BRISBANE BOYS’ COLLEGE

2025 GPS HOME GAME PROGRAM

Brisbane Boys’ College vs The Southport School

GPS Competition, Term 3, Round 7

CulturalRound

LED BY BBC FIRST NATIONS STUDENTS

Brisbane Boys’ College acknowledges the traditional owners of the land upon which we gather today, the Jagera people to the south side of the river and the Turrbal people to the north side of the river, and we pay respects to Elders past and present.

An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for anyone to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country. It recognises First Nations peoples as the first custodians of this land, promotes awareness of their history and culture, and formally acknowledges their ongoing connection to the land.

Today marks the fifth occasion that BBC has held our annual Cultural Round. We are honoured to share the day with our friends from The Southport School. This event continues to be a crucial step in the path to reconciliation for Brisbane Boys’ College, as it recognises the importance of the First Nations program within the College and the wider school community. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds, and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s gear designs are infused with meaning through the collaboration of our seven senior First Nations students. They embarked on a creative journey,

exploring their cultural roots and personal perspectives, and together, they have enriched their work with symbolism and deeply felt expressions of identity.

The meanings woven into the designs include:

• Seven people – There are seven of symbols in the design, each representing the Year 12 First Nations students and their families.

• River – The river symbolises the journey of the First Nations students as they grow older and develop into Gentlemen of Honour. The river leads to a meeting circle, representing them joining the BBC community.

• Dot painting – The use of dot painting in the design represents not only the students in the First Nations Program but also the other students in the school as well. The union of these two groups into one BBC brotherhood is represented by the merging of the two circular patterns of dots.

• Torres Strait art – The inclusion of the Torres Strait art on the back of the jersey represents strength, resilience, and unity. This element speaks not only for First Nations students but also for the boys who wear the jersey.

• Meeting circle – The meeting circle represents BBC, where the students in our First Nations program gathered to become part of the BBC brotherhood.

HEADMASTER

Supporters, coaches, and, of course, our student athletes, welcome to Brisbane Boys’ College.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Brisbane Boys’ College as we celebrate the annual Cultural Round. Today, we acknowledge the contributions of the rich tapestry of cultures that comprise not only our school but the GPS as a whole.

Central to our celebrations today, we salute our First Nations students and their communities who have walked these lands for 65,000 years. We acknowledge this rich legacy through our Firsts teams wearing unique jerseys designed by current Year 12 students Walter Bathern, Logan Bradbery, Cooper Brook, Trent Finta, Cooper Goodman, Coen Jones, and Locklyn Thomas. This wonderful design celebrates their journey and connection to the College. We are immensely proud of their magnificent efforts. We will also celebrate this round with significant First Nations ceremonies before the First V,

First XV, and Premier Chess matches. It is an immense privilege to share these important activities with our friends from The Southport School (TSS).

We warmly welcome the boys from TSS and their families to BBC and look forward to a day of friendly competition, healthy rivalry, and fair play. We want all students to enjoy sports and to understand the benefits of physical activity. We encourage our charges to strive for excellence while impressing on them the importance of team spirit and sportsmanship. Similarly, we encourage all parents and spectators to set an example of good sportsmanship, respect for fair play, and applause for the endeavours of both teams. To help ensure this, I draw your attention to the GPS Codes of Behaviour found in this program.

On behalf of the TSS and Brisbane Boys’ College communities, I would like to thank all staff, coaches, parents, Old Boys, and friends of our schools for their support of our co-curricular programs and for their contribution to the success of our sports and activities. This spirit of fellowship and positive intent will be remembered long after the scores of the match are a distant memory.

I do hope that you enjoy Round 7 of fixtures and feel welcome as our guests. Mr Andre Casson | HEADMASTER

HEAD OF CO-CURRICULAR - SPORTS AND COMPETITIVE ACTIVITIES

This round is incredibly special for the College with what has become a highlight in our calendar: our annual Cultural Round, with BBC hosting The Southport School. It will be an extremely powerful and emotional day for all boys, staff, and parents involved. Earlier this week, we released a video explaining the significance of the jersey and what it represents for our senior First Nations students, a meaningful insight into why this occasion is so important to our community.

I am proud that BBC will once again acknowledge the traditional owners of the land, the Jagera and Turrbal people, through the ceremony and the purchase of special uniform items by our community to raise funds for our First Nations Program. In addition to this, and in recognition of this significant event on the BBC calendar, our First V Basketball, Premier Chess, and

First XV Rugby teams will be led onto their respective competition platforms by our First Nations students. All three teams will be wearing uniforms designed especially for the occasion by those students to promote awareness of the history and culture of First Nations Australians. A sincere thank you to everyone involved in the planning and preparation for the day and to our First Nations support team for their continued work in this incredibly important area. We are proud to acknowledge that our country is home to the oldest continuous civilisations on earth, extending back over 65,000 years. We thank The Southport School and their community for their contributions and wish all players the very best for the day.

We warmly welcome the GPS sports community to be part of the 2025 chess season, an exciting and enriching journey of strategy, camaraderie, and spirited competition.

GPS Chess is far more than a contest of moves on a board. It’s about cultivating a strong sense of community, sharpening valuable life skills, and creating lasting memories. Chess offers players a unique opportunity to develop their strategic thinking and problem-solving skills in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment.

Week after week, players engage with diverse tactics and strategies that enhance critical thinking, concentration, and patience. Just as importantly, the GPS Chess season fosters friendships and celebrates both individual and team successes, encouraging personal growth and resilience.

This year promises to reignite classic rivalries between GPS schools, delivering intense matchups and entertaining Friday night chess battles that will entertain spectators and players alike. Our teams are focused on refining their skills and gameplay to perform at their very best, lifting each player’s game to new heights.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome all players, coaches, officials, families, and supporters to Brisbane Boys’ College for another exciting weekend of GPS Rugby.

At BBC, we are proud to be part of a competition that celebrates not only athletic performance but also the values that underpin great sport: respect, humility, commitment, and camaraderie. These qualities are on display each week as young men from across the GPS network compete with passion and integrity, representing their schools with pride.

Rugby at BBC is more than a game; it’s a big part of our culture, a vehicle for character development, and a shared language that connects our students, Old Boys, and community. We cherish the opportunity to host our GPS peers on Miskin Oval and across our grounds, and we thank you for contributing to the spirit and tradition of these occasions.

To all teams taking the field this weekend: play with heart, uphold the spirit of the game, and savour every moment. These are the experiences that shape you, not just as players, but as young men of character.

Best of luck for the round and thank you for being part of the BBC Rugby community today.
