever be happy if you act out of accordance with your emotions. You’ve got to find a way for reason and emotion to go together at all times. It’s all part of the same system. He’s very holistic. This, for me, was extremely liberating. JJ: In your writing, you talk about the importance of planning and how planning can lead us to happiness yet many people would think it’s the opposite. SS: We have a very “instant gratification” society when it comes to self-improvement. EH: It’s really about how you define “happiness.” Aristotelian happiness is not a passing mood that can be brought on by a “happy meal” or “happy hour.” It can only come from within yourself. It comes from that feeling of being able to look in the mirror and know that you have tried to do your best. If you’ve tried to be the best possible you, worked on your not-sonice characteristics, recognized what you are really good at, and recognized your strong personal qualities and enhanced those further, then you get a really firm, really Teflon, sense of contentment, even if you have unbelievably bad luck. Aristotle says that he sees that people who are ‘bad’ are almost always really unhappy. The other thing is Aristotle thinks that everybody is good at something, and that’s absolutely true. It may be parenting, gardening, making other people happy, cracking jokes, violin playing, Ancient Greek literature; it may be (you) discussing deep issues that make them accessible to the public. Happiness is being the best version of you and exercising it, and that’s what you want to do with your

whole life. It’s a verb, not a noun. It is a way of doing everything with an approach. SS: I heard a discussion on public radio about IQ and success. They said that most successful people have high IQs but having a high IQ does not mean you will be successful. The difference between somebody who is successful and one who is not is grit or determination. EH: The crucial thing here, and this is why I think Aristotle is so helpful if you are a parent or in a job that has parental aspects, is helping the young discover what it is they are very good at. There is no greater gift than someone taking that seriously and talking about that with you. The key to it, if you are an Aristotelian, is what gives them the most pleasure. SS: But, not in the Hedonistic sense? EH: No. What I tried to do with my kids was to let them do what they wanted, but I exposed them to as many things as I possibly could. For example, my youngest has just gone to university to study Japanese, and there’s no study of Oriental languages in my family. I thought, “Where on Earth did she get that from?” She told me, “Mummy, don’t you remember you took me to see that manga film, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, when I was eight?” I had completely forgotten that. But she said that was a moment she realized she loved everything about it. When she said that, it really moved me. This is where I can get a little bit mystical. One of the wonders of the human race is that we seem to have been given such a diverse range of abilities. There is nothing better for me than watching someone who is really excellent at something; anything from cooking to parenting to driving a car well, seeing them enjoying being excellent at what they do. That is where Aristotle says you are getting nearest to God because this is what animals can’t do. Animals are driven by their instincts. Aristotle invented the idea of the “Hive Mind,” which is why he thought democracy was the best system. He said it’s like a public feast where everybody brought the dish they were best at. He said that’s what an ideal society should be. I think it is miraculous what diverse things excite people. I genuinely get excited by going to a library and reading some old Greek book. Weird, isn’t it? But I do. I’m very lucky that I get to do that for money. Getting to do what you’re really good at is the happiest you can possibly be as a human. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

BREAKTHROUGH (THE MOVIE) CINEMARK THEATRE, WOODRIDGE May 8, 2019 by Theresa Puskar

14

In my desire to be truly inspired, I often pick up faith-based films at the library but soon after reading the synopsis, I quickly return them to the shelf.

There were some really wonderful performances. Being shot mostly in Canada, I recognized a couple of Canadian actors as well.

Despite the fact that I am a self-professed sucker for anything moving and inspirational, I most often find myself suspicious of faith-based films. More often than not, they are very fear-based and preachy. This film, however, was a welcome change. While sometimes the Christian messaging was not subtle, I was relieved that, while referencing God, this film was not filled with the usual sin and Sunday pulpit scripting that so many of this genre are.

Without a well-written script, it can be difficult for an actor to give an outstanding performance. That being said, I thought the acting in this movie was very well done, particularly by the leading lady, Chrissy Metz. Actually, come to think of it, I don’t believe there were any weak performances.

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

A good movie resonates with you and takes you back to key moments in your life. This movie did just that!

The quote about the power of two or more gathered in prayer has always resonated as truth to me.

I don’t believe in accidents and sitting in this theatre, I felt a very strong synchronicity. In actuality, I was supposed to cover a live event this month. However, for whatever reason, the event did not go on. While I was super frustrated at wasting three hours of my time, not to mention the cost of gas and parking fees, I later realized that the situation ultimately ended up with this review of Breakthrough—a film I may not have otherwise seen. Without giving too much away, as the movie nears its end, there is a scene where the entire community bands together to pray for the protagonist, John Smith. This scene is touching, and I was relieved that I was only one of four people in the afternoon showing. Most often, when the theatre is crowded, I end up with a massive headache as I attempt to hold back the tears. In this case, I had the space to let loose and did some good, solid sobbing. My experience during that particular scene was very visceral. My body and mind were flooded with memories that took me back 18 years. On February 2, 2001, I lost control of my car on black ice while driving to Toronto during a snowstorm. The car rolled several times, and I was rendered unconscious for over 40 minutes. It was physically quite traumatic, as I ended up with some spinal fractures and had to endure five hours of surgery, getting over 500 stitches to re-adhere my scalp.

