In November 2024, I was one of millions of Americans watching the unfolding election in shock, unable to fathom what the other side could possibly be thinking. Whether it’s Democrats or Republicans, Labour or Tories, Arsenal or Tottenham, it feels like we’ve never been more divided, more dissimilar, and less able to relate to those unlike ourselves. In this age of polarisation, the office has never been more important.
Think about the office like a football pitch. It’s a home field, a gathering place for people to come together and connect with one another — a human connection that we desperately need. Vivek Murthy, the US Surgeon General, identified the devastating impacts of loneliness and social isolation on our health, calling human connection “a source of healing hiding in plain sight.” And while we can form connections virtually, for many people, the strongest relationships are those rooted in face-to-face interactions. Chris Tussell wrote that “face-toface interaction with others is closely correlated with trust and quality of relationship formation,” and indeed, Gensler’s Global Workplace Survey showed that people working in high-performing offices were more than twice as likely to have positive relationships with their colleagues. While algorithms recommend connections that are similar to

ourselves, human connections formed in the office and on the football pitch are more likely to cross boundaries of generations, abilities, and ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. In fact, for 77% of respondents to our survey, the workplace was where they formed friendships with people of other races and ethnicities, and where 88% formed friendships with people of other ages.
And then, for all those very dissimilar players to learn to navigate their differences and work as a team, they must argue with one other. This constructive disagreement may not come naturally to most of us, but it is critical to team formation and cohesion. According to Adam Grant, “Task conflict has been linked to higher creativity and smarter choices. When teams experience moderate task conflict, they generate more ideas... innovate more... and make better decisions.” Or as Leonard & Straus put it, “If you want an innovative organisation, you need to hire, work with, and promote people who make you uncomfortable.”
In a world in which our friends, neighbours, and acquaintances all went to the same schools, vote for the same people, and support the same teams—a world in which all the media we consume is pre-programmed to be agreeable to us — the workplace may be the last place in our society where we form relationships with
people unlike ourselves. In this hyper-polarised world, perhaps the ability to disagree constructively and grow stronger as a result — a skill we learn in the workplace — is what we need to heal.

Memories come in all shapes and sizes. They also tend to live along a spectrum. On the positive end of that spectrum are memories that take root because of exceptional, unique moments in our lives - experiences that dazzled us unexpectedly; that made such an impact, they’re almost impossible to forget. In the best of cases they keep us coming back for more, but first let us start with the basics.
We’ve all known about the need for ‘authenticity’ in design, and a ‘contextual’ approach to the way we design and construct hospitality focused spaces, but what we need to focus on is how design can help foster an authenticity of experience.
To begin with, let's pause on the aesthetics. Let's ask the tough questions related to how the space fundamentality operates and serves not just the guest but the host. How can we create a framework that forms the perfect balance between seamless operational efficiency and design that inspires surprise and delight?
How can we create a space that gives the guest (and host) a true opportunity to interact in a unique and compelling way. But, fundamentally, we want first to create a space that operates seamlessly, as without this design is irrelevant, and without a space that serves both host and guest equally we risk an imbalance in guest experience. From here we can build, layer, and create the rich spatial experience that stays with us and has a consistent thread that creates staying power, creating a memory or even in some cases a tribe of hospitality devoted followers.
As designers of hospitality spaces, this is where we focus our attention. Over the years, we’ve asked ourselves the above questions. What we found is that human hospitality needs are universal and timeless, they are wired
into our very DNA, informing our decision-making, and shaping our reactions to the world around us. They are few, finite, and classifiable, and have remained constant throughout history and human culture. And they are surprisingly simple.
office, residential, etc. Because it is based on core human needs, the applications are endless.
How can we create a space that gives the guest (and host) a true opportunity to interact in a unique and compelling way.
By understanding and fulfilling these fundamental human needs, brands and businesses can resonate with consumers on a profound level, resulting in a strategic approach that maintains relevance and longevity. We call this approach Hospitable Thinking™ (HT), integrating timeless core truths, behavioral sciences, and environmental psychology to maximize hospitality experiences. It’s founded upon these four core human need states: Security, Surprise, Significance, and Synergy. Focusing on these four need states as designers and advisors, we have the power to create truly memorable experiences with the potential to last a lifetime. In establishing a place that immediately feels inviting and genuine (Security), we can then find myriad ways to strike guests with wonder or amazement (Surprise), make them feel important (Significance), and create a sense of belonging and meaningful connection (Synergy).
But perhaps the most important notion of HT is that it is not relegated only to hospitality spaces and places. The philosophy can be applied to virtually any venue - retail, healthcare,
In today’s world, where people have shorter attention spans, are increasingly disillusioned, and have higher expectations for tailored experiences, operators are being challenged to raise the bar and step into uncharted territory to meet our ever-evolving world. Where we have seen HT principles applied, we have witnessed positive, tangible outcomes — including increased occupancy rates, customer satisfaction scores, guest loyalty, operational efficiency and even profitability. Guests return to places where they feel consistently comfortable and valued. The Hospitable Thinking approach isn’t just about meeting current demands. It’s about anticipating the future needs of the industry and our guests.

Iam not going to claim credit for the expression ‘connection economy’; I do absolutely love it though. It speaks to a fantastic value system underpinned by conversation, laughter and real contact. The last few years have been tricky, to say the least, resulting in a bit of an existential crisis for the ‘office.’ I am buoyed though, firstly because I am professionally biased, but secondly as is the case with all good threats there is a very real call to arms for why designing great space matters more than ever before.
If the currency and success of the connection economy is motivated, happy and collaborative people –the infrastructure absolutely has to be there to support it.
I don’t think we are at the end or in fact the middle of the ‘hybrid office’ debate, but what I can advocate is that designing an office for people to be in, however many days of the weeks or unfortunate acronyms that come with it, can only be improved by spot-lighting three key elements: collaboration, movement and diversity of people and their needs.
