Students get to see real-world examples of children at different stages of development. After observation, students can connect certain behaviors, such as motor skills, language milestones, and emotions, with terms and facts they learned in class.

Film Studies
My goal is to familiarize students with international cinema, broaden their horizons, help them think critically and appreciate diversity. As an immigrant and person of color, I find it extremely important to help students embrace diversity and see the world beyond the United States of America.

I invite children who are in the developmental stage that we are covering to join our class for the day. We then do activities with the child that demonstrate the physical, cognitive and psychosocial milestones we’ve been studying.

The Class: Introduction
Film has the power to transport people to different times, spaces and cultures. In the beginning, students are reluctant. They don’t like to read subtitles and they aren’t used to watching something other than a Hollywood movie. But after a few weeks, they start to enjoy the films and actively engage in discussions.
The Assignment: Observation Day each week

The Class: Principles of Finance

John Garcia, DBA Assistant Professor of Finance

The Assignment: Case Study — Buy vs. Rent
The Assignment: Criminal Justice Reflection Paper — A Real-World Observation
Once students understand how to calculate net present value, they can use it to determine the optimal financial choice across more of their own current life decisions: Should I buy or lease a car? Should I refinance my student loans? Should I pay someone to take care of the lawn or buy the equipment and do it myself?

Students often have to go out of their comfort zone, engaging with social workers, attorneys, the accused or survivor testifying in a trial or citizens in need. They learn much more about the discipline and enhance their passion for criminal social justice in the process. I’ve been teaching this class for 14 years, and students come back to tell me how impactful this assignment was for them.
This experiential learning assignment connects real-world content with students’ academic training and critical thinking skills, sending them out into the field to observe criminal trials, attend ride-alongs with police officers, and interview people working in and connected to the industry.
ACADEMICS 5fall/winter 2022
Asking the practical and tangible question ‘Should I rent or buy a house?’ introduces students to the idea that money is worth different amounts at different points in time. Known as ‘net present value,’ students must incorporate this calculation into their evaluation as they present their decision.
