Es un honor para mí presentar la exposición de Videoarte “Ecos Simultáneos” en uno de los más importantes espacios de la Argentina: la Colección de Arte Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat.

Esta exposición es de particular interés para la Embajada ya que refleja a la perfección la conexión entre el arte y la tecnología en Corea.

En 2012 celebramos los 50 años del inicio de las relaciones diplomáticas entre Corea y la Argentina, y el año próximo celebraremos el 50mo aniversario de la primera inmigración coreana a este país.

Estamos en un momento crucial en las relaciones entre Argentina y Corea.

Deseo que nuestros pueblos sigan forjando lazos de amistad y mutuo entendimiento, y que los argentinos, a través de esta exposición, puedan conocer a los mejores artistas contemporáneos de Videoarte de Corea.

Espero que disfruten del mejor arte coreano.

I am delighted to hold this media art exhibition at Fortabat Museum of Art, one of the prestigious cultural facilities in Argentina, which can best present the combination of art and cutting edge information technology of Korea.

In addition to celebrating 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Argentina in 2012, it will have been 50 years in 2015 since the first Korean immigrant. At this meaningful moment, I hope people both in Korea and Argentina to better understand and love each other with this opportunity to meet up Korean media artists in Argentina, half the world away.

El interés por el arte contemporáneo de Asia está en crecimiento. Es para mí un gran orgullo tener la oportunidad de recibir aquí en Buenos Aires, la capital cultural de América Latina, a los mayores representantes de Videoarte de Corea.

En esta muestra, podrán apreciar las obras de videoarte realizadas por los artistas sucesores de Namjun Paik desde el año 2000.

Me gustaría recordar las palabras de Bill Viola. “trabajé como asistente de Nam June Paik, quien me ha inspirado enormemente. He aprendido muchos de su presencia y labor.”

As the entire world shows increasingly higher interests in Asian modern art, I am happy to have a chance to introduce representative works of the post-2000 Korean media artists in Buenos Aires, the cultural capital of Latin America.

Aiming for being transnational nomad, Nam June Paik made great efforts to communicate with everyone in the world with his rich imagination and change of conception. Even the master of media art, Bill Viola said that he was greatly inspired working as Paik’s assistant and learned a lot under his teaching. At this exhibition, you will feel profound messages from posterity of Nam June Paik who comes from the furthermost end of Argentina.

Ecos simultáneos

Esta exhibición analiza el lenguaje de formación del media art coreano y examina el significado de su práctica por parte de los artistas que aparecieron desde el año 2000, con distintas visiones de los medios o de la sociedad coreana contemporánea. Al mismo tiempo, la visión de Nam June Paik y su influencia en el media art coreano es estudiada en los trabajos de estos artistas jóvenes generando un diálogo que continúa en el presente.

Contrastando la vida real y la grabada, el video permite no solo reflejar dicha realidad sino también contemplarla. La historia del video arte comienza con los trabajos realizados por Nam June Paik en 1965, quien reconoció de forma temprana la importancia social y formal del video, dándole nacimiento al género del Videoarte utilizando elementos de la televisión.

Su rol sin igual en la incorporación de la imagen electrónica en el arte moderno con la utilización del Videoarte y la televisión marcaron una nueva era en el media art. Sus trabajos no estuvieron limitados a la tecnología del video o la televisión. Más bien, llevó innovaciones a las expresiones artísticas a través de cambios en la forma y en la estructura de las imágenes electrónicas. Paik desarrolló, junto con expertos, nuevas herramientas para la creación de imágenes electrónicas y continuó mejorando los contenidos de sus trabajos, la imagen visual y formal, integrando computadoras de alta tecnología y distintas tecnologías digitales en sus trabajos artísticos. Sus trabajos en video y sus imágenes experimentales no son solo memoria del pasado sino que presentan un deseo e ideal futuro donde los medios masivos de comunicación sean abiertos a los individuos de todo el mundo para que reflejen la imaginación de las comunidades locales a las cuales pertenecen.

Esta exhibición se centra en el media art coreano actual de gran influencia internacional. Hasta el momento los estudios se enfocaron en la figura antes explicada de Nam June Paik. Ahora es el momento de pensar en sus herederos, en discutir sobre su influencia en el arte y en el media art coreano.

A fines de la década del 60, solo parte del medio artístico en Corea conocía a Paik. En su obra “Good morning Mr. Orwell”, la proyección satelital de la mañana del 1 de enero de 1984 que conectaba Seul, París y Nueva York ridiculizaba la predicción de la novela 1984 de Orwell que “la humanidad va a caer en 1984 por ser subordinada a los medios de comunicación” dándole un nuevo sentido a la imagen de los medios desde lo artístico y la comunicación.

La exhibición está compuesta por tres secciones.

La primera sección “Viaje inverso”, está compuesta de obras que proponen volver a lo esencial de las cosas, remitiendo a discursos de la historia y la memoria, es decir, a las experiencias históricas y culturales de la sociedad coreana o a experiencias personales. Los artistas se concentran en la relación dinámica entre los recuerdos y el presente. El media art contemporáneo implica al mundo en el cual vivimos y produce realidades en paralelo con el mismo.

En la obra Miindo, Velazquez and some Ants de Leenam LEE, la comunicación cultural entre Oriente y Occidente se manifiesta en los lentos cambios que sufre la vestimenta de la figura de la mujer oriental y de la princesa pintada por Velázquez.

El trabajo Set de Miion exhibe el efecto de la imagen en la memoria, cómo los recuerdos se entrelazan unos con otros. Las huellas e imágenes que surgen de esa memoria.

