From the President’s Desk

2023 has welcomed us generously with a mild winter and the promise of a blooming spring along the counties we serve on our Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland.

At Coastal Hospice, spring finds us with renewed energy, caring for our community, no matter how remote, how sick, or how costly, thanks to our committed staff and the continued support of our steadfast donors.

This commitment is opening new and creative ways to continue providing the excellent care that our diverse communities need. Thanks to new collaborations with the community, this year we are expanding programs (like the new children’s grief camp, Camp Chameleon, page 11), and adding new services, like our advance illness doulas, who are bringing more forms of care to our newly minted Coastal Care Navigators (formerly known as Compass); for more information about it, go to page 7.

Thanks to the work of our Advancement department, in collaboration with our community supporters, the 2022 Angel Appeal campaign was able to raise $275,577.97 that will help us continue caring for the uninsured or unable to pay, as well as providing those services not reimbursed by Medicare, like bereavement care and complementary therapies.

Our Board of Directors has been hard at work and recently had the opportunity of recognizing the commitment of two outstanding leaders: Michael Dunn and Andy Kim, who leave our Board of Directors. Mike Dunn served as member and Chairman of the board and Andy Kim as member and Vice Chair of the board, see photos on page 1. We are deeply grateful for their service and support of our mission as we welcome Morgan Fisher as Vice Chair and Dr. Simona Eng as Secretary of the Executive Board of Directors. We cannot thank you enough for your leadership!

Finally, I want to acknowledge the amazing work that every single department in our organization is doing. From facilities to our outstanding clinical teams, including all our wonderful office support staff, every single one of them bring their best every day. They are all the embodiment of devotion and when asked, most describe their work as a calling. I am extremely grateful they have answered that call, because that means we all share the same purpose and that every day, we are offering the best care to our patients and their families.

Coastal Hospice is in need of red, white, and blue blankets for the We Honor Veterans program. We will work on 8” squares to make these blankets throughout the year. Our group has some red, white, and blue yarn for you to use, but donations are always welcome! We will also be working on sewing “twiddles” onto twiddle muffs. Please bring a blunt yarn needle, — or a regular needle — and thread and be ready to sew!

Meet Toni Knobloch, Volunteer Services Manager

1. Share with us a little bit about yourself?

I grew up in Northern Maryland in Harford County and have lived in Maryland most of my life with some stints in San Diego, California and some time in Raleigh, North Carolina. While in North Carolina I met my soulmate Keith and we were married in 2014. We were inseparable and he was my best friend. However, in 2016 the trajectory of my life changed. My beloved grandmother passed away and shortly after that my husband Keith passed away suddenly at the age of 38. This ultimately altered the course of my life and in my grief I found a renewed purpose in helping those experiencing death and grief. I wanted to take the painful experience I went through and turn it into a force of good to create more help than hurt and honor Keith’s memory.

I began volunteering for a wonderful nonprofit called Soaring Spirits whose focus is providing support for the widowed community. With a heart for people, especially those who are hurting, I find my greatest fulfillment in volunteering and supporting other volunteers. During my time presenting workshops and volunteering as a social group leader in my area, I returned to school and received a Bachelor in Christian studies. I’m close to finishing my Master of Science in Thanatology which is the study of Death, Dying, and Grief. In my spare time I enjoy volunteering, writing, singing, and spending time with my two dogs and a cat. I also enjoy spending time with my nieces, Cassie and Charlie. They are intelligent, beautiful young ladies who are full of wit and humor and I feel so blessed to live so close to them!

Our volunteers are gifted and compassionate and it is my belief that they are the beating heart of this organization.

3. What do you like most about living in this area?

I love the people here because they are kind and devoted to their communities. I love to watch people rally around each other to help those in need and I get a clear picture of that, having the benefit of working at Coastal Hospice. The people here are simply fantastic! I also enjoy living so close to the Ocean as that has always been my happy place.

4. What are your plans for the Volunteer Department?

2. What compelled you to join Coastal Hospice and what do you love most about your job?

When I began my Master’s degree, Coastal Hospice became my ultimate goal. I saw what hospice did for my grandmother in her final days and the dignity and positivity they returned to her. Seeing the sort of love, care, and compassion that Coastal Hospice brings to those who are transitioning, along with their families is incredible. I wanted to be a part of the beauty and peace they create and the volunteers are a huge part of that! I absolutely adore working with the volunteers

I plan to onboard more volunteers to help support our volunteer program. My intentions are to offer more holistic approaches by adding Aromatherapy Specialists, Sound Healers, Reiki Practitioners, and Meditation Specialists, and provide training for our already stunning team of volunteers. Providing more options for peace and care of patients and families during their most difficult time is my ultimate goal. We will also be adding some licensed beauticians to our team so patients can have someone come and provide a haircut or manicure if they wish. Such simple things can return a sense of self and normalcy to those we serve. I also plan to set up a volunteer mentoring program so that our more experienced volunteers can provide support and guidance for those new to Coastal Hospice Volunteer services. I invite anyone with a heart for people and service to reach out about joining our team! I may be biased, but you couldn’t ask for a better team to volunteer alongside.