We are in the midst of a very confusing time of workplace statistics. There are as many % figures advocating full office, no office, ooh-ahh just a little bit of office, but one thing all of them tend to agree on is the benefit of collaboration and culture building in person.
The first question I ask any client at the moment is what does ‘collaboration actually mean for you?’ It is too often used as a lazy filler word for anything beyond
being sat at a desk, but spending some time to understand it leads to some amazing design decisions. No meeting, workshop or discussion is the same and to promote successful collaboration requires the diversity of setting to match.
Moving mindfully within the office, thinking, dreaming, discussing, letting off steam – all of these things are absolutely essential to building culture and improving productivity. Boredom even, which according to recent data is the most significant reason people cite in leaving a job, can and should lead to movement. If a space is designed correctly to promote certain cultural behaviours there is maybe a chance that a walk made in boredom could lead to an interesting conversation, a connection, and a reason to stay.
Finally, understanding that no person is the same feels obvious or even too lofty to do anything with when designing an office – but this is not true. The output can be very simple and impactful in providing diverse settings within a space; poetically put, a ‘curation of energies.’ Not all spaces need to be shouty, and equally rows and rows of desks is not the correct answer. This is about design acknowledging all the senses, and how to play with moods, noise, smell and sounds – ultimately how is the office there for us on our best days and our worst.
Designers have a meaningful opportunity to impact people’s work and social life more than ever before. Tailored, individual and mindfully designed spaces are now worth their weight in gold in the connection economy.
The first question I ask any client at the moment is what does ‘collaboration actually mean for you?’

With over 12 years in the art and property industries, I founded my own art consultancy business, Artistic Statements, in 2019. I have worked with some of the top leading property and architecture firms in the UK, and have an incredible network of celebrated artistic and creative talents. I am passionate about creating stand out artworks for my clients, and connecting artists with unique opportunities to showcase their skill.
Here are my cultural inspirations who I'd invite to my dream dinner party...
LOCATION
Grotta Palazzese, Italy’s most famous cave restaurant in Puglia. There’s something magical about sitting in a naturally formed, large scale void – instead of an architecturally designed structure. It moves us on a deep ancestral level to be in a space that since the birth of humanity has been a safe space to congregate, communicate and create. A magical and enchanted place, this restaurant has been used for parties and banquets since 1700!
A menu inspired by Salvador Dali’s “Les Diners de Gala” the bizarre cookbook pairs 136 recipes over 12 chapters (the 10th of which is dedicated to aphrodisiacs) with his exceptionally strange illustrations and collages created especially for the publication. And of course there would be Dali - inspired artistic centrepieces on every table!
Inspired by Dali’s cookbook there would be performance artists mingling around the space, as well as an immersive musical / light show highlighting the incredible acoustics and intricacies of the cave walls!
My guest list
1 VIVENNE WESTWOOD
A rebellious, pioneering, female force of nature.
2 ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI
An Italian Baroque painter, she is considered among the most accomplished seventeenth-century artists, initially working in the style of Caravaggio. She was producing professional work by the age of fifteen. In an era when women had few opportunities to pursue artistic training or work as professional artists. What a woman!
3 THOMAS HEATHERWICK
In my opinion the most talented and era defining architect of my generation. He’s been responsible for some of the world's most iconic buildings over the last decade.
4 VIRGIL ABLOH
The late trail blazing, barrier breaking, black designer. His “expansive and occasional controversial approach to design inspired comparisons with everyone from Andy Warhol to Jeff Koons”.
5 ES DEVLIN
One of my favourite artists. An artist and stage designer. She is known for creating large-scale performative sculptures and environments.
6 BANKSY
Call me predictable but the single most famous artist in the world right now. His ability to merge art with activism and maintain a mysterious persona has contributed to his enduring popularity and influence in the contemporary art world.
I’ve been in the ‘creative’ industry for 30 years, inspired at age 13 by a book from a future boss who envisioned realities using only markers, fi ne liners, and gouache. That early captivation led me into Industrial Design, driven by imagination and whatever I had at my disposal.
I’ve worked in consultancy across diverse industries; food, healthcare, defence, technology, and more, though ironically, never furniture! Since 2020, I’ve expanded my focus to support hundreds of pro bono sessions with undergrads and recent grads, teaching A-Level Product Design part time, judging the RSA student competition, and collaborating with universities to shape modern design curriculums - all while delivering day-to-day ‘creativity’ to clients.
I am also a father to two teenage daughters. One at university, the other choosing university courses. I’ve supported both through A-Level ‘DT’ and attended plenty of university open days.
I feel I’ve developed a relatively robust view of how ‘creativity’ is taught in schools, encouraged at university, and required in industry so I thought I’d share some observations that may be useful to students and employers alike.
CREATIVITY IS MAGIC. IT’S THE FIZZLE IN YOUR FINGER TIPS, THE SYNAPTIC GYMNASTICS THAT CONNECTS ABSURDITY TO PRAGMATISM, THE STICKY BRAIN GOOP THAT CAN BE A VITAL INGREDIENT IN DRIVING BUSINESS FORWARD.
What struck me about the ‘teaching’ of creativity in schools is that it’s not. This isn’t a criticism of the teaching or facilities but of the system’s expectations. Schools (read exam boards) reward individual endeavour and academic prowess. Things that can be measured and ranked. Curricula assign marks for speci fi c steps in the design process, pushing students to create content that scores well rather than to seek provocative or challenging solutions. There’s investment in ‘kit’ but little in ‘time.’ Follow the yellow brick road, and you’ll reach the Emerald Kingdom. Unstructured, free fl owing creative exploration is not actively rewarded.
