PUBLISHER’S LETTER

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE W

elcome to the February issue of Conscious Community Magazine! This issue is about unconditional love—the one love that connects all of us and expands our perception of life. This is the one love that connects everyone and everything on the planet and gives us the strength and power to do what we are designed to do. This is the love that does not judge, nor does it come from the head—but from your heart!

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

In this issue, you will find articles that will expand your consciousness of love, self-love, and the ego. Alan Cohen reminds us in his monthly From the Heart column that we only find the love of our life when we learn to love ourselves and that “whole people create whole relationships.” Betsy Bruns offers some fun and healthful food ideas that help us to show ourselves self-love by nourishing our bodies with a whole-food plant-based diet. Also, Stephanie Jarmuth explains the Conscious, Subconscious, and the Ego, and how they influence our lives—even when we are not aware of it—and how we can use them to improve our lives. Additionally, astrologer and Feng Shui expert Donna Stellhorn offers Feng Shui tips that will help welcome in prosperity in 2020! For those who are not on the Conscious Community Magazine email list or did not see the email about the upcoming changes in the magazine, we decided to spend December researching and strategizing to better serve our community. Thus, we didn’t print a January 2020 issue. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. We are so glad to be back this month! We love Conscious Community Magazine, and hope you do too. So, if you are interested in its long-term survival, we welcome any assistance we can get and will keep putting in hard work and our best efforts to keep sailing into the future. If you would like to join us in this endeavor, please don’t hesitate to give me a call at 847-966-1110, or send an email to: Kasia@ConsciousCommunityMagazine. Your valued input and brilliant ideas have been at the root of all we have accomplished during the past 40 years. Thank you for your continued support! The Best,

Kasia Szumal

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q: I’ve been accused of being “judgy” which surprises me. This brings up the question as to how we know when we’re judging someone, have attachments, or still have our own unhealed places that require further attention? — Judgy Judy A: Dear Judgy Judy, This is an excellent topic to visit during these times of contrasting divisiveness. If more people pondered this question, our seeming divisions would heal because our focus would be placed upon ourselves, where we can effect change, rather than on others whom we have no control over. Conscious energy management prompts us to detach and pay attention to the feelings in our bodies and how our mind reels when we encounter something that’s contrary to what we think or feel. If an encounter sets the mind perseverating in loops long afterwards or generates a strong physical/mental/emotional reaction that causes us to want to lash out to change someone’s mind, we’ve come upon an issue showing where we’re attached, unwhole or judging another. These feelings are cues to dive deeper inside ourselves to address the energy of our own negativity and need to change another by seeking a new perspective that’s more balanced with less charge. When we’re triggered by another, the energy that we feel inside is ours to own, not because of them. They’re the symptom and we are the cause. Nothing can trigger us in our balanced and whole

places because that energy is confident and smooth so there’s nothing to snag or hook into. Being unattached doesn’t mean that we just throw our hands up, carelessly allowing injustice or wrongs to run rampant and unchallenged in the world. It means that we still care, speak up and act— grounding and rooting what’s right and just. At the same time, we’re unattached and unmoved by contrasting beliefs and the feelings of others. It means that we don’t project energy upon others because we’re right and they’re wrong. The bridge comes when we approach with curiosity and compassion as to why we each might feel so differently—seeking understanding for what we can’t effect, what we judge, have energy about, or don’t understand. Q: I often encounter homeless people begging for money, which makes me uncomfortable. I feel conflicted between wanting to help but being concerned that they’re scammers, or using the money for drugs or alcohol. How might I reconsider this? — Conflicted Giver A: Dear Conflicted Giver, Many encounter these situations with varying degrees of discomfort. It’s an individual decision as to how we choose to respond. Options depend upon whether we’re willing to offer money or have a personal policy against doing so. Do for another what you would have done for you. There are many who have

fallen on hard times and are homeless due to job loss, substance abuse or some untimely misfortune. Street people say they feel invisible because people don’t acknowledge them. As conscious, compassionate people, I suggest acknowledging their presence (if it feels safe) with eye contact, a smile, and/or a blessing such as “God Bless” so we don’t lose our sense of humanity by closing our eyes and treating them as if they are less than us. There are also many with mental health issues or addictions. I advise caution with these interactions when people are talking to themselves or seem under the influence. We must care for ourselves first. Putting ourselves out there when something doesn’t feel right can put us in danger. This raises the question as to whether to give money that may be used for drugs or alcohol. We don’t get to decide if someone we tip may be using that money to buy alcohol, so why would we be in judgment of those who are on the street? I can understand why someone may want alcohol to either warm themselves on a cold night or take the edge off the pain of being homeless. Again, I try to put myself in their shoes. I prefer to consider ALL with equal compassion because living on the streets is hard— regardless of the reason. When we’re willing to give and may be walking where we might be approached by people asking for alms, I suggest placing money in various easy to access pockets in advance for ease of giving without retrieving our wallet, which makes us vulnerable to people who may be swindlers. We can also offer to offer them food instead to ensure that they don’t go hungry. Alecia Rice integrates higher concepts with wisdom to bring forth balance, perspective and clarity. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