Providing more options for peace and care of patients and families during

Our Holiday Run Was Another Huge Success This Year!

This couldn’t have happened without the help and planning of our Coastal Hospice Staff, gathering, organizing, and scheduling details. In addition, the commitment and willingness of our Coastal Hospice Volunteers delivering to 245 patients and families from Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties. And to our community members, partners, and donors that played a key role behind the scenes.

Our poinsettias were purchased from Parkside High School greenhouse in Salisbury, MD. They always provide beautiful and healthy plants, and kindly give us a few extra. The poinsettia purchase is funded by donations from the Quota Club of Salisbury, the Democratic Women’s Society of Ocean Pines, and our Coastal Hospice donors.

We cannot forget the generous donation of nonperishable food and canned goods from our Holiday Food Drive. Thank you to our Coastal Hospice Staff and a hefty donation of items from BrightStar Care Salisbury. This allowed us to provide 17 Holiday Meal Kit baskets for our patients and families.

Dignity Bibs for Our Patients at Stansell House

Wewere fortunate enough to see what an army it takes to produce 100 “Dignity Bibs” for our Coastal Hospice patients at the Macky & Pam Stansell House.

Quilters by the Sea Guild of Ocean Pines Maryland dedicated their volunteer day to the request made by Maggie Miller, Coastal Hospice Volunteer and Lead of the Coastal Hospice Knitting and Crochet Group. “She asked if we would be willing to help make patient feeding protectors for their patients. Our response — YES WE CAN!” said, Jacqui Santangelo, Quilters by the Sea Guild President. Together, these organized, motivated, cheerful, and talented volunteers got the job done and fast!

Shout out to local community members and volunteers from both groups who donated hand towels to make this a successful collaboration. The amazing organizational skills by Stephanie Dilworth and JoAnne Donnelly who delved into the huge donation of fabric inventory to match the right fabric with the hand towels to make kits ready to go, and to Robin Mower, Guilders Vice President for coming up with the most productive way to assemble the Dignity Bibs. Every station was clearly marked with instructions for the dedicated volunteers to get to work!

What are dignity bibs? A dignity big is a patient feeding protector made out of a terry cloth hand towel, sewn to a fabric yoke and secured around the patient’s neck with a snap or with Velcro. They are used by the staff at Coastal Hospice to allow patients the ability to feed themselves, regardless of their abilities, while protecting the patient’s clothes from food spills. It’s important to allow patients to be as independent as possible while they perform activities of daily living and these dignity bibs do the trick!

Our volunteers visit with patients and their families in their own homes or at a facility, and offer the support they need by running errands, providing companionship, fixing lunch, or giving caregivers a much-needed break.

Thrift Shop

Our Thrift Shop in Berlin supports the Macky & Pam Stansell House. Our volunteers assist customers, create displays, operate the cash register, or sort and price donations.

Grief Support

Part of our mission is to continue to support families after their loved one has passed. Our volunteers make phone calls, prepare mailings and assist with our grief support group meetings.

Our veteran volunteers visit our veteran patients and honor them for their service.

Journey Connections

Our Compass Program is now Coastal Care Navigators

Coastal Hospice understands that some do not meet the hospice admission criteria, but is still compassionate toward the struggle that many face when dealing with a serious illness. It can be tough to discover that the ability to complete simple tasks, like taking a few steps, standing from a seated position or preparing a modest lunch, are becoming increasingly difficult to complete. Even more so, when you have to do it alone.

The stories of these struggles are not new to us, so not only do we know what is available to support, we know how to navigate the processes. Nevertheless, we treat your story, your struggle, with the value and attention that it deserves. We want to take the time to hear your struggle from you. In the past, we have connected families to resources that offer medical equipment, adult day care, meal deliveries, transportation, and help with supplies to name a few.

Looking into the future, we are introducing the role of the Advanced Illness Doula! At the core, the care provided by the Advanced Illness Doula, is offering non-medical and non-judgmental support and guidance, to individuals and families through times of critical and transformative life change. Our doulas will provide an expert presence to nurture, inform, support, guide, empower, comfort, and work with other caregivers and members of the care team.

We saw an opportunity to take what Coastal Hospice currently offers as support for families in this struggle and enhance it! Our Compass program is now COASTAL CARE NAVIGATORS!

Our Advance Illness Doulas will provide an expert presence to nurture, inform, support, guide, empower, comfort, and work with other caregivers and members of the care team.

When you enroll into the Coastal Care Navigators Program, you will be assigned a Care Navigator who understands the challenges that complications from your illness might bring and is connected to the resources that can help ease some of that stress for you and your family. A Care Navigator will make calls and visits to your home, not only to offer resource support, but companionship as well.

Grief Support Groups

We offer in-person and online 6-Week Bereavement Support Groups throughout the year. The purpose of these support groups is to provide an atmosphere of trust and acceptance in which participants may freely share their experiences, struggles, feelings, and concerns as well as their strengths, solutions, and joys. The groups will encourage participants to create friendships and network with each other.

