PROVIDENCE SCHOOL OF TIFTON

Uniform Overview

Since its inception, Providence School of Tifton has been committed to uniform clothing for its students. This policy has four fundamental benefits.
First, uniforms prevent the application of subjective standards of dress in the classroom. Parents, students, and teachers know that the uniform meets the school’s standards of modesty. Uniforms allow our board, students, parents and staff to focus on the academic and spiritual needs of the student body. Additionally, being overly concerned with clothing and outward appearances is contrary to God’s will for us as revealed in scripture (1 Sam. 16:7; Matt. 6:19-21; James 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17).
Second, uniforms are a positive influence in the school. Providence places particular value on a disciplined learning environment. A child learns that when he is wearing a Providence uniform, he will be engaging in studious activity. Everything in our lives, including our clothing, should reflect the order of the Godhead and the order He has created in the world (1 Corinthians 14:40). Uniforms are a positive discipline in the school, and Providence emphasizes the value of a disciplined learning environment. Just as parents must wear appropriate work attire, wearing a school uniform is a signal to the child that it is a time for hard work and studious activity. Our children are serving as witnesses and ambassadors both for the Lord Jesus Christ and the school. Student appearance is a reflection of both.
Third, uniforms encourage a community spirit, where individuality is sacrificed for the good of the group. This removes the potential distraction of what clothing other students are wearing. Pressures felt by children to compete in areas of dress are destructive to the unity of the school and the body of Christ. It encourages students to not grow a love for the fleeting styles and ideals of our present time, but to be grounded in the everlasting word of God as their foundation for truth, goodness, and beauty.
Finally, uniforms usually decrease the cost of clothing. Our uniforms are rugged and high-quality. They can take wear and tear. Parents can typically purchase two to three sets of uniforms to last throughout the school year. These can often be handed down to other children. Providence strives to have a uniform consignment opportunity once a year where parents can sell and/or purchase used items.