Soon after the crash, I was informed that (similar to the scene in the movie), hundreds, perhaps even thousands of people were praying for me and my unborn child. (I was three months pregnant.) I received cards and letters from so many people, and I was deeply moved! Because of all of the spinal injuries, for several months after the incident, the doctors insisted upon x-rays. I often overheard the x-ray technicians arguing, “We can’t x-ray this woman. Look at how pregnant she is! But the doctor said we have to because of the extent of her injuries!” Along with requesting three lead aprons during the x-rays, I did a great deal of praying, asking my angels to protect my little one. With all of the radiation, I had visions of my child coming into this world green, glowing and looking like an alien. However, much to my delight, she was born a healthy and beautiful nine pound, four ounce baby girl. Friends and colleagues named her the “miracle baby.” “You had an army of celestial beings supporting you during the crash.” On more than one occasion, channels and healers informed me that I was surrounded by angels during the crash. I had no doubt that there was a massive team watching over us. For a couple of hours right after the crash, I was in an altered state. I remember becoming conscious in the ambulance, and I felt the loving energy that was emanating from the paramedic, Kevin, whose name will be forever etched in my heart. For several hours, I felt his love and that of others towards me on a very deep level. Another item of note was that for the first several hours, I was in a state of surrender. I remember having doctors assess my head. At first, I thought they were looking at my face. I assumed that it had been extremely scarred and disfigured. What I find most remarkable was that I didn’t care. I had had a successful career as an actress, and being almost 40, I knew that my primary focus

would soon be on mothering. So, I had a conversation with my divine stating, “If my face is disfigured, so be it. I will be a mother and my looks will be secondary in the life ahead of me.” Only later did I discover that they were assessing my torn scalp and not my face. It was not severely disfigured. In fact, soon after, my big ego returned in full force. I was very distressed after looking at the small scars that appeared on my forehead and scalp. We need to take good care, for our prayers and intentions are always answered. I ended up spending several months in bed and several more months wearing a neck brace. I noted that at the time of the crash I had made a couple of requests of my divine. The first was that I learn that my worth is not based on what I do but in who I AM. Second, that I learn to meditate and become more still and present. Third, that I stop identifying myself as a producer and writer and see myself as a human BEING. As I lay in bed without work and with no options beyond lying still and being present, I realized that my prayers had been answered. I have since learned to always ask that my prayers manifest in a very gentle, subtle and easy way! So the next time you find yourself insanely frustrated because things had not progressed as planned, give yourself permission to express your anger. Then surrender, relax and pay attention to the “new plans” that the universe has orchestrated on your behalf! ON CONSCIOUS FATHERHOOD by Dr. John Duffy

16

A while back, I worked with a father who described a typical day in his home. His wife, the mother of their three children, does the lion’s share of the parenting. She prepares the meals, helps with the homework and puts the kids to bed each day. If his son or one of his daughters was going through something emotional, a bad grade, a breakup or some other social difficulty, well, Mom handled that as well.

paperwork done. As far as he was concerned, he got away with it; he ‘won’ parenting. He comforted himself by recognizing, accurately, that he was a far more involved parent than his father was—stoic, quiet, iron-fisted. No, this dad was warm and kind and supportive, but he didn’t have to do much of the work of parenting. Those were the precise words he used as I recall, “the work of parenting.”

Meanwhile, he would read the paper, go out for a run or get some extra

I think that, historically, we fathers have considered parenting work to some

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

extent. And far too often, that work has been off-loaded to our parenting partners. It’s time we shift our conceptualization, away from work and more toward privilege. To be a father is the greatest privilege any of us dads will ever experience. To be a positive male influence in the life of our sons and daughters, especially now, is crucial. And, it is decidedly not work. With the onslaught of information and influence that our anxious children are exposed to these days, as well as

the pressures of their social and academic lives, our children need fathers more than ever. We need a new conceptualization of fatherhood. We need to model for our kids an approach to all the data and stressors that we are exposed to and show them how men treat others, especially the women in their lives, with a deep sense of equality and respect. The new fatherhood is a more conscious, more available fatherhood. • The conscious father ensures he is available to his children, physically and emotionally, during their stormy days, as well as their cloudless days. The conscious father shows his sons and daughters the strength of his own vulnerability. • The conscious, available father parents as free as he can of the fear, judgment and ego that colors so much of our parenting. He protects time for parenting, placing the cell phone on silent and connecting with each child. He looks each of his children in the eye every day. He shows he loves them and says “I love you.” • The conscious, available father plays and wrestles. He creates in-jokes that bolster the “Emotional Bank Account” of each of his children. • A conscious father is an equal partner in parenting. He decidedly does not conceptualize parenting as work. But, there is an important component of parenting that I think we tend to miss altogether, all too frequently. And that is the benefit of parenting to us, the fathers. Being an active, conscious father provides the depth of mission, fulfillment and connection that so many of us feel is missing in our lives, especially as we approach midlife. Connection is the opposite of depression and anxiety, and our parenting also keeps us healthy and grounded. Our parenting keeps us young and connected not only to our children but to the broader culture surrounding us. All that is to say, our active, involved, conscious parenting is a win-win.

Finally, I want to provide one other perspective I find in the more conscious fathers I work with. This may feel a bit ethereal, but I think that if we parent with a deep breath and a clear and unfrightened mind, we find a special light that we carry with each of our children, a loving, gentle guide through the perils of each developmental stage, a light that keeps us connected, and carrying each other through these times. It is an aura that only that father and that child can see, and as long as it is bright enough to see, they know the other is there for them. Dads, you want to feel that light between you and your children. You want them to know that, through that light, they have a pillar they can rely on. In return, you are afforded the opportunity to bear witness to one of the greatest miracles: the blossoming of a child into a beautiful, unique, thriving adult.

