No more than five percent of the students from each graduating class are invited to participate.

University Honors Students complete five courses in the University Honors Program curriculum to graduate with University Honors, and those who maintain a Cal Lutheran GPA of 3.5 or higher receive University Honors with Distinction.

Departmental Honors Departmental Honors students conduct a several-semesterslong research project or creative endeavor and report their work in a senior thesis or exhibition.

Departmental Distinction Each year the faculty nominate students for Departmental Distinction who have exhibited an unusually high degree of excellence within their major.

Dean’s List The Dean’s List recognizes full-time traditional undergraduate students (enrolled for 12 or more graded credits per semester) and Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals students (enrolled for 24 or more graded credits per academic year) who earn a GPA of 3.6 or higher.

2025 PROVOST’S AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Amaya Charles Hello I am Amaya Charles, I am from Aurora, Colorado, and a senior here at Cal Lutheran. I am majoring in film and television with an emphasis in production. I love all things entertainment from movies to books, to music and art, and am looking to pursue entertainment law. I also love basketball as I am on the Regals basketball team here at Cal Lutheran.

Leah Derrick Leah Derrick is graduating with majors in French and physics, and a minor in dance. While at Cal Lutheran, she was an officer for the History Club, the Languages and Cultures Club, the Francophone Club and the Physics Club, a French departmental assistant and a dancer in several concerts. She is extremely thankful for her family, friends and professors who helped her throughout her college journey.

Ayumi Lara Ayumi Lara, originally from a small town in Japan, is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in communication from the Bachelorʼs Degree for Professionals program. After a 15-year academic gap, her real-world experiences have shaped her understanding of language and communication, enriching her college education. She will pursue a masterʼs degree in Asian language teaching at UCLA, with the goal of teaching Japanese at the college level. She is deeply grateful for the support of her family and the mentorship of her professors at Cal Lutheran, whose guidance has inspired her passion for education and helped her overcome challenges along the way.

Daniela Ruiz Daniela Ruiz is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in multimedia with an emphasis in graphic design/print and a minor in sociology. Her work draws inspiration from her Mexican American identity and culture. During her time at Cal Lutheran, she worked as a student graphic designer for Marketing and Communications, department assistant for the Visual Arts and Sociology Department, and received a Recognition Award in Design at the D.A. Davidson & Co Youth Art Show. She is grateful for her family and faculty who helped her along her academic journey.

HONORS CONVOCATION KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANGELINE HAYLING, MPPA ’08 Cal Lutheran alumna Angeline Hayling, MPPA ’08, exemplifies the power of humanitarian entrepreneurship, blending her passion for social impact with business innovation. This year, the Cal Lutheran Alumni Board of Directors honors Hayling with the 2025 Outstanding Alumni Award, recognizing her distinguished career and unwavering commitment to ethical leadership, sustainability and global service.

A lifelong advocate for service beyond oneself, Hayling draws inspiration from her father, a reverend devoted to community outreach. As a child, she traveled with him on mission trips, witnessing firsthand the power of compassion and the profound impact of giving back. Those early experiences gave her a deep sense of purpose, shaping a career dedicated to uplifting communities and fostering meaningful change.

“My father’s work instilled in me the understanding that compassion and action go hand in hand and that we all have a responsibility to uplift those in need,” Hayling said.

Hayling earned her bachelor’s degree in management from Cameron University before pursuing a master’s degree in public policy and administration at Cal Lutheran. Her time at Cal Lutheran was marked by thought-provoking coursework, mentorship from distinguished faculty and immersive internships with humanitarian organizations. One of her most influential mentors was former faculty member Jeff Gorell, current Ventura County District 2 supervisor whose background in law, public service and military leadership brought public policy to life in the classroom.

“Professor Gorell showed us that leadership isn’t just about policy — it’s about people, choices and standing for something bigger than yourself,” Hayling said.

Beyond academics, Hayling applied her passion for service through hands-on work with the American Red Cross and the International Rescue Committee, assisting communities in crisis and supporting refugees seeking asylum. These experiences reinforced her belief in resilience, preparedness and the power of direct action — principles that continue to guide her today.

Hayling is the co-founder of Island Tribe, a sustainable fashion and wellness brand that fosters global connections through fair-trade partnerships with artisans in Bali, India and Mexico. As a designer and entrepreneur, she oversees sustainable production from concept to execution, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. Expanding her impact beyond fashion, she also curates exclusive wellness retreats in Bali, Grenada and California, offering transformative experiences in yoga, breathwork, plant medicine and holistic healing.

Hayling credits her education at Cal Lutheran for shaping her leadership philosophy and equipping her with the tools to navigate ethical decision-making and social entrepreneurship.

“The MPPA program at Cal Lutheran taught me how to analyze complex systems, create sustainable solutions and lead with integrity, all of which have been invaluable in growing a mission-driven business,” she said.

Island Tribe was recognized by the Fashion Institute of Technology as an Emerging Fashion Brand and Designer, and Hayling’s influence extends into the literary world as the author of the Amazon bestseller, “Resilience Through Yoga, SelfDiscovery and Healing.”

Through her work in sustainable fashion, wellness and social impact, Hayling continues to reflect Cal Lutheran’s values of leadership, service and integrity. She embraces the journey with an open heart, committed to creating a world where business serves both people and the planet.