These activities are offered at no cost to any adult who has experienced the death of a loved one, even if they were not a patient of Coastal Hospice. One-on-one phone support or in-person meeting available by request.

Grief Support Groups Tailored to Our Community

Atsome point in our lives, all of us experience grief. Our experience with grief is unique to each individual. Some aspects that might impact our grief response are bereaved’s personality, expectations, worldview, or belief system just to mention a few. However, one important aspect of our grief response is the unique relationship we had with the deceased loved one.

At Coastal Hospice, we realize the importance of tailoring the support groups to the kind of loss the person is experiencing. For example, if someone loses a spouse, it is very different than losing an adult child. Often, we hear comments like, “it’s not the same losing my husband than losing my son” and/or “it’s just not the way it is supposed to be, I was supposed to go first.” In both statements, we see that the relationship with each loved one was different. Likewise, our expectations about death differ in that the natural way in which life is supposed to go is that the older people die first. With that in mind, we realized that there was a great need for people to connect with others who had experienced similar losses. In bringing people together, the hope is that they can support one another in their grief journey.

Probably, you have heard the phrase “you don’t know what it’s like until you walk in someone else’s shoes.” I find that statement very true, especially in grief and loss. In connecting with others who have gone through similar experiences, people realize that they are not alone, that there are other people on the journey of grief who are willing to walk beside each other on that path. In doing so, the hope is that connecting with each other will assist in the healing process.

In our grief response, another aspect to consider is the type of death, like if the death was expected, unexpected, or death by suicide. If the death was expected, people might have already experienced what is known as “anticipatory grief,” which means that people possibly started grieving prior to physical death. If death was unexpected, there might be an element of shock. If our loved one committed suicide, there is another layer added to our grief. In loss by suicide, grief may be intense and complicated due to feelings of guilt, shame, and blame.

When we talk about grief, we immediately think about the death of a person. However, keep in mind that there are other types of losses, like: a job, move to a new place, divorce, pet, physical health, independence, faith, and financial security just to mention a few. Someone who is grieving the death of a loved one may be experiencing other losses as well, which further complicates the grieving process.

All losses are unique. Our response to grief and loss is dependent on the circumstances around the death and our personal response to it. In distinguishing each support group, our hope is to attend to the specific needs of the community, offering hope, support, and assisting in the healing process.

All losses are unique. In bringing people together, the hope is that they can support one another in their grief journey.

Youth & Grief

Coastal Hospice has been a vital part of supporting grief and community crisis for many students within our region. We have offered support groups specifically designed to help children and adolescents cope with their grief. These groups are an effective way for school-age children to process their grief together. Children don't want to be different from their peers and in a group setting they discover they are not alone.

These past months we had the opportunity of offering support at the Dorchester Career Technology Center, Stephen Decatur High School, and at Maces Lane Middle School in Dorchester County. For more information or to learn how to bring support to your school, please call our Bereavement Department. Our programs are offered at no cost, thanks to the support of our community.

Worcester County Memorial Gathering

It was an honor for Coastal Hospice to support so many families during our Worcester County Memorial Gathering in November 2022. An invitation was sent throughout the county for those who experienced the loss of a loved

one to participate in this free event. There could not have been a more beautiful opportunity to honor the memory of a loved one, than that of the Atlantic Ocean waves crashing under the famed Ocean City Fishing Pier.

Adapting and mending is part of life and so is the support we offer to our community. This year we are making big changes to a program that benefits the youth and we have offered in collaboration with Salisbury University for many years: Camp Safe Harbor. We are thrilled to announce the evolution of the camp and to introduce: CAMP CHAMELEON!

Camp Chameleon is a 4-day summer day camp open to children ages 6 to 12, who have experienced a primary loss in their life, like the death of a parent, grandparent, sibling or other closely connected person. Camp Chameleon is hosted through a partnership between Coastal Hospice and The Personal Wellness Center, in Salisbury, MD.

The camp offers a safe place for these children to express their grief, to explore the many emotions that accompany the death of someone close, and to learn age-appropriate coping skills that will assist them on their grief journey. This year we are encouraging families to participate during the last portion of the camp day. More information upon registration.

Camp Chameleon begins with a family event on Monday evening, June 26, 2022 and is followed by three days (June 27-29) filled with fun and activities for the campers. Lunch provided daily! Each child will receive a t-shirt, water bottle, drawstring tote bag, and supplies for all activities.

Growing to Provide More Education to Healthcare Professionals

Today, little over a year later, our programs have reached more than 1,300 people in and beyond our community, and thanks to key collaborations with partners, we have been able to provide accredited education to healthcare professionals in the region. We are over the moon with these results and they inspire us to bring even more valuable education where is needed.

