Veterans honored PHOTOS BY ROBIN KARLSSON
Carpinteria honored its veterans last saturday morning, placing more than 6 00 wreaths on the graves of veterans who have passed at the Carpinteria Cemetery as part of W reaths across america, celebrated nationally in D ecember. this year, the cemetery was able to place a wreath on every veteran’s resting place, the cemetery’s Mike D amron said, thanks to the lions Club of Carpinteria and the McD ermott- Crockett Mortuary. “ it is a very meaningful act to place and wreath and say the name of the veteran out loud. Their sacrifices give us the lifestyle we enjoy every day here in Carpinteria and across the country,” D amron said earlier this month.

Carpinteria sees increase in chronic absenteeism as principals look for solutions
BY JUN STARKEY
Carpinteria schools are seeing an increase in chronic absenteeism rates, Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD) principals and staff reported at the CUSD Board of Trustees meeting last week. Three CUSD principals — Luis Quintero ro Ca ali o le e tary rett eiberg ro liso le e tary a Jamie Persoon from Carpinteria Middle School (CMS) — presented their respective schools’ 2025-26 Single Plan for Student Achievement to the CUSD Board of Trustees, at the board’s Dec. 9 meeting. The one-year plans, which outline a handful of goals for each school, accompany the district’s three-year Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby also spoke about student performances, providing a brief glimpse of the district’s 2025 California School Dashboard. The dashboard measures student performance across multiple areas and includes scores from statewide tests such as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), as well as information on graduation rates, college and career readiness and chronic absenteeism. According to Rigby’s presentation, chronic absenteeism rates have increased across CUSD. While chronic absenteeism had declined from the prior year at Aliso le e tary chool it i crease at Ca alino and Summerland elementary schools a i crease sig ifica tly at C . In response, Weiberg and Quintero said their schools are sending monthly attendance reports to families and sched-
uled check-in meetings with parents, a school psychologist or nurse and a school counselor, to address concerns about attendance. The district can also conduct a wellness check to ensure a student’s safety. “I think that parents don’t realize that two days here and two days here, and then over the month, now (the student has) missed an entire week or two weeks of school,” Weiberg said. “It’s really hard for students to come in and catch up.” ther goals or liso le e tary i clude meeting STAR reading and math goals and meeting or beating the CAASPP statewide averages, increasing parent artici atio e a i g stu e t lea ership and maintaining a safe campus for stu e ts a staff. Quintero gave a similar presentation to the board. He said the pair collaborate on a weekly basis, working together to provide a consistent level of education across their respective elementary schools. The schools also host a field day together twice a year, where students compete against one another across a variety of sports. CMS Principal Persoon also reviewed her school’s goals, which included increasing student learning and parent engagement and participation, among others. She confirmed that absenteeism at CMS has increased significantly from
Youth tennis players ask for rst call for courts
A few members of Carpinteria’s youth tennis scene spoke during public comment at the CUSD Board of Trustees Dec. 9 meeting, asking that board members put forth a resolution to prioritize youth players’ use of at least one court at Carpinteria Middle School (CMS) over other groups. When school isn’t in session, the courts at the middle school are open to the public on weekdays after school until dusk and on weekends from dawn to dusk, ith a first co e first ser e olicy according to the posted signage. he courts are o te fille ith ickleball players because there is no permanent pickleball facility in Carpinteria. Pickleball group leaders told Coastal View News in June that the wait times between games can be high because of the number of local players; the Carpinteria Pickleball Club Facebook group now has just under 270 members.

Ron Mousouris, a local tennis instructor who has been teaching tennis since the ‘70s, also spoke Tuesday night in support of the kids. “First lesson I ever gave was at San Marcos High School in 1971, the most recent tennis lesson I gave was about 45 minutes ago at the CMS tennis court,” Mousouris said. Some of the students that Mousouris has worked with at the CMS tennis court have gone on to graduate and play on tennis teams in college, he told board members, and he thanked the board for allowing him to use the courts for his lessons. “Over the 54-year period that I’ve been teaching tennis, kids here in Carpinteria represent a pretty unusual group,” Mousouris said. “A group that has shown themselves to be far more committed to their craft… than just about any other group that I’ve worked with in 54 years.” ––Jun Starkey

