Ingenuity in Action Anna L. Stamm Director of Communications and Marketing Component Manufacturing Advertiser.
For most of us, the majority of our time we do things in the way we’ve done them before, for the reasons we’ve had before, and expecting the typical results. For many projects, that’s exactly how to operate! When we follow our habits and procedures, we’re able to capture efficiencies. We increase our speed of completing routine tasks, improve our ability to manage many more tasks simultaneously, and maintain our quality of output. But, every now and then, we’re reminded to reexamine the ordinary and see what else we might be able to conceive and execute.
Re-Imagine a Situation When I initially saw photos from Deco Truss of exposed trusses on a budget, featured on our cover and in this month’s Design of the Day, my first thought was – great project! Then, learning more about the details, my next thought was – great story! The designers of the Carnival Cruise Straw Market in Turks and Caicos envisioned heavy timber trusses. Mario Espiñeira, Jr. of Deco Truss in Miami, Florida readily agreed that heavy timber trusses would look good. But, he added, “Nobody goes to the Straw Market to look at the structure.” Instead of quoting only heavy timber trusses, with the steep price tag to match, Deco Truss also quoted “regular” trusses with a few cosmetic upgrades, including painting the truss plates black. By re-imagining what was possible, the result was a job/sale completed by Deco Truss, a very satisfied customer, and an attractive and sound structure that will be enjoyed by tourists for many years to come.

Includes 32 foot small parts and 28 foot scrap conveyors. Windows XP operating system. Available in December of 2016. Limited warrantee available with OEM installation supervision (at additional charge). $119,990 NOW $109,990 FOB TN Wood Truss Systems 765-751-9990 www.woodtrusssystems.com
Visualize a New Perspective While talking about ingenuity, I also have to mention the Acer ad in this month’s issue which demonstrates the strength of their equipment by suspending a car from it. Way to drive home a point! It reminds me of the classic ads from the early days of trusses, when they were loaded with all kinds of weight, including cars or trucks, to demonstrate their strength. These images do much to reinforce the words that accompany them. Strong visual imagery is eye-catching and educational.
Thinking is Not Wasting Time So, the next time you feel like you’re in too much of a routine, go ahead and let your mind wander a bit. Get a little creative. Try something new. Ask someone else for their opinion and their input. Look at things from a different perspective. Whenever you try something new, it may not work out as you’d have expected, but it’s still worth exercising those brain cells. Your next idea may be your most ingenious thought yet!

WWW.SQUARE1DESIGN.COM SQUARE 1 DESIGN & MANUFACTURE INC.
GROWING INTEREST – WALL PANELS WWW.SQUARE1DESIGN.COM
Each and every machine, employee, and environment has unique limitations. It’s knowing how to exploit the strengths of each that will contribute to the success of the company and the success of each product line. We recognize the strengths of unconventional wall framing for the North American market. It is unlikely any conventional system can out produce a Spida style Wall Panel Extruder or similar system. Production will certainly vary based on the amount of automation implemented; but stud for stud, conventional framers are considerably slower. Many say the Extruder is great for interior walls because the Spida Extruder lacks squaring Sean Hubbard and sheathing stations. Although this is true, third party sheathing stations are available. The problem is, they can’t keep up with the production. With that being the case, the problem is not that of the Spida Extruder, but rather that of the sheathing and squaring stations. In the following cases, the Extruders will support multiple sheathing stations. Last week, we visited with three corporations. All three have, could, and will benefit from additional volume through their wall panel operations. That is exactly why they contacted Square 1 Design & Manufacture Inc. As with many operations, each believe they suffer from inadequate space. Physical constraints are only a small part of the entire process. As equipment manufacturers, we are often required to provide production capabilities for each piece of machinery. During the equipment design phase, we typically have production goals for each design, based on ideal circumstances. Usually, that number is confirmed by production numbers from component manufacturers. In most cases, defining the ideal circumstances is not available to us, but rather fitting into the current production environment for each customer. Let me give you an example: the Spida Extruder operator can easily nail a stud every 10 seconds. Let’s assume each stud is 16” on centers. Using a 7.5 hour shift: 7.5*60*60=2700 seconds per shift. Therefore, 2700 seconds divided by 10 seconds per stud multiplied by 16” spacing divided by 12”/ft=2700/10*16/12=3600 lineal feet of walls. Now, we can all agree this is so unrealistic and unattainable, it is not even a marketable number. However, that is the true capability of the machine, IF YOU WERE CAPABLE