As conditions become safer for our attendees, we are growing our education offerings and this year will provide in-person programs, expanding the opportunities for healthcare professionals to acquire state-of-the-art education in End-of-Life care, directly from our subject-matter experts. On that note, I am happy to announce our new Community Education and Caregiver Academy Manager: Lauren King. Lauren joined our organization as a Provider Relations Liaison and she has been collaborating with the Caregiver Academy for a while now. Her ample knowledge of the communities we serve and her drive for quality care will take the Caregiver Academy to new frontiers! More to come!

In February, in recognition of Black History Month, we had an outstanding panel presenting “Black History and Healthcare: Past, Present, and Future.” Dr. Mark L. Bowen, Ed.D., SHRM-IWCS; Alvin Harmon, CBCP, CEOLD; Rev. Gary Stewart, M.Div.; and Lakishia Hardy, RN presented a lively discussion on the history of racial disparities in our healthcare industry, and the initiatives that organizations like Coastal Hospice are developing to support the Black Community when facing life-limiting illnesses.

Hospice Spiritual Counselors: Witnesses of Hope

Whatdoes a patient or family do when hope is no longer defined by cure? What does hope look like when the risk of another course of treatment outweighs the benefit or they learn that being disease-free is no longer a realistic outcome?

For hospice patients and their families hope is not lost, rather it is redefined. And hospice spiritual counselors experience the sacred privilege of being witnesses of that hope.

As spiritual counselors journey with patients and families, making space for them to share their stories and experiences, we are privileged to share in, or hear the recounting of, sacred moments. These moments include times when families come together to celebrate their love or reconcile their differences. Often families gather and spend time laughing and sharing memories. Some sit quietly, with one who can no longer talk with them, and reflect on special times spent together. Sometimes patients or families need support in finding a way to let go of guilt or brokenness that they no longer have an ability to resolve. Peace comes in accepting what cannot be changed about the past. Others experience a great sense of purpose in making sure that tasks, which will support their loved ones, are accomplished…an advance directive is completed, funeral planning is done, an obituary is written, finances are put in order.

Hospice spiritual counselors, occasionally experience the blessing of sharing in a baptism or a wedding for a patient or a family member, who expedites a special event so that their dying loved one can be in attendance. We get invited, or even help to host birthday parties or graduation celebrations. We sometimes get the privilege of seeing a patient hold their new grandchild for the first time…a moment they have been praying to experience before death occurs.

Often we are asked, “How can you do this sad work every day?” And, in response a hospice spiritual counselor will nearly always smile as they reflect on the beautiful, precious moments with patients and families that are filled with purpose and hope.

In her famous poem, Emily Dickinson writes “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul – and sings the tune without the words – and never stops at all.”

More often than not, our experiences with patients and families bear witness to that sense of hope. It is a hope that does not end, but rather takes on new meaning as one faces death with dignity and quality of life.

Part of their Journey

I am often asked how do you do your job? The assumption behind this question is that the work of a hospice chaplain/spiritual counselor must be so sad. And yes, I have the privilege to be with people for hard conversations and tearful goodbyes. What you might be surprised to know is that just as often I get to share in moments of joy and hope too.

Here are just a few examples. A 90-year-old hospice patient pulled up his pant leg to show me his super hero socks and requested the next time I visit that I must wear fun socks too. For my next visit, the nurse and I visited together and everyone smiled as we showed off our fun socks. This has become a regular ritual of everyone showing off their socks at each visit.

Hospice chaplains can do weddings! I gathered with a couple and their families and dogs in a living room and officiated their marriage. They had planned to get married and had never made the time. I was able to fulfill this goal for them in their own home.

We help celebrate special days. I have enjoyed many pieces of birthday cake with patients and families as we celebrate another year of life. I have eaten at the Chinese buffet with a patient and her Coastal Hospice team because she loved Chinese food and wanted to enjoy it with the people who helped care for her.

I have a patient who loves music and laughs each time I sing songs from the 50s and 60s with her. When she is done laughing at my singing, she sings along.

As a chaplain, I am welcomed into someone’s home and invited to be part of their journey. I consider it a privilege to celebrate the important and everyday moments of life along with our Coastal Hospice patients and families.

12 Simple Steps to Creating an Estate Plan

Thereare many decisions to make and complex tax laws to consider when creating a plan for your estate. How will you decide which person gets which assets? Who will care for your children? Once all the important questions have been answered, how do you put a plan into place that addresses all of your concerns?

By taking these 12 steps, you will be on the path to good financial planning, and, most importantly, peace of mind.

1. Create a will.

• A simple will can spell out who will get your property and who will raise your children if the need arises.

2. Consider using trusts.

• Trusts aren’t just for the wealthy.

• A simple living trust can minimize the involvement of the court system and the tax collector.

3. Think about your healthcare preferences.

• A living will or advanced health directive can spell out your preferences for medical treatment if you’re incapacitated or unconscious and can’t relay your wishes yourself.

4. Create a financial power of attorney.

• If you’re incapacitated, someone will need to have access to your finances and make financial decisions on your behalf.

• Pick someone who is financially savvy and whom you trust fully to be your financial power of attorney.

