MAGIS: STRIVING FOR MORE

MISSION
Saint Columbkille Partnership School is a community of families, educators, and partners inspired by the values of the Gospel. We are committed to the education of children of all backgrounds in an environment that cultivates respect, mutuality, and care. Rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition, we search for the truth with joy, practice the good with conviction, and contemplate the beautiful as we prepare students for lives of faith, service, and leadership.
Dear Saint Columbkille Partnership School Community,
As I reflect on the past year, the theme of Magis —“the more”— has been at the forefront of our school’s journey. This Jesuit principle calls us to seek greater excellence and strive for the greater glory of God in all we do. It has guided our efforts in expanding academic opportunities, deepening our faith formation, and creating a vibrant, inclusive community where every child is known and loved. From enhancing our math offerings in middle school to now include algebra, to the addition of Universal PreK (UPK) classrooms in our early childhood program, we have embraced the challenge of continually doing more for our students and families.

In the 2023-2024 school year, we witnessed the power of Magis through our students’ achievements and our faculty’s dedication to fostering both academic and personal growth. Thanks to the dynamic collaboration of our teachers, families, and staff, we have been able to provide the best possible learning experiences. Last year, we celebrated a remarkable increase in the percentage of students in every grade level attaining both high achievement and high growth in math.
The milestones we’ve reached—such as the growth of our endowment to just over $2 million— were made possible not only by the hard work of our community but also through the generous support of our donors. Your contributions have allowed us to enhance critical programs, expand access to a high-quality Catholic education, and invest in the future of every child who walks through our doors.
To all who have supported us—thank you. Your generosity allows us to go beyond the ordinary and strive for the extraordinary, ensuring that Saint Columbkille Partnership School remains a place where students are prepared for lives of faith, service, and leadership. We are deeply grateful for your continued investment in our mission, and we look forward to the future, knowing that together, we can continue to seek the Magis in all we do.
With gratitude,

Jennifer Kowieski , Head of School
“ Our greatest success in the 2023-2024 school year was seeing our community come together to build a shared vision for the future. From the dedication of the new Welcome Center to the collaborative effort behind our Strategic Plan, this year was marked by milestones that reflect the strength and commitment of our school community. What makes Saint Cols truly special is the spirit that fills every space—our students, faculty, and families take immense pride in each other, creating a vibrant, welcoming environment that makes every visit feel like coming home.”

THE ACADEMY AT PINE MANOR
Over the past several years, Saint Columbkille students have had the unique opportunity to apply for the Academy at Pine Manor Institute for Student Success, a Boston College program established in 2020. Currently, thirteen STCPS students and alumni are enrolled. The Academy provides a two-part experience: a Summer Enrichment Program for students in Grades 8–12, alongside year-round tutoring and mentoring. Specifically designed for underrepresented and first-generation college students, the Pine Manor Academy offers a cost-free program that provides academic support through BC Success Coaches. Students participate in a residential Summer Enrichment Program on Boston College’s Chestnut Hill campus, with their time in residence increasing from 8th to 12th grade. By offering opportunities like this, Saint Cols exemplifies the value of Magis —helping students strive for more in their academic and personal growth.
“ The Pine Manor program has helped me grow by giving me a preview of college life, teaching me to be more organized and responsible, and helping me become more social and make lasting friendships. I’m grateful for the opportunity to take classes in the same classrooms as Boston College students, dine in their dining halls, and explore the beautiful campus. As I move on to high school, I believe that my sister Livia, with her potential, will continue to grow and thrive at Saint Cols, excelling in school, helping her peers, and being a great friend. Saint Cols prepared me well for high school, making my transition smooth and teaching me to stay organized, turn in my work on time, and confidently reach out to teachers and classmates when I have questions. The school’s supportive Catholic community has also inspired me to serve others and grow in confidence, and the experiences I’ve had, from helping younger students to participating more in class, will stay with me for life.”
GIOVANNA GONZAGA STCPS ‘24, Ursuline Academy ‘28
“ I like math. We play games and go to different stations to help us learn. Last year we learned about skip counting and now I’m really good at it. I also like playing with my friends at recess. We usually play tag and climb on the structures. I like school so much because we get to learn a lot.”