OF SUPPLING MATERIAL TO IT! One of the three organizations has rearranged his facility numerous times over the last two and half years to increase production because flow was less than optimal. In that case, we were provided a material flow diagram and were limited to that area to accomplish the goal. We did just that; however, reality set in and the manufacturer was not capable of utilizing the efficiencies of the equipment. They realized their equipment was capable of much more. The other two corporations have requested plant layouts utilizing both new and existing equipment. Both have given us the leeway to scrap their entire layout and start from scratch. We can then exploit existing equipment or source new, whichever increases production to the desired capacity. One particular company was producing around 400 lineal feet per shift, so far below the threshold of the Spida Extruder that it was incomprehensible to sell them high performance equipment. Even though we are solely equipment manufacturers/distributors, we realize budgets exist. Let’s face it, most brands of equipment produce product, some better than others. In all honesty, we want to sell equipment, but Cullen and I both left and said: “there is no way we can sell them a Spida Extruder without fixing the entire plant.” In an effort to double or triple their production, we need to sheath at multiple stations rather than the bottlenecked single sheathing station currently in use. As equipment manufacturers our goals cannot be to simply sell equipment, but rather to make a plant efficient and more profitable. Square 1 Design & Manufacture Inc. is pleased to spend time with each and every potential customer discussing their needs, goals, and production layouts. If you see Square 1 Design as a resource, regardless if you purchase from us, we have accomplished our goal. German invaders have landed
on our shores intent on leapfrogging our component industry. Their huge investment and their unconventional processes are now being tested on a jobsite not far from their high-tech, 200,000 sq. ft. Baltimore plant. Their name, Blueprint Robotics, invokes a CM’s fantasy; “feed plans into computer and out pops component designs.” But their business plan advances this dream considerably: “download CAD files to Revit – componentize floors, roofs and walls – install plumbing, electrical and mechanicals – and apply exterior and interior finishes,” with all work done in their factory shown above. Their method, closed-wall panelization, is not new to U.S. housing construction. It began gaining momentum over fifty years ago, as builders struggled to meet growing post-WWII housing demands. I first encountered it at the Industrialized Building Expositions (INBEX) in 1971 and 1972. There I was awed by the glitzy marketing and glamorous displays of panelized and modular housing; particularly by the stock market sensation, Stirling Homex. Though our tiny booth was dwarfed by their display, I left the Show exuberant about the highly innovative housing industry. Factory-built housing hype ramped up in concert with housing starts, which increased from 1.4 to 2.4 Million units in just two years. The euphoria of the peak housing year of 1972 was exemplified by the 330,000 sq. ft. closed wall factory begun by Wausau Homes in Wisconsin. Late that year, the INBEX Show expanded dramatically, moving from the humble Louisville Fair Grounds to the mammoth McCormick Place in Chicago. Industry experts proclaimed that “…factories must eventually supply most of our housing needs,” and established builders worried that they would be displaced by huge manufacturers. However, this revolution had to clear many hurdles. Building inspections and codes had to be overhauled. Tenacious trade unions would have to be placated. And manufacturers had to address consumer doubts about prefabricated, look-alike housing. Then, in 1975, the bottom fell out – housing dropped in half, Stirling Homex was bankrupt, and investors shunned what had become a highly cyclical industry. More than history, the TURBO Drive is German engineered to allow for maximum performance in a given application. With this base, precision performance is improved with software optimization rather than hardware changes. This is apparent when the TURBO Drive was optimized for USA component cutting, the same world model saw runs significantly faster, simply by optimizing movements and stroke. For a demonstration of how software upgrades accomplish this, see the “before & after” video at: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU. It illustrates that software can increase throughput rather than redesigning elements of the equipment, your TURBO Drive does not become yesterday’s news because of a model number change.
FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW SOFTWARE UPGRADES ACCOMPLISH THIS, SEE THE “BEFORE & AFTER” VIDEO AT: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU
So how much would you pay for software that increases your cutting productivity and keeps your saw current with the latest technology? How about zero? With the Hundegger TURBO Drive, free software updates for life are included with the saw. As software is optimized and performance is enhanced, you’ll never have to worry about what model you bought. Todd Drummond Consulting, LLC.
