More questions raised about town’s licensing process

usiness licensing issues dominated the Jan. 6 Select Board meeting after public participants leveled accusations against the town manager, the Select Board and a Mexican restaurant for what they saw as lack of adherence to town policies.

Marie Laskowsky, an Ashland resident, has been a frequent and vocal participant during public comment periods at Select Board meetings over the past several months. Her remarks have focused on the issuance of common victualer (CV) license renewals to Petros “Peter” Sismanis, the disgraced owner of the former Hiller’s Pizza restaurant, as well as to the town’s license review process. John Laskowsky often has appeared with her and made comments to the board.

andy Lehane blames it all on her dad — kiddingly, of course. A runner in high school, Lehane had hung up her running shoes when her father told her in 2011 that he would be “so proud” to see her run the Boston Marathon.

“I should have been glad that he didn’t say he’d be proud to see me go to the moon,” Lehane said.

What she is about to tackle might sound just as wild as taking off in a rocket ship. After running 14 Boston Marathons, Lehane in January will tackle the event known as the Great World Race. It’s seven marathons, in seven days, on seven continents.

“Either you think this is the craziest thing ever, or you immediately feel like you have to do it,” Lehane said.

Concerns raised about Center School roof

Q

uestions were raised about the age and condition of the roof at the former Center School during a Jan. 6 meeting of the Permanent Building Committee.

Committee members agreed to look into the cost of a potential full replacement in case that scope of work would be needed.

The question of the roof’s history was part of an ongoing review of plans for the former Center School, now vacant, which is located at 11 Ash Street.

The local firm of Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects (GRLA) is developing plans for the school, which opened in 1928 and closed 90 years later in 2018.

Town Meeting members last May unanimously approved a request for $600,000 to fund construction bid documents and engineering plans to determine the future of the building.

This funding, which was allocated through the Community Preservation Committee, allowed a request for proposals to go forward for a $10 million project.

The roof of the building has an uncertain history, Jeremy Toal, integrated services project manager for GRLA, told committee members.

A roof replacement reportedly was done in 2004, he said, and parts of the structure, including metal ridge caps and snow guards, wouldn’t have been there in 1928, when the building was constructed.

But the discovery of rust stains and broken slates indicate at least portions of the roof is older, he said.

“If there was a full replacement 20 years ago, you shouldn’t be seeing rust stains everywhere and broken slates,’’ Toal said.

Committee members will research the issue to determine the exact history of work done on the roof. They also agreed to at least get a cost estimate for a full replacement, even if that had to be budgeted for further down the road.

Representatives of the architectural firm have stressed the importance of sustainability and accessibility. Toal has said the goal is to have the building fully electric.

The Historic District Commission is scheduled to review plans for the project at its Jan. 14 meeting.

GRLA principal and co-founder Scott Richardson said he hopes to put the plans together to get a cost estimate soon while continuing to work on refining the design.

This will allow the design work to continue with “much better information,’’ he said.

The building’s future plans call for the demolition of the two additions in the rear of the building. The historic front building architecture will be maintained.

The building is scheduled to house Hopkinton Center for the Arts programming and the town’s Parks & Recreation and Youth & Family Services departments.

The reuse of the school is a publicprivate partnership between the town and the Hopkinton Center for the Arts.

Annual Town Meeting warrant open

T

he warrant for the 2026 Annual Town Meeting is open for article submissions.

In a recent notice, Assistant Town Manager Lance DelPriore stated that the warrant was to open Jan. 2 and close Feb. 1. Citizen petitioners may submit articles NEWS to DelPriore via email or BRIEFS in-person at Town Hall. A guide for petitioners can be found on the town website.

Town Manager Elaine Lazarus shared that the Select Board, town departments and committees are finalizing their warrant articles soon. She added that the Capital Improvement Committee has completed its review of capital requests from each department and “recommended many of them.”

Some of these requests include $2 million for a land purchase at 280 Cedar Street, $1.5 million for an HVAC unit at the Hopkinton Police Department, a $2 million request from the Community Preservation Committee for the Center School reuse project and $9.8 million requested for water main replacement on East Main Street from the water enterprise fund.

Warrant articles under consideration by the Select Board include a bylaw amendment regarding civil fingerprinting for common victualer’s licenses and a new bylaw for e-bikes.

This year’s Annual Town Meeting will be Saturday, May 2 — a change from previous years. Residents voted last year to move Town Meeting to Saturday in an effort to increase accessibility.

“It would be great if we could improve attendance by having it on a Saturday,” said Lazarus.

“We won’t know until the day,” she added.

Vaccine changes might not have local effect The Hopkinton Health Department is waiting to see how the state and region will respond to a recent move by the federal government to reduce the number of recommended vaccines for children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Jan. 5 that it plans to reduce the number of recommended vaccines for children from 17 to 11.

“It effectively adds a barrier to obtaining an influenza, rotavirus, [hepatitis] A and B and meningitis vaccine,” Shaun McAuliffe, Hopkinton’s health director, stated in an email.

The CDC’s updated immunization schedule follows a directive from President Trump “to review international best practices from peer, developed countries,” according to a press release.

McAuliffe claimed that the removal of those vaccines could strip certain legal protections from the companies that produce them. “If the manufacturers are subject to litigation, they are less likely to produce vaccines,” he explained.

According to McAuliffe, the change comes during an acute flu season. WCVB reported Jan. 6 that confirmed flu cases in Boston increased 126% between Dec. 14-27, and hospitalizations nearly tripled.

The Independent has requested data on the number of flu cases in Hopkinton.

McAuliffe stated that he believed the Northeast Public Health Collaborative — a coalition of northeastern states spanning from Maine to Maryland formed in 2025 — may choose not to recognize the changes. Gov. Maura Healey also stated

in a press release that Massachusetts will continue to “recommend and provide easy access” to these vaccines.

“We may not be impacted,” McAuliffe concluded.

HPD cruiser in crash A crash late last month involving a Hopkinton Police Department cruiser pursuing a call was being investigated by an independent crash reconstruction team, according to the department’s deputy police chief.

“On December 26, 2025, at approximately 8:39 PM, a fully marked Hopkinton Police cruiser was responding to a call when a crash occurred at the intersection of Main St. and Cedar St,” stated HPD Deputy Police Chief Scott van Raalten in an email to the Independent. “The officer operating the cruiser was transported to Milford Hospital, where he was treated and released later that evening. The operator and passengers of the other vehicle declined medical treatment.”

Van Raalten noted that this intersection was closed “for approximately two hours to allow an outside agency to investigate the crash.”

He added: “The investigation is being conducted by the CEMLEC (Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council) Crash Reconstruction Team.”

McFarland-Sanger House future discussed The Historical Commission on Jan. 6 discussed the future of the McFarlandSanger House as the process to sell the property continues.

Chair Michael Roughan informed the commission that Deerfield Estates, a condominium development near the property on Lumber Street, might consider an arrangement with the town.

“I think they were very interested in the arrangement that the [Hopkinton Center for the Arts] has with the town where it’s a $1 lease for 99 years,” said Roughan.

The historic house, considered one of the oldest properties in Hopkinton, is owned by the town. The Select Board in September approved issuing a request for proposals (RFP) to seek a buyer for the property. Grading and sewer system issues at the site make it difficult to rehabilitate.

The owner of Deerfield Estates previously showed no interest in buying the property, which would come with historic preservation restrictions.

Roughan added that such an arrangement would “absolve them [of] some of their concerns for liability.”

Commission members discussed maintaining and updating the house if Deerfield were to take over the governance of the building. Roughan stated that the Historical Commission previously had committed to use Community Preservation funds to restore the property.

“I see no reason why we wouldn’t continue even if Deerfield were to consider either ownership or a lease,” he said.

“There’s no reason we can’t go to the state … and try to dip into some of the available funding,” added member Scott Knous.

Member Brian Collela inquired about another potential buyer that had expressed interest in the property. Roughan responded that it would “behoove” the commission to work out a deal with Deerfield because the complex could restore the property’s sewer connection.

he Conservation Commission on Jan. 6 approved a certificate of compliance for the Whisper Way subdivision in a 6-0 vote.

This vote clears the way for the developers to seek approval for Whisper Way as a town road at the May 2 Annual Town Meeting.

Developer Craig Nation addressed relatively minor outstanding issues from the previous meeting on Dec. 16 regarding the sustainability of vegetation planted in a restoration area. At that meeting, Mark Arnold from Goddard Consulting noted that this area was created to compensate for several wetland crossings caused by the project. While vegetation has flourished, some shrubs and trees have died.

Chair Melissa Recos noted that the wetland vegetation cover was “at about 90%.” Although some “woody vegetation” has died, she explained that “the function and performance of the wetland area” were the determining factors for meeting compliance.

A report shared by Goddard Consulting noted that this area was monitored for three years. Invasives frequently were pulled by Craig and Ron Nation.

“It seems to me like this area just wants to be vegetation, not necessarily forested,” said Recos.

Mowed paths that were used during the reforestation process will be allowed to regrow naturally. Craig Nation explained that they are not more than 6 feet wide and could serve as walking paths. Recos agreed.

The drainage systems were inspected by the town’s peer review consultant as part of a Planning Board review, added Recos. They will be overseen by the developer. The systems will be turned over to the town if Whisper Way is accepted as a town road.

Goddard Consulting tried unsuccessfully to certify a small vernal pool.

The commission continued two hearings regarding property at 12 North Mill Street until Jan. 27 in order to get updated plans. But members expressed approval of the developer’s goal of filling in some of the wetland in order to build a drinking water well for a proposed home.

Developer Lou Petrozzi explained that his proposal was going to be reviewed by the Board of Health at its Jan. 12 meeting. He was doubtful that it would be approved there without the commission’s support in advance.

