Over eight inches of rain hit Carpinteria

Carpinteria ended 2025 and kicked off 2026 with storms that brought 8.43 inches of rain to the area between Dec. 22, 2025, and Jan. 5, 2026. King tides of over seven feet were also recorded around Jan. 3.

The National Weather Service called the rainfall totals that hit Southern California over that period “impressive”; nearby, Montecito recorded 10.51 inches of rain, with 10.24 in Santa Barbara and 10.22 in Goleta. The Santa Barbara Airport closed during last week’s storm due to ooding on the airfield, while officials shut down Highway 101 along the Gaviota Coast due to debris ows and ooding.

Amtrak Train services just north of Goleta remain closed as of publication due to storm-damaged tracks. Linden Avenue Improvements Project construction begins next week

Construction for the Linden Avenue Improvements Project is set to begin on Monday, Jan. 12, with construction hours scheduled between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

“Please drive with caution and be prepared for potential delays,” city representatives said on social media.

The project includes new sidewalks, curb ramps, landscaping and a new separate bikeway. The pavement will also be resurfaced and improvements to the storm drain system will be made.

Area to honor lives lost in

debris ow

An event remembering those who lost their lives in the Jan. 9, 201 debris ow in Montecito is set for Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, at Montecito Union School, 385 San Ysidro Road.

The annual remembrance, Raising Our Light, invites community members to a reading of the names of the 23 people who lost their lives in the debris ow.

Every drop counts: CVWD and the road to recycled water

Carpinteria Valley Water District (CVWD) was founded in 1941 with one basic purpose: Protect the groundwater.

In the ‘40s, water from wells was the only source of the community’s drinking water.

Today, the district is in the final steps of preparation for construction of landmark recycled water infrastructure, the Carpinteria Advanced Purification Project (CAPP). Through CAPP, treated wastewater that would normally be released to the ocean will be diverted and thoroughly purified to meet or e ceed safe drinking water standards; it will then be put into the underground aquifer where it can be stored for later use as a reliable local water supply for the community. It’s a big change, and one that has caused some to pause and question the necessity of the investment.

So, how did we get here? The answer is this: Since CVWD’s founding, water has only gotten scarcer in the Carpinteria Valley. When our water supply is strained, CVWD acts.

In response to groundwater overdraft in the 1940s, CVWD contracted for water from Lake Cachuma through the Cachuma Project, giving the community a surface water source. Following the severe drought of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the district invested in importing water from Northern California by buying into the State Water Project (SWP).

Meanwhile, the district continued to proactively manage groundwater, initiating the formal Groundwater Sustainability Plan under the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. These decisions proved critical.

Lake Cachuma has been highly reliable for the district since deliveries started in the 1950s. However, Lake Cachuma allocations were severely curtailed during the historic drought of 2011-2022. During this drought, lake storage dropped as low as 8%, and allocations were halted. That’s when the State Water Project provided essential deliveries. espite the state e periencing severe drought, CVWD received 60% of its planned SWP allocation, keeping taps running in Carpinteria.

Obituary

Lupe (Ortiz) Luera 11/02/1934 — 11/22/2025

Lupe (Ortiz) Luera passed away suddenly on Nov. 22, 2025.

Lupe was born and raised in Santa Barbara until she met her husband, Frank. They lived and raised their family in Carpinteria. She was artistic, compassionate, loving and patient. She loved animals, fashion and sports on TV,

listened to many without judgment, was always there for others, and helped when she could. She was subtle, stubborn, and had a great sense of humor. Most of all, she loved her faith and belief in Jesus.

There are many stories of making tamales with family and friends, camping, barbecues at Oak Park with family, casino trips, craft fairs, art classes, and the e citing ups and downs of raising two sons and a daughter. She made sure that we were taken care of and that we treated others how we wanted to be treated. She loved her family and friends deeply.

She is survived by her son Johnny (Julie) and her daughter Rebecca (Kevin).

She is preceded in death by her loving husband Frank and her eldest son Steven.

She has seven grandchildren and si great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.

Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 9 at St. Joseph Church in Carpinteria, Calif., at 1:30 p.m. A reception will follow burial services.

These decisions were made with the people who live here in mind — for the ne t generation of Carpinterian families.

Despite having some of the lowest water use rates in the state during the historic drought, Carpinteria depended on our groundwater to fill the gap left by the Cachuma and SWP shortfalls.