ADVANCED SPIRITUAL RETREAT

DOUGLAS BENTLEY AT FLOWERING HEART CENTER by Theresa Puskar

“I was a very adamant seeker, so much so that it completely hindered my spiritual growth. There was a constant obsession to get somewhere, to achieve something. It was such a huge hindrance, but for years, I couldn’t see it! At a certain point, I had shifts that happened to me where I saw the truth of what I am. It was so extraordinary and so commonsense all at the same time, that it halted the one, horrible act of seeking.” Every once in a while, I hear a spiritual teacher speak, and I know that I’ve just been picked up by my next major transport truck, as I hike along the bumpy road Theresa Puskar, Douglas Bentley and Kasia Szumal of my spiritual path. That trucker races me past the short, arduous distances I would have otherwise trekked one foot in front of the other. I 8

am spared the exhaustion and deeper blisters that more painfully etch themselves between my toes in my well–worn hiking boots. I experienced this with Dr. David R. Hawkins, then again with Eckhart Tolle and Sri Bhagavan—and now, about six years later, with Doug Bentley. He opened the evening with the statement above, and I was aghast. He references the “deeply committed, adamant seeker” which I drive and pride myself to be, as a hindrance to my spiritual growth. Wait a second. I thought my commitment and passion would get me where I need to go. I have a great deal vested in my belief that my adamant seeking will ultimately set me free! Not so? Despite my ego’s massive resistance, when I first heard Doug make this statement, I knew that he was right. “If I build myself up with another spiritual seeking [modality], I am still in prison—I just now added a yoga mat into my cell!” I probably own too many barely broken–in yoga mats or barely– read books. While some part of me doesn’t like where this is

going at all, another deeper knowing within me sees that he has hit on something profound…something I need to hear!

Doug has a long history with Oneness University, as he spent 10+ years as a monk with them in India. He headed up the American student body. For those of you who are new to my column, Oneness University hosted a month-long Deepening Program that I participated in in 2013. Doug was a devotee of the founders, Sri Bhagavan and Sri Amma, and spent a great deal of time under their one–on–one tutelage. From the moment I met him, I was moved by his spiritual commitment and his innate ability to speak the Truth in a way that was dynamic, wise and very practical. “The path to freedom is the path to falling out of thinking.” Doug explained that the more we live in the present moment and witness our lives, the closer we are to letting go of the labels and how–to’s that only serve to distract us from ultimate awakening. He encouraged meditation as a means to cultivating the witness-self and learning to stay in the present, but he did not provide us with a spiritual prescription. In fact, he joked about the wasted time he spent with 10 years of seeking behind him. Once he realized that all that’s required was and is here now, he was able to be more present. “Until you are helpless, God remains helpless... Lord, I can’t go any further. You HAVE to help me. You have to take over my responsibilities… We should ask and be soaked in miracles, constantly experiencing the supreme consciousness… It is not enough to know that your God can do something; you must discover that your God will do it.” When Doug made these statements, I felt a huge sense of release. I can be helpless. In fact, he encouraged us to cultivate a very personal relationship with whomever or whatever we experience as our Divine. We can ask for evidence of His interaction in our lives. For so many years, I carried such shame around my lack of faith. I beat myself up emotionally for not trusting that my Divine had my back. Then when Doug stated that there is no shame in asking for that which we desire and expecting to see evidence of their fruition, I again felt a sense of release. It’s okay not to have full faith until we have evidence. It’s okay to question. “Be vastly, rawly, honest with yourself and where you are. Drop every moment and start each anew. Dying into each moment, allow yourself to crack wide open and experience all—your heart will crack open more and more.” Doug unlocked a treasure trove of wisdom at this event. He re–contextualized misconceptions that I have likely been carrying for lifetimes. Not only did he feed my soul, I felt a newfound sense of enthusiasm for relating to my Divine on a more personal level. Part of me was back in India again. However, I became acutely aware that there has been quite a journey from the time I left the plane in Chennai in 2013 to being picked up by trucker Doug this past weekend. There are a couple of good–sized cracks in my ego’s armor. There’s definitely more to come!

Here are some wonderful quotes from Doug that I am graced to share with you. I would encourage you to read them more than once. Many hold deep, deep truths that can be glossed over at first glance: “Let the mind tell you about the mind, which is being run by uncomfortable emotions.” “Thoughts are not YOUR thoughts… Any dialogues within your mind are the brain’s commentary. We have to be cool with that. Like a teething baby, we need not react, just know.” “When you breathe deeply, it brings up the kundalini and quiets the mind. Anxiety/shallow breathing does the opposite and as members of our society, we are all caught in the default of shallow breathing. With the use of breath, we fall into beingness.” “Awakening is not about knowing; it is only witnessing. There are no steps. It is falling out of the shackles of becoming more to fix, more to do, etc.” “Allow yourself to experience each moment vastly.” “Awaken to what is already happening. Witness the witness—that is it! There is nowhere to go and nothing to do!” “I must learn to be vulnerable to life’s situations and when others tap on that pain within me, allow myself to experience it. I, then, heal a layer between myself and the other person. Anybody can be my soulmate as long as I keep burning through the layers.” “Experience eating for the body as opposed to the mind.” “Nurture relationships. Every day, ask yourself, ‘What can I do that would make my mother’s day? Partner’s day? Child’s day? Boss’s day?’” “On healing: Let go of healing others, and let God do what God does.” Ten-four trucker Doug. Thanks for adding to the many miles along my soul’s journey! PROSPERITY FENG SHUI FOR 2020 by Donna Stellhorn