Petrozzi provided plans at this meeting that increased the wetland replication area. Members previously pointed out that the disturbed area needed to be replaced at a 1.5/1 ratio, which prompted the adjustment.

He added that most of the comments he received from peer review consultant Joe Orzel seemed “administrative in nature.”

Orzel explained that some comments “went away” when a previously proposed crossing of a wetland stream was removed. But he addressed some outstanding issues.

He continued to recommend that Petrozzi submit an invasive species management plan. The construction sequence plan, replication plan, bordering vegetated wetlands plan and narrative all needed to be modified to align with the current plans. Also, the 125-foot buffer demarcation was not noted on the current plan’s southeast side.

Orzel also asked if Petrozzi had considered “innovative alternative septic system designs” that would allow for decreased soil absorption. This plan did not specify which trees were being removed, he said.

Petrozzi responded that he can’t look at septic system options if he does not know if the well will be approved by the Board of Health. He called this “a cat-and-mouse type of situation.”

He requested that the revisions Orzel called out be “incorporated into an order of conditions” so that the commission would grant its approval. He would then have 21 days until the next meeting to submit the required information. Petrozzi added that it “doesn’t make any sense” to delineate removed trees on the plan if the site already has been cleared.

Recos balked, noting that the commission had been “burned” by previous developers who failed to meet this type of scenario. Conservation administrator Judy Day agreed that the plans should be accurate before a vote.

The developer said he hoped to receive “something positive” from the commission before the Board of Health appearance.

After some discussion, members worked toward a compromise. Co-vice chair Matt Matthew Moyen suggested that the commission submit a letter to the Board of Health “stating that we’re amenable to the well being located in the wetland.”

Trail revision hearing continued The commission voted 6-0 to continue a proposed trail revision hearing until the next meeting so that more details could be provided. The proposed trail would connect the Windsor at Hopkinton housing development to Berry Acres at the Chamberlain Street extension.

“This will enable people from Windsor Apartments and the West Main Street business district to use this path to go to the Chamberlain extension,” explained Trails Committee member Sean Kimball.

The ultimate goal for the Trails Committee is to create access for residents to the schools via trails, he added.

ising cost estimates and lack of support from the Planning Board led the Parks & Recreation Commission on Dec. 16 to withdraw its funding requests for the Pyne Field redesign project and evaluate other avenues for developing athletic fields in town.

The vote stalls progress on the project, which has been in the works since 2022. Parks & Rec had spent most of the past year hearing community feedback and preparing the project for review by the Planning Board.

At its meeting Dec. 15, the Planning Board gave negative feedback on the current redesign plan, which includes a cricket pitch and a baseball field.

Parking would sit on the other side of an easement used by JB Sawmill. The board felt this arrangement was a major safety concern.

“If there was an official vote, which there was not [Dec. 15], they would vote the project down,” Parks & Rec Director Jon Lewitus told the commission. “They do not think the current design of the project is safe.”

using the sawmill’s access road instead of the parking area also were brought up. The Planning Board would not waive requirements for an electric vehicle (EV) charging station, either.

During the commission’s discussion, Lewitus brought up additional concerns of ballooning costs and maintenance.

In 2022, the Community Preservation Committee approved $1 million for the project. A 90% submission plan provided by Gale Associates in September increased the anticipated budget to around $1.9 million. Adding EV chargers would further expand the estimated cost.

“I’m anticipating a minimum of $3 million to get this project done, and that’s as it’s currently situated,” said Lewitus.

The director also voiced concerns over recuperating the maintenance costs for the redesigned fields from its user groups. He noted that he had received pushback from the local cricket organizations and that Hopkinton Little League considered Pyne Field lower on its priority list for play space.

The commission reviewed its options given the latest feedback from the Planning Board. “Do we pull the plug, look at a redesign, or do we look at Parks & Rec | 5

other locations in town?” Lewitus asked.

“It’s not worth continuing to pursue, given the cost and approval barriers,” said vice chair Kyle Smith.

Member Amy O’Donnell agreed.

“Without the support of the Planning Board, we’re just going to keep butting up against a variety of different issues,” she said.

Commission members agreed there were still opportunities to make improvements to Pyne Field and find space at other locations in town for both the cricket and baseball fields.

“Over the next 4-6 years, there’s going to be some space available at Elmwood School [and] potentially at Center School,” said chair Dan Terry.

“I think this also buys us some time to include other properties in the mix and potentially have more of a long-range plan for an investment in fields.”

Following the discussion, Parks & Rec took two votes on the project, and both passed unanimously. The first withdrew the department’s current CPC request for additional funds. The second vote adopted a CPC recommendation to modify the approved funding request.

This would require a vote at Annual Town Meeting in May and allow the commission to explore other options.

“We’re going to get something done,” said Terry. “It might just take some time.”

Parks & Rec ‘leans in’ to skate park graffiti The commission indicated interest in integrating graffiti at the Hank

Fredette Skate Park following a recent tagging incident.

Hopkinton Police opened an investigation into individuals who spray painted the ramps and other structures at the skate park in late November. An officer at the time noted that street art is a part of skate culture and, without a regular police presence and security cameras, tagging likely would occur again.

Lewitus offered the commission two options to address the issue. He either could have it cleaned and ask police to monitor the area closer, or make the graffiti a feature of the park. He noted the latter option was popular with skate parks in other towns.

“I talked to two other Parks & Rec departments who have had similar issues, and that’s the angle they have gone [with],” said Lewitus.

Multiple comments on an HPD Facebook post suggested holding a sanctioned street art event at the park.

Commission members were open to similar ideas. Smith stated it might be better to “lean in” to the graffiti rather than combating it. “Cleaning and fighting it seems like the wrong way to go,” he said. “I think we’re going to lose.”

O’Donnell brought up concerns over keeping the existing graffiti, expressing a worry over whether it was done in the spirit of skate culture or to be malicious.

Lewitus noted he was planning on cleaning up any of the tags that contained expletives. He also informed the commission that he was to be meeting with a high school student later in the week to discuss a potential graffiti project.

Planning Board debates MBTA Communities zoning options

T

he Planning Board on Jan. 5 reviewed four new proposals for MBTA Communities overlay zoning district modifications because the previously approved plan did not fully meet the state’s zoning requirements.

Principal planner Aneri Patel pointed out at the Dec. 8 Zoning Advisory Committee (ZAC) meeting that the town’s plan approved at the 2024 Special Town Meeting in November 2024 failed to meet the 50% contiguous area district requirement. At least one of Hopkinton’s districts must be 27.3 acres,

according to this condition. Walcott Valley, The Preserve and the downtown districts equal 10.8, 22.9 and 15.5 acres, respectively.

ZAC reviewed the four new plans that it believed would address the state’s concern at its two December meetings.

On Dec. 17, it recommended what it called Plan E. This plan would add a strip of nine parcels on Walcott Street to connect the downtown district with Walcott Valley, making it one 31.718acre contiguous district. Three of these parcels are zoned for residential use, according to Patel. The remaining six are part of the downtown business district.

This proposal would not modify the boundaries of the current subdistricts, Patel said at both the Planning Board and ZAC meetings.

“I think the obvious question at Town Meeting that I would expect is why wouldn’t we make this district as small as possible,” said chair Rob Benson. “Why would we add here and not subtract?”

He suggested removing the parcels in the current downtown district south of Main Street.

In addition to being more than having 50% contiguous area, the modified district would have to meet the other state requirements. Added Patel: “ZAC’s main focus was to add and combine and make it as one district.”

Member Parker Happ said he favored Plan B. He said the board should “be thinking larger just to be safe” as well as to the town’s future development needs.

Plan B proposed adding 10 parcels between the downtown district and Walcott Valley. It would merge these two areas to create a contiguous subdistrict of about 31.7 acres. This plan also would remove approximately nine parcels south of South Street from the current downtown district.

According to Patel, a concern with this plan is the inclusion of properties near Claflin Street, which several street residents protested. The residents noted the development of two multifamily dwellings already in the works for Claflin Street, Patel said.

Vice chair Matthew Wronka, the ZAC liaison, explained that Plan E was recommended because it would “not overwhelm Town Meeting” by making “as little of a change as possible.” Adding land to create one large district was deemed the most viable option for Town Meeting and state approval.

Benson said he agreed that connecting these two districts was the “most palatable option.”

A concern with Plan E, Wronka noted, was that the state may believe that the thin strip may make the district’s shape seem “contrived.” “[The] state might say that you just added those parcels to make it one [district],” added Patel.

“Well, that’s what we’re doing,” countered Benson. “If they say we’re doing this to meet their requirement, my answer would be yes.”

Plan B was frowned upon by ZAC because it is “very wooded” and more likely to be developed, Wronka noted.

Member Lucia Lopez said she preferred Plan C. Plan C would add approximately 13 parcels along A Street and Walcott Street to build a wider connection between the downtown area and Walcott Valley. It would remove CVS and the fire station from the previously approved district. Patel told ZAC that this change would affect the gross density and unit capacity, making it less viable for approval.

Patel noted that she has not yet received feedback from the state on the plans. Benson requested that she get information on whether these plans meet the requirements “ASAP.” This issue will be revisited at the

next meeting on Jan. 26.

Hearing continued for proposed Lumber Street building The board voted unanimously to continue the hearing regarding a proposed one-story office and retail building for a lot off Lumber Street until the next meeting. The 3.46-acre site is fully vegetated and undeveloped.

REC Hopkinton submitted the proposal for the 2,400-square-foot building, according to Kathi Sherry, who represented the applicant.

Sherry said a veterinary clinic already expressed interest in locating there. This prompted a variance application to the Board of Appeals. While the land is zoned for medical and commercial uses, she explained that veterinary usage was not specified under the zoning code.

