Reflecting on a Year of Achievement and Looking Ahead to 2025
As 2024 draws to a close, we take this opportunity to reflect on the milestones, challenges, and remarkable achievements of the past year for our club industry. Despite a dynamic and sometimes demanding landscape, the ACT club sector has continued to thrive as a cornerstone of the community, supporting local businesses, charities, sports, and enhancing social inclusion across Canberra. At the same time, we remain mindful of emerging challenges as we set our vision for 2025.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT
In 2024, ACT clubs once again demonstrated their integral role in strengthening our communities. Over $20 million in tax and direct financial contributions that support community projects, sporting organisations, health initiatives, and charitable causes. This funding provided essential support to grassroots sport, helped local charities expand their services, and gave a lifeline to community groups that rely on club partnerships to continue their work.
NOTABLE HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:
• Grassroots Sports Funding: Clubs across the territory funded hundreds of junior and senior teams, delivering on their promise to support physical activity and wellbeing. Thousands of young athletes, coaches, and volunteers benefited from these investments.
• Health and Wellbeing Initiatives: Many clubs spearheaded mental health awareness campaigns and programs for seniors, veterans, and young people. These efforts have played a critical role in fostering social inclusion and combating isolation.
• Charity Partnerships: Clubs partnered with charities like the Canberra Hospital Foundation, raising funds through special events, donations, and initiatives that directly impacted families and individuals in need.
The ACT club network remains one of the largest contributors to community development in the region, reminding us all of the positive role clubs play in the lives of so many.
INNOVATION AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Facing evolving consumer expectations, clubs embraced innovation in 2024 to ensure they remained relevant, sustainable, and community-driven.
• Modernized Facilities: Clubs across Canberra invested significantly in upgrading their facilities, creating inclusive and family-friendly spaces that appeal to diverse audiences. New dining experiences, entertainment offerings, and event spaces remain important community hubs in the ACT.
• Sustainability Initiatives: In response to growing environmental concerns, several clubs implemented sustainable energy solutions, commenced installing EV charging stations, operated waste reduction programs, and introduced water-saving technologies. These efforts demonstrate our sector’s commitment to a greener future.
• Digital Transformation: Clubs across Canberra continue to investigate emerging technologies in the gambling harm minimisation as we work with Government and other stakeholders to introduce best practice and evolve Canberra into the leading jurisdiction in this space.
ADVOCACY AND REPRESENTATION
ClubsACT has worked tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that the interests of our members are wellrepresented in key policy discussions. We continued to engage with government stakeholders on regulatory issues, tax reforms, and gaming policies to ensure clubs remain financially viable while maintaining responsible gambling practices.
• Regulatory Stability: We secured important advocacy wins to preserve a fair tax framework that recognizes the essential contributions of clubs.
• Responsible Gambling Practices: ClubsACT and member clubs prioritised responsible gambling education and initiatives, including investment in counselling services and improved harm minimisation tools.
• Club Industry Inquiry: Importantly ClubsACT secured agreement from all the parties in the Legislative Assembly for an independent Inquiry in the new year on the Club industry and our economic and social role across the ACT. The Inquiry should provide a roadmap to a sustainable future for the industry into the future.
• We remain committed to working collaboratively with government and community partners to address challenges without compromising the vital community contributions made by clubs.
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2025
While the achievements of 2024 have been significant, we know that 2025 will bring new challenges and opportunities that will require our collective efforts.
RISING OPERATING COSTS
The impact of rising operational costs – including energy, staffing, and supply chain pressures – remains a concern for the club sector. Clubs must continue to find innovative solutions to manage expenses while maintaining the high-quality services and experiences their members expect.
REGULATORY PRESSURES
Potential changes in regulation, particularly in relation to gaming, taxation, and licensing, could have far-reaching implications. ClubsACT will continue to advocate for balanced policy that supports the long-term viability of clubs without compromising responsible practices.
We are calling on policymakers to recognize the vital economic and social contributions of our sector. Any reform must be undertaken in consultation with ClubsACT to ensure the continued sustainability of clubs and their role in supporting the broader community.
SUSTAINABILITY GOALS
Looking ahead, sustainability remains an important priority. Clubs have the opportunity to lead the way in environmental responsibility by adopting renewable energy, reducing waste, and working towards longterm sustainable development goals. In 2025, we will be exploring new programs to support clubs in these areas.