Preliminary design approval granted to updated downtown cell tower installation BY JUN STARKEY
Verizon Wireless’ antenna project design now has fewer antennas and a more cohesive look around the building’s clock tower, following Carpinteria Architectural Review Board (ARB) review and preliminary approval for the proposal at the board’s Dec. 11 meeting. The project — originally brought before the ARB on Oct. 16 — includes installing several antenna arrays on top of the 912 Linden Ave. building, near the iconic clock tower, to help improve Verizon Wireless’ coverage in downtown Carpinteria. The arrays would be installed on top o the buil i g ith e a ki g i gs installed on the clock tower to hide the technology from public view. A supportive equipment enclosure would also be constructed on the back building facing Cactus Lane, directly behind Pacific Health Foods. After that initial Oct. 16 review, project esig ers retur e ith se eral o ifications based on the board’s comments. An antenna array was reduced in size by se eral i ches a o e to a iffere t location on the roof, and panel antennas ere re lace ith a iffere t o el that only required one array at each location, as opposed to two. During the Dec. 11 presentation, led by city la er ret c ulty staff suggested reducing the width and depth of the a ki g alls o the clock to er to atch the tower more closely and to provide additional concealment for the equipment on the backside of the building.
Celeste Magennis with Centerline Communications, speaking on behalf of Verizon Wireless, also addressed comments on alternative project locations, which had come up several times during the previous ARB meeting. “There’s multiple locations that were looked at, and the reason that we went with the one that we’re at is, the location works, but we have a willing participant, a willing landlord, and that’s one of the har er thi gs fi i g so eo e ho is willing to work with Verizon on this,” Magennis told the ARB. She also said the applicant had done a structural analysis of the building to ensure the equipment will be supported properly. ARB member Lisa Woolf expressed her concern over the project multiple times and questioned Magennis on why Verizon Wireless wanted to improve coverage in the area, a matter typically out of the ARB’s scope. Regarding the architecture, Woolf said a fiberglass screen was not an appropriate match for the building. “I don’t think it’s an appropriate placement… I think down the road something is going to change,” Woolf said. “I’m just not good with it, and that’s it, I’m sorry.” ARB Chair Patrick O’Connor asked about the potential acoustic impacts of the equipment on the surrounding area. Magennis said antennas typically only make a light humming sound, but that she would come back with a solid answer for the board. During comments from the board, board member Richard Johnson agreed

He also agreed more coverage should be provided for the equipment on top of the building to ensure that those living nearby wouldn’t have their views obscured. Board member Richard Little voiced some concern about the material used to
shield the equipment, but he agreed with staff a Joh so regar i g a i g a ditional shielding for equipment located on the back of the building. The ARB voted 3–1 to grant preliminary approval to the project with comments. Board member Woolf voted no, and board member Amy Blakemore was absent.

If you’re one of those creative people who have started following the yellow brick road to this fascinating world called A.I., you’ve probably asked yourself: here o y skills fit i to this ra i ly changing landscape? In a time when computers can write poetry, create paintings, and generate photographs of places they’ve never been, it’s natural to wonder: Is Oz all it’s cracked up to be? Take a deep breath and click those heels. According to LinkedIn, human creativity is going to be more important than ever. Sure, A.I. can do some amazing things, but it cannot generate truly original content, nor can it create that deep emotional connection — the one that exists only between humans. One of the most magical aspects of human creativity is its ability to make others feel. Only human connection can help us fi our courage brai a heart. riginal creative work already stands out with a unique brilliance compared to computer-driven creations. While A.I. provides an invaluable tool for production, truly creative people will shine even brighter, becoming more valuable than ever. It’s true — we’re not in Kansas anymore. But there is a place for all of us in this new world. So let your creativity shine. Want to spark your creativity? Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens… It would be wonderful i the holi ays ere co letely fille ith our favorite things. But let’s face it: along with the highs can also come the lows. According to UC Davis, there are a couple of great strategies that can help us all stay grounded during this often chaotic ti e. he first is to a age our expectations. Try to let go of the “what should be” and appreciate what is happening around you. Don’t get lost down the rabbit hole of “more people came last year” or “when we were young the whole family was together.” Try to enjoy what is happening in the moment. Even more importantly, manage your expectations of others. Just because your home is decorated in bright colors does not mean people’s behavior is going to change. Try to accept people for who they are and where they are. At the top of the list is managing your expectations of yourself. If you are feeling brittle and could snap at any moment, give yourself a time-out. Go for a walk, fi a uiet lace or liste to usic. i e yourself permission to feel the full range of emotions that come with this time of year. ’Tis the season of giving, but try not to forget yourself. According to the Braven Health website, a Gallup poll shows that people become much happier after the age of 50. In another poll from Merrill Lynch, researchers found that 70% of people over 65 report feeling relaxed more often than not. So for those of us hanging out in the second half — enjoy! And for those in the first hal look or ar to hat s ahea .