She added that this land is part of the master plan for neighborhood mixed-use development approved in 2015. It is adjacent to the Windsor at Hopkinton apartment complex on Constitution Court.

Engineer John Federico said the building will be divided into three 800-square-foot units. There will be 15 parking spaces. An “ADA-accessible sidewalk” will lead from the one accessible parking space out to Lumber Street.

He also pointed out that the project previously received Conservation Commission approval of an order of conditions for the project. Part of that review included approval of the stormwater management plan.

New plantings are proposed, and the site will be “well buffered on three sides” by existing vegetation, he added.

Lopez questioned whether the stormwater management plan was forwarded to Kerry Reed, the Department of Public Works director. She said Reed’s notes to the Planning Board on the project “mentioned some concerns about stormwater runoff.” Patel said she would check with Reed.

Wronka asked if walking paths were proposed in addition to the sidewalk.

He noted that the 5-foot-wide sidewalk would accommodate pedestrians but not bicycles or other nonmotorized vehicles.

Federico said he could discuss a wider sidewalk with the applicant if it is needed. He also said he would ask about adding infrastructure for EV charging stations in response to a question from Happ.

Select Board prefers shorter-term TIF with pickleball/padel club

he Select Board on Jan. 6 provided feedback on a draft tax increment financing (TIF) agreement between the town and the owner of a new pickleball/ padel club. Members suggested negotiating a shorter-term agreement than proposed while noting that the applicant entered into this process late in the game.

Tax increment financing (TIF) agreements allow new businesses to pay lower tax rates when they initially open if they provide a community benefit. The amount gradually increases as the business becomes more established.

The TIF agreement must receive approval at the May 2 Annual Town Meeting. The terms would go into effect on the date of occupancy, Town Manager Elaine Lazarus said.

The Select Board at its Oct. 7 meeting authorized Lazarus to enter into negotiations with Yev Galper, the founder of Open Play Pickleball & Padel Club. Galper at that time noted that the club, located at 124 East Main Street, represents a $5.5 million investment in the town. It also provides a “state-of-the-art” facility for padel, which he said is rapidly becoming popular in the United States. The facility intends to operate 19 indoor and outdoor courts.

Member Matthew Kizner shared Clark’s concerns. While he indicated he is supportive of Open Play and believes it will succeed, he said he didn’t think the venture “is something that we should be subsidizing.”

Member Amy Ritterbusch said she had “mixed feelings” about the TIF. She noted that the property had been vacant for a long time. The town also is trying to be more business friendly.

She added that she would be more receptive to a shorter-term agreement.

Also, Ritterbusch said she has not heard much public feedback about Open Play.

Vice chair Shahidul Mannan said the negotiators should “go back a little bit to the financial drawing board.” He suggested reducing the term to three years and capping the amount of lost revenue at “$150K max.” Additionally, he proposed a “clawback” mechanism if the business is successful financially.

Member Brian Herr suggested putting any proposed benefits in writing, as well as an annual review to ensure that they are provided.

Clark added that the business already is being built. Usually, TIFs are incentives for businesses that are considering investing in a community.

“We are not opposed to a TIF,” explained Kizner. “We are not opposed to working with you. But we want to work up front, and we want it to be because you want to be here.”

result of that case, he was required to register as a sex offender. Yet he continued to receive CV licenses.

Sismanis, a native of Greece, was found guilty in June of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14 years of age and two counts of witness intimidation. He was charged with these offenses in January 2023. Sismanis was removed from prison and reportedly was being held in the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island, by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigators.

This case sparked protests in town and led to the Select Board’s discussions on modifying the CV license issuance process to include Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registration Information (SORI) checks.

At the Nov. 18 meeting, the board discussed moving the responsibility for CORI checks to the Town Manager’s Office from the Hopkinton Police Department. No vote was taken. Members said they wanted to seek legal counsel.

They voiced concerns about overreach on this and other proposed process modifications.

Sismanis had submitted a CV license renewal request on Dec. 13, 2024, after the application deadline. There was no vote on the license renewal at that time, he noted, and “no contingencies, nothing,” despite the pending charges against Sismanis.

He accused Town Manager Elaine Lazarus of allowing Hillers Pizza to operate “for 21 days without a valid business license in this town.”

The license renewal, he said, was placed “swiftly and just stealthily” on the consent agenda for the Jan. 21, 2025, Select Board meeting. He also made other accusations regarding the entertainment and alcohol licenses for Hillers Pizza.

In addition, he said that CORI checks were not done despite being part of the town’s CV policy since 2021. He accused Lazarus of saying that they were not required at subsequent Select Board meetings.

Marie Laskowsky accused Lazarus of removing HPD input from the CV approval process during the recent policy review. Regarding HPD input and SORI checks, she said Lazarus “employed these new processes in year-end 2025 renewals.” She said Lazarus implemented the new policies “unilaterally.”

Said Marie Laskowsky: “Show us the Select Board vote that authorized removing police from licensing oversight or even adding a SORI. You will not find it.”

Marie Laskowsky presented a packet to Select Board chair Joe Clark, noting that it contained the documentation for issues they raised.

The Laskowskys also alleged that Lazarus, who previously served as the assistant town manager, allowed CV license renewals to move forward without CORI checks.

The Independent spoke with both Lazarus and the Laskowskys the following day to clarify the issues raised.

Marie Laskowsky reiterated that Hillers Pizza’s CV renewal at the end of 2024 was submitted late and the board was unable to address it until Jan. 21, 2025. She expressed worry over the fact that Hillers was allowed to remain in operation and the item was tucked into the consent agenda.

“There is no accountability,” Marie Laskowsky claimed. “There is no process.”

Lazarus stated she could not speak to why the license renewal was part of the Jan. 21, 2025, consent agenda, as the overall agenda is the purview of the Select Board chair. She added that the board still has the capacity to pull out an item from consent for discussion on request from a member.

Another issue raised by the Laskowskys was an entertainment license application filed by Hillers in December 2018. Per town policy, licensees must submit a CORI request form with their application. However, the requirement “may be waived at the discretion of the [Select] Board if the licensee holds a common victualer’s or liquor license.”

A CORI for Sismanis never materialized through this process, according to Lazarus. She added that the board “acted in accordance” with a discussion that occurred in executive session in January 2018 with Sismanis regarding complaints filed against him.

“The questions and comments Tuesday evening around common victualer licenses and the like stemmed from the Hillers Pizza saga,” he stated. “They had nothing to do with Orale Mexican Restaurant. The license transfer for Orale was properly documented, supported and approved by town staff and the Select Board. We wish Orale the absolute best going forward in Hopkinton.”

The Select Board, per its policy, does not respond to public comments during meetings to allow time to review information presented. But licensing issues arose later in the meeting that allowed Marie Laskowsky to make further comments and provide more information that affected a local restaurant.

The board held a public hearing on the transfer of an all-alcohol license for Orale Mexican Restaurant at 22-24 Main Street. Members appeared poised to allow the license transfer from Mauricio Bremermann, its current holder, to Victor Roman when Marie Laskowsky asked to speak regarding the process.

She asked the board if there was an inquiry to see “if there are other individuals that have a financial stake in [the applicant] or in the business.”

“We don’t know that to be fact,” interjected member Brian Herr regarding whether the policy required this action.

He said it needed to be verified by town counsel.

Marie Laskowsky replied that she presented that information in the packet.

She also said Lazarus should be able to “provide that that is a policy.”

Turning toward Bremermann, Marie Laskowsky asked him if anyone else had a financial stake in his business.

“I’m incredibly uncomfortable with where this discussion has gone,” said member Matthew Kizner. He told Marie

Laskowsky that she was “essentially acting as a proxy member of the board,” which is not allowed. He also said the accusations made against Lazarus were “beginning to feel personal.”

Clark said the issues she raised would be reviewed by town counsel. He added that the board “did not move forward on” questioning potential financial businesses stakeholders during its CV license policy discussions.

At that point, Marie Laskowsky said that the owner’s name on the CV renewal application submitted in November differed from Bremermann’s name.

Members discussed whether this new information would be relevant to the license transfer. They ultimately voted 4-0-1 to approve the transfer, with Kizner abstaining, citing his desire not to set a precedent.

On Jan. 8, Herr reached out to the Independent to express his disappointment that Orale was included in the same discussion as Hillers Pizza, noting that Orale had no reason to be cast in a negative light.

After discussion, the board voted unanimously to grant license renewals to six businesses and extensions to 24 others that have not yet been inspected by the town. Most of these were CV licenses.

Orale Mexican Restaurant, Alltown Fresh, Carbone’s Restaurant, Country Farm Liquors, BoMain Pizza Bar & Grill and Whitehall Auto Sales completed all of the state and town requirements in a timely manner, Lazarus told the board.

Due to the information the Laskowskys presented, members debated whether they should extend the license renewal period for all renewals until Jan. 21, the day after the next Select Board meeting. This would allow time for feedback from town counsel, Clark said.

“This notion around new information, we really need to put that aside, OK,” said Herr. “We cannot run this town based on new information presented at meetings because somebody’s mad at somebody else.”

ZAC votes on MBTA Communities zoning plan to recommend

T

he Zoning Advisory Committee on Dec. 17 voted 6-0 for a zoning plan that would allow Hopkinton to meet compliance requirements under the MBTA Communities Act. According to its chair, it would “build a bridge” between two current zoning subdistricts in the least invasive way possible out of the options the committee considered.

Under the MBTA Communities Act, 177 cities and towns in the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s service area were required to approve new zoning that requires multifamily housing near public transportation. It was signed into law Jan. 14, 2021. Several communities balked and were threatened with losing some state funding if they did not comply.

The denser housing, in theory, would encourage more people to take the T and depend less on cars. It also would help meet the state’s demand for more housing.