Off–site Designing and Sales: The Three Biggest Obstacles
Website: www.todd-drummond.com Phone (USA): 603-763-8857 E–mail: todd@todd-drummond.com Copyright © 2017
What once was frowned upon has now become very common. Off–site designing and off–site sales individuals or teams can be a very good way to expand your company’s capabilities. The biggest driver of its emerging acceptability is the fact that the pool of talent is larger when looking nationwide. However, the actual application of the practice may expose some troubling obstacles within your company. Here are the three areas your company should look to improve to prevent costly mistakes and improve the design and the sales capacity. The lack of formal written standards for the groups can be a huge time productivity killer. What a company believes to be its design and sales standards normally have been discussed through verbal communication, but most companies do not have true standards. Formal written standards can be used for bringing new designers and salespeople up to speed on your company’s practices much quicker and for defining uniform design and order processing practices. The simple act of creating written standards within a design group can create a better means by which to judge the group’s successes. Also, without formal written standards, communication is hindered because the group has often never taken the time to describe the standards in a clear and concise manner. Of course, all salespeople believe they are somehow exempt from formal standards and try to circumvent the what, how and who for processing their projects. Save your people a lot of arguing and headaches by creating formal, written design and sales standards. Managing the design group is often performed by the design manager handing out the projects and waiting for the group to return them as they are completed. There is little actual monitoring of task completion, and the scheduling is often lax, to put it mildly. Ponder this simple question when it comes to properly managing the design group: why is it that every company believes it is an absolute necessity to schedule every order being processed in the manufacturing to manage the limited resources, yet the limited resources of the design group are somehow totally different? Why is it okay to state to the sales team that their project will be processed “sometime next week,” yet any order scheduled for delivery through the manufacturing process which uses far more company resources can be scheduled to an exact date? When it comes to off–site designing, both the in–house and off–site design personnel should be provided with an expected schedule with allowances for the unknowns for all the work being processed to keep your sales team better informed. A good thing for the manufacturing management practices is also good for the design groups’ management practices (see the previous article, “Critical Part Missing from Six Sigma and Lean Practices for Most Companies,” at http://www.icontact-archive.com/MBChPo-Y13iKY9TzI6OLE0LMoSMUJ7IE?w=3). The most overlooked and little-understood aspect of the off–site designer or sales team members is communication. Communication is often a hodgepodge of e-mails, phone calls, Dropbox file sharing and the plate vendor management software used for scheduling at most of the component companies. This type of communication system is a system which forces people to synchronize scattered bits of information constantly, so they are often wasting valuable time making sure something is not forgotten or overlooked. Most believe they are wasting a minimum of an hour every day just trying to find answers for multiple projects being processed. Just stop and think about how many times you have to make or receive a phone call for project status updates. This type of communication system exposes and exacerbates your poor communication processes when you have off–site personnel needing critical information immediately. Too often the phrases “I was not told” or “it was never sent to me” are being used by design or sales teams because of their communication system. When you consider the cost of expanding either the design or sales team members, which do you think is more expensive? A better form of a communication system where everything is consolidated into a shared web-based system or the cost of a single new employee? (The number one component manufacturing solution: http://todddrummond.com/appwright/) The three main aspects of making off-site personnel work efficiently within your company that should be properly addressed are formal written standards, scheduling with allowances for unknown issues and the actual communication processes. If you want to manage and create more capacity for the design and sales teams with fewer mistakes, then improve these critical areas. Your company will improve the bottom line just as effectively as if you were improving the manufacturing processes. PHONE: 800-289-5627

Upsizing Plates and Plate Placement Method Failures Using a 6 x 6 plate instead of a 3 x 6 plate can make the Plate Placement Method fail the polygon rule. So what is happening? And how can this be resolved?
What’s Happening: In the image, the yellow area represents the connector optimal placement for the designed size of a 3 x 6 connector. The yellow and green area represents the builders’ substitution of a 6 x 6 plate. When completing a critical plate analysis because of this substitution, the plate center is no longer within the polygon area shaded in purple as indicated by the orange dot. Per the plate placement method, this plate would fail. Because the plate size is increased, the center of the plate also shifts.
How It’s Resolved: Once it’s determined that the center fails the polygon requirement, what else can the inspector do to determine if the plate fails or is acceptable? The most logical next step would be to use the tooth count method. The tooth count method does not require the plate center in a specific area. In this case, because the plate is oversized, there are plenty of teeth per member. Another option to avoid counting teeth is that the truss can be rerun with the new size. The plate placement method would generate a new polygon, as illustrated in the image with the light blue. With this redesigned plate, selection of the polygon area will change, indicating the location of the plate can be shifted.
The Bottom Line: The rule is: If the Plate Placement Method fails, then count teeth. •
If the tooth count passes, the plate passes.
•
If the tooth count fails, the plate placement method will fail.
And what if you’re unwilling to count teeth? If the plate used is different than the size indicated on the output paperwork, then regeneration of the paperwork will be necessary to confirm that the upsized plate is acceptable.