The result: severe over pumping of the groundwater basin and record-low groundwater levels. This was a sign to CVWD. Our current water supplies, our focus on conservation, it isn’t enough. We need a new solution.

Enter CAPP, a return to the district’s

groundwater recharge roots. CAPP will replenish the groundwater basin with purified recycled water, creating a locally-controlled, drought-resistant drinking water supply. CAPP keeps water local, giving Carpinterians independence from a heavy reliance on outside water sources and allowing local government more control over the water rates our families pay.

History has shown us just how unpredictable our surface water supplies are during times of continuing and historic drought. History has also shown us what a difference it makes when the Carpinteria Valley Water District prepares for the future.

After 46 years of service and 15 years with the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District (CSFPD), Fire Chief Robert Kovach will retire on Jan. 23.

Kovach told Coastal View News a new fire chief has already been selected, to be announced at a later date.

“I was very fortunate to be hired here, the citizens are very welcoming,” Kovach said of his time in Carpinteria. “It has been an honor working with the men and women at this agency.” ovach’s firefighting career began in 1979, when, inspired by his best friend’s father, Kovach and his best friend enlisted as reserve firefighters with the Lompoc City Fire Department. In 1985, Kovach was promoted to full-time; he would serve as fire engineer, fire captain, and battalion chief at the Lompoc City Fire Department until he left to join the CSFPD as a battalion chief in 2011.

During his time at the CSFPD, Kovach said some of the most impactful moments came during the 2017 Thomas Fire and the subsequent debris ow in Montecito in January 2018. During the Thomas Fire, Kovach and another battalion chief worked in rotating 12-hour shifts, supervising dozens of firefighters protecting homes threatened by the ames. “It was all hands on deck, 24/7,” Kovach said.

was proud of the progress made on the Summerland Fire Station project, which ovach took over when he became fire chief. The Summerland Fire Station was called a “health and safety hazard” in a CityGate study presented to the fire district’s Board of Directors in 2016. “The current spot is not ideal,” Kovach said.

A new fire station would be safer for the firefighters stationed there and improve response time for Summerland and Carpinteria. The fire district is attempting to acquire a nearby property to expand the station, Kovach said, though the process is slow moving.

During retirement, he hopes to explore the outdoors, including hiking, camping, hitting the beach and traveling across the country with his wife. He also plans to spend time with his grandchildren, with one granddaughter and another set to be born later this month.

THE ART OF SELF CARE DR. DEBORAH S M I LOV I T Z FO ST E R Many of us want to understand our childhood and how we became the people we are today. Most of us have endured some form of trauma. The key is how we cope with our traumas through transformation and healing.

Children are born with a remarkable capacity to know. They sense what is safe and what is threatening, what feels right and what does not, often long before they have words to describe it. In the therapy room, this knowing reveals itself through play, gesture, silence and sudden emotional shifts. Many clinicians quietly recognize this phenomenon as intuition.

Intuition, however, is not immune to experience. It can be shaped, narrowed and distorted — particularly by trauma. One of the central findings of my research work is that children who have experienced severe trauma do not lose intuition; rather, their intuitive capacity becomes reorganized around survival.

What once supported curiosity, imagination and relational connection begins to serve vigilance, protection, and threat detection. Intuition remains active, but it no longer feels expansive. It becomes sharp, fast and often exhausting.

Trauma alters the child’s orientation toward the world. Instead of asking “What can I discover?” the traumatized child’s internal system asks, “What must I anticipate to stay safe?” In this state,

intuition fuses with hypervigilance. The child may appear unusually perceptive, keenly attuned to subtle shifts in tone, facial expression or emotional atmosphere.

Yet this sensitivity is no longer guided by playfulness or exploration. It is driven by fear.

Clinicians often describe these children as “old beyond their years,” intensely watchful, or prematurely attuned to others’ emotional states. While this can resemble heightened intuition, it lacks the openness and e ibility that characterize healthy intuitive functioning. Instead, it re ects a psyche shaped by threat. Here, intuition does not disappear. It becomes a warning system.

Children with significant trauma histories frequently show disruptions in emotional regulation. Their play may be repetitive, constricted, or dominated by themes of danger and control. Language may be sparse or, at times, overly precise, as though exactness itself were a form of protection.

In therapy, these children often seem to “know” what will happen next — not because they are intuitively aligned with the therapeutic process, but because they expect rupture. They anticipate intrusion, disappointment, or abandonment, and their intuitive responses re ect this expectation.

