SHREWSBURY | 2 Westborough’s airport thrived for nearly a half-century
SHREWSBURY – A monthslong battle between Market Basket and a proposed gas station across Route 20 has been decided. On Dec. 21, the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) upheld the Planning Board’s decision to approve plans for the gas station; Market Basket had appealed the decision in November. “It is clear that the applicant had sufficient information for the Planning Board to make its decision. Steve Stone’s career has been all about motorcycles.
By Shealagh Sullivan Reporter NORTHBOROUGH – It’s a storied-yetunassuming shop, brimming with custom motorcycles, countless parts, and photos galore. The decor chronicles the owner’s half-century journey as American motorcycle culture evolved. In Stone’s Custom Motorcycles, Northborough’s Main Street has a place known locally, regionally, and nationally. And the man who created it all? He’s ready for someone to carry on his legacy. Steve Stone opened Stone’s Custom Motorcycles in the mid-1970s. Fifty-six years later, he’s looking to sell his business and settle down for retirement. “I’ve had a good run,” Stone said.
The stories behind the bikes are as varied as the designs themselves. Shortly after the shop first opened, Stone built a bike for a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. On another project, he worked with copper made by Revere Copper Company, founded by Paul Revere. Another one of Stone’s bikes represented the United States at the 2003 Essex Motor Sports Show in Germany, one of the most prestigious motorcyclebuilding competitions in the world. Stone’s bike didn’t just compete — it took home the top prize. The sleek red motorcycle is now proudly displayed in his shop, along with the trophy it won. From the motor to the headlights, everything was designed by Stone.