things could be adding value to the process in assembly or another area. Waste of transportation can involve raw components, subassemblies, empty boxes or just about anything that is required for production. It will not only be found in the production area, but also the material delivery areas, throughout the supply chain, and even in offices. Transportation waste is generated whenever you move objects around unnecessarily. (This is related to the waste of motion which is generated whenever you move people, paper, objects, inventory, and finished goods around unnecessarily.)
Ben Hershey, President, Coach, & Mentor 4Ward Consulting Group, LLC
Transportation Waste is More Evident Than You Think Part 2 in our TIMWOODS Series
When we last left off in our series, I introduced you to my friend, TIM WOODS. TIM WOODS is actually an acronym for the eight deadly wastes (Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over-Processing, OverProduction, Defects, and Skills). While the acronym DOWNTIME has also been used in some circles to describe the same processes of waste (Defects, Over-Production, Waiting, Non-utilized Resources/Talent, Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Excess Processing), TIM WOODS keeps the focus on eliminating the time waste, thereby adding value in the process, eliminating process time, and reducing lead time. This month I thought we would start with the waste (muda) of Transportation. Transportation is any excess or unnecessary movement of materials or information within an operation including component plants and LBM dealers. Examples include: chasing parts; walking to the saw room; moving carts in and out of bays; moving plates from one end of the building to the other. We can never fully eliminate transportation, but that person who’s transporting
Obviously, in our component operations when we manufacture components, millwork items, etc., SOME movement of objects is going to be necessary to get it produced. So how do you know when that movement of objects is necessary versus unnecessary? The acid test for whether something is useful movement versus transportation waste is the same question you can use to identify all other kinds of waste in your process. Does the process of movement increase the value of our produced item (or outcome)? If the answer is “No,” you are talking about transportation waste rather than necessary movement of parts and supplies. If we look at Toyota, where the tools and techniques behind Lean Manufacturing have been refined as part of the Toyota Production System (TPS), you will see that many of their suppliers are located close to their plants. Products are not shipped huge distances at great cost with the potential for delay and damage, and it eliminates the interval between where a part arrives to where it is delivered. As part of TPS/Lean/Six Sigma, we are always looking at ways to eliminate muda in the form of transportation. Moving objects or assemblies around unnecessarily obviously consumes time, energy, labor, and money that could be used for something else. However, there are also some less obvious consequences of needlessly moving these same objects or assemblies around. For example: Increasing inventories. When an item gets moved around a lot for little reason, it inevitably piles up in various places, robbing space from more useful activities. Increasing expenses. The waste of transport is a disease that causes the company to hemorrhage money at an alarming rate; you may be paying extra for material handling equipment, staff to operate it, training, safety precautions, extra space for the movement of material, and so forth. Increasing defects. Every time you move something around, you risk damaging it, or losing track of it. Increasing wait. Moving things around unnecessarily means they’ll often not be where they are needed, prompting a lot of waiting around for it to get to where it’s supposed to be. It is the countless times have we seen our associates standing waiting for a forklift at a gantry table, a saw, a trailer, etc. for parts or assemblies that should have been there at that moment.

Let’s look at a couple of main areas of our operations.
How to eliminate or reduce Transportation
Production Area
In the Lean production system, we look at several different processes or solutions to eliminate waste. Consider these options:
Within the production area, waste of transportation will be found when product is not stored close to the point of use. Parts, plates, and raw material/lumber should be staged when needed at the station where it is required to be used. When using these materials, they should be as close to the associate whenever possible. When you do get them closer to the associate, continue looking for improvements by eliminating unnecessary motions (such as parts stored in the proper position on the correct side of the associate).
Material Delivery Areas Moving product further than necessary, storing product in a temporary location only to move it shortly thereafter, and moving with empty delivery carts are all considered a very big waste. As part of the route, the delivery person will travel only with a full cart (cart with a batch); component delivery one way, empty totes the other way (assuming returnable containers are used). The basic concept is as follows: for every full box of components delivered (using a Kanban system), an empty box should be available to be returned to the supplier. With every box of finished goods picked up, an empty box will be required by production.
Supply Chain Optimizing your transportation is another viable option through use of methods such as “milk runs.” This involves picking up product from multiple suppliers on a route. How many of our component/LBM operations coordinate a truck and trailer going out from an operation and then on the way back pick up raw material? This is a fantastic opportunity to eliminate waste of transportation in the supply chain of our operations.
•
Changing the material flow layout of the operation can increase just-in-time delivery of parts to each step in the value stream of your operation and eliminate unneeded steps.
•
Reducing the size of a batch or reviewing how a batch is delivered on a cart eliminates transportation needs. When transporting a batch, are you picking up the plates on the way to the table and delivering together?
