Welcome to our Corporate Governance Conference 2022 Bishop Tedroy Powell MSc, Man Min; MILM Our Corporate Board of Trustees and I would like to commend the strategic leadership of our International Bishop; General Presbyter and former National Bishops, whom have had the foresight to encourage these annual conferences. These conferences are critical for the effective and efficient performance of our corporate church within the United Kingdom. Our focus is centred on corporate governance, which is more and more important for ALL organisations and those who are charged with leadership responsibility. Governance is the system of rules, practices, and processes by which an organisation is directed and regulated. It is our Board of Trustees, that are legally responsible for ensuring that our church organisation pursues its vision and mission within the parameters of our Memorandum and articles of Association and the regulatory instruments of the law. This means that as an effective board, working with our local churches we will provide good governance and leadership by understanding our role and responsibilities; behaving with integrity, openness, and accountability; and making decisions that are effective, inclusive and transparent. It is with these tasks in mind that we have prepared and presented this weekend’s conference. On reflection, Nehemiah’s leadership reveals the full suite of knowledge, skills, aptitudes and spirituality that were and are still essential for leading in the kingdom of God, even in the 21st century. What did he do that we must also strive to achieve? Nehemiah defined the reality of the situation, prepared a vision, and then engaged the people to accomplish it. It is my belief that the prophet Nehemiah provides contemporary leaders a brilliant model of principled leadership and organisation. Today, however, is a new era with new and more onerous demands for more effective governance and administration. The needs that are brought to the church are increasingly complex and varied. We, the church, must continue to accompany the offer of worship, prayer, teaching and discipleship in a safe environment and sanctuary, with the quality-assured framework of recognizable governance with sound and prudent administration of all its financial and physical resources.