Done right, that light is carried, and that connection bright, between the two of you for a lifetime. That, to me, is conscious fatherhood. [FROM THE HEART]

WHY HOPE IS TRUSTWORTHY by Alan Cohen My coaching client, Sara, had agreed to a business dinner with a fellow she found quite difficult to work with after she made the appointment. Now, the morning before the dinner, she was looking for a way to get out of it. “When I went to the store this morning, my car had trouble starting,” she told me. “When that happened, I found myself hoping it wouldn’t start so I would have an excuse to not show up for the meeting.” I told Sara, “You don’t have to create 18

a broken car to avoid the meeting. You can just cancel it if you like.”

happen?” In the answer is your guide to your likely best path.

“Yes,” she concurred. “Now I see that my hope for the non-starting car was showing me what I really wanted to do. I just needed to find the courage to do it.”

You don’t have to create adverse circumstances to find a reason to do what you wish to do or avoid what you do not wish to do. Just be honest. A caller phoned my radio show (hayhouseradio.com) and explained that after her messy divorce a few years earlier, she had put on a bunch of weight, and even though she had tried various diets and exercise regimes, she couldn’t get the weight

Business leader and philanthropist David Mahoney said, “Trust your hopes, not your fears.” If you have a difficult decision before you, ask yourself, “What am I hoping will

off. I asked her, “Is there any way you believe the extra weight serves you?” She thought for a moment and answered, “Since my divorce, I don’t really want to get involved with a man. Maybe on some level, I believe that the extra pounds make me less attractive and I won’t have to think about having a relationship.”

The key to getting what you hope for is to know that you are worthy to have it. Your hopes represent a pipeline to the place deep inside you that knows you deserve good.

I thanked her for her honesty and suggested, “If you don’t want to be with a man, you can just say ‘no.’ You don’t have to use the weight to speak for you. You can claim your choice directly.” The question, “What would you like to do?” is one of the hardest questions for many people to answer. We have been conditioned to think about what our parents, religion, spouse, boss or culture want us to do, leaving our true choice buried under a massive pile of “shoulds.” On the first day of a weekend seminar a fellow told me, “My ex-wife wants me to do one thing; my kids want me to do another, and my girlfriend is pushing me in another direction. I don’t know what I should do.” I asked him, “What would you like to do?” A stunned look washed over his face as he answered, “I never thought about that.” I told him to give that important question some thought and let me know what he came up with.

At the next day’s seminar meeting he stood and reported to the group, “Alan Cohen healed me yesterday! When I thought about what I really wanted to do, I got totally clear and found a path that was satisfying for me and would work for everyone as well.” I don’t claim any credit at all for healing that man. All I did was ask him what he really wanted to do. His honest answer opened the door for his awakening. Truth heals. We don’t always achieve the situation we are hoping for, but stating our intention definitely ups the chances to attract that result. We do best to state the experience we are hoping for and allow the universe to arrange the details. Rather than demanding the physical characteristics, age or income of your desired mate, you can state, “I want a relationship that is harmonious, mutually supportive, joyful and based on shared spiritual values.” That kind of request gives the universe far more latitude to bring you what you want than narrowing your hope down to specifics that leave out what’s really important.

is unattractive or detrimental at a distance. You can claim your right to your good without playing games or making excuses. Honesty is your best friend on your spiritual path. While telling the truth may be uncomfortable at times, if you are sincere, it will take you to where you want and need to be. Then you won’t have to just hope for your good. You will be living it. Alan Cohen is the bestselling author of the newly-released Spirit Means Business: The Way to Prosper Wildly without Selling Your Soul, illuminating how you can successfully merge your career and financial path with your spiritual life. He will present a program related to this book on the US Mainland (the West Coast) in August. The key to getting what you hope for is to know that you are worthy to have it. Your hopes represent a pipeline to the place deep inside you that knows you deserve good. That inner well of worth may be buried under years of training to the contrary, but it cannot be lost. It is there. The part of you that hopes for your good indicates that you remember you are here for a good purpose, you are loved, and the universe can and will deliver your blessings. Reality can be submerged, but never destroyed. Trusting your hopes and acting on them increases the size of that crucial pipeline such that it becomes easier and easier to tap into your worth and live from it. Acting on your hopes is the greatest investment you can make in yourself. You don’t have to manufacture problems as shields to keep what CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

THE LIFE-DAMAGING EFFECTS OF INVISIBLE FREQUENCIES by Phyllis Light, Ph.D Did you know that you are being hit by over 300,000 life-damaging frequencies per minute in our crazy, high-tech world? Did you know that these frequencies—even though invisible—are wreaking havoc on your health and well-being? Yes, we are being unbelievably challenged in countless ways by life in a modern, frequency-filled world. Dr. George Yao, a chemical and aerospace engineer and Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, studied the effects of electromagnetic fields and frequencies on the human body throughout the 1960s and 1970s. When I connected with Dr. Yao over 30 years ago, my prayers to heal myself of some unknown condition that was making me feel exhausted and incapacitated were finally answered. I learned from him that exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and other high-tech frequencies created stress, irritability, depression and immune system disorders, along with potentially severe fatigue and exhaustion—like I was experiencing. Dr. Yao determined that “The typical American gets electromagnetic radiation up to 200 million times more intense than his ancestors took in from the sun, stars and other natural sources.” This was before the advent of cellphones, GPS and wireless internet, which now blanket our planet with far more frequencies than those in the world that Dr. Yao knew. I have met people who have moved to more rural locales to avoid the chaos and intensity they felt in city living. However, they continued to have cellphone, satellite TV and Wi-Fi frequencies filling their homes, so their attempt to escape the city chaos proved futile. Here is the reason why the frequencies are so detrimental: Every living creature—humans and animals both—has an energy field around their physical body, the “etheric body,” which is actually the blueprint for the physical body, structuring it on an ongoing basis. Whenever the energy field has problems or sustains damage in any way, the physical follows suit. This is a universal principle and “written in stone.” The key to all healing is to restore the energetic blueprint around the physical body to normal. As an aside, to make this clearer, all of our thoughts and feelings have an impact on our etheric body. If we continually think negatively about life, our ability to express ourselves, how burdened we feel, etc., then those negative thoughts will eventually 24