This is why I think Diploma and Foundation courses better allow students to creatively explore. But these require stepping out of the school system at a critical age - away from friends and other subjects they value. Schools are too tied to exam boards to offer blended paths, which may be why creative subjects are in decline at A-Level and university. Many students and parents are torn between choosing a subject they love and one they feel they “need.”
I often struggle with the notion that creativity needs to be ’taught’. Some people, by nature, are evidently more creative, yet I believe that even those who don’t see themselves as creative can fi nd it with the right tools and encouragement. I’ve seen people who are ‘deemed’ uncreative think in astonishingly inventive ways when given the freedom and structure to do so. Removing prejudices, permitting absurdity, encouraging collaboration, and letting failure be acceptable. No grading, just trusting your gut.
BUT YOU NEED TIME. POSITIVELY COURAGEOUS TIME. TIME TO EXPLORE. MEANDER AIMLESSLY. TRY STUFF. BREAK STUFF. FAIL MISERABLY. TIME WITH ENCOURAGEMENT AND GUIDANCE IS POWERFUL. REALLY POWERFUL.
I’VE SEEN PEOPLE WHO ARE ‘DEEMED’ UNCREATIVE THINK IN ASTONISHINGLY
INVENTIVE WAYS WHEN GIVEN THE FREEDOM AND STRUCTURE TO DO SO.
Every design student seems to think their portfolio needs kick-ass renders and meticulous sketches. Yet, most soon realise that employers value an ‘ability to solve’ over an ‘ability to polish.’
In interviewing young designers, I’m looking for their ability to work through a challenge. Understanding their thought process. How they connect the dots and craft solutions with poise and logic. I want to see scribbles, prototyping, hypotheses, evolution and re fi nement - not polished renders and curated sketches. All it demonstrates is that they can use software, but not necessarily their mind.
I’d rather hire someone less polished but oozing curiosity, eager to learn and with a drive to solve, than someone who can render the shizzle out of a shampoo bottle. Presentation and rendering skills are bonuses (like CAD or digital editing) but can be easily taught. Curiosity is innate and is gold dust.
Words and communication are also crucial, especially in an often-misunderstood industry, but I’d pick creative curiosity any day. The rest is workable.
Each generation of creatives brings new tools, but employer infrastructure often sti fl es adoption. Industries can’t overhaul their systems every five minutes to adapt to every new tool, but there is hesitation, often rooted in fear and ignorance.
AI is a perfect example. Fears of job loss or ‘cheap output’ abound, but like all powerful tools, AI simply helps creatives work faster and smarter. To think that AI will replace creativity misses the point. A Kevlar racquet doesn’t make Federer a champion, it enhances his potency. In the hands of a skilled creative, AI supercharges output without replacing it. Like Nitrous Oxide, AI alone won’t give better ideas, but it can amplify the potential of a brilliant individual. Don’t misuse AI to boost or replace less capable people. Instead, give these tools to creative folk, emboldening them to fl y faster. But remember what I said about time and encouragement!
One signi fi cant business struggle I’ve noticed, is the gap between knowing what you want in creative talent and what to ask for. For businesses irregularly hiring ‘creativity’, fi nding the right person can be murky. Further confounded by swathes of new titles, roles, and entire disciplines, even established titles are being repurposed. ‘Product Design’ once referred to physical items, but often now mean digital platforms. Confused? You’re not alone.
Then there’s seniority confusion. For some, ‘senior’ means 2 years' experience. For others, it’s 15. Titles like ‘Head,’ ‘Director,’ ‘Principal,’ or ‘Lead’ vary wildly by workplace. Do you need a ‘Design Manager’ or a ‘Head of Design’? Small title differences but big differences in expectations.
If you are a business looking for talent, be careful what you ask for. Do your research. Use human words, not industry-speak.
I’D
RATHER HIRE SOMEONE LESS POLISHED BUT OOZING CURIOSITY, EAGER TO LEARN AND WITH A DRIVE TO SOLVE, THAN SOMEONE WHO CAN RENDER THE SHIZZLE OUT OF
A SHAMPOO BOTTLE.
Creativity is often synonymous with art or fl amboyance, but that’s a risky preconception. A person who ‘looks’ creative may be woefully lacking, while someone not fi tting the ‘creative’ trope may be creative dynamite. Creativity isn’t about drawing or colourful imagination, it can equally be at home in Marketing, Finance or Management. Creativity is a mindset, not an output.
In a professional landscape where roles and titles shift constantly and solutions can be physical or digital, tangible or experiential, ideas can take multiple forms. The way I catch a bus, book a dentist, or choose a takeaway, all require high levels of creativity to differentiate. User empathy, interrogating the ’status quo’, peripheral awareness, thoughtful inclusion (or exclusion) of new tech - are all ingredients that demand creativity to bake.
Don’t assume creativity has a ‘look’ and don’t be fooled by ostentatiousness. It’s sometimes a cover for ineptitude.
CREATIVITY IS A POWERFUL THING TO HARNESS, YET ELUSIVE TO CAPTURE. TIMES ARE CHANGING FAST, BUT THE PRINCIPLES OF CREATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING REMAIN CONSTANT - WE JUST KEEP SHIFTING
THE RULES, DESCRIPTIONS, AND METRICS. BUT GOOD IDEAS ARE ALWAYS THAT. GOOD IDEAS.

DESIGNERS ARE INCREASINGLY USING PEOPLE-CENTRIC APPROACHES TO DESIGN SPACES THAT FOSTER COLLABORATION, WELL-BEING, AND IDENTITY, WHETHER IN WORKPLACES OR HOSPITALITY ENVIRONMENTS.
Just as architectural models, design renders and product samples might be used to tell the visual story of a space, so there are many methods to gather data to orchestrate a people-centric design experience, whether in a workplace or hospitality setting.
“To understand how people work, I interview the leadership, I do focus groups and surveys. I observe what people are doing and how they're doing it and also what they're not doing,” begins Jennifer Bryan , director of ABChange Consultancy. “When I worked with a technology company, I asked them about how they felt about their space – did it make them feel proud?