Yongseok OH en la obra Drama No.5 muestra los sets de filmación de cine diseñados para crear una realidad ficcional. Si bien utiliza escenas de las películas, trata de realizar una composición más cercana a la vida ordinaria, que a la de ficción.

La segunda sección “Paisaje urbano e intimidad” está compuesta de obras que muestran vidas individuales y las visiones sobre éstas. Particularmente se plantea la pregunta sobre la vida en las ciudades. Los artistas exponen las perspectivas culturales y artísticas de los recientes cambios tecnológicos. El destacado grupo de trabajos realizados por ellos ha ayudado a esclarecer algunos de los temas más críticos y urgentes de nuestro tiempo. Los desarrollos que se han dado en los medios masivos de comunicación y en la tecnología no solo han cambiado nuestras vidas sino también inspiraron nuevos motivos y visiones artísticas.

El trabajo de animación 3D de Biho RYU, Euphoric Drive recuerda un videojuego de carreras donde las señales se deslizan constantemente por una calle amarilla a una velocidad de 10 a 20 km por hora. Es parte de la serie Flexible Landscape que describe el paisaje psicológico de la gente moderna acostumbrada al capitalismo.

Jongsuk Lee se dedica a descubrir la belleza en las ciudades tristes. Su obra las muestra como más confortables que la naturaleza. En su reciente trabajo Urbanwave-Fountain, monedas de oro caen como una cascada o brotan de una fuente, así presenta dos puntos de vista del mundo y de los deseos del hombre.

La obra de Sangbin IM Dreaming expresa el deseo de tener un reconocimiento en su arte tan grandioso como el propio artista, quien a su vez está embriagado con pensamientos dulces hacia los otros. La obra IM SANG BIN expresa el narcisismo de la gente moderna a través del rol del artista, una estrella emocionada a la que las personas llaman y le brindan atención.

La tercera sección “Detrás de escena”, está compuesta de trabajos de artistas que proponen descubrir nuestro conocimiento y manera de ver al mundo. Los artistas se inclinan por nuevas tendencias sin depender en su totalidad de la tecnología. Tratan de tener un nuevo punto de vista sobre su tiempo, como Nam June Paik, y un nuevo lenguaje basado en la percepción. Observaremos en el futuro nuestro presente

La transmisión televisada en vivo de “Good morning Mr. Orwell” generó gran impacto en la sociedad coreana, colocando a Paik en el reconocimiento público como el fundador del video arte, al mismo tiempo que reconoció al videoarte como una nueva forma de manifestación artística. La utilización del video por parte de Paik y la ruptura en el arte que provocó causaron impacto en la generación de artistas jóvenes que crecieron bajo el desarrollo de los medios masivos de comunicación, la industrialización y la urbanización provocando un punto de inflexión en la tendencia del media art coreano.

Resulta muy difícil definir el media art en términos nacionales o regionales, dado que siempre fue nómade en su forma. Sin embargo, el método de Paik en las videoinstalaciones, la televisión y la utilización de un único canal de video en las esculturas o instalaciones fueron aceptadas por los artistas coreanos de mediados de los 80 y tomado como distintivo de su arte. Estos buscaron la figuración con las instalaciones junto a temas del media art. Como exposiciones formativas que utilizan alta tecnología y artistas que se concentran en las nuevas experiencias estéticas que emergieron luego, el media art coreano crece rápidamente. Sin embargo, a mediados de los 90, los trabajos acercan la nueva tecnología a la vida.

Formas diversas de arte fueron perseguidas a través de los temas destacados de cada día o la tendencia de participación en la cual discutían los problemas de la sociedad coreana desde una perspectiva crítica, o tomando temas personales. Se generó una armonía entre creaciones de nuevos conceptos a través de los medios y la experiencia estética de fines de los ´90, cuando el arte de los medios se instaló como un género en el arte moderno coreano. Los artistas que formaron parte emergieron en esta época haciendo uso de un único canal de video en lugar de una nueva tecnología. Ofrecieron aquí sus opiniones independientes con respecto a temas privados o para la sociedad coreana, así demostrar conciencia crítica de la realidad en una forma descriptiva, que era expresar valores y culturas diferentes. A medida que los medios se volvieron más accesibles y variados, la sociedad coreana entra en una era que permite más espacio para la expresión individual y personal.

Ecos simultáneos investiga las tensiones derivadas de las relaciones opuestas entre el arte moderno coreano y el media art, entre Nam June Paik y su legado, la sociedad y el individuo, el arte y la vida, la tecnología y el arte. Estas relaciones, dentro de la sociedad coreana, son terrenos cambiantes donde la política, la religión y las identidades culturales se regeneran continuamente. Estos cambios de perspectiva generan ecos simultáneos y podrían ser la construcción de una nueva visión de la realidad, enriquecida por la creatividad y la imaginación.

Para la elección del tema de la exhibición se ha prestado especial atención a la actualidad en Corea, donde internet y lo virtual se están desarrollando al extremo. Allí es donde los opuestos virtual/actual, baja/alta tecnología y tradicional/moderno coexisten.

Siguiendo la revolución digital de los noventa, la primera década del nuevo milenio ha traído una nueva tecnología que seguramente terminará con el formato celuloide: el video de alta definición. A su vez, los artistas que trabajan con video se acercan cada vez más a las técnicas cinematográficas.

La generación de artistas del media art que emergió después del año 2000, se propuso crear nuevas relaciones y contextos utilizando diversos recursos: la utilización de la interactividad, esclarecer el proceso de la creación para obtener reconocimiento y cambiar las formas establecidas del arte utilizando aspectos del desarrollo de la tecnología.