Hopkinton was designated as an MBTA-adjacent community because of its proximity to the Southborough commuter rail station. In order to comply with the law, the zoning districts must accommodate 750 units at a density of 15 units per acre on 50 or more acres of developable land in addition having one district meet the 50% contiguous area stipulation.

At the 2024 Annual Town Meeting, voters rejected the proposed plan by eight votes. This prompted the need for a Special Town Meeting (STM) in November 2024.

After a contentious process, STM approved the article by a 236-167 vote. The plan included The Preserve and Walcott Valley condominium developments and the downtown area. While it created a zoning overlay district, it does not mandate housing development.

But this plan was not vetted beforehand by the state because of a time crunch before STM, noted Zoning Advisory Committee (ZAC) chair Ted Barker-Hook.

The state determined it to be missing one

crucial element, putting the town in conditional compliance until May 29, 2026.

Principal planner Aneri Patel pointed out at the Dec. 8 ZAC meeting that the town’s plan failed to meet the 50% contiguous area requirement. At least one of Hopkinton’s districts must be 27.3 acres, according to this condition. Walcott Valley, The Preserve and the downtown subdistricts equal 10.8, 22.9 and 15.5 acres, respectively.

An option that meets the requirements must be voted on at ATM on May 2 in order to be sent by the state and approved by the deadline. The warrant opens Jan. 2 and closes Feb. 1. This provides a window for the Planning Board to recommend a zoning article. ZAC was charged with creating a plan that would be viable for Planning Board and ATM approval.

Lasting financial change is difficult to achieve. Understanding why resolutions fail can help turn intentions into sustainable strategies.

1. Unrealistic Expectations

The most common reason resolutions fail is that goals don’t match reality.

For example, someone might plan to save half their income while paying off long-standing loans, only to realize monthly expenses and unexpected bills make this unrealistic. Progress feels slow, leading to frustration and eventual abandonment.

Resolution: Break goals into smaller, achievable steps. For example, aim to reduce debt by 25% over six months. Celebrating incremental wins keeps motivation high, builds confidence, and reinforces the habit of financial discipline.

2. Lack of a Clear Plan

or “get out of debt” offer little guidance.

Goals like these are the financial equivalent of saying “eat healthier” without changing what’s in your fridge.

Rules and opportunities change yearly, so without a clear plan, it’s easy to miss important steps like evolving retirement contribution rules, tax planning opportunities, or other proactive financial strategies.

Resolution: Create a clear plan. Review monthly expenses, budget upcoming projects and aspirations, set up automatic transfers, and monitor progress.

3. Failure to Track Progress

Goals fade without structured review, even when apps are used to track spending. Many avoid holistic review until problems become too great to ignore.

Even small oversights like pausing emergency savings transfers, frequent DoorDashing restaurants a mile away, or buying from social media ads can derail intentions. It’s also important to evaluate actual income, since “spenders” believe their pay will match their top year, overlooking factors like unique company performance or equity grants.

Resolution: Schedule quarterly check-ins that leverage technology and constructive feedback. Celebrating milestones helps maintain motivation and reinforces strong financial habits.

4. Emotional Spending and Instant Gratification

Many people struggle with impulse spending or seek instant gratification, especially after a stressful day. Afraid to look at your Amazon spending history?

This behavior derails the best-laid plans.

Resolution: Identify triggers and implement strategies to delay or review purchase decisions. Create a spending prioritization strategy by identifying where you want to spend your money; this helps shift focus from immediate desires to long-term financial goals and encourages thoughtful, deliberate financial choices.

5. Lack of Accountability

Some thrive independently; others struggle without support. It’s easier to justify financial decisions when no one else is watching. Couples, friends, or professional advisors who provide accountability often help keep each other honest and motivated.

Resolution: Accountability goes beyond “no.” Sharing progress and receiving guidance builds confidence, strengthens financial habits, and motivates continued long-term efforts.

Quick Hits To Start 2026

401(k) Catch-Up Rules: Workers age 50 and older earning more than $150,000 must direct catch-up contributions to Roth accounts, reducing traditional tax benefits.

Roth Conversions: Converting pre-tax accounts to Roth can be strategic but may trigger higher taxes if not timed carefully. Consider modeling scenarios in the first quarter.

Cash Reserves: With slower job growth in late 2025, increasing emergency savings can help avoid reliance on credit or early retirement withdrawals.

Final Thoughts

Financial resolutions can be powerful tools for long-term security but require more than wishful thinking.

Make 2026 the year to socialize your goals, set action steps, and partner with a certified financial planner to turn intentions into lasting progress.

proposed adding approximately 10 parcels between the downtown and Walcott Valley. It would merge these two areas to create a contiguous subdistrict of about 31.7 acres.

This plan also would remove approximately nine parcels south of South Street from the current downtown district. According to Patel, a concern with this plan is the inclusion of properties near Claflin Street.

Plan C would add approximately 13 parcels along A Street and Walcott Street to build a wider connection between the downtown area and Walcott Valley. This design creates a district of around 28.6 acres and a 51.5% contiguous area.

Barker-Hook noted that Plan C would remove CVS and the fire station from the previously approved zoning.

Patel said this change would affect the gross density and unit capacity, making it less workable.

Two newer options were considered to be more amenable to committee members. Both would add a strip of parcels on Walcott Street to connect the downtown area with Walcott Valley. Plan D would add three parcels between A Street and Walcott Street to Plan E. While Plan D would equal about 33.218 acres, Plan E would consist of 32.718 acres.

Patel recommended both of these options because they would add a small number of parcels without removing anything that was approved previously.

“All we really need to do is build a bridge,” stressed Barker-Hook, noting that Patel created the last option that afternoon.

He added that while Plan D creates “a stronger bridge,” that may make that area “a bigger enticement to developers.”

Chair shares zoning observations Barker-Hook performed his own analysis of zoning in the downtown business district. He pointed out that Hopkinton allows mixed-use developments by right. This would be like the apartment building currently under construction at the former Hopkinton Drug site. Retail is included on the first floor, with apartments on the upper floors. A “purely residential building,” he added, would need a special permit.

In contrast, the MBTA Communities zoning directive allows “only residential by right.”

Barker-Hook gave a hypothetical example. If CVS and Marty’s Fine Wines were to move out of their current locations on Main Street, that land could be developed as housing without a retail component.

“I think that’s worth keeping in mind,” he said.

Another point Barker-Hook made is that the minimum lot size for residential development is 15,000 square feet. But the minimum lot size in an MBTA lot size is 5,000 square feet. He displayed a couple of lots on A Street near Cedar Street (Route 85) that are more than 5,000 square feet and potentially developable.

continue to raise funds for the Michael Lisnow Respite Center, a Hopkinton nonprofit that serves individuals with disabilities and their families.

“They are such a small organization, I didn’t know what they would say, but there is no other organization I would want to run for, no other organization that would be my purpose or my ‘why,’ ’’ said Lehane, a longtime employee of Dell Technologies in Hopkinton. “Within 10 minutes of asking, they responded and said yes. We’ve been off and running ever since.”

Lehane’s journey will start in Antarctica Jan. 31. A cargo plane is set to fly her and the other participants from Cape Town, South Africa, to Antarctica for the first 26.2-mile run. After they finish, the same plane will fly them back to Cape Town, where they will run the second race the next day. After that, it’s a private plane to Perth, Australia, then onto Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the Spanish capital of Madrid, Fortaleza in Brazil, and back to the United States for a final race in Miami.

“too thin a connection.” But it would prevent including properties along A Street that would be more likely to be developed.

“I think the minimal change is going to be the easiest to sell,” said Matthew Wronka, the Planning Board’s ZAC liaison and vice chair.

This would apply to both the Planning Board and Town Meeting, he noted.

There also is “a clear explanation” for this decision.

“People don’t want more development,” added fellow Planning Board member Elyse Mihajloski. “I think it would have the most minimal impact in the short term, at least.”

Patel said a draft proposal could be submitted to the state for review. Once the review is completed, the Planning Board can evaluate its options.

Lehane said. “You land, you get on a bus, you get transported to the site of the race, and then you’re back on the plane again.”

Lehane has been working with a coach, Carmela Tavares of Sole Sisters Running Club, along with Dr. Mark Messinger of Messinger Chiropractic and Tracy Moynihan of Choice Fitness — all of whom are expected to cheer her on at the Miami race — and the goal has been to get used to doing long runs with very little rest. It’s a challenge, even for someone who is an accomplished and annual runner of the Boston Marathon.

“It’s more miles than I have ever done,” she said. “It’s really about paying attention to your heart rate, that’s what truly helps you recover. I have to slow my pace down to bring my heart rate down.”

Some training days for Lehane have included running 10 miles in the morning and 10 more at night. Other times, she will wake up at 3 a.m. to run 15 miles ahead of a quick 5-miler later in the day.

At the peak of her training, Lehane was running upward of 80 miles per week. It’s a lot, but well short of the 183.4 miles she’ll cover during race week. By the time she laces up in Antarctica, Lehane will have logged more than 2,000 miles over the past year. However, she said she is most nervous about the fundraising.

“I have committed to raising $100,000 for the Respite Center, and I am happy to do it,” said Lehane, who through mid-December had raised about $37,000 through her fundraising page (givengain.com/project/sandra-raisingfunds-for-michael-lisnow-respite-center-103175). “I am their biggest advocate, cheerleader, champion, and once we get to that goal it will be a big sigh of relief.”

As for the race itself, Antarctica presents the most unknowns, but training in the cold weather in November and December has been helpful for Lehane. She also had the chance to train in an indoor climate chamber to simulate the different temperatures she is likely to encounter as she makes her way around the globe.

As for her father, the one whose words sparked this years-long obsession, Lehane said he and her mother probably are a little nervous. But her family is proud and excited, including her two sons who are both in their 20s.

“They think it’s the coolest thing,” Lehane said. “Their old mom is still doing this.”