5. Check the beneficiaries on your accounts.

• Check your insurance policies and retirement accounts to ensure they designate the correct beneficiaries. Most states also allow brokerage accounts to list beneficiaries.

• File any necessary change forms if your beneficiary has changed since you first created the account.

• Some states allow you to list a beneficiary on your real estate deeds as well.

6. Protect your children.

• Designate someone to handle any assets and monies your children will inherit if they’re too young to manage the assets themselves.

7. Do you need life insurance?

• Life insurance isn’t necessary for everyone, but it is important for certain people.

• Consider your situation and consult an expert if needed.

8. Be aware of estate taxes.

• Estate taxes won’t affect most estates; they’re only an issue if your assets total over $11.7 million.

9. Plan for your funeral expenses.

• Funeral pre-payment plans have sometimes proven to be unreliable.

• Most banks have a payable-on death type of account that can be used to hold funds for funeral and related expenses.

• There are also insurance policies that exist for this purpose.

10. Protect your business interests.

• Put a plan in place for what will happen to your business at the time of your death.

• Will someone else run it? Will it be sold?

11. Make any other final arrangements.

• Do you wish to be buried or cremated? Will you donate your organs?

• Put all information regarding your final wishes in writing.

12. Store your documents and online credentials in an organized manner.

• Keep your documents, usernames, and passwords together in a lockbox or home safe.

• Avoid keeping documents your family could need right away in a safe deposit box at your bank as it

might be sealed upon your death, preventing your family from accessing it.

• If you own properties, make sure that you know where your deeds and mortgage documents are located. Joint ownership is common in real estate transfers and you want to be aware of who has an interest in your real estate when you write your will or trust.

• Make sure you choose a legacy contact and fill out any requisite forms if you have digital assets such as social media accounts, email, or an online business. Make sure your contact knows where to find your account passwords.

Steadfast Support from The Michael J. Strawley, Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament

Organizers of the Michael J. Strawley, Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament presented a check for $12,000 to Coastal Hospice for the support of charitable care at the Macky & Pam Stansell House in Ocean Pines, MD. The tournament has donated its proceeds to the organization since 2016, and the $12,000 raised in 2022 contributed to the total amount raised over the years to over $51,000.

The 7th Annual Michael J. Strawley, Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Coastal Hospice was held at the River Run Golf Club in Berlin, MD. Originally called the Bearded Clam Open, the tournament began in the early 1980s and was run by the late Michael J. Strawley, Sr., who then owned the Bearded Clam in Ocean City, MD.

This tournament is history in the making for our community. In 1995, Bearded Clam employee, Tommy Riggins passed away and the tournament was renamed the

The September 2016 tournament was renamed in his honor upon the passing of Michael J. Strawley, Sr. This year's tournament committee members are George McKelvie, Rick Cole, Richard Stone, Cindi Strawley, Rick Buccherri, and Steve Silverman.

After the presentation, the group shared how this tournament has evolved and the hard work that goes into the big day. George McKelvie remembers thinking, “When I first came in, I was hoping we could do 80 players, well … we did 136 or something!”

Richard Stone recounts, “I had one of the player’s wives come up to me during the Clam party and she said, do you think all these people realize how much work goes into this?”

We are thankful to everyone who has played a part on this wonderful event and for their continued support of Coastal Hospice’s mission.

We Honor Veterans Room Dedication

In honor of the veterans we have cared for throughout the years, a patient room at the Macky & Pam Stansell House has been dedicated as the We Honor Veterans Room. In a touching ceremony during the week of Veteran’s Day, we unveiled a plaque that honors donors and organizations making a donation of $5,000 or more, dedicating their support of this program.

We are thankful to American Legion Synepuxent Post 166 - Ocean City, American Legion Wicomico Post 64, Choptank Memorial VFW Post 7460, Crisfield American Legion Post 16, Eastside Memorial VFW Post 2996, In Memory of G. Douglas Juckett with love from, Dorothy Juckett & Family, Ocean City Lions Club, and Ocean Pines Platform Tennis Association, for their generous contribution.

The Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization together developed the We Honor Veterans program to empower hospices to meet the unique needs of veterans and their families. Coastal Hospice is a proud member of this national program. When a veteran comes into our care, he or she will receive a special visit that includes a personalized certificate, a patriotic blanket and, whenever possible, a salute from a uniformed military guard. Our staff is prepared to meet veteran’s unique needs. We can assist with enrollment of VA benefits and coordinate with VA or other healthcare organizations. On Veteran’s Day, we hold special honor ceremonies open to all veterans across our service area.

Honoring G. Douglas ‘Doug’ Juckett

Coastal Hospice had the opportunity to talk to Dorothy Juckett at the We Honor Veterans Room dedication ceremony at the Macky and Pam Stansell House, where her husband G. Douglas Juckett was being honored, among other donors and organizations. Their story is remarkable and during a follow-up phone interview, Mrs. Juckett shared with us her memories of the loving care and compassion that her husband received from Coastal Hospice.

