North Portsea Coastal Scheme Update
The North Portsea Coastal Scheme covers a total of 8.4 km of coastline from Tipner through to Milton and is being delivered in five phases. Phase 4 at Eastern Road commenced in autumn 2020 and covers 2.4km of seafront, from Kendall’s Wharf to Milton Common.
Progressing the Sea Defence
The North Portsea Coastal Scheme is progressing with the construction of the remaining 800m of wall (approx.) along Eastern Road, tying in with the finished sea defence at Milton Common. For this, we have been carrying out some piling work to help stabilise the wall, followed by concrete pours to complete the sea wall in sections. All of the sea wall will be textured facing the sea, to provide shelter and shade while retaining moisture, creating a suitable habitat for marine plants and animals to flourish. The texture is created using a special ecoformliner mould. This has been specifically designed for species present in Langstone Harbour by our team, in conjunction with the Universities of Glasgow and Bournemouth.

Tweet Tweet - Bird Island Naming Competition NOW OPEN!
Tweet Tweet - Bird Island Naming Competition NOW OPEN! We are asking you to get creative and help us find a name for the newly installed roost island at Eastern Road. Currently known as ‘bird island’, the site was included as one of the scheme’s environmental initiatives to ensure the birds can roost undisturbed but still be seen from a distance when passing by. The team constructed the island core out of crushed limestone and materials taken from the old sea wall at Eastern Road, before covering it with rock and shingle to mimic an organically occurring site. Take inspiration from the environment around Langstone Harbour, the history of Portsmouth or your personal experience. Entries are open to all Portsmouth residents or those with a link to Portsmouth from 1 July until midnight on 12 August 2023. Under 16s will need their parents’ permission to apply. All entries will be reviewed by a judging panel and the winning entry will be chosen by 19 August 2023.

Swanning Around
You already know, at the North Portsea Coastal Scheme we care about birds, but in early June we had a very special site visit from a Swan mother and her 4 little cygnets. With growing concern, our site team watched as the feathered family was trying to make their way over Eastern Road. Finally, the workmen decided to stand guard and stop traffic to help them safely over the road towards the verge and then escorted them back across Eastern Road and into our site entrance to guide them safely through our work area and to the water.
In FULL Bloom & Buzzing!
At the Harbourside Holiday Park we are now busy installing the new, wider, improved coastal path. The footpath will be 2.2m wide and has a Breedon gravel surface, laid using a mini-excavator, dump truck and roller. Once finished, it will tie in with the paths of the completed phases on either side. We are also starting on the next area of wildflowers here. More natural areas with new trees and wildflowers will be created where possible along the entire stretch. What that might look like once established can be seen further north at our previously completed phase 4a around Kendall’s Wharf. The wildflowers seeded there back in 2019 are now in full bloom and our first installed bee posts have already attracted first buzzing residents.