Welcome to the New Year, 2020. This is a powerful year where money and career opportunities can flow into your life. Here are five Feng Shui tips to help you welcome in money energy in 2020. Feng Shui is about creating an environment that supports your goals. You don’t need to keep a perfect house but clutter can disrupt the positive energy. If you want to increase the flow of money into your life, the first step is to make sure the money opportunities CAN flow in. Specifically, this means keeping entryways clear. Let’s start by defining the different entryways into a home.

LET THE MONEY ENERGY FLOW IN You may have multiple ways to enter your home and each of these has their 10

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2020

own energy. There’s the front door which represents all new opportunities coming into your life. There’s the side or back door that attracts opportunities you’ve been expecting, for example, the raise you get every year at your job or your annual tax refund check. You may have a way into the house through the garage which leads through a laundry room into the kitchen. This entry attracts opportunities from close friends and family. And finally, you may have a door leading into a mudroom with another door leading into the home. Often this door is next to a formal front door and it attracts new opportunities as a front door would. It may be cold where you are and that means snow boots, coats and hats filling the entryways. Make sure you only have those items you really need to

keep your entryway clear of clutter. Take the excess items and store them away. Every week or so do a check to make sure items are not blocking the inflow of positive energy.

WELCOME CAREER OPPORTUNITIES When you’re looking for career opportunities or new clients for your business consider getting a new welcome mat. Toss out your old worn mat and replace it with something fresh—and practical. Look for a welcome mat made of natural materials like bamboo or rubber. It can say “welcome,” or it may have a decorative design. Avoid mats that have pictures on them of things you wouldn’t like to step on like flowers, bunnies or the American flag.

ARE YOU A CAT PERSON?

CELEBRATE THE METAL RAT YEAR

Consider using a traditional Feng Shui cure for attracting wealth, the Lucky Money Cat. You may be familiar with this beckoning cat figurine sitting on his haunches waving his paw as he calls in money. These lucky cats (called ManekiNeko in Japan) come in many colors but metallic gold is the best for attracting money. He may have a paw that moves (some are even solar-powered) or he may just have his hand up. His right hand may be raised or his left. Some are even banks that you can fill with coins. Place your Lucky Money Cat in your home office, living room or on the table by your front door. Have him face the door so he can call money opportunities to you.

On Jan. 25, we entered the Year of the Metal Rat. This is traditionally a year where people are focused on making money, building businesses and creating financial security. In fact, instead of “rat” think “squirrel.” It’s fast-moving energy with the desire to collect a lot of nuts. To activate this monetary energy, display a metal bowl filled with nuts in your living room or family room. (For those with nut allergies, you don’t have to use real nuts.) Goldtone bowls represent opportunities for large sums of money. Silvertone bowls attract luck for gaining sources of regular income.

FIND YOUR WEALTH CORNER There are many schools of Feng Shui. In the Bagua system, the wealth area of the house is the far left corner from the front door. If you’re standing at your front door with your back to the door and looking into the house, imagine you can see the far left corner of the entire house. This is your wealth corner. If you live in an apartment, this will be in the far left corner of your own apartment— not in the entire building. Notice what’s in this corner. If you have a bathroom there it’s good to add shells to protect you from money being flushed away. If you have your back door there, place a bowl to catch money leaving the house too quickly. If you have a TV there you may be missing opportunities due to inactivity. Once you’ve found your wealth corner it’s a good idea to keep clutter out of that corner. Place objects that help you attract money such as crystals, pictures of fish, and of course, you can add another Lucky Money Cat. Once you’ve made the changes in your home, it’s a good idea to refresh the energy each month. People often do this on new or full moons. At this time, shake out your welcome mat, dust off your Lucky Money Cat and clear out any clutter that has accumulated. May you have a joyful and prosperous year!

CONSCIOUSNESS, ENERGY, AND THE BODY by Carl Greer, PhD, PsyD

As you explore your health story, it will soon become clear that energy, feelings, and thoughts, both conscious and unconscious, are intertwined and can influence your physical health. For example, anxiety can cause heart arrhythmia and hyperventilation, while heart arrhythmia from atrial fibrillation can cause anxiety. Everything is interconnected within the matrix, the larger energy field we are all a part of and woven into energetically, and which is hidden from the conscious mind. 12