Esta exhibición presenta un nuevo punto de análisis en el media art coreano a través de los trabajos de artistas surgidos después del año 2000. Realizadores que han experimentado la rápida transformación del campo artístico por el influjo de la tecnología digital y la aceptación de estos nuevos medios. De este modo, en conmemoración del trigésimo aniversario de “Good morning Mr. Orwell” de Nam June Paik, esta exhibición compara sus medios de producción con el punto de vista de los artistas jóvenes coreanos y realiza un diagnóstico acerca del media art contemporáneo.

This exhibition is to analyze formative language of Korean media art, by examining the meaning of its practice created by Korean media artists appeared since 2000s with various viewpoints regarding media or toward contemporary Korean society. At the same time, Nam June Paik’s view toward media and his influence on Korean media art are studied with works of current young artists in a parallel manner to suggest discourse of Korean media art continuing in the present.

Contrasting true reality and recorded one, video enables not only reflecting reality but also contemplating it. History of art-oriented video started from works of Paik in 1965. He early recognized social and formal importance of video art and gave birth to a new genre of video art by utilizing television set. His unrivaled role as mainstreaming electronic image art into modern art by using video and television is worthy of marking a new era in media art. His works were not restricted or limited by video technology or television systems. Rather, he brought innovation to creative expressions through changing form and structure of electronic images and positions of electronic images in space and television. He developed new tools to realize electronic images in cooperation with experts and kept improving contents for his works, visual images and formative shapes by integrating high-tech computers and digital technology with his artworks. Various video works and constantly changing images of Paik are not only to be a memory of history in the past but to present his wish and future visions toward open mass media in which individuals around the world and imagination and participation of local communities are reflected.

This exhibition focuses on the media art in Korea. His influence on media art is enormous internationally.

But now it is time to think of his heritages in Korean media art, because studies have focused only on Nam June Paik and his video art for quite a long time with no serious discussion in him and Korean art, especially in Korean media art.

Paik was not known to Korean society until early 1960s but even in late 1960s, only a part of artistic figures recognized him. In his <Good morning Mr. Orwell>, the satellite project which connected Seoul, Paris and New York in the morning on January 1st 1984, Paik ridiculed Orwell’s prediction in his novel <1984> that ‘mankind will fall in 1984 for being subordinate to mass media’ and imprinted new vision of image media as an artistic one with mutual communication.

como una situación paradójica, donde la complejidad, conectividad, perplejidad y la incertidumbre se unen. La adopción de nuevos recursos y dispositivos permite pensar esto. La reflexión ocurre realmente detrás de la escena ofrecida en la pantalla. El video como medio puede exponer la distorsión, revelada en el proceso, donde la relación del tiempo y el medio es contemplada, y la percepción pasa a lo cognitivo.

La obra de Junebum PARK Songdo Making for 3 channel video muestra las transformaciones que sufre la tierra y las ciudades a través de la información de Google Earth, Naver map. El resultado visual da una imagen única y novedosa de la realidad en miniatura como medio para entender el yo y el mundo circundante.

Kyungwoo HAN en su obra Star Pattern Shirt demuestra lo difícil que es mantener la objetividad en los actos humanos de ver y leer la realidad, cuando la verdad de los fenómenos no pueden ser vistos, sino interpretados subjetivamente. Un espectador descubre que la propia forma de su movimiento, visto en imágenes fijas, genera cambios en la iluminación de la obra.

En la obra Baum de Hoyeol RYU, un pálido árbol en el frente de un fondo artificial, ondeando por el soplido del viento, genera sonidos. Ofrece una experiencia sensorial que confronta realidad e irrealidad en la construcción de un paisaje de ficción con objetos reales identificables.

Yeseung LEE trata de mostrarnos el estado psicótico de la sociedad moderna causado por el desmesurado exceso de información, y la riqueza material en la confusa experiencia de la repetición y superposición constantes.

This exhibition is composed of three sections.

The first section ‘Reverse Journey’ is composed of works which allow the layers in daily life to return to essential things by recalling discourses in history and memory which are specially related with the historical and cultural experiences in Korean society or personal ones .

Artists pay attention to the dynamic relationship between memories and the present. Contemporary media art involves the world we are in and produces realities in parallel with the world.

Leenam LEE, through ants in <Miindo, Velazquez and Some Ants>, presents that the dress of the woman figure in Miindo and that of Spanish artist Velazquez’s Royal princess are being slowly changed to show cultural communication between East and West beyond simple changes of images.

Mioon’s work <Set> exhibits the effect of afterimage in memory that one memory is intertwined with another and previous memories arise together with later memories, the traces and afterimages of those memories.

Yongseok OH, in the work <Drama No.5> shows the movie sets which are simply designed and made to depict a fictional scene as another kind of reality. In spite of using the scenes of movies in this work, he tried to compose it in a way that is more like ordinary life, not that of a movie.

The second section ‘Cityscape and Intimacy’ is composed of works which show individual lives and views upon them. It particularly raises a question on individualized life in cities.

Media artists are invited to put forth cultural and artistic perspectives on recent shifts in technology. The distinguished body of works of artists have helped to shine a light on some of the most critical and urgent issues of our time. The developments which have taken place in media and technology have not only changed our daily lives but inspired new artistic visions and motives.

Biho RYU’s <Euphoric Drive> is a 3D animation work which reminds a racing game to present a landscape where signs keep sliding by with constant drive through the yellow street with a speed of 1020km/h and one of <Flexible Landscape> series, which describes modern people’s psychological landscape who have been accustomed to capitalism.