“Coastal Hospice was so wonderful; I can’t tell you. I’d put them up against anyone. There is no one better than the Macky & Pam Stansell House. We had a friend whose wife had just been at Stansell House and they said ‘you can’t beat their service and compassion’. Doug had been other places in the community and once we moved him to Stansell House we knew it was the best decision.

As part of the Ocean City-Berlin Optimus Club, Doug had many friends that wanted to see him but couldn’t, because of COVID. I don’t know what made me think of this because I’ve never heard of it, but Coastal Hospice made it happen. My family and I organized a drive-by for Doug at the Macky & Pam Stansell House. I think me thinking of this idea must have been divine intervention.

Being a retired Anne Arundel County Police Officer, I called up the Anne Arundel County Police and they sent a car who led the procession form the St. John Neumann Catholic Church on Racetrack Rd, in Berlin all the way to the Stansell House. This procession included several other jurisdictions throughout Worcester County as well as an ambulance. Friends said every street was blocked because they wouldn’t stop the procession. To know that people care that much, is amazing.

I sat alongside Doug on the porch and all his friends and family looped through the roundabout at Stansell. My son counted and there was a total of 85 cars and there wasn't only 1 or 2 in a car, but sometimes 3 or 4 people per car. There is a video someplace that we have of that beautiful day.

Doug passed away seven days after this and he said to me every day, “Did you know I had that many friends? I didn’t know I had that many friends!”. He absolutely loved it and so did I. After the fact I thought, what a terrific sendoff for him. I’m so thankful he was able to spend his last 3 months next to heaven, cared by Coastal Hospice.”

Doug Juckett served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962. He retired in 1990 from the Anne Arundel County Police Department in Maryland, after 30 years of dedicated service. Juckett was an active member of the Ocean City-Berlin Optimist Club for 30 years and of American Legion Post 166 in Ocean City, Md. We are honored that we were able to care for him and his family, and his name is now honored in our We Honor Veterans Room at the Macky and Pam Stansell House.

The Gentle Handoff

On January 26th, our President & CEO, Monica Escalante and our Director of Bereavement Care, Volunteer Services, and Coastal Care Navigators, Alvin Harmon presented, “The Gentle Handoff” to the Delmarva Funeral Services Association. During the presentation our directors shared with members of the association how vital our collaboration is to provide the best possible care to our families. Funeral Directors in attendance received continuing education credits in conjunction with the presentation.

Proclamations

During the celebrations of Hospice Month, Coastal Hospice was recognized with proclamations from Worcester County and the Town of Berlin in Maryland.

Worcester County Government declared November 2022 as Coastal Hospice Month and Monica Escalante, President & CEO, was there to receive the proclamation alongside Lauren Blair, Community Relations & Development Manager and Lauren King, Community Education & Caregiver Academy Manager.

The Town of Berlin declared November 2022 as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. The proclamation presented by Mayor Zack Tyndall was accepted by Tina Warren, Thrift Shop Manager and Sharon Robinson, Volunteer Services Coordinator.

We are very grateful for our community’s recognition and for allowing us to continue caring for our patients and their families.

Coastal Hospice wishes staff members a Happy Retirement!

As they are off to new adventures, Kevin Ireland, Doris Ludicke, and Casandra Green share fond memories.

Kevin Ireland, Director of Facilities and Infrastructure

I grew up in Easton, graduated from Salisbury State College (now Salisbury University), worked for a Delaware bank for 18 years, married my wife, Liz in 1986, and raised two sons here, before working at Coastal Hospice and making ties to the community.

I was hired by Marion Keenan, Coastal Hospice’s first President as an Executive Assistant in 2002, which quickly morphed into being Project Manager for Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Facilities and Safety. My position went from Executive Assistant to Facilities Manager and then Director of Facilities. At one time I was responsible for Emergency and Safety, Facilities, IT, HIPAA, Thrift Shop, State reports, and procurement. A real spread out mix!!

I think that what I enjoy most about my job is knowing that the work I do supports the care of vulnerable hospice patients. I can’t care for the patients, but what I do, create, or improve helps with their care. I take pride in the immense diversity of my responsibilities.

One of my favorite memories was helping start Coastal Hospice at the Lake. It was exciting and very fulfilling. Opening the Thrift Shop was creative and a lot of laughs. Driving nurses and aides to patient’s houses in snow storms was always thrilling and challenging!! I had a few ask me if we were going to be alright and I’d say, “Relax, you’re with the Safety Officer!!”

I have always felt very proud seeing the care that nurses and aides gave to patients and how they dealt with family members. Driving them out in storms gave me a deeper, renewed desire to do my very best at my job by supporting them. I see that care at Stansell House and Coastal Hospice at the Lake and it helps me handle facility issues with my best effort. Trust me, clogged septic pumps, broken beds, leaking fire pumps, etc. aren’t exciting but getting them fixed means safer, better conditions for patients, families and staff.

