Thank you for joining us for another great Richmond Symphony season!

2018/19 is a milestone year for us, as we honor our Music Director Steven Smith in his final season in Richmond.

Over the past decade, Steven has been a tremendous leader for our organization – creating powerful musical experiences and building the orchestra to new levels of artistic excellence and performance.

Steven has been a driving force in the orchestra’s growth over the last ten years and all of us involved in the Richmond Symphony feel gratitude for his artistic leadership, and for the many accomplishments that we have been able to make during his tenure.

In celebrating his time with us, Steven has chosen some memorable programs and performances for his culminating year, opening the season with the incomparable pianist Lang Lang and closing the Altria Masterworks Series with the wonderful mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, performing one of her signature roles, Carmen, in an un-staged performance of Bizet’s perennially popular opera. We are especially proud to have been invited to partner with the Virginia World War I and World War II Commemoration Commission of the General Assembly to present Brahms’ Requiem and Barber’s Adagio to mark November’s 100th Anniversary of the 1918 Armistice.

This 2018/19 will be a pivotal year for the Symphony, coming off of the great success of our 60th Anniversary Season and preceding the search year for a new Music Director in 2019/20, before we host the Menuhin Competition, the ‘Olympics of the Violin’, in May 2020.

Keeping us focused through all of this is the Symphony’s vision: to change lives through the power of our music.

ABOUT THE RICHMOND SYMPHONY

VISION We change lives through the power of our music.

MISSION The Richmond Symphony performs, teaches, and champions music to inspire and unite our communities.

HISTORY

The Richmond Symphony was founded by a small, dedicated group of music-lovers, giving its debut on October, 28, 1957 under Edgar Schenkman, Music Director from 1957-1971.

The Symphony performed only three concerts in its inaugural season; today, members of the Richmond Symphony make more than 200 public appearances each 38-week concert season.

The organization includes an orchestra of 70 professional musicians, the 150-voice (volunteer) Richmond Symphony Chorus, the 200-strong volunteer members of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League, and over 250 students in the four Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestras.

Each season, the Symphony reaches 250,000 Virginians across the Commonwealth through its concerts, education programs, statewide touring, and weekly radio broadcasts on 93.1/107.3 WCVE-FM. The Symphony also produces special gala concerts and seasonal performances such as Messiah, and performs in productions each year with the Richmond Ballet and Virginia Opera. Its roster of guest artists includes both internationallyrespected soloists and locally-prominent musicians, and its programs have garnered both

popular and critical acclaim over many decades, including awards for adventurous programming from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). The organization was recognized as a leader in the national orchestral field in 2000 as one of only 12 symphonies invited to participate in the Andrew W. Mellon Orchestra Program, a 10-year study that addressed internal organizational culture, civic and community engagement, and other strategic issues affecting the sector as a whole. The Richmond Symphony was recently named as one of 21 American orchestras selected as a leader in orchestra innovation by the League of American Orchestras through its Futures Fund Initiative.

The Richmond Symphony is committed to excellence in presenting all kinds of orchestral music, with the goal of making live music accessible to everyone, from ticketed concerts downtown to free events in the region’s parks using the Symphony’s new Big Tent. The Big Tent made its debut in 2015 and includes four to five free concerts per season, staged in neighborhoods around the region, presented as part of large-scale community festivals.

NEOSonicFest, a festival of contemporary music, this year celebrating its sixth anniversary, and from 1999-2013 was Music Director of the Santa Fe Symphony & Chorus.

From 1997 to 2003, Steven Smith served as the Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra where he appeared on the subscription series at Severance Hall and Blossom Music Center. With a strong commitment to arts education, he assisted in the planning and conducting of The Cleveland Orchestra’s educational and family concerts and hosted the orchestra’s annual broadcast videoconference which won an Emmy Award in 2001. For five seasons, he also served as Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra which performed by invitation at Carnegie Hall in 2001. From 2002–05, he was associate professor at Oberlin Conservatory, where he led both orchestral and opera performances.

Music Director & Lewis T. Booker Music Director Chair This season, Steven Smith marks his ninth and final season as Music Director of the Richmond Symphony and his eighth season in the Lewis T. Booker Music Director Chair.

During his tenure, the Richmond Symphony has significantly expanded its repertoire and broadened public engagement, while also enjoying increased ticket sales and enthusiastic critical acclaim. In addition, the Richmond Symphony has recently received special recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Virginia Commission for the Arts for its innovative programs, including the major initiative of the ‘Big Tent’ which has made possible free outdoor concerts and a new level of collaboration with the Richmond community.

Richmond audiences have also enjoyed Richmond Symphony appearances by noted guest artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Lang Lang, Rhiannon Giddens, and Savion Glover. A major commission and commercial recording of Children of Adam by Mason Bates brought the 60th anniversary season of 2017-18 to a rousing conclusion.