Jongsuk Lee devotes himself to discovering formative beauty in dreary cities and his work shows cities are more comfortable than nature and includes artifacts in cities as a part of nature. In his recent work <Urbanwave-Fountain>, golden coins are falling like a waterfall or gushing like a fountain, which is to present twofold viewpoints toward the world as well human desires.

Sangbin IM’s <Dreaming> wishes to have his art confirmed as great as the artist himself who is intoxicated with sweet thinking that he is adjusting others. In his work <IM SANG BIN>, he expresses modern people’s narcissism that he, the artist, is a star who is thrilled for others keep calling him and pay attention to him.

The third section ‘ Behind the Scene’ is composed of works whose artists propose to overturn our cognition which is deeply settled within us facing the world. Media artists indicate new tendencies of media art, not depending only on the technology. They try to have a totally new viewpoint about their times as Nam June Paik and new language based on the perception. We will look back at today’s

founder of video art came to be widely known to public and at the same time, people started to recognize video art, the new artistic form. Flashy image using Paik’s video synthesizer and destruction of art created a great sensation to young artists who grew up within the process of media being generalized and in Korean society at that time where industrialization and urbanization were dominant and provided a turning point in the flow of Korean media art.

It is further difficult to define media art in national or regional terms, since it has always been a nomadic form. However, the spectacle video installation method which exhibits Paik’s television and single channel video in the form of sculpture or installation art were actively accepted especially by Korean media artists of mid-80s and they were sometimes demonstrated as Korean distinctiveness. They headed to seeking formativeness based on installation along with issues of new media and artistic forms. As formative expressions using leading-edge technology and artists focusing on new aesthetic experience emerged afterward, Korean media art came to grow rapidly.

Since mid-90s, however, works approaching to the relation of cutting-edge technology and life have appeared rather than visual effects made by technology and more single channel video works than video installation started to increase and diversified forms of art were pursued through highlighting daily subjects or reality-participatory tendency which discussed problems in Korean society from a critical view or in personal themes. Harmonizing new concept creation through media and aesthetic experience in late 90s, media art was settled as one genre in Korean modern art. The media artists emerging after mid-90s on the basis of single channel video rather than new technology offered their independent views toward personal and private issues or to Korean society to demonstrate critical consciousness to reality in a descriptive manner, which was to express diversified values and cultures.

As media become more accessible and varied, the public, especially in Korean society enters an era that seemingly allows more room for self-expression and individuality.

The exhibition <Simultaneous Echoes> investigates the tensions derived from distinctive and opposing relations such as Korean modern art and media art, Nam Jun Paik and his legacy, society and individual, art and life, technology and art, in Korean society within shifting terrain where political, religious and cultural identities are being recharted. This contrasting perspective making simultaneous echoes could very well be made up of a new vision of reason enriched by creativity and imagination.

In selecting this theme, we paid special attention to the reality in Korea where the internet and cyber environment are developing into their extremes and the virtual/actual, and high-tech/low-tech. and traditional/modern are mixed and coexist.

Following upon digital- video revolution of the nineties, the first decade of the new millennium has brought another new technology which is slowly, but surely ringing in the end of the celluloid format: high definition video. The attention of video artists has been turning more and more to the use of cinematic techniques.

New media artists’ generation emerging after 2000s is one interface to create new relations and contexts and they show various manners such as approach to interactivity as making media works or stipulating the overall process of imagery imagination to succeed and simultaneously change established works in media art by utilizing developmental aspects of technology.

This exhibition would be an act to present a new indicator in Korean media art through works of artists emerging after 2000s who have grown up through experiencing themselves the rapid transfer in artistic environment for inflow of digital technology and also through accepting media art with new emotion. In addition, as commemoration for 30th anniversary of <Good Morning Mr. Orwell> of Nam June Paik, this exhibition would compare his media art and young Korean media artists’ viewpoints toward media and make a diagnosis of contemporary media art.

paradoxical situation up to the point where the complexity, connectivity, perplexity, uncertainty come together. The meaning of adopting new devices is to enable them to think. The role given from screen space can be discovered in an aspect that thinking actually behind the scene is offered. Video as media can expose distortion revealed in the process that the relation of time and media is contemplated and perception goes to cognition.

Junebum PARK’s <Songdo Making for 3 channel video> which demonstrates transforming procedure in land and city with information from Google Earth, Naver map. His image work as the result of a unique, novel idea to put images from reality and the world as miniature together exists as a means to understand self and the world surrounding.

Kyungwoo HAN’s <Star Pattern Shirt> demonstrates how hard it is to keep objectivity in human acts to see and read and the reality where the truth of phenomenon cannot be seen and it can merely be interpreted subjectively.

A spectator realizes that his own moving shape seen through fixed images at a moment when he passes through installed works is the very image lighting up where he stands.

In Hoyeol RYU’s work <Baum>, a pale tree standing in front of artificial background makes sound, flapping in the wind blowing from somewhere. It offers experience of sense which goes in and out of reality and unreality with fictional video image with the outstanding tree and wind and builds a landscape of a new world through de-general concept and reconstruction of objects existing in reality.

El artista le da un nuevo nacimiento a diferentes épocas y culturas, conceptos tales como la tradición y la modernidad, el Este y el Oeste, lo prestado y lo duplicado, la pintura y la imagen animada; en una sola obra de imagen en movimiento que los une. Toma prestado no solo obras de artistas occidentales como Van Gogh, Klimt y Seurat, sino también imágenes orientales incluyendo pinturas de la dinastía Ming y Qing de China, Dan Won Kim Hongdo y Shim Saim Ding. Reinterpreta esas imágenes tradicionales en una perspectiva moderna con intervenciónes e historias, diferentes a partir de dichas originales.