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

impact the physical. Maybe we have shoulder or back pain from all the burdens we feel we are carrying. Maybe we get frequent sore throats because our throat chakra, the center for selfexpression, is ailing. In other words, the energetic realm always impacts the physical. As a psychic and healer, I can go into the etheric body to see— and clear—any negative messages we are sending the physical, to produce positive change and healing. Regarding the frequencies, they too are impacting us energetically. They disrupt the functioning of the etheric body, creating breaks in it and other sorts of damage. They weaken the etheric body over time, which actually creates the physical body aging faster. They cause us to have headaches, eyestrain, fatigue, immune system disorders, as well as an increase in cardiovascular disease. In 2005, the World Health Organization, officially identified a new disorder for people who strongly feel the effects of EMFs: “EHS,” or Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity.” The symptoms most commonly experienced include dermatological symptoms (redness, tingling, and burning sensations), as well as neurasthenic and vegetative symptoms (fatigue, tiredness, concentration difficulties, dizziness, nausea, heart palpitation, and digestive disturbances).1 What they don’t realize is that all of us are impacted adversely by the frequencies; some are just more sensitive than others. When the frequencies pound on you every day, they impair your energy field’s normal functioning and create physical problems as a result. Some people may be more energetically sensitive or have a genetic makeup that creates a hyper-vulnerability, but over time, we all suffer the consequences from this relentless frequency bombardment. One interesting phenomenon I believe to be frequency-related is the fact that many people are getting prematurely bald (we see it in men, but women are having this too), because the frequencies mess with the hormonal system and make us age faster. Because so many men are balding a lot earlier now than they did in the past, “bald is in,” that is, it has become a fashion statement of sorts. However, this is not a natural phenomenon. It is due to the damage people are sustaining to their endocrine systems from the daily bombardment of life-damaging frequencies. I’m not writing this to generate fear, but more so, to educate you about the challenges to our health and well-being we face today, and let you know of the need to find the best solutions to these problems for yourself and your loved ones. They exist. Be sure to “ask, and ye shall receive.” Phyllis Light, Ph.D., is an author, expert in “Telepathic Healing,” pioneer in subtle energy protection, and creator of Rejuvenizer®—protective and healing devices designed to combat the ills of life in a high-tech world. those aspects are simplicity, directness and honesty. The tea ceremony first appeared in Japan in a time of war. For this reason, the cups selected do not match, and symbolize that though we are different we are one. The same idea applies to the mix of flowers that are chosen to decorate the ceremonial space. This type of aesthetic is known as “wabi-sabi,” which is centered around the acceptance of imperfection and seeing its beauty. In this way, drinking matcha is not only an experience for the taste buds or a social gathering, but it is a type of communal meditation for the host and the guests.

MATCHA

for Mind, Body and Spirit by Janae Jean Matcha, or literally “powdered tea,” has become a trendy ingredient for lattés, baked goods and even savory meals. It is a variety of green tea that has a long history and is important to the ceremonial life of Zen practitioners. This emerald-colored tea comes in a variety of grades for ceremonial and culinary purposes. Matcha offers the drinker a variety of benefits for physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Photography by Janae Jean

Matcha is a unique part of the Japanese cultural arts, though its roots go back to the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618-907), where pulverized tea was made into bricks for storage. During the Song Dynasty (9601279) in China, in China drinking powdered tea became popular and elaborately glazed tea bowls became popular as well. These bowls, narrow at the bottom with a wide top were shaped to accommodate the bamboo tea whisks. There is a strong relationship between the careful cultivation of the tencha (tea leaves) that becomes matcha and the way matcha is served. While matcha is available and enjoyed in various forms in the West and in Japan, its ceremonial presentation is a type of meditation that is designed to bring people together, as well as teaching being present. There are three main schools of the tea ceremony which all share a common ancestry, however, there are other variations as well. Sen no Rikyu is considered the father of the Japanese “Way of Tea.” He lived in what is now known as the Osaka Prefecture of Japan during the 1500s. It was from his teachings about tea that have led to the important aspects of the tea ceremony;