•
Streamlining inventory storage in the yard improves transport. Is your forklift driver having to go to numerous locations for the same inventory items; or are they moving in a zig-zag fashion? Change the batch picking and also review storage of material so forklift operators are moving in one direction or in a more orderly flow.
These are just a few of the ways I have helped companies eliminate the Waste of Transportation in their operation and where you can start in yours. As you try to reduce the waste in your everyday processes, think about the ways you might be moving things around unnecessarily. Yes, you will always need to move some things around to get your work done, so the key is to focus on the truly unneeded movement of things. Eliminating or reducing this type of waste within your facility (or within your supply chain) will reduce overall lead time or cycle time. And don’t forget to look at the office processes too. How do you know what movement isn’t needed? Ask the everyday question I mentioned earlier: “Does the process of movement increase the value of our produced item (or outcome)?” Here is what TIM WOODS has to say – “If not, it’s transportation waste, and it’s time to ditch it and find another way of doing things.”

Wood Runner AirPick The next generation Wood Runner® AirPick™ is a giant step forward in automated lumber retrieval systems and is up to 30% faster than the old screw-driven system. The old style lumber retrieval system used screws to pick up lumber, but the AirPick has found a new faster, better way with suction. As a totally automated system, the AirPick eliminates the costs and limitations associated with manually fed saws. The AirPick is incredibly safe, with active monitoring of the work area, the gantry can slow or completely stop itself to avoid people wandering into the work area. This proven technology brings a new level of versatility, efficiency and accuracy to picking and feeding lumber to saws like Omni Miser, Alpine's ALS, Hundegger TURBO, Monet DeRobo, and other linear saws. Forward Thinking. Respecting the Past. Ask most people about the lumber industry and you’ll get a fairly predictable list of descriptions. What you’re not likely to hear are terms like: ● technologically advanced, ● sustainable logging, ● small log harvesting, ● green lumber products, ● commitment to healthy communities, and ● ecologically-minded forest management When people talk about Vaagen Brothers, that’s exactly what you’ll hear. Working in the forests of Washington for more than 50 years, we’ve learned to take the best of traditional logging and lumber milling practices and combine them with advanced production technologies and forward-thinking sustainable forest management practices to create a company that’s as vibrant and growing as the healthy forests and ecosystems necessary to its success. Celebrating Engineers Engineers Week is February 19 – 25 Robert Glowinski is the President & CEO of the American Wood Council (AWC).
February 19 – 25 is National Engineers Week. The week celebrates the impact engineers make on our daily lives and encourages young people to consider engineering as a career. For a trade association, AWC employs a lot of engineers and we see the week as an opportunity to openly share the kind of work our staff undertakes every day to ensure that the buildings in which we live and work are safe. Among their many responsibilities, AWC’s engineers get very involved in the development of building codes, the regulations that control how buildings may permissibly be built across the country. With technological advances and innovations regularly affecting the use of wood products, AWC is committed to ensuring these developments are accurately reflected in the codes and properly implemented by industry professionals. That’s why our engineers work so closely with our building code staff in developing our code change proposals that expand the opportunity for safe wood use. It’s a lot of technical work meant to make sure that building codes evolve with current industry technology.
Girl Day Additionally, and importantly, “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” is Thursday, February 23. If you’ve had a chance to see the movie “Hidden Figures,” you’ve witnessed the extraordinary yet mostly unsung engineering contributions women made to the early space program. The movie shows the significant talent women brought to the profession. Yet, still fewer women than men choose engineering as a profession. AWC has worked hard to change that paradigm and is committed to the cause of getting more women into engineering. A diverse workplace fosters diverse thinking. In the engineering world, we need more of this diversity. To encourage this, check out the Q&A we did last year with two of AWC’s female engineers sharing what they think young girls should know about engineering: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/girl-day-making-difference-engineers-robert-glowinski. As you will read, AWC encourages both men and women to be mentors for girls thinking about the types of professions that might interest them. We want to inspire these future engineers to see they too can change the world, as AWC tries to do every day, by making our built environment safe.