Now that I am retiring, I am looking forward to fishing, hunting, and going on trips with my wife, Liz. We want to see the Northern Lights. Iceland and Scotland intrigue us. I love to be outdoors, so being on a river or creek and going to the ocean are always fun. I find solitude in the woods and enjoy my time there. Liz has taught me to be a better birder, so we will spend time going to various state parks and wildlife refuges.

I will miss the true professionals that I have developed relationships with, Dave Schwarten, Mark Nelson, and Hugh Livingston in IT and Telecommunications. The Deer’s Head Hospital staff that take care of Coastal Hospice at the Lake, the contractors that call me right back when Coastal Hospice is having a problem even on weekends, day or night, or holidays. Also, the Coastal Hospice staff that were patient and understanding when things weren’t working while we were working feverishly to fix it.

It has been an amazing journey, much better than I ever expected. Despite the frustrations of repairing and resolving things in an urgent timeframe, it stretched me and made me grow. I developed empathy. So it has been a mutually beneficial relationship in many ways.

Doris Ludicke, Music Therapist

Music Therapy is actually my third career! I have a nursing degree from Johns Hopkins University and worked as a nurse for over 50 years. My Master’s degree is in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola College (now Loyola University Maryland). Later in my life I returned to school to follow my passion, music. In 1996 I graduated from Shenandoah University Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music Therapy degree. In order to become board certified I completed a 6-month internship at Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville, Maryland.

I joined Coastal Hospice in August of 2004 because hospice care has always been dear to me. I first learned about the concept of hospice in a Death and Dying course I took in nursing school at Johns Hopkins University. I decided then, that I wanted to be involved in the hospice movement in the early 1980’s. I even did a month-long study at St. Christopher’s Hospice in England, which at that time was the gold standard of hospice care. When I moved to the Eastern Shore, I was able to work as a Music Therapist at Coastal Hospice.

Hospice patients can benefit in many ways and they can participate at whatever level they desire... No matter what level of consciousness a patient has, they are affected by music. Music can help ground hospice patients so they feel connected to their environment. Studies have shown that music, preferably live music, which can be moderated, can slow a rapid breathing pattern or pulse rate. Music has a unique way of connecting to the body and spirit. Patients may enjoy singing their favorite hymns or just listening.

One of my favorite memories of working with a hospice patient was an elderly woman who loved to drum! Every time I went to visit her, she couldn’t wait to get her hands on the drum and she never missed a beat! It was something she could also do with her family... Even when she became weaker and was in bed, she could still use a small hand drum or shake a tambourine. It was a unique experience for her and for me.

Although I am retiring from Music Therapy at Coastal Hospice, I am going to keep music in my life because it is my passion. I plan to do some substitute music teaching in the Worcester County school system. I will continue to enjoy playing my piano, flute, and harp and doing some drumming.

Casandra Green, Receptionist

I began my journey with Coastal Hospice in 2015 as a temp from a staffing firm. Originally, I was to stay for two months, but ended up staying for seven years. Coastal Hospice is an amazing organization and I have met so many wonderful people.

I am currently an usher at my church, and our main goal is to make everyone feel welcome by creating an atmosphere that says, “yes you are welcome.” Ushers are the first face you see and that first impression is so important. Being a receptionist is no different. It’s the first impression that counts. We must understand and remember that our clientele is someone’s loved one. I attended Strayer Business College some forty-six years ago and we were taught the old school way.

One of my favorite memories is of a wife who was looking for placement for her husband. She came for a tour of the Macky & Pam Stansell House. Before exiting through the door, she turned around and said “I know this is the place for my husband to spend his last days in peace, because of your show of kindness.” Another memory… I was recently on vacation and when I came back, one of the visitors said to me, “I missed you.” It is that first impression that speaks volumes for any company.

I am looking forward to retirement. My goal is to go back to college in 2023 to obtain my Master’s in Theology. I obtained my Associate Degree in Ministry at the age of 62, my Bachelor’s in Ministry at the age of 64 and I got married this past July. My main desire is to love God, for the bible said, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. (I Corinthians 2:9). I will truly miss all of my co-workers, especially my awesome boss, Dr. Mark Bowen, and the entire Human Resources team, and our lovely President & CEO, Monica Escalante.

Legacy Work

Memories

– Pictures. A Place. A Smell. An Image. A Sound. Things that sometimes although not tangible, can bring forth great comfort and solace to those left behind. It is a gift to others. Memories are things that one can create or develop, to leave to those that can remind them of who they were and how they want to be remembered. Every day we can make memories. Sometimes in the busy part of life or during the journey of hospice, we forget to stop and think about the memories our loved ones have made, or are making in their final journey.

In hospice, we have the opportunity to help those patients and/or families be involved in Legacy Work. As social workers, our primary goal is patient centered practice. We listen to our patients, we hold the hands of their loved ones, we walk beside them in their journey. It is truly a gift that our patients and families allow us to be a part of their journey – as sometimes it can be extremely challenging and personal.

Legacy Work allows a patient to actively participate in leaving special memories for their loved ones. This type of work isn’t about death and dying, but about life and living. It’s the act of sitting down and taking time to purposefully create something for the people you love and care about. In Legacy Work there are no rules, no restrictions or limitations. Sometime words can be hard to say, so leaving memories can take on lots of different variations.

