100 Years of Anzac – the spirit lives on 2014 - 2018

The centenary of Anzac 2014 to 2018 is Australia’s most important period of national commemoration, marking 100 years since Australia and New Zealand’s involvement in the First World War.

YOUR LOCAL ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE: Anzac Day 2018 Dawn Service will be held at Brennen Park, Bongaree starting at 0428 am Hosted by Bribie Island RSL Sub Branch.

Anzac Day goes far beyond remembering the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in war and on operational service, past and present. The spirit of the Anzac’s, with qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. In the final year of the centenary anniversary, the centenary of Armistice that ended the First World War will be commemorated over a five-week period, ending on November 11. The Armistice of Compiègne between the Allies and Germany came into effect at 11am on the 11 November 1918.

The guns fell silent on the Western Front and after more than four unimaginable years, the war was finally over. After the Second World War, Armistice Day became Remembrance Day.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." 

CLUB ORIANNA NEWSLETTER · APRIL 2018 EDITION

FROM THE GM Welcome to the April edition of our Club Oriana newsletter

A WORD FROM PRUE Well hasn’t the start of 2018 just flown by! It’s hard to believe that we’re already in April and Autumn is amongst us – hopefully some cooler weather is on the way which will make for a nice change. Our very own Orianna ‘A Team’ had their very first win at Tuesday Trivia recently. Winners are certainly grinners – especially when the competition playing field wasn’t the smallest! Everyone is welcome to join, the more the merrier I always say. It would be great to see you all out there giving it a go, and who knows, maybe we could come away with an Orianna trivia trifecta! Our BBQ Pontoon Boat has been getting a workout lately, with a big thanks to Gary from Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie for taking some of you through the ropes. Our ladies had a great time on the water recently, even building up the confidence to be Skippers for the day! Gary was oh-so-patient with the ladies while they were learning how to berth the boat. We’ve even had some of our residents join Volunteer Marine Rescue and are all enjoying the fortnightly Sunset Drinks and the view overlooking the Pumicestone Passage. A lovely way to relax, unwind and enjoy new friendship before the weather gets too cool. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter and the Easter Bunny found you, no matter your plans. Talk soon,

Prue Sara

What a great start to 2018 it’s been! It’s fantastic to see so many of our new residents being welcomed into our Orianna community. Our resort social events make forging new friendships an easy task, especially in such a close knit environment that is our resort. Soon you’ll be able to kick back and relax together in the recreation centre and enjoy these new purpose built facilities, but I’ll save that update for over the page. We have a busy couple of weeks on the horizon, with construction being completed on sites 9, 10, 17, 19 and 20. Soon you’ll have a few more new neighbours to welcome into the Club. I’m also very pleased to announce that the construction order for our last remaining site (site 8) has been placed, meaning stage one will be finished in the next couple of months! Not long to go now and your stage will be trade free – I truly appreciate your patience during this busy transition period. Everything is all starting to take shape and the dream that is Orianna is really coming together. I must say a BIG thank you, to you – our residents, for helping to make it a reality. It certainly hasn’t always been smooth sailing but we’ve certainly learnt a lot. I hope you and your families had a lovely and safe Easter long weekend.

CLUB ORIANNA NEWSLETTER · APRIL 2018 EDITION

TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY, THAT IS THE QUESTION! Trying to decide between buying or renting a caravan or motorhome? Take a read of some of the pros and cons below - they might help make that decision a little bit easier.

BUYING: Pro’s

Construction Update Recreation centre, bowling green and pool

Stay tuned for the eagerly anticipated grand opening launch.

You get to choose the layout and features that are perfect for you

Fit the accessories and upgrades that you’ll most enjoy

Con’s (more like costs) •

Purchasing and loan repayments

Yearly service and other maintenance

Insurance

Storing the caravan when not in use (if you don’t have a yard big enough)

Pro’s

The furniture, gym equipment and cinema room furnishings will soon be delivered and the look will be complete!

Although this rain has been a welcomed change lately, we do hope it stays away so there are no more delays to completion. As you can see, the site can quickly turn into a mud pit at the slightest drop of rain!

It’s yours! You have complete freedom and control to do and travel as you wish, a major drawcard we think

RENTING:

Construction of the recreation centre is complete! We are all patiently awaiting the final council certification to come through while we put all the finishing touches into place.

Works on the bowling green and pool will commence the first week back after Easter. Along with the landscaping, we hope to see this portion of the resort finished in approximately 8 weeks.