Girls Inc. Inspir Strong, Smart Then an DUBOCKGALLERY.COM
WHY I SUPPORT GIRLS INC.
Lynda Fairly Girls Inc. donor, philanthropist
“I was raised by a single mom after my father died in World War II, so I learned to be strong, smart, and bold. This is so important for girls to understand that they have that within themselves. Girls Inc. creates the women of the future.”
A BOLD TRADITION
THE LONGEST-RUNNING GIRLS’ AND WOMEN’S ORGANIZATION IN THE UNITED STATES
Most Carpinterians are familiar with Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and its mission “to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold,” but many will be surprised to know that Girls Inc. was established locally in 1971. Reaching farther back, nationally Girls Inc. started in 1864 as the Girls Club and is the longest running girls organization in the country. It was formed 60 years before women in the US could vote. Girls Inc.’s history is 161 years of adapting to change, leading with pride, and standing up for girls everywhere by empowering them to fulfill their potential and overcome traditional barriers that limit who a girl can be. Current Executive Director Jamie Collins started building her leadership skills at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria in the basketball program. “I played basketball at Girls Inc. as a kid and built a lot of confidence here in an environment that supported and encouraged me,” she says. A big part of Girls Inc.’s approach to inspiring girls is through mentorship and creating a place where being a girl is celebrated. Today, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria serves over 700 students per year through after-school, in-school, summer and sports programming.
Lea Boyd Two Trumpets Communications Owner
KARLSSON
“Girls Inc. has always held a special place in my life -- from serving as a board member to proudly enrolling my daughter. We are fortunate to have an established and excellent program to inspire all local girls to be themselves and live without limits.”
Cheryl Wright Island Brewing Company Owner, Girls Inc. Gala Honoree
“In our community, there are many girls that have working parents and need an environment where they can have a safe gathering place after school to study and socialize. Organizations like Girls Inc. provide the nurturing after-school support that they might not otherwise have. It is important to teach our young people of today the importance of service, high ethical standards, and what it is to be Strong, Smart, and Bold.”
STRONG PROGRAMMING
BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN GIRLS SPORTS
There’s a banner on the wall in the Girls Inc. of Carpinteria gymnasium reading: “Yes, I do play like a girl. Try to keep up!” Carpinteria girls now have the opportunity to play volleyball and basketball, perform gymnastics or build new skills at the Carpinteria skatepark through Girls Inc. Recently, “Strong Programming” has expanded to meet the needs of local girls looking to explore new activities and build confidence with their peers. “We saw a need for girl-centric athletic programming in the community and expanded our Strong Programming to support that need,” Collins says. “We see girls trying a sport for the first time and building confidence and skills through facing challenges and exploring new activities, sometimes outside of their comfort zones. Girls Inc. is a safe place to learn.” This page generously sponsored by Hutton Parker Foundation