En el trabajo “Miindo Velazquez and some Ants”, el vestido de la mujer realizado por Shin Yunbok, artista del último período de la dinastía Joseon, y el de la princesa española pintada por Velázquez, son cambiados.

La modificación en las vestimentas significa comunicación cultural más allá del simple cruce de imágenes.

En la escena donde las hormigas se mueven con sillas en vez de humanos, pretende crear una corriente invisible, pero nueva, donde el Este y el Oeste están cruzados.

The artist gives rebirth to different times, cultures and concepts such as tradition and modern, the East and the West, borrowing and duplication, painting and image animation as one moving image and artwork.

He borrows not only notable Western paintings like Gogh, Klimt and Seurat but classical Oriental images including paintings of Ming and Qing Dynasty in China, Danwon Kim Hongdo, and Shin Saimdang while he reinterprets traditional images in a modern perspective with intervention in images and stories different from originals. <Early Spring Drawing - Four Season 2> is created with a work of GuoXi of Northern Song in China being its motive. It is produced through reinterpretation with his inspiration from ‘Early Spring Drawing’ which GuoXi painted with her inspiration at that time. He intends to make the classic shine again which has been locked in time and space through putting vitality in it through digital technology. He maximizes pictorial mood on the landscape which GuoXi could have enjoyed through changing seasons and aim to produce a dreamlike and dramatic atmosphere by making circumstances like abnormal weather changes.

En la obra “Drama Number 5” el artista seleccionó clips de películas de escenas cotidianas y ordinarias, (varias son tomas a larga distancia) y luego incluyó sus propios videos de lugares y escenas similares a las de las películas, creando así un collage entre ambos. Los lugares de filmación son simplemente diseñados y construidos para crear una escena ficcional. Sin embargo, mientras miramos la película estamos totalmente inmersos en ella y aceptamos el set como si fuera la realidad. Este es el por qué el artista decidió realizar escenas de la película como otro tipo de realidad, una realidad cinematográfica, opuesto a considerarla como falsa. Pero aunque él los considera como realidad, la estructura, la forma en que se percibe es indudablemente distinta.

Una película se estructura en forma unilineal, selectiva, constructiva y su historia es descripta de una manera ordenada. El orden y el mensaje de la película están determinados de acuerdo a las intenciones de una persona, el director. La vida, en cambio, no se da en un orden específico, ni tiene un mensaje en sí misma, sin embargo quizás le damos un cierto orden y significado de acuerdo a nuestra propia perspectiva.

Así, contrariamente a las estructuras de las películas, la vida tiene múltiples puntos de vista, encuadres mayores a nuestra mirada, historia sin terminar, es ilimitada. El artista considera que esta es la estructura de la realidad, la de la vida. Más allá de utilizar escenas de películas en su trabajo, trata de componer sus obras intentando replicar la vida cotidiana.

In the work <Drama No.5>, the artist collected clips of many films, depicting ordinary and everyday scenes, (many of which are long-distance shots) and then took his own videos of places and scenes that were similar to the movie scenes, later collaging them into one video.

Movie sets are simply designed and made to depict a fictional scene. However, while watching the movie, we are totally immersed and accept the sets as reality. This is why the artist decided to portray the movie scenes as another kind of reality - a cinematic reality - as opposed to considering them as false. But although he considers them as “reality,” the structure, the way it is perceived is undeniably different.

A movie is structured in a way that is unilinear, selective, constructive and its story is described in a wellordered manner. The order and the message of the movie are determined according to the intentions of one person, the director. Life, on the other hand, is not in a specific order, or have a message in itself – yet, perhaps, we give it a certain order and a meaning according to our own perspective. So, contrary to the structure of movies, life has multiple points of view , bigger frames of view, unfinished stories and is unlimited. The artist believed this is the structure of reality, of life. In spite of using the scenes of movies in this work, he tried to compose it in a way that is more like ordinary life, not that of a movie.

La memoria tiene el mismo efecto que escribir sobre un panal de cera. Como “escribir repetidamente sobre pergaminos”, conectando recuerdos previos y reescribiendo sobre éstos nuevos recuerdos.El video “Set (American wood house)” exhibe este efecto de la imagen secundaria que queda en la memoria. Los artistas pintan las imágenes de los paisajes con pigmentos fluorescentes en amplias pinceladas sobre la pared donde se proyecta el video. Durante los cinco segundos que dura el cambio a negro entre las escenas, el público observa la luminosidad de los pigmentos en la oscuridad. Lo intrigante es que la imagen del paisaje pictórico se percibe diferente de acuerdo al tipo y brillo de las imágenes proyectadas. Las superposiciones y persistencia de las imágenes anteriores inducidas por la alternancia de las imágenes de video e imágenes pictóricas (pintura fluorescente) no son más que un efecto palimpsesto. Un recuerdo se interrelaciona con otro y los recuerdos recientes resurgen junto con los rastros y trazos de imágenes de recuerdos previos.

La primera instalación que se observa se llama “Ensemble (ethics business)”, es un modelo reducido de un cuadrilátero de boxeo con humo blanco difuso, y 8 canales de sonido. La sangrienta pelea, los gritos ensordecedores, los aplausos, la fiebre de los espectadores y la escena de boxeo en el ring son simplemente reemplazados por un humo inquietante y el sonido de fondo de la habitación. El subtítulo, “Ethics Business” revela la dimensión ética, combinando el significado de dos palabras inconsistentes entre si como ética y negocios, creando una relación paradójica entre ambas.