OUR VISION FOR 2025
ClubsACT’s vision for the year ahead is clear:
• Stronger Advocacy: Ensuring that the voices of our member clubs are heard on matters of regulation, taxation, and operational sustainability.
• Community Focus: Building on our track record of giving back, clubs will continue to invest in the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the ACT.
• Innovation and Sustainability: Encouraging clubs to embrace technological advancements and sustainable practices to meet the demands of a modern, evolving audience.
• Support for Clubs: Providing members with the tools, resources, and leadership they need to remain resilient in the face of challenges.
To achieve this, we will strengthen our partnerships with government, community organisations, and industry leaders to ensure that clubs remain at the heart of local communities for generations to come.
A MESSAGE OF THANKS
As we conclude 2024, ClubsACT extends our heartfelt gratitude to our member clubs, staff, volunteers, Corporate Partners and community supporters. The successes of this year are a testament to your hard work, dedication, and passion for serving the community.
We also thank the ACT government and our local political representatives from all parties, and Independents, for their continued engagement and collaboration. By working together, we can ensure a stronger, more vibrant future for the Canberra community and the ACT club sector.
LOOKING AHEAD
As we enter 2025, ClubsACT remains focused on ensuring that clubs continue to thrive as hubs of community life. Through innovation, collaboration, and strong advocacy, we are confident that clubs will overcome challenges and seize opportunities to build an even brighter future for our sector.
Together, let us continue to champion the vital role that clubs play in supporting our communities, fostering connections, and delivering meaningful contributions to the ACT.
Here’s to a successful, prosperous, and impactful 2025.

The success of the production, which was attended by Irish Ambassador Tim Mawe and his wife, drew a large audience and helped reinvigorate the Irish Community Players. Proceeds from the play also enabled the Club to commission a bespoke mural by Simon Sawell for the foyer, showcasing a lively Irish pub session. This artwork, complemented by the recent refurbishment of the seating area and the addition of a new fireplace, has transformed the Club’s entrance into a warm, inviting space that highlights the Club’s commitment to Irish culture. Reflecting on our resilience and embracing the future
This year, our industry has experienced economic pressures and changing consumers habits, but due to our sector’s great resilience and the support of our customers, we were able to continue generating shared success. I’m extremely proud of this and want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our customers for our continued partnership.
At Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP), we have been operating in Australia for 85 years with an unwavering commitment to refreshing Australians and making a difference through our brands, people, and actions. We have one of the most extensive logistical networks in the country and we’re proud to have delivered value to our customers again in 2024.
Our customers are core to our business, and thanks to the trust they place in us, we’ve expanded our beverage choices, created new opportunities for our customers, and responded to consumer demand.
Staying relevant to consumers
In 2024, we have worked closely with our brand partners, customers, and venue operators to meet and exceed the expectations of Australians who are craving experiences and appreciating good value more than ever.
We brought Coca-Cola’s global music platform Coke Studio down under for the first time. The unique campaign saw iconic Australian artist Tones & I, collaborate with emerging local talent Young Franco and CHAII, to merge genres and bring music to life in venues, all while delighting consumers with a CocaCola in hand.
Continuing the success of our The Magic is in the Serve campaign, we celebrated Coca-Cola as the perfect non-alcoholic drink to accompany food, especially in restaurants, pubs, clubs, and hotels. We once again partnered with celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge to bring magic to the dining experience, creating a seasonal menu with Coca-Cola as the hero beverage. Coca-Cola can be enjoyed in a variety of dining occasions and our aim is to ensure our consumers are getting the best experience of Coca-Cola or Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, perfectly served in a chilled 330ml bottle, in a glass filled with ice and a slice of lemon.
In the alcohol category, RTD continues to grow, led by the success of -196; a brand we’ve built with Beam Suntory. We’ve also seen a rising demand for premium, Asian-inspired spirits like Japanese whisky. Innovation remains our focus as we look to the future, ensuring we stay ahead of trends and deliver exciting products.
Ensuring sustainability and community stays at the heart of our business
We strive to deliver sustainable growth, create value for our stakeholders and build a better future for our business, our communities and the planet. This year, we have continued to make significant progress, announcing by 1 January 2025 we will be powering our Australian operations with 100% renewable electricity.