At the Dec. 16 Elementary School Building Committee meeting, Chris Eberly, Vertex project manager, explained that DPW director Kerry Reed requested there be a full-time person to observe road work in response to concerns like soil getting on the street and “other things I think are known issues.”

Eberly acknowledged, “We’ll be interrupting a significant number of residents of Hopkinton” with the street work.

Eberly said typically Hopkinton has a resident engineer who oversees all street projects. However, because there are so many projects going on at the same time, town staff is unavailable.

As a result, Eberly said, the intent is to seek a civil engineer “consistent with policies the town has with street improvements” to ensure the work is being done “the way it should.”

Member Mike Shepard said he was not comfortable hiring a consultant “from the outfit that designed it.”

“You are better off hiring [someone] not affiliated with the design of the roadwork or who oversees the roadwork for the downtown road project,” Shepard said. “Given the magnitude and importance, it should actually go out to bid.”

Eberly told the board about two options. One would involve putting together a request for proposals (RFP) similar to the one existing with Tighe and Bond, that came about at the Planning Board’s request.

The other would be to “think about this as enhanced construction administration.” That would involve an engineer familiar with the documents who understands the intent of the work and makes sure it is carried out consistently every day.

“Both scenarios are valid,” Eberly added.

Chair Jon Graziano noted, “Given the nature of the work and what is being asked here … I feel like a third party would provide better oversight.”

The ESBC gave Vertex its “direction by consensus” to put together a procurement package and find a provider for the oversight services.

Eberly said he would bring back options from “resume and cost standpoints,” and noted the project has about six months before the road work begins.

He told the board there may be minor costs involved because it was not originally something Vertex intended to pursue.

In other business, the committee heard an update from Chris Kenney, Vertex project manager, who said the work is slightly ahead of schedule with some activities, the foundation and structural steel permit was obtained, and the excavation for stormwater detention was finished.

In a budget overview, Kenney noted the following: architect (Perkins Eastman) at $8.6 million (or 71% of its contract value), Vertex at $1.5 million (33%) and construction billings (Brait Builders) at approximately $17 million (16.6%).

Startup costs for construction/roadway is at $1.4 million (2.1%).

The total budget cost is $158,422,394. Expenditures to date total $27,895,215 (23%).

Schools School Committee outlines proposed $71.8 million budget

public hearing about the proposed fiscal year 2027 budget of $71,836,488 highlighted the Jan. 8 School Committee meeting.

Superintendent Evan Bishop noted the budget was built “thoughtfully, with as much transparency as possible.” He said its main drivers include enrollment, meeting needs, transportation, contractual obligations and special education compliance.

The special education reserve fund and payroll software costs were moved into the school budget for FY 27 from the town budget and amount to $1.7% of the total, Bishop said.

Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Susan Rothermich broke down the budget, which shows an increase from FY 26 of 5.84% ($3,966,833).

Salaries increased by $3.1 million, with a total hike of $3,669,277 when requests for new personnel totaling 7.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions at a cost of $535,762 are factored in.

The requested positions include a special education intensive teacher at Hopkins School, a related arts teacher at the middle school, a reading interventionist at the middle school, a 0.5 FTE English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) teacher for pre-K and kindergarten at Marathon School, an assistant principal at the high school and a custodian at Elmwood School (then Charleswood School in the future).

The district also is requesting a stipend ($14,889) to host a co-op team for the gymnastics program at the high school. That expense as well as funding for paraprofessionals at the middle school and Marathon School previously

were approved by the School Committee.

Select Board member Matt Kizner said he was concerned to hear about a 20% to 30% increase in disciplinary referrals, one of the reasons another assistant principal is requested for the high school. This would be to lower the caseload of students handled per principal.

He said, “Some of this is home, town, community [responsibility]” and asked how the Select Board could partner with the School Committee to address this issue.

Bishop noted there is a lot of conversation around social/emotional learning, and it is an important focus and investment. A task force is working on strategies such as “restorative practices” to address the “concerning number” of infractions.

The School Committee will vote to adopt the budget at its Jan. 22 meeting.

Capital plan outlined Rothermich also spoke about capital expenditures anticipated for the next several years. In FY 27, the items include $150,000 for district technology upgrades, $216,450 for classroom equipment and furniture and $95,000 for a buildings and grounds equipment/ vehicle.

The FY 28 requests total $1.6 million and would include funds for classroom equipment/furniture ($238,250), building and grounds vehicle ($65,000), technology upgrades ($150,000), hallway flooring/athletic center track ($300,000) and kitchen/cafeteria/server ($880,000).

Looking to FY 29, Rothermich noted roofs at the middle and high school must be partially replaced ($4,447,500) when solar panels are removed (after 20 years).

Stephenson details battle with cancer

t the Jan. 8 School Committee meeting, vice chair Susan Stephenson responded to public concern regarding her meeting attendance and remote participation in recent months.

Stephenson, who attended the meeting in person, explained that she has been undergoing treatment for two types of cancer since late summer/early fall. She noted that a recent PET scan from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute indicated her cancers are “virtually gone.”

However, Stephenson said she potentially faces a “gruesome surgery” on her esophagus, which may force her to resign from the committee in the future.

“Hopefully, that will explain to the concerned citizens Hopkinton why I have not been here in person for the past few months,” she said.

committee members and district administrators for maintaining confidentiality at her request, adding, “That speaks volumes about their personal and professional values.”

School Committee chair Kyla McSweeney said she values all members of the committee, saying they bring “unique perspectives.” Stephenson, she noted, has insights as a former classroom teacher and has been in constant contact with her throughout her illness, “including texting me from the hospital.”

She also has been participating in School Committee matters and as its liaison “not in public view.”

Member Nancy Cavanaugh echoed that Stephenson did not miss a meeting during an “obviously difficult time in [her] life personally.” She urged community members having questions and concerns about any members to communicate directly with them via the district’s website.

sked to describe his team this winter, Hopkinton High School boys basketball coach Tom Keane simply replied “very, very young.”

The Hillers started the season with only a couple of players returning from last year’s squad.

“We are kind of starting over,”

Keane said. “But they are all working very hard, and they are getting better.”

Hopkinton does not have much size this year, so Keane said his team will rely on speed and quickness, both of which are strengths. And, despite the youth, the Hillers are not without experienced players. Gavin Cho has taken over as a captain this winter in his third year with the varsity.

opkinton’s Lucie Mato knew she wanted to go to Lafayette the moment she first stepped on the Pennsylvania campus, but that doesn’t mean her journey to playing Division 1 lacrosse was easy.

Mato visited Lafayette for a camp following her sophomore season last year with the Hillers, knowing that she wanted a school that combined strong athletics and academics.

“As soon as I stepped on the quad, I knew I was going to do anything to get myself there,” she said.

For Mato, Lafayette checks all of the boxes. She said she likes the coaching staff, she connected with the players during her visit, and she liked the relatively small size of the Patriot League school. But Mato received interest from multiple schools in all three divisions, and so she drove more than 8,000 miles up and down the East Coast attending camps over the summer.

“I was emailing coaches and sending my highlight reels,” Mato said. “And going from showcase to showcase and camp to camp.”

At one point last summer, Mato drove to Vermont for a camp and then went to New Hampshire for another.

After that event, she and her mother, Anne, drove straight to Maryland for a tournament before turning around and heading up to New York, where her dad, Shawn, was waiting.

“My parents are both very supportive of me,” Mato said. “They want me to do well and have fun.”

Along the way, Mato and her parents passed the time listening to music and podcasts.

“It was super fun,” she said. “The long road trips were crazy at times, driving for hours, but it was a good time.”

Ultimately, Mato chose Lafayette, where she likely will play on the attack when she arrives on campus in a year-

Keane said of the 6-foot-1 senior. “He is one of our taller players but also one of the better ball handlers. So he is going to have to play all over the court.”

“From there, we are looking for some of our other seniors who are getting an opportunity to play bigger roles,” the coach said.

“I play lacrosse at least three times a week, and I go to the gym twice a week,” she said. “I want to keep my conditioning up, I don’t want to stay at the same level that I am right now. I want to keep getting better so I can make an impact on the program.”

Mato also stressed the need to keep up her grades, citing the high academic standards in the Patriot League. And she is thrilled to end up at her top choice to continue her career both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field, even though the recruiting process was busy and, at times, stressful.

“There was a time where I played lacrosse for two weeks straight without much of a break,” Mato said. “But it was worth it, because I really love the sport.”

Rocco Spinelli is someone who can contribute to the scoring, with Keane describing him as an “excellent shooter.”

The lack of size also led to Keane keeping a freshman on the varsity roster for the first time in his 20-plus years at the helm, 6-foot-2 Patrick Reilly.

“He is doing a good job rebounding so far,” Keane said.

The Hillers are hoping to turn their reliance on guard play into a strength,

with Keane highlighting the need to be strong on defense.

“We are going to play fast and we are going to have to get after it and turn teams over the press,” he said.

The Hillers, who lost their first two games of the season but bounced back to win their next five, are competing in a strong Tri-Valley League.

Keane said Holliston and Westwood look particularly strong, but even the smaller schools in the TVL will be tough to reckon with this season. Still, Hopkinton is setting its sights on the postseason.

“The expectation is for us to try to improve every day,” Keane said.

“We want to keep getting better, and we would love to qualify for the state tournament.”

One of the team’s captains, Burke placed in two or three events at every meet in the first month of the season.

As the new year began, she had posted the Tri-Valley League’s best time in the 300 meters, was ranked fifth in the shot put and was tied for seventh in the high jump. “She is a fierce competitor and a dedicated leader who gives her all at practice and at meets,” coach Jean Cann stated about Burke, who also plays field hockey and lacrosse.