Lumber Briefs By Matt Layman Publisher, Layman’s Lumber Guide
The Save Money Series Part Four: The Real Cost of “Not Discounting” Invoices
Back in the good old days, when I was a rookie lumber broker, central That’s not all. If you do not discount, you cannot buy directly from zone SYP producers offered wholesalers a 5% discount which gave us the mills. You have no option but to buy from office wholesalers who incentive to work their wood outside Mississippi and Alabama. I offer make a minimum of 2.5% per order. Add another $25,000 to the total… that just to be aggravating. per month...$300,000 per year. OUCH! That’s why they call you five Also, back in the day, mills offered a 2% discount to all customers for times a day. Not discounting a $1 million inventory that turns every 30 paying invoices within the agreed upon payment terms. For truckloads and days actually costs you $366,400 per year. carloads, 2% 10 days after arrival (ADA) or after date of invoice (ADI) $1 million buys you a 100 truckload inventory. What’s that? You was normal. “Good” customers could negotiate 2% 30 days. Producers don’t buy that much? No problem. How many truckloads do you buy not only supplied the wood, they served as an intermediate financier. every month? Paying on time was worth more than 24% annual return on a credit line. Of course, everyone at least attempted to discount. Any customer who didn’t discount was considered a high credit risk, and ultimately would hurt you. They paid a premium for lumber and still do.
Multiply the number of monthly truckloads by $3,644 That is how much not discounting costs you.
Nowadays, discounting a carload saves you 1% if the invoice is paid I won’t even scare you with the costs for your lumber out of 5 days after arrival of the car (when it’s spotted, not unloaded). Truckloads warehouse from wholesale distributors. Try four times the office fetch the same 1% if paid within 10 days after date of invoice (the day wholesale number…$14,000 per monthly truckload annually. it ships, not the day it arrives). Not only have the discounts been cut in And you wonder why your margins are thin? That’s how the half and the days to discount been reduced, producers have squeezed an competitor who keeps under bidding you not only stays in business but extra day or two off the reduced discountable days. makes better margins. If this is you, your survival depends on discounting invoices. Do what it takes. While you are working that out, let me help you reduce that waste by 30% starting immediately. It will be the best investment you make during your entire lumber career…$13.44 per week could save you an average of $125 on every truck truckload you buy. Or, just ABSOLUTELY! Instead of reasoning what the savings are, consider keep doing what you are doing. The under-cutting competitor across town won’t mind at all. what not discounting actually costs.
One might wonder, “Why bother to pay the bill on time? Is it even worth it?”
If you have $1 million of inventory that turns every 30 days, use your credit line to discount invoices, and pay an annualized credit line interest rate of 4%, after allowing for discount days, you will need to use the credit line 304 days or 83% of the time. The annual interest cost of $1 million for 365 days is $40,000 (x .83)…$33,200. That’s what you pay in interest using the bank’s money to discount invoices. If you do not discount, and pay in 30 days, you are paying 12% annually for those extra 25 days, or three times as much…that is 300% A veteran lumberman, Matt Layman publishes Layman’s more…$99,600. Lumber Guide, the weekly forecasts and buying advisories
In this example, just the difference in using bank money to discount that help component manufacturers save money on lumber invoices versus not discounting costs you an additional $66,400 every purchases every day. To uncover what’s possible, abandon what’s comfortable! Photo taken at a restaurant in Maine located on the first floor of a historic textile mill building. Such buildings were constructed in the 1860-65 timeframe. The column is about 18”x18” and apparently continues upward into the next floor (or floors). The side mounted connection was stunning to view, and also a good example of an eccentrically loaded column. I noticed (during my dinner) that the column was slightly bowed to the left which would be consistent with an eccentric column loading.

Softwood Framing Lumber Market Forecast & Trading Strategy Matt Layman, Publisher Week #04

ANOTHER DIMENSION
SOFTWOOD FRAMING LUMBER
The Housing Hurdle
Lumber Price Expectations
Housing is getting very interesting. Inventories remain historically low...4 months or less. Prices are up 40% over the past five years. That makes sense...lower supply translates to higher prices...but 8% per year is tough to choke down and sustain. The perplexing issue is declining sales. One would expect the formula that creates lower inventories and rising prices would include increased sales. Ironically, the lower inventory of homes for sale at higher prices appears to be adequate enough to meet current sales demand. Or, we should consider the possibility that despite dwindling supply, home buyers are rejecting price. Low interest rates are certainly helpful, but a $200,000 home in 2012 now selling for $280,000 knocks a lot of willing buyers out of the game. Ride around Anytown, USA and you will see another apartment complex under construction. The desire to own is still low. These low inventory numbers can be attributed to winter. Fewer people move in the winter than in the summer. As we mover forward, inventories will rise. More existing homes will get listed and more new homes will be completed. Bottom line...daylight savings time is two months away. We can expect more new and existing home inventory once spring arrives and even more during the summer. That increase in supply should put a lid on additional price increases.