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2020

At the core of energy medicine, including shamanic approaches to healing, is the idea that there are energy fields surrounding and pervading the physical body, and that by working with these fields, you can improve your health and your body’s functioning. You might think of the physical body as encased by a mental/emotional body, which in turn is encased by a soul body and, beyond that, a luminous energy body—each body stacked like Russian nesting dolls, one within

the other. Energetic messages and archetypal energies present in the matrix may travel through a person’s luminous energy body to affect emotions and thoughts as well as cells, tissues, and organs. If it seems strange to think of your physical body as being encased by, what could be called your mind, it’s probably because most of us were taught that we experience these things within the brain. What if the mind, or personal consciousness, is not contained within this vital

organ but instead surrounds it, influencing it? Entertain this concept for now so that you can better understand how shamanic and Jungian traditions might mesh together and even fit well with other traditions, such as the notion of chakras. Science shows us that when we experience thoughts and feelings, areas in the brain associated with them are more active. You can observe that a person is feeling emotions if you look at a brain scan performed with an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine because the emotional activity is both chemical and electromagnetic in nature. However, you might not be able to determine exactly what emotion that person is feeling, or to which thoughts the emotion is connected. One way to think of thoughts and feelings is to imagine them as being energetic in nature and encoded with information. Thoughts and feelings are often intertwined. Let’s say you experience pleasure as you have the fleeting thought “I love eating chocolate.” The pleasurable sensation is associated with a rush of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Your brain’s experience of feeling and thinking about pleasure can be detected on an MRI. Although thoughts and feelings are associated with the mind, and therefore the brain, you might also say they are experienced energetically throughout the body and associated with hormones and neurotransmitters produced in the brain (and in the case of serotonin in the digestive system as well).

anger, can cause muscle tension in the neck or elsewhere in the body. Massage therapists will often say to a client, “Where in your body do you hold your tension?” Conceivably, you could be holding specific emotions, such as grief or anger, in a particular area of your body, too.

in order to have room for that light to enter into. So while I was eager to bring in healing light, I had to admit that the shamanic notion of an exchange of energies—taking something out before putting something in—had validity for me. See whether it has validity for you as you work with the practices in this book.

Shamanic practices work with removing and replacing the energy of these emotions. The shaman observes the disturbance in the energy field, removes energetic blockages, and brings healing energy into the empty space. This type of balancing work mirrors the idea of removing toxins from the body and replenishing it with healthy foods. Removing an emotional stressor from your life and bringing in an emotionally replenishing habit might balance your energy and lead to physical healing.

Be open to the notions of energy bodies and mental, emotional, and energetic influences on your health. They explain a lot about why energy medicine—and Jungian and shamanic techniques—seem to work.

What happens if we skip removing something energetically and simply try to bring in healing? Once, during a shamanic ceremony I participated in, my intent was to bring in the universal light, the creative light energy from the Quiet. During the ceremony, I realized it was a battle to clear myself energetically

We speak of being happy right down to our toes or having a warm feeling in our heart. Such sayings reflect our awareness that emotions are not simply experienced biochemically in the brain. In fact, emotional stress can lead to excess stomach acid being released, causing a sensation of nausea experienced in the head and in the belly. We instinctively acknowledge this when we say idiomatic expressions such as “I can’t stomach this confrontation.” Emotional stressors, such as thoughts that generate feelings of fear and CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[FROM THE HEART]

WHERE TO FIND THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE by Alan Cohen

When I asked my friend Brenda, “How’s your love life?” she sighed and answered, “Working on it, like everyone.” Were we really born to be constantly working on our love life, or were we born to be enjoying it? After many years of coaching and leading seminars, I have discovered two areas that most people ask about most frequently: prosperity and relationships. Most people are looking for their love mate, or if they have one, are seeking a better connection. Since February is the month of Valentine’s Day, let’s dive in to illuminate what makes relationships work. The simplest answer comes from a woman named Georgia 14

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2020

who told an astounding story in a seminar in Greece. Georgia reported that she had been married to an emotionally abusive man. When she requested a divorce, her husband refused. In Greece it is harder to get a divorce than in America, so Georgia realized she had to stay with him, for a while at least. In the meantime, Georgia decided to give herself the love she was missing from her husband. She wrote herself a passionate, poetic love letter as if from a man who worshipped her. “Georgia, my love, you are the light of my life. I am entranced by your ravishing beauty, deep wisdom and generous heart. You are sexy beyond words. I have never felt so deeply for anyone. I want to hold you in my arms and love you like no one

ever has. I cannot wait to see you again. Until then, my heart is with you. I love you forever.”

look not outside for love, but within. Any sincere journey within will lead you to all the love you have sought without.

Receiving such an inspired missive, even from an imaginary lover, felt so good that Georgia decided to write herself another love letter the next day. And the next, and the next, until she was writing and receiving an impassioned message daily. Gradually she felt lighter, freer and more filled with the love she had been missing.

This does not mean you cannot have a great partner with whom you share deep love, and who enhances your life. This will happen only when you come from wholeness, rather than seeking a person to make you whole. When two whole people get together and celebrate and support each other, rather than trying to get from each other, your relationship becomes completely satisfying and miracles of love manifest.

When you know you are loveable, you will find someone who loves you. To try to get someone to love you when you don’t love yourself defies the law of attraction, which clearly states that as you think and feel, so you attract. Great relationships are not achieved from the outside in. They proceed from the inside out.