In the focus groups, I asked them what their concerns were and one thing that came out was a fear of losing their identity.”
JENNIFER BRYAN ABChange Consultancy Director TOM HELLIWELL
BDG architecture + design
Strategy Director
Reframing the amount of individual ‘desks’ required to a particular number of individual ‘spaces’ enabled Bryan to provide the type of work environment that genuinely worked for this client, moving away from a floor full of workstations to a variety of work settings.
For a leading crisis management and public affairs company, BDG architecture + design embarked on a mission to not simply redesign a shared workspace but, explains the practice’s strategy director Tom Helliwell, “to utilise people-centric design principles to foster a unified identity and enhance team collaboration.” Through engagement with employees, BDG uncovered that the core issue was a lack of shared identity and a fragmented sense of purpose.
ALEXANDRA LIVESEY Clockwise COO
There’s something for everyone depending on their mood, mode or task.
In addition to targeted surveys and management interviews, BDG employed its interactive digital collaboration platform during cross departmental workshops. “Employees delved into the intricacies of their work processes, team dynamics, and potential points of friction across the different business units. By mapping these experiences, we not only identified opportunities for space optimisation, but also pinpointed ways to cultivate a shared culture and collaborative spirit.” This resulted in the creation of ‘neighbourhoods’ to foster spontaneous interactions and also crisis management spaces where specific teams work closely together for intense periods of time.
“By focusing on the moments that matter that bring the different specialisms together in a space, this broke down the historic barriers making way for a much more joined up working environment,” Helliwell explains.
The convergence of office design and that of hotels and restaurants has been well-documented over recent years and is central to flexible workspace provider Clockwise ’s strategy. The firm’s COO Alexandra Livesey explains, “We’ve drawn heavily from the hospitality sector to create a true ‘people-first’ environment. Our spaces are designed with a welcoming, stylish aesthetic— inviting spaces where people can grab a coffee, meet with colleagues, focus on work individually, collaborate and connect. We have a range of different zoning to reflect this, each created to enhance our natural ability to complete different goals; long communal tables for collaboration, lounge seating for informal chats, big armchairs to take time out individually, private offices for working at pace and meeting rooms for more formal teamwork. There’s something for everyone depending on their mood, mode or task.”
Clockwise takes a data-driven and human-centric approach to designing its spaces, which includes sites in the UK, Belgium and Germany, monitoring Wi-Fi usage and smart sensors to understand dwell time and number of users. Livesey continues, “We prioritise wellness by ensuring that our workspaces are not only functional but also stimulating and inspiring. This means gathering insights on what environments support productivity, creativity, and overall well-being. We look at factors such as natural light, air quality, noise levels, music playlists, signage and ergonomic furniture to create spaces that foster focus and energy, but also allow for relaxation and connection.”
GREG KEFFER Rockwell Group Partner and Studio Leader
The wellbeing of the hotel guest is also one of the primary focuses of Rockwell Group ’s design approach, along with the staff’s comfort and wellbeing says the architecture and design firm’s partner and studio leader Greg Keffer, “[Wellbeing] encompasses every choice we make, from finishes, to furniture, lighting, circulation and access to the outdoors. By layering these elements, we create a variety of environments for our different moods and needs throughout the day: places for quiet reflection, for vibrant and spontaneous gatherings with other people, for good sleep, for good food etc.” He references Rockwell Group’s work on W Hotels’ brand guidelines, “We are embracing a duality that combines moments for both spontaneous and planned events, an atmosphere that is both familiar and the “un-Google-able”, and intimacy within grand spaces.” For JW Marriott Madrid meanwhile, there was a focus on relaxation, mindfulness, and rejuvenation “It has a residential feel throughout the lobby, amenity spaces, and guest rooms and a warm, neutral colour palette sets the tone throughout the hotel.”
Indeed colour can play a huge part in a peoplecentric design approach “Colour can speak to our emotions more than any other visual impression,” says Alina Schartner, who advises on design, colour and trend direction. “Each nuance has its own unique effect. So we should be careful about making colourpsychological generalisations. For example, not every yellow feels sunny and cheerful and not every blue is calming and cool.”
ALINA SCHARTNER Design/Colour/Trend Consultant Independent Consultant
JUSTINE FOX
Studio Justine Fox
Owner/Colour Specialist
Fellow colour specialist Justine Fox agrees nuance is everything. She says, “It's looking at the kinds of the tones of the colour, and even more, the relationships that those colours create. You do get quite a high response to harmonious palettes rather than discordant palettes. So whereas it would be difficult to get somebody to get a group to agree on a single colour, it's easier to get them to feel comfortable in one palette as opposed to another.”
The way the brain reacts to colour is something that’s really coming to the fore, as neurodiversity in general gets discussed more in interior design terms. Fox says, “I think the way to approach it now is much more from that aspect of hyposensitivity and hypersensitivity."
Back in the world of the workplace, Jennifer Bryan says, “It's about bringing neuroscience into play: sometimes you need vibrant colours but not so much with other people: they might need some downtime, they can't have those big, bold colours.”
Ultimately, she says it’s about the breadth of individuals you engage with in people centric design, something she calls a ‘change network’. “The people who I can't live without are HR, IT comms and marketing, facilities management, the line managers, the change champions and the change leadership. Your executive sponsor is key. It needs to be the CEO or the MD of the company, they will say this is a priority for us as an organisation, we all need to be on board and support this to make sure this happens. And that makes the difference.”

ROBIN AND JUDY HUTSON:
Robin and Judy Hutson are celebrated as the creative forces behind some of the UK’s most iconic hotels. As recipients of the Commercial Interiors UK Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Panaz, their remarkable journey through the hospitality industry is a testament to their shared vision, creativity, and a generosity of spirit that has shaped their approach to hospitality.