Tuesdays in February and March AARP Foundation tax-aide volunteers (IRS certified) will help individuals prepare and file their returns for free. While this program is focused on taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income, it is open to anyone of any age. Cody Normandin conducted a motor vehicle stop on Ash Street and subsequently arrested a 45-year-old from Oran Road in Framingham, charging him with speeding in violation of special regulation, operation of motor vehicle with license suspended, and possession of open container of alcohol in motor vehicle. The vehicle was towed.

5:11 p.m. On East Main Street, Officer Kyle Quinzani arrested a 47-year-old who lives on West Main Street in Marlborough on a charge of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

12:50 a.m. On Main Street, Officers Jennifer Manning and Aline Matos arrested a 37-year-old resident of Claflin Farm Road in Upton and charged him with marked lanes violation and OUI liquor.

12:51 a.m. Sgt. Cody Normandin conducted a motor vehicle stop on West Main Street, and Officers Matthew LaTour and Kyle Quinzani assisted. A 27-year-old who lives on Purchase Street in Milford was arrested and charged with marked lanes violation, speeding in violation of special regulation, negligent operation of motor vehicle and OUI liquor.

2:17 p.m. Officer Kyle Quinzani conducted a motor vehicle stop on West Main Street, and Officers Matthew LaTour and Alyssa Fleuette assisted. A 27-year-old from Liverpool Lane in Waltham was arrested and charged with marked lanes violation, negligent operation of motor vehicle and OUI liquor.

6:30 p.m. A caller reported a white truck struck a pole on Legacy Farms North and drove off. Sgt. Shannon Beloin and Officers Justin Cappuccio and Brian Ziniti responded and notified Eversource. The Southborough Police Department was contacted and caught up with the vehicle. A 40-year-old resident of Patricia Drive in Tyngsboro was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of property damage and OUI liquor.

2:42 a.m. A caller reported a white pickup truck parked on the side of the roadway on East Main Street with music playing loudly. Officer Aline Matos responded along with the Ashland Police Department. Officers Robert Ekross and Eva Cann assisted with field sobriety testing.

A 28-year-old from Windsor Drive in Ashland was arrested and charged with OUI liquor. A tow truck removed the vehicle.

Dec. 25

2:12 a.m. A caller reported an erratic operator on Ray Street. Officer Lucille Creedon responded, and the vehicle took off. Sgt. Cody Normandin responded and subsequently detained a 23-year-old resident of Arlington Street in Framingham. The individual was charged with failure to stop for police, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and OUI liquor.

8:11 a.m. A caller reported seeing a hunter in the woods on North Street, and he did not believe there were enough woods to legally hunt. Officer Justin Cappuccio responded and checked the area with a negative find.

12:50 p.m. A Lumber Street caller reported an unwanted person on her property. The person was advised by the current owners that he is not allowed on their property. Officer Nicholas Saletnik responded and spoke with the caller about the trespassing.

7:22 p.m. Officer Matthew LaTour responded to a motor vehicle crash involving two cars on Main Street. No personal injuries were reported.

10:22 a.m. A caller reported a male who appeared to be a solicitor and would not leave on Trailside Lane property.

Sgt. Robert Ekross responded and assisted the person with jump-starting his car, and he subsequently left the area.

1:14 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious incident of someone sending bizarre mail referring to her high school days. Officer Benjamin Vaz spoke with the reporting person and left a message for the other individual to call back. The incident was logged.

3:39 p.m. A Daniel Shays Road resident reported she received a suspicious letter in the mail from a classmate of 40 years ago. Sgt. Shannon Beloin took a report.

3:35 p.m. A Thayer Heights Road resident reported a suspicious U-Haul cargo van had been in her driveway, and a person opened her garage, picked up an Amazon package, then left. Officer Matthew LaTour responded and spoke to the person, who was an Amazon driver delivering packages.

All was OK. 4:37 p.m. A walk-in from Church Street reported People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was targeting UMass Memorial Medical School, where he is a professor.

He stated that he was on the list of professors to be targeted.

8:20 p.m. A caller reported his fellow employee on West Main Street was intoxicated and making a delivery. Sgt. Shannon Beloin, Sgt. Cody Normandin and Officer Kyle Quinzani responded and located the intoxicated person in the rear of the building. He was waiting for a ride.

8:36 p.m. A caller reported being locked inside a bathroom on West Main Street. Sgt. Shannon Beloin responded along with the Fire Department.

2:26 p.m. A caller reported a dog was hit by a car on Main Street, and it ran off. Sgt. William Burchard responded and saw the dog but was unable to get it.

6:03 p.m. A caller reported finding an abandoned firearm on Pine Island Road near the lake.

12:28 p.m. Officers Kiley Davis and Augusto Diaz responded to a motor vehicle crash on Hayden Rowe Street involving two cars and took a report.

A tow truck removed a vehicle.

5:20 p.m. A caller reported an aggressive dog always out loose on Meserve Street, and it ran at her this day. The animal control officer was notified.

8:48 a.m. A motorist reported an aggressive driver on South Street. The caller got into a verbal dispute with him while on the phone at a set of lights.

Officer Nicholas Saletnik responded and reported both parties potentially were driving aggressively.

8:03 p.m. A West Main Street caller reported he believed someone attempted to enter his house about 15 minutes earlier. Officer Justin Cappuccio responded. The caller called back and reported it was his cousin trying to get in the house. All was OK.

The caller called back and stated the vehicle backed into her neighbor’s driveway. Sgt. Cody Normandin responded and reported the vehicle was for an airport pickup. All was OK. 8:29 a.m. A Mayhew Street resident reported her vehicle was stolen. Officer Noah Buentello responded and reported the vehicle was not stolen, but there was a dispute between the two owners of the vehicle. A report was taken.

4:46 p.m. Sgt. Shannon Beloin notified the DPW of a fallen tree on Saddle Hill Road and placed cones around it.

Dec. 26

12:57 a.m. The Milford Police Department requested officers to check on the registered owner of an abandoned vehicle found crashed into a tree in Milford. The male driver was last seen running up Route 85. Sgt. Cody Normandin and Officer Aline Matos went to a Price Street address, but nobody answered the door. The driver subsequently was located at Garrett’s market/gas station on Cedar Street in Milford. A report was taken.

12:42 p.m. A West Main Street caller reported her mailbox was smashed. Officer Eva Cann responded and took a report of vandalism.

1:55 p.m. A Westcott Drive resident reported his mailbox and post were damaged by a vehicle in the past few days. Officer Eva Cann viewed the damage and took a report.

8:39 p.m. Multiple officers responded to a motor vehicle accident on Cedar Street. Personal injuries were reported.

10:50 p.m. Officers Nicholas Walker and Lucille Creedon assisted a vehicle stuck in the snow on West Main Street and moved it out of the road.

12:10 a.m. A caller complained of a vehicle spinning in circles in the parking lot of Carbone’s on Cedar Street and then driving erratically on Cedar Street headed south. Officer Justin Cappuccio responded, and the vehicle was gone upon his arrival.

2:23 a.m. The Upton Police Department reported a vehicle was stuck in the snow on School Street. Officer Lucille Creedon responded, and the vehicle was gone upon her arrival.

3:12 a.m. Officer Eva Cann reported a winter parking ban violation on Hilltop Road. She was unable to locate the owner. A tow truck was requested to remove the vehicle.

3:15 a.m. The DPW requested the removal of three vehicles on Walcott Street for snow removal.

Officers Robert Ekross and Alyssa Fleuette responded and requested a tow truck to remove an Acura and a Ford pickup truck.

4:18 a.m. The DPW requested the removal of a grey BMW on Maria Lane for snow removal. Officers Robert Elross and Alyssa Fleuette responded and contacted a tow truck.

5:57 a.m. The DPW requested the removal of a vehicle on Robbern Road for snow removal. Officer Eva Cann was able to make contact with the owners, who moved the vehicle.

7:31 a.m. The DPW requested the removal of a black sedan on Canterbury Lane for snow removal.

Officer Lucille Creedon responded and made contact with the owner, who moved the car.

7:34 a.m. A Wood Street caller reported a plow truck knocked over her recycling bin, and everything went into the street. She wanted to know who was plowing. The incident was logged, and she was told she could call the DPW during business hours.

8:31 a.m. A walk-in reported he was being cyber-stalked. He contacted police in Florida, and he was advised to report the incident to Hopkinton Police. Officer Noah Buentello spoke with the caller about the harassment.

11:50 a.m. A Wood Street caller reported her mother passed away recently, and she wanted to gather her mother’s personal belongings from her room. The caller’s brother stated he would call the police if she attempted to gather the belongings.

12:00 p.m. A motorist reported the traffic lights at South Street and West Main Street as well as School Street and West Main Street were not working. Sgt. Arthur Schofield and Officer Augusto Diaz responded, reported a power outage and notified Eversource.

The DPW put out stop signs until power was restored.

1:21 p.m. A caller reported she used to live at a Redwood Path address, and a package was delivered in error for her to her old address. The current resident threw out the package. The caller was advised that it was not a police matter, and the incident was logged.

6:20 p.m. A caller reported a wire hanging at Pinecrest Village. Officer Brian Ziniti responded and notified Eversource.

6:51 p.m. Officer Sean McKeon notified the DPW of a fallen tree on East Main Street.

Dec. 30

7:58 a.m. Sgt. Arthur Schofield checked on a vehicle in the middle of the roadway on Main Street with its hazard lights on. The vehicle was disabled, and the driver was to move it when able.

10:08 a.m. A motorist reported a vehicle was tailgating him on Cedar Street. Officer Noah Buentello checked the area with a negative find and notified the Southborough Police Department.

2:05 p.m. A caller requested an officer to check on a person trying to flag down vehicles on West Main Street.

