How much money do you need to retire?
While $1 million is often thrown around as the financial retirement ideal, the truth is there’s no one-size-fits-all amount.
At some stage most Australians will ask themselves how much they really need to retire. And while having a 7-figure amount in super may sound great, the reality is most retirees won’t have anywhere near that amount.
The good news is many people can get by in retirement without $1 million. And while the Government Age Pension acts as a safety net for those needing additional income, it’s still important to have a figure in mind for your ideal retirement savings goal. Just remember the exact amount will vary from one person to the next.
Look at your spending
Calculating how much super you need to retire will depend on your lifestyle. To work out your daily expenses, look at what you might spend on items like groceries, entertainment, holidays and general home and vehicle maintenance. There are also unexpected costs that can come up, so consider what these might be for your household.
A comfortable vs modest retirement
It’s also a good idea to think about what a comfortable retirement looks like to you. Will you want to travel overseas? Is dining out something you enjoy? And what about hobbies or interests?
Once you better understand your ideal future lifestyle you can start to work out how much money you may need to retire comfortably, rather than modestly.
1 Source: ASFA Retirement Standard, December 2023.
The ASFA Retirement Standard has some estimates on how much money you need for a comfortable retirement, when compared to a more modest one. And while the estimates assume you own your own home, they found a comfortable retirement for a couple to be $72,148 per year1. This includes regular leisure activities, dining out, car ownership, some overseas travel and premium private health insurance.
A more modest retirement for the same couple would be $46,9941 with reduced leisure activities, limited dining out and less money for travel, holidays and other living expenses.
The equivalent comfortable and modest retirement estimates for singles, worked out to be $51,278 and $32,665 respectively1.
Everyone’s retirement story is different, and it’s never too early or too late to think about life after you finish working.
Whether you’re in the stages of planning or are already retired, find out how AustralianSuper can help build the retirement lifestyle that’s right for you.

TAB IS NOW LIVE ON OVER 1,000 OF BANKTECH’S CASHCONNECT ATM
PLUS TERMINALS
Banktech, Australia’s leading ATM deployer, now has over 1,000 of their CashConnect ATM Plus terminals enabled with the TAB digital account functionality, providing even more access for TAB customers to make cash deposits and withdrawals from their digital accounts.
These terminals are located at venues in NSW, ACT and QLD, providing unparalleled access for TAB customers.
This exciting roll out of the service has been possible due to the quick upgrade process, typically completed on-site in just a few hours. Importantly, it seamlessly integrates ATM Plus transactions into existing ATM settlement processes, ensuring a smooth transition for both customers and operators.
The speed of which the roll-out has happened is matched by the quick uptake of this new service by TAB customers, highlighting the number of people out there who want to combine cash with digital technology.
Banktech is not only the pioneer of this gamechanging technology but also the undisputed leader in delivering broad access to the TAB functionality.
“We’re very proud of what we have delivered to both TAB punters and our pub and club customers,” said Henry Kiwarkis, Banktech’s General Manager of Sales. “Not only have we been able to provide an important bridge between cash and digital payments, but we’ve also delivered a safe and simple experience for both the punter and the venue, in a very short time.”
Another 800 terminals will be upgraded in the coming months, making the CashConnect ATM Plus the key player in meeting the digital payment needs of punters.
TAB, General Manager Racing Industry & Venue, Brenden Varcoe said that the ATM Plus TAB functionality is a game changer for TAB customers to access their accounts using cash.
“TAB is continuing to transform at pace, and we are proud of the success of the partnership to date.
This is an innovative omni-channel solution that provides a safe way for customers to bet in venue. We are thrilled with the roll out of upgrades so far and we can’t wait to see the machines continue to enhance the betting experience in venue.”

Meet Alisa and Amy at MV Law
Meet Alisa Taylor, Partner at MV Law, and Amy Sydney, Special Counsel and MV’s Employment Law specialist. Together, Alisa and Amy make up part of the leadership team of MV’s Litigation and Employment Team.
Alisa and Amy have a special relationship with ClubsACT, being regular attendees of the ClubsACT’s member workshops and conferences, People & Culture Committee meetings, and networking events. They also each have their own special connection to the hospitality industry, with Alisa being the President of the Board of The RUC, and Amy with a hospitality background from her school days right through to assisting her family to run a successful hospitality group in Canberra early in her legal career.
Our litigation and employment team is one of the largest in Canberra, and is not only litigation focused, but also assists our clients to manage their employment relationships from commencement right through to termination. This includes assisting with employment contracts, enterprise agreements, award compliance, policies and procedures, and of course, the complexity that comes with performance managing staff and, ultimately, termination of employment.
In addition to our employment focus, we can also help with a vast array of matters, including:
> All aspects of property development, including finance, management of town planning reviews, development agreements, strategic structuring advice, building and consultant contracts and construction management advice
> Documenting management agreements and other contracts
> Advising on club mergers and acquisitions
> Board governance
> Member disciplinary matters
> Privacy and information law
> Liquor / gaming licensing matters
> Insurance issues
> Defamation and other reputation management
> Taxation (including LVC, rates, payroll tax and federal taxes like GST)
> Debt recovery.
MV Law is one of ClubsACT’s sponsors, and this means that MV Law offers ClubsACT the following services:
1. ClubsACT members, and their employees and board members, are eligible to enjoy exclusive benefits, including a 10% discount on a wide range of legal services. This special offer extends to all fixed-fee estate planning services, such as wills and powers of attorney. Additionally, we are pleased to extend this discount to residential conveyancing services.
2. Access to our Employment Law telephone hotline for a free initial chat with Amy or one of our other employment lawyers about any employment issue your club may be facing.
3. A visit from Amy to discuss your club’s employment needs, including access to free templates to help you navigate your employment relationships.
Please contact Alisa, Amy and the team on 6279 4455 to get the conversation started. We’re keen to assist you in whatever way we can!