Then her husband found one of the letters. Since it was unsigned, he believed it had been written by a secret lover. He came to Georgia, waving the letter in his hand. “I can’t compete with this,” he blurted out. “You can have your divorce!” Georgia literally loved herself out of a bad marriage. When her husband had been unkind to her, she was agreeing with her diminished self-worth. Thus, the empty marriage kept the two stuck together like pieces of Velcro with matching hooks. When Georgia upleveled her vibration and established her mind and heart in self-love, there was no more match. Her husband had to either rise to meet her or leave. Just as you can love yourself out of a bad relationship, you can love yourself into one. The way to do this seems antithetical to the way nearly every romantic book and movie has taught you to find a great partner. You have been taught that when you find someone who loves you, you will know that you are loveable. Yet it works just the opposite way: When you know you are loveable, you will find someone who loves you. To try to get someone to love you when you don’t love yourself defies the law of attraction, which clearly states that as you think and feel, so you attract. Great relationships are not achieved from the outside in. They proceed from the inside out. When coaching clients complain to me that their partner is not meeting their needs, I ask them a question that seems completely insane in light of how we have been trained to have a happy partnership: “Why do you allow your partner’s behavior to be a factor in your happiness?” This question seems absurd because we have been taught that the role of a partner is to make us happy. But if you have ever given the power of your happiness to your partner, you know that this approach always backfires. If you wish to have a good relationship, you must

A Course in Miracles tells us that relationships offer the quickest route to healing. Not by finding someone who will satisfy your needs but by joining with someone with whom you can practice knowing that all your needs have already been met. Empty people create empty relationships. Whole people create whole relationships. The recognition of your deep, innate, perfect loveableness is the key to finding someone who matches the light you are, and together, you both shine brighter. When you are your own Valentine, your perfect Valentine will show up beside you. Alan Cohen is the author of many inspirational books including A Course in Miracles Made Easy. CONSCIOUS, SUBCONSCIOUS AND EGO by Stephanie Jarmuth When I ask you what the voices in your head say, you either know exactly what I am speaking of or have associated ‘hearing voices’ with some sort of imbalance in the psyche; neither being wrong, I want to shed light on the fact that your own voice, the voice of your thoughts, is coming from three different parts of the self. You have probably heard the names of these three parts within you before; they are Conscious, Subconscious and Ego. You likely have a misinterpretation or even negative association with one or more of those words. Today, I am here to clear up those misconceptions and provide the information necessary for you to befriend these parts of yourself...to make your mind less of a battlefield and more of a safe haven. Let’s start with that part of your mind referred to as the ‘Conscious.’ The Conscious is the voice of awareness, reasoning and intellect. It attempts to better us and seeks growth in a healthy, wellpaced and safe manner. When a smoker has the thought, “I should stop smoking, these things are harmful to me,” the smoker has just had a conscious thought or realization. When someone who desires to lose weight makes the initial 16

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2020

decision to do so, that was a conscious decision. Additionally, each time following that decision that this person declines a soda or a cookie, those too are conscious decisions. They are made from an intelligent perspective on the situation and perhaps the decision or realization was made because of an internal discussion/ debate with the Subconscious. Awareness is also an aspect of the Conscious. Perhaps you have heard someone say, “I am conscious of ____,” meaning they are aware of whatever it is they filled in that blank with. This is because that _____ is now at the forefront of their mind, it has their attention and awareness. “I am conscious of my arm,” “I am conscious of the fact I have a doctor’s appointment today.” In these instances, you can substitute ‘conscious’ for ‘aware’ or ‘aware of.’ So then, when not aware, when not conscious, what part of the mind takes over? When not focused on and conscious of the fact you have a doctor’s appointment later that day where does that information go? This ability to store information until needed later is one of the many tasks of the Subconscious. The Subconscious is the host of our memo-

ries, emotions, habits, belief systems, body functioning, past conditionings and values. That’s a lot, right? Knowing how much the Subconscious does I am sure it will be no surprise to you to find out that we are operating from our Subconscious 90 to 95% of the time. Think about it this way, what you do automatically is the doing of the Subconscious. Driving is an easy example. When you first learn to drive, you need to do so consciously by using your intellect and reasoning ability to know which pedal to push, how or when to shift gears, to put on your turn signal before merging or turning, etc. But, after driving continuously and consistently, it becomes a habit. It is such a strong habit now that I bet you can drive so well on autopilot that you can reach your destination and not even remember parts of the drive. This is because your magnificent mind has stored this action as a habit, and where do habits ‘live?’ In the Subconscious. Perhaps each time you put on your shoes you tie them the same way, when you walk into your house you automatically put your keys and jacket in a certain place, you always pour your

