Tiny birds — brown and white western snowy plovers — have made Carpinteria State Beach their home, so when visiting the area, keep an eye out and give them their space. The species, which breeds primarily on coastal beaches between Washington and Baja, California, is designated as threatened under the Endangered Species Act; there are fewer than 2,000 breeding plovers left on the Pacific Coast, according to the California State Parks. Plover parents typically incubate their nests for up to four weeks, and plover chicks typically leave their nests within hours of hatching.