Memory has the same effect as that of writing down on a beeswax panel. Like “repeatedly re-written parchments,” it entails recording previous memories and writing over by new memories. The video work <Set (American wooden house)> exhibits this very effect of afterimage in memory. The artist paints the landscape images with florescence pigments in a pictorial manner on the wall where the video is projected.

For five seconds of the dark change, viewers face the image luminous from the pigments in dark. The intriguing thing is that the pictorial landscape image is differently perceived according to type and brightness of the projection images. The overlaps and afterimages induced by alternating the video images and the pictorial images (florescence painting) are no more than the palimpsest effect. One memory is intertwined with another and recent memories arise together with the traces and afterimages of previous memories.The first one to notice in the installation <Ensemble (Ethics Business)> of a reduced model of a ring and 8-channel sound is white smog diffused onto the small model. The bloody fight, the deafening cheers, claps, fever of the spectators and the scene of the boxing ring are simply replaced by eerie smoke and background sound across the room. The subtitle, “Ethics Business,” unveils the “ethical” dimension of the stadium in this term, by combining inconsistent meanings of the two words—ethics and business, and creating the paradoxical relationship between two.

El artista ha desarrollado en su trabajo una búsqueda en torno al sentido de belleza instalado en las ciudades; en relación a la naturaleza y a los asuntos humanos de los últimos años. Trata de pensar distinto a la idea general que las ciudades son miserables mientras que la naturaleza es un ideal; luego de vivir años solo en ciudades, sintiéndose más relajado y cómodo dentro de ellas que en la naturaleza. Con las luces de la calle balanceando como cañas y carreteras de alto nivel que las abrazan como una olla, paredes de vidrio en torres de vidrio navegando como las olas, movimientos de postes de teléfono que parecen como si estuvieran dispuestos a soltar sus cables. El artista intenta generar preguntas sobre la vida real en las ciudades, y considera natural la presencia de objetos artificiales en las ciudades modernas.

Recientemente, su preocupación se reduce a la apariencia de las ciudades que rodean a la población urbana, especialmente las monedas atraen su atención. En el trabajo “Urbanwave-Fountain”, monedas de oro caen como en una cascada o brotan como en una fuente, manifestándose como los deseos que desaparecen, sin acumularse. Los dos lados de la moneda duplican los puntos de vista acerca del mundo y de la vida: el esplendor y la oscuridad.

The artist has worked to find a sense of formative beauty in cities and look into nature and human affairs for the last few years. He comes to think outside the notion that cities are dreary while nature is an ideal, after living all those years only in cities and feeling more relaxed and comfortable in cities than in nature.

With street lights swinging like reed and high-level roads which embrace them like a pot, glass walls on glass towers sailing like waves, movements of telephone poles which look as if they are unwilling to let go their strings, he intends to ask questions about real life in cities and consider it more natural in modern cities to have artificial objects for convenience in them.

Recently, his concern is narrowed down from cities’ appearance to surrounding of urban people and especially coins are attracting much attention. In the work <Urbanwave-Fountain>, golden coins are sometimes falling like a waterfall and gushing like a fountain. They brilliantly spring forth like desires in life but they do not pile up but disappear. The two sides of coins have twofold viewpoints toward the world.

The two sides resemble two faces in life with splendor and darkness on the other side.

“Euphoric Drive”, es un video que recuerda a un video juego de carreras, una animación en 3D en donde el jugador maneja constantemente a través una calle amarilla a una velocidad de 10 a 20 km/h mientras los carteles pasan continuamente.La mayoría de las empresas globales en la sociedad posindustrial instalan sucursales a lo largo del mundo para una gestión eficiente, construir estrategias diferenciadas, ofrecer sus servicios a los consumidores y generar así una ganancia constante. Los individuos de hoy pagan cierto precio por servicios que las empresas globales ofrecen, domesticados para disfrutar y estar conformes con ese servicio. “Euforic Drive” mira dentro de esta sociedad con un punto de vista crítico y envía el mensaje de que la sociedad moderna se encuentra fascinada en un éxtasis por el capital, como un espejismo vano.“Invisible City” es un trabajo de performance que comienza con la agonía del artista en la práctica social de arte desde mediados de la década del 2000 hasta principios de 2010. A partir de entonces, el artista se ha interesado activamente en la superación del sistema social contemporáneo, insuficiente y limitado, y ha llevado a cabo trabajos prácticos performáticos para la aplicación de diversos métodos de trabajo, como talleres cooperativos con participantes voluntarios, compartiendo la práctica artística a través de la producción y distribución manual para escapar de la vida cotidiana. <Euphoric Drive>, a video which reminds a racing game, is a 3D animation in which player constantly drives through the yellow street with a speed of 10-20km/h and signs keep sliding by. Most of global enterprises in post-industrial society locate a number of branches worldwide for efficient business management and build various strategies to provide their services to consumers and to make constant profits. Contemporary individuals pay a certain price for services that global enterprises offer and they are tamed to enjoy and be pleased with that service. <Euphoric Drive> looks into this society with a critical viewpoint and it sends a message that desires of modern people fascinated with an ecstasy of capital are like a vain mirage. <Invisible City> is the first performance work which started the artist’s agony in social practice of art from mid2000s to early 2010. From that time on, the artist has been actively concerned in overcoming the insufficient and limited contemporary social system and has conducted practical performance work for implementing various working methods including cooperating workshops with volunteer participants, sharing artistic practice through manual production and distribution for escaping from everyday life, etc.