Since the tea leaves used to make matcha are from such high-quality plants, it’s the most potent way to get the health benefits from drinking green tea. Along with vitamin C, vitamin A and potassium, matcha is a rich source of the antioxidants called “polyphenols” which have been linked to heart disease prevention, cancer prevention, blood sugar regulation, reduced blood pressure and free radical neutralization, which prevents the effects of aging. One polyphenol called EGCG has been shown to boost metabolism, and slow and even stop the growth of cancer cells. Like all true teas, matcha contains caffeine. In fact, a cup of matcha contains three times as much caffeine as a cup of steeped tea, and about the same amount as a cup of brewed coffee. However, the way the caffeine in matcha impacts our brains and bodies in a different manner than it does in other caffeinated beverages is due to the natural occurring amino acid in matcha, L-theanine, which induces relaxation and actually increases the quality of sleep. Matcha gives us a boost like coffee but without the coffee jitters. Since matcha is a powdered form of tea, you are drinking the actual tea leaves when you drink it. This makes it different than other forms of tea which are steeped. For this reason, it is important to do some research about your tea and its quality before drinking it. Most experts recommend looking for Japanese-grown matcha. To fully enjoy a bowl of matcha, choose a ceremonial grade, which will provide you with the highest nutritional value and best taste. Drinking matcha regularly provides you with many nutritional benefits. It has been proven to improve mental function and calm our nerves. When you sip your bowl of matcha, be mindful and enjoy. I invited my dad to brunch one recent Sunday afternoon. We haven’t always had the closest relationship, but fortunately it has strengthened with time. After a delicious meal and rich conversation, we were saying our goodbyes in the restaurant parking lot when a beautiful white butterfly fluttered our way. It danced in front of us, then circled us multiple times. It was obvious, at least to me, that it was trying to get our attention. I knew there was nothing random about its presence.

us know she is here with us.” A split second after those words spilled from my mouth, I cringed. Why did I just say that out loud?

“Look at that,” I said. “Mom is letting

Faint hope, I guess. I braced myself for Dad’s reply. “Yes, she is,” he said with sincerity in his voice as his eyes followed the butterfly’s path. I was stunned. And joyful beyond measure.

ing signs or other information from the spirit world, Dad laughed, joked, or scoffed. For personal and religious reasons, he could never understand why I had passed on a surefire career as an opera singer in favor of one as a psychic medium. In his defense, what parent wouldn’t find that incomprehensible? That’s why those three words from him were such a breakthrough in his mindset and in our relationship. He knew that since Mom’s death in 1999, when I was just 14 years old, I had believed that white butterflies were

a sign from her that she was with me. I didn’t know on this day in the parking lot how much Dad truly believed it, but it appeared he had at least unlocked his mind and heart to entertain the possibility that she was responsible. And that is exactly how every opportunity to receive a sign from someone who has crossed over to the next life must begin. Each day, spirits are trying to connect with us to help us make decisions, find meaning in our lives, or navigate through difficult times. They try to create that link in a multitude of ways, such as with animals, electricity, music, dates, numbers, dreams, and coins. They repeatedly dangle these things right in front of us, and though we see them, we usually consider them nothing more than ordinary objects or coincidences that have no significant meaning in our lives. That’s because we don’t know how to view them as something more, or we simply don’t believe. How often have you made a decision based on a gut feeling? Isn’t the result of your decision usually the one you had hoped for or expected? And how often have you said to yourself, “Something is telling me I should [or shouldn’t] do this?” That “something” is your innate psychic ability, commonly known as intuition. It is a God-given gift that is seized upon by the spirit world to help guide you on your earthly journey. What we often fail to realize is that even though a dead person’s body is gone, their spirit is not. Their soul lives, not just in heaven but on earth. Sure, we may comfort ourselves by saying that we know they are around us or that we feel their energy, but do we truly believe they are present in our lives to the extent that they can communicate directly with us from the beyond at any moment? They are, and they can. If your first reaction is “I need to see it to believe it,” make a couple of adjust-

ments to that phrase and you’ll be right on track: “I need to believe it to see it.” One day, when I was trying to navigate through some difficulties in my life and desperately longed for my mom, I asked her to show me a sign that she was with me. Believing that she would, and paying close attention to my surroundings, I was expecting to see the usual white butterfly. But instead, I received something much more definitive. The next day I found myself driving behind a car with a license plate that read “YVONNE” — my mom’s name. Not only is that a relatively uncommon

In a world fraught “with uncertainty,

people are often searching for guidance in an earthly form but struggling to find it, so they are turning more and more to the “other side” for help.” name, but there are millions of registered vehicles in the vast state of California and only one with that plate. How did I end up in that exact place on the road at that precise moment behind that car the day after I had asked for a sign? Coincidence? No way. I think my chances of winning the lottery might have been better. Signs from the spirit world are literally everywhere. Fortunately, I was in a frame of mind that enabled me to recognize one.

struggling to find it, so they are turning more and more to the “other side” for help. I witness it daily from those who reach out to me for readings or advice, many of them desperate to connect with a loved one who has passed. But the good news is that you don’t need me to make that connection. Yes, with a gifted medium as a conduit, communication between you and the spirit world will be much clearer. But neither I nor any other medium can be that conduit for everyone all the time. That is why if you believe in the intuition you were born with and are open to the possibilities, the spirits will take care of the rest directly with you. OVERCOME YOUR NEGATIVE SELF by C. Scot Giles, D.Min., DNGH

Most people find themselves troubled by negative thoughts. One of the major missions of the human brain is to keep its owner safe. Therefore, evolution has shaped its responses toward that end. Fear makes a creature cautious. Cautious creatures tend to survive. Creatures that are not cautious tend to become food for larger creatures. Therefore, living things that experience fear and other dark emotions readily tend to be those who grow into adults, reproduce and 28

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

pass on the genes that encourage the experience of fear. Because of this, at this point in human evolution, a negative expectation is the default setting in the human brain. Hypnotists call this the “the negative brain.” Animals tend to develop what are known as “speciesspecific defense reactions” when confronted with a particular threat in the moment, and this works well for them. However, human beings are capable of reacting to a perceived threat at other times. In short, we

have an evolved skill in blowing fears out of proportion. If you have ever gone to your doctor only to have the physician suggest that they had better run some tests, you have probably felt this phenomenon. You likely ran home, fired up a search engine and proceeded to do mental violence to yourself by pondering terrifying multiple worst-case outcomes. In the brain, the neurological structures that are most involved in

the expectation that something bad might happen are the two amygdalae, which are located behind the pituitary gland. Once stimulated, these structures release hormones that prepare the body to fight a threat, avoid a threat or to hide from a threat (the so-called fight/flight/freeze response.) They are powerful and stay active for a long time.