Known for delivering not just the expected, but what they call “the extra 5%” – the small, thoughtful touches that elevate a guest’s experience – their work blends intentional design, sustainability, and a deeply personal touch. From their early years to perhaps their best-known venture, The Pig, their contributions have redefined what it means to offer authentic, memorable hospitality.
I’ve always been aware of how spaces affect people and it’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my career.
JUDY HUTSON
The seeds of Robin and Judy’s hospitality careers were planted early in their relationship. Both were drawn to environments that fostered creativity and comfort, though their early professional lives were quite different.
Robin’s entry into the industry came after struggling at school, leading him to enrol in hotel and catering operations at a technical college. It was there that he discovered his passion for hotels and food. His career quickly progressed, leading to roles at prestigious establishments like The Berkeley, Claridge’s, and Hotel de Crillon in Paris, where he developed the management skills that would later serve him well.
Judy, meanwhile, began her career as an occupational therapist in London. Little did she know that this early experience would later influence her approach to designing hotel interiors. Judy reflects:
“I’ve always been aware of how spaces affect people and it’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my career.”
These parallel experiences would ultimately converge in their major joint venture – Hotel du Vin – and later in their boldest project, The Pig
In 1994, Robin co-founded Hotel du Vin alongside sommelier Gerard Basset, launching a boutique hotel collection that was ahead of its time. With Robin leading the business and operations and Judy overseeing the design, they created a brand that offered more than just accommodation – it was a holistic experience, where intimate, stylish rooms combined with exceptional food and wine, something both Judy and Robin had always cherished in their personal life. Robin explains:
“We wanted something that felt personal. It wasn’t just about staying in a room; it was about enjoying great wine and food in a space that felt welcoming and homely.”
Judy’s design skills were central to creating the brand’s distinct atmosphere. Collaborating alongside the talented trompe l’oeil artist Chris Boulter and designer Lisa Crewe-Reed, Judy brought the group’s vision to life. This experience of working closely with other creatives was instrumental in Judy’s development as a designer, helping her refine her eye for detail. She says:
“I didn’t have formal training in design, but I knew how to make spaces feel right.”
For both Robin and Judy, Hotel du Vin was about offering a genuine, authentic experience that felt personal and welcoming. This collaborative approach helped the brand stand out, and by 2004, after expanding the collection to seven hotels, the Hutsons sold Hotel du Vin – a move that propelled them onto their next venture.
Soho House and The Pig: A Shared Philosophy
Robin’s role at Soho House, where he first served as a director and later as Chairman, alongside his good friend the Founder and CEO Nick Jones, further refined his unique brand of hospitality. Soho House, a private members’ club known for its creative community and distinctive blend of luxury and relaxed exclusivity, shared parallels with the environments Robin and Judy had built at Hotel du Vin. Robin’s collaboration with Nick Jones helped Soho House expand internationally, while maintaining its intimate, creative ethos.
Both Soho House and The Pig focus on creating environments that feel authentic and comfortable, yet luxurious. Both foster a strong sense of community –whether it’s the creative minds of Soho House or the local suppliers and staff at The Pig. And both are spaces where design, food, and service come together to create an atmosphere that feels more like home than a traditional hotel.
The launch of The Pig Hotels in 2011 marked Robin and Judy’s most ambitious project yet. The idea for the first Pig hotel came when Robin, then Chairman and CEO of Limewood Group, was tasked with selling a nearby property in the New Forest that was part of Limewood's property portfolio but held little commercial value to the business. During a walk through the overgrown and neglected kitchen garden, Robin had a moment of inspiration, seeing how the garden could drive not only the design but also the food offering – becoming the foundation for The Pig’s “restaurant with rooms” concept. Excited by this vision, Robin decided to purchase 50% of the hotel with his management team, transforming it into the first Pig hotel.
Judy recalls:
“The garden was central to everything – the food, the design, the experience.”
With this inspiration, The Pig’s renowned 25-mile menu was established. Ingredients were sourced from within a 25-mile radius of the hotel, often directly from their own kitchen gardens, which are now an iconic feature of the brand. Robin says:
“We wanted guests to feel connected to the land, to the food, and to the experience in a way that feels organic and natural.”
Judy’s design approach for The Pig reflects her belief in the power of storytelling. Each property has its own unique character, which Judy brings to life through thoughtful design choices. One of her favourite creations is “Great Aunt Mabel,” a fictional occupier she invented for the first Pig hotel in the New Forest. Judy explains with a smile:
“I imagined her as this eccentric lady who lived in the house and loved gardening. That gave the property a sense of personality that you wouldn’t find in a typical hotel.”
This creativity is balanced with a focus on sustainability, which runs through every aspect of The Pig’s operations. From the use of reclaimed materials in the interiors to the sourcing of local produce, The Pig is as much about giving back to the environment and the community as it is about creating an experience for guests.
Robin and Judy Hutson’s story is one of creativity, passion, and generosity. Their journey, from their early years to their awardwinning work with The Pig, showcases a commitment to creating spaces that inspire, connect, and nurture. Their influence on the hospitality industry will be felt for years to come, as they continue to set new standards for sustainability, design, and guest experience.
As we celebrate their Lifetime Achievement Award, we honour not only Robin and Judy's remarkable legacy but also the foundations they have laid for the next generation of hospitality visionaries.
Robin and Judy’s partnership is at the heart of their success. While their roles in the business are distinct – Robin focusing on the business and the operations and Judy on design – they share a unified vision for hospitality driven by creativity, generosity, and a deep understanding of their guests. Robin says:
“We complement each other on our developments, I find the buildings, will decide on the spacial planning and how it affects operations, Judy’s the creative one giving these houses the look and feel. But at the end of the day, we both care deeply about creating spaces that people love.”