Sangbin IM El artista considera que el arte es narcisista y por lo tanto es una actividad egoísta. El arte es un acto de publicidad para que el público recuerde que el artista es el sujeto que hace el trabajo. Según él, el artista es Dios y es una estrella. Intenta influenciarse a sí mismo y al resto del mundo. El arte es una serie de ironías. Es un acto artístico para salvar al mundo, en el arte se habla de narcisismo.

La tentación del narcisismo, sin embargo, está dividida hoy por un lado entre el poder y la adaptación, y por otro el otro con el muro de la realidad. Fascinado con ternura de creer que el artista los ajusta, él quiere hundirlos con su trabajo dentro de la grandeza del arte. En “Dreaming” el arte es para hipnotizarse a sí mismo, el arte es hipnosis. Es una creación emocionante para alguien que continúa llamándolo, insistentemente, sin prestarle atención ni enojarlo. Él quiere expresar este sentimiento en su obra “Im Sang Bin”: él es un artista. Dicho en otras palabras, él es una estrella.

The artist considers that art is narcissism and therefore is a selfish activity. Art is an advertising act for the public to remember the artist is the subject who does the work: according to him, the artist is God and a star. He intends to influence himself/somebody else. Someone is totally fascinated with his charm. Art is a series of ironies. An artistic act to save the world with art is narcissism.

The temptation of narcissism, however, is cracked today once again between power and adjustment and in front of the wall of reality. Fascinated with sweetness to think that the artist adjusts them, he wants them to sink into greatness of the art through the work < Dreaming>. Art is for him to hypnotize himself— art is hypnosis. It is a thrilling imagination for someone to keep calling him too much that he does not feel interested or even annoyed.

He wants to express this feeling in the work <IM SANG BIN>: He is an artist. In other words, he is a star.

Hoyeol RYU Los temas que atraviesan la obra de éste artista son fundamentalmente la realidad y la irrealidad. Por medio de la utilización de la computadora presenta situaciones aparentemente imposibles que son alteradas para crear una visión de la vida cotidiana desde otra perspectiva. El propósito de crear un nuevo mundo, basado en una nueva visión, no recae en la efectiva realización (o no) de estos mundos creados, sino más bien en una conceptualización posterior. Fenómenos aparentemente imposibles se vuelven posibles a través del uso del dispositivo tecnológico.

Y esto es viable, porque la ‘realidad cotidiana’, existe todos los días. Todo deriva de la creatividad generada a partir de la irrupción de un nuevo pensamiento y el quiebre con lo establecido.

En la obra “Baum”, un pálido árbol de pie delante de un fondo artificial emite un sonido de viento soplando desde algún lado; y es mediante esta construcción de un espacio otro, que se ofrece al espectador esta experiencia de sentido que fluye al mismo tiempo dentro y fuera de la realidad.

The fundamental theme of the artist’s work is reality and unreality. The artist presents seemingly impossible situations or phenomena within reality through the computer, alters them to unreality, to finally create daily life from another perspective. The purpose of making a new world, based on a new vision, lies in ‘postconceptualization’ in its truest sense, rather than ‘realization of unreality’ or ‘non-realization of reality’. Many impossible things are made possible by computers. And this is possible because ‘everyday reality’ exists every day.

All derive from creativity, when we begin new thinking, and break down what is established.

In the work <Baum>, a pale tree standing in front of artificial background makes sound, flapping in the wind blowing from somewhere. It offers experience of sense which goes in and out of reality and unreality with fictional video image with the outstanding tree and wind and builds a landscape of a new world through degeneral concept and reconstruction of objects existing in reality.

The artist expresses himself and the world in video image work. His image work as a result from unique, inverse thinking where images in reality and the world with models that he creates coexists serves as tools to understand ego and the surrounding world. In his early days, he shows works mostly using hands and his intervention as an artist here emerges as more expanded, different shapes in recent works. Image work which makes use of miniatures or attaches two-dimensional pictures here and there demonstrates that he constantly tries to develop and apply complex way of thinking for artistic creation which does not depend upon characteristics of media.

In 2009 when work for <Making Songdo> began, the 2 channel video work <Break> which was to capture those who took a rest in a construction site, the picture collage video <Making Songdo> which was to build structures in empty land of the new city and the actual filming video <Complex System> which was took at the same viewpoint as <Making Songdo> were produced and in 2012, drawings based on this area’s map and materials from creating the video <Making Songdo> were made into artworks. In 2014, <Making Songdo for 3 Channel> was produced which demonstrating transforming procedure in land and city with information from Google Earth, Naver map and Incheon Free Economic Zone (ifez.go.kr). Work for organizing the artwork is increasing for development of the city and it includes superficial aspects and internal structure, policies and conflicts involved and those who live here.

Mediante la imagen del video, el artista habla de sí mismo y del mundo que lo rodea. Su trabajo sobre el video es el resultado de un pensamiento propio, en el cual las imágenes de la realidad y los mundos construidos mediante modelos que él crea, coexisten y sirven como herramientas para comprender el ego y el mundo circundante. En sus primeros trabajos, el artista presenta obras donde interviene la imagen con la utilización de sus manos, recurso que se expande de diferentes formas en su producción más reciente. Imágenes donde presenta miniaturas o adjunta fotos bidimensionales dan cuenta de una compleja forma de desarrollar su propia obra, independientemente de los medios con los cuáles trabaje.