coffee in before the creamer, or cereal before the milk...all these behaviors are stored as habits, so that your brain is free to use all of its limited decision-making on bigger tasks throughout the day. Another amazing task of the Subconscious is that it hosts beliefs. One may have a belief that they are capable or confident, while another may have a belief that they are always going to fail. Beliefs more often than not determine our behavior; a child who believes that strangers are dangerous will not approach one, an adult that believes they will always fail or that they are undeserving may never strive for their dreams. These habits and beliefs will certainly affect our outlook on life, our quality of life and the amount of joy we experience. One may have the conscious realization and then make a conscious decision that they are going to stop smoking but then after a meal or when they get in the car, find themselves automatically reaching for a cigarette. The subconscious has these automatic actions and thoughts because it thinks it is helping us, which often it is! All of our good habits, good beliefs, and healthy behaviors, are habits stored the same way and for the same reason that the perceived bad habit was. The thing is that the Subconscious does not know right from wrong or good from bad, and this is why negative habits and beliefs also get stored. If you have ever tried to cut back on sweets, this conversation between the Subconscious (SC) and Conscious (C) may be familiar: While at the grocery store and you see your favorite cookies: SC: “Look! Our favorite cookies! The ones we eat a few of each night, get those.” C: “No, no, remember, we are only allowing ourselves sweets on weekends and today is Tuesday. If we get them now, I’m sure we will eat some beforehand.” SC: “We won’t! I swear, we can hold off until then! Get the cookies.” Either you end up giving in to the habit, or you stick to your conscious decision and keep walking past those cookies. This conversation is had whenever there

is a difference in what the Conscious part of the self wants and what the Subconscious is used to. Smokers may have this sort of conversation each time a craving hits post-quitting; overeaters may have this sort of internal debate anytime they finish their food and are drawn towards seconds, and those who believe they are incapable may have this sort of discussion any time they attempt to do something new. The Subconscious will always speak to attempt to convince you to revert to the habit or belief that you no longer want because that is what is familiar, that is what is known and ‘safe’, and it thinks it is helping you by encouraging what once brought you pleasure or joy. This is why change seems hard, why New Year’s resolutions are often short-lived, and why people become disheartened when they cannot stick to their conscious decision. But, never fear, what has been habituated can be replaced. Each time you walk past those cookies, skip the smoke, or remind yourself that you are fully capable—each time you become conscious of the behavior you want instead and skip the old behavior—you are teaching your Subconscious a new behavior. Each time you repeat that new behavior, it becomes stronger until the new behavior is the stronger habit! Repetition is how you learned the old habit, and that is how you can implement the new one. Remember to take note of when those sort of conversations strike, remind yourself of your conscious decision, become conscious that you are having that internal debate only because your Subconscious is trying to please you and then say to yourself, “Thank you for encouraging the action or thought that I am used to, that once brought me joy, but I want to be like this now instead _____,” and fill in that blank with your new conscious decision. Onward now to Ego. The Ego has a bad rap, often when one hears the word ‘ego’ their mind brings forth the picture of a self-centered, entitled or conceited individual. Though it is true, yes, that that person has an Ego and that that person’s Ego is feeding them many thoughts of personal praise and superiority, to fill the mind with superiority is not the main function of the Ego, it is just the main function of their Ego.

The Ego is the part of us that helps us express our identity, helps us express who we are inside to the outside world. Getting dressed is a great example of Ego expression–self-expression– you choose clothes that are of your personal style, clothes that help you present yourself to the world. It is the Ego that gets you dressed in the morning saying things like “I will look good in this combination of clothes,” “I will feel most comfortable today in these soft clothes,” “I will look professional in this suit.” The Ego not only encourages thoughts of concern for physical appearance (our physical expression of who we are inside), but it also encourages beliefs that the Subconscious already has. If one has a belief that they are highly capable, that they could do anything, their Ego will encourage that Subconscious belief by saying, “I can do that,” “I will put forth my best effort as I always do,” “I will succeed.” Notice too that these are all ‘I’ statements, the Ego is the expression of our Identity. So, it will exaggerate what you already believe to be true of yourself. It is not the Ego to blame for the conceited and self-centered individual’s persona, their Ego is just expressing what they believe to be true. So if they believe that they are better than or somehow ‘above’ others, their Ego will express this. But the opposite is also true...if one believes they are incapable of success, the Ego will say things like, “I’ll never get the hang of this,” “I will always be a let-down,” “I suck.” I am sure that you can see now how the conversations within our minds are so important, and how our lives and quality of life is a consequence of the quality of self-talk. My goal of this article was to empower you—not make you feel like a victim to these parts. Ultimately, you are a Conscious being, and because you are Conscious, you can decide who to be, how to be, what to do, as well as what not to do. You need to exercise your consciousness in the same way a bodybuilder builds his or her muscles, through continuous use. LOSE WEIGHT AND GAIN ENERGY Without Resolutions or Diets by Betsy Bruns I stopped making New Year’s resolutions a while ago. Like weight-loss diets, which have a start date, an end date, and the feeling of holding your breath until the torture is over. New Year’s resolutions are rarely successful. Neither are most diets. According to some estimates, diets fail 95% of the time. Not only is long-term weight loss rarely achieved, but diets can also result in weight gain over the long run. Restrictive eating can lead to loss of lean muscle mass, the slowing of metabolism, as well as eventual disordered eating patterns that may trigger gorging and bingeing down the road. 18

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2020

Back in my younger days when I carried 40 extra pounds and peanut M&M’s were my oxygen, I went on a lot of diets. They were often preceded by a feast of Big Macs, greasy pizza and lots of chocolate. I rarely got through the first week before bailing. My bon voyage feast most likely totaled more calories than the calories I lost in the days that I white-knuckled through the diet. I was probably in the hole each time I attempted to lose weight.

compassion for abused farm animals and what they endure in our factory farming system that I lost my appetite for meat and never looked back.