This is not a failure of intuition. It is intuition shaped by lived experience. When intuition develops under chronic stress, it becomes oriented toward detecting threat rather than meaning. The child’s inner compass still functions, but it points relentlessly toward danger.

Across clinicians’ experiences, one factor emerges with striking consistency: the protective role of a psychologically present caregiver, most often the mother or primary attachment figure. Children who have access to an emotionally available caregiver — whether physically present or reliably internalized — demonstrate greater e ibility in their intuitive capacity. These children are more likely to engage in imaginative play; respond with curiosity rather than suspicion; shift

emotional states with support; and use intuition as a guide rather than a defense.

The presence of a stable attachment figure allows intuition to remain relational. It supports the child’s ability to sense not only danger, but also possibility. By contrast, children who lack this internalized presence often struggle to trust their own perceptions. Their intuition may feel overwhelming or chaotic, leading to emotional withdrawal, impulsivity or rigid control.

In the therapy room, intuition rarely arrives as insight. More often, it appears as movement. Children seem to know what needs attention even when they cannot articulate it. They return to particular themes, select specific toys, or gravitate toward emotional states with striking consistency. Clinicians frequently describe moments in which the child appears to lead the therapy — not consciously, but intuitively.

Progress occurs when the therapist recognizes and respects this movement rather than overriding it with technique or premature interpretation. For traumatized children, this process unfolds slowly. Intuitive signals may be fragmented, indirect or embedded in defensive behaviors. The therapist’s task is not to correct intuition, but to contain it, to create a relational environment in which intuitive knowing can gradually reorganize itself around safety and meaning.

Healing does not require eliminating vigilance. It requires transforming it. As therapy progresses and the child experiences consistent emotional attunement, intuition begins to shift. Hypervigilance

softens. Curiosity reemerges. Play becomes more flexible. The child grows increasingly able to tolerate uncertainty rather than fear it. Transformation is critical for our healing process to occur.

At this point, intuition regains its original function: not merely to protect, but to guide. This transformation is subtle and often occurs beyond conscious awareness. Yet clinicians recognize it when it happens. The child becomes more present, more spontaneous, less driven by anticipation, and more open to experience. Intuition, once narrowed by trauma, begins to feel like knowing again.

Children do not need to be taught intuition. They need environments, both relational and therapeutic, that allow it to unfold safely. When trauma is acknowledged rather than minimized, when attachment is honored rather than assumed, and when therapists listen beyond words, intuition becomes one of the most powerful forces in healing.

The child already knows the way. Our task is to listen.

High weekly seal counts over Summer 2025 averaged approximately 70-80. The seals were frequently absent by mid-morning because of beach walkers. Recent storms brought a lot of oating debris, and logs rolling on the beach disturbed the seals on occasion.

VISITORS

Seal Watch volunteers began greeting visitors at the seal sanctuary overlook on Jan. 1. As always, Carpinteria Seal Watch welcomes new volunteers, who typically serve a weekly two-hour shift as docents and observe harbor seal behavior. It’s a great way to serve the community and enjoy a bit of time outdoors.

Volunteers recorded 659 people in the overlook Jan. 1–4 braving the rain and mud. Other than locals, people came from Finland, Korea, India, Germany, Utah, Minnesota, New Mexico, Florida, Washington, Ohio, Illinois, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado.

Thinking about improving your physical and mental health in 2026? Well, I have a fantastically fun way to do it: go out and get yourself a pet. That’s right — our furry, fuzzy, scaly, or feathered friends are genuinely good for us.

The University of California, Davis reports that over 60% of dog owners get the recommended weekly amount of exercise. That means 75 minutes of vigorous activity or 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. They don’t need a fancy watch or ring to stay motivated — it’s all at the end of a leash.

Pets are also great for your heart, and not ust because they fill it with love. It’s been proven that simply being around animals can significantly improve blood pressure. Those of us lucky enough to have a little friend waiting at home typically have a lower resting blood pressure than people who don’t own pets. So go ahead and ring in the New Year with a new best friend. Your health will thank you.

Educate: Fabulous Fondue

“It’s not just fondue — it’s ‘heck yes I do!’” I mean, let’s think about this: dipping small pieces of bread into a hot, molten bowl of bubbling, gooey cheese.

