Moving is often one of life’s stressful events for all ages Whether your move is local or long-distance, how you help your children prepare mentally for the move is instrumental. Some observations I’ve made through my nearly 20 years of helping people make moves include: • Presentation is key, both of the event and of yourself. • Within reason, let them play part; sometimes little things can mean a lot. With their parents’ permission of course during a showing where a child was getting teary that a bedroom they were looking at didn’t “look the same” as their current one, I assured them that their new room can be yellow too instead of blue like the one shown. • Where possible, finding schools and activities in the start of a house tour has helped some visualize their new area better. Some kids thought “it’s too far for me to go to school” not fully understanding that there will be a school in their new area. What we take for granted, remember, this could be a child’s first move or at least first they remember. • Keep moving-related conversations around them as light as possible in front of them, or have conversations about inspections, negotiations, financing not in front of them especially if stressful. “Little pitchers have big ears” can pick up on stressful vibes. It can be stressful at times, and it can be exciting and fun. Here’s to new beginnings!