In an acknowledgment of our commitment to packaging circularity, we were announced as a partner in TasRecycle, the scheme co-ordinator for the new
Tasmanian container refund scheme anticipated for arrival mid-next year. Once live, Australia will have a scheme in every state and territory, significantly boosting the recycling capabilities of our nation.
CCEP plays a vital role in the community, much like hospitality venues that have close ties with their local areas. We actively engage with communities through various initiatives, supporting local events, and contributing to social causes that are close to our customers’ and employees’ hearts. Through these initiatives, we aim to make a positive impact and support the wellbeing of our consumers.
Looking forward to 2025
The year ahead holds exciting possibilities for CCEP, and we’re ready to embrace the opportunities within both our non-alcohol and alcohol portfolios. In June 2025, our 18-year partnership with Beam Suntory will conclude. Together, we’ve enjoyed rapid growth and category leadership, including becoming a market leader in alcoholic RTDs. While this partnership comes to an end, our commitment to the alcohol category remains strong. We’ll continue to leverage our expertise in manufacturing, sales, and distribution to introduce new products in 2025 and beyond.
With our commitment to delivering the world’s greatest brands, combined with the passion and talent of our people, we are well-positioned for continued growth. We aim to keep delivering value to our customers and communities, in a responsible and sustainable manner.
A heartfelt thank you
Finally, we want to extend our deepest thanks to our customers. Your ongoing collaboration and dedication are integral to our shared success. As we look ahead to 2025, the potential for growth is clear, and we have every reason to be excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. Together, we have much to look forward to.
End of financial year investment performance update
AustralianSuper has delivered positive returns for members in the 12 months to 30 June 2024.
An improvement in both economic and investment conditions has seen AustralianSuper members benefit from positive returns for the 2024 financial year.
AustralianSuper’s flagship Balanced option, where most members are invested, returned 8.46% (super accounts) and 9.25% for Choice Income (retirement accounts) for the 12 months ended 30 June 20241.
All PreMixed and DIY Mix investment options also delivered positive investment performance for the financial ended 30 June 2024.
Investment markets showed improvement across the year, in part due to easing inflation and an increase in consumer spending. They were also helped by the earnings growth in the technology sector.
Listed shares help drive positive performance
Australian and international shares made a significant contribution to the Fund’s returns for FY24, and were the largest contributor to the Balanced option’s positive performance.
Other asset classes that make up the investment mix –including infrastructure, credit, fixed interest and cash – delivered more modest returns than shares.
The ups and downs of different asset classes throughout the year also shows the importance of investing in a diversified portfolio. And for AustralianSuper, this includes investing in multiple asset classes in different sectors across the globe.
Looking ahead
We know the past twelve months have not been without challenges, with members having to manage higher living costs across the board.
However, our investment team is now seeing positive signs in global economies and investment markets. This should also help to support member returns in the years ahead.
More specifically we’ll continue to monitor how central banks are managing interest rates, with the lagged effects of higher interest rates still a concern.
We’ll also be watching how changing economic conditions affect consumer spending. And as economic conditions change, we’ll continue to adjust our investment mix.
When it comes to super, it’s about looking at the longterm. Our focus will remain on balancing potential growth opportunities with diversification to deliver positive returns to members, while providing stability during times of market volatility.

Hands Across Canberra
It’s festive family time across Canberra, but as you celebrate how about sparing a moment to build our community and help out those who are having a hard time?
You might know about Hands Across Canberra from the annual Canberra Day Appeal (coming up on March 10), which raises much needed funds for local charities.
The Canberra Day Appeal campaign will kick off at the end of January – look out for ways you can boost your favourite charity’s fundraising efforts as we focus on encouraging Canberrans to give where you live.
Donating to those charities through the Hands Across Canberra portal boosts their fundraising efforts and enable them to focus on their frontline efforts. That’s important, because 85% of the money Canberrans donate to charity ends up leaving the city instead of helping our neighbours.
But what is Hands Across Canberra? And what does a community foundation do?
Hands Across Canberra was founded in 2010 by a group of committed locals who wanted to build a better Canberra for us all and keep it local.
Based on very successful models around the world, Canberra’s community foundation raises funds to help those who need it, invests the money to make it grow and then gives it back in grants.
Each year Hands Across Canberra works with partners the Snow Foundation, the John James Foundation and Aspen Medical to make grants that meet real human need in our community – from projects like long term shelter for victims of domestic violence to a mobile veterinary clinic treating companion animals for people experiencing homelessness.