This has long been a family favorite of ours, something we always enjoyed to help ring in the New Year. At some point, someone tried to throw vegetables into the mix, but they were consistently left behind on the plate like the fourth-grade runt when it comes to picking teams for dodgeball. Fondue on New Year’s Eve is something that will forever hold a special place in my heart — and my tummy.

According to the Wisconsin Cheese website (yes, I hang out there), this delicious mi ture of cheese, wine and our became popular in the 1800s in the French and Swiss Alps. The name originates from the French word meaning “to melt,” which feels pretty perfect. So take January’s chilly air as the perfect excuse to let a small piece of bread take the plunge into a pool of cheese — and celebrate 2026.

A communication specialist whose heart lies in storytelling, Jena has a knack for bringing groups together and building understanding through programming. She currently serves as the community services program coordinator assigned to AgeWell for the city of Carpinteria and is a member of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District Board of Directors. Musical Fantasy Tour returns to Carpinteria Community Library

The Santa Barbara Community Early Music Ensemble will perform its Musical Fantasy Tour — originally scheduled for November 2025 before being canceled due to heavy rainfall — at the Carpinteria Community Library on Saturday, Jan. 24.

The Musical Fantasy Tour explores the connections between modern fantasy literature and medieval and Renaissance music. The tour was originally performed for the Camarillo Public Library’s Family Renaissance Fair, held in August 2025. The performance analyzes tropes in modern stories and connects them to the Middle Ages, while also demonstrating instruments invented during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

The instruments, according to the ensemble’s Director Katherine Saxon, include a consort of recorders; a viola da gamba, a bowed and fretted string instrument with six strings and frets; a crumhorn, or a crumpled horn; and a sackbut, which is similar to a trombone.

The Musical Fantasy Tour will be performed at the Carpinteria Community Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave., at 3 p.m. The event is free, though donations are accepted.

Arts center volunteer appreciation party set for Saturday

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center will host an appreciation party for its many volunteers on Saturday, Jan. 10, 3–5 p.m. at the arts center, located at 865 Linden Ave. The event will include a gratitude presentation, line dancing lessons and live music. The party will also serve as an opportunity for potential volunteers to learn more about how to connect with the arts center. Those interested in attending the event may RSVP by emailing the arts center’s Events Coordinator Erynn Escalante at erynn@carpinteriaartscenter.org.

Rubenstein Chan hosts abstract artists in new exhibition

The Rubenstein Chan Contemporary Art Gallery will host an exhibition, “Held in Motion: Meditative Practices in Contemporary Abstraction and Illustration,” featuring the works of artists Clara Berta and Chenhung Chen.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Jan. 17, 2–5 p.m. at the gallery, “Circle of Life” by Clara Berta located at 410 Palm Ave., Unit B3.

Berta, from Laguna Beach, creates large-scale pieces that are constructed through a layering process. “My process is one of intuition, clearing the mind of preconceived notions of the final image while I work and allowing my thoughts and emotions to guide my movements,” Berta said in a press release for the exhibit. “I add layer upon layer until I reach a compositional harmony between color, form, and negative space.”

One of Berta’s pieces, “Island,” which will be in the upcoming exhibit, was featured in the Ray-Ban Meta ad for Super Bowl 59.

Chen, a Taiwanese-American artist, will have work from her 2020 “Vision” series, which was created during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her work includes collage and mixed-media drawings, which were inspired by the “National Audubon Society Guide to Birds.”

“Rooted in the belief of the universal nature of human beings and drawing from my connections with the urban environment and ancient craft traditions, my work negotiates spaces of cultural, environmental, psychological, and temporal change,” Chen said in a press release. “By using an array of commonplace objects, my art seeks to discover the link between one’s personal narrative and our collective humanity.”

The exhibition will be on display at the Rubenstein Chan Contemporary Art Gallery from Jan. 17 to March 1.

The otary Club of Carpinteria Morning will host two sessions of a free Advance Care lanning workshop, in collaboration with Get It one Santa Barbara, on Jan. 21 and Jan. 2 , :30 p.m., at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club, located at 105 allecito oad.

The workshop will guide participants through an advance directive, a legal document that ensures an individual’s healthcare wishes are known and respected if the individual is unable to speak for themselves. The workshop will include trained volunteers providing one-on-one support, and a free notary will be present to legalize the document.

Suzie Schneider, community service chair for the club, said she realized the need for the workshop after losing her father.

“This past June, my dad passed away.

