NEWSLETTER FEATURE

New Year’s Resolutions – How unrealistic can we get? Create realistic New Years Resolutions this year that you might actually stick too (and have fun while doing too!) We spend a lot of money on family and friends (and ourselves hopefully) at Christmas and then vow that we will start saving earlier next year, or even look for more ideas on how to DIY Christmas for a cost-saving activity. For most people, the New Year’s Resolutions we set foourselves are not only unrealistic but they may also be a contributing factor towards feeling unsatisfied in ourselves in the year to come. Here are some realistic, achievable and meaningful resolutions that you can set and work on all year round.

1. LEARN A PARTY TRICK Knowing a cool party trick (hopefully one that no one else knows!) is a great icebreaker at social events. Mastering a new skill – no matter how pointless – can

increase your self-esteem and earn you some serious social kudos at the next party you attend. Whether it be a magic trick, a mental mind game, an unusual musical instrument or something physically impressive, you are sure to gather a group of new friends around you.

2. CALL A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER ONCE A WEEK Write down a list of people that you don’t get to speak to as often as you like. Make a conscious effort (write it in your calendar) a schedule of one person to call, text or email every week. Maintaining networks of people around us takes a lot of time and effort but by spreading your energy evenly across the important people in your life

you will find yourself more connected and more involved each time you make that conscious effort to reach out to them.

3. BE A ‘YES’ PERSON FOR ONE MONTH Have you seen the movie ‘Yes Man’? No? Then that is the first step to this New Year’s Resolution. Watch it!. Then apply the theory to one month in the New Year where you cannot say no (okay...maybe say no to a few less things). You will be surprised at the experiences that you have that you may never have had the chance to when you alwaysjust say no! New Year’s Resolutions don’t have to be unachievable. Start with these 3 simple ideas to kicking off 2018. 

A WORD FROM PRUE It has been a month filled of events for us all! Starting with the launch of the Club Orianna Pontoon BBQ Boat and ending with Melbourne Cup. We hope you had a blast at the boat launch and we can't wait to finalise licences so we can get the boat out on the water. We will have more information on how to book the boat in the coming weeks! I would like to say a big thank you to Glenis and Lynne who did a superb job of organising the food and decorations for Melbourne Cup, our accountant extraordinaire who organised the sweep and of course Roly for going to the trouble of putting a TV point in the garage so everyone could watch the race. Congratulations to Rob Betteridge who won best dressed man (although we all thought he could of taken out best dressed woman as well!) Thank you to all who helped to make it a great day. Christmas is coming and we will be having lunch at Charlies with more details at the back of the newsletter. What a wonderful time of year and I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Newhart Answers to these questions will be revealed in the next edition of Club Orianna Newsletter.

Meet your neighbours Lynne Murphy I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. My late husband and I moved to the Gold Coast to spend time with our daughter and grandchildren. We came in in 1977 for 12 months and I am still here. My son and family live in New Zealand and I love going to visit them once a year at least. I was a Secretary/Receptionist since leaving school as well as being involved with Highland Dancing and Badminton committees for many years. Also spent time on the Bowls Committee at my last residence. After my husband passed away I found it very hard and felt it was time for a change. Friends saw a write up about Orianna and suggested I come have a look. I was very impressed with the location and the number of home I had to choose from, the facilities and the Club House. Karen Lombe was so helpful and friendly that I decided that this was where I wanted to be. My favourite hobby is card-making and I hope to be able to interest some of the other residents in making simple cards for special occasions. I also enjoy outdoor bowls and walking with the Wednesday Wanderers. Having our own bowling green will be a bonus, a good way to socialise and have fun.

Last issue's 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' answers revealed!

I have been lucky enough to do a few cruises and to travel overseas, something would recommend.

1. Over what distance is the Melbourne Cup run? (2 Miles) 2. Who is the patron saint of Spain? (Saint James) 3. Commonly known by his nickname, what was the full name of ‘Banjo’ Patterson? (Andrew Barton)

The best part of living at Orianna is the friendliness of all the resident and I have made some great friends here already. Also, being close to the beaches, walking and cycling tracks and the fact it is a smaller community.

How many did you get right?!

I am looking forward to my family visiting from New Zealand and the Gold Coast to see what a great place I have chosen to live at. 