Steven Smith also continues as Music Director of the Grammy Award-winning Cleveland Chamber Symphony, which produces the annual 24

During his time in Richmond, Steven Smith has been delighted to collaborate with other performing groups in the region, including the Richmond Ballet’s 30th anniversary celebration in 2014, and the Virginia Opera’s production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro in 2013. He has appeared as guest conductor with orchestras such as San Francisco, Milwaukee, Houston, Detroit, Tulsa, Jacksonville, Puerto Rico Symphony, and the Aspen Music Festival. Abroad, he has performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, New Zealand’s Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and Mexico’s Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa. In addition, he has conducted numerous opera and orchestral performances at Indiana University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Brevard Music Center.

Steven Smith is an ASCAP award-winning composer, with commissions from The Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, Eugene Youth Symphony, and solo artists. His works have been performed throughout the United States and in Europe. He was named Ohio Composer of the Year for 2008.

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Steven Smith earned Master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music. He is the recipient of the CIM Alumni Association 1999 Alumni Achievement Award and the Geraldine C. and Emory M. Ford Foundation’s Conductor Career Development Grant.

Dive Team: Amphibious James, 2018 in cooperation with Virginia Commonwealth University, a live art installation including a chamber ensemble and a scuba diving team. Ms. Lin has also been a featured guest in Classical Revolution RVA’s Mozart Festivals, sharing orchestral music in non-traditional venues.

Chia-Hsuan Lin

Associate Conductor & Jack and Mary Ann Frable Associate Conductor Chair

A semi-finalist in the 2013 Jeunesses Musicales International Conducting Competition in Bucharest, Romania, Ms. Lin shows her great passion through diverse musical genres. Ms. Lin has served as music director of the University of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and South Loop Symphony Orchestra (Chicago), assistant conductor of Opera at the CCM Spoleto Music Festival in Italy, has conducted the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra, and Academy of Taiwan Strings and Taipei Philharmonic Chorus as part of the Taiwanese premiere of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Reflecting her passion for vocal and contemporary works, Ms. Lin conducted Mark Adamo’s Little Women at Northwestern University and Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the University of Cincinnati.

Appointed as Associate Conductor of the Richmond Symphony and Music Director of the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2016, Ms. Lin returns to the Richmond Symphony for a third season in 2018. Her highlights last season included Handel’s Messiah, the Metro Collection Series, Symphony Pops, family concerts, and a record crowd exceeding 19,000 for Henrico County’s “Red, White, and Lights” Independence Day celebration.

Ms. Lin first received musical training as a pianist in Taiwan at age three. At age nine, she began studies as a percussionist and later performed with the renowned Taipei Percussion Group from 2003 to 2010. Ms. Lin received her undergraduate degree in percussion and graduate degree in conducting from National Taiwan Normal University, where she studied with Apo Hsu. With Mark Gibson, she earned a graduate degree at the CollegeConservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati, and in 2012, Ms. Lin received the Foreign Study Award for Music from the Taiwan Education Bureau to begin her doctoral degree with Victor Yampolsky at Northwestern University.

“[Ms. Lin] moves with the command and energy of a soccer star,” wrote Larry Hayes (former editor, Journal Gazette) in his 2016 review of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic’s highest-attended Masterworks subscription concert in the last decade. Appointed as Assistant Conductor to the Philharmonic in 2014, Ms. Lin led concerts across Northern Indiana, and has since enjoyed many guest appearances.

Ms. Lin has further refined her craft in workshops with the Richmond Symphony, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and the Romanian Royal Camerata, and masterclasses with Günther Herbig, Jorma Panula, Imre Palló, Gábor Hollerung, Helmuth Rilling, Steven Smith, Mei-Ann Chen, Harold Farberman, Markand Thakar, Israel Yinon, and Douglas Bostock.

Lauded for her clarity and elegance on the podium, Chia-Hsuan Lin has shared her talents in many diverse musical settings throughout the world.

In demand as a guest conductor, Ms. Lin looks forward to her debut with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra this season. Last season, she was a twicefeatured guest in the Virginia Symphony’s Pops Series. opera in a variety of styles ranging from Mozart to Menotti. Sensitive to the music of our time, he has contributed to the creation of many contemporary North-American works, including the worldpremiere of Anthony Brandt’s opera, The Birth of Something with Da Camera in Houston. Under his leadership, three recent VCU Opera productions of The Gondoliers (2015), The Old Maid and the Thief (2012), and Hansel & Gretel (2011) won top prizes at the National Opera Association competition.