While nothing prepares you emotionally for losing a parent, I am deeply grateful for the open and honest conversations we had before he became ill,” Schneider said.

“He shared his wishes for his care, and because of that, our final weeks with him were not filled with uncertainty or difficult decisions. Instead, we were able to simply be with him — present, peaceful, and focused on precious time together.”

Stop waiting to feel ready

WELLNESS WARRIOR LEAH HARDING Humans love the idea of being ready.

It feels safe. Clean. Like there’s a perfect version of us waiting just around the corner, one that finally has the time, energy and motivation to start. But that version never actually shows up.

Readiness isn’t something that appears before you begin. It’s something that builds because you begin. Confidence doesn’t magically land in your lap one day. It grows every time you do the thing you said you’d do, even when you don’t feel like it — especially when you don’t feel like it.

If you keep waiting to feel ready, you’ll be waiting forever. There will always be a reason to push it off until ne t week. But “ne t week” turns into ne t month, and suddenly, nothing’s changed.

Incoming truth bomb: You don’t need to be ready, you just need to be willing.

Here are five truths about readiness that might shift how you think about it.

You don’t have to believe in yourself first

You need proof. Motivation and confidence come after you start, not before.

It comes from seeing yourself follow through. The first time you do what you said you would, even in a small way, your brain takes note: “Oh, we actually do this now.” o that often enough, and belief becomes the natural outcome.

Start small. Keep a promise you can’t wiggle out of. Go for a 10-minute walk after dinner. Prep one real meal a week. rink a full glass of water before your coffee. When you do that, you build evidence that you follow through, and that’s where belief starts. Not from motivation, but from repetition.

Motivation isn’t the goal

It’s not meant to be a constant state.

Motivation is an emotion, and emotions uctuate. ou’ll feel inspired sometimes and totally uninterested other times.

That’s normal. What matters is your system. Build a routine that doesn’t care how motivated you feel, and make the path of least resistance the one that moves you forward.

Create a plan that works even on your worst days. If your full workout sounds miserable, do a five-minute movement burst. If cooking dinner feels impossible, throw something together that’s just “good enough.” Tiny decisions matter.

They keep you connected to your goal when everything else feels like too much.

Fear doesn’t mean stop

We tend to think fear is a red ag, but half the time, it’s just a sign that something matters to you. Fear and e citement feel almost identical. Your brain just labels it as one or the other.

When you catch yourself hesitating,

If you keep waiting to feel ready, you’ll be waiting forever.

There will always be a reason to p sh it o until next week. But “next week” turns into next month, and suddenly, nothing’s changed.

check in. Are you actually unsafe, or are you just uncomfortable? Most of the time, it’s the second one. You don’t have to get rid of the fear. You just have to move through it instead of waiting for it to disappear.

No one feels graceful when they start something new. The first few weeks of any change are awkward, inconsistent and uncomfortable. That doesn’t mean it’s not working. It means you’re rewiring old patterns and beliefs and turning them into habits.

Most people quit right before things start to click because they mistake “hard” for “wrong.” But awkward is part of the process. Once you push through that friction, the thing that felt forced starts to feel normal. That’s when it gets easier.

The perfect time doesn’t exist

There’s never going to be a magical stretch of calm where everything lines up perfectly. Real life doesn’t work that way. The dog gets sick. Work gets chaotic.

Someone needs you. Something breaks.

If you can only make progress when life is calm, you’ll be starting over every few months. The goal isn’t to find a perfect window; it’s to learn how to make small progress in the middle of the chaos.

That’s how consistency sticks.

Feeling ready isn’t a real step. oing something, even a tiny something, is. You build readiness by acting before you feel confident, not the other way around.

So if you’ve been circling the same goal, waiting for the perfect moment to start, this is your sign. It’s not about being ready. It’s about being honest enough to begin.

The Great Depression lemon

In the early days of the California Fruit Growers Exchange (CFGE, i.e., Sunkist), a perhaps apocryphal story tells that lemon growers were charged a higher fee than their orange growing counterparts for advertising. Oranges were the stars of the citrus industry, easy to peel and eat. The CFGE could teach the world to drink orange juice through the Drink an Orange campaign circa 1915, but what about the lemon? The story goes that the advertising agency asked lemon growers, “Have you ever tried to sell a lemon?”

The lemon growers were probably not amused by this query. We have a lemon law for automobiles, and a bad movie is described as a lemon, so maybe there is truth to it. But, things turned around for the lemon during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and this was a good thing for Carpinteria.