7:54 p.m. A caller complained of a loud party on Bracing Run. Officer Justin Cappuccio responded and spoke with the homeowner, who turned down the music.

8:42 p.m. A caller reported a hitand-run motor vehicle accident on Fruit Street. A red Prius, likely with damage to the front passenger side, fled toward Westborough. Officers Justin Cappuccio and Matthew LaTour responded and notified the Westborough Police Department.

1:23 a.m. Sgt. Cody Normandin checked on a vehicle on the side of the roadway on West Main Street and spoke with an Uber driver, who had pulled over for a sick passenger. The passenger subsequently was picked up by someone else.

2:59 a.m. Officers Jennifer Manning and Alyssa Fleuette responded to a motor vehicle crash on West Elm Street and issued a citation to the female operator.

She was provided with a courtesy transport to Alltown on West Main Street.

7:28 a.m. A caller reported a vehicle with its hazards on in a hazardous spot on Cedar Street. Officer Justin Cappuccio responded and reported a tow was en route.

11:24 a.m. A caller reported vandalism in the lobby of a Main Street building, where food trash was left behind.

Officer Benjamin Vaz spoke with the involved party, who made amends and cleaned up all the trash.

11:25 a.m. A caller reported a vehicle struck a pole on Clydesdale Lane.

5:12 p.m. A Granite Street caller reported finding a black Lab puppy.

She took it to her house. The incident was logged.

7:23 p.m. A Lumber Street resident reported she returned from a trip and found her mailbox was knocked over.

11:31 p.m. Officer Eva Cann assisted a disabled motor vehicle with no power on West Main Street. A tow truck was en route.

10:26 a.m. Officer Matthew LaTour reported traffic lights blinking on West Main Street. The DPW responded and attempted to fix them. Mass DOT was notified.

2:20 p.m. A walk-in from Whitman Lane reported possible package theft or an undelivered package. Officer Augusto Diaz assisted and took a report.

4:56 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious male in a mask playing loud music on Hayden Rowe Street. Officers Sean McKeon and Brian Ziniti responded, and the individual was gone upon their arrival. Officers received a name from students on the scene, and it was passed on to School Resource Officer Matthew Santoro.

6:21 p.m. Officer Sean McKeon reported the same masked individual from earlier on Hayden Rowe Street.

Officer Brian Ziniti spoke with the individual and advised him to stop. A

2:33 p.m. Officer Nicholas Saletnik took a report of a stolen license plate on Rice Street.

4:49 p.m. A motorist on East Main street reported a road rage incident that originated in Ashland between the caller and the operator of a black Tahoe, who threatened him. The operator of the Tahoe also reported the incident to the Ashland Police Department. Officers Justin Cappuccio and Sean McKeon checked the area, and the vehicle was gone upon their arrival.

5:31 p.m. A motorist reported he struck a deer but was unsure if it was in Holliston or on Ash Street in Hopkinton.

Officer Justin Cappuccio responded and reported damage to the front end of the car. The deer was not located. AAA responded to tow the vehicle.

5:48 p.m. An Ash Street caller reported an Amazon vehicle hit his mailbox. Officer Sean McKeon responded and took a report.

11:57 a.m. A walk-in from Elm Street requested to speak with an officer about someone lighting her cat on fire.

Officer Nicholas Saletnik assisted and took a report.

4:00 p.m. A Sterling Drive resident reported suspicious footprints around the outside of the house and a possible broken door. Officer Justin Cappuccio responded and spoke with the reporting person. He later learned that the Fire Department responded there two days prior for an alarm activation and needed to make entry. Officer Brian Ziniti notified the homeowner.

8:44 p.m. A Downey Street resident reported a vehicle was parked in front of her house earlier in the day, and she noticed via camera footage a person in her driveway with a flashlight. Officer Sean McKeon responded, checked the neighborhood and took a report. The reporting person requested additional police checks overnight.

9:43 p.m. A Lyft driver reported he drove a male customer home on Wood Street, but he did not receive payment.

Officer Brian Ziniti responded, and the driver was advised to handle the issue with his employer.

8:21 a.m. A caller reported her dog got loose, and his collar showed that he was near the condos on Nazneen Circle.

Officers Nicholas Walker and Noah Buentello checked the area with a negative find but stayed nearby in case of an updated location or sighting.

4:01 p.m. A walk-in reported that over the past few weeks while out walking his dog, he had gotten into verbal arguments with a male on Pleasant Street.

He was advised to call when it occurs.

5:38 p.m. A motorist reported a red pickup truck was broken down at the West Main Street intersection. Officer Justin Cappuccio responded and reported the vehicle ran out of gas. A tow truck responded.

9:07 p.m. A Granite Street caller reported he saw via his security camera a suspicious male walking in his yard, and when the motion light in the driveway activated, the male took off. Officers Matthew LaTour and Kyle Quinzani responded and checked the area with a negative find.

HPD charges 19-year-old with animal cruelty

he Hopkinton Police Department announced Jan. 7 that it had charged an individual with animal cruelty following an incident that occurred in town three days earlier.

According to a press release, Hopkinton Police received a report on Jan. 4 that an individual allegedly attempted to set a cat on fire at a home on Elm Street.

“Officers conducted an investigation, which included reviewing video evidence related to the incident,” the press

Following the initial investigation, officers charged 19-year-old Christopher Murphy of Plainville with cruelty to animals. He was summoned to appear in Framingham District Court at a later date.

Cruelty to animals, as defined in Massachusetts General Law, is punishable with imprisonment of up to 7 years in state prison, 2 1/2 years in the house of corrections or a fine of up to $5,000 for first offenses. Subsequent offenses incur more severe punishments.

The incident remained under investigation.

5:15 p.m. A walk-in reported losing a Samsung Galaxy phone while horseback riding on the trails on Wood Street.

The incident was logged.

6:46 p.m. A Woodview Way caller reported threats and harassment. Officer Brian Ziniti assisted and took a report.

9:44 p.m. Sgt. Cody Normandin and Officer Kyle Quinzani responded to a motor vehicle accident on Pond Street where a vehicle went off the roadway and into a tree. No personal injuries were reported. A tow truck removed the vehicle.

Mary Ellen Kenney Mary Ellen Kenney (O’Toole), 81, passed peacefully on Dec. 14 at Metrowest Medical Center in Framingham following a brief illness.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Hannigan) O’Toole. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Robert J. Kenney, in 2023.

Mary Ellen was a 1962 graduate of Framingham High School. Following her marriage to Bob, she established a successful career in real estate and then became a contractor and built homes until her retirement.

A longtime Hopkinton resident, Mary Ellen is survived by her two sons, Sean and Patrick, a grandson, Tyler, two great-granddaughters, Maggie and Riley, her sister, Catherine Brown (Donald), and seven nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her brother, Michael O’Toole, and her daughter, Karen Kenney.

The funeral was held Dec. 19 from the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home. A Mass was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Parish, and it was followed by burial in St. John’s Cemetery.

Marion Merchant Marion I. (Montville) Merchant, 97, beloved wife of the late Donald F. Merc h a n t S r. , p a s s e d away peacefully in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Dec. 11. Born in Millbury and raised in Hopkinton, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Celia (Reil) Montville.

Soon after graduating from Hopkinton High School, she met and married her future husband, Donald F. Merchant. Together they settled in Northborough, where they raised their family. Marion enjoyed being a homemaker and mother to their eight children.

After raising her family, she spent the next 30 years in Brooksville, Florida. She was very active and enjoyed line dancing several times a week with her friends. Marion was very adventurous and loved to travel to faraway lands including China, Alaska and Europe, but her favorite destination was always Pine Island, Florida. In her later years, she often could be found coloring on her iPad or finishing a puzzle or two.

She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her children, Mary

Mary Lauzon Mary M. (Hally) Lauzon, a dedicated advocate for children and a respected educator, passed away on Jan. 4, surrounded by her loving family. A resident of Hopkinton for 33 years, Mary moved to Windermere, Florida, following her retirement to begin a vibrant new chapter of her life.

Mary was the beloved daughter of the late John E. and Mary T. (Ward) Hally, and the sister of the late John M. Hally. She shared a wonderful life with her husband, John M. Lauzon, to whom she was married for more than 50 years. Together, they built a foundation of love and faith that extended through generations. Mary was the devoted mother of Mary M. Corredor and the loving “Grammy” of Ana-Lucia Corredor, who was a source of immense pride and joy. Her family circle was filled with deep affection; she was the dear sister-in-law of Susan and John Frost and the cherished aunt of Jessica (Frost) Castro, Christopher Frost, Kathleen Hally and the late John E. Hally. She also was the proud greataunt of Philip Castro.

Mary’s professional career spanned over 35 years, during which she became a leading voice in special education law and compliance. After earning her B.A. cum laude from Framingham State University and her masters in education from Boston University, she began her journey as a teacher at the Boston School for the Deaf in Randolph. Following her marriage, she served as a speech and language clinician and eventually rose to become the assistant administrator of special education for the Natick Public Schools.

Her leadership skills further propelled her into vital administrative roles, notably serving as the administrator of special education and support services for Plainville Public Schools. Mary was renowned for her active mentorship, her development of essential preschool programs and her unwavering commitment to ensuring every student received the support necessary for success. In her later years, she served as a special education complaint investigator for the New Hampshire Department of Education, where she ensured fairness and integrity within school systems.

Beyond her professional life, Mary

possessed a spirit of service and a love for her community. From 2009-20, Mary was a proud cast member of Walt Disney World, embracing the opportunity to bring smiles to visitors from around the world. Beginning in 2008, she volunteered at Give Kids the World Village as a welcoming presence at the airport while greeting families arriving for their “wish” vacations.