I read this week that lumber prices rose 8.7% in 2017. That is an interesting tid bit, however it is of little use other than knowing we start the year higher than last year. Of greater use is, to get that 8.7% increase, we started with an 8% down move in January, then we had a 22% up move, followed by a 10% down move, then another 6% up move, then a 5% down move, and finally a year-ending 7% up move. Lumber prices finished the year 8.7% higher, however the market moved 58% throughout the year seven different times. Hey, Lumber Buyer- anticipating when those swings will most likely occur is like finding money on the ground. It is laying there...waiting for you to pick it up. This year I have added price forecasting to the timing forecasts. The former Forecasted Decision Points (FDP) is now Forecasted Time & Price (FTP). The graph below illustrates the past six month's comparison between the Forecasted Time and Price (red) and the actual lumber market (blue). Twice each week Layman's Lumber Guide updates this forecast so you can see when prices are expected to change direction and how much they are expected to rise or fall. The forecast lets us see the past six months and the coming six months. Ladies and gents, our lumber market is evolving. Times are changing. The new FTP is the tool we need, not just to keep up, but to get ahead and stay ahead. There is no longer any excuse for chasing the lumber market. Join us today...only $69 per month. Looking Forward...ml

Snow Loading for Trusses: Why Specifying a Roof Snow Load Isn’t Enough By Kelly Sias, PE, Simpson Strong-Tie®
You might wonder what a quote about winning basketball games could possibly have to do with snow loading on trusses. As with basketball, the importance of close teamwork also applies to a project involving metal-plate-connected wood trusses – for the best outcome, the whole team needs to be on the same page. For purposes of this article, the team includes the Building Designer, the Truss Designer and the Building Official, and the desired outcome is not a win per se, but rather properly loaded trusses. Snow loading on trusses is one area where things may not always go according to the game plan when everyone isn’t in accord. This article will explain how to avoid some common miscommunications about truss loading.
Which snow load are you specifying?
Like all other design loads that apply to trusses, snow loads are determined by the Building Designer and must be specified in the construction documents for use in the design of the building and the roof trusses. But sometimes the loads that are specified don’t provide enough information to ensure that the design will be correct for the specific circumstances. In the case of designs for snow loads, there needs to be a common understanding among all parties regarding the following:
Which snow load value is to be used as the uniform design load for the snow – a ground snow or a factored ground snow?
If it is a factored snow load, then how is the ground snow to be factored?
What other conditions need to be considered besides uniform load?

Sample Snow Load Specification
For example, say the Building Designer specifies that the trusses are to be designed for a 25 psf roof snow load. At first glance, this may appear to make things easier, since there is no need to convert the ground snow to a roof snow load. So what does the Truss Designer do with this load? There are a few different possibilities: If unbalanced snow loading isn’t required or specified, the Truss Designer may enter the 25 psf snow load as a top chord live load (TCLL), set the load duration factor to 1.15 for snow, and turn snow loading off completely. Or the 25 psf snow load could be entered as a roof snow load with the unbalanced snow loading option turned off. Provided that no slope reduction factor gets applied to the specified roof snow load, both of these methods result in the same design. However, whenever a snow load is run as a roof live load rather than a snow load, it may not be clear to all parties involved what exactly the truss has been designed for, since there will be no notes indicating the snow design criteria on the truss design drawing. If unbalanced snow loading is required, things get a bit trickier. There are still two scenarios as to how the truss could be designed, but this time, the design results are different: o
The truss could be designed based on the assumption that ground snow is being used as the roof design snow load (pg = 25 psf); or
o
The truss could be designed based on the assumption that the 25 psf roof snow load is a factored ground snow load, in which case a ground snow load is back-calculated using ASCE 7 based on the specified roof snow load (pg > 25 psf)
Therein lies the problem with specifying only a roof snow load. The determination of the drift load that is required for unbalanced snow load cases requires the use of the ground snow load, pg, not the roof snow load. If the ground snow load isn’t specified, then a ground snow load needs to be assumed – and the Truss Designer and the Building Designer may not be on the same page as it relates to this design assumption.
ASCE 7 Drift Height Calculation
Even when the specification is clear regarding ground snow vs. roof snow load and the applicable snow load reduction factors, there is still the question whether any other conditions need to be considered besides uniform load. This includes not only unbalanced snow loads on standard gable roofs, but also drifting on lower roofs or in valleys, sliding snow, and any other snow-loading and/or snow accumulation considerations. Since trusses are designed as individual planar components,

The truss industry’s Load Guide entitled Guide to Good Practice for Specifying & Applying Loads to Structural Building Components provides a tool to help Building Designers, Building Officials, Truss Designers and others more easily understand, define and specify loads for trusses. The Load Guide has an entire section on snow loading, how specific snowloading provisions apply to trusses and how trusses are typically designed for snow loading within the truss design software.