The human “unconscious mind

is the greatest goal-achieving mechanism ever evolved. Once it accepts something as true, it will shape how you think and feel in an effort to achieve it.” The result of all this is that negative thoughts and feelings are the easiest sort of feelings and thoughts to have and all of us fight against letting them run our lives. The thing to ‘get’ is that because our brain easily expects bad things to happen, it is actually distorting our perception of the world. We see things far more negatively than they actually are. We worry more about things than we realistically should. This is why motivational speaker “Zig” Ziglar broke the word “fear” into the acronym, False Evidence Appearing Real. All of us struggle with our negative selves unless we have learned to practice some corrective discipline. My professional hypnotism practice has a strong specialization in helping people who are living with cancer

or other scary diagnoses. I always explain the negative brain evolution has given us and encourage clients “not to get out ahead of the data.” There are a 1001 bad things that might happen but most of them are not going to. However, unless one is very careful to keep the negative brain in check, it practically takes over. When we spend a lot of time expecting bad things to happen, that expectation makes its way into our unconscious mind. The human unconscious mind is the greatest goal-achieving mechanism ever evolved. Once it accepts something as true, it will shape how you think and feel in an effort to achieve it. On the positive side, if your unconscious mind expects good things to happen it will help you achieve them in many ways. It will boost your mood, resilience and creativity. Helpful intuitions may suddenly appear and other enhancing experiences may be found. This is perhaps part of the mechanism behind the popular Law of Attraction. To a real degree, you get what you expect and focus on. On the negative side, if your fears have been indulged to the point where your unconscious mind has come to accept a negative expectation, all the powerful abilities of your own deeper mind will be enlisted in helping you fail. You will not see opportunities, energy will evaporate and you may find yourself paralyzed. This is why some people find trying to attract good things into their lives by controlling their thoughts very difficult; their unconscious mind interferes. Hypnotists call this the “Critical Faculty.” It is the part of your mind that determines what gets into your unconscious mind and what is rejected. When you consult a hypnotist what you are paying the practitioner for is gaining control over exactly this process. Therapists do much the same in a different way,

and most self-help methods also have this as a primary goal. What disciplines might you have to keep your negative self under control? Certainly learning internal skills like hypnotism, mindfulness, yoga and similar things are excellent approaches. Another way is to become vigilant about what you focus on in an effort to keep a negative expectation from making its way into your unconscious mind. Positive distraction works well for this. Instead of ruminating on what might happen, get out in the sunshine, lose yourself in music or art, go running or walking or anything else that will occupy your consciousness so that negativity does not sink into the deeper process of your mind. Remember, your negative self is driven by fear. However, you experience that fear because of an evolutionary trick. It’s probably not nearly as real as you believe. The Rev. Dr. C. FULL MOON JUNE 17, 2019 Abundant Knowledge and Wisdom by Donna Stellhorn This month, we have the Gemini/ Sagittarius Full Moon. This energy falls on the Galactic Center, the source of all knowledge and wisdom. This month any questions you put out to the Universe will be answered. You may hear your answer in a random conversation, by flipping on the TV, or in a dream. Focus on asking quality questions; better questions will give more useful answers. If you’ve been feeling stuck, then this month ask different questions, and you’ll find the way through. In this Full Moon, the Moon is in Sagittarius past the retrograding Jupiter. As Jupiter backs up you may feel less interest in what you’ve been studying or a project you’ve been working on. For those of you who’ve been in school, this marks your Summer holiday. However, if you’ve committed to summer school or you’re not on a regular school schedule you may find it challenging to motivate yourself to sit down and do the work. This Full Moon highlights the natural conflict between wanting to travel and 30

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

the comfort of staying home. You may feel pulled in two directions. The solution is to stay present. When you’re at home, feel the joy of being at home where you know where all your stuff is. When you’re traveling, be in the moment of that new place. If you stay present you will know when to be at home, when to leave and when to return. The Sun is making hard aspects to Saturn and Pluto suggesting that success comes from forging a new path. Try new things this month that pull you out of your comfort zone. You may notice changes in your career on a large industry-scale telling you to adjust longterm plans. This can also indicate you need to accept the changes already underway. Don’t pine for the past but embrace the new world you live in. And finally, there’s an interesting configuration with Mars opposing Pluto and Saturn making semi-sextiles and inconjuncts to the Sun/Moon opposition. Some would call this configuration a variation of the “treasure chest” aspect.

In this case, it’s like a gift in a long narrow box that you excitedly open to find it’s just a necktie and you don’t wear neckties. Try not to be disappointed on the uselessness of the gift. Instead, focus on your choices. You can refuse the gift, return the gift to the store for credit, or re-gift the tie to someone who needs it and will appreciate it. Opportunities will be like this all month. Be ready to make choices as opportunities come to you. Here are my predictions for each sign.

ARIES The light of the Full Moon highlights education and travel opportunities. This is a good month to look at where you want to go to school in the fall. You may want to look into self-study programs online as well. This is a good time for writing and publishing. You can expand your social media presence. Travel is protected and can bring enjoyment. Travel to new places will give you wisdom and help you feel spiritually connected to your greater

purpose. Even short-distance travel is beneficial this month.