CAMPUS MINISTRY
Last year, with generous support from the Charles S. and Millicent P. Brown Family Foundation, Saint Columbkille Partnership School was able to establish a part-time campus minister role. This important addition has provided valuable spiritual guidance and support to our students, enriching their experience and fostering a deeper sense of community within our school. We are grateful for the foundation’s commitment to our mission and the lasting impact it continues to have on the lives of our students.
“ My children look forward to going to school every day at Saint Columbkille Partnership School. The teachers and administration really go above and beyond to ensure that each student is known, loved, and appreciated for what they bring to the community, regardless of background. The partnership with Boston College ensures that the most cutting-edge educational ideas are being practiced in each classroom, and are grounded in the history of the school within the Brighton community. My children are learning to write well, think well, stand up for social justice, and be fully secure in who they are as people. The Saint Cols community is incredible with tons of opportunities for families to engage. I could not be more pleased with the quality of education and the quality of the community!”

As a recent graduate of Saint Columbkille, where I have been a student since Pre-K, my artwork reflects the values of faith, service, and leadership that define the school. These values have profoundly shaped my experience and the community at Saint Columbkille.
In my painting, the boy holding a rosary symbolizes faith, the girl picking up trash represents service, and the older student mentoring younger ones highlights leadership. The smiling central figure captures the joy and pride we feel as part of this community.
Using acrylic paint with touches of crayon, I aimed to convey a youthful yet polished perspective, honoring the vibrant spirit of Saint Columbkille. I am grateful for the chance to share my experience through this work and to celebrate the enduring impact of this special school.

“ Saint Cols has been like a family to me. When I come to school, I feel special, greeted with smiles and surrounded by friends who feel like sisters. The teachers have always been there to lift me up, especially when I struggled. Even when I make mistakes, they encourage me to keep trying, making sure we all understand. This school is truly my home away from home, where I’ve grown and learned so much.”
ANABELLA AGUILAR Grade 7

“ When I go to high school I want to find a school that is as diverse and welcoming as Saint Cols. When I started here in Pre-K I didn’t speak any English because I came from a different country. I have grown so much since then. I have learned so much from this community, mostly that everyone is different, and that’s a good thing. I like the teachers here; every time I come into the classroom they are happy to see me.”

2024 BC RACE TO EDUCATE
The 14th annual BC Race to Educate, held on Saturday, April 29 at Boston College's Alumni Stadium, was a great success! With nearly 1,000 participants, the event showcased the strong ties between our school, Boston College, and the broader community. This year's race raised an impressive $165,000 to support programs and services for our students, surpassing last year's total by $10,000. Contributions included $18,555 from registrations, $75,719 from sponsors, $17,135 from staff, and $53,591 from families. These funds are crucial for continuing our mission to provide high-quality education and enriching experiences for all our students.

ATHLETICS
Our athletics program continues to grow in popularity among students and families, offering a dynamic range of opportunities that foster both skill development and personal growth. Our athletics program not only promotes physical fitness but also plays a crucial role in developing leadership skills among our students. Through team sports and club activities, students learn the importance of responsibility, collaboration, and respect. They are encouraged to take initiative, support their teammates, and demonstrate sportsmanship both on and off the field. In the 2023-2024 school year, STCPS offered the following athletic opportunities:
• Soccer
• Cross Country
• Rowing
• Ski Club
• Basketball
• Tennis
• Volleyball

“ At Saint Columbkille, the sense of community is unlike anything I’ve experienced— some of my best friends are colleagues across different grade levels, and the support from faculty and leadership is incredible. The partnership with Boston College, along with our professional development opportunities, helps us continually grow as educators. I will graduate with my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College this year, thanks to this partnership. Saint Columbkille truly embodies the spirit of magis by ensuring we all have the support to thrive as educators, empowering us to bring out the best in our students.”