Mary possessed the rare combination of an analytical mind and the soft heart of a caregiver. She believed in facts and evidence, but she believed in people more. Her legacy lives on in the thousands of lives she touched through her work, her volunteerism and her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Acting Out Theater Company (actingouttheater.com), 60 Island Street, Lawrence, MA 01840 to honor Mary’s devotion to the place where her beloved Ana-Lucia first stepped onto the stage. Grammy was part of the Acting Out family and was happiest when sitting in the audience watching her granddaughter do what she loved.

A funeral Mass and celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

Robert Manchester Robert E. Manchester, 93, of Milford and a former longtime resident of Hopkinton, passed away on Jan. 4. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Arvilla (Reynolds) and Charles Manchester. He was the husband of 50 years to the late Penny (DeMello) Manchester.

Bob was the last living of nine children. He proudly served three years in the Navy Reserves, followed by four years of active duty in the United States Air Force. He spent 10 years with Hughes Aircraft Company as a technical instructor, traveling to military bases across the country. He later worked for 10 years at Water Associates in Framingham and Milford as a facilities coordinator and supervisor.

Bob then dedicated 27 years to Kidde Fenwal in Ashland as a facilities and property supervisor, retiring at age 72. He continued working another 15 years as a property manager on behalf of the owners of the property where Kidde Fenwal operates, fully retiring at age 88.

Bob and Penny moved to Hopkinton almost 60 years ago to raise their family. He coached Little League for his sons’ teams and loved spending time with his family, whether building snow forts, setting up a backyard ice rink, showing them all how to properly mow the lawn, pouring concrete slabs, building an addition to the house or simply catching up. He especially cherished time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and rarely missed their activities, including sporting events, recitals, school presentations, races and graduations.

visiting Dawn in Northern Virginia and spending time in Prince Edward Island with Michele, Eric and their family. Bob also enjoyed antiquing and collecting coins and ‘K’ dollars, often involving family members in his searches.

Bob is survived by his children, Kathy McLaughlin of South Grafton, Dawn Manchester of Milford, Michele (Eric) Hubley of Northboro, Kevin Manchester of Hopkinton and Keith (Deb) Manchester of Norton. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Eric Hubley II, Robert Manchester, Samantha (Michael) Hubley Scola, Alexis Manchester, Madelyn Manchester and Connor Manchester, as well as greatgrandchildren William Manchester, Clayton Hubley and Chase Hubley.

In addition to his eight siblings and parents, he is predeceased by granddaughter Jenn McLaughlin.

Burial with full military honors was held Jan. 8 at Saint John’s Cemetery, Hopkinton. Roy Tiziani Roy P. Tiziani, 82, of Hopkinton passed away Jan. 4 after a period of declining health.

Born in Framingham to the late Cesare and Mary (Tognacci) Tiziani, Roy graduated in 1961 from Framingham High School, where he played football and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. He spent his career as a service manager in car dealerships and most recently worked at Adesa Boston until retiring in 2024.

Roy was known for his firm handshake, sharp humor and tough-love approach. If he teased you, it meant he cared. Beneath that exterior was a deeply loyal man who would do anything for the people he loved.

One of his greatest joys was taking “Tizi Tours” with his wife, Mary — spontaneous drives through New England where the destination mattered far less than the time together. Though not one for emotional speeches, Roy took quiet pride in his children, Lisa and Michael, his stepdaughters, Kristine and Andrea, and his grandchildren, following their lives with devoted attention.

Roy is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary (LaCroix) Tiziani; his children, Lisa Tiziani and Michael Tiziani; his stepdaughters, Kristine Cunningham and husband Raymond of Andover, and Andrea Idelson and husband Joel of Framingham; and his five beloved grandchildren, Jake and Mora Cunningham, and Riley, Joseph and Grady Idelson.

Mary Scott-Everett Mary Ruth “Cookie” Scott Everett, age 81, passed peacefully on Dec. 20 surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. She left this world just as she lived in it — held close by those she cherished most.

Mary was the beloved mother of her son, Dale M. Desmond of Hopkinton; her daughters, Carlena “Nina” Grinder and husband Stephen of Douglas, and Veronica Ivy Murtagh and husband Christopher of Truro.

She was a devoted and deeply proud grandmother to Edward Marcus Hayes, Dylan Joseph Hayes, Brittany Mary Furlong and husband Teddy, Brandon Michael Hayes, and Samantha Huguette Faucher. One of life’s most tender moments came when Mary’s first and only great-grandchild, Lucas Edward Furlong, was born just one day after her passing — a bittersweet blessing she would have embraced with immeasurable love.

Born on Aug. 27, 1944, and raised in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Mary was one of 14 children born to Wilfred Scott and Rosa N. (Myrick) Scott, both of whom predeceased her.

She also was predeceased by siblings Wilfred, Robert, Rosemary, Raymond, Winifred, James, Grace, Elizabeth, Lawrence and Roger. She is survived by brothers Richard Scott, David Scott and Bradley Scott, along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who brought her great joy and affection throughout her life.

From an early age, Mary’s creativity shone

brightly. As a young woman, she worked as a fashion designer, sewing and producing fashion shows throughout the Springfield area. Later, she made her home in Hopkinton, where she devoted herself to raising her family and creating a warm, welcoming home — one that became the backdrop for countless gatherings filled with laughter, good food and lasting memories. Friends and family alike remember her home as a place where everyone felt welcome.

In 1985, Mary married the love of her life, Ronald Everett. Their marriage was marked by deep love, joy and partnership, lasting 20 beautiful years until Ronnie’s passing in 2005. While raising her family, Mary also returned to school, fulfilling a lifelong dream by earning a degree in media and communications from Worcester State University in 1987 — an accomplishment she spoke of with great pride. She later earned her real estate license and worked for several years as a realtor.

Mary will be remembered for her warmth, loyalty and unwavering optimism. She loved music in all its forms, had a deep appreciation for history and was known as an exceptional cook. Her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor made people feel instantly at ease, and her laughter was a gift to those around her. She treasured time spent with friends and family and had a special passion for antiquing, delighting in finding beauty and meaning in unexpected places.

Above all else, Mary’s greatest joy was her family — especially her grandchildren, of whom she was endlessly proud. Her love for them was deep, constant and unconditional, and it was returned to her many times over.

Mary leaves behind a space that can never truly be filled, but also a legacy of love, resilience, creativity and kindness that will live on through all who knew her. She is deeply missed and forever lovingly remembered.

A church service was held Jan. 10 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Framingham, followed by a celebration of Mary’s life at the Woodville Rod & Gun Club, Hopkinton.

A private burial was planned for the National Cemetery in Bourne, where Mary was to be laid to rest beside the love of her life, Ronald.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a 529 plan established in Mary’s name for her greatgrandson, Lucas Edward Furlong.

Edward Kennedy Edward “Ed” William Kennedy of Northbridge and formerly Hopkinton, a loving husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Jan. 1 in Worcester. He was 82.

Ed was born Nov. 27, 1943, in Framingham. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Brenda Kennedy (Witkowski); his three wonderful children along with their spouses, Lauren and Shannon Jacobs, Colleen and Gary Jewers, and Adam and Heather Kennedy; his six grandchildren, Rachel Sears (and husband Nick), Devyn O’Loughlin (and husband Tom), Nate Jewers (and significant other Emily LaHair), Brendan Kennedy, Declan Kennedy and Caleb Kennedy; and his great-granddaughter, Isla O’Loughlin.

He also leaves his sister, Janet Parks; sisters-in-law, Lynda Chysna and Elizabeth Witkowski; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ed was predeceased by his father, Frederick W. “Doc” Kennedy; his mother, Marjorie Kennedy (Benner); big sister, Anne Fairbanks (Kennedy); and brother-in-law/best friend, Robert “Bob” Chysna.

Ed had never met a stranger; he was always willing to chat with anyone he met. He loved reminiscing about his old motorcycle days, sharing his wisdom about fixing cars, and playing pitch with anyone willing to face him. He was a huge animal lover, especially his dogs and horses, a trait he certainly passed along to his family. He also liked fishing, hunting and his gun collection. At his core, Ed was a family man, something incredibly evident as his family gathered around him in his final days.

26.2 Foundation gets grant for trail rehab

T

he 26.2 Foundation announced Jan. 8 that it was selected to receive a grant for enhancing community trails at its property on East Main Street.

In a press release, the foundation reported that it was awarded a $12,000 grant from Athletic Brewing Company as part of the brewery’s “Two for the Trails” grant program. Athletic Brewing awards over $2 million in grants annually to protect and restore outdoor spaces.

With the grant in hand, the 26.2 Foundation plans to partner with the Trails Committee to rehabilitate two miles of trail that will reside near the future International Marathon Center (IMC).

“The grant itself is allowing us to develop the trails on the IMC property specifically,” Kim Chisholm, the foundation’s executive director of development and institutional advancement, clarified. “We’re super excited about it.”

Chisholm explained that the trail rehabilitation project, which will begin sometime this spring, will enhance the existing trails on the property, create different hiking options for users and connect to the

broader network of trails in town. She added that some initial clearing already has begun, and the Trails Club planned a walk there on Jan. 10.

The $12,000 is slated to pay for equipment and signage. Chisholm said all the work planned for the spring “will really enhance the existing trails that are there.”

The grant award comes as the 26.2 Foundation is deep into its capital campaign for its marathon center. President Tim Kilduff said the foundation is meeting with “major investors” and making progress on funding with the hopes of ramping up in the next few months. He anticipated that the IMC’s due diligence committee will start the permitting process with the town over the next month.

“Once we start this process, this has got to move,” said Kilduff. “The pace of all of this is going to pick up this month across the board, in every phase of the project.”

He added that the landscape of the property — 19 acres of what Kilduff called “an old bog” that sits on East Main Street just before Weston Nurseries and the Spirit of the Marathon Statue — is a factor the due diligence committee will need to consider moving forward.