His involvement toward the youth reflects a wellhoned passion for music education. In addition to his work at VCU, he is a regular collaborator with the All-Virginia State Orchestra, the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Hampton Roads Chamber Players, among others.

Daniel Myssyk Assistant Conductor

Virginia Commonwealth University Associate Professor and Director of Orchestral Activities Daniel Myssyk was Music Director of the Montreal based Orchestre de chambre Appassionata from 2000 to 2016. A few years back, he brought the orchestra on its first American tour, which included two concerts in Richmond. They also toured before enthused audiences in Ontario in January of 2014. In 2017, he made his debut with the Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, l’Orchestre de la Francophonie, and the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (TX), where he is currently a finalist for the music director position. Since 2015, he has been a regular guest conductor of the Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra in Mexico.

Myssyk conducts repertoire from the classical, romantic, modern, and contemporary periods with great attention to stylistically appropriate detail.

He maintains a continuous engagement with

Myssyk’s recordings have received widespread critical acclaim. In 2012, he completed the recording of Czech Serenades with works by Suk and Dvorak.

The CD was in nomination for best recording of the year at the “ADISQ” awards, Quebec’s equivalent of the Grammys, and at the Prix Opus from the Conseil québécois de la musique. Jean-Yves Duperron of the Classical wrote: “Conductor Daniel Myssyk and the members of the Appassionata Chamber Orchestra ply their magic in this music, and shape each and every phrase, and infuse each and every note, with care and sincere expression. I’ve rarely heard these two works played with this much conviction.”

In 2010, his CD Idyla (on Fidelio label), was nominated for an Opus Prize as best recording of the year. A CD featuring American trumpet player and VCU colleague Rex Richardson playing Dana Wilson’s Concerto for Trumpet and Strings was released on Summit Records, earning rave reviews from the International Trumpet Guild Journal.

His most recent CD, on the Atma label, features works by Quebec composer François Dompierre and has earned excellent reviews from Radio-Canada and Magazine Son et image.

Director of the Richmond Symphony Chorus & James Erb Choral Chair Versatile, engaging, and energetic, conductor Erin Freeman serves in multiple positions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and maintains a national presence through guest conducting engagements. Freeman holds a joint position as Director of the award-winning Richmond Symphony Chorus and Director of Choral Activities at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Additionally, she is the Artistic Director of Wintergreen Performing Arts, which presents the annual Wintergreen Summer Music Festival

Guest conducting engagements include the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, South Carolina Philharmonic, Savannah Symphony, Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and additional ensembles in Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, and Illinois. In recent seasons, Freeman made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Distinguished Concerts International Orchestra and Chorus, conducted a return engagement with Berkshire Choral International in Asheville, NC, and made two recordings with the Richmond Symphony Chorus. The upcoming 2018-2019 season includes her debut at Symphony Hall in Boston with Berkshire Choral International, multiple engagements with the Richmond Symphony, two performances at La Madeleine in Paris, and three productions with the Richmond Ballet.

Freeman holds degrees from Northwestern University (BMus), Boston University (MM), and Peabody Conservatory (DMA). Instructors include Gustav Meier, Victor Yampolsky, Helmuth Rilling, Murry Sidlin, Ann Howard Jones, and Robert Shaw.

THE DONOR ADVISORY BOARD A forum and sounding board of those significantly invested in the organization’s success, the Donor Advisory Board meets for conversations and receptions with the Symphony’s leadership team. Members receive special behind-the-scenes access, serve as advocates and ambassadors for the Symphony, and provide feedback and advice on the Symphony’s work.

The group consists of individuals who make annual leadership gifts of $1,500 or more or represent businesses that contribute $5,000 or more.

THE 2030 GROUP The 20/30 Group is a collection of individuals between the ages of 21-39 who attend concerts, engage in networking and social activities, and provide feedback to help the Richmond Symphony enhance programming and reach new audiences in the Richmond community.

THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL The Community Council is a group of civic leaders and individuals from throughout Metro Richmond.

THE RENNOLDS SOCIETY Edmund A. Rennolds, Jr. (affectionately known as “Ned”) and his wife, Mary Anne, were founders of the Richmond Symphony with Brigadier General Vincent Meyer and Emma Gray Trigg. Ned and Mary Anne were synonymous with the Richmond Symphony. They worked tirelessly to help establish the orchestra – volunteering in many capacities, housing musicians, holding meetings and receptions in their home, supporting the orchestra financially, and giving valued guidance. They agreed to lend their name to the Rennolds Society, hoping membership would grow and help sustain the future of the Richmond Symphony.

It’s easy to join the Rennolds Society - enjoy special events for members, use of the Dominion Energy Center for the Performing Arts Donor Lounge, and help secure the future of the orchestra! Members have an interest in the Symphony and have made provisions for the orchestra in their will or other estate planning vehicle.