No yearly upkeep costs

No need to find room to store it

Gives you a chance to try before you buy

A more economical option if you don’t plan on or won’t caravan that often

Con’s

STAGE TWO Civil works for stage two are scheduled to commence late April, which will see the beginning of the next chapter for Sandstone Point. With this new stage, we’ve introduced some exciting new designs, which we think will really suit Orianna’s lifestyle.”

You’ll need to plan your trips well in advance to secure a caravan and camping site

Potentially limited range to pick from

Unable to personalise or customise the rig

Whatever option you decide on, caravanning is a great way to explore the roads less travelled! A ‘must do’ for any bucket list, we reckon.

HEALTH

Eye spy… healthy eyes Are your eyes the healthiest they can be? Here’s a few quick tips that you can put into practice.

1. Have regular eye tests

How to keep your eyes healthy?

An eye test is not just good for checking whether your glasses are up to date. It's also a vital check on the health of your eyes.

Eat well - eating a balanced, healthy diet is important for your eyes just as much as it is for your overall health and wellbeing

An eye test can pick up eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts, as well as general health problems, including diabetes and high blood pressure. Good eyesight is important in reducing accidental injuries from falls and motor vehicle accidents.

Wear sunglasses – strong sunlight can damage your eyes and may increase your risk of cataracts. Wear sunglasses or contact lenses with a built-in UV filter to protect your eyes from harmful rays

Sleep well – as you sleep, your eyes are continuously lubricated and irritants, such as dust or smoke, that may have accumulated during the day are cleared out

2. Wear the right lenses An eye test will establish whether you need a different prescription for your glasses or contact lenses. It's important to wear the correct prescription lenses. This will improve your quality of life and reduce the risk of accidents such as falls. You may be entitled to help with the cost of glasses or contact lenses, so ask your optometrist about this.

Quit smoking – smoking can increase your chances of developing conditions such as cataracts and AMD (age-related macular degeneration) Stay a healthy weight – being overweight increases your risk of diabetes, which can lead to sight loss.

Use good lighting – to see well, your eyes need three times as much light when you're 60 as they did when you were 20. Increase the daylight in your home by keeping windows clean and curtains pulled back. Make sure you have good electric lighting too, especially at the top and bottom of stairs so you can see the steps clearly. For reading or close work, use a direct light from a flexible table lamp, positioned so the light is not reflected by the page and causing glare.

Exercise – good circulation and oxygen intake are important for our eye health. Both of these are stimulated by regular exercise. 

RESIDENT

Meet your neighbours

Robynne & Maurice Britt! Originally from country Victoria, Robynne, the eldest of 10 and Maurice, the youngest of eight, both have twins galore in their family! ‘I have twin brothers, twin sisters, my dad is a twin, I have twin nephews and I married a twin,’ Robynne said with a laugh. “We moved to Birkdale, Queensland in 1977 because we were sick of the Victorian weather and stayed there for 35 years. Wanting a second sea-change, we purchased property management rights to an apartment block in Noosaville and moved there in ‘99. Those were a good 11 years! Although, it did take us a little while to adjust to living on site in an apartment. It was hard work but geez, it was good living. We sold the rights and after another six years of Maurice working for the local council and myself working as the front office manager for Ironman

(Triathlons), we decided there was no better time like the present to do what we’ve always wanted – travel Australia. So we sold our house, packed up the caravan, purchased a brand new car and off we went! We have some really fond memories of driving around the east coast of Australia. Queensland locations were always our favourite and surprisingly, our time in Charleville takes the number one spot. The worst place would have had to of been travelling back from Port Lincoln. We stopped for fuel and there was not a soul in sight! While Maurice was paying, he asked the attendant why there wasn’t anyone around – the response he received “It’s 47 degrees! It’s far too hot tobe outside!” Looking for a base to call home, Orianna Sandstone Point was the first and only place that we looked at.

As soon as we drove in, we fell in love! The atmosphere, the environment and the facilities, everything that we were looking for was already here! It also helps that we’re now located in the middle of our children – our daughter lives in Bli Bli and our son lives in Capalaba. The only downsidethough, there’s no room for our beloved caravan! Luckily our son is on acreage so he takes care of it for us. We’ve got 6 grandchildren (surprisingly none are twins), all of who love coming for a visit. If only we had enough room to let them all stay over at the same time. We’re looking forward to their next visit where we think a day out on the water on the boat is certainly required. Now that we’ve both got our boat licences, we love going on quick day trips with our new Orianna friends.”
