OnGender,Marriage,andSexuality
ChristAcademya rmsthatGodreservesamarriageunionforonemanandonewoman,andhe reservessexualintimacyexclusivelywithinthatmarriage.Werecognizethatthisa rmationis out-of-synchwiththemajorityopinionin21stcenturyAmerica However,wetakeourcuesnotfrom thepopulacebutfromholyScriptureinconjunctionwithGod’speopleacrosstheages.Our convictiononthismatterfalls rmlywithinthemainstreamofhistoric,Christianorthodoxy.
Contrarytocaricaturesandmisperceptions,ourreasoningisnotbasedonfear,nordowedemeanthe fullhumandignityofpeopleinvolvedinsame-sexrelationships,orinanynon-Biblicalexpressionof sexuality.However,weseethatGod’sdesignformarriageisinfactastillgreatera rmationofhuman dignity:justasGodisbothone-and-many(onebeingandthreepersons),soisman-womanmarriage Inthisway,Godencodessymbolsofhisownmysteriousunity-in-diversitywithinembodiedhumanity (Eph5).Ourbodiesarepartofhischerishedcreation,andGod’sgiftofsexualpleasure ndssanction onlyinthecomplementarityofmaleandfemalebodies.AsJesushimselfsaid,ithasbeensofromthe beginning(Matt19)
Ina rmingtheseBiblicalvalues,wealsoacknowledgethatsomeindividualsfacesigni cant,unwanted hurdlestolivingwithinGod’sdesignforgender,marriageandsexuality.Genderdysphoria,for example,isagenuinea ictionwithacomplexetiology AswepursuefaithfulnesstoGod’sdesign,we alsoextendcompassiontothosewhosu er,whileconcurrentlyseekingtoshepherdthosewithinour

WebelievethatallhumanlifeissacredandcreatedbyGodinhisimage.Wethereforehaveadivine mandatetodefend,protect,andvalueallhumanlife,ateverystageofdevelopmentordegradation. Sincewearehischerishedcreatures,taskedwithimitatinghisowncharacter,wemustdelightequally intheunbornandtheelderly,thegeniusandthepersonwithcognitivedisability,theathleteandthe physicallychallenged–andeveryotherpermutationofhumanlife.AllareequallyvaluableinGod’s eyes.

However,Scripturesaysmorethanthis.InnarratingGod’sredemptivedrama,italsoinstructsGod’s peopleinthefullnessofGod’swisdom,andinthisexpansiveinstructionnotalldetailsareequally clear TheBibleistrueinallthatitsays,but,alongwithwiseChristiansacrossthecenturies,indeed witheventheapostlesandprophetsandJesushimself,weacknowledgethatidentifyingwhatScripture saysrequiresskillfulattentiontothepragmaticsofhumanlanguage.ScriptureisGod’sself-revelation writteninthecustomsofordinaryhumanity;itiseternaltruthconveyedthroughourconventions,or rather,throughtheconventionsofourforebearsinancientcultures

Sinceweaimtoformanexpansivehumanitywithinourstudents,weloadoureducationwithbroad exposuretothebeautyofvisual,musical,andperformativeart.BeautyisitselfanencounterwithGod; healoneisbeautyitself.ThefourthcenturytheologianGregoryofNazianzenlikenedGodtothe “beautyandgreatnessoftheheavens,”onlywithin nitelymoresplendor.
Thearts,then,areagiftfromGod.Theypenetratebeneaththefabricofourcognitiontoprovideus withalived-experienceofGod’sbeing,butnotinawaythatreplacesGod.SinceonlyGodhimself fullysatis esthehumanheart,theartscanonlystiranappetiteforGod;theygiveatasteofhisbeauty, movingus,shapingustodiscoverthefullnessoflifeinhimthroughJesusChrist Aneducation withoutbeautyisthusincomplete.

Werecognizethatmaintainingawell-disciplinedclassroomiskeytolearning Webelievethat “Knowledgewithoutvirtueisdangerous.”Therefore,encouragingvirtuousbehaviorthatstemsfrom theheartisasimportantasencouragingexcellenceinmathandgrammar.Astudent’sbehavior, attitude,andphysicaldispositionshouldcontributepositivelytotheclassroomenvironmentand ChristAcademy’svalueofshapinggodlycharacter Ourruleissimpleformaintainingthisdisciplined atmosphere:“Loveyourneighborasyourself.”