The lemon industry reached its apex in the ‘30s and ‘40s. Carpinteria farmers of the era remember the good economic times brought on by the lemon. In an interview, George Bliss Jr. said, “In Carpinteria, we did not suffer the harsh conditions brought on by the Great Depression.” This apparently did not stop some farmers from taking advantage of the situation by paying lower wages to their employees. People needed work!

Lawrie Bailard contended that the Bailard Ranch always paid their employees “lemon wages” and never “Depression wages.” It is in this environment that Dust Bowl families descended into Carpinteria — think “Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck — competing with Mexican labor in the fields and packinghouses. While the Hubbard/Carpinteria Lemon Association stuck largely with its Mexican work force, the Carpinteria Mutual Citrus Association added a Dust Bowl one. What was the allure of the once scorned lemon during the Great Depression?

To be fair, lemons were highly valued during the California Gold Rush years of the 1850s. They kept scurvy away from the miners, selling for an incredible $1 apiece in the gold fields A 1 lemon, really? Lemon growing pioneers like William Wolfskill of Los Angeles and the Del Valle family of the Rancho Camulos in what is now Ventura County made a bonanza marketing them from southern to northern California. Health benefits aside, the lemon had great value for 1930s Depression-era cash-strapped families, as well.

Unlike sweet oranges, lemons were much cheaper to buy and a source of multiple uses. There was the pitcher of lemonade, of course, that could stretch out juice much farther than the orange. The

In Carpinteria, farmers were preparing for the next great cash crop while in the middle of the lemon boom. They were trained and ready to phase out the lemon when its time came, or the land needed replenishing by switching out one crop for another. The avocado had been waiting in the wings for a long time. The fruit had been cultivated in Carpinteria as the “alligator pear” in the previous century, but had not been successful commercially.

But, the times were changing.

Today, Carpinterians celebrate the alligator pear annually at the Carpinteria Avocado Festival, and again we are forced to ask, what about the lemon? In Carpinteria, the sour fruit that meant so much to the alley in the first half of the twentieth century seems to be largely forgotten culturally, just as the lima bean and walnut were forgotten after the rise of the lemon. Nearby, however, Goleta continues to honor the lemon at its annual Goleta Lemon Festival.

I admit, I’ve followed them for many countless hours up steep canyons, over rolling hillsides, into trees, stumbling through dry arroyos, sweeping marine terraces and over cobbled beaches. Their habitat is diverse, but so is their omnivorous diet, and lately island foxes have revealed just how diverse their menu is.

This year’s pups in lower Scorpion Canyon on Santa Cruz Island were especially active. Two young male pups were in constant movement, ripping up and down hillsides at a frenetic pace. I tried to keep up, but more times than not I’d lose track of those four-pound blurs of cinnamon and silver. My best chance of keeping pace was when something captured their fascination. It’s not just mice that they forage for. Reptiles, birds, insects, berries, invertebrates on the beach and scavenging seabird carcasses are also part of their diet.

At any point during any given day, food is on their mind. They can be roughhousing nonstop, but a potential meal trumps everything. They go from manzanita berries to a cranky southern alligator lizard in a blink. The smallest fox species in North America travels unencumbered across the Channel Islands National Park.

And when pups are active, their parents, mostly the father, bring food to the pups throughout the day. I’ve seen island fox dads bring mice, fish, lizards, and birds to pups. If the pups were out and about, the dad will bury the bounty for safe keeping until they return.

Their territories are fiercely guarded by the parents. They won’t put up with interlopers, and most of those only penetrate the periphery of those boundaries before the parents chase them out. Parents patrolling territories are not kind to inter-

A juicy Jerusalem cricket for this inquisitive island fox pup. lopers, and if there is con ict, sometimes the fight is to the death. Territory, food sources and the well-being of the pups are all priorities within their boundaries.

Potato bugs

Watching an island fox become aware of potential food is a gift. They hold their heads high into the wind and sniff.

They have a powerful sense of smell, following scents through the coastal sage scrub, giant coreopsis, island buckwheat and island morning glory where prey is well concealed.

Jerusalem crickets, otherwise known as potato bugs, are nocturnal and burrow into the undergrowth and the soft, damp earth. However, they can get dug up easily by a curious island fox pup during the day. I followed a three-month-old pup late last summer underneath the old fig trees leftover from the ranching era. The ground beneath the fallen leaves was moist, and the young island fox pup was rooting up the leaves, something had its attention.