This vision was evident even in their early days, when they renovated their first home together. Judy recalls:
“We were working with a tiny budget, but we made it our own. That experience taught us how to be resourceful and creative, which we’ve carried with us into every project since.”
Their careers have been defined by this generosity of spirit. Whether it’s offering guests a warm, welcoming space or sourcing food from local suppliers to support the community, Robin and Judy’s ethos is deeply rooted in giving back. Robin explains:
“For us, hospitality is about creating something that feels special, but also meaningful. It’s not just about luxury; it’s about creating a connection.”
A Lasting Legacy
Robin and Judy’s impact on the hospitality industry extends far beyond their hotels; they have redefined what it means to create a meaningful, memorable guest experience by embracing the idea of always delivering "the extra 5%" – those thoughtful touches that elevate a stay into something truly special. Judy explains:
“It’s about adding that little bit extra, thinking about what makes someone’s stay more than just a night away. It’s what makes guests feel truly cared for.”
As they receive the Commercial Interiors UK Lifetime Achievement Award they are quick to acknowledge that their success has been a team effort. Robin says:
“None of this would be possible without our incredible team. From the contractors, the chefs to the gardeners to the housekeepers, every person plays a role in creating the magic of The Pig.”
In 2022, Robin was awarded an OBE for his outstanding contributions to the hospitality industry. As they reflect on this recognition and their decades of work, they are conscious of balancing their next steps with a desire to enjoy some more time for themselves. Robin reflects:
“We’ve done our bit. We’ve created lots of jobs, literally rescued many buildings, created some beautiful spaces, and incredible experiences for our guests and our team, and now it’s about maximizing the time we have left to do other things we love. That doesn’t mean stopping altogether, but we know that in 10 years, we may not be able to do quite as much.”
Judy agrees, adding:
“We’ve ticked the boxes we set out to achieve. Now it’s about leaving on a high, ensuring The Pig stays special and finding new ways to enjoy life.”
Even as they step back, the couple remain committed to maintaining the core values of The Pig. Robin concludes:
“We’re not interested in becoming a massive chain. What matters is staying true to the authenticity and personal touch that makes The Pig unique.”

CREATING SPACES OF CARE: THE STORY BEHIND MAGGIE’S ROYAL FREE
All Maggie’s are designed to be breathing spaces – where the impact of cancer can be put down for a while – a home away from home.
Dame Laura Lee, Chief Executive of Maggie’s
Maggie’s is a charity whose centres offer advice, emotional comfort, and a sense of community for people living with cancer and their families. Founded in 1996 by writer, gardener, and designer Maggie Keswick Jencks, it was inspired by her belief that “nobody should lose the joy of living in the fear of dying when diagnosed with cancer.
Dame Laura Lee, Chief Executive of Maggie’s, described the philosophy behind their spaces:
“All Maggie’s are designed to be breathing spaces –where the impact of cancer can be put down for a while – a home away from home.”
With a career spanning over 25 years at Studio Libeskind, Partner Carla Swickerath has made her mark on projects ranging from cultural landmarks to urban masterplans. As the Lead Architect for the Maggie’s Centre at the Royal Free, Carla brought this wealth of experience to the project, using thoughtful design to balance technical precision with emotional wellbeing. Dame Laura Lee continued:
“It was a pleasure working with Daniel and the team at Studio Libeskind to make that happen. The exterior creates a calm and peaceful space where people living with cancer can find the support they need.”
The Maggie’s Centre at the Royal Free stands as an architectural contrast to the surrounding medical campus. Carla reflected:
“From the very beginning, we aimed to create a space that would feel fundamentally different from the stark, clinical environment of the hospital. We wanted to design a place that radiated care, warmth, and humanity. The mission of Maggie’s resonated deeply with us. Their belief in how design can nurture, heal, and provide care aligns perfectly with our vision.”
Carla explained why the location of this project was an immediate concern:
“The site was small and not immediately prominent. There was even debate about whether we should hold out for a better location, but we felt that creating a place of care here was more important. It was about delivering physical and emotional support as soon as possible for those who needed it.”
The compact, sloped site demanded innovative solutions. The design uses soft, curving walls to optimize space. Carla explained:
“These curves help guide visitors naturally through the building, creating pockets of space that feel protected and offer moments of discovery and gentle care. The entry is open and filled with light, setting a tone of welcome and comfort. This form was crucial; it creates a sense of embrace, making the space feel less clinical and more nurturing.”
Materiality played an essential role in reinforcing the atmosphere of care within the Maggie’s Centre. The use of Nordic spruce for the exterior cladding was not only aesthetic but also tactile. Carla said:
“The warmth of wood brings a domestic quality that people can immediately connect with. It’s about creating a space that feels inviting before you even step inside. Inside, we continued this theme with oak finishes to maintain continuity and add a softness that people find comforting. Hard, reflective surfaces create a noisy, disorienting environment, but by using wood and other soft materials, we dampened sound, making the building quieter and more peaceful, which is essential for emotional wellbeing.”
Carla explained the impact of warm, natural materials on the acoustics:
“The materials contribute to a quieter, more peaceful space. The subtle sounds of light conversation and movement blend into a background hum that reassures visitors they are not alone.”
The interior layout of Maggie’s Royal Free was designed to flow intuitively, creating clear paths that lead to communal areas, private nooks, and counselling rooms for privacy and support. At the heart of the building is the kitchen, which Carla described:
“The kitchen is positioned so it feels both protective and open. It looks out to the landscape, making it feel as though the building is cradling you with care. We wanted the building to feel like it’s caring for its visitors, whether they’re gathered for a conversation over tea or seeking a quiet moment alone.”
Carla reflected on Maggie’s distinctive way of blending visible and subtle care:
“The staff create an environment where care feels natural and integrated into the space. It’s not about formal reception desks or barriers; instead, visitors might see staff sitting at the kitchen table, offering a warm, non-intrusive welcome. This approach helps people
feel at ease, as if they’re entering a space designed to gently support them, not an institution.”