On Jan. 1, 2012, I made a dietary change quite spontaneously. I decided to stop eating meat after watching a film that expanded my consciousness about the ethics of eating animals. I felt so much

What is the difference between a vegan and a whole food plant-based diet? A vegan diet means you eat no animal foods or animal by-products. Like a vegan diet, a whole-food, plant-based

That decision has taken me on the most amazing odyssey. In the years following, the expansion of my consciousness led me from a vegetarian way of eating to a vegan diet, and eventually, to a wholefood, plant-based lifestyle.

diet omits all meats, fish, dairy and eggs as well as most refined and processed foods, like refined white flours and overly refined grains, sugars and oils. A whole food plant-based diet is a healthier version of a vegan diet. If you are not eating animal foods or heavily refined foods, what do you eat then? Lots of things! Vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans move from the side of your plate to the center of your plate. There are hundreds of varieties of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans that can be eaten and prepared in ways that replicate the comfort foods you enjoy today. Plant-based diets can help you lose weight and keep it off because they are packed with fiber, which helps fill you up. If you aim for 40 grams of fiber a day, you will be full, satisfied and will not need to count calories or go hungry. Studies have shown that when eating this way, a 16% increase in after-meal calorieburning speed occurs, referred to as the thermic effect of food. This appears to be because the vegan diet improves insulin sensitivity by 24%. Improved insulin sensitivity allows nutrients to enter the cells of the body more rapidly and converted to heat, rather than to fat. Still not sure? Why not try this way of eating for 21 days and experience what it does for you? Think of it as a test drive, not a diet. The free, evidence-based 21-Day Vegan Kickstart has everything you need to get started on a plant-based diet: meal plans, recipes, grocery lists, daily videos, nutrition tips, cooking demonstrations, and more. VEGGIES IN A BLANKET Makes 8 servings Whenever I demo this recipe in a “PCRM: Food for Life” class it’s a hit. It’s a simple, yet tasty snack, appetizer or light meal. This recipe is part of the PCRM cancer series classes. Ingredients

1 cup store-bought hummus or bean dip (or homemade using recipes in the guide)

8 whole wheat tortillas

BAKED OVEN FRIES

4 carrots, grated

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Cut four medium Yukon gold potatoes into fries, about ½ inch thick. Place fries in a saucepan, cover with water and bring to a boil. Boil for five minutes. Drain well and place in a bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste, toss until fully coated. Lay evenly on a cookie sheet or baking pan lined with parchment paper. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Serve with ketchup or your favorite oil-free sauce.

8 lettuce leaves, 1 cup baby spinach, or 1 5-ounce container sprouts Thin sticks of cucumber, red bell pepper or shredded red cabbage to add before rolling (optional) Directions

Shred carrots. Spread hummus or bean spread thinly on tortillas, and then add carrots and lettuce, spinach, or other veggies. Roll up each tortilla, secure with five evenly placed toothpicks, and slice into five individual rolls per tortilla and serve as an appetizer. Or, to serve as a meal, simply cut each tortilla in half.

POWER PLATE MEAL: VEGGIE SAUTÉ WITH BAKED OVEN FRIES Keeping things simple is helpful when trying a new way of eating. Recipes that are fussy and that require lots of unfamiliar ingredients and spices can be overwhelming. Some of my favorite meals are whipped up by whatever I have in my refrigerator. VEGGIE SAUTÉ Chop and over medium heat, dry sauté whatever veggies you have on hand. Onion, mushroom and greens are my favorite combination. Dry sauté means using no oil. You will be surprised to learn that oil is not needed to sauté vegetables. If they start to stick, just add water, one tablespoon at a time. You can also add a splash of vegetable broth or tamari to add moisture and flavor. Season according to your taste, using the spices you have on hand. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER February 2020 by Bernadette Evans

Overview February brings a few different energies to the table. The Sun moves from Aquarius into Pisces as does Mercury. Mercury also goes Retrograde on Feb. 16, and it’s possible there will be some delays or that texts or emails may get lost in cyberspace. Don’t panic and don’t jump to conclusions. Try and keep a cool head to avoid any disagreements. Saturn and Pluto are beginning to separate from each other but it’s slow going. There may still be some unexpected shakeups, but it’s time for a certain situation to change. Mars enters the sign of Capricorn the same day that Mercury turns retrograde which gives us four planets in Capricorn. There could be authority figures who are pushing their agenda. It could also be a call to you to be an authority in your own life. With Uranus in Taurus, another Earth sign, it could be that projects or other wants are manifesting, but it’s slow going. Patience is required to see it through to the finish line. Venus moves into Aries, which could cause some impulsiveness in relationships; the other planets are either in Water or Earth which feel slower. So, take a breath and say it with me, “Everything happens exactly when it’s supposed to happen.” So be patient and know that all is well. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete its orbit through the 12 signs, staying approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is Void of Course (VoC), it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets before it leaves the sign it’s in. At these times, it can be difficult to get focused and accomplish a task. You may want to relax, meditate or do something where your focus is turned inward. Don’t try and get a new project off the ground when the Moon is Void. If you want to find out more about the Void of Course Moon, check out moontracks.com. The times below are listed in Central Standard Time.