TAURUS The Full Moon illuminates your finances, bringing you opportunities to expand investments, passive income and business income sources. You can also help a spouse or partner increase their income through your encouragement. This is a good time to organize banking information and get up to date with filing, storing or shredding documents. Financial information and opportunities come when you’re listening for them. Put yourself in the millionaire mindset and you’ll find what you seek. GEMINI Relationships and friendships are highlighted this month as the Full Moon brings new people into your sphere. You can expand your circle of helpful people. Some will bring you information on new opportunities in areas you’ve been looking for, such as business and personal growth. Your existing relationships improve also and you have some time to spend with people you care about. You receive several compliments from unexpected sources which can boost your confidence. CANCER Your overall energy improves as the Full Moon moves through your house of health. You can receive good treatment from medical professionals and find new solutions both through conventional sources and as gifts from the Universe. You can make deep connections between emotional hurts and physical problems which help you clear issues once and for all. This month getting outside, breathing good air and seeing beauty help you in many ways. Sleep improves as you add peaceful sounds to the bedroom. LEO Children and creativity are highlighted this month. You may be spending more time around young people or be called upon to help out where kids are involved. You are surrounded by inspiration for creative projects, and there are sources to assist you at your beck and call. You seem to have been touched by a muse. People fawn over

your creations, paying you compliments (and may pay money). You may want to launch a side business focusing on the spiritual or creative passions you have.

VIRGO Home and family are under the light of the Full Moon now and this brings positive, problem-solving energy for you to use where you wish. Family relations improve as some disagreements are settled and feelings are soothed. If you’re moving this month, it is a good move and will bring many benefits to you. Those Virgo natives who are staying put would do well to shift the energy at home by decluttering and moving out what you don’t need. Choose what you want to let go of and new energy will flow in. LIBRA This Full Moon brings the spotlight on your communication, writing, teaching and how you talk to yourself. This month, you will see the strong connection between positive thinking and opportunities arriving at your door. There is energy around your vehicle. If you’re looking for a new car this is a good time to do it. Also, check out new forms of transportation, or at least do some walking and enjoy the fine weather. This month, you will receive compliments on your communication skills or your writing. SCORPIO The Full Moon falls in your house of finances this month bringing you opportunities to expand your income and money received. Note that spending can also increase if you’re not paying attention. There is potential for a raise from a job or expanded income from a side business. Your luck with money is strong now and what you might have thought was a loss turns out to be just fine. You are filled with great ideas for making money but may not have the time to implement so write them down for later. SAGITTARIUS This is your Full Moon and the beginning of your lunar year. New opportunities present themselves and you may see many roads you can take in the areas of career, relationships and home. Consider your big goals and the

underlying “why” when you make your choices about what direction to take. Your confidence is high and others rally to support your choices. You’ve wanted to make a leap for a while and now the time is here. Spread your wings and fly.

CAPRICORN This Full Moon lights up the shadow side of you. You suddenly see how you’ve been blocking your own success. The way forward becomes clear and easy. Wisdom flows through you and you feel connected to the Universe. Magic works well for you now so light a candle or two and state your wishes to the Universe. When you lie down to sleep ask the questions you want to be answered in the morning. You have more protection now than at any other time of the year. You can take your calculated risks. AQUARIUS The Full Moon highlights your future bringing you people who can benefit you on your path. Let your intuition guide you this month as you decide what to do with your free time. Investigate groups, organizations and movements. Find new places to visit in your town. Reach out and do coffee with new people you’ve met. Each contact can open an important door. Also, give your technology a little TLC. You may need to upgrade a computer or tablet. Keep an eye on your phone, or it may get very wet. PISCES This Full Moon illuminates your career. You are more visible now and can find your way to a better position either within your company, outside the company, or building your own business. Steps for this transition are clear now, and you feel support from the Universe for your choices. Compliments and encouragement come in from business contacts. A door is opened for you by a colleague or acquaintance. Your social media presence increases; your reputation shines. Donna Stellhorn is an astrologer, Feng Shui expert and author of 15 books. COSMIC DAILY WEATHER June 2019 by Bernadette Evans

Overview This month, we celebrate the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This day marks the first day of summer. The days are longer, and we get to play in the sun longer because of the later sunsets. In the Southern Hemisphere, this day heralds the start of the winter. The New Moon is in Gemini this month on June 3. Communication is the focus. You may be drawn to writing, or speaking or socializing with others. Listening, understanding and accepting others’ viewpoints can go a long way. Neptune will be squaring the Sun and Moon, so there is the potential for confusion and misunderstandings. There is also the possibility of getting some brilliant insights via the cosmos. The Full Moon is in Sagittarius this month on June 17. Full Moons usually mark the release of something. It may be an end to communicating with certain individuals in your life because you had to speak your truth. Sagittarius is also associated with the law, maybe you’re dealing with a court case. There are as many variations on this theme as there are interpretations. Just know that there are cycles, and sometimes the wheel of fortune is turning in your favor and the next time it isn’t. The point is, it will return to grace you with good fortune once more, just be patient. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete her orbit through the 12 signs, approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is Void-of-Course (VoC), it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets until it leaves the sign it’s in. At these times, it can be difficult to get focused and accomplish tasks; you may want to relax, meditate or do something where your focus is directed inward. Don’t try to get a new project off the ground when the Moon is void. If you want to find out more about the Void of Course Moon, check out Moontracks.com. The times below are listed in Central Daylight Time.