Snow Load Worksheet from the Load Guide
With printable worksheets that can be used to define the snow loads and examples of multiple snow-loading conditions on different roof and truss profiles, the Load Guide is an invaluable tool for getting everyone on the same page. Safety First! Meeting Topics From State Fund, CA.
Investigación de accidentes Accident Investigation Accidents are unplanned and unexpected events that cause injury, property damage, and/or financial loss in the workplace. Incidents or “near misses” don’t result in loss, but have the potential to do so. Ideally, safety programs focus on preventing accidents and incidents, but if one occurs, have an accident investigation procedure ready and train your employees how to use it. Investigate ALL accidents and injuries; the severity determines the extent of the investigation. Handled properly, accident investigation helps you look at problems, solve them, improve your safety programs, and prevent future accidents. Accident investigation should prevent recurrence. Adhering strictly to fact finding in a neutral, nonconfrontational manner identifies the true attitudes, behaviors, and other factors that led to the problem. Analyzing facts and asking a neutral “why” question helps find the root cause of the accident. For example, if employee error caused the accident, dig further to determine why the employee made the error. Accident investigation should not be used to blame, punish or exonerate workers and managers; true facts will not emerge in this environment. If you investigate an accident just to complete paperwork and satisfy insurance requirements, you will erode confidence in the system and you won’t achieve your goal of prevention and loss reduction. A supervisor in the affected area is the best person to conduct an investigation because they are most familiar with the tools, equipment, and people involved. Experts in equipment, outside agencies, and other technical resources may also be needed. Start your investigation by securing the scene, placing equipment out of service if necessary, and taking photos. Interview victims and witnesses. Collect evidence and records and document your observations. Find the contributing factors to determine the accident’s root cause. Document the recommended corrective actions, the people assigned to complete them, and a due date for completion.

AWC Industry Progress Report shows improvements Environment, energy and safety data detailed WASHINGTON – The American Wood Council (AWC) has released its second Industry Progress Report, detailing the wood products manufacturing industry’s performance across a number of environment, energy and safety measures. “The report shows that there have been significant improvements over the last decade in the areas of environment, energy and safety, despite the economic downturn that caused a drop in wood products manufacturing in 2009,” said President and CEO Robert Glowinski. “AWC members are very proud of their record of mill safety, energy management and efficiency, and protection of the environment while producing products that are central to the lives and homes of all Americans.” Key findings of the report include: •
The broad forest products industry is the largest producer and user of bioenergy of any industrial sector. AWC member companies have met over 75 percent of their energy needs, on average, from biomass over the last decade.
•
The greenhouse gas reduction benefits of using biomass manufacturing residuals for energy by industry are equivalent to about 24 million tons of carbon dioxide – or the equivalent of removing approximately 4.6 million cars from the road each year.
•
The 10-year trend has shown significant reductions in chemical releases, which includes formaldehyde and methanol.
•
Energy intensity has improved significantly since the 2008-09 recession and has dropped slightly below pre-recession levels.
•
Worker safety has improved between 2004 and 2014 for member companies, and the two reported safety metrics are consistently lower than all manufacturing during the same period.
The full Industry Progress Report is available on the AWC website at awc.org/aboutus. # # # The American Wood Council (AWC) is the voice of North American wood products manufacturing, representing over 75 percent of an industry that provides approximately 400,000 men and women in the United States with family-wage jobs. AWC members make products that are essential to everyday life from a renewable resource that absorbs and sequesters carbon. Staff experts develop state-of-the-art engineering data, technology, and standards for wood products to assure their safe and efficient design, as well as provide information on wood design, green building, and environmental regulations. AWC also advocates for balanced government policies that affect wood products.

If you’re hiring or looking for a job, watch the Super Bowl telecast just before half-time. You’ll see the seriousness of the struggle for good people in our industry. After viewing, you may question the Super-sized investment. But, in your business, you know that you have to spend money to make money. Why not spend it to get great people?
Project: The Carnival Cruise Straw Market Grand Turk, TCI
Would you believe that this groundbreaking ad arose from within the ranks of the advertiser? Prompted by a simple question from the owner, “What can I do to help you?” The one word answer, “People,” eliciting the bold, even Trumpian owner’s response – “We’ll just buy a Super Bowl commercial.” I’m not saying this ad will be as effective as the ground-breaking 1984 Macintosh c o m m e r c i a l . We may not be Apple, but our underthe-radar industry needs great people just as much. What aspiring entrepreneur wouldn’t enjoy a career designing 3D models, or building structures with computers – ultimately with robotics (see article on page 13). It is high time that our great industry is recognized as a great career choice; by 100 million viewers, no less!