Saturday, February 1 When the Moon squares the Sun, you could be thinking of doing something physical or excited about an upcoming trip! There’s a feeling of adventure and excitement in the air. You’re on the lookout for new possibilities to appear on the horizon. There could be some tension in a relationship with the Moon-Sun Square. One of you may be quite happy with the status quo, while the other wants something to change. It may feel like a tug of war. Moon’s in Taurus.

Sunday, February 2 You may feel like running away from your feelings, as they could be overpowering you when the Moon trines Pluto. Your sensitivity is heightened and you’re dealing with your emotions as well as the emotions of others. It’s up to you if you want to do some exploring and digging around in your psyche. If you care to do the work, there is gold buried there.

Monday, February 3 Mercury enters the sign of Pisces at 5:37 a.m. When Mercury is in the sign of Pisces you may feel more in touch with your intuition. Your sensitivity and empathy 22

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2020

are enhanced, as well as your creativity and imagination. The Venus-Saturn sextile gives the potential of bringing some order to your creative projects. Once the work is done, you can go out and celebrate your accomplishments! Invite friends over, as it’s always more fun sharing your successes with those you love. Moon VoC at 5:28 a.m. until 5:29 a.m. when it enters the sign of Gemini.

Tuesday, February 4 The Moon-Neptune square can sharpen your intuition. A creative interest, such as writing, flows when you tap into your imagination. It may feel like you’re swimming in a sea of emotions which can be a little overwhelming. Remember to come up for air once in a while to collect your thoughts. This transit could bring up feelings of confusion. Are you living in the real world, or are you just seeing what you want to see? Only you can answer that.

Wednesday, February 5 In the morning, the Moon is Void in Gemini. This is a great time to finish up any job proposals or writing assignments. It’s also a great time to catch your breath and have a rest away from everyone and everything, if possible. Then in the afternoon when the Moon moves into Cancer, you might want to do something that feels nurturing. Maybe there’s someone in your life you want to pamper, or you could be the one in need of pampering. Listen to your intuition and do what soothes your soul. Moon VoC at 8:20 a.m. until 1:03 p.m. when it enters the sign of Cancer.

Thursday, February 6 You may feel pulled to help those you love in any way you can when the Moon opposes Jupiter. Your goodwill and generosity know no bounds, but be aware of overextending yourself. There’s also the potential for combining your talents with another to form a partnership that is quite unique.

Friday, February 7 Venus enters the sign of Aries at 2:02 p.m. When Venus is in Aries, you could be bolder in your relationships. You value taking charge and going after what you want. When the Moon is Void in Cancer, people may search you out looking for someone to nurture them, whatever that may be. Then in the early evening when

the Moon enters Leo, take time for yourself. What would bring you joy? Do that! Moon VoC at 9:43 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. when it enters the sign of Leo.

Saturday, February 8 There are times when you may be asked to go on a mission to discover what needs healing in your relationships. The VenusChiron conjunction extends its hand to you, grab it, and uncover where the pain in your relationships first began. Be bold and brave. Sit with it, feel it, heal it, and keep moving forward.

Sunday, February 9 There is a Full Moon in Leo at 1:33 a.m. What is your heart’s desire? What is it you really need to do for yourself? Are you paying attention to the call or afraid of what would happen if you put in a real effort? Voilà, you manifested it! You may need to find the balance between doing what you need to keep your heart full while also being in partnership with another. You shine bright with the Full Moon in Leo, just remember you might have to share the spotlight. Moon is VoC at 10:08 a.m. until 5:39 p.m. when it enters the sign of Virgo.

Monday, February 10 Your feelings could dictate how you speak when interacting with others today when the Moon opposes Mercury. So, if you’re feeling on edge, be careful of snapping at someone. You may be better going off by yourself for a while to sit with your feelings. Getting your thoughts down on paper could be helpful.

Thursday, February 13 You feel calm and balanced with the MoonSun trine. There’s an air of being sure of yourself and letting life unfold as it should. What happens to us once we die? This question can be debated endlessly. Walter Semkiw, however, believes in reincarnation. How to Suffer … In 10 Easy Steps: Discover, Embrace and Own the Mechanics of Misery, by William Arntz (Watkins Publishing, $18.95, Paperback)

This is a different type of self-help book. Instead of simply trying to focus on the good—as many self-help book authors do— William Arntz contends that it is important to allow for the experience of suffering to grow stronger. He shares tips on how to suffer so that readers can fully embrace the experience and gain from it instead of constantly running from it. Kayla Hancock is grateful to be a part of this community.