Hands Across Canberra has helped to fund leadership programs for disability, a café employing recently arrived migrants and programs to get troubled youth off the streets and reunited with their families.
This year, the grants totalled $1.5 million for more than 60 projects across the ACT, making more than $6 million given back to Canberra since the collaborative started working together.
Every year, the Canberra Day Appeal mobilises Canberrans to give back, working with dozens of local charities to boost their resources for urgently need work.
Look out for Hands Across Canberra at the Festival of Speed at Thoroughbred Park, where the foundation will be the major charity partner for a weekend of glamour and grunt among the luxury European cars.
On Canberra Day itself, Hands Across Canberra is asking locals to run their hearts out for the second annual fun run. With a 2km, 5km and 10km course for everyone from serious runners posting a PB to friends strolling on a sunny day, it’s a great way to have fun and support Canberra, perhaps with sponsorship for your favourite cause.
This is Australia’s most generous city and supporting your community foundation is a brilliant way to make your contribution. When you give where you live, you help us all to build a better Canberra.

Meet Alisa Taylor, Partner at MV Law, and Amy Sydney, Special Counsel and MV’s Employment Law specialist. Together, Alisa and Amy make up part of the leadership team of MV’s Litigation and Employment Team.
Alisa and Amy have a special relationship with ClubsACT, being regular attendees of the ClubsACT’s member workshops and conferences, People & Culture Committee meetings, and networking events. They also each have their own special connection to the hospitality industry, with Alisa being the President of the Board of The RUC, and Amy with a hospitality background from her school days right through to assisting her family to run a successful hospitality group in Canberra early in her legal career.

In addition to our employment focus, we can also help with a vast array of matters, including:
> All aspects of property development, including finance, management of town planning reviews, development agreements, strategic structuring advice, building and consultant contracts and construction management advice
> Documenting management agreements and other contracts
> Advising on club mergers and acquisitions
> Board governance
> Member disciplinary matters
> Privacy and information law
> Liquor / gaming licensing matters
> Insurance issues
> Defamation and other reputation management
> Taxation (including LVC, rates, payroll tax and federal taxes like GST)
> Debt recovery.

Clubs Magazine – TPB Update July 2024
Treasury Wine Estates is proud to lead the industry in all aspects of our business.
From producing world-class, award-winning wines to implementing more sustainable operations and fostering a team of dedicated sales professionals, we strive to set the standard in excellence.
As the Managing Director of Treasury Premium Brands, I am excited to share some of the changes you will soon see from our business.
We are positioning our company to better serve you, with distinctive brands and innovative products designed to cater to evolving consumer trends. Ensuring that we have the right people in the field is also a crucial part of this strategy.
In today’s market, where consumers are spoilt for choice with new brands and varieties regularly appearing, it is essential to stay ahead of trends and meet customer demands effectively.
The past few years have been challenging for Clubs and the hospitality industry more broadly, with operational costs continuing to rise and consumers suffering from cost of living pressures.
In recognition of this, Treasury Premium Brands (TPB) has not taken a price increase over the past three years and will continue this stance through August. This commitment underscores our dedication to supporting the industry and helping you maintain healthy margins on wine sales within your businesses.
Looking ahead, we have several new on-premise exclusives set to launch later this year and aimed at leveraging our strong brands in a differentiated way from the retail market. A prime example of our innovation is the Squealing Pig cans we launched last October, which have already seen great success in the market.
Pepperjack and Wynns are some of the most renowned Australian wines, beloved by consumers, which is why we plan to provide greater promotional flexibility while protecting the value of our core range as we head into this financial year.
As consumer preferences evolve, many are choosing to dine out and enjoy higher-quality meals, this is why we are passionate about ensuring you have suitable wines to complement any dining experience or social occasion.
To further deepen our customer and consumer engagement, we are a number of new roles back into our national field team. These additions will enhance our ability to connect with and support you more effectively.
We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Parkes as our General Manager for Treasury Premium Brands and Simon Archer who will now lead our National Field Sales team.
Sarah can be reached at Sarah.Parkes@tweglobal. com and Simon can be reached at Simon.Archer@ tweglobal.com.
We are here to support you so please reach out to your TPB contact with any questions or to let us know how we can assist you further.