res Girls to be t, and Bold — nd Now
A RELIABLE GIRLS INC. FOR A RESILIENT COMMUNITY
With its long history in the community, Girls Inc. has benefited from lasting relationships that allow it to serve more than the girls on campus and in local schools. Through its Food Pantry and Community Resilience Hub initiatives, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria has expanded its services to those who might need a helping hand.
COMMUNITY RESILIENCE HUB
When Santa Barbara County and the Community Environmental Council began looking for sites that could be designated Community Resilience Hubs, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria stepped up and became certified. An official Red Cross shelter, the solar-powered Girls Inc. campus can house up to 500 individuals for three days during power outages or disasters. The Hub also serves as a year-round education site, hosting workshops on climate resilience, emergency readiness, and sustainability.
24/7 FOOD PANTRY
Through partnerships with local retailers, Girls Inc. stocks its 24-hour Food Pantry twice per week. On campus, the pantry offers fresh produce, nonperishable goods, baked items, and frozen meals to any resident in need. Just walk up and open the fridge next to the main entryway.
WATCH HER RISE

SMART PROGRAMMING READING AND STEM FOCUS
Love of reading is not the easiest characteristic to nurture in young people. Recently, Girls Inc. made it easier when it opened its new library with a design that’s fit for a whimsical storybook. A staircase spirals to a balcony full of favorite titles ready to be devoured off the shelf. Girls spend hours in the library reading and sharing interests. Literacy cannot be overemphasized, and the cozy confines of the new library signal to the girls that this is their purpose-built space to indulge in healthy curiosity.
END OF YEAR GIVING 2025
As the year closes, Girls Inc. celebrates the milestone and asks local donors to pitch in to keep over 50 years of excellence going. Generous donors invest in Strong, Smart and Bold Programs, because they believe that every girl deserves the opportunity to rise, no matter their income or circumstances. Donations keep the doors open to serve even more girls, expand After School Enrichment and Community Resilience programs, and sustain the support systems that help local families thrive. When one girl rises, so does the whole community.
Down the hall from the new library, Girls Inc.’s STEM lab is regularly set up for hands-on projects intended to unlock new skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Whether girls are discovering new perspectives through their microscopes or warming up the 3D printer to create, the dedicated STEM lab offers early familiarity with tools and lessons dissolving any notion that a girl doesn’t belong in a lab coat. “As extensions of lessons introduced in school, Girls Inc. Smart Programs enrich and deepen opportunities for local girls to sit with a subject and discover what they truly love to do,” Collins says.
GIRLS INC. GALA – MARCH 7, 2026 TICKETS AND SPONSORSHIP
Last year Girls Inc. asked the Bold question: is Carpinteria ready for a formal Gala? The answer was a resounding “Yes!” Carpinteria ate, drank, and was merry, all in the name of making sure Girls Inc. is a place to thrive. The 2nd Annual Gala, scheduled for March 7, 2026, allows Girls Inc. to share its campus with the community along with the inspirational stories of local girls achieving their dreams. This year’s theme is “Watch Her Rise,” and this elegant evening will once again bring together the Carpinteria community in celebration of the strength, ambition, and limitless potential of the girls we serve. Honorees for this year’s event will be Paul and Cheryl Wright of Island Brewing Company, longtime Girls Inc. champions. Investments in Girls Inc. of Carpinteria enable scholarships, excellent programming and sustaining a resilient community for all Carpinterians.

Hundreds of people drove, waved or sauntered down Linden Avenue last Saturday for the city of Carpinteria’s annual Holiday Parade. Filling the dozens of parade slots were local elementary schools, volunteer organizations, afterschool programs, city representatives, arts-centered groups and beyond, all joining in on the holiday cheer.