Triple-height glazing, strategically placed windows and skylights ensure that the space is bright and uplifting, providing visitors with a tangible sense of openness and connection to the outside world. Carla said:
“Light is vital for well-being, and it’s integral to how we feel cared for. The light connects visitors to the outside world and offers a subtle reminder of hope and care.”
Carla explained why windows were designed to offer dynamic views:
“We composed the windows to provide unexpected views, framing the landscape and creating moments of quiet care. Even a glimpse of greenery or sky can be deeply comforting and nurturing. When visitors look out, they don’t just see buildings or concrete; they see life, movement, and nature. It’s an invitation to pause and find calm amidst whatever might be weighing on them.”
Delivering a project so deeply centered on care required the involvement of partners who shared that vision. Carla reflected:
“Maggie’s was an ideal client because they understood the value of design in delivering care. Their experience
with similar projects meant they brought invaluable insights, knowing what worked and where we could innovate.”
Architect Martin Ostermann and contractor Sir Robert McAlpine contributed their expertise and shared commitment to the project’s mission. Carla noted:
“Each partner brought their commitment to care and innovation, ensuring that every element, from structural details to finishes, contributed to the centre’s mission. Having partners who were willing to embrace unconventional approaches and find solutions that aligned with Maggie’s ethos made a significant difference in the final outcome.”
Reflecting on the impact of the project, Carla spoke candidly about its personal significance:
“Cancer touches everyone’s life, directly or indirectly. The chance to create a space that could offer moments of care and peace was both humbling and inspiring. It’s rare to work on a project that embodies care so fully.”
The lessons learned from Maggie’s Royal Free have already reshaped Studio Libeskind’s approach:
“This project taught us that care is not just a principle for health-related spaces; it can elevate any type of environment. Now, we think about care in all its forms, whether in a museum, a commercial building, or a public space.”
Carla and her team have created a space that not only embodies Maggie’s philosophy but enhances it. Carla concluded:
“The centre is more than just architecture; it’s an expression of care in every detail. From the flow of natural light to the tactile materials and welcoming spaces, every choice was made to support and nurture those who come through its doors.”
As Maggie’s continues to set benchmarks for peoplecentric, care-focused design, the Royal Free Centre will remain a beacon of what can be achieved when empathy and innovation lead the way!

PROJECT TITLE: OFFICE SPACE IN TOWN, LIVERPOOL STREET
INTERIOR DESIGNER: SAM KOPSCH STUDIO
CONTRACTOR: AREA
The journey begins at the reception, where visitors are instantly captivated by an elegant fusion of nature and luxury.
Office Space in Town (OSiT), renowned for its boutique serviced offices, has once again demonstrated its flair for innovative and imaginative workspace design with the recent unveiling of its Monopoly-themed office at 46 New Broad Street in London. This exceptional project was brought to life through a dynamic collaboration between OSiT, Area, and Sam Kopsch Studio. Together, they have crafted an environment that not only functions as a practical workspace but also inspires creativity, community, and a sense of play, showcasing the perfect blend of expertise and imagination.
The journey begins at the reception, where visitors are instantly captivated by an elegant fusion of nature and luxury. The space welcomes guests with a vibrant living wall, blending seamlessly with a cascade of golden chains that add a sense of movement and sophistication. The striking “46 New Broad Street” address shines in golden lettering, marking the start of this unique experience. Here, the classic Monopoly "GO" sign directs visitors deeper into the office, setting the tone for a journey that is both familiar and refreshingly different.
Continuing through the space, the boardroom captures the essence of Monopoly's celebration of wealth and financial achievement. This room is a true statement piece, featuring rich golden tones, luxurious leather chairs, and a striking crystal chandelier that adds warmth and sophistication. At the centre of the room stands a magnificent table, supported by a base modelled after the game’s classic race car token. The vault-inspired wall backdrop, with its intricate metallic detailing, exudes a sense of prosperity and security. This boardroom embodies OSiT’s ability to combine professionalism with the playful elegance that defines the Monopoly brand.
In contrast to the opulent boardroom, the breakout area provides a refreshing space where creativity and relaxation are encouraged. Here, vibrant orange walls and a playful ‘Free Parking’ sign evoke a sense of fun and nostalgia. This bright and cheerful space offers comfortable seating, inviting employees to pause, recharge, and connect –whether used for casual meetings or as a spot to unwind.
Throughout the workplace, Monopoly elements have been woven seamlessly into the fabric of the design. CONTINUED...
The policeman, a familiar figure from the game, directs visitors to the lift, transforming even the simplest aspects of an office into an experience. The lift itself is framed with metallic bars and the iconic "Go to Jail" imagery, enhancing the immersive journey through this whimsical workspace.
A standout feature of this OSiT project is the hidden speakeasy-style bar tucked away behind a wall illustrating the story of Mr. Monopoly.
Two themed meeting rooms add to the office's playful narrative. The "Liverpool Street" room pays homage to the office's location with a mural resembling the station platform, complete with commuter silhouettes, while the "Dice" room features a ceiling of wooden panels perforated like dice faces, creating a tactile and visually engaging atmosphere. Each space embodies the spirit of Monopoly, combining playful design elements with practicality to encourage both productivity and enjoyment.
A standout feature of this OSiT project is the hidden speakeasy-style bar tucked away behind a wall illustrating the story of Mr. Monopoly. This secret bar, with its deep blue tones and warm copper accents, offers an unexpected escape from the traditional office environment. The mood is enhanced by elegant lighting fixtures, creating an intimate and inviting atmosphere perfect for informal gatherings and after-work relaxation. It’s a cleverly concealed oasis, adding an element of surprise and delight to the workspace

EGGER is market leading in the furniture panels industry, specialising in advanced reproduction materials that offer the look and feel of authentic materials with less cost, less labour, and within the parameters of environmental frameworks.