MAGIS AWARD
Each year, we recognize a parent volunteer who exemplifies Magis through their contributions to our school community. We are fortunate to have many families who generously share their time and talents with us. This year, the Magis Award was presented to Jenny Mileski, a parent of two Saint Columbkille students, for her outstanding volunteer work. Ms. Mileski co-chaired Christmas at Saint Cols and led the Room Parent program, consistently going above and beyond to bring joy and support to our school. Her contributions truly reflect the spirit of Magis —striving for the greater good of our community. Jenny shared, “Volunteering at Saint Cols allows me to form meaningful relationships with other parents and staff, experience new things, and show our appreciation for everything the staff does for our students. Plus, it’s fun, and I love working with the students—they’re truly amazing humans!” Thank you, Jenny, and a sincere thank you to all our volunteers who enrich our school in so many ways.

Seventh Graders Write Sequel to “A Wish in the Dark”
In a remarkable display of creativity, dedication, and teamwork, a group of seventh graders at Saint Columbkille Partnership School recently wrote and published their own sequel to A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat. Inspired by the novel they read in their English Language Arts (ELA) class, the students embarked on the project outside of class time, collaboratively drafting a 100+ page sequel titled The Second Blessing. Complete with a dedication page, “About the Author” sections, and a cover designed by the students themselves, the project was entirely student-driven.
ELA teacher Rebecca Tapanes recognized the students' enthusiasm and commitment, going above and beyond to bring their vision to life. With professional printing—including a barcode— the book became more than just a story; it became a tangible achievement for the young authors.
“As a teacher you are always trying to get your students engaged and excited. The fact that they took this and ran with it was really gratifying,” said Ms. Tapanes. “It was important to me that their hard work be recognized in a special way.”
Each student received their own printed copy

AUTHORS, LEFT TO RIGHT: Abby Delahanty, Maeve Macioce, Talia Goodwin, Emma Franceschet, and Marin McAuliffe
of The Second Blessing, thanks to Ms. Tapanes’ efforts to have the books professionally printed.
Jim Downey, ‘62 and author of A Boston Neighborhood Through Time, provided funding for the printing of additional copies, helping to share the students’ book with classrooms and families throughout the school community. Mr. Downey, whose book chronicles the history of Allston-Brighton and Saint Columbkille Church & School, has generously donated proceeds from his work to support young authors at Saint Columbkille.
The students expressed immense gratitude to both Ms. Tapanes and Mr. Downey for their encouragement and belief in their work. “To see my name on a cover—that was a dream come true,” shared student-author Talia Goodwin. Fellow

writer Abby Delahanty added, “It’s inspiring, not only to us but to younger students at Saint Cols, to know that a real author would care about what we’re doing and support that. I think I want to be an author now.”
This collaborative project is a testament to the power of nurturing young talent and providing the space for creativity. As a meaningful expression of Magis, it exemplifies how deeply students can engage when given the opportunity to pursue their passions and bring their ideas to fruition.
Saint Columbkille is grateful to Ms. Tapanes and Mr. Downey and all who support initiatives like these, reinforcing our mission to inspire students toward lives of faith, service, and leadership.

SISTER CATHERINE’S 70TH JUBILEE
This year, Saint Columbkille Partnership School celebrated Sister Catherine Delaney’s 70th Jubilee with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, honoring seven decades of dedication to education and loving service. Since joining Saint Columbkille in 1996, Sister Catherine has been an integral part of the community, consistently inspiring students, teachers, and staff. Reflecting on her milestone, she shared, "I just hope that my devotion to education has touched and inspired others to make lives better for others, as I have tried to do."
The school marked this special occasion on May 30th with a Mass, a student-made gift of artwork, and a luncheon attended by students, staff, and guests. Sister Catherine also celebrated among her religious community at Emmanuel College, alongside fellow Sisters marking their Jubilees. Sister Catherine’s tireless dedication exemplifies the Jesuit value of Magis, continually striving to uplift others and create lasting impact through education and service.

“Saint Columbkille is an incredible school where, as its tagline claims, ‘Every student is known and loved.’ Over our three years at STCPS, my children have been taught by educators who are dedicated, energetic, creative, and passionate. They have not only motivated my children to give their best, but they have also made my kids love school. The leveled learning approach and the faith-driven community are what drove us to STCPS, and it has been the one of best decisions we’ve made for our children.”