Saturday, June 1 When the Moon conjuncts Venus you instinctively gravitate to the friendships that bring you the most joy. You may also be drawn to create something artistic, as you admire beauty in all its forms. A word of caution, there’s a chance of overspending today, as well as indulging a little too much at your favorite restaurant. Have fun, just remember moderation is your friend. Moon VoC at 5:53 p.m.

Sunday, June 2 The Venus-Pluto trine can bring a level of intensity to your relationships today. You may experience more depth on all levels—emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually. This could be the catalyst to transform for change in your relationships. Moon enters the sign of Gemini at 6:48 a.m.

Monday, June 3 Communication is highlighted with the New Moon in Gemini. Be clear when speaking with others as the Sun and Moon will both square Neptune, and there could be some misunderstandings. It’s a good idea to go over any

contracts before you sign them. New Moon at 5:02 a.m.

Tuesday, June 4 You may feel the need for some added excitement in your life when the Moon sextiles Uranus. Nothing too wild, just enough to rouse yourself and maybe others in your circle out of their comfort zone. Mercury enters the sign of Cancer at 3:05 p.m. When Mercury is in Cancer, your thoughts are colored by how you feel. Moon VoC at 10:42 a.m. until 11:17 a.m. when it enters the sign of Cancer.

Wednesday, June 5 Emotions are heightened with the Moon-Mars conjunction. On the one hand, you have the courage to stand up for what you believe in. On the other hand, you may fly off the handle and quickly lose your temper.

Thursday, June 6 Early in the morning, there is an opportunity to nurture your work and personal relationships with the Moon-Venus sextile. Then, by the afternoon when the Moon moves into Leo, the energy starts to shift. What do you enjoy doing? What brings you joy? Children are always in the moment and able to express their joy. Be in the moment and feel that joy. Moon VoC at 9:10 a.m. until 2:16 p.m. when it enters the sign of Leo.

Friday, June 7 You may find a solution to a problem that had you stumped for a while with the Mercury-Uranus sextile. There may be an element of surprise to the day, so enjoy the detours today. You never know where the road will take you.

Saturday, June 8 You may be feeling conflicted or motivated; it depends on the lens you’re looking through when the Moon squares Venus. SPRING INTO HEALTH with Seasonal Veggies and Exotic Spices by Betsy Bruns Father’s Day may have you thinking of summer grilling. As June bridges the final days of Spring with the Summer Solstice, we are featuring seasonal ingredients and an unusual spice that will play with your appetite and taste buds in surprising ways. In the Midwest, asparagus and peas are in season and can be purchased fresh from local growers and co-ops, as well as from your local grocer. Asparagus is in full bounty from April to June and is a health-promoting food. Low in calories, rich in fiber, water and antioxidants, it nourishes your body and aids in weight loss. Asparagus is also a prebiotic, which helps to keep your microbiome healthy. Peas are in season from June to August. While some might think them boring, they have a special benefit you might be delighted to know about. Peas, specifically their protein, have been shown to reduce the secretion of ghrelin, the hunger hormone. That means eating more peas just might make you feel fuller longer, which may translate to weight loss.

3 garlic cloves, minced 2 ½ cups Arborio rice Kosher or sea salt (to taste) Freshly ground black pepper (to taste) Saffron threads (1 large pinch) or ¼ tsp saffron powder ½ cup white wine ½ pound asparagus, trimmed and cut into 2-inch lengths 1 cup green peas ½ cup fresh basil, chopped Heat ½ cup broth in a large skillet or saucepan. Add the onion, leek and garlic and sauté for three minutes. Add the rice and sauté for five minutes. Keep stirring the rice as you sauté to keep it from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Season with salt and black pepper.

Kala Namak, or black salt, has a sulfurous aroma and this exotic spice lends an eggy flavor to any dish, especially our egg-less egg salad. Black salt can be found in some health foods stores, Indian markets or online.

Heat eight cups broth in a separate pot. Crumble in the saffron threads (or powder) and stir to dissolve. Some threads may remain undissolved, but that’s okay. Add the wine to the rice and cook until the rice absorbs the liquid. Add a ladleful of broth to the rice and stir again until the liquid is absorbed. Stir in the asparagus, peas and basil. Keep adding hot broth a ladleful at a time to the rice until all the broth is gone and the rice is creamy. The entire process takes about 20 to 25 minutes, and makes 6 servings.

SAFFRON RISOTTO WITH ASPARAGUS AND PEAS Traditional risotto is laden with butter and cheese. This version is low in fat, but the creaminess and flavor remain.

EGG-LESS EGG SALAD This dish is deliciously deceiving. It looks and tastes like egg salad without the eggs or saturated fat and cholesterol.

8 ½ cups vegetable broth 1 large onion, chopped 1 large leek, white part only, thinly sliced

1 can chickpeas, drained (1 ½ cups) ¼ cup diced onion, finely chopped, or to taste

3 tablespoons pickle relish 3 tablespoons low-fat dairy and egg-free mayonnaise 3 teaspoons yellow mustard 1 teaspoon Kala Namak (black salt), or to taste ¼ teaspoon turmeric ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ cup green peas Mash chickpeas with a fork or potato masher, leaving some chunkiness. Stir in onion, relish, mayonnaise substitute, mustard, black salt, turmeric and garlic powder. Fold in green peas and give a final stir. Check the seasonings and adjust according to your taste. Refrigerate for at least one hour. Serve over seasonal leafy greens, in a wrap with your choice of veggies or with toast points.