En 2009, cuando comenzó a trabajar para “Making Songdo”, el trabajo de video de 2 canales “Break”, realizaba la captura de la imagen de gente descansando en un lugar en construcción. El video collage “Making Songdo” fue hecho para crear estructuras en una tierra vacía de la nueva ciudad. “Complex System” fue tomado desde el mismo punto de vista que “Making Songdo”, y, en 2012, tanto los dibujos basados en un mapa del área como los materiales de la creación del video “Making Songdo” fueron presentados como distintas obras de arte. En el 2014, “Making Songdo for cannel 3”, fue producido para demostrar el proceso de transformación de la tierra y la ciudad con información de Google Earth, mapas Naver y Incheon Free Economic Zone. El artista trabaja actualmente en un desarrollo cada vez más complejo de su obra, que incluye aspectos superficiales, estructura interna, así como también las políticas y conflictos de los habitantes de la ciudad.

The artist’s works are originated from studies on people’s viewpoints and perspectives and they start from a concept that all facts are relative. Humans see the world based on experience which has been learned for their entire life. When two or more people look at the same fact, there are two or more viewpoints, which cannot ever be the same. Everyone sees a fact they only want to see. Among many ways to perceive the world, humans heavily depend upon their sight and the process for them to build perspectives is the most subject to vision. In my works, human act of ‘seeing’ plays a significant role this way. In the work <Star Pattern Shirt>, the artist uses the Stars and Stripes as a symbol of Western capitalism flowing into East Asia. The Stars and Stripes projected to screen is actually a scene where objects arbitrarily arranged in exhibition hall are reproduced through one viewpoint of camera, which conceptually displays modern society that capitalism is prevalent. A spectator’s own moving shape seen through fixed images at a moment when a spectator passes through installed works informs that a screen recognized as usually known is a landscape to light up where he stands now. Simple and familiar screen seems to be stopped but it is actually subject to real-time showing, which signifies installation screen played at the present moment. This work demonstrates how hard it is to keep objectivity in human acts to see and read and the reality where the truth of phenomenon cannot be seen and it can merely be interpreted subjectively.

Este trabajo demuestra lo difícil que es mantener la objetividad en los actos humanos de ver y leer, y la realidad en la que la verdad del fenómeno no puede ser visto y simplemente se puede interpretar subjetivamente.

Los trabajos de éste artista se originan a partir de los estudios de los diferentes puntos de vista y perspectivas de los seres humanos, partiendo de la relativización de todos los hechos. Los hombres observan el mundo basándose en la experiencia aprendida a lo largo de su existencia. Cuando dos o más personas miran un mismo hecho, existen distintos puntos de vista, los cuales nunca serán los mismos. Cada persona realiza un recorte personal ante el mismo hecho. Dentro de las distintas maneras de percibir el mundo, los seres humanos dependen en gran medida de la vista, y el proceso de construcción del propio punto de vista está ligado a la visión. De esta manera, el acto humano de mirar juega un papel preponderante en su obra. En “Star Pattern Shirt”, el artista usa las estrellas y las rayas como símbolo del capitalismo occidental que fluye hacia el Este de Asia. Las estrellas y rayas proyectadas en pantalla constituyen en realidad una escena en la que los objetos ordenados arbitrariamente en el hall de exhibición se reproducen a través de un punto de vista de la cámara, que despliega conceptual y metafóricamente la idea de una sociedad moderna en la que el capitalismo prevalece. Las sombras de los espectadores son vistas a través la imagen instalada, la cual se ve alterada al momento de la irrupción de la figura sobre ella, evidenciando el dispositivo de obra instalada en tiempo real. Este trabajo pone de manifiesto la dificultad de pensar en una objetividad en los actos de ver y leer, y la imposibilidad de acceder una única verdad ante un fenómeno que siempre será leído subjetivamente.

Standing on the border of reality and fiction, the artist is interested in dramatic or contradictory phenomena perceived through our senses. This kind of interest is expressed in various forms freely from an analogue way such as hand embroidery to a digital one with modern techniques.

Particularly in <CAVE into the cave> series which started from 2011, variable space is changed to a kind of stage through various forms of screens and light and dark steadily appear, which is a major element in its form.

Space of mimesis where reality is displayed as one play actually makes overlapping of falsehood and fiction so that it causes ‘intervention’ in a kind of awakening and cognitive changes to spectators who cannot look at the reality. Images presented through being programmed on a computer in advance and shadows coming with objects which are directly installed in the exhibition room (in situ) make subtle differences between the real and the false perfectly and they move in the systematic connection with sound depending on the flow of spectators. In this way, she intends to tell us the modern society’s aspects on psychotic state which is caused by excessiveness such as too much information and material affluence through confusing experience in the way of constant repetition and overlapping.

Ubicada en la frontera de la realidad y la ficción, el interés de la artista recae en los fenómenos dramáticos o contradictorios percibidos a través de nuestros sentidos. Este interés puede verse plasmado en diversas formas, tanto analógicas como digitales.

En las series “Cave into the cave”, que comenzó en el 2011, el espacio se transforma en una suerte de escenario por medio de la utilización de pantallas y de recursos lumínicos donde la luz y la sombra se constituyen en elementos fundamentales. Un espacio mimético donde la realidad se despliega como una obra de teatro, un juego en el cual la creación de un espacio ficcional o falso provoque en el espectador estímulos cognitivos que permitan verdaderamente observar la realidad. Las imágenes programadas por una computadora de antemano y las sombras que hacen los objetos instalados en la sala de exhibición (in situ), generan sutiles diferencias entre lo real y lo falso, y se mueven en una conexión sistemática con el sonido en función del flujo de espectadores.

Desde esta perspectiva, su obra opera como metáfora de ciertos aspectos psicóticos de la sociedad moderna, tales como el exceso de información y las experiencias confusas que parten de su constante repetición y despliegue desmesurado.
