STARTED WITH A VISION A high-quality Catholic education should be available to all who seek it

For more than four hundred years, Catholic schools have done the work of the Church to educate children to become good Catholics and good citizens. Millions of children have benefited from an academically rigorous education grounded in faith.

In recent years, economic realities have taken their toll and many Catholic schools have closed their doors. In 2006, Saint Columbkille School, like so many urban Catholic schools, was slated for closure. Student enrollment had dropped to 140 and the school building was in serious need of repair.

With the support of Boston College and its Lynch School of Education, as well as the continued commitment of St. Columbkille’s Parish and the Archdiocese of Boston, Saint Columbkille School was saved. The partnership of the Archdiocese, Boston College, and St. Columbkille’s Parish remains to this day.

This historic partnership is grounded in the belief that a revitalized school would not only provide Catholic education to the children of the Allston and Brighton neighborhoods but also offer a blueprint for successful, high-quality Catholic schools in Boston and beyond.

The transformation at Saint Columbkille Partnership School is a great success story. A renaissance has taken place.

Starting with the establishment of the Early Childhood Program and finishing with the formation of Loyola Academy, our middle school, the educational experience at Saint Columbkille is a prime example of how urban Catholic education can flourish.

Dedicated teachers who studied at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education teach our children using a researchedbased curriculum and technologies that will prepare them for success in their high school, college, and professional futures.

Saint Columbkille Partnership School opens the doors of opportunity for children in the neighborhood and beyond.

Thanks to the generous support of our benefactors, the school facility has been refurbished and expanded. Significant financial aid is provided to meet the needs of our families.

FOCUS ON FAITH FORMATION THE FAITH FORMATION OF OUR CHILDREN IS OUR HIGHEST PRIORITY

Saint Columbkille Partnership School is first and foremost a Catholic school working closely with Saint Columbkille Parish to instill a love of God and a strong faith in our children. We are proud of our Catholic heritage and traditions, and of the warm welcome we extend to children and families of other faith traditions.

Children at our school develop a strong moral compass based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. This enables them to confidently make good choices and to withstand negative

pressures. They know that they have a responsibility to make the world a better place through their actions.

The Jesuit spirituality of Boston College influences our religious instruction. Children are taught to see God in all things and in all people and to become men and women for others. The Gospel imperative of service to others is woven into the fabric of their souls.

When my parents became involved with Boston College in the formation of the Roche Center for Catholic Education, it was with the belief that Catholic education was a way to help improve all schools. It is a natural extension of that spirit that I offer my support to Saint Columbkille Partnership School. My hope is that we can share ideas and methods to help improve Catholic education everywhere by developing a local model that works to educate the whole child in a culture infused with the Catholic faith.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS CHILDREN DESERVE A PLACE TO LEARN, GROW AND COMPETE

When the partnership was formed in 2006, the school building was in serious disrepair. Work began to renew the campus.

In year one, security grates were removed from the windows; construction crews replaced floors, ceilings and light fixtures; and dumpsters were filled with furnishings dating back half a century. At summer’s end, students and teachers returned to school finding classrooms that were bright, cheery, and conducive to learning.

In subsequent years, the facility grew as enrollment increased.

In the summer of 2014, a $1.2 million dollar expansion took place. This project added two science laboratories, an art room, a music room, a library and eight additional classrooms.

In 2015, through the generosity of a $1 million dollar grant from the Yawkey Foundation, the asphalt play area was transformed into a recreational center that includes a turf field, climbing structures, a gathering plaza, and raised bed gardens.

Our partnership with Boston College leverages the many assets of the University and has been pivotal to the success of our school.

Through the generosity of Boston College, Saint Columbkille Partnership School teachers and administrators earn master’s degrees in education at no charge. The expertise gained from the Lynch School of Education has driven curricula revision. Boston College student teachers learn their craft under the watchful eyes of our talented teachers. Boston College’s City Connects program

Boston College students, faculty, and staff volunteer on a daily basis enriching the overall educational experience.

Boston College students serve as mentors, coaches, and role models while faculty serve as advisors. As a result, Saint Columbkille Partnership School students develop a yearning for higher education.

In 2006, Boston College and the Lynch School of Education engaged Saint Columbkille in a renewal of the curriculum, instructional practices, assessment, and student support in the last remaining Catholic elementary school in Brighton.

The partnership continues to design best practices in all aspects of the academic and faith-based mission of the school.

I am proud of the students from the Winston Center and its Jenks Leadership Group who created the Spring Olympic Program at Saint Columbkille Partnership School. It was wonderful to see so many Boston College students volunteering as mentors and coaches.

Students who graduate from Saint Columbkille Partnership School are well-prepared. Emphasis is placed on teaching higher level thinking skills. We teach our children not only to remember facts but also to analyze and apply what has been learned. We challenge students to dream big, think deeply, and engage in problem solving.

The Saint Columbkille Partnership School education brings to life the connection that our students have with each other and with all people. Curriculum was intentionally selected to

be rigorous, grounded in character formation, and celebratory of diversity. We also teach children to see beauty in the world through art and music and to appreciate God’s creation through an understanding of the sciences.

God’s mosaic is on display at Saint Columbkille Partnership School. Families from different socio-economic, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds make up our community. All members are valued and learn from one another. Many of our families have recently immigrated to our country and many of our students will be the first in their families to attend college.

Students are known and loved by their teachers and school staff. Through robust after-school and co-curricular programs such as archery, drama, rowing, and engineering, they are guided to discover their talents. Most importantly, they are formed to love God and show kindness to others.

Children who enter our school soon learn that they share the common desire to achieve. They develop high aspirations that will serve them well into the future.