Being young, pups tend to play with their freshly caught food before consumption. Once the island fox pup exposed the Jerusalem cricket, I laid down on

the ground across from the pup. The beleaguered cricket was at the mercy of the pup’s pats and swats. The look on the face of the pup was priceless, one of fascination and dominance. Finally, the pup grew tired of torturing the hapless cricket. It was time for consumption. It sounded a lot worse than it looked, but at least it was quick, and then the foraging and play time continued.

They slither on Santa Cruz Island

There are snakes on Santa Cruz Island, but both species are nonvenomous. There are island gopher snakes and yellow-bellied racers, and both species are shy and elusive. In my 30 years paddling around the islands, I’ve seen both species a combined seven times — maybe. And both species are docile.

I’ve rescued two gopher snakes out of the ocean, both times while leading kayak tours. One simply fell off a sheer cliff. I pulled it out of the water. It sat on the bow of my kayak, and I let it go at the base of a cliff. The other snake was caught by two ravens. They ew it over to a cliff and landed on it at an awkward angle. The footing was precarious, and they dropped the snake into the water as I exited a sea cave. I nabbed the snake and set it on my boat, but it desired another boat and swam over to a kayak where a young Chumash boy was paddling. It felt appropriate considering the Chumash lived across the entire northern chain for

thousands of years. The snake gently slithered behind him, seeking warmth between him and the seat. I told the boy to give the snake some room. We beached our kayaks, where I had the boy carry the gopher snake into the coyote bush to release the snake. That was a good day.

Of the seven times I’ve seen snakes on Santa Cruz Island, two of those occasions were with island foxes catching unlucky snakes. They quickly became play toys, rag dolled until they were completely broken. Last November was one of those occasions. The fox’s snout pointed upward, following the scent of the snake into a tangled throng of island morning glory and coyote bush. However, I was thinking about a mouse at first. They are much more numerous, and snakes are very secretive, but when the island fox ung the snake out of the island ora, it was hopeless for the serpent. Out in the open, the island fox whipped it around until it was dead.

Afterwards, the island fox repeatedly rolled and rubbed itself on the lifeless snake. This went on for several minutes.

And then it picked up the snake, carrying it into the adjacent brush, slinking away like a snake.

Warriors basketball opens 2026 with league losses

Carpinteria boys basketball was back on the hardwood after the holiday break with two league matchups in early January.

But the Warriors suffered losses in both games, dropping Carpinteria’s season record to 3-13 and 0-3 against Citrus Coast League opponents.

Carpinteria nearly earned the win against Hueneme on Jan. 3, with both teams battling in a tightly contested matchup that ended with Hueneme holding on for a two-point win 46-44.

The Warriors’ offense moved the ball around with much success throughout the game, and Carpinteria’s transition defense was much improved. At halftime, the Warriors trailed by only one point.

Carpinteria pulled away to build a 10-point lead in the third quarter, with balanced scoring on offense and powerful rebounding from Francisco Nova and Mason Brainerd.

But in the fourth quarter, the Warriors struggled at the foul line with eight missed free throws. As a team, Carpinteria made just six of 14 shots from the free throw line.

Hueneme came back to take the lead late in the game.

Carpinteria had one final opportunity with a possession in the last 20 seconds. But the Warriors turned the ball over, giving Hueneme the two-point win.

On Jan. 5, Carpinteria hosted Channel Islands for a league matchup — the fourth time these two teams have met this season, including preseason and tournament games.

In this game, the Warriors defense held up strong in the first half, holding the high-scoring Channel Islands Offense to 25 points.

But in the second half, Channel Islands put the pressure on Carpinteria, forcing turnovers and pulling away to build their lead. By the final buzzer, Channel Islands took the win, 51-33.

Senior guard Sammy Medel led the team in both scoring and assists against Channel Islands.

Carpinteria coach Terrell Griffin addressed the recent struggles in his post-game comments: “It has been a challenge this first season incorporating culture, but I am here for the long haul, the good and the bad. This program will continue to get better with the small steps.”

Carpinteria has two league matchups this week, with a road game against Santa Paula on Jan. 8 and a home game against Malibu on Jan. 10.

Carpinteria boys soccer adds to win streak

Warriors soccer won three straight heading into the winter break, and Carpinteria kept up its winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Fillmore in the first game back against Fillmore on Monday.