Grief comes in stages, and not just after someone’s death. Most patients and families experience anticipatory grief. This type of grief occurs while our patients are still living. Participating in Legacy Work can be very therapeutic to address anticipatory grief. Children often process grief in a different manner than adults. Often times they are not able to express their feelings and thoughts in words. By involving children in Legacy Work, they can start to process changes that could be occurring right within their own household. This allows them to actively participate in a project that might not require them to express their feelings verbally, but still allow them to process their feelings therapeutically.

These are just some of the few Legacy Work ideas that our social workers have either helped a patient develop or offered as suggestions for them to complete on their own:

• Scrapbooks

• Recipes

• Video Montage

• Cards/Letters/Journaling

• Songs/Bible Verses

• Blanket/Quilt (scraps of clothing)

• Recording your Voice (reading a story for grandchildren to hear)

• Footprints/Handprints/Decorations (for parents, siblings)

• Planting a tree

Leaving a legacy gives your loved ones something to hold on to and something that can provide healing and comfort year after year.

Music Enhances Hope Through Connections

Haveyou ever heard a song and immediately were reminded of a significant event, family and friends or connection with deeply held thoughts, ideas or beliefs?

It could be the song you danced to at your wedding, a lullaby that was sung to you by your mother or a hymn that you sung at church. You hear it and are once again connected to that memory and feeling all the emotions that go along with it. Music has a way of doing that and music therapists have a way of creating a space where that can happen intentionally.

Music Therapy Helps with Reminiscence

A universal process that hospice patients and their loved ones engage in is reminiscing and evaluating one’s life, or engaging in life review. Music can assist in this process. Many people have songs that are connected to special life moments. Music can remind them of these memories and give patients a chance to connect with loved ones over shared memories and even make new memories over listening and making music together. It helps to not only connect with others but also to the patient’s personal sense of identity. Special songs can also be used to create legacy projects that families can hold close to their hearts as a continued connection with their loved one after they have passed.

Music Therapy and Spirituality

The thought of dying and leaving loved ones can create fear and anxiety. Perhaps there are unresolved issues or a fear about what happens after death. Patients may wonder about their standing with God or a higher being. They may worry about what happens to their loved ones when they are gone. Listening to and singing songs connected to their faith or spirituality can assist in increasing a sense of peace and hope. Participating in spiritual rituals, such as faith-based music, can create a sense of familiarity, continuity and comfort when faced with the unknown.

Music Therapists create opportunities for a hospice patient to maintain connections with their sense of self, with loved ones, and with their faith and/or spirituality. Patients receiving hospice and palliative care music therapy report less pain, anxiety, nausea, and feelings of depression. They also experience increased feelings of well-being, comfort, relaxation, spirituality, escape, and reflection.

Music plays an integral role throughout the lifetime. When we are first born, lullabies soothe us; in grade school, it teaches us; in our adult life, it marks milestones and in the process of dying, it connects us to ourselves, our loved ones, and our spiritual life.

Build trust

“The best way to take advantage of an older adult’s healthy years is to start building trust in the relationship now, and to make it a priority. Why? Because caregiving in hiking terms is classified as a “difficult” hike. It requires a great deal of energy, effort, and perseverance. In every step of your hike, trust is like quality hiking boots and trekking poles. It makes all the difference, especially when you hit steep inclines like tragedy or diseases. Trust makes all the difference when difficult decisions need to be made.

Trust, however, also takes time. And this is where we often fall short. We get in the routine of managing an elder’s physical care and forget to nurture that relationship.”

As I approach my 40th birthday in 2023, I realize I’ve spent my entire life watching people care for their loved ones. I grew up in a multigenerational household and witnessed my parents care for my Mama and Yeye (which means “paternal grandparents” in Cantonese”). Mama and Yeye were 68 and 71 when I was born; they died at 98 and 102). On top of my personal experience, I have spent my career in the senior living and hospice care field where again I’ve watched so many care for their loved ones. Years of observation have taught me one important lesson: The best care isn’t purchased with money or accessed by having the most credentialed doctors. Our loved ones get the best when they have a village of trusted people surrounding them. Being able to trust and have a village makes our loved ones feel secure. Safe. Loved.

Yet, reality begs to ask this question: What caregiver has the time to develop trust when there are long to-do lists, finances, and appointments to manage?

While the needs of our loved ones are numerous and overwhelming, a long-term strategy to help us through “the hike of caregiving” should always include trust building. In doing so, we reduce our loved one’s anxiety. We deal with less resistance. We work together with our loved ones and it makes a difference.

We can incorporate trust building into our caregiving in simple ways. We can slow down and look into the eyes of our loved ones to show we’re listening. We can pause and hold their hand for a few moments instead of always rushing. We can share memories and simply sit in their presence. As you care for your loved ones, remember the power of spending moments, even short ones to cherish the one you’re caring for. Build that trust and give your loved ones the best care.