From furniture and flooring to internal doors and worktops, its extensive range of product alternatives is designed to add value to commercial interior projects in more ways than one. EGGER UK Design and Product Manager Aimee Fletcher tells us more:
"Whether it is budget control, time constraints or achieving environmental targets, there are simple, accessible solutions in the market to help value engineer even the most complex of projects.
Cost is vital in design, and significant savings can be made by choosing alternatives to materials such as metal or stone. These not only cost more, but often require specialist fabrication or recurring maintenance, adding to cost pressures. Making simple swaps to reproduction materials can not only control the budget at source, but over time.
Take natural stone for example, which is trending in high-end design. With factors such as weight, handling and waste to consider, fabrication and fitting can notably impact a budget, often amounting to 1100% more expensive than an EGGER reproduction.
Complex fabrication can also delay completion. Stay on track with reproduction products in versatile
formats, that offer fast and efficient processing, reduce waste, and streamline project delivery.
Higher environmental credentials are another way to increase project value. Look for products that make use of recycled content and are recyclable at end of life, promoting material circularity. Manufacturers’ raw material procurement and production techniques should also be considered, and attention paid to supporting documentation available.
Product performance and design integrity are always top priorities, but there is no need to over specify. By selecting the right material technology for specific application areas, and choosing carefully developed finishes with high quality prints and textures, you can ensure a product’s specification is fit for purpose, with added value and without compromise on design".
Whether it is budget control, time constraints or environmental targets, there are simple solutions in the market to value engineer even the most complex of projects.

CIUK Mission and presence at INDEX – Interior Design and Furniture Exhibition Dubai, UAE 27-29th May 2025
SEPTEMBER 2024
INDEX SAUDI ARABIA - INTERIOR DESIGN & FURNITURE EXHIBITION
RIYADH, KSA
Diary Date:
The Creative Industries Trade Mission to Riyadh, KSA, from 17-19th September 2024, run by the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) in partnership with CIUK was a great success.
The mission was set against the backdrop of the hospitality sector being the second biggest growth sector in Saudi, particularly for hotel and hospitality interior design and furnishings.
A total of 14 design and furnishing companies participated in the UK Design and Interiors Pavilion at this sell out show, which provided space for both client meetings and for attendees to display their products and services. The companies who attended the mission were very optimistic of the real business opportunities resulting from their presence at the show and welcomed the assistance received from the CIUK/DBT team.
CIUK Mission and presence at Index Saudi Arabia – Interior Design and Furniture Exhibition Saudi Arabia, UAE 9-11th September 2025
Q1. What makes CIUK unique as a trade association?
A. At CIUK, everything we do links back to our members and how we can assist their businesses to thrive. Our work is built on three pillars: advocacy, networking and events, and industry-specific resources.
Every membership fee, ticket sale, or sponsorship is reinvested into activities that deliver value. Whether it’s opening new markets, providing key insights, or fostering meaningful connections, our focus is always on supporting our members’ success.
Q2. How does CIUK advocate for its members?
A. Advocacy is at the heart of our role. We ensure our members’ collective interests are represented in key industry conversations and at government level.
In 2025, we’re supporting the British Furniture Confederation’s Plan for Growth, which focuses on skills, trade, and sustainability. Our partnership with the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) gives members access to subsidised export opportunities, including trade missions to Dubai and Saudi Arabia. These initiatives unlock global markets and help members compete internationally.
We also lobby on issues impacting our members, ensuring their interests are protected and their voices heard.
Q3. What role does networking play in CIUK’s activities?
A. Networking is critical to helping members grow their businesses. At CIUK, we’ve reimagined networking to create meaningful interactions that drive results:
Formal Events , such as the Annual Luncheon, foster executive-level connections.
Informal Events , like the Summer Party, provide relaxed opportunities for relationship-building.
Exhibitions , including Clerkenwell Design Week and HIX, offer exclusive visibility through member maps and supplier breakfasts.
As the UK’s trade association for the commercial furnishing sector, Commercial Interiors UK (CIUK) empowers its members by driving growth across the industry. Every initiative we undertake is designed to support our members’ businesses, ensuring they thrive and lead in a competitive marketplace.
In this interview, Sean Holt, CIUK’s Managing Director, explains how the organisation reinvests in its members and provides value through advocacy, networking, and tailored resources.
Our online magazine , Design Insider, connects the commercial community with engaging editorial content, showcasing members’ projects and products to their target audience.
Q4. How does CIUK support members through resources and initiatives?
A. Providing industry-specific resources is another vital part of our work. In 2025, we’ll publish two exclusive reports focused on the care and workplace sectors, equipping members with actionable insights to target growth.
We’re also expanding our training initiatives, following the success of our sales training pilot in 2024. Additionally, partnerships with organisations like FIESTA and FISP ensure members gain expertise in sustainability, skills development, and education.
Q5. How does CIUK ensure members see a return on their investment?
A. At CIUK, we’re committed to ensuring our members see clear returns on their investment. Every penny is reinvested into activities designed to directly benefit them, from opening doors to international markets through trade missions, to creating meaningful networking opportunities and providing critical industry insights.
In 2025, we’ll focus on consolidating and expanding these efforts. Alongside advocacy and events, we are launching a dedicated marketing campaign to highlight the impact of CIUK membership. This ensures members— and potential members—clearly understand the benefits of joining CIUK, from practical business support to longterm growth opportunities.
Be part of the leading trade association driving success in the commercial interiors sector.
Whether you’re already a valued member or considering joining CIUK, Sean Holt would be delighted to discuss how the trade association can support your business. From advocacy and networking to tailored resources, discover how CIUK’s activities can help your business succeed. Contact Sean directly at sean@commercial-interiorsuk.com