The recent rains forced the match to be relocated from its original location at Carpinteria High School — where the grass was still saturated from the storm — across town to the artificial turf at Meldman Field at Cate School.

Carpinteria’s Adrian Levinson was the difference in the win, scoring the only goal of the match in the first 15 minutes when he beat Fillmore’s goalkeeper and knocked a shot into the back of the net.

Both teams battled for the remainder of the game, though neither would score and Carpinteria went on to take the win 1-0. Carpinteria coach Edgar Mendoza credited the team’s defense and goaltender Drew Filippini for turning in the team’s third shutout of the year.

“I am really proud of my boys today,” Mendoza said.

“We met our goal by starting off the year right with a win. They played strong and with a lot of organization.”

With the win, Carpinteria boys soccer has now won four in a row, including back-to-back Citrus Coast League victories. The Warriors will play two league matches this week, against Channel Islands and Santa Paula.

Warriors girls basketball drops game to Santa Ynez

Carpinteria girls basketball was back in action after a break of more than three weeks, with the Warriors’ first game of the new year against Santa nez on Monday.

The Warriors squad started out strong, pushing the pace and taking a one-point lead after the first quarter, led by senior Jamaica Cook with five early points.

In the beginning of the second quarter, Carpinteria e tended its lead to four points with a deep three-pointer from senior Charlotte Cooney.

After that moment, the momentum shifted, with Santa nez taking control and going on a big run to take a 3 -21 lead at halftime.

Carpinteria struggled to close the gap in the second half, as Santa nez took advantage in both the transition and rebounding game. Santa nez eventually pulled away to take the win by a final score of 5- 3.

“I have to do a better ob of preparing our team with the proper techniques of rebounding and running the oor in transition,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales.

“We will continue to work on it and will get better. I was happy with our effort and willingness to play hard all four periods.”

With the loss, Carpinteria girls basketball is now - overall this season. The Warriors are still undefeated against Citrus Coast League opponents, with a 2-0 record and a chance for a third league victory against Channel Islands this week.

Within the first days of June, a core number emerges of appro imately 0 0 remaining through July. In the traditional harbor seal life cycle, this is the period of mating adults and socializing uveniles with pups.

In August, numbers return to low 100s, coinciding with the molting period.

Many Save Our Seals SOS members were part of a city-formed advisory group. We observed, consulted with e perts and specialists and studied the literature to advise the city. Our recommendations have not yet been implemented but are still in the working stages. SOS members, the Save Our Seals committee of C A, monitor and count the seals throughout the year. We reach out with educating the public, encourage students to assist us, and we try to convince our city to value this rare natural resource.

As the seals become increasingly threatened by decommissioning, development, and tourists we hope you will continue to cherish and protect these peaceful animals.

One gift of the holidays is hope, the anticipation of new life in the harbor seal rookery. Many of the seals resting on the shore have an obviously rounded belly.

In the coming months a pup will be born.

Some of the seals are noticeably larger and longer and are likely males. The vast ma ority are smaller, lithe and lively. And a handful are the pups born last spring.

These last two groups will not reach reproductive age for a few or even several years. et each of these seals bears hope.

Harbor seals are evolutionarily adapted to forage at sea by night and sleep on shore by day. The seals do not travel more than 30 km to forage. As they follow the light of the brightest star, as seals are said to do, they hope to find their small section of beach to be free of people and dogs so they may rest.

Observations of the Carpinteria Harbor Seal ookery, one of only four rookeries from oint Conception to Me ico, have consistently shown the following pattern in recent years after prior counts of 300- 00. There are high counts in the low 100s-200s from January through June. ups, separately, vary in numbers from 0-55 while distinguishable from adults when they are similar in size to small adults they are counted as adults.

The highest seal counts are late April through May. The low 100s count carries into early

importance of long term and consistent monitoring.

At a small section of shoreline a rookery e ists where pups are born. ears of careful counting reveals that the harbor seals in this rookery are not surviving in high enough numbers to add to the colony. This small swath of beach happens to lie within the boundary of Carpinteria’s urisdiction, raising the question as to whether there is a role for the city in determining the fate of the seals.

We may have time to save the remaining seals if we are willing to relinquish the right to walk through their chosen home in e change for the long-term survival of the colony. The path to saving the colony is already established by international treaty, with the calling for increased intervention long before the decline in