THROWBACK
St. Joseph Church, Part II
THURSDAY
BY DR. JIM CAMPOS
Editor’s Note: A version of this article originally ran in CVN Vol. 26, No. 41, on July 2, 2020. Part I of this series originally appeared in CVN Vol. 26, No. 24, on June 24, 2020; the updated version of Part I ran in CVN Vol. 32, No. 12, on Dec. 11, 2025. Santiago Campos, known to Spanish-speaking Carpinterians as “Chago” and to the English-speaking community as “Jim” — yes, this is my grandfather and namesake — came to Carpinteria in 1928, settling initially in Old Town. The family rented a house from the Manriquez family near Pear Street along the Coast Highway (Carpinteria Avenue). Campos was looking to build the family home when he purchased a plot of land on W. Ninth Street in the cul-de-sac nicknamed “Hollywood” in 1934. He needed lumber to build on it, and he was in luck. The Catholic Church was in the process of relocating from its abandoned church, La Iglesia San Jose on Upson Road, to a new church on Seventh Street. Campos paid $50 for the right to tear down the church and claim the lumber. Borrowing a large hay wagon pulled by two horses from his neighbor, Eugene cCafferty ather o Joh cCafferty author of “Aliso School: ‘For the Mexican children’”), Campos gathered a work crew: his sons Luis, David and Sal (Chava), plus neighbors Rodolfo Jimenez, and Lolo and Pablo Marquez. Sal, an eightyear-old at the time, remembers his dad wanting to roll a cigarette, so he handed him the reins of the horses on the way to Upson Road. The horses had a mind of their own, however, and did not heed Sal’s prodding, much to the youngster’s chagrin. Santiago’s crew tore down La Iglesia San Jose, carefully gathering up the lumber, arched Gothic windows, and bell. When asked about the bell, Sal, at the age of 93 years old, shot back, “The bell wasn’t in the contract!” How Sal recalled this detail — remember, he was eight years old at the time — is anybody’s guess. The bell was a special memory to Sal, but not in the way parishioners of La Iglesia San Jose had celebrated it. When lowered to the ground, it contained a honeycomb. Enterprising bees had converted it into a hive, and they swarmed around it. The honeycomb was removed and packed into an empty large box, a s uare fi e-gallo ti or lar . al his family and the neighbors scooped out honeycomb chunks by hand and ate to their heart’s delight. The result of this story is that in 1934, Santiago Campos constructed the family home on W. Ninth Street, and the Catholic congregation put up St. Joseph Church on Ninth Street, incorporating the bell, and the tall, arched Gothic windows into the design. Both structures stand to this day. In June of 1934, after the church was built t. Jose h s as assig e its first parish priest, Monsignor Jose Gutierrez. He was succeeded by Father David Ramirez the following year. The congenial Ramirez was remembered fondly for youth group activities like card game socials. According to author Jayne Craven Caldwell in “Carpinteria As It Was,” both riests ha e to Cali or ia ro e ico as the result of the Mexican “Cristero

ar 1 a co ict bet ee church and state that was raging at the time. Many priests were executed for their loyalty to the Catholic church as opposed to their loyalty to the state, the “federales.” “The Power and the Glory” (1940), an award-winning novel by British author Graham Greene, gives a riveting account o this co ict a its ra ificatio s. Jim Campos is a native born Carpinterian. Upon retiring from a 35-year career with the Carpinteria Unified School District in 2006, he joined a group of local historians to publish two pictorial history books on Carpinteria. Jim’s curiosity of local history grew from that experience. He is currently serving on the Carpinteria Cultural Foundation which honors the achievements and contributions of Carpinteria’s diverse community. He is also on the board of the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History, where he writes occasional in-depth articles. In 2020, Jim wrote an entire year of columns for CVN’s Throwback Thursday.

Cate Rams Roundup
Cate boys soccer is 3-1 through the first four games of the year, and the Rams are 2-0 with dominant wins against league opponents Foothill Tech and Coast Union. The Rams defeated Foothill Tech by a score of 6-0 in a road match on Dec. 11, where last year ’s Tri-Valley League Offensive MVP George Marin turned in his first hat trick of the year with three goals. Fellow seniors Charlie Dorion, Quincy Thorne and Kiy Barry combined for the three other goals in the win. Cate’s offense was even more successful in a 9-0 league win at home over Coast Union on Dec. 13. In this win, Marin exploded for five goals within the first 52 minutes of the game. Thorne, Dorion and senior Dimash Anuarbek added four combined goals in the win. Cate boys basketball claimed its first win of the year with a 57-27 victory over Channel Island at the Thacher Tournament on Dec. 11. The Rams were led by juniors Jackson Steele and Braylin Glomah, with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Sophomore Michael Mumbo also scored in the double digits with 10 points in the win. After picking up the win, Cate lost the two remaining tournament games, falling to Santa Clara by a score of 65-45 and dropping the final game to Orcutt Academy by a score of 57-32.
